Yeah DP, you can get HDMI to DP adapters but I've not had great results personally, I find HDMI to DVI is the most stable from my personal use, your results will vary on cables, monitors etc.

Running SFC checks the operating system for corrupt files, which could fix issues such as yours. But no guarantees, ofc :P

I'm in open firmware mode but for some reason my keyboard won't type. I press the w key and it outputs ok. Is it the keyboard being too modern or signs that the Mac is dead?

I ask the latter as I am having weird display issues where I have vertical multi coloured lines along the display. I'm hoping that's just a CRT issue (surprising can pick up a $30 replacement for this model quite close to me) and not signs of the computer itself dying.
