you can't run it on a drive that has an OS installed, like windows. to get rid of this problem, either make sure that you're trying to clear an ssd that is not the ssd you're booting from, or format it and then try secure erase.

if you just want to store you can use pretty much anything. if you want to stream movies you'll need something powerful enough for encoding/decoding etc whatever

they did mention that they want to "store" their files

so streaming's probably not happening

although the power would be nice for parity RIAD calculations

Yeah they are fine overall, it's definitely not going to beat internal m2 drives but for what it's use case is, being a portable drive that can game, and be used on multiple devices, as well as extra storage if you don't have an extra m2 slot, it's good.
