i had a backlight die in a cheapo tv this time last year... single backlight for the entire panel.. made up from 12 individual LEDs and a difuser layer... so i got a white LED strip, soldered it to the TVs power supply, and put 60 LEDs in instead, put the same diffuser on. TV was fantastic... so much brighter, so much clearer

was awesome for about 6 weeks until the extra current draw burned the PSU out 😄
