I think they were talking about the fact that x86_64 was developed by AMD, and as such, requires AMD to issue the license to use that instruction set

carmine stirrup
#

Intel bet on IA64 and ooops...

ionic abyss
#

Well youn need both licenses not just amds

#

I guess intel doesn't see reason to let A new competitor into the market

leaden gale
long briar
#

old x86 patents and such can't be protected anymore, so it's possible for new chipmakers to build from there

#

the issue is they're starting 20 years behind

#

and Intel has to effectively protect its intellectual property rights in order to maintain them

#

Which includes properly controlling who gets to use it.
It's not like our current 3 point seatbelts that Volvo designed but never patented so that cars can be safer for everyone, Intel has proprietary tech that their tech is based around

ionic abyss
#

i found certian websites are blocking access from my state

#

ill keep the convo safe for work

#

just annoying to find this

#

the umm site worked yesterday

carmine stirrup
ionic abyss
#

does this meen i need a good vpn now

#

what a pain

#

many sites wont even bother

spice pine
#

definitely not an appropriate topic here lmao

fossil frost
ionic abyss
#

technicaly i only mentioned location based website blocks

fossil frost
#

bug in M1, M2 and M3 chips, unpatchable, its a core flaw in the silicone design its self

ionic abyss
#

what a pain having to use a vpn for certian sites

fossil frost
#

its a spectre/meltdown type flaw.. but... since apple doesnt do servers... its "less" critical

long briar
#

It really doesn't affect much

fossil frost
long briar
#

and for an extended period of time

fossil frost
#

yeah, all things like this need physical access, but... physical access doesnt mean that somebody needs to be at the machine... any RCE exploit gives you "physical access"

long briar
#

it's significantly harder for Apple though, no?

#

Like this seems like a highly theoretical flaw that requires specific parameters to work

#

which means day to day use won't change much at all

fossil frost
#

no, its just as easy, the real reason it wont change much at all is because M1/2/3 isnt used in servers

long briar
#

So no external "local" access?

fossil frost
#

any laptop can have a lot of external access when plugged into any network. its more because, if its not used in servers, there is no real criminal gain from exploiting it, and there are far fewer of them

#

there are enough apple silicone devices to make it worth while finding this.. .but not enough to make it worth while to actually exploit it

#

they are in a magical middle ground right now

long briar
#

You're stealing encryption keys, but that's kinda pointless if you don't have anything to decrypt no?

fossil frost
#

depends whos macbook it is doesnt it. its worth doing if you have stolen the laptop of a hedgefund manager

#

or a billionaires macbook

long briar
#

which again is my question, once you got the encryption keys, what are you decrypting with it if you don't have the physical device

fossil frost
long briar
#

Those are stored in ram?

fossil frost
#

process A, cannot access process B's ram without it looking like mangled garbage... with those keys.. it looks like real data.

#

those are stored on disk, until somebody types them, then they are stored in ram until they are evicted

long briar
#

right

fading eagle
#

helo

long briar
#

So what that means is, you'd need access after someone has used their device for that specific use case for a local password manager

fossil frost
#

banking details, cloud login details (aws or azure) could be quite lucrative to get hold of too. anything that gives an attacker to something further up the chain

long briar
#

and the moment someone restarts the laptop it's gone

#

wait banking auth is handled locally?

#

or is this just a M silicon/mobile thing

fossil frost
#

no, you would need to run an RCE that runs a program on the machine that justs sits and waits for things that look like banking credentials being put into a bank website. and when you see that.. you do a HTTP POST to a webhook somewhere,

long briar
#

ahh

#

then why not just keylogger at that point

fossil frost
#

that is effectively what credential theft is, but less dumb and more targeted than "just send me everything they type"

#

you look for things that are typed on specific web pages, or into specific applications

#

attracts less attention that way

#

or, you could do what is more popular these days, and just fully ransomware the machine, since you dont need the secondary bug at all at that point, and most people just pay the ransom

long briar
#

on that topic... I'm surprised Ransomware is such a big deal...

#

Like somehow my parents who learned absolutely nothing in terms of "sketchy" websites (they're all the same) still haven't been hit (ofc I back up their data for them)

#

and it's been the same mentality since 2004

fossil frost
#

ransomware is more of a big thing with companies now

#

since its usually cheaper to pay the ransom than it is to have downtime

long briar
#

mmm true

#

and everything is stored in cloud for consumers so they don't care

fossil frost
#

and its usually a targeted phishing attack

#

we get mandatory training on this crap every 3 months, "dont trust a usb drive you find in the car park" "if it seems out of character, use alternate methods to communicate with the person to verify what they are saying" "dont fucking trust SMS for 2FA"

long briar
#

Right but unless you're a high profile person or something, sms for 2fa is probably fine no?

#

Within a corporation obv not

fossil frost
#

a lot of people still dont have RCS or iMessage, so SMS is still delivered over raw, plain text, GSM. so somebody with a cheapo femtocell made out of a raspi and some other cheapo gear, could pluck that right out of the air.. or even send fake ones

#

doesnt need to be a high up person for an attacker to gain access to the network, or gain access to you git repo and make a dodgy commit that gives them access to other companies sensitive data

long briar
#

right

fossil frost
#

i used to work for a company that provided software that tracked all medical and training data and provided analytics and all sorts of other bits, for all the pro and world tour cycling teams, all premier league football teams, many national teams... we had attack attempts on us all the time

#

that data is worth a LOT of money

long briar
#

yea that makes a lot of sense

harsh quartz
fossil frost
#

companies are targets now, and then its usually the easiest target within the company that criminals aim for, not the highest value target. since all you need is a way in. and the best way in, is the most unnoticable way in, since then you have longer before you are kicked out

#

i.e. a new hire might hide the fact they have been phished and ran bad-choices.exe from management, for fear of immediately being fired... but if you hit the CEO, the CEO may immediately hand their laptop over to the security team

#

because the CEO isnt going to be fired for that

long briar
#

which... for ltt was their management network apparently

fossil frost
#

yeah, when LTT got hit, that was a spear phishing attack.. long term targeted attack against a single individual within the organisation. made the whole interaction seem plausable

#

shotgun attacks work too... where you just send something to everyone in the hopes that SOMEONE falls for it.. doesnt matter who or for how long, because you only need your malware to run for a fraction of a second

long briar
#

downsides of having fast pcs ahaha

#

code runs so fast you don't get to see it

fossil frost
#

if all you want it to do is grab the google chrome password vault and post that to somewhere, takes less than 100ms to do.. then you have all the passwords that user has stored

long briar
#

yep

#

Though I wonder if Android's Keystore is actually harder to extract or not, especially with Google pushing Passkeys now

fossil frost
#

that user then has to realise that is what happened, and even then, they dont know which password you are interested in... so now they have to spend hours to days, changing ALL of them.. in the meantime, you have already accessed what you need

someone on our team got offered £1mil for one of our customers data, a single team member from that particular customer too... didnt care about anything else... we just forwarded that on to the team in question and let them deal with it with the police

long briar
#

I assume

fossil frost
#

tbh, sideloading should be allowed on all devices, but, off by default, and you have to specifically turn it on... thats my opinion on it anyway

long briar
#

Which is interesting since

fossil frost
#

the security downsides are much less than the upsides of everything else

long briar
#

I sideloaded an app on my Pixel 8, the phone wouldn't let me allow notification access to that app

fossil frost
#

that app may not have had the notification permission turned on in the manifest, but was trying to use them. because ive got a few sideloaded apps and they all allow and produce notifications

long briar
#

nono it was "for your security we cannot allow access to notifications"

fossil frost
#

thats odd, never seen that before

Rent a San Francisco apartment for a whole year with 1 million pounds

tired glade
#

Suborbs of London counts, or that expensive part of city?

fossil frost
#

London is a county, the "city of london" is actually a very small part of that county, right towards the middle.. so depending on what you mean by london (the greater london area is what most people mean), then suburbs definately count

fossil frost
#

friend of mine rents a 1 bedroom apartment, a small one, about 30 minutes outside of very central london... and it costs him £3000/mo

fossil frost
long briar
#

which is about scams and harmful apps

fossil frost
#

its not even like our phones are that different. ive got the pixel7 with latest updates, so we arep probably running the exact same build of the same OS

long briar
#

Yea

tired glade
#

Can you even buy property in city of London without membership in guild?

fossil frost
tired glade
#

Oh, you can't even buy it

fossil frost
#

in greater london, there are loads of places to buy property, just not in the small bit in the middle which is "the city of london" part

fossil frost
#

tbh, chelsea, which is also the middle of london, you can quite easily buy property, as long as you are a billionaire

long briar
#

Which I think is actually the right approach to sideloading

#

so you have the security of first party app store + most of the convenience of sideloading

fossil frost
#

sideloading just needs an opt-in.. plus a per-app "are you certain you know what you are doing"

#

at that point, its not apple or google's problem, its YOUR problem

long briar
#

fair enough yea

vapid smelt
fossil frost
long briar
#

but then what if you have an app that silently downloads another app, sideloads it but doesn't display it in the main app page

vapid smelt
fossil frost
long briar
#

and this first app is trusted and can make changes to the device

#

I still don't think sideloaded apps should be able to access keystore or use biometricprompt and such

vapid smelt
fossil frost
#

thing is.. i have a 4 bedroom house with a large front and large back garden, next door to a golf course.. and it costs me £500/mo mortgage... but i live in the suburbs of manchester... but... i work remote for a company based in oslo in norway, with our uk office in london.. yet he thinks hes better than all of us because he lives in london

vapid smelt
fossil frost
#

my mortgage is 10% of my salary, his rent is 80% of his.. yet he thinks he has the better life

#

and at the end of everything.. i own my house... he owns fuck all

vapid smelt
long briar
#

spending over 50% of your salary on your home alone is crazy

fossil frost
vapid smelt
#

But London is so lovely

fossil frost

but realistically.. i cant.. because i have 3 kids... and kids are fucking expensive 😄

long briar

When you can't left something for extra spending, you should think about your income

fossil frost
vapid smelt
fossil frost
#

tbh, im a 4 hour drive from london... the 1 time i needed to go to the office.. i set off at 4am, got to the office for 8:30am, and had a shower a the office... had 4 hours worth of meetings.. and drove home... cost me... £70 or so in diesel... so its not like living where i live puts london out of reach too

Security is always a funny topic cause no one takes it seriously until after the point where it proven that it needed to be more serious

fossil frost
harsh quartz
#

Like we had a client recently who migrated to 365, and want to know why all of their emails said external and after explaining it they wanted it disabled cause they didn’t like seeing the word external

harsh quartz
fossil frost
harsh quartz
fossil frost
#

then the VP of Tech would have said no.. and if they had said yes... the dev managers and the devs themselves would have said no.. each of us have very little say on what actually goes on, but, collectively, if we all push back, they have a choice fire everyone and lose all that institutional knowledge, and get nothing done for at least 2 years why they rehire, and retrain a load of new devs to be able to work in their codebase with no help at all.. or accept that we are right

harsh quartz
#

Idk, last place I worked at we had a new cto that came in and literally knew nothing about tech, luckily she did know when to sit down and listen and had a good head on her

fossil frost
#

we have 1 small project left that uses full fat .net framwork.. everything else is dotnet6, once we migrate that final project to dotnet6, everything gets upgraded to dotnet8, and im switching my workstation to a linux build, and writing a dev setup script that takes a basic debian based distro, and turns it into a dev machine for our workplace.. my manager is super onboard with it, and wants it to happen

#

dealing with the red tape, and waiting around for decisions to be made is what i first found hard to deal with when i first joined a massive company... but now i realise that the waiting around, and sign off process, and the controls in place, are for a reason, its because you may have 100+ people working on the same project, and you need to make sure everyone can work at the same time, and nobody is tripping over anyone else... so waiting a bit early on, saves you from waiting around loads later on

#

some days though, that completely goes to shit, and you just end up waiting around with nothing to do all day.. so you either just sit and do nothing (watch netflix in the toilet), or start prototyping new stuff, which sometimes turns out to be something good, sometimes turns out to be a dead end

harsh quartz
#

I’ve always said , if the worse thing I can say about a job is that it’s boring, it’s probably not a bad job

#

Right now I do mostly help desk stuff and the problem is I’m level 1, and there is no level 2

fossil frost
#

my uncle has always told me that i dont have a job... i have a hobby that i would be doing anyway, that i get paid very well for

harsh quartz
fossil frost
#

it does get tedious and kill the joy some days... but then you stumble across something interesting, and the joy comes rushing back

harsh quartz
#

That’s why I run windows on my home machine, the hobby stays a hobby and isn’t allowed to lose joy

fossil frost
#

i know a few people who have chosen that route... very very talented developers, 1 of which is a long distance truck driver, the other is a warehouse picker... because they dont want working as a developer to kill the joy they get from programming

Can come one help me with a question please? I’ve been wondering to know, how long is too long to keep your pc running with a game on it?

eternal hearth
#

well it costs money in electricity. Some gpus are tested for over 100hours so try to keep the game off when you go to sleep

graceful burrow
#

Which, if your cooling system is adequate, should be never
Which means indefinitely

#

You'll run into game engines freaking out more often about games being left open than the computer freaking out for running it

craggy pecan
#

It is worth noting that if your cooling is bad (packed with too much dust, fuzz and feathers) then it's not good to use your computer for any workload, really. If that were the case it's definitely worth giving it a cleaning.

It’s a 1000 dollar gaming pc

#

craggy pecan
#

If it's not, it's usually hot to the touch even under minimal loads

#

Like... My laptop is pretty lousy cooling... Asus Zephrus G14, and when I would game on the laptop I would almost burn my fingers

#

Since then, I've cleaned the dust and also replaced the cooling fan that had failed...

#

I also keep it "lifted" on a stand, to allow more air flow under the laptop

#

If you're using a "desktop" it's much more likely that it has adequate cooling

outer echo
#

Just warm or like actually hot

craggy pecan

Dude. the Asus Zephrus g14 gets HOT like literally almost burning

#

outer echo
#

Oh

#

craggy pecan
#

I actually bought it based on Linus's recommendation, lol

outer echo
#

My computer has one fan

#

Its kinda big tho

craggy pecan
#

Is it a desktop or a laptop?

eternal hearth
#

1 fan is a bruh moment, it just downclocks and shuts off if it gets too hot

outer echo
craggy pecan
#

1 fan is fine if the case has good airflow

outer echo
#

I send a video to u of it

craggy pecan
#

usually the GFX card is also an additional fan that sucks the internal air in and blasts it hot out the back of the case.
Although some GFX cards just kinda blast the heat around inside the case.
That's why it's good to have a case fan blasting heat out the back, and allowing the case to basically "draw in" cool air

#

Additionally, most power supplies also draw in case air and blast it hot out the back

eternal hearth
craggy pecan
#

So you probably have about 3 fans

eternal hearth
#

shitty timestamp doesnt work

craggy pecan
#

I just have so much doubt that you're desktop case isn't sufficiently cooled to allow you to leave a stressful video game up and running

#

It's possible, but unlikely

#

However back in around 2008 my video card started to go bad and I used to put bags of ice onto it to play counterstrike without it lagging

#

That's kind of a fond memory

outer echo
craggy pecan
#

In that example, the case was cooled fine, but the GFX card stopped cooling itself well due to age

eternal hearth
craggy pecan
#

Your GFX also has a fan, and so does your PSU

#

Unless you're like Linus going "totally fanless"

outer echo
eternal hearth
#

yes

outer echo
#

Oh really?

craggy pecan
#

Most GFX coolers operate as a case fan

#

They draw in the internal air of the PC case and eject it ALL out the back

#

They do that to prevent recirculating the hot air inside the case

eternal hearth
craggy pecan
outer echo
#

I have like a normal fan in my house

craggy pecan
#

Why not just use a monitoring tool and check your CPU and GPU temps

craggy pecan

What do you think for my pc tho

craggy pecan
#

I don't know. It all depends on the circumstance.

outer echo
#

Hm

eternal hearth
#

if it breaks you are unlucky

outer echo
craggy pecan
#

I recommend just leaving it on, unless you need to be using less electricity

eternal hearth
#

my pc is basically on all day and shut off when I leave or go to sleep

craggy pecan
#

You could just put the "auto sleep" timer on it for 5 hours of inactivity

eternal hearth
#

my hdd has been dying for years but still runs fine so its just down to luck

craggy pecan
#

Yes. I know the feeling

outer echo
#

Or are you saying when I do happen to take a break, turn it off for 2 hours

eternal hearth
craggy pecan
#

I don't really feel like you're receiving vague answers here...
The fact is there's no "right" answer.
Leaving it on is fine. Turning it off when you're not using it is also fine.

outer echo
#

I’m scared my pc will overheat

eternal hearth
#

the right answer is that it doesnt break

outer echo
#

Ok

eternal hearth
#

if its not physically damaged it should not break

craggy pecan
#

The main concern is the cost of electricity, the concern about power outages, the noise of the machine, the buildup of dust.

outer echo

What if my pc is just generally noisy in general

harsh quartz
#

Ahh. I’m still debating running an AIO next time I upgrade or sticking with my air cooler

pliant karma
#

craggy pecan
#

The processor/gpu has thermal sensors (like 1000 of them) all over it, and that software gives the "average" temp of the processing circuits

pliant karma
#

my 5800x likes to go up to 92c a lot when I cpu encode on it but it's just chilling

craggy pecan
#

If your temperatures show up less than 80 degrees celcius, you're probably fine

#

CPU should probably be at 40 degrees celcius or less

pliant karma
#

though that is purely what my 5800x is being used for now just cpu encoding

harsh quartz
craggy pecan
#

And GPU should probably be at 60-70 degrees celsius or less

#

but both chips should be fine if they're less than 90 degrees celcius (which is SUPER hot)

pliant karma
#

unless we talk about am5 then that is normal lol

craggy pecan
#

Most GPUs I've tested often get to about 102 degrees celcius when under a heavy computing load (such as furmark)

#

but going much beyond that temperature is bad

harsh quartz
craggy pecan
#

Generally speaking, we don't want our chips that hot

#

but it's usually fine if they don't get hotter

craggy pecan

My electricity is prohibitively expensive for it

pliant karma
#

haHAA yea nope they're jacking up the bill now cause they need funding for a project

#

craggy pecan

But if you don't live in LA, then very likely that it's worth it to get that crypto miner, if you can figure out how to get the Kaspa coin into your crypto wallet, and keep yourself from losing the credentials

#

And if you can figure out how to exchange it back into USD

My current important specs are RTX 3070 and Ryzen 5 5600X but I'm considering upgrading to RTX 4070 Ti and Ryzen 7 5900X like I had brought up before

craggy pecan

My electricity can cost around $0.45/kWh (or more) so running that device would probably cost around $130 in electricity and bring in an approximate profit of $240. Totally worth it, but I'm not interested in negotiating that one with the one who pays the electricity in my home

#

The hosting facility charges $0.10 / kWh

harsh quartz
warm elk
#

I live with my parents and it'll likely stay that way for years to come so I normally don't have to worry about paying any bills besides my subscription services

craggy pecan

craggy pecan
#

well... if you had 4 of those Goldshell KA Box Kaspa Miner 1.18T devices you'd be making the same profit without working

#

I'm not sure if you're using Mb or MB

compact trout
#

sorry meant to say MB/s

craggy pecan
#

MB = Mb x 8

compact trout
#

megabyte

#

not bits

craggy pecan
#

yep. I'm on 500 Mb rn

#

it's about 40 MB

compact trout
#

ye i was getting that much on my old pc

craggy pecan
#

My wifi6 card isn't even taking advantage of it though

compact trout
#

fx 6300 to a 7800x3d goes hard

#

craggy pecan
#

my wifi 6 card gets 250 Mb max at only 50 ft from very powerful router

compact trout
craggy pecan
#

I should be getting almost the full 500 Mb

#

I've fiddled with so many settings and I've decided that my laptop's wifi6 card is just a lousy implementation of wifi6

compact trout
#

mine also depends on my laptop

#

sometimes its good

#

sometimes is bad

craggy pecan
#

I tested it on my dad's pc that I built for him. He gets the full 500Mb but his pc is 1 ft from the router

#

But I get less than half that at only 50 ft away

#

I think my wifi card is just a lousy wifi card

#

Even my phone gets better speeds than my laptop

compact trout
#

pretty sure mine too

#

i am not too bothered about my wifi speed on the laptop

#

as i only need it for browsing so as long as its snappy

#

its fine

craggy pecan
#

BTW ProtonVPN is a completely free VPN (1 device) and it has unlimited data and bandwidth

#

I just discovered it recently and I'm very happy with it

#

It even provides instructions on how to put it on your router

#

So it's not trying to limit you to it's proprietary applications to use it

On a phone call taking notes furiously with the notes app while talking on the phone with an ear bud in one ear.
Other person: “Are you going to write down what they’re saying and start doing work or are you just playing with your phone”

#

Guess you aren’t being productive on a phone call unless you’re pacing around wildly gesturing with a pen in hand

craggy pecan
#

Yes. That's often how people treat me too

I’m punching in SKUs and identification numbers. Why not just punch it into a phones notes or notepad equivalent and just copy and paste it later/ format than write it on a post it not and type it later

Sigh

Which is 100mbps

It is fiberlinuth , that's the only thing available in India

craggy pecan
#

oh. interesting

lapis solstice
#

It's pretty cheap though, around $10

craggy pecan
#

That's a low speed for fiber. My guess is they just recently rolled it out in your area and they'll upgrade it to faster speeds in a few years, giving you an option to upgrade

lapis solstice
#

Per month

craggy pecan
#

that's an amazing price for that speed though

#

100mb fiber in my area costs about $40 / per month

#

but some people are getting 1000mb for $50-65 per month

It's like 60, 100, 200, 300, and 1gbps

craggy pecan

I probably misunderstood you

#

I thought you were saying you could get 1Gbit for $10
