I've never actually used a 3rd party VPN, but I have spun up AWS instances to route certain traffic over them 🙂

A VPN is good when you need data to travel from an unsecure connection to somewhere secure. Eg, you're on open wifi. You don't trust it so you turn a VPN on. It packages up and encrypts data and sends it somewhere secure where it's unpacked and dropped back into the internet to travel freely.

Or you use it when you need to hide your identity or location.
