honestly for 1440p you can just stay with a 4070 unless youre planning on moving to 4k anytime soon

steep girder
#

Imagine tagging a soundcloud song and the moment you post or edit it, all other songs with the same tags have something happen to them. Or the artists all get notified at once lol

wise pumice

jesus christ shut up already 😭

digital prairie

Tbh, given my 3080's performance at 1440p, the 4070 will do just fine.

As long as it isn't cyberpunk or you're trying to push 240hz in non-esports titles, you're fine.

2080 can't run Cyperpunk with RTX off 1080p on max

ive upgraded storage and added a gpu.. now if i want to get better gpu or cpu i need a new psu

steep girder
#

Confirmed because a buddy of mine played on that card. And the lag got bad enough to affect playability when he tried to stream it to disc at the same time lol. Honestly 1440p cyberpunk on max what even runs it

#

Without RTX. Like 240Hz 1080p maxed out I'd bet there is no consumer grade card still to get it up to 240fps

wise pumice

i can see that

steep girder

Well no I stopped talking about the tag crap

graceful burrow

Zero people in chat ever enjoy it

steep girder

I am trying to join in to current topic. Because honestly can anyone answer what can run cyperpunk on max above 200fps even 1080?

wise pumice
#

my rx 6600 probably can

#

(joke , please dont write 10 more paragraphs)

steep girder
#

1080p raytrace on ultra 4090 24gb it says can't even do 200fps running cyberpunk

#

Not even 144 lol

digital prairie
#

It gets pretty close, though with DLSS 3.5

steep girder
#

Radeon I think the bench results they just turned rtx off lmfao

steep girder
digital prairie
#

DLSS 3.5 = ray reconstruction, so yes

steep girder
#

Uhh.. it's not? Raytrace as in raytrace lighting. I think mean that if you use dlss while raytracing is on, it helps to smooth it out. So it'll 'reconstruct' what's in between rays

lyric flower
#

@wise pumice i tried asking in techsource dc too and all im getting is people telling me get amd 😭

#

but i dont want amd!!!

wise pumice
#

why not

digital prairie
#

ray reconstruction only works with path tracing enabled

steep girder
#

Honestly if rtx is off and you're at 1080p, why are you even using DLSS? Try turning it off. Did ever try it? Maybe it will look good still

lyric flower
wise pumice
#

for me amd and nvidia are the same since i only play games on my pc ... its just that amd is cheaper

steep girder
#

DLSS is literally supersample frame without the real supersampled rendering. So it just guesses and fills in what's in between the pixels

#

I'm no expert on this but that should be basically it. An upscaler but with AI training somehow. I mean for what it's worth it's an awesome upscale. Def better than all the old ones like 2xSAI or bicubic n sht.

MSI GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB GAMING X TRIO Graphics Card

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB WINDFORCE OC Graphics Card @wise pumice which one should i get

wise pumice
#

probably the cheapest one

digital prairie
#

DLSS 2/3 (supersampling), 3 (frame generation), and 3.5 (ray reconstruction) are all separate toggles. It's a lot of tech under a single umbrella of DLSS, which can just be better described as "more frames toggle" at this point.

steep girder
#

But if you want more perf try turning either the DLSS off or MSAA. Keep just one of them on

digital prairie
wise pumice
#

usually performance between gpu brands is negligible

i like the msi one cuz it looks a bit pretty

@digital prairie it's a dell oem 3080, only modifcation it needed was some extra thermal paste to fill a small airgap between the heatsink and plate above the memory, brought my memory hotspot from 106c to 81c when i was mining eth

steep girder
#

Thing is in theory any and all use is 'wear' on silicon

agile lake
#

only wear you'd see is maybe on the power delivery?

steep girder
#

But 100% all cores for multiple consecutive hours idk. It's definitely the least possible optimum state for it to be in during that timespan

steep girder
agile lake
#

heat cycling on mosfets / etc

#

over time, that would likely be a cause before silicon related death

steep girder
#

Like vrms? That's the most important thing I'd say

#

Yeah VRM mos?

digital prairie
#

power delivery from the mosfets and VRMs would go long before the silicon

agile lake
#

@digital prairie this

digital prairie
#

That's why motherboards get more expensive over time and cpus get cheaper over time. The cpus live forever and the mobos slowly die.

brazen haven
#

huh my browser sudenly used like 40-70% cpu and i killed the prosess and nothing closed and it seems fine. od bugg for shure

steep girder
#

Yeah I'd bet they do. Also when the VRM goes idk probably only two possible outcomes: it still delivers some power or not lol

agile lake
#

either you get no beans or all the beans

steep girder
#

Do mosfets become insulator or conductor when they die? Or are there multiple scenarios

digital prairie
#

Pretty sure they become no-power-delivery-o.

Usually 3rd terminal you deliver voltage to control it. Whatever there's def way more to vrm than just mosfets

digital prairie

I really do.

steep girder

But again idk if I ever had vrm on mobo go either. Like literally always the entire system somehow after not using it or thrashing around bare in some cupboard/drawer

digital prairie
steep girder

I usually try with at least new PSU. So that's not it

#

I'd try the chip by itself to truly know but never have another mobo for that socket lol. It's ancient by then

steep girder
brazen haven
#

i whould send a pic but i cant

steep girder
#

Or you short out the third terminal with the control voltage or whatever. Not sure about vrm mos but looks like it takes lotsa volts

steep girder
# brazen haven burning over the insulating layer.

Right yeah or you overvolt it and fry it. But that's what I was basically asking. So you can fry some insulating components in there. I'm guessing insulating layer is diff from the actual semiconductor

brazen haven
#

and you have doping as well. adding impuritis to change the conductivity

steep girder
#

Yeah I get the basic idea of it. Just looked it up to remind myself and realized I forgot that diff type of transistor operate fairly diff even from the outside. MOSFET it matters which voltage is higher to use as switch

#

And there's also an operating range...

brazen haven
#

yea they are fairly complex. its not just an on or off switch

steep girder
#

Idk either way yeah I never want a VRM to die in any way lol. Apparently you can short a vrm mos so that's one way I know. Before that, I was only aware of the importance PSU has. If the PSU isn't delivering clean enough power or you end up with vdroop, vsag, vdip, vhang, whatever, it loads the vrm more and it dies faster

brazen haven
#

and thats why your psu has overcurent protection

#

i hope

steep girder
#

The MOS idk but I'd certainly wish they were cooled better on a system I have because they're always the hottest thing during idle at like mid 40s C range. Then again I don't have my voltages fixed and they are uncoupled completely however that works. My voltages are just stock settings tbh. They go between like sub-1V to 1.4 depending on the clock

manic torrent
#

Time for a drive I think

steep girder
#

Apparently I can save my vrm a bunch of life time by fixing voltages and a few other settings... meh though. I might have higher chance of frying. It needs like around the maximum voltages I end up with at full load. Did trial and error. Idk if I fix it to 1.4V, I might be wearing vrm less but the CPU will suffer instead right

#

Constant high temps, etc. Fans being loud all the time, room heating up within fastest possible time of like 30m. I'd rather have variable voltages. Unless I'm not running certain few games I play, all my use might as well be idle lol

#

Like what is using browser? It revs up a bit a start up or updates itself. Then it's -6.9% no core load. But then again, certain sites I leave tabs open and it uses a lot of CPU for some reason

digital prairie
#

I feel like some programs just reserve portions of your system resources if they detect that they're free.

#

Like aside from crypto mining, what on earth can just in a pure abstract sense the frontend of a web app be doing when the tab isn't open let alone the entire tab's browser window is minimized from desktop lol

#

I once made a hackish workaround for some sht in frontend using java script and instead of any events in browser at all, I used a timer on repeat every few hundred millis or so. I immediately got scolded for it and had to redo it properly lmfao

digital prairie
#

CPU and GPU are idle to the max. If someone's crypto mining off <1% of my chip, I guess they've earned going under the radar

steep girder
#

Like in an html frontend, you're supposed to do everything at an event. The entire thing starting from root-most elements (window and such which contain even html element itself) loads at one point. Things inside can be hovered, focused, unfocused, etc. Most things are implemented such that at times they will resize. Window resize event is very important and useful. Inside it html can get resized and the rest like body, blah

digital prairie
#

Might just be programs holding onto their unneeded memory allocations because they detect the overall memory pool is still healthy

steep girder
#

There are a few initial events when you "load" a page standardized. Load but there's also ready and a few others should be. So actually you have an event for when the document is "ready" which I recall is safer to use than like window loaded. Your browser tells you when the entire doc is loaded as well as when it finishes rendering it and all client-sided calculations which automatically happen based on potentially other things in doc. So like the entire doc gets obtained, then perhaps a div's height is 100% which means that its parent element's height 100%. The parent could also be a percentage. There are units like vw and vh which are hundreths of window v and h. So they change. You do things before and after any event gets to you from browser

unreal wing
#

i have a 10400f and im looking to upgrade, is the 10600kf a decent upgrade?

steep girder
#

But then you can also take the dark path and (ironically still use an event or just run something within a script block element which will ultimately happen when that element is loaded or ready don't remember exactly. So still at event but just outside of it and you can't get any of its parameters back if any. Then you proceed to start a loop of timeouts which calls a function. In that function... what do you do?

#

I calculated a moving box's dimensions and position and crap. Based on scrolling and the page's main content in the center which varied since people had different window size, etc. Then I set that floating alert box accordingly.

steep girder
# manic torrent You are the phrase "enough knowledge to be dangerous" personified.

Well no. I mean it's probably common knowledge among frontenders who use any js in browsers. All browsers have it too and it's not specific to moz or chrome either. It's very basic crap. Even I felt that it was some of the most hackish crap I ever did in that field (and surely enough others reciprocated by not even accepting it lmfao).

jaunty compass
#

I have one in a spare machine and it runs fine it's not what I'd call slow

steep girder
#

But my point is that if you get something running all the time even when tab isn't open... what can you do in those procedures? What could an html frontend of a web app possibly be doing when it's not open?

#

I feel like the answer is literally not a thing. If a js code block is running something in a loop when you're minimized, you might be safe to assume that it's at best of actually 0 use to you (crypto miner on the other hand I guess are pretty much exact opposite; try thinking of other real life examples because I'm struggling).

steep girder
#

I can't write an industry standard modern app from stack end to end. And yet I can look at a guy's frontend code and tell that it's almost certainly misuse of that very front facing tip of the stack. And by extension, it would mean that immediately after it you might have things missing as well. So like you want to request information asynchronously as client and see it on frontend. That information is unique (maybe somehow derivative of the parameters for that very same request each time). But then you want to retain it somehow together perhaps displayed at once. You accumulate whatever data you got in asynchronous request's response per an entire session

Well I'm not making it up. I swear I made a JS loop, put it into a WP site, got yelled at and had to redo it using existing event (across all browsers including safari). I mean it was bad because to make it work even half-decently, I had code firing in a loop every timespan shorter than half a second. Then before I told them why it was so much laggier, I raised it to like 750ms. Then 800ms and stopped whenever it wasn't noticeable on my machine. But then the element began acting choppy. If you resized tab, it jumped into correct place that same 800ms later. Literally the only thing in entire site that had this.

steep girder

That's actually something I never even looked up. I mean it matters because your DOM tree will have everything happen to it either when you're in that completely separate window with a dom tree (or more shadow ones nowadays too... wtf). The other option of two is it will happen if you resized window when you show that tab again (and close the others making them inverse cases of the exact dilemma). My opinion is the event should fire as soon as you bring tab back.

Ideally I think it's the exact opposite in every single way. Browsers should implement what we assume is the same toolkits and such for their scripting engine, all the same CSS attribs and values and ultimately behaviors. It should be standardized and the browsers must implement it correctly. Otherwise it's considered to be regressive behavior. I mean regression from the rest of browsers implementing that same standard and maybe iteration/version/revision of it. But we have that. W3 is the official standard holder right?

Once somebody like 2 cars ahead hit a deer. I couldnt see right away looked like some cardboard box or some sht. Then I thought it was a person maybe. Nope. It was a deer with its side literally smashed in. Still alive. Messed up

#

Guy in front barely dodged it. It kind of moved to the side. We stopped to look. I make eye contact with it and out of nowhere it starts trying to run again. I was like go go go. It almost charged into the side of our car...

#

Guy who hit it literally drove off. Everyone did. Kinda irresponsible in hindsight

full fossil
#

nah

#

those fellas in the green pants want your deer tags or want to bust your balls for killing a deer out of season

steep girder
#

Lol. Well Canada jokes aside, I'm sure there's a fine at least. Kinda makes sense though. You VDM'd a deer with your car and somebody has to come and clean like 400lbs carcass off the road so that cars can drive through lmao

#

Also maybe because nobody reported it guy shows up and nobody told him it could still be alive idk. Walks up to it and gets kicked in the head. I think that could even kill someone, right? I doubt anyone with that profession walks up to a large animal and assumes it's dead tbh. I wouldn't

#

Again, its side is mashed in. It's practically in half. I think the car just straight up ran over it. Or it could have been one guy hit it and the one after ran it over. I remember seeing at least one car pretty mashup too. So idk about creaming one. What happened to the car lmao

steep girder
#

Then again, it was dying panic mode. Not sure how anyone could have put it out of misery without some sort of firearm lmao. So yeah in Ontario the only legal way is if somebody is going to or from hunting trip or gun range of some sort... or a crossbow perhaps. I doubt it. Maybe run it over again if you got a titanium bumper on heavy duty truck lol

#

I wouldn't. If I had gun license and luckily had weapons in trunk, I'd maybe do it had I considered any of this at all. I was too shocked though. Pretty traumatic stuff. It was in a suburb of Toronto on Yonge Street. Pretty busy. By no means was it even rural area. Elk and moose n sht. They happen anywhere goes to show. Looking for some advice, I know computers I'm just not up to date with phones right now.

I have someone looking for an iPhone around the the $500 CAD range. Wondering what their best option would be.

I've seen the 12/13 and SE models just not sure what's best value-performance.

I was thinking about the upcoming graphical update and system requirement changes for Final fantasy XIV. My wife's computer has an rtx 2070, so she's going to be fine, but my brother has a 1650. If the a770 has really good performance, that appears to be a very cost-effective upgrade.

graceful burrow
#

I would not recommend first Gen Intel gpus unless you seriously know what you're getting into

#

It's drivers have some quirks that will throw off and upset users not ready for them

#

They're fairly stable now but you'd be better off buying some amd 6000 gpu if you want value

#

Doesn't sound like your bro needs cuda or rtx so no point in paying the green tax

neon mesa
#

judging from die size and synthetics though A770 true potential should lie at the 3070

I had a Ryzen 9 5900X and a 2070 Super that I was starting to have random black screen lockups on. I upgraded the video card to a 7900 XTX, and the problem changed from black screen lockups to random reboots. So I upgraded the motherboard RAM and CPU as well to a Ryzen 7900x3d. All of my problems are gone now (computer running solid), but I'd really like to reuse that expensive hold hardware if there's any way to do so. Based on the fact that replacing the video card did not fix the problem, I kind of think the 2070 super might be okay.

@wispy marsh I spent like 4 months troubleshooting the thing off and on, and finally spent an entire weekend before upgrading doing serious troubleshooting. I even hooked up in oscilloscope to the power leads on my power supply to make sure that that wasn't the problem. I tried everything including underclocking the CPU and swapping RAM. I was unable to identify any actual faults, so at a frustration I just bought a whole new computer essentially by replacing all the parts inside. 😕

@wispy marsh That's not a bad idea honestly. I did consider using it just to encode my Linux ISOs, but my new computer is more than twice as fast as that. I have a Synology disk station that I use for serving my Linux ISOs, so I do all of my compression up front into the formats I want and then copy them to the disk station. No real-time encoding required.

@wispy marsh I could do that, but all of my Linux IOSs come from physical Linux disks that I own, so they only need to be processed the one time, then they can be read any number of times without needing any real time compression.
I also record a lot of video from my gaming, and being able to capture in AV1 is really nice. All of my video gets encoded to av1 now instead of HEVC that I used to use.
