Yes you are right some wordpress instances are ass but thats due to the person not knowing what they are doing which you can't really fault wordpress on, its open source anyway. If its setup properly, security harden, and maintain then its great. Most wordpress sites I see 90 percent of the time were compromised from never being updated or maintained.

The only cost for wordpress though is you self host it and average shared hosting for a single site can be had for under 10 dollars in some cases and wordpress tied with woocommerce is free too versus paying Shopify Basic 40 bucks a month though if you are a small buisness you will likely go with Shopfiy for Small businesses for 105 a month
