OOF every time someone brings up Hydrogen as an energy storage medium I get so mad. Like it's so dumb.

Like you have the obvious issue which is 98% of hydrogen is currently created through steam reforming which is taking methane (aka natural gas) and stripping off the hydrogen which leaves you behind with CO2 which is in the vast vast majority of cases is just released into the air making it worse than just burning the methane in the first place because the steam reforming process takes quite a bit of energy.

Then you have the maybe less obvious problems with hydrogen that are even if you are using surplus renewables to do electrolysis okay at least it's not stupid on the face of it, but the volumetric energy density of hydrogen and the storage requirements to keep it in liquid form and the fact that hydrogen will eat its way through any tank you try to contain it in make it stupid.

like you need to store it at 14K (-259C) to liquify it and trying to hold it under pressure to get a reasonable energy density but not liquify it you need to hold it at 100s of atmospheres of pressure which speeds up the said eating away at the tank you want to store it in.

When like compressed air for example needs like around 5-10 atmospheres of pressure at around -40C can have reasonable energy density and wont eat through your tanks. Like really Hydrogren is SO dumb.

Oh Hydrogen fuel cells are another level of stupid ontop and Hydrogen combustion engines except if your talking like F1 cars and super/hyper cars of the future where cost isn't a big concern hydrogen combustion engines will always be next next level stupid, because hydrogen will always be expensive due to said storage issue, the amount of energy it takes etc and Hydrogen combustion engines are less efficient than fuel cells, so you are burning more of a more expensive fuel.

hydrogen fuel cell cars are another level of stupid because you have to take that expensive hydrogen ship and store it which is going to be expensive to and then covert it back into electricity at the point of use at 40-60% efficiency then you have all the regular inefficiencies of a electric car which to be fair only ad up to around ~5%.

Where as with an electric car it's 95% efficient and you can while they are hooked upto the grid can be used as Grid storage so they help solve a problem rather than having to add extra capacity to the Gird to turn electric and water into hydrogen which again is horribly inefficient meaning even more spare capacity that you need, and if you are going to say "Ah we can just use the electricity when we have spare capacity." Okay what happens to the electlysis plant the remaining 60 - 80% of the time?

It's just sits there and does nothing... like that would make it even more expensive to produce hydrogen.
