You only need your personal files, so you should be able to back those up before doing the fresh install. But you'd have the old drive to boot up until you wipe it.

you definitely need to install the OS again after installing new drives

I think you meant NVME only Laptops making it hard to expand the storage?

because yes, that's how I feel with lots of Laptops nowadays. NVME is still expensive in some regions

that some people would just prefer having a SATA SSD that is much cheaper than the NVME counterparts

or even worse, the nvme drive they're looking for is not available for some reason

Pretty sure 2 cpu is automatically ram has 2 NUMA domains

It's always exactly double price for whichever cpus you buy

As soon as you get the second hard parallel thread in addition to your first, whichever software your server is running needs to even be able to make use of it.

But to answer your question I think dual socket server boards exist specifically because servers might require more than a current generation architecture's limit of certain sht. Idk more pcie maybe

steep girder

When I worked for a company as sys admin, our host in montreal said our main production physical machine saturated everything to even add additional storage. We apparently saturated our pcie, sata and even network. The last additional storage upgrade was SSD array over iSCSI (ethernet)

#

We couldn't even do that again because it would require an additional ethernet connection lmfao. Their guys told us we maxed its generation and only full switch to next one was possible.

#

Also we maxed out its ram which was like 1536GB. We were gonna be able to do 2TB or something after server upgrade

But yeah terabytes of ram lmfao. The physical server was just a windows hyper-v host lmfao. It was pretty funny opening task manager and seeing memory usage in TB

steep girder
#

Whatever had the RAM and runs the hyper-v guests must have had its virtual disks on volume of same host with decent speed. Even iSCSI was used in an act of desperation eventually. Honestly, iSCSI wasn't that bad because it connected storage in same physical location

#

But we ran out of even ethernet cards lol. To add another required additional pcie lanes. To add sata pcie lanes. Anything else really. Apparently we saturated that. I mean I hope it was dual socket because if not true limit of that gen might be 2x that

It is certainly true that AMD's drivers have improved the stability and performance of their cards in the time after the cards original launch. Big difference between day one of the 6000 series cards for instance and now.

neon mesa
#

i am really tired that people are making the "fine wine" of AMD a pro

broken folio
#

To some extent nVidia seems not to need to do that so much.

echo canopy
neon mesa
#

the reason AMD cards are "fine wines" because they're absolute garbo at launch

#

you can't bring more performance to a chip over their potential

broken folio
neon mesa
#

if they got "better" it simply means they fucked it up at launch

#

in reality they simply reach their actual potential

echo canopy
neon mesa
#

there is no black magic
it's just maximizing the potential

#

like a car that can do 300mph but held back by a 2 ton trailer

okay and it simply proves my point

they simply removed that 2 ton trailer in the analogy

so i don't see your point

most of AMDs more relevant driver issues, were more so crippling to the point where you couldn't use the card comfortably

steep girder
#

nvidia gpu owners have a choice of two drivers on linux for a while now:

  • Open source free driver developed from scratch in typical free linux contribution way
  • Closed source proprietary driver released by nvidia for linux
#

Usually the one by nvidia is more current in terms of functionality. To be honest I never even tried gaming with nouveau (open source). I think once a long time ago on like 6600GT gentoo we compiled nouveau. Couldnt even run quake 2 properly

#

But the real pain is that open source community must write driver from scratch since nvidia won't release sources lol.

long briar
#

AMD gets better with age Sort of, but there's no point in which the 6950xt can't do something the XTX can other than AV1

crude jasper
#

XTX uses 45w more gaming and pulls 100W more peak

#

XT uses like 35w more and 70W more peak

steep girder
#

Well you need minimally peak. Unless you can set like power limit to whatever will go no higher than what you have max load

#

Imagine having to carefully set game options to avoid instant shutdown. Sounds iffy

#

Then like oh no oops I turned a bit and cobblestone tesselated path came into view as well. Power becomes off instantly. Game definitely didn't save that day; next boot like C drive error check is actually needed for real

#

Most people skip error check because fck it I don't want it. Like literally everyone immediately goes into panic mode to snipe any key as fast as possible before it starts.

manic torrent
#

because file systems don't have journals

#

I mean, it's not like I disagree with your premise that the cards shouldn't peak like that, it's a bad thing, but the worse thing was not knowing.

#

It's a physical design issue - the cards did not have sufficient capacitors to cover transient load.

steep girder
#

Well irl if windows starts checking ntfs filesystem I know for a fact it's because it wasn't unmounted properly and it still has the dirty bit marked. If the dirty bit is still on at boot it means no matter what last shutdown happened before it had time to properly unmount it

full fossil
#

I have an issue with my corsair ram, it's detected as two different sticks and one of the doesnt light up on the bottom anyone knows how to fix this? Can't find anything.

manic torrent
#

when was the last time you saw windows do a filesystem check that was interruptable - or even visible

steep girder
#

And something did write to it at least to minimally mark file system dirty. That's the proper way to mount ntfs r/w: you mark it dirty and only reset the bit when you unmount.

manic torrent
#

and it's.... very far from that simple. modern file systems are extremely resilient.

fossil frost
#

and thats mostly because the "eject" button on my PC has never once been touched... ever

steep girder
manic torrent
steep girder
#

Next reboot after that, it actually gave me the old skool timer press any key to skip checking. I didn't at that point and let it scan. It ended up fixing something on all 3 ntfs volumes so thank god I let it lol

manic torrent
steep girder
#

It was like a few sec total. Sad reality is that even back in the day, like 99% of people all came across it at least once in their life. Everyone always treated it like immediate panic mode and sniped any key before timer.

fossil frost
#

btw, odd question... there are those cables that let you plug a sata or usb drive into a pc in read only mode... actively stops writes... is there an oposite cable, that will allow write only, and no reads?

manic torrent
steep girder
#

But if there are errors in ntfs, can't it lead to worse corruptions if you continue to write without fixing?

#

Or at least if you have orphaned files which it can recover fully into that lost.dir or whatever you can lose them eventually?

steep girder
#

Like I've had errors where it fixed and I got random files appear in lost dir with their name and contents intact. Just the path somehow got lost I guess.

manic torrent
#

Orphaned files are inodes that have lost their primary name, but are not deleted.

steep girder
#

It was random files which I recognized where they went I recall but don't think they were recently accessed at all...

manic torrent
#

also what the shitting fuck are you doing to your system. I have not experienced a file system issue in windows that I can recall (so like.. last 5ish years?).

steep girder
#

Well thats my main point: you know if there's a forced check at bootup, the dirty bit wasn't unmarked. If you only have Windows boot and the ntfs volume is mounted and has letter in that windows boot, it wasn't unmounted properly.

glacial sand
#

Jesus christ

#

I had a dream where i was in school and we fucking got warned about a nuke incoming and i ran as fast as possible to the school bunker before the loudest sound i have ever heard in my life

steep girder
#

In that case, you can infer that Windows likely didn't know that the shutdown was happening. This means it couldn't have known to do proper procedure before shutting down; one of those is unmount all fs and unset the bit only then. It could have easily been that windows was still writing something to that volume

glacial sand
steep girder
#

Because ask yourself if Windows ever for a second pauses writing to all mounted volumes lmfao

timid meadow
#

Unraid is closer to a jbod then raid

steep girder
#

Aren't errors in fs and whatever redundancies those are separate levels

#

Pretty sure any redundancy across multiple hardware disks would minimally look at them as block devices

timid meadow
#

Idk the specifics. Just thought it was relevant because of the way unraid does its thing. I can pull any individual drive and read data from it as if it was never in the array

#

Similar to a standard windows drive

steep girder
#

Yeah I mean tbh raid-whatever that mirrors 2 drives doesn't do that right? You can't just take a drive out of raid and use it as one? Even though it's copy

manic torrent
broken folio
#

You can, it runs degraded. You shouldn't really do it though as you should get a new drive installed asap to get it rebuilding.

manic torrent

a software raid under linux for example would require you to run it degraded and would complain about it, but you could do it. You should be rebuilding asap though.

manic torrent
broken folio
#

so hav emore limited experience with how it handles RAID1

tired glade
#

Do you have enough drivers for raid5?

manic torrent
steep girder
#

But my prior question before was if I'm correct to say that for mirror raid, a file system error shouldn't exist. If the file system error is consistently copied over on both mirrored drives, the raid has no problems

manic torrent
#

you can have hardware data issues, you can have software data issues. You can have memory bit flipping. There's lots of ways you can end up with garbage

steep girder
manic torrent
#

"file system error" is meaningless though

steep girder
#

it's even hard to kind of define what an error is at that point. But ultimately

manic torrent
#

that's everything from a fundamentally corrupt filesystem with broken core data structures to the most minor of metadata update issues

#

in order to understand how something fails, you have to first understand how it WORKS

manic torrent
steep girder
#

Yeah lol. But ultimately you can say that there's always an intended resulting data on volume at any given point in time. This dumps everything together kind of. Error or corruption would be simply defined as any non-zero amount of bits read back inconsistent to what was 'supposed to be on it'.

manic torrent
#

RAID 5 is XOR of N-1 drives data on the Nth drive. So XOR(1) == 1 .... RAID1!

tired glade
#

Oh, you will do that way

timid meadow
#

And that concludes todays lesson from ClassroomBob

#

Do your homework kids. Come back tomorrow knowing what all the raid levels are for the pop quiz

tired glade

At best

steep girder
#

Wait tbh he did answer it. Kind of the same thing as what I said in question but instead of

#

'file system error doesn't exist' to RAID, he said 'file system error doesn't exist in general' lol

manic torrent
steep girder
#

I mean in ntfs file system error should exist in some way. You have all those nodes, records, whatever of the file system itself which can get corrupted. There are even checksums on that stuff alone right? Or it's just somehow unreadable correctly. NTFS checks and finds errors we said

tired glade
#

Has his system got corrupted?

pliant karma
#

lol I totally haven't done this with my laptop tooKEKW

steep girder
#

I was gonna say yes but I guess what I mean is my system partition's ntfs itself got corrupted countless times. But it always repaired mostly. The file system got corrupted not the system files themselves

#

System was windows nt of some sort. One time like one mp3 file itself that I know of got corrupted minimally. Not sure about file system but I wasn't paying attention to file system errors. I was looking more at the bad sectors found on it

Hello Everyone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fv68DWKQ9zA

There is this couple that lives off grid and they installed 10.5kW of solar in North Idaho... like is it just me or should they have went half wind half solar is such an latitude.

manic torrent
midnight idol
glass lantern
#

but there system is so oversized just because of their latitude with Half wind half solar each with a maxium of 5.25kW like for 6 months of the year it wouldn't even matter if the wind turbine was down.

midnight idol
glass lantern
#

like that 5.25kW of solar is a LOT of solar.

midnight idol
#

agreed

#

then again we have one of the largest solar farms
but at a latitude of like 35

glass lantern
#

the main issue with wind is that it's not really any good until you need a lot of power because the length of the turbine I believe has is wind speed x turbine length to the power of 4 so small turbines are kinda dumb, but 5.25kW aint small.

steep girder
#

@manic torrent Do you know anything about partitioning and file systems on cdroms? Because that's where I think nobody knows exactly what they're talking about to this day lol

#

You get like an audio cd which seems to have music tracks 2 and up but just track 1 sounds like 56k modem on steroids and makes your ears bleed

glass lantern
#

also small trubines are loud...

wispy marsh
manic torrent
steep girder
#

Turns out it's like 8pp game sprites and bytecode written on there with no index at all except an expected entry point to code which knows addresses of where sprite frames are

#

Now that's a file system that can't get errors. There is no file system

manic torrent
#

Dude. That is literally a file system.

manic torrent
steep girder
#

Yeah. The file system is there I guess but the index is like dynamic code which you only get once the code runs to that spot lmfao

manic torrent
#

Files are not real

steady void
#

Honey can be also used as a preventative mechanism for hayfever! Just start taking local fresh honey before the season starts and feel the magic! smart

manic torrent
#

Filesystems are not real. Your disk is a linearly addressable space that just has a bunch of data on it.

glass lantern
steep girder
#

Well the partitioning is weird on cds. Idk maybe you know. There's a trick with iso I remember because the partition tables are inside it. So you have tracks and a part for data but that's where partitioning can go. It was some weird sht like that. Iso is special somehow

glass lantern
#

with half wind half solar they probably wouldn't need at least such a large generator.

steep girder
manic torrent
manic torrent
steep girder
#

Yeah. CD tracks can have fs too I guess. You can probably even put a gpt partition table inside and read the audio as block device or something :P

glass lantern
#

Erm what, I don't think there are many fualt lines through Idaho so... unless you want to dig for a mile or so and even then not boil water but just get hot water, unless you are talking about using latent heat in the ground to run a heat pump.

steep girder
#

Although it's not meant for that for sure lol.

manic torrent
#

I mean you could, but there are very specific ways that CDs handle audio

manic torrent
winged ferry
#

are teamgroup ssds good?

steep girder
#

Yeah but you don't read it as audio like literally everyone else because those specific ways are standard audio formats. Not sure if there's even more than one because I only ever came across 44.1 16bit stereo

#

But since you consider game data like sprites still in a filesystem because something arbitrarily gets loaded as code and runs until eventually knowing where to read pictures from or something...

glass lantern
manic torrent
steep girder
#

Actually then it's like booting. The bios is whatever is on the machine w cd player. It knows track 1 and where on it to at least run game

manic torrent
steep girder
#

But still you could have like the game hard coded value which changes depending on version. Depending on which version though it multiplies by something and that's an address where first sprite frame is.

glass lantern
#

The only way I can think of getting electricity out of a 20C difference is to run a peltier cooler in reverse.

#

which would be insanely ineffecient

steep girder
#

Programmer: game data has additional 8kb before images start depending on version
File index: shifts by multiple of game version for some reason

glass lantern
#

technically it's possible to do with by running a heat pump, but heat pumps we can build would consume more electric than they would generate.

steep girder
#

Bad file system lol. Also probably repair and recover files

glass lantern
#

ah suppose a sterling engine might be able to get useful energy out.

#

but it would have to be a rather large engine and even then the efficency would be for shit.

#

better than a reverse peltier, but a 20C delta just isn't enough to do anything efficiently.

#

as said better to use it for making heating and cooling more efficent.

steep girder
#

But like in general a lot of power means heat expansion was from coal shoveles into furnace lmao

glass lantern
steep girder
#

Piston engine kinda more compact versiob tho

fierce moth
#

What's up everyone

steep girder
#

Its pushes piston up but sealed. Maybe where a lot of sterling engines heat expansion lost

glass lantern
steep girder
#

Then heats up by exploding briefly whenever it needs to in cycle. Times

manic torrent
steep girder
#

Diesl generator lol

manic torrent
#

Also, insulation >>>> energy.

steep girder
#

Timed combustion

manic torrent
#

Not expending energy you don't have to is way easier than generating it

crude jasper
#

last time i saw a stirling engine be used was for a fan ontop of a grill stove.

manic torrent
#

This is why you have to address it holistically

glass lantern
#

also the internal combustion engine is quite inefficient, but rather than a sterling engine you would use a gas turbine where weight and size is not a limitation.

manic torrent
steep girder
#

Weight isn't that important is it

#

Like gravity pulling piston down because theyre upright?

manic torrent
manic torrent
raven pelican
#

at least ICEs do what they were designed for quite well

glass lantern
#

Well with a gas turbine you just generate electricity then run the electric motors at whatever RPM you want.

steep girder
#

Oh wait mass timing and crap. But once you get rotor engine torqued up

crude jasper
raven pelican
#

if we're talking about peak efficiency, you'd achieve that by everyone going super fast all the time

steep girder
manic torrent
raven pelican
#

well, that isn't quite possible
peak efficiency isn't exactly attainable and every solution has flaws

manic torrent
raven pelican
#

VERY efficent

crude jasper
raven pelican
#

i mean just look at formula one engines

manic torrent
crude jasper
#

if you lose the flywheel you have total crud acceleration

steep girder
#

Yeah lol. Fusion because it fused into something that's about to fission harder immediately. Then you harness still nuclear fission energy ultimately by heating up water and moving a giant sterling engine lmfao

raven pelican
#

If you loose the flywheel you can't shift lmao

wise bison
#

I just got attacked by a onewheel

steep girder
#

Or turbine. Either way you boiled something to push with its heat

crude jasper
#

are we talking about the same sterling engines? cause it seems like you guys are talking more specifically steam engines

manic torrent
#

Sterling is a type of rotating assembly, not a specific power method.

raven pelican
#

Oh are we talking ice vs steam or whatever?

steep girder
crude jasper
#

well a stirling engine isn't a steam engine

#

one is closed loop vs something that needs to be topped up with water

#

stirling engine will never be opened again once manufactured

steep girder
#

But it's boiling a hella lot of water and there's a lot of this energy because atoms nucleus decays that heats up water

raven pelican
#

That looks like it would make like

#

No power

glass lantern
#

again not putting a gas tubine in a car though

crude jasper
# raven pelican No power

it does ~ just uses the same concept heatpipe CPU coolers do. it's more practical for setting on top of like a woodstove to power a fan

raven pelican
steep girder
#

But I think regardless there's no 100% efficiency in fission nuclear because you have to convert like electrons and positrons flying out. You could have neutrons shooting out too.

crude jasper
#

it needs a heat differential to make any power

steep girder
#

Idk but absorb it and yeah tbh it's already hot so nice kekw

raven pelican
#

100% efficiency isn't really realistically possible tbh

glass lantern
raven pelican
crude jasper
glass lantern
#

okay okay 7 mpg

raven pelican
#

that's fuel efficiency bro

steep girder
#

But in theory there can't be 100% efficiency in those reactions of fundamental force? It's all tied to like 0 kelvin perfect vacuum

#

I think in those conditions just physics gives you true 100% efficiency already. Absolute 0 can't be reached

raven pelican
#

well i bet the closer you get to 0 kelvin it probably becomes quite unstable?

steep girder
#

True vacuum I don't think exists anywhere either. Even intergalactic space apparently has its own non-zero temp and electromagnetic pressure or whatever

steep girder
crude jasper
#

it doesn't exist anywhere cause of quantum physics and particles popping up out of nowhere

glass lantern
raven pelican
#

lmao

manic torrent
raven pelican
#

lmao

crude jasper
manic torrent
#

the key to that is relativity.

turbid nexus
#

is eufy like a hard avoid or is it generally fine to use

steep girder
#

Idk it gets to a point where it's insanely unstable the more energy you spend on arranging it into some insane exotic combination of 69 quarks

gilded forge
#

nice

steep girder
#

Then it falls back apart in 6.9x10^-999999999999999999! seconds

#

Quarks pop up, disappear or change colors back into proton

manic torrent
turbid nexus
#

ah ok

#

they seem like good deals and support homekit but ill avoid them

#

whats the problem with them, i assume use security?

manic torrent
steep girder
#

Like same energy you spent on some glueball or tetraquark falls back apart into stable thing quickly. The energy is transferred back that way

turbid nexus
manic torrent
steep girder
#

That's how I understand it because the official answer is tetraquarks won't turn the earth strange and everyone dies

fierce moth
#

Eh, that would be a interesting way to die tho

manic torrent
fierce moth

Nope

manic torrent

fierce moth

I don't get what of most of Ur saying lol

manic torrent
#

... and it does or does not, or (does and does not) affect things 😄

steep girder
#

It does the classic observation. It does and does not affect super observer

#

Super observer sees two of whatever classic is at once. If you're talking about affecting what happens then they see both at once idk

#

Superposition of what's going on lol and what's not

#

Makes sense I'll stop trying to visualize

fierce moth
#

🥴

steep girder
#

Picture aside from figuring out the which is which observer or the physics observing but you also see from two people looking at something and measuring at once

#

Simply doesn't happen it seems. People do.

#

People as individuals seem to be only thing expressing/interpreting eachother physically

#

The outcome of quantum physics does happen a human must admit.

#

Because it's shared by the opposite thing human communicated to. There's a positive logic just in physics somewhere maybe ;)

#

It happens because two classical observer. You can't say anything more than what's observed happens and the rest doesn't. That should be it.

if you like it that's fine, i just hate it. 10 works fine, i advise people to stick with what works

graceful burrow

i advise people to do what they want

buoyant timber

the only thing that bugged me personally are either easily fixed (like the context menus) or were fixed with a patch (like opening taskmanager fro your taskbar)

ashen zodiac

to be fair you don't need the new context menu for it to be useable

graceful burrow
#

an os that requires you to edit the registry to make it the way you like
ive done similar modifications to 10 as well lmao

#

average power user things

ashen zodiac
buoyant timber
#

and if you are power user enough use all of those you can take the minute to change a registry key

ashen zodiac
#

7zip is not a power user app lmao

#

you need it practically because of Windows's awful filetype support

buoyant timber
#

well than have fun getting stuck on what the "last good one" in your opinion, basically all qualify for that position for some people (except like vista ig)

nimble junco

why is linux so complicated

nimble junco

not really
what's giving you trouble?

yeah linux has a huge gatekeeping problem

nimble junco
# graceful burrow not really what's giving you trouble?

docker, so I setup my minecraft server with docker but I cant control the folder only docker can, but without access to the folder its a pain to install plugins and edit config files idk how to get access to the folder without revoking the access of docker

buoyant timber
#

I mean that is more on docker

graceful burrow
#

yeah
idk shit about docker i wont lie

#

ive only set up one container on windows and had no clue what was goin on lol

buoyant timber
#

iirc you had to set up the shared folder right so you get access to it

#

but has been like 3 years since I last touched docker and I barely did anything with it

nimble junco
buoyant timber
#

pepeThonk
did you create the folder as sudo?

ashen zodiac
nimble junco
#

owning the folder causes errors withing docker because it cant acess the file if I take over ownership

manic torrent
buoyant timber
#

can you just chmod 777 the folder?

manic torrent
#

and the just add the docker bits

ashen zodiac
ashen zodiac
#

then idk

nimble junco
#

cause I can run docker commands without sudo its just accesing the folder that I cant do

buoyant timber
#

you might have created the folder with sudo in terminal and try to access it with a different user in the GUI
chmod is for giving access rights to folders 777 is just all perms for everyone

manic torrent
#

Ahhhh, yeah so when it's building/assembling the docker it's failing to write the jar file.

nimble junco
manic torrent
#

Oh, so it has nothing to do with docker

#

A) how is ftpd setup. B) FTP is garbage, it's 2023

wispy marsh
#

Might be docker user having insufficient perms

nimble junco
#

it has to do with docker because I cant write to the folder even on the main server, my perms for that folder are read only(docker owns the folder)

wispy marsh
#

You'd have to know how to type words to use scp

manic torrent
nimble junco
manic torrent
#

You mean your user doesn't have access.

nimble junco
#

and taking ownership of it gives docker errors

nimble junco
manic torrent

what are the permissions on it.

manic torrent
#

now check the plugins directory, and also check what user the FTP daemon is running as

nimble junco
manic torrent
#

loooool, yeah ok well wtf do you think

#

you're using ftpd from the host to put files in the docker dir?

#

a) again, don't use FTP, ever.
b) you're doing it wrong.

#

throw all of this away, and start again - what are you trying to ACHIEVE

#

sftp the file to your homedir, sudo to root and copy it in.

#

or put it in the docker build file/script.

nimble junco
#

so Im trying to transfer a file with filazilla to the plugins directory but I only have read access and docker setup that folder I want access so that I can put files in the plugins folder

manic torrent
#

or ssh to the docker.

manic torrent
#

you are conflating problems with proposed solutions.

#

realistically, not even that - your issue is you want to get the plugin floodgate-spigot.jar in there

#

ssh to server sudo wget file

nimble junco
#

for some reason these plugins dont work with wget

manic torrent
#

ahhh, I hate it when my files go weird

#

classic linux/docker problem.

nimble junco
#

the issue is perms but idk how to fix that

manic torrent
#

no

#

Your issue is you have no idea what you're doing, so you're basically changing random parts of it and hoping it works

#

how were they weird, what were the errors.

Knight, seeing what the student was doing, spoke sternly: "You cannot fix a machine by just power-cycling it with no understanding of what is going wrong."

Knight turned the machine off and on. The machine worked.

anyone know some good applications to use in windows powershell?

Many
