100% some of the linux design choices are wack, the best ones are just off brands of windows or mac lmao, or the ones they use for rice like i3 where it's nothing like windows or mac at all.

As far as features, I guess it depends on what you're talking about since windows or mac has a lot bundled in whereas most linux distros should be able to install whatever you want, if it exists.

And for gaming, you're on point tbh the best option seems to be virtualization with GPU passthrough which is basically just running windows with extra steps.

Ahh. Well that's probably just as I said. The range extending all the way down to true black adds contrast. You can play around with brightness contrast and gamma on LCDs or pick out certain panels which have decent colors

But the actual color distribution can be hard to see unless you display test images specifically for measuring that

Depending on codec and compression level, the range of just luminosity itself can suffer. Look at some really compressed videos. They can have even brighter black than what your display is showing.

And tbh that's the whole idea. If you lossy compress colors into a table, you'll see the exact effect you're looking out for only it's not caused by display

All you need is a bitmap of a color palette with the same color depth as your display mode.

There are different arrangements but the general idea is the same thing as those UI color picker elements like RGB triangle or that box you see back in ms paint days where you 'define custom color'

And those charts are designed to emphasize some bias or whatever in terms of panel color range
