that's not how it works, the higher the GPU prices, the less it matters about small costs per expencive gpu, if the market buys mid range gpus at 600$, then it is absolutely worth it to make it decent. It is when prices are normal and low end costs 100-150$ the cheapscates come out

All data is broken up into chunks called "placement groups", and then copied so there's three copies of each "chunk" of data. so, you might have say, a 10GB file. That 10GB file is broken up into, for example, 20x 500MB chunks. Each chunk is then copied so there's 3 copies of each chunk. Then those chunks are distributed so that no single disk AND no single server has more than 1 copy of each chunk

if you want to read that file, you can grab multiple chunks from multiple disks and multiple servers at once in order to distribute the IOPs and maximize the speeds, kind of like bittorrent.

drive mirroring is far more primitive, while Ceph lets you add and remove disks, servers, etc. of any sizes as you please, while growing or shrinking capacity accordingly. No simple drive mirroring can do that. BTRFS RAID 1 can, but only on a single server

meanwhile, if you have a datacenter full of servers, and you have 1 server with 3 hard drives, and those drives are in a 3-way mirror, you still are out of luck if that server fails for some reason
