The client auto retries. Basically it's a bug in de-duplication and the way retries are handled. It shouldn't even be that hard to fix, but it's probably on a technical debt list somewhere that will never ever get fixed, because it doesn't impact the vast majority of users the vast majority of the time.

But... Would have been solved if it was designed right in the first place.

Even if that's as simple as making a hash of the first message, and then submitting it with retry x. You can then sort it out when it's being published, because if it's a retry, you should check for double posts.

That way you're not spending compute checking for double posts except when you need to.

I wrote a paper last year on the environmental impact and financial cost of small businesses upgrading from hard drives to solid state drives. It's not necessarily applicable here since I didn't research power supplies, but I concluded that reusing hard drives is both better for the environment and wallets than upgrading, even factoring in things like maintenance and downtime!
