ahh this annoys me that people keep buying the BS that AMD's thermal issues are because of the IHS because cooler compatibility, The IHS being thinker is a small effect, the bigger effect is that AMD increased the thickness of the TIM which solder is a good thermal conductor compared to thermal paste, but compared to copper it's shit tier. So increasing the TIM thickness even by 0.025mm will have a large effect on cooling performance, while increasing the thickness of the IHS by 3mm because of coppers much higher thermal conductivity will not have much of an effect at all.

The reason I have heard for the increase in thickness of the TIM is that AMD planned to significantly change the underside of the CPU for Zen 5 or more likely now Zen 6 which would increase the Z height of the die, and apparently they are to cheap to just make a new IHS for the new guts when they do it. Like I'm not saying it would be cheap to me and you to change the tooling for a new IHS, but for AMD it would have been peanuts like a couple of million dollars for a whole generation of CPUs where they are going to make billions.
