• BTRFS parity implementation is still broken - 1 months to scrub your pool isn't very realistic
• bcachefs isn't done yet

• SnapRAID has a number of limitations/flaws being a file-base parity solution

Yes. With BTRFS, you can just add drives as you get them. Buy a couple 14-18TB disks now. When you run low on disks, just buy a few more, of whatever size is the most affordable.

the issue I have is I want to be able to easily upgrade and add storage. ZFS is not great for that. Even though you can expand a vdev, it's wastful. Say you have 6 disks. They are 10TBs and $100 each (I pulled the number out of thin air). a 14TB disk is $150. To upgrade your ZFS pool, you need to buy 6 14TB disks, to upgrade all of your disks. This gives you an extra 24TBs raw at the cost of $900.

OR, you can buy two 14TB disks at a cost of $300, and add 28TBs of storage to your pool, if you have a filesystem that can just easily add new disks

ZFS is great when you have a static amount of storage you don't plan to change. it's not the ideal filesystem for a less static disk layout

now, yes - you could buy those two disks and put them into a ZFS mirror, and add that mirror as a new vdev, and then you'd have 14TBs of new storage. It's still not as good of a solution as just adding a new disk to an existing pool.
