lol
i will continue to say i instead of ultra
no it doesn't.
is it a 13 year old chip? or a 1 year old chip?
i5 doesn't explain shit.
Also, they could make other things than Lakes with the namechange
this^
WAIT, LETS CALL THEM ELON.
Elon 14900k
This^
What does Ultra explain when there will be 3 Ultra series?
that really is infuriating
ÆLON 14900k
ashllon sounds like athelon
I am not high enough to put up with some of this chatroom. holy shit.
Lets just go back to Pentiums
Pentium III 14900k
lol
I'm not high at all and I'm having a good time
I feel like "Pentium" has such a respectable weight behind it
Pentium used to be top tier. Now it's a baby cpu
The symbol associated with powah 💪 PENTIUM
or Celeron?
Because it does
Celeron is too close to celery, but Pentium is the Penultimate
That's why it's so dumb what they've done to the name. They don't want to drop the iconic pentium branding, but then they put it on their garbage CPUs now
Well, celery and average Celeron have about the same compute power
But Core was ok. Why are they changing it?
Need somebody with a celeron/pentium to do the web basemark for me so I can brag about how many times more powerful my pixel phone is
I know, I agree. Like I said I really like the Core i3, i5, i7, i9 branding. I really think this change is dumb.
It makes me want to switch to AMD.
Core series should stay the same. Pentiums should be high end desktop
Their company moves can't really get anymore pathetic. Like, they can also start calling Arc series Ultimate A770 or some other shit
I have respect for AMD as a great budget option, on both the GPU and CPU front. However, the recent developments of their CPU division make me rethink that... and consider them as the "more advanced" option (this is from my perspective, I have a few reasons to cosider that. I know other's opinions will differ)
I especially see power consumption as something Intel should care about more. The 13600K and 13700K can be wild... and the 13900K is just a beast but so damn inefficient
how would a laptop 3060 scale up to a regular 2060?
Motherboard manufacturers don't help either when they enable settings that make the CPUs guzzle down power and make them difficult to cool properly, while not even getting that much better performance
Then it's just stacking bad things... but at least most of these can be turned off/modified.
Yeah, up until this Legion 5 Pro laptop I got I had never used a computer with Ryzen. It sounds like they are killing it now, though. Hopefully they can keep it up.
However, I really hope their GPU division can do the same as their CPU division and catch up with Nvidia.
Either way, I'm happy Intel is going to be in the GPU market now.
Ye. They need to work hard though. If they don't they are going to end in the nothingness of history with Arc GPUs.
I'm actually kinda made I bought this Legion 5 Pro a few months ago. I got a really good deal on it, however I'm really excited for Framework laptops with GPUs.
I even asked on the WAN show a few months if Linus knew if Framework was ever considering making laptops with GPUs, because I don't have much of a reason to buy a laptop without one. Linus gave a relatively coy answer, so I'm assuming he knew they were going to announce that soon.
Either way, I'm really excited for these new Framework laptops. I may finally get one now.
Radeon 7000 series is pretty great imo. Big improvement in software over the 6000 series. I will be buying a new GPU this gen, and seeing the Nvidia tax this gen, I am seriously considering going Radeon.
It is not that great in Blender, but I need some money for the rest of the build.
Nivida Master Race
My Lenovo legion 5 fan curve is really whacky
I doubt it. Intel makes some of the best silcon on the planet, they essentially invented this game.
Granted CPU and GPUs are different, but I have faith Intel can catch up. If anyone can, it's them.
Also, the lack of VRAM on Nvdia GPUs makes it pain in the a... for me. Like, I seriously hoped the 4070 is going to be 256bit/16GB
I have barely messed with mine yet.
@chrome vector what is your legions specs
Ryzen RX 7900XTX
Ryzen 7 6800h, 3070ti, 16gb ram DDR5, 1TB SSD.
However, I already have the ram and the NVME to replace those. Adding more storage and 32gb ram.
Yep. If they don't collapse as a company before they can catch up cough.
I see their potential more in GPUs than CPUs now. Arc is great, just the software is wacky. On the CPU side, however, AM5 will probably start killing their sales like AM4 did.
There's almost no chance of that happening, but I get what you mean.
I doubt they would drop Arc.
Depends on sales. All depends on them.
Might need to get something newer my mobile 2060 is showing its downsides in certain games now
Yeah, I'd wait until more Nvidia 4000 series and Radeon 7000 laptops come out. See the pro and cons, especially depending on how much you want to spend.
Just remember to watch Jarrod'sTech if you don't already. He's probably the best gaming laptop Youtuber...
Either way, I'm just looking forward to Framework's laptops with GPUs. Even if I didn't already have this laptop, I'm not buying one from anyone until that actually comes out.
If they are good, my next laptop is going to be Framework.
Hell, if they're good, I don't know if I would buy any laptop that isn't framework. Love what they're doing, but I just wanted a GPU.
We don't even know what company's GPUs they are going to be selling yet. We'll have to wait and see.
Yeah, but even with Intel's latest woes if anyone can eat the cost to enter the market it's them
The only tech company with more cash than intel is apple
Wait till we see Microsoft GPUs
Guys I need some help
I'm going to the boot up screen
And I'm getting in
But when i click on enter setup or that button
It leads me to load optimised defaults
And knowing Apple if they start making discrete GPUs they'll only work with not only their computers, but one specific computer.
They'll make a whole heatsink and everything, but they'll solder the PCIE slot and put half the chips on the motherboard.
And no matter what i click it doesn't change
Or accept the select command
So what should I do?
Oh no my point was intel has an insane amount of cash to handle short term losses
Apple would make a 2000mm APU die rather than a discrete card
God I would kill to see Microsoft start making their own silicon... BILL, MAKE THE GPUS, FUCK SOFTWARE
It's not so easy. Continuous failures, no sales and high costs will leave a mark on your product, then on your reviews and reputation.
ATI, a respected GPU manufacturer, after being acquired by AMD, starting to do that and ended in dust. And it started to wake up just now.
Microsoft GPU Pass
XGPU? 🤔
Xbox lmao
I am looking forward to messing with Apple silicon though. Up until recently I haven't owned an Apple product since the iPhone 4. Hadn't used a Mac since 2009.
Got a great price for a new M1 12.9 iPad Pro 2TB, and I also got a good price on a base model M1 Macbook. Just haven't messed with them much yet.
These might be the only Apple products I use for the next decade, so... We'll see.
How about an Xbox that you plug into a PC to make your Games play more games
Guys I need some help I'm going to the boot up screen
And I'm getting in But when i click on enter setup or that button It leads me to load optimised defaults And no matter what i click it doesn't change Or accept the select command So what should I do?.................
is there a rich person in here?
Unironically, I really fucking wish AMD and Intel would make console level APUs for PC.
I get the limitations, and some of the reasons they haven't done it... BUT I WANT IT
Linus is always here... Always watching. Ready to drop some top shelf technical tips
Hmm
Linus "dropping Tips" is the most accurate thing ever
Don't post in multiple channels at once
thanks but not for that. Only if there was someone who can fund me atleast a 100 bucks. i am making a server and plan to do some crazy stuff. however one thing that bothers me a lot are the profile pics of the bots. most bots i am developing on my own. atleast trying to but i have really integrated mee6 into my server and if i want to remove the pfp. i must pay premium
What is the manufacturers wattages for that laptop gpu?
according to passmark 3060 laptop would be a little worse
We can't help you without wattage
If you're old enough you could possibly sign up for paypal credit. Over $100 purchases/money transfers you have no interest if you pay it back in 6 months.
I've been using it lately, it's nice.
I am still 17. Will definetly do that tho, once i turn 18
i thought of freelancing but again i can't get paypal
You can even make a second paypal account, use paypal credit to transfer money to your second account and on to your debit card if whatever you're buying doesn't accept paypal. I did that once.
I made a paypal credit account when I was 17
doesn't paypal require the user to be 18 first?
I used my mom's info

next level borrowing of the credit card
Just don't mess up your credit score. Mine is back to normal now, but I had a bad set of circumstances happen with my first credit card and lost my job.
Credit cards can be great if you use them correctly, just make sure you make at least the minimum payment
I don't have access to my parent's accounts
Why not just use a prepaid cc from her directly?
how much is your credit score?
Well I don't think she knew about it iirc
Casually admits to credit fraud in a social app
That's a big yikes.
well well
Well now hol up
There are quite a few places that check for prepaid like azure or aws
I mean, nothing is going to happen realistically, but do be aware that lying about your age on Steam is very different than lying about your age to Equifax or the IRS
I couldn't get my Grab working with azure and i had to use my real cc
Like 680-700. Basically normal. Now I'm going to build my credit back up, never making that mistake again. It won't take too long for me to build it up now.
Paypal Credit used to work a lot differently back before they were a "legit bank"
It was more like their pay in four where it didn't require a credit check and etc
My dad has somewhere around the region of 800 ig. could be less, could be more.
Yeah they still have pay in four, but it might check your credit now. I literally just paid of a pay in four, along with my paypal credit.
Also, just because it needs to be said, don't spend money that you don't have...if you don't have the amount in your checking account, do not put that amount on a credit card, PayPal credit, etc.
Yeah exactly, they had less checks super early on
250
srry i was lookin it up
So, what do you guys say? Lets suppose i start freelancing, which service should i offer?
Yeah. You're young (younger than me at least). Seriously, don't mess up your credit, whatever you're buying isn't worth messing it up if you can't pay it back. I just use my credit cards to buy stuff I can pay back.
but that is w a ryzen 7
that'd be great
Honestly don't know. Never built a server, let alone a NAS yet.
Tbh we never use our credit cards, dad always has the money to buy stuff
The laptop gpu, not the entire laptop
how would i go about seein that
Agreed. I'm doing a lot better with my finances now that I don't get money taken out for my 401k anymore. Looking to be completely debt free around July or so.
Very nice! Going to start investing for retirement after that?
voice messages is the biggest w of discord history
my voice message rizz boutta go crazy
hey dude, you sound like a rich guy. Wanna fund me a 100 bucks? for Mee6 premium?
It needs to be specified by the oem or have undergone through testing, but 250w seems pretty good
Yeah, my 401k is essentially "disabled" since I switched companies but I still work under the same roof. I had 13.4% going into it before so now that plus a little extra is going into savings. I have a seedfi loan which has 2.5k locked away so once I pay off the remaining amount I'll get that back, and that should roll over to my other debts.
rich and debt free can be associated with eachother but not interchanged
What is mee6 premium even for? I don't do discord
I have a net worth of $5, but at least it's positive
Does it not still go up and down with the market though?
You could include your tech/everything else you own
Like it'll unlock a lot of useful plugins for your server.
Your SWTOR account is also worth something
net worth: what do they do with my body when i die? 💀
Give it to other people
Is it a discord server? I thought you meant a computer server lol
oh god
Yeah I'm pretty sure the way 401Ks work is they're essentially investment accounts that keep on investing even after you ||lose them from gettin fired yo or|| stop putting money into them.
You could do what my grandpa did. He requested to be cremated and have his ashes shot out of a pumpkin cannon.
We honored it, and not going to lie, it was a great time
My country is opt-out by default
Nah my PC is a liability, it would only hurt.
If you opt out, you get lower priority for organ transplant waiting lists
SWTOR account is a liability too since I'm paying for that 180 day premium
that is pretty awesome
oof
Absolutely not. I mean i wanna make my computer server and build a pc someday, but even if i can do it now. I don't want to spend my parent's money.
Yeah, that's how they work in the US, at least. Once you're debt free though, you could look into IRAs, generally you want to invest around 15-25% of your income so that in retirement, you're all set
I can't believe Nikcado Avocado is losing weight.
NATURE IS HEALING
im bout to nut a bust and go sleep gn friends
How much would you say is like average retirement fund in the us? sorry, i don't know properly
Generally, yeah, but I feel a lot of uncertainty for the future and I've been thinking I might invest into something more tangible.
Average? Very bad. Most people don't save. People in their 30s and 40s only have about 130k saved for retirement
When it comes to retirement, you want to be WELL above average
Hmm, I do get you now
Especially because it compounds. If you manage to save a million bucks and the market goes up 9%, you just made 90,000 by doing nothing
Yk i told my dad about that, but he's more into real estate
Real estate is a far better investment, if you can afford it, because there are no real regulations surrounding it
Hence, the housing crisis in the US and Canada and Europe and China and Russia and..........
In the nearest city to me, there are people who can buy a house, with cash, one house every single month with the rent they collect from all the houses they already own
here in India, if we talk in regards to US dollars. My dad's first property that he bought was in 2001 and that too for about 1500 bucks. yes, that's how cheap it was. I believe the price of the property is more than 300k now
See, that seems like a better first investment imo
If you can pull it off, yeah. It's just a lot more work, and a lot more risk, because to get started, you have to go into debt
I don't care to add extra work to my life or stress, so I just stick with a Roth 401k, a Roth IRA, and a mutual fund
Yeah for sure, but it's a different kind of debt that you can leverage (for more debt)
Yes, which is why it's not exclusively bad debt like CC debt
It's like student loan debt as well. You accept risk for the potential of a higher payout in the end
But see what happened with ChatGPT? Many software dev students I know are dropping out after this year to go get their electrician apprenticeship
They took out debt, and it won't pay off to the same level that they thought it would
Trades are awesome
Take it from a tradesman 🙂
I've been told that it's better if I first form an LLC holding company, then an investment LLC, then a VC LLC, then my main LLC, then an LLC for each of my products/businesses. Then under the investment LLC I create an operating company, which owns a real estate company and a leasing company, as well as another VC company.
Yup, and they make a fortune too, especially with how few people are willing to perform them anymore
Well for me tho, degree is just something i'd like to get. After that I wanna build my own startup
Plumbers in the town nearest me charge $175 an hour, and that's the guy that's booked out two months.
If you want a plumber tomorrow, that's $300/hr
Then under the main LLC I create a second holding company, a real estate company, and a leasing company in that respective hierarchy, which then lease out to the other companies.
Startup is a bit harder than a degree. Takes a certain work ethic, but if you have it, it's very rewarding
(Disclaimer: I am saying I condone or support this I am just speculating the future)
Between all the economic factors from minimum wage, to current inflation, general inflation out pacing minmum wage for decades and decades, lack of social programs/safety nets, healthcare, politicians just generally not doing anything, retirment crisis, and politicians just generally letting corporations fuck American in every way possible..... There's going to be chaos in the upcoming decades if nothing changes. Polticians are going to be targetted at some point if they don't do something.
It's a very competitive industry right now
And what I mean by that is that companies are competing to get employees. Everyone's short one way or another.
That's awesome, we need more electrician's than programmers (I am a programmer). I can't wait to be able to rule as a pro with my custom BabyAGI instance.
I won't lie, in the US, it's really tough, but in India, it's really not that tough to become highly profitable
That makes sense, there's probably not as many regulations on small businesses over there.
Over here, you get absolutely wrecked, especially if you live in California, Washington, or Florida
You have to pay a fortune even just to get set up as a business with all the right licenses, forms, etc.
I still want to learn how to code
Learn how to "flowchart" code, and then learn how to integrate that with ChatGPT. You'll become a superhero
Practice makes perfect, I recommend you give it a shot just trying to solve a specific task, or do like codeacademy
It's crazy how Stargate SG1 is far superior to both all Star Wars media & Star Trek combined.
YES
I'm going to have to look that up. Heard the term, but I am literally a 0 experience
And Firefly?...
ded
If only firefly went on as long as SG1
Flowcharting is just the process of creating a "logic map" that shows what the code should do. It's the spot that ALL programmers should start out with. ChatGPT just makes it easier now.
I wish firefly got resurrected
Gotta buy a lot of screwdrivers for that
Sort of like how COBOL worked lol
What?
@wispy marsh @chrome vector thanks for the info homies
Linus has joked about how once he gets TRUE "f you" money, he would buy Firefly and revive it
I’m off to take my ap test. Wish me luck.
ohhhh lol
Drink water
Consume proteins and vitamins
I mean cause the govt. wants Indian companies to prosper more, they have been setting up schemes and a general propaganda by the ruling party. The party that is the governing body at the moment here in India, has established such a feeling with their die-hard fans, that every time a common citizen hears the sentence, "Made in India". They'll throw out the product that they are using regardless of how good it was and how bad this indian product might be.
What programming language should I actually learn first though?
Programming seems like the most stupidly difficult things to learn. Not because it's the hardest thing to do, but you need to learn it in stupid roundabout ways.
It's obtuse is what I'm trying to say
Learn web development stuff first. Javascript + HTML + CSS.
Go to the Odin Project online, and complete it. It's extremely comprehensive, and it's open source.
hmm....makes sense
Depends on what you want to get into. Game development with Unity? C#. Game development with Unreal? C++. Machine Learning? Python. Finance? It depends. Web apps? Javascript/Python.
You could also learn C++, but that's becoming less useful as more and more programs are just web based only
Screenshotting this, never heard of Odin project
Learning HTML/CSS is important too.
I have started the CS50 course from harvard university, let's see how it goes
Also, join their Discord. There are programmers of all levels there that help people
And they're pretty good about booting toxic people, since the programming community is primarily made up of complete jerkholes
I'll try that. And yeah, fuck Stack overflow
Do all of the "intro" stuff as well, even though it might seem goofy...it's actually going to be super important once you get halfway in
I've also not heard of the Odin project. I learned how to code on an old desktop running FreeBSD (cli only) connected to an (illegal) usb wifi tether on a cheap pay as you go phone.
That's the problem... I just want to learn how to code, I don't know what I want to do yet.
BACK IN MY DAY I had to climb 3000 stairs just to write a line of code
I'm unironically really jealous of people who grew up in the early days of PCs, where you had to learn to code to use the damn thing
The language you learn is irrelevant, as they all function the same way, just with different names for stuff.
The reason why I recommend the Odin Project is because
A. Javascript, HTML, and CSS are the most widely used ones at the moment, because webdev is EVERYTHING to the mobile world.
B. The resource itself is really well made, and will train you to think in the way you need to in order to learn ANY language.
If you learn Javascript, popping out C# for Unity would be easy (but kind of pointless, given the power of Unreal 5...), doing machine learning stuff with python would be simple
I am going to start there then. I knew the tiniest bit of CSS from Reddit, but yeah I'm going to start using that or I probably never will.
How hard is it to learn new coding languages after you learn one like Javascript, HTML, CSS?
I mean everything I did was out of an oddly frantic desire to learn it when I was young, not because that's what was required of me.
Think of it in terms of speech. It's much easier to convey that "Bano" in Spanish means bathroom when you already have an English word for bathroom. Getting somebody to understand what a bathroom is when they have no word for it is much harder.
Learn one, then the others are easy.
Well first thing's first, HTML and CSS aren't programming languages. Programming languages describe the logic that data goes through to get from Y to Z. HTML and CSS just describe some of the data for browsers (hierarchy and style, respectively)
Especially hard if you read it as bano instead of baño
I don't have that button on my keyboard
Okay, I knew HTML wasn't
Then do what I did and google "n with tilde" and copy it lol
Definitely don't care enough to do that
Hence why Javascript is the one you're after, and why the Odin Project is the best way to learn it. It'll teach you how to reference HTML and CSS as libraries, which is extremely common in all coding languages
Okay, makes sense. I'm going to start that, because I really do want to learn how to code. And of course, Google being the stupid company it is, they are shutting down Grasshopper
Grasshopper was literally worthless anyways. It makes you think you're learning, but you aren't.
Really? I only used it a tiny bit
Oh gotcha. As far as the actual programming goes, JavaScript. If you're able to understand the fundamentals, then most languages get easier since they normally follow a basic structure. Most languages are based on either C/C++, including JavaScript, so a lot of the skills are transferrable. Every language has tools that help learn that language, as well, so it's mostly about learning the fundamentals.
Going through Grasshopper was like completing sidequests in an MMO. It plays fun music when you're done to make you feel good about yourself, but nothing actually happened.
Sounds like a good time for a programmer that needs a pick me up
Oh yeah, I think I remember hearing that. About them being based on it. Isn't C the one that isn't used that much anymore? C++ is supposed to be the really useful but complicated one IIRC. I don't remember what C# is though.
Hopefully I'm able to get this down. While I don't know if I would ever get a job as a programmer if I got good enough, I would still like to know how to do it. Might go to school for computer science soon, idk yet.
So it's basically like some of those language apps that many people use for months and months and still can barely speak the language?
C# is closer to Java (which is different from JavaScript) and IIRC it was created with the same style as Java by Microsoft to compete with Oracle or some shit
C and C++ are still widely used, but since they are lower level they are more difficult in general.
Exactly.
To answer your other question, C# is the easier version of C++. I would also wait to check out a CS school until after the AI stuff has settled down, otherwise they won't have integrated it into their curriculum
Does lower level mean you have more control over the system or something? Or can do more?
More efficient, effectively
Yeah that's a fair point. I still need to get basic classes out of the way first anyways. So I'll have time.
Correct, the higher the level the higher the abstraction from hardware. Python/JavaScript are pretty high level languages.
But isn't Javascript supposed to be one of the easier ones to learn? I know a lot of people say start there anyways, obviously including you guys
Or can do more?
Actually I'd argue you can do more faster with higher level languages since you can focus more on general logic, but you can do more to make your code efficient with lower level hardware.
Yes because it's high level (as in high level of abstraction from hardware, making it easy to understand). To put in in perspective, assembly is like the lowest level you can go as a human.
Unless you start handwriting code using electrons
Oh! I get what you're saying now, I had it reversed
High Level = Easier to program with and understand.
Low Level = Harder to program with, but programs run faster
Yep! So you can imagine when you're dealing with very low level programming you can really make it efficient, and when you're dealing with higher level programming you're essentially building off of whatever other people put there (as efficient/inefficient as it is) but that makes it possible for you to do way more with data and etc.
Wouldn't the lowest level of programming just be binary or something then?
As for which language to learn, it really comes down to:
If you want to do anything with data, machine learning, or science, learn Python.
If you want to create webapps, learn JavaScript.
It's important to note that you can still create any of either of those with each one, but the communities usually shift to one or the other.
Well, it's really tough to code a binary file, once it's been compiled it can get really complicated (basically reverse engineering, which can be done though). Writing in assembly is often converted into hex/binary which you can view as well, so it kinda goes hand in hand.
It's sorta like... The lowest level anybody would want to go to without going into "for clout only" territory
Yeah I kinda figured nobody actually does that on a software level, I was just wondering because isn't binary the "machine language"?
And for like 90% of programmers that lowest level is C++ XD
Yeah
To be fair, C++ is screaming efficient compared to Python and a lot of the other ones
I've been learning Rust
For the WASM
But I initially learned C++ way back, although I've been a JavaScript dev for a long time since
Yeah it makes sense, at a certain point you'd basically just want to be hardcoding it into the hardware. (I can't think of a term) At that point you're either showing off or doing something very specific.
I started with C, then C++, then C#, then I got into webdev stuff for a bit, but now, I just use Unreal's blueprinting system
I've had to use C++ maybe....twice in Unreal? The built in blueprints cover nearly everything
Are you making game stuff or something?
I was wondering how far the blueprints went lol, I have been looking at Unreal as well, I've got some ideas.
I'm a tech lead for a game dev outsourcing company, so when companies don't want to or don't know how to make certain assets for their games or certain programming things, they send it to us
Work on anything we'd know (without breaking NDAs?)?
Yup, it's a good one to learn. Before UE5 came out, we were getting requests for about 60% Unreal and 40% Unity. Now we've had 1 Unity request in the last year compared to nearly 300 Unreal requests
Not counting proprietary engines and stuff
Can't compete with them graphics lol
I mean yeah, we did some stuff for 343, Gearbox, 2k, tons of devs you'd know...we just do so many small things for them that it isn't super relevant
Oh okay, that's really cool. So do you have crunch like game devs have at big studios? I have heard the horror stories... Just the stories alone takes out the seeming mystic and fun of being a game dev... Most jobs you have to actually do it to get disillusioned
I've had an idea for a specific arcadey game for a long time I'm looking to implement with it, as an initial project to learn Unreal.
No. That's specifically why I stopped working at a game dev studio. We're basically advanced freelancers, so if we have too much work, we just say no.
That, and the gaming community was so far beyond any levels of stupidity I had ever seen...having the "main dev" company and the publisher as a barrier between us is really nice.
When a community flips out because the laser rifle is two inches longer than it should be, we just say "they told us to make it that long..."
But yeah, crunch is terrible, and kind of pointless.
I will say, from my old coworkers who are still working at specific companies, the ones who use UE5 don't have crunch anymore because it removed about 60% of the work.
Sounds annoying. Also reminds me of the movie The Menu
Thankfully, it removed 60% of the work, but only about 10% of the jobs
Float like a caddilac, sting like a beetle am I right
That's the one about the food, right? Where he goes nuts and kills a bunch of them?
Yeah sort of, but the message of the movie is about striving for "perfection" and the insanity that that brings as well as the self loathing and etc. when no matter what you do, you can never achieve perfection.
Or, one of the messages of the movie at least, there's a couple in there.
Yeah, I could see some of my ex-coworkers struggling with that
Yeah I can understand that. Game community can be really, really dumb.
Noodle on YT made a really good video about crunch culture and why it's bad, and then he made a second video responding to comments people made on the first one. Some idiots (hopefully kids who have never worked a day in their life) were actually supporting crunch culture, and basically saying that, "tHe gAmE wOn't Be gOoD wItHoUt cRunCh"
Which, I don't have to tell you is a phenomenally stupid take.
Half the reasons games come out unfinished nowadays is because of publishers, not studios.

I wish I had instead mentioned a company besides Nintendo at the end. Their track record isn't great... for god's sake, Sakurai hooked himself up to an IV machine to keep working on smash. W...
It's 50% the publishers' fault, 50% the community's fault.
Cyberpunk devs were literally getting death threats when the game was delayed.
The best games have time to be built.
At their personal home addresses and such.
Who sends death threats over a game
Like I said. Least intelligent community I've ever seen.
Also, the fact that the community now measures videogames by $$$/hours of playable content utterly destroyed the industry
You know what, I know a guy that works with my little brother at a local used games shop and I do believe he would be capable of that calibre of stupid.
But 20 years ago, people weren't playing 18 hours of videogames a day
Yeah IIRC he also brought that up, I definitely agree. Some people are fucking insane.
I will say that it sucks that it takes such a long time to develop games nowadays with their ever increasing scope in all things from graphics, to acting, to activities, etc. But, you know, I'd rather the people making the games actually be treated like human beings that have a fucking life, not monkeys chained to a typewriter
Much less death threats from the community
It takes less time to make a game now actually, the community is just far more demanding.
Retopology is no longer necessary because of Nanite. Baking lighting is no longer necessary because of Lumen. Asset creation is much faster now that 3DS Max has a huge library of plugins supported
do yall think usb c will be mostly standard by 2030?
Probably
Some of the best games are the older ones, they just lack the graphics capabilities of new ones. Think I was playing Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy which is like a 2008 game or something and it was a blast.
like used for chargers for everything, displays, etc
Ocarina of Time took 2.5 years to develop. Witcher 3 took 3.5 years, and included voice acting, a functional world that was based off of quests and other things that all linked together, plus the graphics difference is...obvious
i guess then there would be different tiers of usb c cables, the more expensive ones will be better in all fields
But again, you have to waste more time making a game when players demand that it has 200+ hours of open world filler quests
usbc charger charging a tesla lol
Because otherwise, you release a good game that lasts 30 hours, they beat it in two days, and start threatening to kill your children because your game was too short.
Really? I get there are more tools now.. But I figured it'd still be harder, I mean when Red Dead 2 came out the graphics were fucking insane, even on last gen consoles.
I can definitely see the community being more demanding, though.
I know somethings have increased though, like with how many games have a huge cast of voice actors, motion capture, etc
I think so, but honestly the fact that USB C has so many different variants already makes me think it won't last as the standard (e.g. some can charge only vs some have data only, some can plug into displays, some can't, etc)
I only hope they get rid of this lack of functionality and finally decide on a true singular standard (still based on a symmetrical shape/ideally the same one, though)
If you haven't already, watch both of the Unreal 5.2 demos, for Meta Animation and the "Tech Demo Presentation." Making Red Dead 2 will take months now, not years.
They're both about 5 minutes long
God, yeah that's stupid. I like big games, I also like smaller games.
I would take a single game with the detail of Fallout 1/2/New Vegas over a hundred Fallout 4s with 50 billion radiant quests.
That's why the procedural games the indie devs make are pretty cool, and hopefully that + GPT-based NPCs will help create very unique experiences. Some of the GPT models are even being shrunk down to the point they can run on local machines or edge hardware, so I see it being very probably that within the next few years we'll see it possible to run an AI NPC engine locally.
Currently, though, we'll have to pay a membership fee for the GPT-4 based NPCs, but it's coming.
i mean there are already multi purpose ones, so i could see in the future them making a well rounded standard one that is set into a set of levels, each level with it being able to do everything bu tto a higher standard (like level 1 can do 20w charging, transfer data at 10mbps, and display only 1080p 120hz, while idk the highest level one can do 500w charging, display 8k 120hz, and transfer data at gbs per second)
I'll definitely watch those in a bit, they seem interesting.
Yup, I think you're correct. Though I have a hard time defending low quality pixel art...I guess it depends on the honesty of the dev
I could see something like Hades being completed in literal weeks with AI powered tools.
Yeah, like Shadows of Doubt has some terrible art imo BUT it's a fantastic concept. I think with tools like metahuman you'll be able to procedurally generate NPCs that aren't shitty pixel art lmao
I guess tiers is okay, like cat5/6/7/etc. Personally I'd prefer if there was just one
@stoic beacon Real question though, with the job you're working now, are you getting paid more, less, or about the same than when you worked at regular dev studios?
Not looking for figures, just want to know how it compares to when you worked at a regular studio.
Yeah uploaded there
Hydrating
I get paid more per hour, but less per year. Depends on how many projects we take on
Regular studio = 10-12 hour days, whereas now, it's 4-6 hour days
Granted, those 4-6 hours are extremely intense, but still
I'm guessing you could also choose to extend it if you wanted as well?
Okay, that makes sense. Definitely worth it to actually keep your sanity though, at least I think so.
You can only work so many long hours before you get burned out.
Shorter intense work is still better than long term intense work though
Yup. When Halo Infinite was coming out, we actually did extend quite a bit, partly because 343 was paying...well lol
that's pretty neat
So are you basically one of those studios that would do stuff like work on a remaster or something? You know how companies like Rockstar outsourced the actual job or 'remastering' the game to whatever studio it was. Would you guys do anything like that, or is it more specific work?
More specific than that, because we don't want any responsibility for the art direction, gameplay direction, any of that. They basically say "Well, we thought we could finish this in time, but we can't, can you make these 2,000 models for us?" And then we do
Okay, that's pretty cool, I kinda thought so from what you said earlier.
Hey, at least if the game coming out turns out to be shit you get none of the blame
That's the goal...
Do you have any favorites that you worked on, or what's your favorite type of work?
Also since you're (technically) freelance do you accept work from non-AAA devs?
Or even if the game turns out fine. Halo Infinite was hilarious, because the gameplay was really good, but people were mad that the cosmetics weren't free, in a free to play game. And the devs were just going... "Where are we supposed to get paid from then if the game and everything in it is entirely free?"
what do you work as?
Duh it's supposed to be a free game
@glass vapor
Favorites have been Infinite, and then three games that haven't been released yet, simply because the UE5 workflow is just so dang fun.
We occasionally do indie style stuff, but not often, because the AAA publishers pay a lot more
Don't you realize? Game devs are our dancing monkey slaves. Everything need to be 100% free.
Reminds me of people who get mad at Youtubers over not uploading or doing something different... I'm so sorry the completely free content isn't up to your standards. (Double hilarious if they use ad block)
I use ad block but I also have YT premium
Same though. I'm not shitting on people using adblock, just people that show no support for their favorite creators but then also feel entitlement over them
I look forward to learning more of UE5, it does seem like a very enjoyable process (if you're working on something you like)
Little man in the shiny box is my slave
@stoic beacon could i ask you some questions about gamedev? im entering my senior year o fhigh school
Yeah, go for it
should i focus more on my portfolio for getting a job, or go to college first and get a degree?
One other question. Since you're doing more specific work on games like making models and what not. Do you have to code much at your job?
I'm not the most knowledgeable about hardcore game development. I just know in a lot of programs it's more drag and drop art than coding (at least for what I'm specifically thinking of)
Both are necessary, though it depends on where you're planning on going to school. The degree won't help you, but the portfolio you make while earning it will
i can work on portfolio while in college but not as much, want to maek vr games
Since we're primarily in UE5 at this point, we just use blueprinting
WGU, i can do some classes senior and then apply right after i graduate, so hopefully i could graduate college within a year of graduating high school
Okay, I'm going to look into that later, now I'm interested.
I remember awhile ago I downloaded unreal engine 5 (I wasn't expecting to actually do anything with it) and I thought it was really cool, but definitely way over my head.
since i dont necessarily need a job, just nice to have money to work with
Also, make sure you learn both UE5 and 3DS Max. Those are the industry standard by a long shot, so make your portfolio using those, along with Substance Painter and Quixel Megascans
There's a guy named Arrimus, he has the best 3DS Max tutorials, but I think they're paid now
Recommendation on UE5 learning materials? Books/Tutorials || Paid/Free?
Damn I can't use Blender?
i was thinking freecode camp is decent
Lol, if you're freelancing, then maybe...but it's a lot slower than Max and Maya are
for ue5, 12 hours though
how much does 3ds max cost?
Honestly, just reading their documentation. It's so well laid out, and it's far better than any YouTube tutorial I've found
It's free until you want to start selling the things you make in it, it says it needs a student email, but it doesn't
ah
Fair, I used to know a lot more about Maya but it was back in like 2014 lol. The only actual game dev I did was with YoYo Games Gamemaker before they rebranded (probably 2009-2012?)
("actual" here meaning "any at all")
is unity fine to learn as well, if i want to focus on VR
You can learn Unity, but unless they have some magic ace up their sleeve, Unreal just sent them into obsolescence with UE5
Not really worth your time, because then you have to learn C# too...most people want UE5 devs because then they don't need programmers, they don't need as many artists, and they don't need as much optimization
damn, i feel there's less vr oriented tutorials for ue5 though
couldn't find one on youtube at least
VR is a small industry, and you don't want to rely on tutorials for learning UE5. You want to read their documentation, like a book.
Learning UE5 for VR is not different than learning it for regular gamedev stuff. The difference between a VR game and a non-VR game in development is major, but at the same time, only requires a few changes in the actual process.
The harder part of developing VR games is thinking "How is this going to work in VR?..."
I'll keep this in mind, although I did end up downloading a book on UE5 lol
Okay, but on a scale from 1-10 how would you rate? Am I true game dev?
I still own a copy of this, no idea where it came from. I want to mess with it sometime.
Yes...I'm not kidding, read it like a book, and practice along with what it says
alr, thanks for the help
That looks like the type of thing you'd see in Half Price Books on display next to the off-brand PC games
i'll get started once i get home, since my laptop definitely can't run ue5
plus i forgot my mouse and the trackpad is broken
Protip #2, don't do gamedev with a trackpad.
My mouse of choice is the Logitech MX Master 3
Yeah I think my brother owned it or something. It has cool robots and racing and other stuff you can "make" on the back.
Want to try it sometime just for fun
Nice, I used that one for a while...swapped over to the MX Vertical when I felt my carpal tunnel coming back
I've been feeling it too 😢 I'm too young
Vertical mouse + standing desk was a game changer for carpal tunnel
I do have a standing desk though
Does the MX Vertical still have the infinite scrolling?
No, unfortunately
Would be hard to implement that with it sitting sideways I imagine
Dang, that's like 85% of the reason I got it XD
I gotta be able to scroll to the bottom of documentation or my monolithic ass code
Master 3 is ergonomic enough that it should cause too many issues, so long as you take breaks and stretch
Did you know how to code before you became a game dev? Did you make anything game related before you started the job? Like do you make mods for games or anything, or did you before?
I don't know if you even play games or anything now or not
Yes, please send your autobiography.
wait a mouse like this? are they any good?
It looks so weird XD
No, I was a carpenter, then an accountant, then a game dev (though I still do accounting stuff on the side)
It looked like fun, so I downloaded 3DS Max and started messing around with it
That one? Probably not. MX Vertical is the only one I've found that actually fits the hand right and isn't garbage build quality
Hence, when you see me going off about finances or game dev stuff...now you know
Ah so tell me, what do you think about the profit potential of my investment in the Cardano cryptocurrency, when it was at $1.97
Sorry, I was just wondering because I know a lot of people who become game devs want to do it young, go to college, and then end up doing it, some stay some end up doing something else after.
I have high hopes now that it's finally dropped further to $0.38
The reason why a lot of them end up doing something after is because they tried to become game devs because they enjoyed playing videogames.
Enjoying playing games and making them are two different things, and making them requires a lot of work...I had well over 17,000 hours logged into 3DS Max before I got my first real position using it
Looks like a decent mouse, might try one sometime. I've heard it's a more natural resting position.
What do you think of trackball mice that were really popular in the 2000's? They have some at my work and I actually forgot that I still like them... Just not for gaming.
Not a fan, not precise enough for the big user interfaces I use
jesus 3ds max is expensive
it's an investment

Trackballs are great for htpc/living room setups. I should get one. Better then always finding a space to use a lasermouse.
Yup. Like I said though, free to use until you start selling stuff from it
Do not do that. If you sell something without the special metadata that they put in the paid version, Autodesk will absolutely destroy you.
That's what I was (poorly) trying to get at, but it sounds like you got into it later than a lot of people. Really cool though either way, especially if you enjoy where you're working at now compared to a regular studio.
That's what I was saying earlier about crunch. I think every kid that really like video games ends up saying they want to be a game developer at one point or another.
I am not exceptional to that, but hearing about how bad crunch is, and as you brought up the culture around it (like with gaming community)... It's definitely disillusioned it.
If the trial works like that then I'm down, $235 sounds steep but I'm sure if I get to the point where I'm actually selling something I can justify it lol
Oh, no, I agree. I was just saying that for if he wanted to try it. It's like Adobe. A lot of people sail the high seas for it to try it out, and generally Adobe doesn't care..... Until you start going professional
No, my nephew used his personal email
Hype
Sorry one last question and I swear I'm done
So are you self-taught then? Or did you go to school at all to do game dev work? Sorry
I took a few classes, but mostly self taught
Okay, that's cool. I know that plenty of professional coders are self-taught, didn't realize it can be like that for game devs. Either way, thanks for the information about coding/odin project, going to start that!
🤔 how much will cheap uphere fans affect temps with my 240mm aio on my r5 1600af?
Cheap fans aren't a big deal, people make a bigger deal out of fans than warranted.
However, you want ones maximized for static pressure.
More static pressure = More air being pushed through the radiator
🤷♂️ i bet they suck at static pressure, however even an 120mm aio was more than capable for my cpu
you can get good fans for cheap if youre okay with them not having rgb
so i guess even if that static pressure sucks its prob enough hopefully
its was openbox 5 rgb fans
for 20bucks 30bucks unopend box xD
how can an gpu not be compatible?
is it that old?
or do you use your cpu as graphicsscard?
If it's these ones they have decent static pressure
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07VV338MH its theese ones
i mean for like 15years or more all gpus use the same port
Yup, same ones, they should be fine
like i think mid 2000 i think they changed
i got the non rgb ones tho
since i dont have an 5v rgb header anyways i dont care bout that tho xD
they have the same static pressure
i only got that useless not rainbowpuke but static color 12v header
fuck you msi for giving an mystic lights logo on the box of my mobo if its only the useless one
A lot of the cheap fan brands on Amazon are way better than people give them credit for. They're fans afterall, it's not exactly rocket science.
Usually they won't be the quietest, but they're more than passable. Longevity can be called into question, but that can go for the bigger companies too.
It just depends.
🤔 for the furture i was thinking of getting some mars gaming argb fans
12bucks a piece however they have pink housing
but i will get argb fans when i got better mobo cpu and case
fuck cable managing 5 rgb fans in my case is gonna be a fucking nightmare i already needa sit on the back panel to close it basicly
Yeah I definitely get what you mean, that's what I'm having to do with right now.
Luckily I have options, I have multiple ARGB/fan splitters I want to use them, plus my case came with a controller already on the case, and technically my fans came with them too. I am figuring out tonight how I'm going to do it. My MOBO should have enough things for most, if not all my fans, but I'm going to daisy chain some of them anyways.
I prefer ASRock
ASUS makes good motherboards as well
my next motherboard is gonnta be that whitish asus rog strix b550 board
msi sucks kinda
My last one was a gigabyte
Nightmare
if your product can only have one colored rgb say it on the fucking box and stop installing stupid norton everytime i wanna update my bios
rgb is mid anyway
I prefer ultraviolet LEDs
I use UV lights so I can get vitamin D
jk but I'm realizing now that that's actually a good idea
Now my windowless cave can give me sunburns
or skin cancer
tools of the trade
Man speaking of UV, it does look cool but would never use UV coolant personally because well.....
This used to be UV green
But that's not under the UV light right? What does it look like under the UV light now?
This is what it looked like before
interesting
water bis
thats cool, sucks that it browns overtime
it's a good indicator that your pc has evolved into a potato
ooh and with the pattern on the memory, yeah that is definitely a solid build
i really just need to theme my build again tbh. my pc is crazy but its got a "millenial gray" vibe to it
i like rgb so much i even brought 4x8gb sticks of ram so it looks better as having 2x16sticks
I wonder if they make cosmetic only ram sticks
Screams linus
they do but not for the model i got
aww
i choose the corsair vengeance rgb rt in white but they only sell em for the vengeance rgb pro's
the pros would have looked bad since the rt's got 10 leds instead of 6 i think the pros combined with another form in general
sometimes in the dead of night when I wake up and the RGBs are just going in their rainbow circle I feel as though I've got a side quest that needs to be completed by activating that item
makes life magical
🤔 welp if you set your pc in sleep mode and use icue ram u needa set the hardware settings for it to 0%brightness or it will be on on sleep mode
Oh, no I have it set there on purpose
There's a button for changing the LEDs
I didn't splurge on RGB RAM
Yeah haha... I now use just distilled water with Mayhems Inhibitor+ and Hades+ additives for my loops. Especially maintenance wise as coloured coolant is a pain to work with since it leaves gunk in the blocks and just an overall PITA to clean
Actually got downgraded to a single stick of 16gb (ddr5 tho)
That or clear premix coolant
Windows 11 is a good OS right?
yeah sure
Looks terrible visually tho
preference
preference
Still preference
Should I upgrade my computer to Windows 11 even though it's not officially supported? i7-6700 here. Getting mixed reports online about stability and such.
Would be a shame if that leaked
I wouldn't
Widows 10 works fine and is still getting updated, so u can choose, but you should definitely jump ship once it stops getting upgraded
As will I
or go w10 ltsc
which is what ill probably do
I would advise against LTSC because it sometime lacks features and compatibility
ok, but, W10 :)
other windows :(
Supported until 2025 swap then
No new feature updates from now on tho so like
Nothing new
But security updates till 2025
I tried LTSC for a while then got sick of the issues and workarounds to use stuff with it so switched to W10 Enterprise
like what
I don't recall but it was enough to make me switch
Enterprise with most updates and tracking disabled works great
or i just will survive without security updates tbh
That's not advisable
much easier though
It's nice that Ubuntu allows you to register 5 installs for free for their security updates
ill prob use mint
Do gaming moniters come with good hdmi cables? Or do they cheap out o bc it
Kubuntu is my go-to
I just like kde
on it*
I use Kubuntu on my laptop and have it themed to look like macOS
Why not just install elementary at that point
any cable that supports the res is fine
I've been using Pop OS as my daily and it's been fine for my uses
Because I'm not configuring my system again when I need it for class
Fair
Got this in the mail a while ago
Had to sign up online
Younger me defaced it a bit
i have a personal vendetta against pop os
How reliable is contact exporting on android?
they're getting exported to a file which I'll transfer on my PC.
No idea, I usually just.. let google sync it
google root of all evil
Why are you using Android then
because
I like Google
Just did some thinking. If I remember correctly, LTSC is basically almost at the same version as Windows Server 2019 and therefore lacks WSL and a bunch of other stuff that is very useful
Google has my vote for global corporation-government hybrid but I don't think it'll happen since they've been falling off a bit
why cant windows see a .vcf file..
What's a vcf file?
contact file
Windows is no phone!
it has every single contact. It should be used for backups and shit
I dont care its not a phone, why doesnt it acknowledge its existence at all. It shows the folder as empty.
that still doesnt explain why it doesnt show up at all.
eh, they're too complacent
Are you sure it exists?
Shouldnt be. Though I have hidden files enabled. And yes, it's visible on the phone
google has the monopoly issue where there's just no fire anymore
Yeah I'm thinking Apple has a higher chance of getting there currently
it's like adobe
is their product good?
ehhhh
does it matter if their product is good?
not really
I think apple is too focused on consumer products to really be a government
do you ever feel like your brain is a hamster in a wheel running very hard just for the sake of running very hard but also on the edge of losing control and flying the fuck out of the wheel at 12 times the speed of sound?
Tencent?
nah, the CCP would never let a tech company challenge them
sorta
excellent
What's the American equivalent of Tencent?
there's not really a proper equivalent
microsoft, maybe?
why does searching for anything related to windows tech support net absolutely useless resulst
I could see Microsoft making some moves. Or Amazon?
"vcf file not shown in explorer" "TO OPEN VCF file get this OPEN SOURCE vcf VIEWER!!"
Are you 100% certain the file exists? Does it show up in command prompt? Is the setting for being able to view hidden files enabled?
It 100% shows up in the designated folder on the phone.
I even copied it to a different folder, that should 100% show files in it on Windows.
Oh on the phone?
so its not some protected folder either
Android?
yeah. Old android phone that was my grandmas. Has like 160 contacts
The file structure of an android is pretty wack, you might need to put it into the sd card folder, or out of the sd card folder, or something. You're most likely not in the same folder on the phone.
I copied the file to the DCIM folder
If available, I recommend just emailing the vcf file to yourself to make it easier.
hmm. Guess I'll login into my email then
Ok but there's like two or three DCIM folders and the android filesystem only mounts one
But only one would keep the photos stored ye?
I'm pretty swell, you?
Hanging in there, thanks!
just busy busy busy
and what's with the ridiculously long message timeouts?
10 seconds isn't too long, just gotta condense your messages down. It's a spam-prevention tactic.
it's still annoying, spam-prevention or not
It’s not annoying at all
giving something purpose doesn't make it less annoying. Seat belts have purpose - they are still annoying
How is a seatbelt fucking annoying
living is annoying
because I'm 6'2", and they very often lock up on me when I move slightly wrong because they aren't long enough
especially when I'm riding in the backseat of someone's car and the belts are designed for much smaller people
That sounds like a personality problem you need to alter. Stop being so tall
😆
I'm 6'4" and they're fine for me, usually just leg room
next large government document leak should be on this server
to be honest, being tall is annoying. 6'2" is just tall enough that I don't fit in some things well - some doorjams are too short, cars harder to get in and out of, etc. but it's no where near tall enough to be an asset. I'm not qualified to be amazing at basketball with no skill just because I'm tall
Yes
@full fossil may allah guide you
@dark spruce I hope They guide me to a source of giving a shit
I'd love to just be 5'4 rather than 6'4 cause at least I fit in things and clothes shopping isn't hell
Just pick 5’9”, right in the middle!
(I didn’t do the math)
admittedly, I have less issue when I'm driving and in my own car. But like, road-tripping with some buddies and I get stuck in the back seat? Any slight move and the belt locks up until I completely remove it
Just sleep the whole time lol
Man I’m 5’7” and my head touches the roof in the back seat
How small is your car?
I do sometimes 😂 Sometimes they get grumpy - I'm supposed to keep them awake! lol
Most annoying thing for me in someone's car is the top of my head hitting a sharp ass handle
Same, I bet my back would feel better. Although I'd look a lot fatter
Why do you know people with ass-handles?
Sharp-ass
Virgin media just installed fibre into the basement flats and I'm going to get 1Gb/s
I'm going from 500KB/s
Nice! Just be careful
Nice XD I love xkcd
I used to have 1Gb/s internet....
now I have a 10Gb/s LAN and 2Gb/s internet
Why not just do 2.5gb/s rj45?
ironically, much more expensive
Seriously?
there's a lot of used enterprise hardware for 10Gb/s internet if you use SFP+ instead of RJ45
there's almost zero market for enterprise 2.5Gb/s network gear
Is SFP+ more delicate?
My flat isn't wired up for ethernet and there's only one port
nah, but it's maybe a little more complicated, and not good support on consumer hardware. My latest desktop, I bought a motherboard with on-board 10Gb/s, but all desktop motherboards with 10Gb/s only have RJ45
bah I just backed up my grandmas contacts to my phone
so I have to use an expensive (and hot!) SFP+ to RJ45 adapter
I now have 200 contacts. 🧌
but SFP+ is more flexible since it's just a format to plug modules into. Those modules can be various types of fiber, or RJ45
I am tired
so, you can go buy a 48-port used enterprise managed switch with 10GbE SFP+ for a few hundred dollars on ebay
Gggdewww
the catch being that you'd have to learn how to configured and manage said switch
I need duel 10GB/s ports. One wired to my NAS and the other to my router. Would SFP+ be the way?
I'd recommend this as your best bet for small amounts of 10Gb/s:
https://mikrotik.com/product/crs305_1g_4s_in
Give me a funeh compooter cmfact
usually can be bought for under $150, has 4 SFP+ (10Gb/s) ports, and can be powered with PoE
The issue is that I often am pulling way over 10Gb/s from the internet and my nas
So I would be bottlenecked
you are getting over 10Gb/s internet?
Just a compatibility thing
Future proofing
I'll get 10Gb when it comes available
im 6ft4, i fit into clothes and cars and everything else, just fine
I've been thinking of getting this, would it be a good idea? https://www.scan.co.uk/products/2-port-intel-x550-t2-ethernet-converged-10-gigabit-pci-e-network-adapter-oem
Cars are fine except my mom's car, but I'm also a woman so...
I'm sorry, but I'm a bit confused now. I doubt you are getting 10Gb/s internet, so 10Gb/s should be fine. You'd need a 10Gb/s router anyway
I've just learned to get things that are like too wide for me and that works despite looking a little weird sometimes
Intel NICs are generally great choices, but I'm a bit biased ;)
@fossil frost how goes?
or just accept that things in your size are always gonna be too short, but fit well
The startek ones with their black pcbs are really sexy tho but like double the price lol
going ok, made my CTO look like a tit in front of my CEO last week, by doing a project he spent 2 hours trying to do, in 15 minutes
LOL. Hopefully that doesn't come back to bite you
Eh. If you are going 10GbE, you care about the network performance, not the looks
nah, CTO thought it was funny/impressive that i could knock out a chat bot, fronted with voice to text, with bot framework and azure cog services... inside 15 minutes, and he couldnt figure it out in twilio 😄
That's fair lol
you should either make sure you have a flat network, or you have hardware that can route at 10Gb/s though. I'm running an OpnSense appliance which is both my router to the internet, and also doing inter-vlan routing
It took 3 hours to find a matx board with enough space for a 2 slot card + a nic + a AE-9 lol
Yeah, I just ended up going with an appliance after hours of searching and not finding anything
Thanks for the info
Does Luke have legs
the number 87 looks like phineas
Who? Skywalker? Yes, he only lost a hand
What is a "Phineas"?
from the show phineas and ferb
oh. Idk anything about that
Just watched the Apple TV series(Arrr!
🏴☠️ ) "Severence", was pretty ok.
it's about not taking work home with you
(He also lost both his legs)
He lost his right arm in empire strikes back and lost his left arm and both his legs against obi wan
hey guys , should i buy an Nvidia tesla k40?
it's 90 dollars where i live , is it a good deal?
Obsession's pulling me
Fading, I've come to take what's mine
uhh that was anakin
That is great
You can tell I hate Star Wars considering I skip the details
So then yes, he only lost his right arm
Anakin was the guy who got done good
Haha excellent
wasn't that Anikan?
oh, oops, you guys already did that 😛
💀
For some reason Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker are the same person to me
haha, fair enough
In my incredibly developed and smooth as a quantum mirror brain there just doesn't exist two Skywalkers, idk why
but smooth is pretty!
Thats pretty much the same for everyone that dont watch star wars
you can order a wife online
huh
nvm 😂
pre recorded message
why delet
cause it isnt i realized its a timer
still feels prerecorded ngl
i mean the donos are like 10-20 mins behind maybe?
No Luke from lmg
What is the desk or the brad?
Are y’all gonna watch gt when it comes out?
Unevn
🤨 okay gta v is realy badly optimized compared to RDR2 considering i can use way higher settings with much higher frame rates on red dead
what
bro its 2,790.00
gta on maxed settings i get like 60-70fps and red dead is like 90-120
are you playing multiplayer or story mode?
rdr2 is a massively more demanding title, GTA 5 ran on a fucking xbox 360
mostly single player
well, "ran", it worked
cap your fps to 120, the engine doesent go higher than that or else you will get massive stutters when driving/running around
Even Call of Duty Black Ops 3 is on 360
mkay just saw an graphical glitch in red dead, if you run in water in the first chapter when its snowing you get huuge white squares as water drops xD
welp sometimes games are good optimized for launch while the later releases suffer
fifa 17 got released on the 360, like its not a very demanding game but why
didnt they make like till fifa 19 or something or even higher on ps3?
Maybe for people who still had only a 360 at the time?
dawg gta runs on everything you just to make sure you dont excede the engine fps stutter limit
ah good point dindt think of that
🤔 i think gta may have worse fps cuz more cars and npcs and stuff and more populated in general
GTA V got updates and now older PCs have texture problems like things disappear and reappearing
poor people should just buy 4090s
Just found a used working quest 2 for 75 bucks
Well I’m talking about 2007 PCs or whatever people still have or want to have
people should have thought of that before they had shitty PCs
I still have PCs from 2007
I still use an xp pc
Are you running a 8800gtx?
Nvidia 256
gt 420
sucks to be you
gt 210
nvm gt 420 is 2010
No I am a tech nerd who likes collecting
Why is the gt 210 still for sale
Why tf not
It's worse than iGPUs from 2010
yes but if you expect them to work with up-to-date games, that's on you
I don’t but GTA V is from 2013-15 let’s say so that’s If I want to try that one
I got a 2009 iMac to run minecraft 1.19.4 at 26 fps
I like old pcs
You can upgrades these to 8 gb ddr3 and an ssd
Ik
This is my 2009 iMac: https://valid.x86.fr/66qswk
Ok it has an ssd in it now I need to update the specs
i dunno its like the question why linus did the 1030 video
somehow they manage to sell, welp i gues its mostly for pc's that are just for browsing the web or do word and exel stuff
Entertainment center or emulation pc is maybe why they sell?
they were never designed to be gamed on to be honest
i mean even my old gt8600 could play games like borderlands 2 etc without problems and i bet an 1030 will kinda have the same performance at least similar xD
Well depends on which gt 1030
1030 is a gaming card
The gddr5 version performs like a 750ti
wtf is even the purpose. anything that would run well on it could prob run on intel UHD or vega igpus. You cant even use it as a plex card as it has no media engine. Its just a stupid card
also a r5 5600g 😛
True
okay nvidia smoked some real bad shit to consider it an gaming card
It can do some games, they are right on that
Honestly if it's the gddr5 version it's doable
The ddr4 version is a whole different world of suck
🤷♂️ you can even play games on old af cards like gt8600 but considering the time the first 1030 came its kinda embarassing
What can you even play on a gt8600
Games a bit after or before the time
borderlands 2 on high settings for example
Maybe Cuphead might work
Borderlands 2 runs on intel hd graphics 💀
was a fucking garbage card that only had stupid mini hdmi and vga
I have a 550ti and it has mini hdmi and dvi
it was at times where i wasnt able to order shit online... it took me a week and 20 stores to find a fucking mini hdmi cable
there was enough space to fit like 4 full size hdmi's so why a fucking mini hdmi
maybe it was cheaper
when i finaly got that stupid cable it at least ran great
< 1 USD of a difference, probably a few cents even
mini HDMI also has questionable durability even compared to DP mini
sometimes it feels like the companys that do that stuff just wants to fuck us over
welp ppl should stop buying nvidia stuff for an generation or two
invest in arc
all the shit they are doing atm just sucks, like when the shortage was selling pallets of gpus to miners or ship less cards to artificially increase prices etc
they wont because DLSS and FOMO for upscaling and stable diffusion
Intel does not need our pitty money and i would like functional drivers on windows before id personally do that
intel definitely needs some money 😄
intel gpu's will still need a couple of gen to be able to be competive
yo where can i upload files, i made a commemeration vid of linus cus he da best youtuber ever
they are already competitive at the low end except in power draw [1]
[1] if its a vulkan game, DX12, or intel enabled DXVK in the driver for the game
🤷♂️ never say the best you dont know what the future holds
yeah nah. The DRIVERS needed a few gens.... which they have got.
Intel doesn't use DXVK their proprietary translation layer translates to DX12 not Vulkan
However DXVK will give better results most of the time
Either way the low end Radeons are still a better value in most markets
Wrong, they use DXVK for DX9 and i think they might have enabled it for other DXs
https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2022/12/intel-using-dxvk-part-of-steam-proton-for-their-windows-arc-gpu-dx-9-drivers/
I believe the translation layer (when not using DXVK) they use is also by microsoft?
Ok so it looks like at one point it did emulate DX9/10/11 to DX12 but sometime during the end of 2022 they switched to DXVK
Very cool Intel
they still emulate dx10/11 on dx12
oh my god if my math is correct ltt makes almost $30m a year from sponsorships and floatplane
nevermind the ltt store
It's just DX9 that's DXVK?
afaik yeah
I would like to see them actually contribute to the DXVK project if they're gonna use it at least.
I’ll take it, thanks!
you dont need hardware support for DX, you just need fucking drivers
the issue is they dont exist for arc
Not true

no, they dont need my pitty money
like what?
AMD's RDNA cards switch to a "GCN" mode for older DX versions
Also, AMD and Nvidia took ages to get good drivers. We’ll get there
As for Nvidia I'm not sure how they do it
Well Intel has had integrated graphics for ages
Uh, sause?
AMD had drivers and most of the issues with them were windows only. intel literally does not have a driver for dx9-11 for arc gpus
tbf, when they started making GPU drivers, they didn't have decades worth of direct x that needed supporting either
Like I said - we'll get there.
Arc works great on modern games with modern DirectX
They've been making GPU drivers for over a decade now though
iGPUs need drivers too
yep.
I'm aware ;)
but not for Arc
Arc just has no hardware support for older DX versions
what's arc but an iGPU with big power budget
Which is why it struggles compared to competitors
No that's the Intel Xe graphics
ehe
I'm just salty that intel Arc has one of the cleanest shrouds with the Gunnir A770 white
why be salty? Intel rocks
I'm salty that every other AIB for Amd and nvidia are going for either full edgelord designs or an egg
I can't wait until we release GPUs to compete with the 4090 and I can get that sweet discount
You dont need hardware support for all features. You can emulate them in software/however the native hardware actually handles it.
Thats why older gpus that straight up lack hardware acceleration for features in modern DX support DX12
Just wait for the 5070ti only $999
$600 discount les gooooo
Mark does
great - is he hiring? How's their employee discount? 😛
He doesn't get a discount but he gets to "borrow" cards
who do you work for?

He works at Intel
lol, have you not been paying attention to the conversation we just had? 😛
What to do if people beside us are drunk as hell
like all products? pentium to core i9?
nah, usually just the last few gens are in stock
so 12900KS?
I reread it and i dont see where you said you worked for intel
there's other products too, like some storage, sometimes random motherboards and stuff - but not at as good of a discounts. They had a samsung NVMe last time I looked it was $1 less than the Amazon discount
I mean, I did say "we" a few times ;)
oh, in the 4090 comment
I'd have to look. Depends on what's in the stock. Last few servers I built were a gen 10 i9k, a gen 11 i7, and a gen 13 i7k
does that mean you can get a 12100f for like 60usd? lol
am i the only one who cant leave people on read or delivered?
I don't see one. Cheapest CPU in stock atm is an i5 13500 for $130
damn thats nice
there's some 11th gen procs, but not 11th gen i5s or lower. IIRC, they just don't stock older gens when they run out when the new ones are available
still waiting for the 13900k, put a non-k in my new desktop since it's taking forever to stock
got the non-k 13900 for $293
thats a steal
brb gonna get a job at intel to buy out the rest of their stock of optane
what do you do? I need some teammates 😛
Why did they have to kill it off
nothing lmao im 17
i just happen to be in the know about computers and programing as a hobby
You can just remove the boost and power limits in bios and get identical performance to a stock 13900k
damn, well hurry up! 😛
you added wheels?
hey while you're here can you tell me what codecs floatplane uses? just interested
dammit, he deleted it right as I replied
damn him
Actually, curious- Ajax, how hard is it backend-wise to do auto-gen captions?
Nothing is THAT hard. it's hard to make it work properly. A sufficiently skilled person could get a functional demo in a day or 5
depends how many yaks you have to shave
I've got 4 to go, after that 17 sheep, a cow, and then 3 gerbils.
Now I want to make a realistic fake fur brand called Gerbil Fur
"You won't believe how many gerbils were harmed in making these products!!"
No I know the saying, I was just taking it to a silly direction
I've shaved a few yaks in my time
Was that livestream ended that early intentionally?
dunno i kinda dont like wan show to be honest so i never watch it
not wan show, the build
Colton must’ve switched off the mains
It was Microsoft ensuring he didn't get to play on it.
ah lol xD i watch em after they are done cuz i can skip the long talks to the floatplane guys or merch messages
Last 5 seconds - it was a pretty epic ending: https://www.youtube.com/live/k-T8L-WIGXQ?feature=share&t=9993
its kinda hard concentrating that long
it couldn't have been more perfect tbh
I don't think I've ever shaved anything. Or ever seen a Yak
You will log in four times, and you will LIKE it!
so you are gandalf or dumbledore?
will they go live again?
find out on the next amazing episode
He used a 7000X3D CPU with an ASUS Am5 motherboard. Probably exploded
They should tweet anything I’m sure it would get a ton of impressions
gamer nexus just did a video the other day on how badly ASUS's motherboards handle that CPU and cause the CPU to hit 200C
wasnt it mostly only when it failed to boot but still is feeding power to the cpu?
i think something failed first and then the bootloop happened iirc
of linus blowing lmg up
i had actually just tuned into the stream and saw linus worrying about the CPU temps before the stream crashed as he ran cinebench
ew youtube pop up
why not "too many ads"?
I just lost the game
tbh i dont notice it cause i use an ad block extension but i have noticed today while messing with my server that with adguard it doesnt block any ads on youtube
loser
noob
you guys are shit man hahaha
also, firefox mobile with ublock

Ads are served from the same domain as youtube. DNS blocks won’t cut it.
fuck crasheing into ppl with your horse in red dead throws you off it and kills it dang poor me
skill issue
i switched from tiktok to insta to finally youtube cause it just had better content that was directed at me tho i still get some random videos that are like so confusing
oh okay so there's nothing i can do against it when using something like pihole or adguard?
Correct.
It will if you block the domain smart.gif
Browser-based and MITM adblocking still works though.
lmao
Who needs youtube, am i right?
yeah been using ublock origin and has been going great
Woke up at 1:29am because of a nightmare
are you 4?
stay awake the whole night and make it a daymare!
follow for more life saving tips
I'm 15, hasn't happened in like 8 years
Was vivid memories of my old house
damn 8 years? i had a nightmare like a few months ago
can’t afford afford food? Don’t eat! You’ll save money for the rest of your life
Oh, you said life saving, not “savings for life” - oops
does anyone use whatsapp here? Web keeps logging out after browser restart for no reason but phone still shows logged in. Started happening few hours ago
do u use the beta web client?
beta what/
No... also it's happening only on chrome, not firefox (just tested)
oh okay then idk cause i only use firefox
blue names dont get nightmares
wtf yes i do
ublock origin on pc
i semi-regularly have stress dreams where i lose all my teeth
yeah theres a beta but seems like i opted out (i used it so that i can use whatsapp web without having my phone on me)
revanced on android
not first time , why dont they add login
seems they can't believe people can use whatsapp mainly on pc
1-0 win for apple
