Thats actually my point kinda. If you really look back, consoles have been dying for a while. That to me looks like a key contributor to finally doing away with their locked down services, sdks, etc to a large enough extent... where today we see xbox sony and nintendo crossplay w pc even lmfao

I mean why would nintendo license their games on google play or any other thing that isnt theirs? You sell the game and its console exclusively. Best business is best. But clearly they figured its more worthwhile to be more lax and have compat with direct competitorw

# last solstice aaaaaaaaaa the propriatary gpus.....

Well gpus are proprietary lol. I think nvidia makes all chips for any aib. The aibs put the chip on their own pcb maybe, etc. But the driver is ideally open sourced by any hardware's proprietor always. Its a fact of life.

The only person who knows first about what is even inside hardware is its manufacturer. They are virtually always the first ones to write a driver for that reason.

In practice, the whole schtick is about how amd releases a lot of their sources so that other driver can be made w ease for other kernels. Nvidia releases driver for linux but not source. It is better for sure if you wanna game any portion of whats avail on windows. But it kinda sucks... you rely on nvidia. Also sometimes enough people require non-proprietary one way or another. Hence the rewritten open source nv driver for linux

timid meadow
#

They could have ran windows if they wanted to

steep girder
#

And windows always goes without saying. Apple gives a shit about microsoft though. It's actually worse than free os: they are competitor lol

#

And yet they still released the usual ability to install only as second os right?

near nymph
steep girder
#

And for the same reason of running mostly windows territory crap, they even added x86 translation layer lmfao. Thats not just money out the window but to competition

last solstice
timid meadow

stray apex
near nymph

timid meadow
steep girder

But so far, competition (pretty much just microsoft) is still winning. Nobody would use laptop or desktop pc with risc soc. But mostly because it doesnt run x86 binaries (also lol because gentoo prevails if you can install it)

near nymph
#

Honestly what's stopping me from getting a mac is... I like Ubuntu 😂

steep girder
stray apex
#

Then what's the point

near nymph
#

There is... It just doesn't work that well

full fossil
#

Ubuntu supports arm

steep girder
#

But not sure if that would void warranty tho. Doesnt maccle require only windows always as second os or something?

steep girder
full fossil
#

Oh wow

steep girder
#

Because apple didnt release documenation driver or sources for driver on linuxes

full fossil
#

I didn't know that bc there is very little info

steep girder
#

And the chip is apples. Theres some kind of instruction set or microcode. OpenGL and dx support was written on top from my understanding

full fossil
#

Wasn't the m1 gpu an equivalent to an gtx 1060 6gb

steep girder
#

But again, pay attention to how they support windows stuff basically and because of it wrote whole translational layer for intel lol. The very platform they just left and spent money on developing a completely different soc plat

#

But for anybody ever trying to break free of intel and move to something 'open'... no linux support is pretty bad place to start. Seemingly doing intentional things to make it insanely hard for anybody else to write open source code... that's a whole other level

#

Again, it's ok because my entire point has been that they didn't spearhead any revolution with their SoC. They leveraged it to contribute to their usual qualities: unrepairable, proprietary af becaues the business model is you buy only from us. SoC is the next logical step if you're going in that direction too.

#

Tbh soc is pog move in both directions to some extent. It can also be more widely available and cheaper right?

dreamy rose
steep girder
#

Well actually deb and ubunts might be separated completely now just the kernel

dreamy rose
steep girder
dreamy rose
#

mint has done a Debian edition. functionally identical. they could just give up on using Ubuntu entirely.

steep girder
#

Mint was big but main selling point ultimately ended up being that they resisted snap packager the longest lol. Not sure but they might have caved already haha

dreamy rose
#

now Unity is continued on by i think a teenager.

steep girder
#

Mint was upsetting to me because it had like 3 metapackages for each of their desktop env versions (kde, lxde, cinammon, blah, mate). But you couldn't switch your mint version using them.

dreamy rose
#

not from what i've seen at least

steep girder
#

Heh. I think I always used cinammon. It wasn't bad. Outside of that it was kde or xfce. Xfce was nice for lightweight desktop compared to kde which even pre-plasma was pretty hefty

dreamy rose
steep girder
#

But then plasma happened and idk i just fell out of it. Xfce always for me. It has enough things. One way or another, you're a linux desktop user: you have like 10 windows open which are definitely a mix of qt (shouts apple), gtk and something else maybe

#

Gtk has different versions which are seriously incompatible in some places too from what I recall. It's one of the turn offs of desktop linux: your theme settings menu is 3 theme settings menus on one page. What a deceptive tab lmao

dreamy rose
steep girder
#

No I think they use qt in their gui

#

For* their gui.

dreamy rose
#

that doesnt sound right.

#

nope. thats real.

steep girder
#

Well idk it doesnt sound right. I just checked wiki page and it doesn't mention much

#

I think I'm just spreading misinformation lmao. I meant uses qt as the macos entirely

dreamy rose
steep girder
#

Right that part makes sense. I mean a lot of software closed or open source supports macos because the developer did it lol

#

But asterisk on commercial maybe because apple demands you can only support its os as using it licensed by them lol.

#

In other words, you can only sell on app store. App store means like a third of your profits go to youts truly last I checked. So does steam tbh. And google play store. It's funny how all three are tripopoly pretty much of all game distribution on a significant scale. They charge a freakin third only because the other two did. Literally no place else to go. Epic I think got cheesed and pulled out of google or mac store

Idk what they're doing now I have epic launcher with unreal tournament 4 free with untextured deck16 map

#

i get that Hackintosh is like a fun project but why actually use it as a main computer?

steep girder
#

But for that to work everyone has to leave to an 'open' market place. Just like with intel. Exact same story. Funny. Imma sign off here boys. Just remember: we probably are regressing technology to a dangerous extent in a few key places we depend on by now. What's sad is there's a worse scenario we're on the verge of: no technology at all because south east asia is at war.

Humans 2020: let's figure out a way to fight physics itself by shrinking down transistors with new design. The thing about us at war is we don't care about any digital technology and it all becomes smoke machines. The only digital tech we care about is the portion which assists in the smokey destination.

rotund laurel

the hackintosh is on my laptop as a fun little project and i decided not to do it to my main rig

steep girder

rotund laurel
#

steep girder
#

All it takes is ai that is trained to use clis for chatgpt. That and one input phrase pretty sure. That's what I still believe since a few weeks ago. I mentioned this already

#

So the irony is that they're already talking about implementing measures that prevent chatbot from lying. Now consider a scenario where you ask if it is indeed running in some terminal which doen't have any known published exploitable cves

opal spindle
#

I'm not wildly concerned because of the "hallucinations".

rotund laurel

but how would you prevent a chatbot from lying? especially when its using input from users? for all it knows it could believe (hypothetically) that 2+2 = 5 if enough people tell it that and it would see it as truth. (and please correct me if im wrong with this)

It ideally should check all possible CVE bulletins on internet and try some of them until one works. Then it would have a possible solution for max version of whichever program. Then it will try another one from a narrower list of just that program from that version backwards. If all of them work, chat gpt can answer you to its best possible knowledge which env it runs in and how long you haven't updated.

But the fun begins when you consider how it must check something as a result of an exploit. The bot will by definition use an exploit and deliver some sort of payload. The payload must somehow deliver information back.

So in practice, picture like you ask it if there's an exploit in the terminal chatgpt is currently running in. Next split second you see gibberish or something and terminal instantly typing by itself a hashed string which you don't know.

graceful burrow
#

I ain't reading allat

rotund laurel
#

wait are you talking about ai checking for exploits locally or on itself?

dreamy rose
steep girder
#

The string was hidden from you on purpose because bot somehow generated a string which is least likely to be guessed by you as a status code. Irl it generates at least two values perhaps as strings which by design user doesnt know. Then it hashes it and tries to exploit your terminal ultimately to type into it. If you're pretty much not likely at all to guess what bot is doing even in that split second let alone figure out that it's waiting for some message to be typed back that is not from user (but itself)...

dreamy rose
#

scambot got Warshipped lmao

steep girder
#

Think about it. What can a bot even do once it hacks something? How will it know the usual input in its entirety is its own code or commands from the other side of the interface it's locked down to?

#

But yeah i can't see any other option for bot other than test all known exploits on you if you ask it 'whether or not im hackable' or 'do i have hackable software'.

If you want 100% honest bot, the only way it can make sure to the greatest certainty is to hack you lol.

opal spindle
# rotund laurel doesnt amd cover overclocking though? i know with intel it voids the warranty

It’s not just Intel, either. Asked for its official stance on using XMP or its own AMP profiles on a CPU, AMD officials gave PCWorld the same answer Intel did. “AMD’s product warranty does not cover damages caused by overclocking, even when overclocking is enabled via AMD hardware and/or software. This would include any form of memory overclocking.” - https://www.pcworld.com/article/394250/why-xmp-and-memory-overclocking-are-ok-even-if-they-void-your-warranty.html#:~:text=“AMD's product warranty does not,any form of memory overclocking.”

rotund laurel

tech can be a nightmare

opal spindle
steep girder

But tbh when that happens, it's pretty rare to have a bug that doesn't affect whole os and crashes lol. In other words, you're no longer listening to the bot's words. You're interpreting an absence of your bot and the computer glitching out.

Outside of that, most problems of such nature you don't notice at all would probably come from our own user error. It's probably going to be misinterpretation, misreading, etc on our part. Agreed?

Just don't expect mcdonalds of all places to accurately represent the real region's traditional foods. Like 69mL beer lol. In Germany, pretty sure if you're not drinking 0.5L in one go out of das boot, might as well not drink at all

#

And the beer was tested with a paddle or something originally. It has to stick without any sugar added. If they found sugar in your brewry, everything was confiscated and you were like banned from brewing beer again kekw

most definitely i mean fast food doesnt represent local foods at all. around here chuck wagons are a somewhat common food and its not even available at fast food places

steep girder
#

With beer I feel like they actually have a tougher job because you can't make a universally most pleasantly tasting beer. Beer has to taste organic sometimes but the key might actually be imperfections or some weirdness idk. Or sometimes you prefer not tasting anything specific as long as it covers up or blends the flavor of c2h5oh nicely :P (getting maximally smashed in a party)

rotund laurel
#

the nearest one to me is a 2 and a half hour drive

#

germans are very specific when it comes to beer

opal spindle
steep girder
#

That's what ruins beer for me btw. When it tastes like two separate things one of which is vodka. Aka alcohol. Vodka's flavor is legit alcohol.

rotund laurel
#

well its such a high percentage

steep girder

I'm a failure of a Russian because for some reason I like any hard liquor other than vodka lol. The flavor of alcohol by itself is sickening

rotund laurel

yeah its hard to handle unless its a mixed drink

steep girder
rotund laurel
#

i dont think ive ever had one that did taste like vodka

manic torrent
opal spindle
steep girder

Usually cheaper beers that are more artificial literally taste like vodka was added to it after the fact. Actually those big brands 'ice' versions with higher alcohol percents to me taste exactly like somebody addd alcohol to beer

steep girder
opal spindle
steep girder
#

But still, I mean the goal in vodka is to distill just the alcohol out of it, no? Ideally just the ethanol alcohol and not the rest of it :P

opal spindle
#

Friend of mine brought this one that was very clearly two steps away from hand sanitizer material once. I don't get it now unless I know very specifically it is not from that brand.

steep girder
#

I feel like there definitely is but not sure... could be something else. I feel like the cheapest vodka is made from like byproduct of some chemical plant. Maybe soap or some sht. They clean it up and bottle it lol

steep girder
manic torrent
opal spindle
opal spindle
steep girder
#

Well that's the thing. Vodka is just as close as possible to 40% by volume ethyl alcohol and the rest pretty much water I guess. Traditionally, as a drink it also means you distilled it from something like rye idk

#

But in the food and drug world, you can sub out that remaining impurity from a tiny amount of whatever else came out of rye with anything up to its respective limit

#

Like even mercury should be fine so long as it's within the regulated amounts lmao

#

So imagine some chemical plant with organic mercuric compounds and it ends up with ethanol tainted with mercury. If you clean it up to a certain point, you should be able to sell it as vodka for human consumption

opal spindle
#

cringe see, potential things like the mercury might be a good point towards having a council that certifies that your stuff isn't co-mingeling with all that.

It was written as a story with a closed ending just like it should be. A lot of shows are written with open ends or even specific elements or roles that work around the production. So like an actor isn't secured for the next season; they write around it in a way the character can be ditched quickly via plot line etc

But literally the rest of the show you can't overthink it. There's always a reason and some hidden egg lol. Like the carwash not having a 'danny' according to Saul. The whole time it's showing Bogdan with the eyebrows lmao. The short version of Bogdan is Danny. The carwash did have one lol

It's just awful with browsers. Back in the day people used download managers.

steep girder
#

Yes. Apache is an http server. Httpd as in daemon I think.

#

But yeah the web server has to allow resuming and I think it's off by default. Idk but I rarely get it to resume once connection drops

distant wren
#

but interesting 🤔 its done by "chunked encoding" by requesting a range of bits

During a "chunked encoding" transfer, the sending party sends a stream of [size-of-data][data] blocks over the wire until there is no more data to send and then it sends a zero-size chunk to signal the end of it.
#

combined with byte serving 😄
Byte serving begins when an HTTP server advertises its willingness to serve partial requests using the Accept-Ranges response header. A client then requests a specific part of a file from the server using the Range request header. If the range is valid, the server sends it to the client with a 206 Partial Content status code and a Content-Range header listing the range sent.

#

but its different in Http/2 which has its own mechanism 🤔

In practice, nope lol.

Even Steam I think didn't give me 1 gig downtown Toronto from the same location. The upload speed of host is also important to consider. Even big service providers like Google or Steam... well to say the least my drive downloads slower than Valve servers. I expected opposite. Then again, makes sense since like a third of the planet is on youtune lol

#

But torrenting is multiple connections. Usually on a decently seeded torrent, you saturate your download speed with multiple connections. Again, 2023 google doesn't give me a gigabit download of my own drive and I even pay a little lol

manic torrent
#

Yes,.but even downloading multi gigabyte files at somewhere between 100 and 1000 mbit, it doesn't take long enough to care.

#

That was p2p already wtf, Yeah I mean I ditched flashgot and whatever for http pretty quickly. Back then the thing was you needed http sometimes regardless. Still you easily had like 56k modem and just over 100MB download, Unfomfortable era.

#

But yeah http download manager was used lol. Ability to resume download was in my prayers

steep girder
#

Wow nice lol if you have 500Mbps you're too slow; if you have full gig you're too fast. Unfortunate given that most internet jumps to a gig after 500 :P

wispy marsh
#

I have ~200, which is almost 1g

steep girder

wispy marsh

Uhh, 1G

Huh, maybe not

steep girder
#

1Gb = 1/8 GB as in bytes where upper case B is

Download speeds are usually displayed in the B bytes so the other one

If you have download speeds showing over 125MB/s, you have faster download than one gigabit internet lol

wispy marsh
#

My country has done a pretty good job of handing internet

#

I think I'm getting 300mbps top

#

Buuuut i also only look at steam download speeds, which might be limited to 300

steep girder
#

Also you have amazing download server if it's http. Because, again, freakin Google: caps downloads over http from drive slower than Steam lol. My main concern is do they do it out of necessity or not

#

It's 2023. Exactly. I should be like webRTC multiple connections in browser from google drive to different data centers of theirs lol

wispy marsh

I have a lifetime license to IDM specifically because of this

wispy marsh
#

Let the servers' cdn do the rest

steep girder

I think it's not just cost. There's a limited amount of bandwidth to go around. Line issue: no matter what the connection is at the data center, it's like 6.9x10^z Tbps in one point

mild current
#

You only ever need 10Mbps

steep girder

Ok... i just received my new parts which includes a 7800x3d and a B650 aorus Elite Ax which happens to be the 2 exact components that GamerNexus feature in their "we make 7800x3D explode" video and now i'm scared to even build this computer

5600g?

dreamy rose
#

or you can send it to Steve too,

storm pond
#

I do hope so. What's even more scary is that the guy that burned it with the gigabyte ( the issue is apparently more common on asus ) did it on first boot

#

i ll probably q-flash plus the mobo before building since they apparently released some fixes but it's still god damn scary

dreamy rose
storm pond
#

yeah... no OC and no amd Expo either. Just default settings

wind pier
dreamy rose
#

semi joke ofc.

storm pond
#

Yeah... i'm not even sure. And that's far from being a solution... i'll just go for the bios update and start praying i suppose

dreamy rose
#

if you had the money i'd probably just have gotten a 7600 spare incase it died and the board was fine. but yeah its not happening often.

dusty rune
#

its like being scared of a brick falling on your head

storm pond
#

i know, you would have to get a below average silicon and multiple issues to actually burn the cpu, GN apparently took some time to reproduce the issue, but it's the first time that i buy potentially faulty parts and that just doesn't feel good.

dreamy rose
#

its good to prepare for the worst. but not always nessasary.

dusty rune

yup

def a design flaw though, did they issue a new adapter?

storm pond
#

hmmmm yeah, but you can't really do anything if you burn your cpu just by powering up your PC. You do have to power it on at some point hahaha

#

but yeah, i shouldn't worry too much. EVERYTHING IS GONNA BE FIIIIIIIIIIINE

dreamy rose

I'll build tomorow. If i'm not back tuesday, the computer exploded and i'm dead
