the reason why they lost it like that was because they didn't use a flame diverter... and they dug a 5 meter deep ditch which launched debris up at the engines, which like honestly if you look at the hole it dug at least I am more shocked that it only took out a few engines and some of the gimbling hardware which lead to the destruction of the ship rather than it just blowing up on the pad.

After a flame diverter is installed I expect it to not go so horribly, no I don't expect a full success, this will still be test hardware, but in my books a rocket gets 3 chances to actually do a launch before I say yeh this doesn't look so good. Test hardware is test hardware, it's fine for it to fail as long as you learn something, like would it be better to not fail, sure, but as long as you learn stuff to use on the next test article it's fine.

And they learned that flame diverters are important also that they do actually have proof that they have a large tolerance for engine failure as it wasn't until they were 8 engines down and the gimbling hardware blow up that it went completely out of control and I am sure they learned other things.

I really don't know why we got hung up on the effect of the atmosphere on a orbital fuel depo anyway, it's a relatively small effect given you put it up at like 300km or so. As said the point of putting a "fuel depo" on the moon is that you can get water there which can be split into hydrogen and oxygen and cooled to get liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen so then you only need a relatively small amount of fuel to get it into orbit around the moon
