But robotics are advancing as well

Watch AI solve The Theory of Everything and solve physics, FTL travel

fossil frost
#

it will get better and better... but its still a binary machine, its not an AI, because its not I at all, it just tricks stupid people into thinking its I... when in fact, AI as we know it, is just creating a huge algorithm with fuck loads of random numbers inside a black box, that has the effect of looking like it can do things... when it isnt actually doing them, its just acting like a parrot

fossil frost
#

AI isnt magic, its a complex computer program, and has the same limitations of all computer programs

stray apex
#

How do babies learn?

vapid smelt
fossil frost
stray apex
#

They have access to sensors that tige them positive or negative feedback

hollow pulsar
stray apex
#

If they get negative feedback, then they'll want to avoid the things that tended to be present during the feedback

#

Like, do you know how training a dog or human works?

#

It's just feedback

cerulean saffron
#

can I get a summary of the whole point of this discussion? ๐Ÿ˜…

stray apex
#

You can argue that modern LLMs don't really know what words mean, and that's true
But that's only because they can't interact with the real world, which is what our language is for

uncut axle
#

Maybe we will finally get starlink soon

#

Hopefully, we been delayed like twice already

stray apex
#

How can an AI possibly know what an apple is? It can know that it's sweet, but it can't taste. It can know that it's red, but it can't see.

stray apex
#

Well yeah, they try to stop people from getting chatgpt to break so
It's gonna be resistant to a lotta stuff

stray apex
#

What's really the difference between someone who's traumatized by the smell of seawater and midjourney putting Getty images logos in places?

cerulean saffron
stray apex
#

That soldier might not actually be excited by the thought of human waste, but their brain has incorrectly associated the scent and the excitement

#

Or like, Amazon's hiring AI which discriminated based on a variety of factors

cerulean saffron
#

The one current concern I have about all this AI stuff is... the products that are made using it, are centralized, and provided as a service to anyone who can pay (or sometimes even for free), and it's capable of collecting more data and making better predictions than anything else...

stray apex
#

Well, you're trying to be reasonable and that's no fun

stray apex
#

People will argue that we've always found new roles in the past, but we've never had anything that could learn

#

Yes, the ability of AI to manipulate humans could be fascinating
Also terrible, but that's most tech

polar fern
#

I think YouTube should become independent again.

stray apex
#

Really the issue is that if you do get sufficiently advanced AI, how do they want?

#

I suppose they'll want the same way anything wants, which depends on the data input

#

Yes, but people have always enjoyed sweet

#

Candy is just us finding ways to get sweet

cerulean saffron
#

Also, AI stuff has a long way to go, yet it is genuinely scary how it's better than any human at doing certain things... How Midjourney can put together an image that fits descriptions very well, so fast, is something a human can't easily match, specially because of how limited memory and data we individually have. No 1 human can properly go through the insane amount of data and training an AI model can, and this is already the case, these models will only improve from this point forward

The things that AI can't do well are... again, quite strange to do through algorithms to begin with.

I talk to every friend I have, in a different way, based on memories and past experience with said friend. This dynamic changes completely if it's a group of friends where each friend's actions affect everyone else in the entire group. Some actions happen in front of everyone, some actions happen outside the group that everyone isn't aware about, some get spread around as rumors, etc...

It's insanely complicated scenarios like these which we naturally experience in real life without thinking much, where it's hard to even begin to decide how to train a single AI model to adapt to a similar dynamic where the model is one friend out of the group (an AI) and has to act like a real person in a very convincing way through, say text conversations...

For research, I worked on a complicated image based AI model in my final semester of masters in comp sci and ever since, I've had this deep curiosity on AI but I don't know how to actually test these theories myself yet.

sweet canopy

having space under my monitors for whatever odds and ends is so nice

AI doesn't currently have the sensors to determine what things actually happen

# stray apex for all I know, half of you are actually gpt-5 beta

oh and about chatGPT, I didn't interact with it much but what happens if you repeatedly try to personify it as your friend...

Everyday, ask what's up and "how was your day" etc etc ๐Ÿ˜‚

The most powerful response imo would be if the model generates fake characters for a made up life story and continues to generate it and it's events over time and automatically responds out of nowhere.... "I GOT A PROMOTION TODAY WOOOO" in DMs xD

I want to make a model like that but all I've learned so far is image based stuff

stray apex
#

right now the AI we have are like the mainframes that we started with

#

we haven't really hit the level of integration that smartphones have

cerulean saffron
#

Sounds interesting... so, I will do

crystal ocean

people have to accept ai for it be super integrated a lot of people dont like ai

stray apex
cerulean saffron
stray apex
#

you can't tell your AI "buy me a gift for my girlfriend" knowing that the AI knows your girlfriend far better than you do, understands your budgetary constraints and will choose something that will ship on time

cerulean saffron
#

Every device I own for the rest of my life will be rooted with full control over software* stuff and I'll continue to personally obliterate always-on listening assistant apps from my phone(s) ๐Ÿ˜‚

stray apex
#

probably whatever apple or google comes up with
apple might just use bing, who knows?

#

if your AI doesn't know, it can just ask your girlfriend's AI

cerulean saffron
stray apex
crystal ocean
#

i always wonder what were people thinking of technologies that were big and failed years down the line there's no guarantee ai will succeed

stray apex
#

people can get sad and depressed if we're not simulated, which is bad and should be something that the AI should be trained to want to avoid

cerulean saffron
#

The thought process that goes into getting a gift for your girlfriend or so or whatever is something that should always always be done by you, or someone who knows that person personally... not an algorithm...

light jacinth
stray apex

stray apex
#

well, the lives of many humans and animals

stray apex
crystal ocean
stray apex
#

mostly through automation
the issue is transport and distribution

#

currently there's not enough incentive for our flawed human systems to deal with that

#

yeah, the issue with centralization is just that it's too hard for humans to manage

#

give me fully automated luxury AI space communism

#

no, that is centralization

crystal ocean
stray apex
#

if you build one big enrichment plant in washington, it can be cheaper to transport raw uranium there, enrich it and then ship it back

#

doing everything whereever it is is distribution

#

centralization needs lots of transport

#

distribution is less efficient

#

as the costs of transportation rarely outweigh the benefits of economies of scale that centralization benefits from

#

it's much more efficient per unit processed to do everything in one spot, usually

#

except you need to build factories at every single mine for every single item

#

which is totally impractical with modern manufacturing methods

cerulean saffron
# stray apex I want to live in something resembling Ian Bank's culture, not some stupid world...

I'll dial it down from AI to something very simple and obvious... we can sit for hours, we can have a wheelchair with a motor in it that helps us move around even indoors, we already have motorbikes, cars, planes, etc. Yes it's easier, yes it's essential to travel long distances in a short amount of time, but still, walking and exercising is important.

Same way, sure, use AI as a tool to assist you in whatever way you find comfortable, but I'm afraid it'll get to a point where people, and I'm talking very very lazy people, can decide to completely stop thinking for themselves and using AI for everything, and if AI can't help them somewhere it'll be too much of a problem, kinda similar to ending up sitting for so long that you can't walk anymore

Also how I can use chatgpt and just ask it to give me an answer to some class assignment (im done with masters now), but I can still step in and do the whole thing myself, meanwhile students now, who always use chatgpt for their answers and it's always worked, will find themselves completely stuck if it can't answer something for them.

ig im going a bit too far but I personally know extremely lazy friends and that's what has me concerned

Imagine broadcasting in real time, a racing vehicles performance data for all of the other teams to just take a look at ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

tiny saffron

I'm thinking how much data can a team of f1 needed to transfer

#

The temps, rpm, and the cams

polar fern
#

you have steering position sensors you have crank sensors you have rpm sensors you have probably about 50 different temperature sensors you have suspension sensors and you have all different sensors for tyre pressure intake air pressure mixture all of that stuff.

#

Basically anything that can be monitored by computer is broadcast back to the pit for them to analyse

past egret
polar fern
#

No, they send it from an antenna on the car to a recording device in the pit

past egret
#

its not the telemetry on the cars that require 5G, its the data sent back to HQ

polar fern
#

And if they need to look at it at their engineering headquarters, they can then transmit that via satellite

past egret
#

not fast enough

tiny saffron
#

Is that something that the engineers look at so they can improve the car?

past egret
#

its a live data feed, idk if its 5G but i highly doubt its satellite as well

polar fern
#

The data they view remotely is not being acted on real time it is just being monitored and recorded for reference. Itโ€™s only the people who are in the pit trackside who are making adjustments as needed.

tiny saffron

Is it maybe for the broadcasting?

tiny saffron

Uh ok.

past egret

they are literally watching every tick of the telemetry to make decisions

polar fern

past egret

polar fern

The latency alone would make anything like that pretty pointless

past egret
#

thats why they need the fast connection which has been the whole point of the conversation

tiny saffron
#

Yes you win ,you get free Bonzi Buddy download link

polar fern
#

There is no wireless connection that can transmit that quickly that much data over a long distance with low latency

#

The technology doesnโ€™t exist

tiny saffron
#

Jokes aside, I still see no purpose of 5G to the mass market

tiny saffron
polar fern
#

In the age of pandemic and remote work and school, I see a very important role for high-speed cellular data and good landline connections for fixed Wi-Fi. The real issue is that companies are being stingy about upgrading the backhaul to towers that may already have the newer equipment installed.

tiny saffron
#

IMO all cellular connections will barely need the super high speed connection. Most work you'll need that is in your own house

polar fern
#

Instead of paying millions of dollars for sports team sponsorships and the like they should be focusing on their infrastructure, physical plant and training their technicians to the latest standards

#

I disagree, because if you leave your house that high speed goes away

tiny saffron
#

That's the question, why you will need the 5G speed when you leave your home?

#

The most bandwidth demanding task AFAIK is just youtube

polar fern
#

I mean, you do realise that most providers are only giving consumers access to around one gigabit, so itโ€™s not even the full capability in the ideal setting

timid meadow
tiny saffron
#

Ayy that's one example I can see

past egret
polar fern
#

There are many creators and people who do work on the road and so on that absolutely need higher data speeds because software updates and video files and so on and so forth take up a lot of room in a pipeline. And if the pipeline is not wide enough, itโ€™s going to bog down and cause loss of productivity.

tiny saffron
#

But it feels like that would not work outside of a dense highrise city

polar fern
#

Tall buildings actually block cell signals

tiny saffron
#

Yeah 5G signal can be blocked by a piece of paper

polar fern
#

Low e glass and steel framing and rebar and concrete are very good at attenuating cellular data signals.

tiny saffron
#

Sorry, but that means?

polar fern
#

In places like Newark and Jersey City and Hoboken and other areas without a very tall skyline often have very visible building mounted cell sites pointed down the street from the side of the building at the end of the street.

#

I think everyone should have access to least 500 mb symmetrical Internet. Any excuses that youโ€™ll hear are all based on how much profit a company can make versus actual real world performance of these high speed technologies and equipment

tiny saffron
#

Sounds like the signal's gone when you walk into a building

No, because then there is another south side of the building from another angle

The technology is there they can do it they just donโ€™t wanna pay for the necessary backhaul and other equipment upgrades

I will lend you some megabit per second

Iโ€™m stuck on CenturyLink DSL with no alternative

#

Not even T-Mobile or Verizon 5G home internet here

#

Apartment complex signed a contract with CenturyLink making them the sole service provider

#

So thereโ€™s no competition so CenturyLink has no pressure for either speed or price

#

We have to pay them no matter what and itโ€™s awful

We should nationalize internet utilities

polar fern
#

DSL is really mature at this point, so service should be pretty solid. However, fibre-optic to the node should be the norm in most areas by now, even if itโ€™s not to the building or premises.

#

Yes, but we donโ€™t want the mods or warship to get angry at us

#

The provisioning here is 100 mbps.. limited to that because the cable between the ONT & gateway router is coaxial, which needs to be replaced with ethernet

#

Yeah, landlords can really suck when it comes to that kind of stuff

#

Mhm most likely what theyโ€™re avoiding is rewiring the whole property for the newer service which may cost a couple hundred bucks per unit

#

Itโ€™s really stupid because all they have to do is adjust the utility fee for a couple of months to offset it if they wanna do it that way or if theyโ€™re not greedy, they can just eat the cost and have happier tenants

My one ex-girlfriendโ€™s dad was a multi building apartment superintendent and my dad used to work for multiple different rental properties and itโ€™s all the same itโ€™s all about money. If they can save $5 a month on something else way, crappier, they will do that.

Iโ€™m seriously considering moving out from my moms place just to get better internet

I can barely play games with my friends

It is sadly and shockingly rare in North America to find property management and landlords and such to actually give a damn about the tenants.

I fucking wish I have that too but it only happens in the top 10 cities here

#

Lemme check if T-Mobile offers 5G home internet here yet holy hell

#

It was also only 47ms latency which is faster than my Wi-Fi

Cellular โ€œ5G+โ€

Cell service here -redacted-

Mine ISP will throttle my homeline speed when you don't notice

I deleted all of the Speedtest screenshots to free up iCloud space back when I had a lower tier storage plan, but in general, the idea here is the most cellular service is terrible and it does not have to be
