but... there's always more going on, right? If the 5400rpm one is from a different family with platters that are more dense, that could more than offset the RPM difference. Would check out reviews of them both, and see what the transfer benchmarks were--assuming that's why you're asking?

Yup it's not just large file transfer... This 4TB HDD will be the place for all downloads/documents/music/etc (the user folders, all of them excluding Desktop which I plan to keep on boot SSD). Along with that it'll have large games, setups, PS2 disc ISOs (need to dump em to digital format before they get scratched beyond readability), large sector by sector backups of boot SSD, and other stuff that doesn't always require fast storage like recording games

When I copy a 14GB game recording (few hours long) to an SSD from my 5900RPM HDD, it completes in less than 10 seconds and the actual file is completely on the SSD (no misrepresented numbers or anything) so read speeds even when I dont defrag much, are very very high. Write speeds are consistently around 100 MB/s and the lowest I've seen it drop to was 60 MB/s which is nowhere as bad as the usual 40 MB/s that normal 1TB HDDs can drop to after a point

Just want to confirm that I'll get that consistent reliable performance with the 5400RPM drive too

The changes I made are fairly simple;

• I changed the PSU to the HX1200, which is one of the best PSUs on the market. The Power 11 isn't really a contest.

• 128GB of RAM is too much RAM. The reason for that isn't really because I didn't want to give your dad 128GB but because DDR5 does not at all like four sticks of RAM inside the system. And the RAM being 6400 MT/s CL32, the memory controller very likely wouldn't even be able to run it at max speeds.

• The SSD was changed because it's cheaper. It's still one of the best SSDs you can get, so no worries there. Nothing else to it.

• The case was swapped to an NZXT H9 Flow since you mentioned choosing an NZXT case anyway.

• The reason why the cooler was swapped is because there was no way in hell that cooler could handle a 13900K. The 13900K and 13900KS are pretty much the hottest CPUs on the market right now, so might as well go with adequate cooling. Choosing the LF2 A-RGB also allowed me to throw in a fitting pack of A-RGB fans.

• the only reason I changed the GPU was because if you have swag, you might as well make it fit into the build aesthetically.

The rest of the money you can spend on sweet peripherals rather than pc hardware, truthfully.

performance-- yeah a little. the whole thing here is density. It's why it can read faster than the 5900. There are more bits to read per rotation, despite it rotating slower.

usability-- no difference, as a standalone drive. But if you had an array in RAID/5--I'm not qualified to answer that, but I would be more likely to say get the exact same model as the other drives.
