I still ground myself. Maybe it's because I work in electronics production and have ESD training more drilled into me, but still. Better safe than sorry when it comes to expensive components.

Remember that the first ram stick got instantly fried when they tried it, people forget that part. That is exactly what can happen. At least in the context of electronics manufacturing that is the best case scenario of ESD, worst case is field failures, especially depending on the class of product. Failure on a class 3 from ESD is very, very bad thing. ESD is more likely to fuck up your hardware in subliminal ways though, by either causing early death down the road, say dying in 5 years instead of 10, or causing other issues like killing specific components that may or may not fry your board.

Ultimately, ESD is just luck of the draw when it happens. It could do absolutely nothing, it could cause an instant failure, or it could cause a latent failure down the road. The thing is, it's preventable. How you choose to prevent it is up to you, when you're working on electronics you can just occasionally touch your PC case or another piece of metal that isn't connected to anything (Worst method), you can occasionally touch your PC case/Power supply with it plugged into a grounded outlet (better method), or you can just use an ESD strap and wire that's connected to a ground point (Best method). That is what I choose to do when working on PC components, because regardless of the odds, I'd rather not risk a preventable failure.
