my girlfriend can get the 350 mbps symmetrical here with the very next tier up, which is only $10 more a month. This is a good thing because the router is actually currently much faster than her Internet provisioning

Yeah, the issue here is not the router is the cable. The cable is only rated to 100 Mb because it is coaxial and is not shielded properly from RF noise for the higher speeds.
