It was the "BestBuy effect". Plasma is superior to LCD, but the LCDs had a brighter display due to the backlit panel. As people walked by the showroom, they saw brightness = better. But brightness has NOTHING to do with contrast ratio. So a Plasma looks way waaaaay better in darker lit rooms
