Didn't join the discord until recently so I know this is late, but it's something Linus keeps saying on a semi regular basis and it bothers me.

There is absolutely no evidence that fast charging degrades your battery faster, getting the battery beyond a certain temperature while charging will and completely draining and keeping a lithium ion battery at 100% charge will degrade your battery faster.

The first, well thats why we have sensors up the wazoo of modern phone batteries to make sure they don't get to hot while charging and your charging rate will be adversely effected when your phone cannot dissipate the heat, second the higher charging rate phones remove the charging IC from the phone which generates the vast majority of the heat, the actual charging of lithium Ion batteries is almost 100% efficient that means there is almost no heat generated.

So by removing the charging IC it is likely even if you are going from 5W to 120W the total heat the phone has to dissipate is similar if not less, and given the large surface area of phone batteries that actually really matters as transferring the heat to the case is not a significant issue.

If you need me to be very procice the controller reads the voltage of the battery and the resistance to know off a lookup table how much power it should be providing to the battery, controller will indicate how much power it needs to the charger, I use the word "indicate" here because it could be a packet of data or change the resistance on a data pin which the charger will know how much power to send from the resistance on the line etc etc etc.

Different ways of doing it, so not gonna go into specifics then based the internal IC will do a last pass to get it to exactly the voltages and amperage that is on the value it pulled from the look up table and will provide that power to the battery.
