so I have a i5 8265u. What can overwhelm it?
a light breeze
but I would recomment a 6600XT like I have - you could easily go with less GPU, but the 6600XT would at least not be a piece of crap going forward
eff it i get a egpu
what is good gpu to pair with an intel core i5 11400f
anything, reasonable. I'd probably do a 6700XT or a 6800XT
they don't sell 6600xt egpus here :(
No - you will likely need to buy the gpu seperately to the egpu case. egpu case second hand market is pretty thriving, because it is something people use and then don't need or buy and don't use.
the case is more expensive than the gpu. In total would cost 800-900 dollars. I would just get a pc then
You can get the cases used tho
yes, thats with the used cases
o lol
I think it still worth it even if it price of a low end PC because you can usually get better GPU than you would get in same price PC and you unlikely to be able to carry that PC around easily
then agian some of the cases are getting on for size of ITX system
Thing is an egpu is a mobo, case, psu, and small volume, and small size.
I'm building a 16core laptop but the motherboard supplier is ghosting me
just wondering, what if u get 2 gpus both having a hdmi cable, run it in a dual hdmi port to hdmi, then plug it in a monitor
would u harness both gpus or just fail?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fM7Ld9
here's a little build I made that is around 800-900 dollars
is it worth it to get a 3rd party card or just get a founders
That makes no sense
just wondering
I think it does not really matter
most likely it wont work
I mean, it shows you don't really know how any of it works 🙂
mmk and for 1080p 144hz is a 3060 fine? im trying to save as much money as i can basically
more than fine, you're stepping into 1440p with that
i just bought a 21.5 inch 75hz freesync monitor for 89€
is it a good deal ? the colors are pretty good, it's an ips, response times seems pretty good.
actually i think its a va panel
It's an AOC 22B2AM
fox or pc
are you happy? Then who cares
i mean yeah it's good
i was just wondering if i got a good deal
89 euros seems reasonable
Wooooooooo got a 970 Evo plus
Huh, they must be trying to get rid of old stock or something
bestbuy is selling one of asus's gaming laptops at an absolutely ridiculous price
5980HX+6800M $1,399, $1,207 for open-box
Even by desktop standards that's not priced that poorly.
That's 3060 TI desktop performance roughly. $400 GPU, about on par with a Ryzen 5700X, which is about $240, there's $640, leaving $560 for the open-box price, or about $760 for the unopened one, for RAM, motherboard, PSU, case, SSD, etc.
obviously desktop has a bigger disadvantage if you assume they have to buy a display too
since the laptop comes with a 165 hz 1440P panel
honestly, it's amazing, if a little difficult
my biggest frustration is the map system
what is a good price range for a rx 6600xt
66$
i think it's over 300usd still
Under $400
I think it's at $350 right now. Not a bad price.
I think that's part of the "platformer" challenge aspect.
as a "where the fuck do i go" kind of game, having NO minimap detail whatsoever makes it an absolute chore
i refuse to draw my own maps for a game that came out in 2018
and when you're in a dungeon and missed a key or a chest, good luck chucklehead
apparently there's an expensive late-game item that reveals chests IN THE CURRENT ROOM but it's no good when scraping through a dungeon for what feels like the tenth time because you just missed a key
i like being able to add pins to the map but i hate that almost nothing is automatic
so I did an IQ test right
and I got a score of 117 which is above average
but the score is an average of individual scores, my lowest was computational speed which was actually terrible, like REALLY bad. I was only better than %7 of other people who took the test, this is a sign of learning disorders like adhd, dyslexia etc. if I remove this score from my average I would have an IQ score of 120. which would put me at the 91st percentile. Fuck
though I am running on only 3 hours of sleep rn
i wouldnt count on an IQ test
tbh though it's kind of right
If you didn't pay for it, it wasn't a real IQ test
I did
I've always been smart, but I would always take forever on tests and I'm really bad at keeping attention or completing goals.
having that as a low score is described as "This can affect tasks like goal planning, problem solving, and perseverance in personal goals."
then its not an intellectual issue
sounds about right
IQ tests are pointless because they don't actually measure anything meaningful :P
a quote from hawkings about "IQ test, really dumb"
you don't have to pay for all official IQ tests
Intelligence is about more than solving puzzles
They're not perfect, but that doesn't mean they have no meaning
They have no meaning because they ignore fundamental aspects of a person's actual intelligence
coming from a man with a really high IQ...
the one I took wasn't only solving puzzles.
Yeah I understand that
the actual quote is "People who boast about their IQ are losers."
But there have been several studies with thousands of people involved which show IQ tests are unreliable
this is true
Unreliable at determining what?
what was your actual intention of doing the test
I was just curious and was surprised the results were exactly what I felt I was like.
"the researchers took a representative sample of 46,000 people and analysed how they performed. They found there were three distinct components to cognitive ability: short-term memory, reasoning and a verbal component. Results found that there were major inconsistencies between people's actual cognitive abilities and the results of an IQ test"
i have impressively bad short term memory
mine tested all these individually
- more
Results found that there were major inconsistencies between people's actual cognitive abilities and the results of an IQ test
How? how are they determining the people's "actual cognitive abilities"
would you do a follow test on mentioned mental "disorders"?
Mathematical tests and logic based tests, as well as memory capacity and length tests
There's people that argue they don't measure "emotional intelligence" and other nonsense, but the test was never designed to do that. It fairly accurately measures problem solving capabilities.
IQ tests mostly ARE logic based tests though
which has nothing to do with intelligence and social skills
thing is I have 🤣 most online tests say I have adhd but like I haven't done any official ones. TBH as an adult I don't want to go through the struggle of getting diagnosed and getting proper medication.
You could have an IQ test that shows below average intelligence but be a mathematical genius because memory isn't measured
Problem solving capability absolutely has to do with intelligence. It's the primary function of intelligence.
How intelligent you are is not how knowledgeable you are.
A more intelligent person doesn't know more things
they have a greater capacity to learn
ish.
You can ask logic based questions that give advantages to someone based on their educational background / history.
https://sputniksteve.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/climbthattree.png
if its interrupting with your life its good to have it confirmed by professionals, but to be subdued with medication because of social restrains is up to you
I'm certainly not saying IQ tests are perfect, but there's definitely strong correlation with their results.
Is someone who scores 110 necessarily smarter than someone who scores 105?
The problem with measuring intelligence is that we don't have concrete methods of measuring it because the functions and development of the brain is so complicated and difficult to generalise since everyone is different in how we operate
Absolutely not
Memory is something we barely understand. We use models of memory to suggest how it works, but it's not something everyone agrees on. And memory is key to intelligence levels
But if two people score 80, and 150, I don't think there's any real chance in hell that the person scoring 80 would be considered smarter in any sensible manner.
also it doesnt have to be medication, some adjustments to your daily life can help drastically with mental health
(self reply.....)
A combination of medications like SSRIs and therapy is the strongest we have for mental health treatment
depends:
The last time I took an in-person IQ test (about 200 years ago now)
I was answering questions and was corrected about how I was doing it. "You can't do it that way" is automatically discriminatory to different thought processes. (I was still getting correct answers, just not how they wanted it done.)
therapy and stuff
Doesn't work for every condition but it works for anxiety based illnesses like OCD and phobias quite well
in terms of ADHD the only true medication is Adderall lets be honest.. and I don't wanna take that
IQ tests don't show anything
adderall is pretty awesome but i understand
I've only taken two proper official tests, neither really had them care how I got the answers, weird to see they did for you.
By didn't care, I obviously don't mean I could google the answers, or outright cheat
but they didn't care what my actual problem solving methodology was
It's possible you just fell into their mold of how they wanted it done.
I'm more worried because I already have high blood pressure for my age. I don't think I could even take it safely.
IQ tests horoscopes and all that are just stupid
I took one as a kid, psychologist told my mother he thought I should take it
because my school tried saying I was chemically imbalanced and had ADHD
imagine putting IQ tests and horoscopes in the same boat
psychologist said he thought I was bored and taking classes that were too easy for me
and suggested I take an IQ test
You could have a combination of blood pressure medications and also the Adderall together if needed
Same stuff, making assumptions based on false ideas
I mean yeah obviously not in the same boat, but IQ tests are to a large extent pointless
horoscopes make assumptions based on your day of birth, IQ tests measure your ability to answer specific questions. This seems very different.
IQ Tests are (mostly) useable measurements.
Now if you were talking about the Briggs-Meyers Personality Assessments and Astrology? Those are both hogwash
Love the big man boris pfp @fallow echo
Found the person that studied psychology
I ignore all my humanities classes, get above class avg then play RuneScape
No other way to pass time
@mossy crest@tepid boltI got one for 320
is that good? it is the asrock challenger d 8gb on new egg
I don't even have a college degree
Wanna manage how intelligent someone is, show them a task and see if they can memorize it and teach others
If you know something then you'll be able to teach someone else it
Funny, and logical, though not actually a quote Einstein ever said.
From school to school, degrees can mean very different things
yeah I call bullshit on this, because I've done this countless times but then a week later completely forget all about it
School is just short term memorization
Not at all true.
If you're good at that then you're on easy mode
I took a class on web development, and my teacher just gave me a bunch of bullshit extra credit at the end of the year to get me an A because the whole time I would be helping other people I never did my work.
I actually think the best teachers
I'd argue it depends on the class
I legit never study for tests
are actually people who struggled to learn the material
And?
Not relevant at all.
One of my smartest teachers was also one of my worst teachers.
It was easy for him, he expected it to be easy for everyone else.
then they are knowledgeable but not intelligent
It wasn't for most of his students.
it's 2 different things
Yeah this
No, it has nothing to do with this.
It's that people who learned something incredibly easily
can often not understand how hard it will be for someone else
and as such they can be a poor teacher of it
I would say I'm intelligent but not knowledgeable cause I can't keep the focus to study.
They're two sperate things
People who are exceptional at things may make great teachers, for exceptional students.
but they often make poor teachers for average students
actually I can agree with this
You can't teach a talent
If a teacher knows how to teach something for someone to understand the material then I would say they're very intelligent
no they're knowledgeable
It wasn't that he lacked intelligence, it's that he taught at too fast of a pace for some people to keep up with
Look up the definition of intelligence
He learned the material very easily himself, he expected others to do the same. Most of them couldn't do so.
in·tel·li·gence
/inˈteləjəns/
noun
1.
the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.
if someone took 10+ years to learn something but LEARNED it and can teach it they're knowledgeable, but the person who took 5 years to get to the same point is intelligent
knowl·edge
/ˈnäləj/
noun
1.
facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.
I'm just dumb
He was my AP Physics teacher, I got an A, so did a few other people, mostly people who were really good at math - but a large chunk of the class straight out failed the class, because they couldn't keep up with the teacher's pace of instruction.
Don't listen to me
I hated physics, we had to write long reports
I didn't bother with physics lol
Most people at my school didn't
We had to take earth science, physical science, and biology
all other science was optional
I had to take chemistry
earth/physical were each one semester, and were freshman science
I got accepted into electrical engineering and computer science. Being the dumb person I am I went into computer science
biology was sophomore

we had to take 2 years of math, 2 of science, and a third of one or the other
I have an HVAC degree
We talking high school? My school required Biology, Chemistry, and normal Physics. I took AP Environmental Science too because the teacher was fun.
I think the requirements are stricter now than when I was in school
Now I learn off java 8 and we cannot use libraries and frameworks outside of our classes. Everything is barebones and we spend half a semester on for loops
but I liked math and science, so took way more than was required
I also tested out of earth/phys science
I only took AP English and social studies classes
and took biology as a freshman rather than sophomore
I hated english...
English sucks. I hate writing by hand
absolutely hated it, writing essays are a bore
Carpel tunnel
Was pretty okay for me
English is hit or miss for me, depends on the focus
By senior year I was taking 3 different english classes..
I like reading, when it's something I want to read
Reading feels like a waste of time since I always multitask
because I kept failing them for not doing the work
If you don't have a ergo keyboard rn, you're getting that anyways
I am fine with writing, in terms of, technical writing, but writing literature of any sort is not for me
Philosophy essays are very fun to write
my highschool teach punished me to write a 4 page essay on the word "interesting"
It's a joke because writing by hand hurts
I'm good at spelling and grammar, I utterly lack creativity.
And that's physically and mentally impossible
I am breathing and on discord. That's multitasking
multi-tasking is one thing I have never been able to do well
Breathing isn't a task
Like if I try and talk to someone while typing
Ok stop breathing then
I look down and realize I am typing what I am saying or they are saying
rather than whatever I intended to be typing
They're only 19, still believes multitasking is a thing, don't blame them
Bruh I'm 18
the fact that you can't means it's not a task. The brain forces it to happen
Even rn, I could say I'm multitasking
I'm typing and listening to music, does that count? 😄
I fucking hate sleeping, I wish sleeping wasn't a thing. Such a waste of time.
Being on a highway and being annoyed by discord people
But in reality my mind is switching back and forth between the pizza Prius next to me and this chat
That was really uncalled for
sorry
i think that's good
i think that's cringe
This just might be the worst take you've ever had on here lmao
And that's a hard record to beat
Goddamn
I pissed off one english teacher because they knew I read books for personal enjoyment, but refused to read the books they assigned the class to read
😄
It's just common sense
Ever heard of the dunning-kruger effect?
I had the proud distinction
Nope
of getting a D- in English one year by intentionally doing just enough work to pass
and also making it to the state spelling bee
Class time with Mr. Sanic
dunning kruger is about peoples inability to measure their own capability
get a group of 100 people
The less you know about a subject, the more overconfident you are about how much you know/how simple it is
ask them all if they're above average at something
most of them will say they are
Most people only realize they used to be bad at something
once they improve enough to look backwards and realize how bad they used to be
It's basically a study in cognitive dissonance
What's one good thing about humanities for society
I don't give a shit about humanities classes, I think they've vastly overrated in their importance to every day life, that has nothing to do with dunning kruger.
dunning kruger is about understanding your competence at a task
or lack thereof
There's a complicated web of different ethical systems that are essential for making all kinds of decisions, from self-driving cars to government budgets to vaccine allocation. Companies like google have teams of philosophers and ethicists to help in these decisions
If someone wants to be an artist, cool. They can take art classes, but art classes didn't help me in any way.
Lmao, gonna need to change it soon, don't know if there will be as good photos of either of the 2 pm candidates tho
History classes can be useful, if it's taught right. But it usually isn't.
You saying humanities "is just common sense" is a prime example of overestimating how much you know about a subject
Well finance is different than humanities
Learning from the mistakes of others? Useful.
Memorizing what date a war was, and what the name of the general that won the war was? Useless.
Ethics is humanities, and touches every other subject
Understanding why the war was fought, as a means of avoiding future conflict? Useful.
Well we have Russia and urkraine
That would be useful to connect said war to other events at the same time and other people at the same time
Not what I'm getting at, history classes here tend to teach history as lesson in memorization rather than one of understanding of the big picture
How else would you teach it to people like you?
You haven't even spent a year as a legal adult so I don't blame you for thinking humanities is useless.
In reality it's one of the most important fields of study. Understanding how people & cultures work is essential to making good decisions for the future.
Also USA skips out a lot and doesn't teach history right
This, alot of humanities is actually extremely complex, not my field of specialist knowledge but can admit it is incredibly complex as an area
Ignore all previous mistakes
I don't think any counry teaches history "right".
It's biased to favor the viewpoint of whatever nation is teaching it.
That basically just depends on how rich your school is
So why do we have it
Leaders make the worst decisions when they ignore the historians & philosophers
I think a lot of topics should be electives honestly.
Science clearly matters a lot, it's why we have he devices we're using to communicate with each other right now.
But the cashier at walmart doesn't need to know much science to live their life.
Unless they make drugs
If it weren't for common core, I would've taken a much different (and likely worse) career route. I'm very grateful that I was required to learn fields I wasn't interested in (at first)
there's a lot of classes that are very useful for people with specific aspirations
but aren't useful for everyone
hoooo, that's a loaded statement
I wish I was still as naive as you
Those were the days
I don't think it'd have affected my career at all, but I'm not going to say it wouldn't have affected anyone's, or even most people's. I'm sure it would affect some people's, speculating whether it'd impact most people's seems like an exercise in futility.
I'm a software engineer, and I use shit learned in my philosophy classes WAY more than what I learned in my computer science classes.
You don't realize how useful it is until later in life.
I double majored in CS and math
which were the two subjects I always cared the most about
less art and history classes wasn't going to change that
that's a terrible idea. You can look at America right now and see exactly why it's a terrible idea.
how does looking at America reinforce that?
My major was a hybrid degree of Psychology / Artificial Intelligence / Philosophy, and without a doubt the philosophy classes were the most important in my later life, even though I'm writing code all day.
America mandates the classes in question that I wouldn't
America makes classes that should be mandatory electives, and classes that should be electives mandatory...
I consider English (insert native language for other countries), and math, to be he most important topics, that universally benefit everyone.
because large portions of the US aren't really teaching history, civics, etc. And the resulting education of the students is leading to really bad societal outcomes.
Though when I say English I'm talking about making sure people can communicate effectively
not that they read shakespeare
I would agree if English (in the US) actually taught you english...
Which english? There's a lot of dialects in america.
US Schools desperately need more philosophy/ethics/computer-science classes at a young age
I agree with philosophy and computer-science
Can confirm, my school in the south fits this description
There's probably a lot more CS than there is when I was in school
BTW: Remember that America has NO official language.
"Official" is a meaningless distinction
It's English in every important sense
It's the language every public school in the country teaches first
It's not. There are many nations in the world with a national language. America is importantly not one.
I just find at least the english classes I took became useless once I hit high school...
It's not a distinction that has any impact in the way we actually go about our lives.
My school taught that the Civil War wasn't about slaves and the US didn't lose the vietnam war
Street signs are in English, schools teach English as the primary language.
It's not important to how YOU go about your daily life. What about the other 300M+ people in the country?
The primary language is English whether we officially call it the official language or not
it's not.
There are subjects such as the sciences which are required for a lot of skilled work that kids probably wouldnt study if it was up to them despite maybe being intrested later, I would require sciences maths and native language lessons for this reason
It doesn't change how they go about their lives either.
They need to know English to get by, or else they won't be able to read street signs, most advertisements, etc.
nothing would functionally change if English was the US's official language
Which is why every government form is required to be available in multiple languages?
Fun fact - You don't need to know english to get a drivers license. Where I'm from, they had the written test in spanish/french & for driving all you needed to do was prove you could navigate around
yes, yes it would, and the fact that you don't want to see that doesn't change the reality for large swathes of the country.
English becoming the official language doesn't need to change that
yeah this fucked.
people who know nothing about the US Civil War think it was about slavery
people who know a little about the US Civil War think it was about state rights
people who know a lot about the US Civil War think it was about slavery.
you can have an official language and still have the government translate thing for people when necessary
I have a distinct memory of the teacher making the whole class repeat after her - "It's about states rights!"
Then always handy to know a foreign language
I'm going to guess this was in the south?
Maybe this is a hot take but I think debating about the US/english relationship is a dumb argument to have
Where they didn't want to admit that they were in favor of slavery?
It's about state rights! The right for our state to have slavery!
I don't think non-english speakers are really any better off in the US than they are in the UK.
Or in australia
The countries all predominantly speak English
actually I find this to be false
And you're going to have a hard time living a fully functional life any of them without knowing English
Lets drop the english debate, it's pointless
this is true, but it's still easier in the US because there are also so many people who don't only speak english too.
Debating what about it exactly?
Lmao
I'm assuming the hoggers reaction was confirmation? That the school in question was in the south? 😄
I'm not totally sure, and I've been following along
this is literally the attitude that led to schools for "native children" to "teach them about modern society"
Yeah lol. Private school in rural south
when in reality it was just a way to get rid of native society entirely
Depends on the language imo
It's not an attitude. It's a statement of fact. Everything around me is in English, being unable to read any of it would massively inconvenience me. Especially nowadays where English is functionally the universal language for most of the internet as well.
So to sum up the past half hour, we all agree that the humanities is the most important subject in all of society
You would not fare well in many large neighborhoods where I grew up
Where nearly every sign is in spanish
I'd point my phone at them and translate them to English
😄
Even programming languages are english-centric
printf("This is a string of text.");
The string of text can totally be in spanish
This kinda just defeated your whole point about needing to know English to get around
the topic was whether english being an official language or not was meaningful
Are you aware that nearly all programming languages have been translated to many other non-english languages?
I've seen plenty of software that has a UI that is very much designed for people who are non-english speaking, but it's pretty much still always used english syntax in terms of printf, writef, #include, etc. when I've seen it
but it's pretty much still always used english syntax in terms of printf, writef, #include, etc. when I've seen it
That's what I'm getting at @warm wharf You just haven't seen the others
https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/javase/jdk8-jre8-suported-locales.html#input
I don't plan on going into software stuff. I want to go into data science with finance mostly and humanities is useless for that unless I'm doing statistics or studies

Like why do I need gender studies and child studies in that
gender studies is an elective....
No it's humanities
At least in my province
I mean, "electives" aren't really a concrete thing
By that I mean that what is elective, and what's mandatory varies a lot regionally
One day you'll realize that there's value in learning things that aren't directly pertinent to your career choice. Like I said earlier, despite working in software eng/data science/AI (with a finance AI project on the side), I found my philosophy classes to be most useful to my overall life experience. I enjoy living more because of them.
I'm in computer science with 7 classes and 40hr weeks
gender studies wasn't even an elective when I went to school
and to be clear I don't mean it was mandatory
I mean no such class existed
Same, it's a strawman
That's a course someone might take at university
if they decide to, but not mandated to them in a high school
What the cinnamon toast fuck is going on on Reddit?
Just don't ever go there
Problem solved
Catch me up, I haven't really used reddit in a few years
I don't remember the exact requirements to graduate anymore
Something about lttstore not having a warranty
but I think we needed 3 years of social studies of some sort
and 3 of english
and 2 of math and science and a third of one of the two
which I definitely think is silly
anything?
I wish my country required some form of additional study rather than just your subject of choice
It's not so much that I am arguing that english and social studies are completely lacking in importance
But I absolutely think they're less important than math and science
I think problem solving is the most important thing we should be taught
and schools here utterly fail at that
I think a journalist, lawyer, or politician would disagree
You are biased because you took those classes as a focus
I learned that best in my Symbolic Logic class.... which is in the philosophy department
Literally an entire semester exclusively about logic and problem solving
When I started programming classes it helped IMMENSELY
you know what I hate the most about virtual job training? When you realize your co-worker is misunderstanding something, the co-worker asks the instructor, the instructor misunderstands the question, you try to PM the co-worker correctly answering their question, but they don't see it so 5-10 minutes later it's not working so now the instructor has to take over their screen and fix it.
I'm totally not saying lawyers should be math majors, but I think debate, and finding loopholes in laws, etc. definitely benefit from problem solving/logic skills
I don't really know much about prices, etc. outside of the US to know if that's a good price for your region
but the A15 has a display that's among the worst in the industry
but what do you think of my humanity classes
I'm just saying that problem-solving & logic are not exclusive to math and science classes. There are entire suites of philosophy/sociology classes that tackle that, which you probably weren't exposed to.
are they pointless like I think
It has a Panda panel that is 62% sRGB, and has roughly 30 ms grey to grey
The arbitrary ones you chose out of the blue? Why do they matter?
I'm not answering that question because it's a flawed premise
is there a use for gender studies and child studies for learning
I honestly think calling such a display 144 hz should be illegal
If it takes you 30 ms to change the color of a pixel
I chose them because they fit in my schedule so I could leave earlier
how do you claim to be able to show 144 images per second?
Yeah, if you're a psychologist, social worker, or pediatrician
so its no use for me
That's called an elective lmao. You could've chosen any others, you weren't required to take those as you earlier implied
You coulda chosen Ethics 1101 and gotten serious value out of it
Sadly I doubt anywhere outside the US will have deals like this
Shitty cringe joke from 8 years ago
my college is messed up
That sounds like a personal problem, don't take it out on the entire field of humanities because you chose lame classes to skirt through school faster
$1,399
5980HX + 6800M + 165 hz 1440P IPS
no is it a good laptop?
Not particularly, as I said it has the worst display in any gaming laptop
Eww, only 16 gigs of ram
32's nicer, sure, but at that price, that should not be a complaint
was planning on it until I saw some reviews complaining about heat problems
It has liquid metal on the cpu and gpu, heat shouldn't be an issue at all
any better alternatives at the same price point?
no clue, I'm only really familiar with pricing of things in the US
what about this one?
legion 5's a MUCH better laptop than a A15
but it's a FHD not 2k as well as not having a ddr5 memory
does this matter really?
fhd = 2k
On a 15" panel I don't think resolution matters much, DDR4 vs DDR5 is basically no difference in most tasks
I'm sure he means FHD vs QHD
yes
QHD is often called 2k because 2560 starts with a 2
but still doesn't change 1920 is closer to 2k than 2560
yet oddly no one calls 3840x2160 3k
"k" means roughly how many pixels horizontally
I meant that if 2560 is 2k
then 3840 would be 3k
I was essentially agreeing with you that 2k is bad for 1440P
since we don't call 3840 3k
3840x2160 isn't really 4k but it's close enough that people call it that, 4096x2160 is the dci 4k that's the actual "true" 4k aka cinema
but 4k is an easier marketing term than uhd or 2160p... for some reason
that's just a weird resolution though
which?
like I've almost never seen a 4096x2160 display
I'm getting another set of 16gb for my main pc when the price goes down
I'm sure they exist
8k?
but they're very much not common
ofc not, they're cinema resolutions
they're at a bunch of stores
no
8k's super uncommon too
the bank here has 8k monitors
why would a bank have 8k monitors?
the "k" term is literally number of horizontal pixels for cinema cameras and displays
for ads
All my 4K panels "support" it but it just gets chopped at the sides
sort of? But not really
it was never designed for the normal consumer use
they have them mounted at the top by the tellers and they play ads
That's a lot of monitors
it is
resolution
another reason to call 3840x2160 4k rather than 4096x2120 IMO is 8K
1920x1080? is 1K?
8K is pretty unambiguously 4x 3840x2160
Nope, that would be 2k
2K = 2560x1440
Just seems like a huge waste of $
how do you even know they're 8k?
Like good 8K TV's are upwards of $10,000 still
Because for some reason, going from 1080p to 4K, we switched from vertical pixel count to horizontal pixel count
So by that definition, 1440p would be 2.5k
I still see 2160p for video options tho
no, 1920x1080 is a normal consumer 16:9 resolution, but if it's estimated into the dci standard which is 2048x1080, 1080p is closer to 2k than 1440p
^
again, because dci movie crap it was never meant for consumer displays
it just happened to be easier to say than ULTRA FULL HD
Oh wait it's just uhd nvm
Wonder how long till 8K TV's drop to a price point that they actually start to make any sense
never
Eh, I bet they do
because our eyes aren't getting any Sharper
That's not really relevant
you might not notice the benefit
but for marketing purposes I think they will keep increasing the pixel count
1920x1080 = ~2.1M Pixels
2560x1440 = ~3.7M Pixels
3840*2160 = ~8.3M Pixels
I mean, I just upgraded from a 15 year old 1080p TV to a 4K TV in December
I'm sure 8k will be affordable and be what mainstream TV's are eventually
I'm amazed your TV lasted that long
I had a 1080P TV for 9 years
but then it started turning itself on randomly
and I decided it was time to replace it
Oddly once I went to a 4k TV though, I quickly decided to go all in
damn, i was here looking at linux system logs, getting scared that one of my hard drives is 60+ celsius from the smart data.... then i found out it is one of the SATA SSD drives. 🤷♂️
Mine still works, I just wanted a TV that didn't look so garbage
like 2011->2020 I had a 26" 1080P TV in my bedroom
then in 2020 I bought a 50" 4K TV that was cheap
then in 2022 I decided fuck it, and went all in and bought a nice TV
for tv sizes it was because there are "generations" of glass production where it was the most efficient size/cost wise, so a few years back notice how 55" became popular in even cheap tvs? because a panel of that generation glass was most effective at making 3 55" and 4 43" panels with little waste.
there's nothing like that for lcd or oled/miniled
Though I actually went smaller this time
sort of anyway
It's really the same size to any noticeable amount
but went from a 49.5" budget VA panel
to a 48" OLED
Haha imagine using a tv
I honestly have a hard time seeing the difference between 1080p and 4k
what size display?
I went 65 inch thinking it would be a massive upgrade from my 42 inch TV which it was. But frankly I almost wish I went 75 inches
My family has I think a 65"
1080P content on my 4k TV still looks pretty damn good.
Maybe larger
just means you sit far enough
The way our living room is set up though it's about 10 feet away
When playing games on my 65", I can't tell unless I'm uncomfortably close
It's either 4k60 or 1080p120 so I opt for 1080p because of that
Well, maybe, TV's also upscale, so the quality of the upscaling varies TV to TV too
I have a 34" ultrawide that is 1080p because 2015... it's fine but it's very noticeable that it's lower resolution
Like I'm not sure if I'd be as happy with a 48" TV that was "actually" 1080P
Monitors are easier to tell resolution difference though
but 1080P content on my TV is being upscaled to 4K still, and the quality of the upscaling varies a lot TV to TV
I have a 1080p monitor, and I was considering trying to get a 1440p 34" wide monitor, but I'm not sure I could tell a difference
cause you're closer
you will
I have 3 27inch 1440p monitors and the upgrade from 1080p is noticable
Wait what size for 1080p
Maybe I'll have to try to find a shop with one on display to mess with
yeah I am sure if I stand right in front of my TV and alternate between 1080P and 4K I will notice the difference around edges of objects, etc.
but when content on it is 1080P
I've played with one of the 32" 360hz Alienware monitors in a store but it was 1080p and didn't feel special
I'm not like, oh god, my eyes
for me it's actually in certain games it's actually harder to hit a headshot because the pixels are too large
honestly sounds like a shitty display
360 hz is a meme
I mean, it was like 5 years ago
and 32" is just way too big to be 1080P IMO
So it was pretty ahead of it's time
then ut wasn't 360hz...
I don't think 360 hz displays existed back then
first 360hz display was in what, 2018? from acer...
I've never even seen a 360 hz display, but I know they exist
8 hertz WAN IP
it could easily be a 240 or 265 which it probably was...
High refresh rate large monitor didn't look bad in 1080p
My laptop's the highest refresh rate display I've ever personally used
1440p 144hz is so nice for games
I had a 120hz 1080p 16" laptop that felt really crisp
My laptop's 1080P/300 hz
why do you need 300hz
Who said I need 300 hz?
you're rendering double 144hz
I said it is 300 hz
😄
I bought it because at the time I bought it, it had the highest gpu performance of any laptop on the market
human eye can only see 30fps /s
the display was just, whatever
the jump from 60 to 144 is more noticeable than 144 to 240
Mine is 1080p 60hz on the shittyest IPS panel DELL could buy
after 165 Hz honestly you get diminishing returns
unless you’re a super high level competitive player
you get diminishing returns after 1 hz
this is a dumb statemnt
It's accurate though
Honestly, high refresh rate is almost worse if your monitor has bad pixel response time
Yeah, you should just print out each frame and move based on that
functionally? Not really.
1000/1=1000
1000/2=500
1000/3=333
The gains are instantly diminishing
Big brain time
1000/60=16.67
1000/144=6.94
Effectively, the difference between 60 and 144 is larger than the difference between 144 and any number larger than 144
Nauz, has anyone told you that you're an absolute chore to have a conversation with? Cuz.....
you can't shave another 9.73 off of 6.94
so there's no way to replicate the jump you perceive from 60 to 144
by going above 144
Basically, if you want to find the halfway point between 60 fps and effectively infinite fps, it's 120 fps
Oh, absolutely, I had a teacher in high school that kicked me and a friend out of class
because we told him he was wrong when he said america was a country
as opposed to a bi-continental region
😄
being pedantic isn't clever, it's annoying, and will get you fired in the real world.
yo wsg guys im tryns watch youtube w my friends right yes yes, so when im playinf youtube, I can hear the sound and they cant when im streaming
anyway s to fix this gang?
h0la
As a 25 year old millennial, I'm too boomer to understand what the fuck you're trying to say
Anywho, I'm off to go throw a witch into a lake
fr bro.
Not at all concerned with getting fired
Not even remotely likely, or a concern at all
Famous last words
I disagree with some of the roasting of peoples rooms in the latest ltt vid. living in share houses suck and people cant afford separate rooms which is why i think some people went with hamocks or beenbags to save space for the rest of their haven and loft beds (a bunk bed without the bottom bunk) and murphy beds (the fold up into the wall beds) can be expensive or hard to find. i went with a loft bed to save space since i cant afford to rent two rooms
the people i live with suck
It's not like I'm some 18 year old with no job experience.
who wants thigh pics ?
I've got 2 masters degrees, worked for the same company for a decade, and make 180k a year.
Gosh you're so cool
I don't need some nitwit telling me that being pedantic is going to get me fired.
nah being pedantic is important in many jobs just gotta find the one that suits
Yet here you are
What's wrong with not having a master's degree
Not great for your social life, ya know, the other half of living
No one said anything is wrong with it.
who wants thigh pics ?
how did they miss the gun just sitting on the desk right next to copious amounts of prescription drugs in setup 20?
like what
diss the wood walls, ignore the huge red flag lmao
idk ive chimed in late to this convo so my context is lacking but even then you can find people that appreciate being pedantic just maybe not like the above which i havnt read so i cant say
Overall being pedantic is a very negative trait when socializing, enjoying it is an extreme outlier
I fear I'm going to lose my job as like everything in my life, my initial burst interest has faded, so now I lack the motivation to progress.
idk could just be the autist in me but being padantic to not misunderstand or be misunderstood can be helpful. definitely has to be honed in though
Sounds like you got depression buddy, talk about this with a therapist if you have the means, a computer discord isn't gonna be able to help
It's also typically not a choice, at least not a conscious one.
Don't confuse being a pedant with being clear & concise. Correcting others for any small inaccuracy in their statements is just annoying
"Anything after 1hz is diminishing returns" is being consciously pedantic for no good reason
Being pedantic is largely a personality-trait, it's not something someone consciously does everytime they speak.
Hard disagree. When I was younger I used to correct people all the time, until a couple people pointed out that it's very rude. Over time I adjusted my behavior and caught myself before doing so. Now people like me more.
that to me is just learning how to present it with better tone but im probably wrong here looking at the emoji react
occasionally being pedantic is needed. There are terms and saying that aren't clear enough to specificy what is being talked about adequately, at which point being more specific is needed.
Other times, it's being a dick.
You can disagree all you like, it's super common among people with any form of autism, including asperger's, I'm pretty sure people don't choose to be autistic.
That's completely unrelated to what I'm talking about. Not all autistic people are pedants and not all pedants are autistic
just mask better /sarcasm 🤮
But how do you just help then? This has been a struggle I've had to deal with. Like I feel like I've gotten better, learned to ignore small things. But there's many times where I see someone having trouble or doing something wrong and I just want to throw up my hands and show them how it's done...
Practice. Be aware of what you're saying, and "generally" how it will be taken.
If what you're saying sounds anything like "Well, Actually...." you're going to be taken very poorly on a regular basis.
There's a balance that comes with practice and more social experience. You don't have to be entirely shut off from helping, but you should also avoid being overbearing. You can offer to help, but don't force it on someone
People learn better by figuring it out themselves rather than being constantly corrected along the way
And before anyone says anything:
Been there, done that, have the T-Shirt.
People skills take time, practice, and patience. Also, find some friends who aren't afraid to tell you "You're being a fuckin' dick. Stop that." when it's happening. It'll give you a lot more useful feedback to be aware of things.
so i went back up and read it i thought the deminishing returns comment was funny. is that what started this whole pedantic conversation?
a techiniqely correct joke?
no, just one more line in a series of them.
It was the comment, however, that made me comment directly about the pedantism
If you're following up a joke with "but its technically correct" then you're bad at making jokes
just like if you explain a joke then its no longer funny? i disagree with that
I've learned that, a lot of of the time now I'll just ask "are you sure? I thought it was this way....blah blah blah... I could be wrong though." people usually take that better
Explaining a joke can add to the humor in some instances, but generally it does not
If you have to explain a joke? It's not funny most of the time.
That sounds like something a sith would say.....
did obi wan stutter
That can still be pretty rude, especially if they didn't ask for it at all (or don't appear interested in getting help)
but people like to over explain which is also ok
all of these non social norms need to relax and shouldnt be attacked when they happen.
except that in society as a whole, social norms are VERY important to have
No one will attack you for being rude like that, but they'll be less likely to want to be around you
yawn* some more than others and masking is exhausting
There's a lot of societal norms that are fuckin' stupid AF, and should be gone, but a society without them would be absolute chaos, and not in a good way
people know thats why people mask
Mask?
WTF is your obsession with masking?
oh god im leaving the chat
Legit never heard it used like that
I'll also add "it doesn't matter anyway" I guess I'm trying question what their saying instead of outright telling them they are wrong, and then not really pushing it further if they disagree.
A simple "lemme know if you want any help" is a lot better in most circumstances. Like I said, people learn best by making their own mistakes.
Or are you referring to wearing a mask to disguise one's personality or other aspect of oneself?
This is a time where being more specific is important, as "Masking" has been a big conversation piece related to the COV.
nah i thought i had the spoons for this convo but i honestly dont (you can look up spoon theory). masking is the proper term that refers to what many nuruodivergent people do to survive and pass as neurotypical. Peace
Wasn't sure if it was that or just "putting on a face" when socializing
S'all good. Spoonies need to watch their spoons. (Or spell slots, depending on how they're identifying them.)
Seems to mostly be the same IMO
Like either way it's saying, be someone else, blend in, etc.
Ayy my setup got roasted in todays vid
is that a flex
all of the setups in the video were janky as fuck except for the last one
masking is so exhausting
eh
i thought masks fucking sucked but after 2 years you get used to them
now it feels weird without a mask on
Not that kind silly goose
🗿 sorry my bad ignore everything i just said
yeah I ain't talking about covid masks, I have no problem with those 😛
Yeah it is, it even made the thumbnail
Clean your room
That's my living dining room, not my room
Ya
bruh
I'm gonna take a wild guess that your room doesn't look much better
Honestly, significantly better, cause all my shit except for clothes and a few other things is on my desk
Do I need to upgrade the firmware on the deathadder? When i try to I just get "connect your device" screen and even if I reconnect the mouse It doesnt detect it
It's a fair bit cleaner now
لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله
حسبی ربی جل اللہ مافی قلبی
oops wrong server
but its still cool
even if u dont understand
it has a profound impact on me
Guys question, i have an empty ram slot in my laptop, if I buy another one of the stock ram on my laptop, is it possible to plug both rams in?
yeah
i did that actually so it is
rule 4 says no talking about religion. happy it had a good impact on you though. google translate is great
Yeah, it’s crap laptop so the ram clock is 1600
DDR 3, should be fine
lol its the Qalima in arabic
its basically a decleration
Most laptops don't allow xmp
yea not the point still religous in nature and translation
Wdym
yeah it is
i forgot the rules xd
my laptop has an option for XMP in the bios but the ram doesn't seem to have any profile 🤷
Most laptops run the ram at it's lowest speed even if the ram is rated for higher
So stinky
Yup
any of you guys watch anime
So like in theory I can overclock it
Just asking, if I put 2 ram sticks in there it will be fine?
Like it ddr4 you might install a 3200mhz kit but it would run at 2133 or 2400
It’s ddr3
Yes in fact it might run better since it's now in dual channel
not entirely true, the ram could just be 3200mhz. I think a lot of laptop ram is like that, it doesn't even use XMP
How does the deathadder essential compare to the zowie ec2?
my laptop ram is just straight up 3200mhz CL22 no XMP
While your in your laptops guts you might want to repaste it @fallow zinc
Thermal paste?
Yes
Yeah I did that 3 days ago
O nvm then
But my new ram wasn’t here yet so I closed it back
Will open it back up once it’s there, makes it easier as I don’t have to go and poke around the cpu anymore
do mods usually get online here or no
These old laptops don’t have a cpu heatspreader, meaning the thermal paste is directly touching the cores
btw guys any news sources you know for tech that are actually good
Gets me nervous, anyways, plugging in a ram should be easy enough
except for techlinked lol
They mostly hide in the shadows
dont they stay active or socialize here
i was thinking of making friends with them xD
like in other servers
They are active in the floatplane chat a lot
In #pilot-toast they do
where
In the floatplane chat
i havent got floatplane subscription yet
So do you think my ram might be dying
They are active in it as we speak lol
Ram is hard to kill
Like I said frequent freezes and graphics corruptions
Aged?
Ram is one of if not the strongest part of your PC
The outer shell is 💀
So your theory is it’s not dying
guys
It's possible
u all got the floatplain subscription
Yup
bruh i havent
I'm a OG fp sub
so i cant chat them their
Yeah, when I was reapplying the thermal paste, I actually suspected that it’s the disk
dang do u talk to mods their
But recent BSODs have error messages related to ram issues
That’s what leading to my theory rn
Yes
That could be a red herring
It’s dying isn’t it
Rams pretty old tbh
Like 7 years
Do you know what a red herring is
A fish?
Running this will confirm whether your RAM is broke
It takes several hours
Yeah should be shorter than that
It does several passes, you don't have to do all of them
Maybe if you read it, you'll know more
can u gift the subscription in floatplane or no
Not unless you like someone else knowing your credit card details
Sounds complicated, will do it this weekend, still need the laptop for work
Weird
Then what could be the thing?
What about hdd?
How long do these things last
HDDs are very random, because of the moving parts
it could be the motherboard
Saw that
anywhere from 1-3 years, on up to 5-10 or longer
I’ve got a wd blue 500gig hdd
are causing ur pc to freeze
Great. Still Random.
Laptops manufactured back in 2015
or it can simply be a driver or os issue
So it’s passed the 5 years
menaing the software
did u check the drivers
I’m kinda start to think back about my hdd dying theory
Yes
i like ur name
Have you tried a fresh windows install?
No
Don’t have a thing that I can back my files up to
But I’ve tried to validate windows files
sign up for a new GMail and get 15GB?
I’d rather get my 64 gb sd card lol
But yeah, I am actually suspecting a hardware issue
As every time I knock on it, screen goes bruh
Freezes or graphics corrupts
So what do you think, should I get a same hdd#
And swap the disk and see if that’s the issue
Is it a disk drive or SSD?
Hdd
Get an SSD
Yeah, the same hdd drive comes in 8 usd brand new
Have you used CrystalDiskInfo to see if the drive has any bad sectors
Boot time painfully slow af
Don't get that. Get an SSD.
I have not
That's an easy check to do
I’m not a tech geek, not sure if that’s gonna cause problems
Like, it’s laptop, what if it doesn’t fit
It will only make everything better
It's a universal 2.5in standard
And one of the best upgrades you can give an old laptop. Do that before getting new RAM
Extra ram won’t hurt
Correct, but an SSD will provide more immediate benefits and is a higher-priority upgrade
It will feel like a brand-new computer
what this dude said
I know that one
But from my experiences of opening up my laptop, I think they have a special mount that holds the disk
Might have to design and 3D print a bracket if it’s really needed
no need
All laptops have a special mount to hold the drive, but all laptop drives are the same exact size
Universal?
just get a 2.5 ssd it always fits in
yeah its all univeral
That’s convent
bro i can an nvme ssd on my laptop
?
So if I just swap hdd to ssd I can get away without tweaking any settings?
i used to have a harddrive only
u will ofc lose ur data and os tho
Plug and play?
u can easily get a windows 10 usb disk
That’s okay for me
u can clone the drive
bro
I may just back up my data to google drive
You'll have to create a fresh install. Your old drive can keep its data and you can get an adapter to plug it in with USB and transfer data
Bad advice. Do not clone the drive. Ever
the boot time in ssd is like 3 to 4 seconds
Yeah I didn’t take that seriously
what
🙄
What if there are viruses in there that’s causing this whole chaos
Cloning is just a risky procedure that doesn't really save you much time
May not even be hardware and now you are cloning it to the new stuff
There are lots of complications around it
As a gamer I’ll just back up my worlds onto google drive
true just backup the important data ig
Don’t think I have any important files locally
The old drive can exist as an external backup
Need an adopter?
Yeah they're cheap
bro in hardddrives it used to take proper 3 to 5 minutes to boot up properly
and in ssd its below 10 seconds
I know that one
I have this one
yee
Weird, not sure if my new laptop have a ssd but it boots in 5 secs
I don’t think it said it’s ssd when buying
i tried to get itbut the hardrive properly got some moisture
i dont think it will work
You can get unpowered ones for even cheaper
Every laptop of the last 5 years boots with an SSD
I think it’s unpowered, as for my laptop, some hdd pins aren’t being used
So like 100%?
not all
No I mean the cable. Your hard drive is powered
That’s why it’s damn fast
i got my laptop without ssd
Imagine hdd booting in 5 secs
and its new
Cold dark to desktop
lmao
How longs the boot
impossible
exactly
That’s probably ssd on my laptop then (new one)
Don’t think the salesman said it was ssd but hey I’m taking it
what laptop is it?
Hp pavilion
Extreme exception
not true
??
i have seen so many laptops with hdd only
In recent years?
even today
Can you link one?
Lmao
yeah
Stores selling laptops without drive/ssd? not common, i cant find anyone in my country
Any currently produced PC should ship with a SSD for the primary drive. (It may be shit, but it's a SSD)
Care to share an example?
No wait
If they're selling old stuff? It could easily be HDD still, but anything current should be SSD
It is ssd, 16 gigs ddr4 ram
@fallow zinc you know model nr?
Uh 15 eh1123au probably
take my laptop as an example
that is option for 2nd drive
i got without an ssd
there still is the main
what
Bro, that laptop is over 5 years old
The specs said it’s ssd with ddr4 16 gigs
oh what
