What're you looking to run on it? If it's nothing too intense, I'd say get an old business thin client PC. Running a linux distro on it with docker containers for your services will get you great performance-per-watt efficiency. Plus it should be silent and barely take up any space. I've got an old lenovo one running my plex server, pihole, and a few other services and it's great.

Realtalk I'm kind of excited for homefabs. There isn't anybody making chips at any kind of scale, but I've seen more and more interest in DIY chip making, and it doesn't seem that far off.

It's going to be based of of 100s+ nm processes that aren't remotely comparable to modern chips, but it's gonna be huge for retro computing. There are so many old proprietary chips that were only ever made by one company for one line of products, and that means the only way to get them when you need them is to cannabalize broken computers (or worse, cannabalize working ones).

It would be so amazing to see a reproduction SID chip especially. It's the legendary Commodore 64 sound chip, that's only found in that machine. It's popular to use chips in different projects, but that necessarily means taking one out of a C64.

3d printing isn't meant to be a replacement for anything, it's meant for rapid prototyping. You could "breadboard" a new transistor idea, and see if it functions IRL before investing in something like true fabbing.

I know what 3D printing is for, I'm a proud Prusa i3 owner. And I absolutely love the idea of prototyping circuits at home, but we've got a while before it becomes a reality and even then the applicability will be limited. Hobbyist CNC milled parts for vintage computers, that's already reality and is much more practical.
