#The Legend of Spyro

It didnt really change my life that way but I wouldnt be here if not because of this series.
Even though TLOS for me hasn't aged the best (at least not the first 2 games), the story was good. There's a lot of great fanfiction out there for those who want a good story based on TLOS. I'll give 2 examples and both are webcomics on DeviantArt:
Destiny Intertwined by DragonofIceandFire: https://www.deviantart.com/dragonoficeandfire/gallery/81582000/destiny-intertwined
From Page 1 of the comic:
"Destiny Intertwined is a comic exploring the largely unknown past of The Legend of Spyro's story. The comic can be enjoyed even if you know nothing about the games."

Excerpt from webcomic.com:
"Pure Light is a The Legend of Spyro fan comic written and illustrated by Xannador, later taken over by Dragonoficeandfire, and currently drawn by Ruscsi .
The story is set a some decades after the end of Dawn of the Dragon, and the world has gone to hell. One year after Malefor's defeat at the hands of Spyro and Cynder, Spyro turned mad. Grievously wounding Cynder, and resurrecting Malefor, he went about creating an endless army of dark dragons, simple pawns existing only to serve the will of their dark masters, and conquered the shattered remains of the world. Now, only Warfang remains. Protected under a massive forcefield, the City of Dragons have become the last haven from the hellish, darker infested wasteland beyond its walls. Despite General Cynder's heroic efforts in hunting down the Dark Masters, however, hope is in short supply, and the Dark Masters need only sit by and wait for the city to tear itself apart from the inside. Meanwhile, a small group of young dragons have found friendship against all odds..."
tLoS is life. I LOVE the world. Games are meh, but the story and the world... Love it
I have written fanfics and quests in the world
Why are the games meh? I loved everything about them. From gameplay to story, music, characters and world.
They just... could have been better. I enjoyed them, but dotd is bug-ridden there is a LOT of cut stuff because they ran out of money
Rushed and not enough money
only because there is a lot of left potential, which the most fans are aware of, it doesnt make the game automatically bad
for what it was it was good enough to be enjoyed
The story and world are great. The lore is just very lacking.
I know a lot more of what it could have been now but when I first played it, damn! That was the most intense game I've ever played at the time.
TEN is intense. The other two were not at that level
I think DOTD has better combat than TEN and ANB. But I agree it suffers from a lot of issues. I for one wish they hadn't redesigned many of the characters so drastically.
I love the dragon design from DOTD, but the controls were a mess, the camera was janky, and the cutscenes were massively oversaturated.
I didn't have a massive issue with controls myself, what console did you play it on? I had mine on 360 and was pretty good.
The designs weren't bad but man the Guardians and Malefor could've been better. Specifically Ignitus. Half the time it looks like he's smiling during cutscenes (especially the one where the Destroyer gets unleashed). Krome Studios may have had limitations with their cutscenes but they at least were able to do emotions far better for the characters.
Yeah. I like the style in DOTD but the cutscenes I think were better with krome studios. However, some of the cutscenes made Spyro look terrible.
Oh for sure
Those cinematics really needed more done for them
Even some of the cutscenes
Overall, the story was great. However, I later found out how much was actually missing from the story and I can only wonder how good it could have gotten.
I am glad at the very least they managed to get most of the original voice cast back on with some exceptions
Gary Oldman, Kevin Michael Richardson, Elijah Wood still do a great job.
Christina Ricci does a decent job as Cynder
Hunter VA was good
Wayne Brady as Sparx was.....ehhhhh
and poor Mark Hamill
PERFECT choice as Malefor
but they distorted his voice WAY too much
The only problem with Cynder is the lack of emotion.
He was perfect buuuuut.... That happened.
but there's a bunch of big moments where it's hard to see the emotion come through with her voice.
Spyro displayed far more emotion and Cynder is really blank in most of them
Though that's really the fault of the people who made the cutscenes
and those who directed her to do the lines
I get what they were going for with Malefor
being this ancient purple dragon and the ultimate evil
But damn, they didn't need to distort his voice at all
or at least tone it down
Mark Hamill's vocal range is so good.
Gameplaywise they were very basic in terms of being a beat-em up. The fact that they made those tutorials mandatory and unskippable also dragged the experience down for me. Cause in the end the additional breaths didn't really add much of anything to the game except for probably just a select few puzzle solving. Combat wise those tutorials didn't even need to exist.
The puzzles were definitely neat though and both the time slow in TEN and the chain in DotD were amazing.
I agree here. I certainly wouldn't enjoy the combat as much as I did when I was younger. Also, you defeat the enemies exactly the same way. Yes you have access to 4 different elements and when fully upgraded you can sweep the entire game easily (electricity allows you to yeet everything off a cliff that isn't a boss) The melee combat whilst fun was incredibly limited. You also fight most of the same enemy types across both ANB and TEN albeit with palette swaps, they don't offer anything interesting beyond that.
Yeah the slow time ability you get across both ANB and TEN was cool but it loses its luster after a while.
DOTD at least improved the combat significantly more with more combinations of attacks you can do.
I do like as well the fact that both Spyro and Cynder had to use their elemental abilities to solve puzzles too including some in order to access secret gems and armour pieces (or even to fight an elite enemy).
In The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, Cynder, voiced by Cree Summer, is the main antagonist but has only a few lines and little screen time. She only fully appears moments before the boss fight against her. Although it is a bit disappointing that the main antagonist has a few lines, there are many unused voice clips of Cynder contained within...
There's a bunch of unused dialogue they had for Cynder in A New Beginning. There's actually some really interesting lines here.
Just to point out, that last line in the video is fake and was put together by the uploader. Poor decision tho, especially when you have a video titled "Unused Voice Lines", and other users think it's actually real
That did sound odd
oh cool
Sounds like she has a different voice than she did in my game :o
That’s still Cree Summer

So much detail planned but not all implemented
True, it's kinda of a shame really.
You can also tell how much emotion was planned for Ignitus's death (including Spyro trying to go back into the fire in an attempt to save his mentor, but dragging Cynder towards it too), but was lost in transition with the voice delivery and stiff character models
Just found this chat, and I relate to this a lot! TLoS is one of my favorite stories all together. Yes there are plenty of flaws in the scripts, and the third game isn’t exactly what I would’ve wanted. But the story is solid, characters are fairly fleshed out, (Cynder in particular stands out from the rest) and the OST’s are criminally underrated by the wider public. It’s an early 2000’s child friendly Dark Fantasy, and I love it!
It’s just a shame the yearly release schedule forced the devs for all three games; Krome and Étranges to scrap tons of content and gameplay variety needed to achieve the immense potential the story has. I’m happy that we got what we have, but you can feel there’s more to this world.
I wonder if it will ever get a remastered
I think ports are all we're gonna get.
I've said it before, will say it again, it's pretty clear they don't like giving LoS attention.
Yeah I don’t see a remake anytime soon
I can see some LOS characters being brought over to the Reignited universe
Independent of the anniversary without realizing it (guess things just lined up funnily enough haha), decided to play TLoS series again for the first time in ages.
Finished A New Beginning so far, and I still had a lot of fun with it. Very nice experience! That menu theme is still captivating, and beautiful. Only thing that had me confused was a lack of these weird laser puzzles to break up the combat since I played the DS version all those years ago not knowing it was exclusive there. Combat was enjoyable, simple, but still could do neat little tricks. I definitely enjoyed my playthrough.
Nice! Did you manage to upgrade and max out all of your elements too?
Also will you play the sequels?
I had maxed out everything I could through the first play through, and dabbled a touch in NG+. Earth’s Triangle input was the only thing I failed to fully upgrade.
And that’s the plan! Right now progressing through Eternal Night, and just unlocked the Earth Element.
For completionist sake went back to ANB to upgrade the Earth Secondary attack to max. Took until a little after Lightning was unlocked originally in Dante’s Freezer.
Nice, you can also absolutely cheese much of the first game with your lightning breath too.
I have now beaten Eternal Night. The addition of collectibles were nice to ensure I kept on my toes looking around. A bigger variance in the breaths was welcomed. With the ability to slow down time it offered some interesting opportunities for encounters. There were some cheesy combos like time slow down into Lightning Vortex, or the Fire Breath for funny DPS due to the way slow down interacted with the meter use. Tried out the first Dragon Challenge. Might get around to more later, or a full 100% completion since missing 13 Feathers, and 3 Green Skulls. Overall I would say I preferred A New Beginning, but still adored my time playing!
I have the same conclusion
The challenge mode you get upon finding all of the feathers is a fun challenge. Beating all 5 challenges nets you a nice reward too.
After having finished, and 100% Eternal Night, it was time to move onto Dawn of the Dragon.
Dawn of the Dragon looked really nice, and a rapid switch up in general gameplay flow took a little bit to get acquired to, but still very enjoyable. Dare I say I think it was my favorite so far. Aside from trying to line up your jump for air comboing after launchers to be a bit awkward since it seemed like most were raised higher than the single jump allowed. Difficulty wise for the fights it wasn't bad at all. I can see the final boss Malefor being a bit of a spike if I hadn't spent time 100% everything. Speaking of spikes though... Elite enemies seemed excessively cranked up in terms of how much damage they could do. It was the only thing that left me shocked considering I was regularly getting 3 shot, sometimes 2 by specific moves.
That 100% by the way was more engaging, and enjoyable than the others so far. The addition of Chapter select meant if I missed a feather in Gaul's castle at the Well of Souls I'm not replaying the whole game again. It also meant I felt fine just playing, and exploring knowing "Meh, if I miss anything I can just take a quick trip through again." Especially with the new way you fly around in the levels. The traversal was so much fun aside from the lack of a charge to help with quick ground movement. A quick drop for flight would've also been nice, the main thing I would do is a strong attack to rapidly lower myself.
Story wise it gets through the beats fast it feels like with how contained it is, but still was one that had time to settle, and make itself a nice experience after having gone through ANB, and EN. The passing of ||Ignitus|| certainly was a moment that left me feeling morose about it. After everything he went through with us as our mentor it felt heartbreaking hearing him say he felt like he didn't do enough for us. Overall a mostly beautiful conclusion to the trilogy, and I'm overjoyed to say I spent the time to beat these games.
I don’t know why but I wasn’t impacted by that death, I think I didn’t realise || he || died lol
Somehow
I’m good at missing plot points
I didn’t even know what the movie ratatouille was about until yesterday, despite watching it several times
I just enjoyed watching the lil rats run around
Well done on 100% TLOS Trilogy and completing DOTD!
The third game is my favourite in spite of my criticisms of it.
Especially in regards to some of the character models in the DOTD art style.
And yeah the Elite Enemies can definitely be a wake up call when you first fight them. But most of them can be absolutely CHEESED. They’re all glass cannons at the least.
The toughest of them can be always brought down by your fury attack when in doubt.
Also, in The Burned Lands, there is a small cave with a Troll/Ogre (whatever those large 4-legged enemies are) and a bunch of Orcs you can fight that will infinitely respawn. Meaning you can level up Spyro and Cynder’s elements there to max before completing the game.
Also @zinc jacinth do you think you will also play the DS version of TLOS DOTD as well?
Probably not, unless you think it’s a substantial enough departure to be worth it. And luckily I never felt a need to grind. Just casually playing with the occasional mission replay to ensure I got everything let me max out each element.
Fair enough, the DS version does play differently with different enemies. The fight with Malefor is very different too. It also features a final 2nd phase where Malefor transforms into a massive version of himself.
Final part of the walkthrough of the DotD for the DS
