I have satisfactory server running as a windows service by following the wiki. To update the server, since I don't have a running command window to gracefully shut it down, it's recommended to type quit in the in game server manager console. The problem is with the server running as a service, it just boots right back up. If I open task manager and stop the service, it force closes the server. Is there a better way to stop the server gracefully and prevent it from booting? I was thinking of a batch script that gracefully shuts down and stops the service, then checks stemcmd for an update before starting the service again, but it doesn't seem like there is a clean way to do all of this yet, correct?

#

I know I could have it just run in a command window instead of a service, but the point of the server was to run it on a headless system and being a service allows for it to start again after an update reboot/crash/power failure

#

Right now the way I have had to update is in the server manager, manually save, quit in the console, then stop the service (witch force quites the server instead of a graceful shutdown) run the steamcmd app update, then start the service again.

short blade
#

Is the service set to Auto start?

round hollow
#

Yes. Isn't that the point of it running as a service? In case if crash or something?

late coral
#

Or just use Linux ๐Ÿคช
Pre-start executes the steamcmd update before starting the dedicated server.

clever idol
#

Linux is my preference for virtualization.

quick mist
#

and mine for actualization

round hollow
#

I would use Linux. I was originally using a docker in unraid for it, but was running into performance issues on my older hardware so I'm now running the server off a spare laptop

clever idol
#

I definitely recommend checking out Pterodactyl. It's basically a wrapper for docker with a nice UI, but runs smoothly.

late coral
#

If I recall correctly, you can add a pre-start directive to a Windows service as well, witch would fix your problem.

#

The how, you need to Google

round hollow
#

Think I'm getting it all figured out with a bat file and some scripts tho.

clever idol
#

Mm.. bat files.

Reminds me of 1994 when I was running Remote Access BBS's on DOS 6.2 and Batch.

round hollow
#

It just makes it easy. Shortcut on the desktop to one click the service to be set to manual, shutdown the server, run updates, set the service back to auto and start up again.

clever idol
#

Iirc, I migrated to Windows 3.1 when it came out, and that's when I fell in love with multitasking

round hollow
#

I would prefer to leave it as a docker on my server, but running alongside Plex and a few other Dockers, my hardware was causing rubber banding in game pretty bad

clever idol
#

You have this running on a Plex server?

#

I would say bandwidth might be a consideration

round hollow
#

I had it running on an unRAID server

clever idol
#

I guess I am not familiar with unRAID

round hollow
#

And bandwidth isn't an issue when it's over lan

late coral
#

Had it running in a Linux VM, ProxmoxVE as hypervisor, on a NUC i5 5250U. Moved the game to a friend's server with a more potent CPU.

round hollow
#

unRAID is like running a JBOD with plugins, VMs, and Dockers.

#

I honestly could probably shutdown my 7 Days to Die server on it and I'm sure satisfactory would run better. I'd obviously like to build a newer more powerful and energy efficient server, but that's not in the budget any time soon unfortunately

tepid imp
#

Is it rubber banding all the time or just during saves?

round hollow
#

It was all the time

#

Granted it was a save with 400+ hours in it, but still. Pretty sure it's my older hardware and the fact that the server for satisfactory is new and not fleshed out much

late coral
#

Had my friend adjust the number of virtual CPUs and increase mem from 4 to 8GB, had a slight issue in the area with 36 refineries, 44 packagers and 100 Fuel Generators ๐Ÿ˜…

round hollow
#

Memory doesn't seem to go above 3-4 the of usage, and it primarily runs off a single core. My issue is I'm running it off a dual xeon x5670 system and those are getting a bit old

tepid imp
#

I've had mine running on a 4770k @ 4.3 its been fine except for hiccups during saves

#

on debian in a docker container

late coral
#

Serialisation during saving is a known cause of the hiccup

tepid imp
#

tickrate floats betwween 24-40 with 1-3 people on 4 brought it to 20

late coral
#

My 1.6Ghz 5250U was running ok, upto the second space alevator launch, that's when the amount of buildings became too much

#

My friend is now running the dedicated server on a Xeon 5xxx CPU as well

tepid imp
#

I tried to run it on my nas with dual 2665s but the 2.6Ghz Clock is just too low.

round hollow
#

It ran great for solo play on that hardware, but the bigger the factory got, it would struggle. I died a lot due to lag causing my vehicle to send me under the map

#

So I moved to a laptop with a i7 7700hk and it runs perfect

late coral
#

The server really prefers high single core clockspeed

round hollow
#

Yup

tepid imp
#

I have a ryzen 2600 thats sitting around but I don't know how it will deal with the IPC imporvment vs clock loss over the 4770, and I dont have a case to keep it in atm.

round hollow
#

I have a spare nib 3400g I was thinking about building a mini itx and run my game servers off that

late coral
#

Last update did include more performance tweaks, and better multi-thread utilisation, so CSS is working on it

round hollow
#

The update out today?

tepid imp
#

I wish I still had my Pentium 3258 Aniversary chip, that thing hit 5.1Ghz only 2 cores but it would be perfect for this.

late coral

#

Hello all. Someone play on a 4netplayer server? since the today update... i can connect, i can move. but when i touch something in my inventory... the game crash instantly ... :/

tepid imp
#

the extra threads on my 4770 are sitting closer to 20% than 10% from before the update, the main thread is still pinned 100%

late coral
#

Even with the 1.6GHz i5 5250U, total CPU performance was not the real problem, just the game maxing out one thread.

tepid imp
#

ya but any additional usage I see on those threads is stuff that was offloaded, that docker container is the only thing running on this Debian Machine.

late coral
#

The game client does the same on my 4790K

#

It's a unreal engine quirk

tepid imp
#

4790K basically the same chip, as my 4770K excluding that my 4770K is the worse binned thing I have ever seen.

Yep

Swapped my i5 4670k for a i7 4790k last year ๐Ÿ˜…

tepid imp
#

I have delidded it put liquid metal on/ tried direct die cooling it. I can get it cold it just wont stay stable over 4.5 with massive over voltage, I have Overlocked my friends chip in my board to 4.9 just didn't win the silicon lottery.

late coral
#

The extra threads do make it perform a lot better

tepid imp
#

that is suprising

#

wait server or client?

late coral
#

Client

tepid imp
#

ya I Immaging the GPU stack is asking for a lot to be done as well.

late coral
#

And with satisfactory probably marginally better, just because of higher clockspeed

#

Some other games I play, like World of Tanks, and World of Warships really do run better with the i7

tepid imp
#

I never had trouble on WoT with my 3570K back when I had it.

late coral
#

But those are quite likely better optimized for multi-core

tepid imp
#

Star citizen is the game that caused that CPU to crumble.

late coral
#

The i7 was a cheap way to extend the life of my gaming rig for another 2 years

#

Making the jump to DDR5 with the next system

tepid imp
#

I got a 3600 super cheap just before 5000 series launched, if I need more than this can give Ill probably just look at a 5800x so I dont need to get DDR5 and a new Motherboard unless the performance jump is spectacular.

hallow night

nova cliff
#

yep - known issue

frosty gale
#

any known fixes

nova cliff
#

wait for CSS to fix it

or rebuild the belt

frosty gale

#

its been happening but not like tha before

#

what about hypertubes killing you half way across the map

burnt coyote
#

lol

#

that happened to me earlier, I think it might be lag from saves and entering the tube at the sametime as a save

modern escarp
#

Hypertubes definitely cause issues during a save.

#

And belts built while saving won't ever work. So if you notice a save happening, stop building belts until it's done.

is there no save game editor that can fix it?

just edited the save game and got rid of all FoliageRemoval, expecting them to be back now

clever idol
#

Quick question: we have auto update enabled and verify files enabled.. but this is the second patch now our server didn't auto-update. is there a way for me to confirm that autoupdate is actually active?

vernal prism
#

Is there a reason for the seperation of branches experimental/early access?

experimental is stuck at 174824 -- EA is now 176027

This is an issue as Nitrado only runs experiemental currently - I have surfaced a ticket with them as well.

It would be different if experiemental actually had "experiemental changes"

clever idol
#

I'm sure there is a reason, but it sounds more like an issue with Nitrado. They should give you the option to chose with branch your dedicated server runs off of

vernal prism
#

I agree: this shift happened this week

oblique owl
#

Experimental does have experimental changes

vernal prism
#

EA client worked with experiemental build until the patche on Wed.

oblique owl
#

Packet routing changes for dedicated servers are only on Experimental

vernal prism
#

hmm...

oblique owl
vernal prism

it was same version until Wed

oblique owl

Before the latest patch, EA and EXP were different versions

vernal prism
#

Sorry yesterday -- this week is a burr

elder crow

Thanks to CSS and the whole crew for that quick fix

vernal prism

Build 175911 broke EA working on Experiemental - thus my ask, it appears more features going into EA than experimental.

elder crow
#

Have a great holiday @ everyone

oblique owl
#

EA and Experimental only "work" when they are the same version

desert bear
vernal prism
#

Uzo - I understand that

clever idol
#

Dedicated Server of Early Access Branch only works with Early Access Client.
Dedicaed Server of Experimental Branch, only works with Experimental Client.

oblique owl
#

EA was 174799, EXP was 174824

clever idol
#

Nitrado should absolutely be able to point their dedicated servers to an appropriate branch.

quartz oar
#

@vernal prism I'm facing the same problem with nitrado rn

clever idol
#

I had to request G-Portal do the same thing, and they did it in less than a day

vernal prism
#

From the outside in - we see "fixes" going into EA which are not reflected on Experimental -

elder crow
#

g-portal is best

#

using their servers for years now

vernal prism
#

I have a ticket with Nitrado where I am asking then to give us the options for dedicated server to choose which build

clever idol
#

G-portal is great until your save file becomes 8MB

#

then it blows up

desert bear
#

8MB... waouh

clever idol
desert bear

What are the specs of the G-portal server ?

vernal prism
#

I have used NItrado for years and never had a problem - this is the first problem I have had with them.

elder crow
#

well, our savegame is only around 2.3mb currently, so we got some time ๐Ÿ˜‰ @clever idol

clever idol
clever idol
#

We've recently had to move off of G-Portal and spin our save file up on a hosted Ubuntu server on Azure running 4CPU's and 16GB of ram.

desert bear
#

hmm ok. Do the ram resources exceed 8GB now with your 8MB backup?

clever idol
#

Last night it did hit 8.4GB.. currently we're hoving around 7.19. Admittedly, we just restarted the server.. and only have 1 player on it currently.

elder crow
#

@clever idol you can ask the support to upgrade the server or give more ressources, we had similar issues with Arma3 once and not even 3hrs after the ticket, it had much more power

vernal prism
#

steam is being a PITA - is there a different steamid for experiemental over ea dedicated server

#

it wont load for me atm to check

clever idol
#

At 2 CPU's, the tick rate was pretty bad.. But at 4 CPU's, it improved the tick rate, and pretty much eliminated rubber banding (except on world save).

elder crow
#

tell the support what the issues is and i am sure they find a solution

#

they have always been really helpful and open to suggestions from my experience

clever idol
#

Yeah I've not had a problem with G-portal. ever

desert bear
clever idol
#

yes, we are at setting 3 for both server and client.

desert bear
#

The save time isn't too long ?

#

20/30 sec. no ?

clever idol
#

2 CPU's, world save was taking around 15 seconds, with a 32 second delay in tick rate (seen from the logging).

4 CPU's, here's the last save that just happened:

[2021.12.17-15.27.19:650][895]LogGame: World Serialization (save): 6.591 seconds

tick rate is down on me server ... but my temp manufacturing factory no longer looks like it has been abandoned in the jungle for the last 1000 years.

#

I'll call it a wash.

clever idol
#

I think what would be helpful is an api message back to the client to indicate that the server is about to do a world save and give a 10 second warning, similar to single player. This would, at a minimum, allow the player to expect some wonkiness for a short period of time..or land.. or get somewhere safe, etc.

desert bear
#

Modify how often the server performs an Autosave with FG.AutosaveInterval console command is another way to dilute this problem

clever idol
#

yeah, we've already set ours to 15 minutes from the default of 5

tepid imp

I have it set to 30 min but it also does not auto pause.

@oblique owl - just for a data point, the previous update 175911 brought back the map in dedicated server clients. In the reversal of update, the map is back to being broken. so something in that code base, while breaking other things like trees, does fix the dedicated server map issue.

Earlier today, I commented that a way that this could be done in a dedicated server/client way is that about 10-15 seconds before the server performs a World Save, that an api message back to the client should be sent that kicks off the "Saving world in 10 seconds" that you see in Single player. That would at least allow the user to pause what they are doing, land somewhere safe, or at least have better expectations of experience.

would be a quick and easy workaround

c'mon steamcmd.. quit being a bugger and update my server >_<

clever idol

hrm. ok. thanks @oblique owl then as a data point, the map was broken prior to 175911, worked in 175911, and now no longer working in 176027.

nova cliff

Removing -beta experimental from the steamcmd arguments should be enough to swap back, right?

next vapor
nova cliff

hrm

#

so -beta public ?

next vapor
#

yeah

clever idol

yup

quick mist

I need to re-add that to the wiki.

Yes, if you had used -beta experimental than you need to explicitly use -beta public to swtich back

When running a dedicated server on Ubuntu setup as a service via systemd ... is a 'systemctl restart satisfactory' command considered a 'graceful' shutdown? asking because that's the only way I have to restart the server for updates... is there a way that server manager could be updated to still connect to the console of older server versions to let people with admin rights be able to run the exit command etc without having to login to the server?

quick mist
#

In my testing, the Linux build does do a graceful shutdown when sent SIGINT, which is what systemctl does

#

but not SIGKILL obviously

#

The devs are planning on adding an API that will allow for an explicit intrinsic graceful shutdown (amongst other things) in the future without needing the full game client at the correct version, but it's probably going to be a while before that happens.

#

All that said: when I do implement changes that need to be written to state files (e. g. FG.NetworkQuality and the like), I will make the change, and then quit in the console to be certain the change gets written

ornate osprey
#

I'm more concerned about the actual program updates... like today at 9 am my time I got a ping in discord for a friend "Hey server needs an update" ... said friend has the server admin console so that he can always do saves as needed but if the client updates before the server, he can't send the 'exit' command in the client to have the server process end, and restart, which would then do the update for him...

quick mist
#

yeah, I know the conundrum well

late coral
#

Ugh, version mismatch

midnight dew
quick mist

the good news is that when players disconnect, the server does a save, so nothing in that respect gets lost

really annoying I can't have the server reset remotely

quick mist
#

"can't" is a strong word.

midnight dew
#

Let me see if I can cause the error message again

#

we were already playing and it booted us out

quick mist
#

testing that address is timing out for me as well

midnight dew
#

Is it to do with the update or something else?

quick mist
#

something else: the server is not responding

#

so that's not a version mismatch; that's a straight-up communication error.

midnight dew
#

Ah, all right. Thanks for the advice so far. Do you have an idea what might be the cause? Or is it unrelated to the game likely?

quick mist
#

likely not related to the game per se unless the game server itself crashed; you'd have to look at the server itself.

spice dawn
#

Hello. I'm trying to setup a dedicated server using steamcmd on Ubuntu. I've installed and launched the server, as well as forwarded the requested ports, but I still can't get a client to connect

quick mist
#

things to check:

  • is the server running
  • is it still listening on the expected UDP ports
  • is the firewall allowing incoming connections on those ports?
  • if there is a router, is it still forwarding those ports?
midnight dew
#

All right, will check those things! Thanks. It booted us very suddenly while we were playing, so I'm curious what it'll have been

spice dawn
#

@quick mist Thanks, I just finished going through that document before joining. I'll go through it again..

It looks to me like it's an issue with my firewall but I can't figure out where.

now if I could come up with a script that would fetch the most recent version from steamcmd

quick mist

I was looking to find the API to get that, but the build IDs in the Steam Depots do not correlate to the actual reported server version, so the best one could do -- once one has a Partner API key, which I don't -- is to detect changes, but not what the new version number is.

There is not currently a known way to trigger that. That will occur every 24 hours of server uptime

that is session reloading by the server

queen wyvern
#

is it still necessary to use the experimental version of the game to connect to the ded servers?

shell cedar
#

No, it depens what version your server is, it has to match with client version. On rented servers it depens how they provide it, dunno if any have option to choose. Self hosted you can choose which to install

queen wyvern
#

well, nitrado has a newer version than steam...

late coral
queen wyvern

only option in the nitrado webinterface is the option to reinstall the game on the server...

#

i can see no option to change the game version

late coral
#

Going by build version, you use the early access client

full vector
#

Experimental is not required, however game version still needs to match the server version exactly. So if nitrado only offers experimental, you also need to use experimental

#

But you could also run a server for the EA version - but of course your host needs to offer that

tepid imp

Stupid question is there a way to pull a server address from my server manager or the command line in game, Switched PC but I don't have the address handy to reconnect.

So what you are saying is the EPIC Launcher version of the Dedicated server is only for the Early Access version. If I want to continue on the Experimental version I canโ€™t use it? The Dedicated Server image has the word โ€˜Experimentalโ€™ right on it. One would think its meant for the Experimental branch.

orchid vault
#

you need to use steamcmd to download exp

#

its not meant for everyone to play on ... it will be testing stuff that breaks things not new content

fluid rapids

I know that, I have been on experimental from the beginning. Itโ€™s Just nice to get the fixes (and new bugs) faster than you do on the early access branch.

@stray kayak don't play on someone's home hosted server. I'm sure some of you have good fiber internet but I'm also sure there are plenty of low end DSL players out there that think hosting a server on that slow of a connection is going to be JUST FINE. orchid vault

empty axle

Is it normal that my server is spamming this?

prime coral
#

This isn't a nitrado issue per say.... It is because they upgraded the server when a new server version came out, the problem is there's only one 'server' and not a split early access server and experimental server.

orchid vault

they updated exp so play with exp

there is only 2 versions of client and server lol

scenic lintel
prime coral

@orchid vault You are incorrect, there are not two types of the dedicated server, which is the issue I am trying to navigate. Specifically I guess trying to figure out how to roll back to the prior version of the server that works with EA

there is 2 clients and 2 servers like i said

if ea client wont match then server is exp or not updated

Unfortunately, Dedicated Server does not support multi-core. There is no way to increase the performance except by using the latest processor with high IPC. Of course, there is no way to avoid performance degradation if there are more than 4 players or if the game save file exceeds 6Mb.

#

Until today, I was running a server where 16 people played games, but when the game save file was over 6Mb, the Tickrate for 16 people at the same time was less than 8, so it was difficult to play normally.

orchid vault
#

servers use multiple cores but mostly load 1 down then expand as needed

#

most of the game is serial work so cant just spread it across cores

scenic lintel
#

M5.xlarge feels p good on a 18gb save file

ivory sage
#

AWS? That's a waste of money. Even if you mobilize the CPU with the latest architecture from AWS, servers with Ryzen 5000 series or Intel 12th generation IPCs are not leased.

scenic lintel
#

Eh reserved instance is around $40/mo, fine for me

#

I like having control over all of it too

ivory sage
#

In other words, if the development team does not update the current dedicated server, it will only intensively use one CPU that has been putting in vCpu as many times as possible.

Does the server benefit more from higher single thread clock or does it take advantage of multi-cores better?

I've noticed after redoing my base, and making it tons bigger, like lots more containers and machines and the rubberbanding has made it hard to play

I can assign more cores to it, but if it won't help, then why bother

orchid vault
#

it can use them but it loads 1 down mostly

devout idol
#

ok

edgy wigeon
#

@stray kayak Are you using the wolveix/satisfactory-server image? I am, and docker stats shows a pretty consistent 150+% CPU usage, which means it's using slightly more than one of the 4 cores of my AMD A10-7700K.

edgy wigeon
#

There could be all manner of compromises made for docker, for all I know - but Valheim showed me just how much docker can trivialize server deployment. Me and a bunch of mates played Valheim for weeks on this server; and mostly - the Satisfactory server has been running OK, but it's pretty rubber-bandy when I'm driving trains.

from little experience i had with satisfactory servers, single core performance > all

the 2 messages you sent are contradictory, you got a message and then it says offline. I've found if I keep my server tab open for a while it'll show up as offline again. You have to click (double click?) and you need to name it and then it'll ask you to create an admin password

split frigate
#

this is what it shows atm, it accepted the server id and port and does nothing after that

split frigate
#

Never mind, I figured it out, for those that run into this issue, the port number in the access block is the wrong port number, don't know why they give it, the actual port number is under server name at the top of the screen right behind the IP.

honest stratus
#

I would be cautious with third party antivirus software. I had McAfee installed on my Windows dedicated server. I went through and allowed all the ports through McAfee's firewall and was still unable to connect. I uninstalled it to test and once it was removed I was able to connect without issue. Just an idea for something to try.
