I tried testing to see if my firewall was blocking any UDP ports and didn't see that it was, but there was a high enough chance I was looking at the wrong things that I decided to open them up anyway
another factor that makes setting up your own game servers annoying is the default equipment ISPs provide. the modem/router combos are garbage
my previous ISP forced me to use their equipment, and it was actually impossible to forward ports properly. I have since moved and am using my own network equipment and forwarding ports took 2 min and works flawlessly. all Unifi gear

So I see this while making the rules in firewall and want to understand what it actually means. Is the local port opening up communications coming inbound to my router from a server and the the remote port opening up communications from my router going outbound to a server?

If you are seeing 7778 pop up, check your command line switches, there was a recent change in the update that changed -GamePort to just -Port, my finding is that if you use -GamePort it increments 7777 to 7778

You can check your install directory here: FactoryGame/Saved/Logs at least on Linux, Windows is in a similar location under the directory you installed the server to.
It's under the user you run the server from here: ~/.config/Epic/FactoryGame/Saved/SaveGames/server

If you use the same session name as the one in singleplayer then it will recognize the save files you have in the server folder as belonging to that session name

Well yes cause U4 does not have the Server Manager UI, when mods work for U5 I could imagine you could hack Dedi to work on U4 and hack U4 client to connect to Dedi but by then U5 might be on stable.

Last night I solved my connection issues by switching my local IP via USB tether to my phone and then switching back to ethernet. I tried that again today, but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know why it might have worked last night so that I can try to replicate it?

VPS means Virtual Private Server
Your VPS machine will have a public facing IP; and you need to open the ports for that VPS
those ports being 7777, 15000, 15777
then you just enter the ip or url for the server
Personally, i use my own domain to redirect to the VPS ip, so I have an easy to remember domain name to use for gaming
you'll be better off renting a server from a GSP
I could alternatively set one up for you on our pterodactyl node
as long as its got enough CPU, RAM and Disk space, i see no issue with running it off of a VPS
less user friendly
unless they're familiar with bash (assuming they're going with the cheapest option - linux) they'll have a hard time setting one up, compared to renting one where there's usually a GUI in the form of a web panel to manage it from

There isnt an error it just wont let me grab my session id. If i click show it just says invalid id where it says hidden. And it is permanently stuck on private. I can click friends only but it just goes back after i leave and come back to it.

you would just edit your start command and add > server.log to the end (might be able to do some stuff with dates/times, but that's the gist of it)

I'm not sure if anyone else has been having this issue, but if you've been running FactoryServer.exe -log -unattended as a batch file to start the server and it gets suck, try adding -nosteam to it after -unattended.
I still don't quite understand why, but every time I do that it works for me. After that process runs you can end connection to the server and start it back up without any issues.

I've tried editing the <InstallDir>/FactoryGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Game.ini file, but it gets overwritten on server launch, even with Read Only permissions
How fast are the internal fixes normally deployed to experimental?
Default limit is 4 players. adding more players is not officially supported.
no clue whatsoever. I know they have nightly builds they use internally, and they were able to drop a hotfix yesterday for an issue related to progression
so my guess would be some time next week at the latest
well on release day there was one hotfix, then two yesterday, so they're working at a pretty good clip

So question about the console output again, when running attended, warnings and errors are yellow and red. tailing the log file is just all white text, anyway to fix this?
My goal is to run the game with systemd service, but monitor the log file (or someway to view the console) in real time to watch for errors

When I actually managed to stay on the server for longer than 1 minute my PC didn't use much RAM at all when running both game and server. I does however throw any player out if it tries to load in the space elevator..
i would like to be able to externally query my server for the info that shows in the game menu. i worked out the query port traffic as it is pretty simple. It only returns the server version then redirects the client to talk to game port + 1. The traffic that then happens on that port is complicated. Does anyone know anything about this communication?

This is how to change the default save file to a custom one, If you dont do this it will keep asking you to make a new world whenever you restart the server

ok so i just updated my server and my client and now i'm gettting the incompatible message people were getting yesterday
Im unable to launch under linux. That and when you don't provide proper syntax to the ip field and hit enter instead of failing out right it will cause the game to crash. Example. I typed just 1 to enter in something to clear the field to get back to the main menu. It accepted and failed due to improper ip4 syntax and now when i try to join my friends game it kills the game and causes a crash bug.
I was getting that this morning, too. Had to add the +force_install_dir in the middle of the update command, like this....

The launcher for steam cmd downloads the stuff from the script and exits. Ive yet to find where it stashes the startup script for server itself. I dumped the download to 2 folders. One of my choosing and one into the steam folder. Steamcmd exists but no folder for it seems to be created.

It at least was responsible for the crash, I think the wipe was G-Portal not saving properly on their end, or at all for that matter. I can't find any autosaves in the logs, just the dismantle crash 😦
my steamcmd server is set up, I can connect from my other PC as a local admin or client from outside IP using my vpn. When my friend tries to connect who is in the UK (I am in the US) he gets a timeout error. Says in his popup error something about actual time 20.2, threshhold 20.0 - Any ideas?

it was the cheesiest thing the hosts were doing - you had to add a user to your friends and join their session to play on a server you rented xD

That's what I figured caused our wipe. We had a server crash, but I think the G-Portal.com user that was required to be in game bugged, and wasn't saving. Also if you died with the HUB parts on your, they respawn to the next player, which would be that Gost.

There is a space there between Steam/ and SatisfactoryDedicatedServer. Apparently someone edited the example on the wiki and it was borked. Use this:

Obviously, feel free to change the install dir but I recommend an absolute path. I also fixed the wiki example.
WIth the dedicated server software finally being on steam, I think gportal will switch asap though.

so it transparently moves the save location somewhere else
Has anyone else noticed trains not tracking on the map once they're too far away? I have this odd behavior where it thinks one of my stations is in the middle of the map (it's not). Once the train is out of visual site, it tells me it's on that phantom station. Eventually it does show up again though.

Couple of things: uploaded an existing save from build 170429 to a server running 170618. Worked pretty well, but all my signs had reset to default 😭 . Also, the trains had some serious difficulties getting up the short hill outside my base at first, and I wasn't hearing any train sounds (eerily quiet). Are these all known issues?

You set your session name to be the same as the save? I believe that’s a thing you need to do as well to have it all line up

are the save files big in size? an in-game "transfer my save" would be epyc down the line.
100MB would be an ungodly save, probably enough to crash the server.

I've got a small-medium sized factory, and it's only like 2MB.
Alright, it would seem G-Portal does in fact have actual dedicated servers now. After wiping our previous saves off the face of the planet, we were able to get the game to authenticate the new server, connect, and properly create a save file. So it would seem it's ok. I will report further after a day or so playing on it. Thanks all for the help and insight! Also, great work Coffee Stain! We started down south, but upon seeing the new Northern Forest, we are moving there. Good luck everyone!
We actually had that feature in a few days before release. It's been disabled cause it had some issues but it's one of the things you'll be able to do with the Mange Saves tab in the ui.

How does saving work on the dedicated server? I know that Valheim will save the game even if no one is connected, which is a pain for taking regular but-only-if-changed backups.

Ah, you want to load a save file. Then you can go in the settings tab and type in the session name from that save file or create a new game and load it once you are connected to that game yourself, from the pause menu -> Load menu

If the server is configured to pause when no one is connected (default mode) then there are no saves generated. If it isn't then you get autosaves at the standard interval.

Had same issue this morning. Ran the update, appeared all up to date, still mismatched. My fix was adding the force_install_ dir into the command, and then it was all happy. Not sure what it was updating, but wasn't the right thing. Here's a cut/paste of my working update command...

You'll run in CPU bottlenecks way before that. UE4's network stack is very CPU hungry and our game is quite big.

Not single threaded, we have a lot of cores but there is a main thread which drives all others so that's how I'd expect it to be. The factory logic for example is threaded.

NAT is irrelevant for the server. That is a client code path that needs to be removed. Ignore it all.

Most games dont support linux for dedicated servers so you almost have to just be windows. It's awesome they support linux though 😉

hi, i have a saved file from local game running on dedicated now. (desert map). when i play local, i can remove plants, and trees and get the items. When i run the saved file on server, plants and trees do not remove... but i get the items. any idea?
Their path is specified in the wiki. If they do not exist you will have to create them. Hopefully someone here can help you find them. Really need to sign out. 🌃

And no I mean Carla, because its 23:50 for me as well in Germany.

How many people you expect that will play if you got a server?

Yeah, I mean 4+ people can easy play on a Server I guess. My Laptop has 32 GB RAm, 2070 and some Intel CPU I forgot which, the Laptop is just "trash" for me, when my PC Breaks 😄

I never encountered any gameserver that require crazy power, most if my Server I host on some Cloud Servers from Hezner that are like 3 € / Month haha. And thats fine
I successfully got a server running on a Intel i5 520m and it was only using 40-50% CPU
Cloud is good if game isn't single thread which some unity once are for some reason

its just super odd some hosting companies want like 14 € / Month for a Satisfactory server that you can host on some Linux Server, if you not plan 100 people lol for like 2$ / Month xD

@noble bear could try using playit.gg (free tunneling service) . I have not tested with Satisfactory Dedicated Server but have used it with astroneer server.
I mean we rent servers out that are Dedicated VPSs and we do charge more than $2 a month for a full Linux deployment but still Satisfactory when its running takes at least 4G just sitting there with no one on it. so $2 a month server? sure if you want it to lagg to the moon and back..

yeah I know were not the cheapest with our 2x6x64 - $19 but they are at least rock solid and you get your own dedicated IP, and FQDN too..

Under Server Manager, you have to add the server you're trying to join. You have to know the IP, there isn't currently a browser for random public servers.

He'll have to set that up on his router. I think the link to the Wiki in the pinned posts on this channel lists info on that. Also make sure he's giving you his external/public IP (shouldn't start with 192.168.x.x).

There are none, hosting support is up to the individual vendors as far as I'm aware.

Yeah,.. I'll be honest.. I reached out Months ago about that.. and I got the answer of go pound sand we don't want offical partners we want to release the game for everyone at the same time... Which I totall get and understand.. I just wanted from a company aspect and a Gamer aspect who enjoys the game wanted to help support the dedicated server development by offering our servers as a sponsorship... what I'd get... a big fat no. Do I still enjoy the game, and am I here still helping were I can you bet.. Mostly because I enjoy the game.

Keep getting a strange problem with dedicated servers... Note: There is a belt there between the segment you can see and the merger. But it only sometimes appear. Anyone any ideas for fixing?
Install the Satisfactory Experimental version. Then you'll see a 'Server Manager' option in the main menu. There you 'Add server' and enter the server's public IP and TCP port nr (15777 or something custom)
There is the potential for desync
I purchased AMP for like $8 and had it up and running pretty quick. Pretty easy to mange and scalable to multiple servers or games.

Well.... "Technically" a RPi4 can run Satisfactory.... but you have to load up ESXi Arm Edition and then build a VM to run it inside... so practical.. NOPE... can it be done... ... Kinda???

im having a issue my server is up and when i add it to the server list in the console of the server it says its accepting but on the game it says it offline (pls @ me or dm)

That’s related to using -GamePort and not -Port
The building is quite tall and it started when the build got to a certain size basically but its not like a "major big build"

Well when you use -GamePort the beacon binds to GamePort+1 it’s a known issue

What if no port variable is used?
Switched from Regular to Experimental only a few hours ago. So, didn't report anything yet.
But noticed a lot of these things..
Also, the belts seem working tho.. even invisible
Then it will still default to the +1, specifying -Port will make the beacon work as expected.
kinda makes it very hard to upgrade them though
