Other people might need a better switch with 1 gbit per port or even better

twin dew
#

So for person wanting 1Gbit/s, the included thingie works fine.

visual tree
#

It reminds me of that 2 way ethernet splitter which cuts your speed to 100 mbit's but the one on image is some sketchy type of switch

#

I would like to know how it was wired

twin dew
#

Those were/are just passive adapters that wire the second port to the unused pairs.
This is active device with switch in it.

visual tree
#

Yeah, probably

#

First time I am seeing a switch that looks like a splitter

twin dew
#

So that main device port is probably 10Gbit/s.
The thingie is 4-port 1Gbit/s switch with extra electronics to bypass the switch for one device only use.
With probably passive non-standard PoE power.

#

Because that device side port looks like standard ethernet jack.
And anything else would need that 24+ pins (3x 8) to even support three ports at 1Gbit/s.

cyan crescent
#

Is there an AM5 motherboard where all or most of the connectors are right angle?

warm jay
cyan crescent
#

Yes. 1300 last i checked

warm jay
#

still less expensive than most 64gb ram kit

cyan crescent
#

Ugh. That mb may actually be what i need to do what i want but its so expensive. I have a spare 7900xtx lying around that i want to use but im running into either physical placement issues or pcie electrical connection issues(as in connecting only via x4 or x1)

cyan crescent
#

For rendering and ai stuff. Not gaming

warm jay
#

maybe riser could help you, or motherboard with connection on the back

cyan crescent
#

I dont have a vertical slot

#

Most other motherboards only have 1 slot capable of x8 or higher so the second gpu would be restricted to x1 or x4. Thats if it even fits. Most mb have the first slot as an m.2 slot with the next 4 slots dedicated to 1 x16 slot. So if the second gpu is placed in the lower 2 slots, the usb 2.0, audio and other connections get in the way

warm jay
#

asrock AM5 board dont line share between nvme and PCI, and if two gpu are used theyr at 8x. but some got burned cpu.

#

at least the X870E taichi do

cyan crescent
#

Well i may look into it later either the godlike or taichi. Not saying im getting it but look closer at it.

warm jay
#

i use 3 nvme on the taichi, and still have x16 on gpu. i know the msi carbon line share, and most other brand are pretty bad. i dont remember line sharing being a problem prior to am5

cyan crescent
#

Lane sharing isnt the issue im looking at. Its that all the other pcie slots are wired physically for x4 or less.

#

At least from what ive seen

warm jay
#

the taichi use a spitter and both run at x8 if you use two GPU, but i think that both x16 are actually x16 electrically.

#

you only have them tho, not much more to do with it

cyan crescent
#

Im fine with x8 as i dont think a 7900xtx would saturate the connection in most work loads or gaming but correct me if im wrong

warm jay
#

i dont think so. used a 4070 on x8 and didnt had bad score on benchmark. not used in IA tho

#

if memory bandwith is important maybe, but youll probably lose less than 10%. im pretty sure hardware unboxed tried this pcie 5.0 vs 4.0 vs 3.0

#

pci 3.0 x16 is pci 4.0 x8

cyan crescent
#

I also have a 2080ti collecting dust

#

I think thats 3.0

#

If a pcie 3.0 x16 device is connected to a 4.0 x16 slot, does it still use 16 lanes or what?

warm jay
#

i think so, cuz the card will not use full 4.0 bandwidth and still need the X16, but at 3.0 speed

cyan crescent
#

Thats kinda what i was thinking. Had someone tell me it would only use 8 4.0 lanes.

warm jay
#

if the card is 3.0, it will stay at 3.0 speed. if used on pcie 4.0 x8 you will get pcie 3.0 x8 speed.

#

would be fire if it wasn't the case. a 1080ti would only need pcie 5.0 x4 for full bandwith, and would work perfectly on x2

cyan crescent
#

They should make it a thing

warm jay
#

worst i ever did is use a 1070 ti on a pcie 4.0 x2. as the card is pcie 3.0, it was technically at pcie 4.0 x1 speed. somehow it worked, but badly. maybe 40% of the normal performance

#

msi b650 tomahawk wifi second x16 slot is electrically x2. thats what i did learn

cyan crescent
#

Thats why im looking so closely at how its electrically connected

warm jay
#

i wanted to mess with using intel + nvidia at the same time. and it does work somehow

warm jay
#

and on *. its really annoying

tribal kraken
#

Asus X870E Crosshair can also run dual 8x GPU, but then some of the m.2 cant be used

warm jay
#

i think the taichi is less expensive and don't line share

#

the asrock nova also dont line share if i recall properly. its less expensive. but im not sure about the pcie x16 electronically

tribal kraken
#

Yeah Taichi is cheaper by 200-300€ for me, but also it only supports Gen5 NVME in one slot only, Asus allows more configurations. If dropping single GPU to 8X, you can run 3pcs. Gen5 NVME x4 lanes

warm jay
#

depend on the person and goal. actually 3 nvme at pci 5.0 x 4 is really good. i personally prefer maxing gpu. if you use two gpus, you reduce the number of nvme you can use. or reduce the gpu bandwith when using more nvme. i prefer 1 nvme at 5.0 speed and 3 at 4.0. but thats personal.

#

i did think alot about those two when i chose my motherboard. but price + line sharing got me taichi

tribal kraken
#

Sure, lot of options on them

warm jay
#
  • i had a very good offer on it
#

it came with a scratch on the nvme shield under the gpu. and i bought it 350 because of it

#

but the crosshair screen is really cool

tribal kraken
#

My gaming pc with X870E Hero has RTX5090 @16x. And Samsung 9100 pro Gen5 on the main m.2 slot, and then 2 pcs. Gen4 NVMEs on the m.2 slots that can be used without dropping GPU to 8x.

warm jay
#

rock solid build

#

i use 3 samsung pro 990 2tb, 4070 super ti and r9 7900x. got good deals on them

And they have the nerve to call out customers if they dare to download pirated software lol

Wish I could download nvidia GPU illegaly hehe

Hope it's not going to be self-driving caterpillar because it's not fun being run over by a construction vehicle weighting tons hehe

#

Largest one I found online

tribal kraken
#

It probably will. Excatly those large mining trucks. Komatsu already has them in production use

visual tree
#

They can carry 400 tons

tribal kraken
#

Also autonomous drive is really common underground

visual tree
#

Brings me memories of Mr. Nice guy movie with a giant mining truck like the image above

tribal kraken
#

Yeah visibility is not so great from them, even with cameras. I need regularly to visit mines where they operate that style of haul trucks. Always have to give them way when driving smaller cars same area.

#

Currently designing a bucket for a 200t Hitachi Excavator that loads blasted rock to smaller Komatsu 605 (64t payload) haul trucks.

bronze jasper
#

being run over by one of those might not be fun, but they don't drive on regular roads. They're only in big mines and other projects that need massive amounts of material moved. It's probably a good idea to not walk where they operate

Never used n8n before but from what I understand it's been around since way before AI

#

And when I read about those CVEs I didn't think any were actually related to AI?

#

Something about improper sandboxing

bronze jasper
#

also, the cves' are from the company n8n disclosing their own vulnerabilities after they were fixed. Most companies do this. It's called responsible disclosure.

I'm not sure why anyone would get mad at them for that. Seems like Low Level is a yellow journalism youtuber that misrepresents facts.

#

yeah i've watched through the whole video at 1.5x. none of the vulnerabilities are about AI itself. Just standard vulnerabilities that can happen to any software.

mental oriole
#

I watched it.
He sureley did get confused about the AI platform because it seems to be their latest addition.

bronze jasper
#

Gonna go ahead and qualify this as a big nothing burger

mental oriole
#

Pretty much.

#

Basically what I got out of it, sandboxing is hard.

bronze jasper
mental oriole
#

Yee which is the most important either way.

mental oriole
bronze jasper
#

I seen him reading someone else's breakdown of the sandbox CVE... and he says "I can't tell if this is just ai slop" before he reads it. .... It's clearly not slop and is technical information that is verifiable by someone who knows.

Why is this guy calling himself low level tech if he can't read commented code?

mental oriole
#

The channel used to be called low level programming. Which was a better name when he actually did do code samples in a low level way.

#

Sadly I feel he is getting more clickbaity.

bronze jasper
#

Annoying trends along side of craming AI features into every place where they don't bellong. Also in the bunch is blaming AI for everything.

mental oriole
#

Pretty much. Shove AI down your throat until you can't handle it. And then shove some more down.
I can't wait to cheer when the bubble finally bursts.

bronze jasper
#

there'll be AI after the bubble bursting. And just like the dotcom bubble bursting, there won't be one moment. It'll be seen as giants like lycos, yahoo, alta vista, ask jeeves, all falling one at a time. As new giants rise to take their places

pure karma
#

open ai is on the road to bankruptcy by 2027 aledgedly but i dident check how thue that was just saw it in passing

bronze jasper

same with google and youtube

microsoft is probably the company thats the most due to face reality that all there products suck and few people use them willingfully

bronze jasper
#

Microsoft has a ton of cash and aren't going anywhere. They could lose money for the next decade and be fine

#

If they go bankrupt, it'll be down the road a little further and long past any ai bubble

#

I'm thinking X will be one of the giants to fall

pure karma
#

i almost dont want it too just because its at the very least keeping the stupid people at bay

night girder

Found it.

#

Threads slowly taking over X in daily active users.

bronze jasper
#

Meta could fall too, but yeah. I would say half of both those platforms, at least, are bots

night girder
#

Mhm, yeah it's a mix of a few things going on the same time for X losing popularity.

#

For Meta, I don't know. They seem to be doing fine.

#

They have whatsapp. Facebook. Their meta verse, which I think failed? Than their VR glasses etc.

#

Instagram is also from Meta. So they have a wide portfolio to cash on.

#

X is a bit fucked on that front 🤣

bronze jasper
#

oh true. i'm just talking long term. Meta are part of the AI bubble. It's Zuck's biggest bet yet.

visual tree
#

Recently read they started firing people working on metaverse

bronze jasper
#

they got meta.ai as the chatbot and are integrating it into all their services

visual tree
#

Guess they can change their name back to Facebook since metaverse has failed expectations hehe

night girder

Because whatever we think, it's not a bubble.

That don't know the distinction between dreaming, fantasizing vs reality.

bronze jasper
#

night girder

I understand Mark having a view of the future (VR, AI, ...)

But you can't force that future, it will not end well if they do.

Really need to buy this book asap since I love cyberpunk

It's better to guide people to the future, than to force 😉

bronze jasper

visual tree
#

I think Apple is making Neuromancer series too

bronze jasper
#

Apple TV has kickass science fiction tbh

night girder
#

I am still Dune hooked tbh. Just love the whole computer wars and the consequences in that universe 🤣

bronze jasper
#

I'm so mad at SyFy channel for cancelling so many good shows with a lot of potential. But to their credit, they made some kickass Dune miniseries. Dune and Children of Dune

visual tree
#

I love matrix trilogy except Matrix 4 which was a huge disappointment

night girder
#

I saw a dune series once, very old and euhm ... it wasn't very good 🤣

night girder
bronze jasper
visual tree
#

They should have stopped at Matrix 3 tbh. Matrix 4 just ruined everything

night girder
#

4 wasn't even based on source material was it?

visual tree
#

Can't believe I wasted money on IMAX 4DX for Matrix 4

bronze jasper
#

They shoulda stopped at 1. after 1, any kind of real story they were trying to tell ended. It was just super fun CGI and choreography

night girder
#

so what can go wrong 🤷‍♂️

night girder
#

And edgy AF with all the leather clothes 🤣

visual tree
#

Matrix is based on animatrix btw

bronze jasper
night girder
#

Oh, I though there was books.

bronze jasper
#

animatrix came after matrix

night girder
#

It's still possible the The Wachowskis got ordered for a triology.

#

and didn't expect a 4th to be ordered by hollywood.

visual tree
night girder
#

And holywood loves to milk things that worked before instead of creating new things.

visual tree
#

Thought it was animatrix first

bronze jasper
#

I'm pretty sure Lana Wachowski wrote 4 not to extend the lore of the Matrix, but to do a lot of commentary about the business

#

and WB was like "hell yeah we'll fund another matrix movie"

night girder
#

I still thhink first one was most interesting. The viewer was still in the dark. It had cool scenes. Red pill. Blue pill.

visual tree
bronze jasper
#

First one is a treasure

night girder
#

Honestly, I cannot remember much memorable from 2 and 3. Just giant robots and human batteries.

#

Some sort of revolt.

bronze jasper
night girder
#

And Neo taken away by the robots at the end when he "died?" or something.

#

While for example, lord of the rings, I know all 3 movies pretty well. Because they were all amazing 😄

#

The hobbit was shit though. They tried turning 1 book into 3 movies. Recipe for disaster.

bronze jasper
#

One thing the Matrix did was a proper trailer. No other movie has ever executed a trailer like that. Showing neo do the whole bullet time thing then being like "what is the matrix?"

then no other information at all. no scenes from the real world. no "we are batteries" revelations. Just a question. Simple trailer. That opening night showing was so kick ass. the whole audience went "Whaaaaaaaaaaaat"

#

My two cents.

bronze jasper
#

Like i said, i don't think Lana wrote it to extend the lore of the matrix world. It's more like her commentary on the creative business than a real part 4

#

"i dont like how old properties are ressurected all the time" yup

#

Did you ever see Sense8? That was a trippy show from them. Netflix cancelled it but they had some good seasons first

night girder
#

Fair, I am just very skeptic to hollywood stuff.

bronze jasper
#

its a little provacative

night girder
#

Yes, I think so.

#

On further investigation. No I haven't watched it 😛

#

I am not sure. There was so many shows around that time all doing the same.

#

Heroes or something? the 100 or something?

bronze jasper
#

there's people called sense8s . 8 people anywhere on the planet, but all 8 of them are the same mind/person and they're slowly waking up to that

night girder
#

Sounds so familiar.

#

Does it end on an airplane? Probably another show.

bronze jasper
#

the writing. I appreciate how the wachowskis do things

night girder
#

Oh, it's also from wachowskis. Interesting

bronze jasper
#

I think Lana is primarily the writer of the two

night girder
#

I wonder who Lana is 😄 🤣 🤘

bronze jasper
#

lol thats at the unreal 5 event they did. that was a fun tech demo. wish it was easy to load on pc

night girder
#

Her pink dreadlocks are pretty amazing.

bronze jasper
#

yeah those are well crafted

night girder
#

she looks like a character from her own universe

#

which makes sense 😄

#

I always loved the goth/metal vibe in the matrix.

bronze jasper

#

they leaned into the common themes of that time a little too hard, but it was a blast while it lasted. if they had been a little less heavy handed on those thematic points it likely would've been able to finish properly. absolutely worth watching

And the ad revenue is also going to be interesting. How do you know how many people have seen an ad, or how many AI/bots "viewed" it.

Well, this is just stupid:
My main router gets IPv6 address via 6rd on DHCPv4.
It uses Prefix delegation to share IPv6 addresses to machines via RA.
VM has VF network adapter assigned to it and gets IPv6 via that RA.
VM runs nspawn containers.
I configured NetworkD on that VM to use static block of IPv6 from fc00::/64 to share via RA to the containers.
And NAT66 so they can access internet via IPv6 without having actually valid IPv6 addresses.

Man, researching things is nearly impossible nowadays it seems. Search results are polluted and overrun with a proliferation of slop sites siting fabricated data with broken links and bogus statistics. When you find a "legitimate" site like Forbes, they can't even properly abbreviate a unit correctly(internet speeds in Mbsp, anyone). Whitepapers are held hostage by journals and essentially no information you find is verifiable.

#

Followed a big train of citations from a lot of serious-looking resources back to a Forbes article that's just a listicle with referral links to a bunch of internet providers and no sources.

pure karma

because people dont check sources when doing research anymore

so no one holds them acountable

pure karma
#

thats the whole goal is it not?

to obfuscate evidence

use the lack of evidence as evidence of them being guilty or faul play possibly going on on the behalf of the providers maybe biassing news

i dont know how people trip over windows so hard this way. i've been using w11 since jan 2023. i've never seen any of this shit.

I think Microsoft likes to push features to select few test subjects. Or even to a selected country for legal reasons.

#

So it's possible people around the world see ads, or "new" features others don't see, as part of a test from a company to measure how well it would be received.

bronze jasper
#

this isn't windows pushing an ad either. it's the notification panel working as intended. Edge is using it to ask if they want a website pinned as a start menu app.

night girder
#

And then it's possible people download beta version or something.

bronze jasper

any app can use the notification center

night girder

I think I am just weird. But I really get annoyed with all these distractions on my systems. Pop-ups. Pop-ups. Pop-ups.

bronze jasper

probably a territory thing. they've lobbied it's legality in the usa but other countries maybe not so much

night girder

"Do you want to set this as your default audio device?"
Me: "No, fuck off. Why would I want that? And if I want that. I know where the settings are."

bronze jasper
night girder
#

That's the way. You have to be quick and nuke stuff so windows keeps being "ok" (not good, but ok). My opinion.

bronze jasper
#

from orbit. it's the only way to be sure.

night girder
#

Untill the day, they put command prompts etc behind a paywall, we can do this 🤣

bronze jasper
#

if you spend the extra $3 to a key reseller for a pro license, you can use group policy too

night girder
#

That would be scary right? If they limit our control over our systems more and more to the point we can barely configure it anymore like we want too.
It was the one thing it always made me love computers, the options we have. Configuration and flexibility.

#

It's also why I drifted away from consoles. I missed the flexibility.

bronze jasper
#

yeah if admin ever gets infringed upon in a significant way, i'll migrate to linux completely. i've done a few tours on the linux side of things already. it's not unfamiliar to me at all. they'll never take that

night girder
#

and before anyone thinks I am paranoid.

#

There is a reason why I bring this up, because I've seen the news from Microsoft over the years.

#

And it seems they are going towards that goal. Limiting our options more and more.

#

The "removal" of oobe\bypassnro command. Which isn't removed. But is removed.
The command itself is gone (if I remember Baldur correctly).
But the script is still on the system. hehe

bronze jasper
#

i've seen rabble about it for years too but i've never seen microsoft actually do anything to cut off access to system administration.

were we to see something like that, it'd look like IOS. They kind of went that way with UWP, but less closed off. UWP was never cutting off system administration either.

I actually respect UWP a lot and think it's a great direction. If i understand flatpak sandboxes correctly, it's sort of the same idea.

night girder
#

So an attempt to force more people to make online accounts.

bronze jasper
#

UWP never replaced win32 either. It works along side it very well

night girder
#

And once US is pissed off at you, they can disable your access to your own computer.

#

Why the fuck would I want that 🤣

bronze jasper
night girder
#

but for some reason, whenever I try using the oobe\bypassnro keeps working when I try it.

#

Did it 2-3 times last year.

night girder
#

Because Microsoft is literally saying they don't want local accounts anymore afaik.

#

Local-only commands removal: We are removing known mechanisms for creating a local account in the Windows Setup experience (OOBE). While these mechanisms were often used to bypass Microsoft account setup, they also inadvertently skip critical setup screens, potentially causing users to exit OOBE with a device that is not fully configured for use. Users will need to complete OOBE with internet and a Microsoft account, to ensure device is setup correctly.

#

That's their argument hehe

jagged snow
night girder
#

or without internet access.

#

Because that's the real dick move. If you don't have internet. Your fucked.

bronze jasper
night girder
#

Well, I posted communication from microsoft itself. So we are not making this up. Again, so many things can be going on here.

#

And I installed 3-5 computers last year. NON of them allowed me to make account locally.

#

Without the command. Every single installation demanded me to have online account.

bronze jasper
#

the "and a microsoft account" sounds more strict than it actually is. my recent personal experience does not reflect a removal of non microsoft accounts. enterprise users would hate this

night girder
#

I mean, however I look at it.

#

Removing a command isn't giving users more flexibility.

#

It's reducing options, reducing flexibility.

#

If there was a button, create local account, non of this shit was needed in the first place.

#

The fact the whole internet uses that command is for a reason 🤣

bronze jasper
#

UAC reduces flexibility. Objectively was a good thing.

night girder
#

The fact Microsoft deems it neccesary to remove it, is because they know how many people do it.

#

Else why remove a command nobody uses or knows about? Sounds like wasted development money.

bronze jasper
#

They probably know how many people do it then a bunch of windows is left unconfigured for the system it's running on and jank persists

night girder
#

The skip screens is just bullshit from Microsoft.

#

I would almost call it a blatant lie trying to cover the real reason they remove it.

bronze jasper
#

and then people get mad at them for breaking windows, when they had this perfect little setup app that was intended to do it all properly that was force exit'd

night girder
#

They want people to have online accounts. Simple.

#

Our data is their money.

bronze jasper
#

I mean, thats how i set up a local account. I pressed skip.

It's like, you keep telling me i didn't do it when i know i did

pure karma
#

yea but you cant do that anymore

night girder
#

Nah. Not thinking you are lying either.

#

Like I said, no clue what is going on. Can be so many things.

pure karma

But it sounds like you don't believe us either 😉

bronze jasper
night girder
#

But I am happy for you, you open laptop, connect to internet, press "skip online account" and it let you make local accoutn good for you.

#

But my experience last year was that obee/bypassnro command for installation 🤷‍♂️

#

So there is no discussion. We all have our experiences 😄

#

Maybe laptop is old (in stock and it let you still make local accounts). Maybe your country has a law that forbids "only online accounts". I really don't know.

#

I don't understand why some people think every windows installation is the same.

#

The fact there is bussiness, profressional and other versions. Then legal laws for countries etc.

if not, it might work, depending on your iso

Sorry for the really late reply I got sidetracked and forgot about this question.

Windows update just updates when I ask it to or it tells me to. I just did it again and it tells me everything is up to date.

I tried installing a DDU, but when I'd go to set it up and get logged into safe mode, my PC locks asking for the bit locker. Now I do know how to go about finding my bit locker, that's not the issue. The issue is, it's extremely inconvenient so I decided to attempt to clean install direct from the website, and that is working, so I won't bother with installing a DDU for the sole purpose of keeping my GPU drivers updated automatically.

I was just curious as to what would stop it from working other than Microsoft having an unknown soft lock on third party software EVEN though MCSFT and NVDA are partnered.

So, put of date core software seams likely. I'll probably not chase this any further if that's the answer as my laptop continues to play games well at decent settings as it is now.

Thank you!

twin dew

#

And the point of that from MS eyes is to protect your data if your laptop gets stolen.

#

Just that they do that for everyone, without asking...

#

It can be turned off in Settings.

#

And yes, as SharklienX said, DDU is not needed to keep drivers updated.
It is for cases when driver has broken down, not for every update.

jagged snow
#

(I suggested ddu because nvidia auto update wasn't working on their system)

twin dew
#

Yeah, that is case when driver is broken.

torpid saffron
#

I'm aware, and I did not know you could run DDU out of safe mode.

My whole initial problem was, due to the forced update, older games that I was playing would no longer launch, so I tried to do the backdate but it wouldn't let me, and suddenly I was having GPU driver errors and that's when I found out the Nvidia app would fail to update. Like I previously said I found another way to make it happen, and it works and is far more efficient than the app.

#

This machine is a retail machine, I'm it's 2nd owner and likely on its last legs lol. A month ago I tore it apart and resoldered connections and replaced a heatsink.

I'm currently saving for a new build that I'll do myself.

#

So it's software and firmwares don't need to be 100%, just "good enough" lol.

I was merely curious as to what would cause the error in the first place.

twin dew
#

The Nvidia driver issue?
Or needing recovery key for drive encryption?

For second, Windows 11 automatically encrypts drives with BitLockers home version.
And if using MS account to log into the computer, enables TPM attestation and stores that recovery key into the MS account in cloud.
And that TPM will then store the primary key, and only release it for use if the bootloader hasn't changed.
The way that DDU boots into safe mode makes permanent change into that bootloader, which it reverts once in safe-mode and DDU runs again. Which makes it dangerous method for multiple reasons.

#

So bootloader will get changed, so the TPM will not release the bitlocker primary key, and Windows will ask for recovery key to be able to decrypt the drive for continuing to boot.

#

That whole drive encryption can be permanently turned off in Settings, Privacy & Security, Device Encryption.

glossy glacier
#

No, modifying the bootloader does not make sense.
A modifies bootloader would have a different signature which would make secure Boot freak, not the TPM

twin dew
#

And DDU uses it, and that is just stupid.
It should just trigger boot into the recovery options with instructions what to select.

#

Which can be done as one-time reboot command.

#

Changing default BCD options is changing the basic boot loader behavior, even if the actual code of the bootloader didn't change.
Still part of that boot attestation.

#

Where that shift-reboot or like set temporary UEFI side option on how to boot next time.
And if that triggers that recovery key prompt, you can just reboot again and get into normal Windows.
Same if your monitor couldn't sync to 640x480 resolution of safe mode.
No need to try to login blind for DDU to revert that permanent msconfig/BCD boot option.
Or even worse, if you manually used msconfig, then you will need to try to find another monitor that works at low resolutions.

#

That TPM attestation happens once the bootloader has loaded and configured itself for OS loading.

glossy glacier
#

hm, fair, that's not good behaviour
Although selecting the correct option on startup is probably too much to ask for the average user so I can see why they did it

twin dew
#

And in theory you should be able to set that next boot to happen direct to that number selections menu.
Just AFAIK no already existing main Windows side utility to do that.

#

Inbuilt one I mean.

wanton orchid
# glossy glacier Does DDU not use the msconfig start options? Actually changing the bootloader w...

The tpm attestation have multiple points of measurement
windows call it literally "measured boot procedure" in some tools iirc
part of it is configurable in group policies
it has at least 7 point of measure
some of which are platform dependents
iirc basic ones are :

  • CPU and Chipset config
  • executed Firmware signature context
  • Motherboard hardware config
  • Other hardware listing and firmwares
  • Assessed boot chain
  • RAM loaded drivers and tables
  • Case Intrusion state
  • TPM state logs
#

if everything is enabled, it locks for basically any event that remotely have a hardware impact

twin dew
#

And it cannot say what was changed, just that something was in the specific subset.
And in this case the bootloader config changes, which can be anything from non-issue to attempt to completely replace the whole bootloader.

#

This is just another case why not to go for apple or microsoft for your OS.

#

But Linux. Whatever you do on Linux, should in theory, be totally under your control.

#

And you never have to think "What is in it for Linux?"

#

Which I question with every move Apple and Windows do. "What is in it for them?"

sharp matrix
night girder
#

Yeah, for now it seems we are slowly waking up. Including me. I still got Apple and Microsoft.

sharp matrix

and when security is needed, windows is increasingly becoming simply a non-viable option, keys being stored on servers, to much data being sent to servers aka windows 11, etc

night girder

Privacy nightmare. And I just really dislike they take away control over my system.

#

Simple example; MS pushes updates so hard now. Because we need to have secured devices.

#

But I don't believe that at all.

I think they just want to have more control over our systems. If they make a change, they want to be sure that changed is pulled in by the systems.
If systems auto update constantly, you have more contrrol etc.

sharp matrix
night girder
#

I just want control. If I don't like to see a certain message pop up every day on my system, I want to be able to disable it.

  • Music starts playing way slower than intended.
  • If I scroll fast through my library, I end up scrolling into infinite void, nothing in the list, just all empty, but it let's me keep scroll down.
  • Searching sometimes don't show everything. Like I can search for Bob Dylan and sometimes it only shows 1 album while I have more.
  • And lastly, somethimes the album covers wont load visually, or they have glitches in them, parts missing, and scrolling up and down can fix that.

It is only meant to protect against stolen devices.

Apple too gives out the keys to law enforcement with warrant if they have them.
If you have enabled backup methods that store those to your Apple Account or like.

Or any cloud backups they have of your devices, as those aren't end-to-end encrypted either.

Or otherwise unlock phones that Apple didn't already have keys for, with bespoke newly developed firmware hacks that Apple could install on phones, but no-one else can.

#

Difference between giving stuff Apple already has.
And being forced to hack into device law enforcement want them to.

#

Apple is perfectly willing to give stuff they have, that the device owner has given them (un)intentionally via using Apples cloud stuff.
But not being forced to bypass their implemented stuff on devices that they don't have the keys etc. already via that cloud stuff usage.

#

At least one of those was FBI trying to Apple give them firmware version they could install on any phone, that didn't have limiters against password input attempts. Neither time between attempts or how many times you can try before the device bricks itself.

#

US law enforcement doesn't like actually getting those actual proper warrants to try to get stuff from Apple, they want backdoors they can just use whenever without further Apple or court involvement.

#

So attempts to use that All Writs Act to force Apple to give them that, instead of normal warrants on case by case basis.

Hype can lead to more investments.

visual tree

Pandora Tomorrow ❤️

night girder
#

So you can go to the kitchen, one teammate opens up a wall to start shooting into the kitchen and others breach the door for example.

#

And as a defender, you are paranoid AF because the enemy can come from anywhere (if the room above you isn't protected, they can shotgun a whole in the floor and drop into your kitchen), but that's why you have cameras that can ride around (unless you get spotted and they shoot your camera).

#

So both sides have tools, to make tactical descisions, making it, in my book, a good tactical shooter.

twin dew
#

But even on that, Ubisoft should have changed the name after last Rainbow Six 3 expansion.
Rainbox Six: Vegas and onwards have basically nothing to do with the first three games.

night girder
#

Rainbow Six is rooted in the universe imo.

#

It has the same tactical vibe from previous ranbow six.

#

You have riot shields to protect you against bullets (if you want).

#

Flashbangs, camera droids, all the fun stuff a SWAT team might have.

#

And the idea was a singleplayer.

#

But Ubisoft cut that and pushed game out the door as multiplayer and got lucky. It worked (they got away with it?)

twin dew
#

With some "tactical" elements over then current other ones.

night girder
#

Ah, sorry Baldur. I started with Vegas actually.

night girder
#

But still, the squad is your team now. You need to work together. Especially in e-sport.

twin dew
#

You plotted the advancement on wireframe map first, for all the squads, with various commands and synchronization options.
Then executed.
You could do the thing where you didn't do anything during the actual execution phase if you wanted.

#

And the squads and AI soldiers just completed the missions by themselves following the plan.

night girder
#

Also, Rainbow Six is from Tom Clancy no?

#

Why does it have the Tom Clancy name 🤔

#

because that's a writer.

twin dew
#

Rainbow Six is a techno-thriller novel written by Tom Clancy and released on August 3, 1998. It is the second book to primarily focus on John Clark, one of the recurring characters in the Ryanverse, after Without Remorse (1993); it also features his son-in-law, Domingo "Ding" Chavez. Rainbow Six follows "Rainbow", a secret international countert...

night girder
#

So yeah, they can keep calling it.

twin dew
#

The original world-wide special operations group in the original games was from that novel.

#

That was basically the only connection.

night girder
#

Although, I don't know what the link is between tom clancyu novel and the game besides "tactical". But so many games have swat and tactical aspect to it.

night girder
twin dew
#

The titular "Rainbox Six"

#

Ah, sorry, "Rainbow", with "Rainbox Six" being the leaders codename.

bronze jasper

splinter cell is another tom clancy property. most of the novels are written by other authors though.

night girder
#

I really enjoyed splinter cell 😕

#

Always wondered why they didn't make a new game out of that. Been a while.

#

I would play a good splinter cell. Sneaking around in the dark. Or on pipes on the ceiling.

bronze jasper
#

i think they've tried and they flopped

twin dew
#

They kept moving them closer and closer to just basic FPS again, with worse and worse plots etc.

bronze jasper
#

the old splinter cell games are some of my favorite stealth games

night girder
#

That's sad, it was a good stealth shooter imo.

night girder
twin dew
#

And the playership went down and down and down as they milked the name dry.

#

With constantly worse games than the previous.

night girder
#

So stupid. The whole thing was stealth. And the usage of gadgets.

#

And then you shoot that one guard that is in the way 😛

#

they did make a anime a while ago, so I had hope.

twin dew
#

Basically Exec level wanting to make the franchise move to wider audience.
Not catching that, and alienating the original audience.

#

With Rainbow Six, they got the new audience.
But none of my friends can tolerate the newer games after 3.
And we played lot of the earlier ones, both solo and in MP.

night girder
#

Ok, I think it was fun. Played tons of it (rainbox six multiplayer)

twin dew
#

Because of that complete disconnect and being made into rather generic FPS.

#

With both Vegases

night girder
#

It's not a generic FPS 😒

#

Ok, Vegas maybe.

#

But siege isn't a generic FPS.

twin dew
#

Yeah, but the MP one is basically just Counter Strike done better.

night girder
#

How many games let you do this.

#

You need a teammate with a hammer, to break it down. Or you can shoot holes though it. And the dude to the right has shield ready.

#

And every character is a class with "skills". But the skills are more tactical.

twin dew
#

Yeah, it is good in its own niche.
But it isn't niche we like.

night girder
#

Yeah, it's major depart from original.

twin dew
#

But the first three were you acting as counter terrorist units operative lead basically.
Planning and executing counter-terrorist ops for 8 operators in 1-3 teams in linear campaign where the missions tied together.

Then Vegases were just pretty standard FPS games with tactical sprinkles.

night girder
#

Yeah, I understand.

#

Is this rainbox six 1 from 1999?

#

Looks like a first person shooter 🤣

twin dew
#

Completely different games per platform

#

I'm talking about the PC "base" original version.

#

That seems to be the Playstation version, which is most limited.

night girder
#

Ok, but it seems that in 1999 they already had first person shooters under the rainbox six flag.

bronze jasper
#

yeah you controlled a squad of guys i think. and you could use first person view, but it wasn't controlled like an fps

night girder
#

Ah, door kickers for example!

#

and a few other indie games that do something similar.

twin dew
#

Ah, that is why I remember three teams, at least Rainbow Six 3 only had three.
While 1 had four, not going to check what 2 had.

twin dew
night girder
#

I am trying to think of a tactical singeplayer game on PS2 where you had to talk to your squad through a headset, which came with the game.
And most of the time, they did the opposite of what you asked.
Player: "Take cover."
Squad: "Roget that, breaching door."

🤣

night girder
#

To be fair, a lot of games were janky back then 🤣

twin dew
#

Rainbow Six 1-3 very much so.
In large part as the friendly/enemy "AI" wasn't anywhere near necessary level yet and caused so many "reality" breaking issues.

#

As in breaking the immersion, when the worlds best special operatives die to bad pathfinding etc.

#

Two classics were getting kind of stuck in wall while breaching a room, causing them to slowly inch into the doorway, getting shot in the process.
Or crossing already open doorway to get to the other side, to get ready to breach.
