So for person wanting 1Gbit/s, the included thingie works fine.
It reminds me of that 2 way ethernet splitter which cuts your speed to 100 mbit's but the one on image is some sketchy type of switch
I would like to know how it was wired
Because 10 and 100 Mbit/s Ethernet use only two pairs (4 pins).
1Gbit/s and up use all four pairs (8 pins).
Those were/are just passive adapters that wire the second port to the unused pairs.
This is active device with switch in it.
So that main device port is probably 10Gbit/s.
The thingie is 4-port 1Gbit/s switch with extra electronics to bypass the switch for one device only use.
With probably passive non-standard PoE power.
Because that device side port looks like standard ethernet jack.
And anything else would need that 24+ pins (3x 8) to even support three ports at 1Gbit/s.
Is there an AM5 motherboard where all or most of the connectors are right angle?
the msi godlike has all connector on the right and at an angle. but its a little expensive
Yes. 1300 last i checked
still less expensive than most 64gb ram kit
Ugh. That mb may actually be what i need to do what i want but its so expensive. I have a spare 7900xtx lying around that i want to use but im running into either physical placement issues or pcie electrical connection issues(as in connecting only via x4 or x1)
you want to use two gpu ?
For rendering and ai stuff. Not gaming
maybe riser could help you, or motherboard with connection on the back
I dont have a vertical slot
Most other motherboards only have 1 slot capable of x8 or higher so the second gpu would be restricted to x1 or x4. Thats if it even fits. Most mb have the first slot as an m.2 slot with the next 4 slots dedicated to 1 x16 slot. So if the second gpu is placed in the lower 2 slots, the usb 2.0, audio and other connections get in the way
asrock AM5 board dont line share between nvme and PCI, and if two gpu are used theyr at 8x. but some got burned cpu.
at least the X870E taichi do
Well i may look into it later either the godlike or taichi. Not saying im getting it but look closer at it.
i use 3 nvme on the taichi, and still have x16 on gpu. i know the msi carbon line share, and most other brand are pretty bad. i dont remember line sharing being a problem prior to am5
Lane sharing isnt the issue im looking at. Its that all the other pcie slots are wired physically for x4 or less.
At least from what ive seen
the taichi use a spitter and both run at x8 if you use two GPU, but i think that both x16 are actually x16 electrically.
you only have them tho, not much more to do with it
Im fine with x8 as i dont think a 7900xtx would saturate the connection in most work loads or gaming but correct me if im wrong
i dont think so. used a 4070 on x8 and didnt had bad score on benchmark. not used in IA tho
if memory bandwith is important maybe, but youll probably lose less than 10%. im pretty sure hardware unboxed tried this pcie 5.0 vs 4.0 vs 3.0
pci 3.0 x16 is pci 4.0 x8
I also have a 2080ti collecting dust
I think thats 3.0
If a pcie 3.0 x16 device is connected to a 4.0 x16 slot, does it still use 16 lanes or what?
i think so, cuz the card will not use full 4.0 bandwidth and still need the X16, but at 3.0 speed
Thats kinda what i was thinking. Had someone tell me it would only use 8 4.0 lanes.
if the card is 3.0, it will stay at 3.0 speed. if used on pcie 4.0 x8 you will get pcie 3.0 x8 speed.
would be fire if it wasn't the case. a 1080ti would only need pcie 5.0 x4 for full bandwith, and would work perfectly on x2
They should make it a thing
worst i ever did is use a 1070 ti on a pcie 4.0 x2. as the card is pcie 3.0, it was technically at pcie 4.0 x1 speed. somehow it worked, but badly. maybe 40% of the normal performance
msi b650 tomahawk wifi second x16 slot is electrically x2. thats what i did learn
Thats why im looking so closely at how its electrically connected
i wanted to mess with using intel + nvidia at the same time. and it does work somehow
most of the time its only written in the ref sheet
and on *. its really annoying
Asus X870E Crosshair can also run dual 8x GPU, but then some of the m.2 cant be used
i think the taichi is less expensive and don't line share
the asrock nova also dont line share if i recall properly. its less expensive. but im not sure about the pcie x16 electronically
Yeah Taichi is cheaper by 200-300€ for me, but also it only supports Gen5 NVME in one slot only, Asus allows more configurations. If dropping single GPU to 8X, you can run 3pcs. Gen5 NVME x4 lanes
depend on the person and goal. actually 3 nvme at pci 5.0 x 4 is really good. i personally prefer maxing gpu. if you use two gpus, you reduce the number of nvme you can use. or reduce the gpu bandwith when using more nvme. i prefer 1 nvme at 5.0 speed and 3 at 4.0. but thats personal.
i did think alot about those two when i chose my motherboard. but price + line sharing got me taichi
Sure, lot of options on them
- i had a very good offer on it
it came with a scratch on the nvme shield under the gpu. and i bought it 350 because of it
but the crosshair screen is really cool
My gaming pc with X870E Hero has RTX5090 @16x. And Samsung 9100 pro Gen5 on the main m.2 slot, and then 2 pcs. Gen4 NVMEs on the m.2 slots that can be used without dropping GPU to 8x.
rock solid build
i use 3 samsung pro 990 2tb, 4070 super ti and r9 7900x. got good deals on them
Always the lowest common denominator in both version and lanes
Slot 4.0x16, device 3.0x16 - > link 3.0x16
Slot 4.0x4, device 3.0x16 - > link 3.0x4
👍
And they have the nerve to call out customers if they dare to download pirated software lol
Wish I could download nvidia GPU illegaly
Yeah NVIDIA.. soon need GPU for wheelloader investors.caterpillar.com/news/news-details/2026/Caterpillar-Teams-With-NVIDIA-to-Revolutionize-Heavy-Industry-with-Physical-AI-and-Robotics/default.aspx
Hope it's not going to be self-driving caterpillar because it's not fun being run over by a construction vehicle weighting tons
Largest one I found online
It probably will. Excatly those large mining trucks. Komatsu already has them in production use
They can carry 400 tons
Also autonomous drive is really common underground
Brings me memories of Mr. Nice guy movie with a giant mining truck like the image above
Yeah visibility is not so great from them, even with cameras. I need regularly to visit mines where they operate that style of haul trucks. Always have to give them way when driving smaller cars same area.
Currently designing a bucket for a 200t Hitachi Excavator that loads blasted rock to smaller Komatsu 605 (64t payload) haul trucks.
being run over by one of those might not be fun, but they don't drive on regular roads. They're only in big mines and other projects that need massive amounts of material moved. It's probably a good idea to not walk where they operate

Never used n8n before but from what I understand it's been around since way before AI
And when I read about those CVEs I didn't think any were actually related to AI?
Something about improper sandboxing
specifically it's a framework to run apps for you automatically. that's just asking for remote execution and is more like a remote execution design pattern.
also, the cves' are from the company n8n disclosing their own vulnerabilities after they were fixed. Most companies do this. It's called responsible disclosure.
I'm not sure why anyone would get mad at them for that. Seems like Low Level is a yellow journalism youtuber that misrepresents facts.
yeah i've watched through the whole video at 1.5x. none of the vulnerabilities are about AI itself. Just standard vulnerabilities that can happen to any software.
I watched it.
He sureley did get confused about the AI platform because it seems to be their latest addition.
Gonna go ahead and qualify this as a big nothing burger
These vulnerablities aren't on their latest version. They disclosed long after they've been fixed.
Yee which is the most important either way.
Which again is already kind of obvious.
I seen him reading someone else's breakdown of the sandbox CVE... and he says "I can't tell if this is just ai slop" before he reads it. .... It's clearly not slop and is technical information that is verifiable by someone who knows.
Why is this guy calling himself low level tech if he can't read commented code?
The channel used to be called low level programming. Which was a better name when he actually did do code samples in a low level way.
Sadly I feel he is getting more clickbaity.
Annoying trends along side of craming AI features into every place where they don't bellong. Also in the bunch is blaming AI for everything.
Pretty much. Shove AI down your throat until you can't handle it. And then shove some more down.
I can't wait to cheer when the bubble finally bursts.
there'll be AI after the bubble bursting. And just like the dotcom bubble bursting, there won't be one moment. It'll be seen as giants like lycos, yahoo, alta vista, ask jeeves, all falling one at a time. As new giants rise to take their places
open ai is on the road to bankruptcy by 2027 aledgedly but i dident check how thue that was just saw it in passing
and just like before. All the people who opposed the web and thought it was a fad, they'll be worn out and exhausted and just capitulate and accept the new norm.
microsoft will acquire them. i think that was always the plan.
same with google and youtube
microsoft is probably the company thats the most due to face reality that all there products suck and few people use them willingfully
Microsoft has a ton of cash and aren't going anywhere. They could lose money for the next decade and be fine
If they go bankrupt, it'll be down the road a little further and long past any ai bubble
I'm thinking X will be one of the giants to fall
i almost dont want it too just because its at the very least keeping the stupid people at bay
Mhm, I read something about X yesterday.
Found it.
Threads slowly taking over X in daily active users.
Meta could fall too, but yeah. I would say half of both those platforms, at least, are bots
Mhm, yeah it's a mix of a few things going on the same time for X losing popularity.
For Meta, I don't know. They seem to be doing fine.
They have whatsapp. Facebook. Their meta verse, which I think failed? Than their VR glasses etc.
Instagram is also from Meta. So they have a wide portfolio to cash on.
X is a bit fucked on that front 🤣
oh true. i'm just talking long term. Meta are part of the AI bubble. It's Zuck's biggest bet yet.
Recently read they started firing people working on metaverse
Guess they can change their name back to Facebook since metaverse has failed expectations
They need all the money to pump into AI.
Because whatever we think, it's not a bubble.
... right? 😏
95% of AI companies reported no investment returns in 2025
the metaverse is definately not splashing down like zuck wanted. I think it'll still happen but not as a corpo brand. Novels have been describing a metaverse type of layer to the world because of networked information for decades. Zuck just tried to trademark it
I just think all these CEO's are just nerds.
That don't know the distinction between dreaming, fantasizing vs reality.
Daemon an Freedom™ are my favorite depictions of a metaverse
I understand Mark having a view of the future (VR, AI, ...)
But you can't force that future, it will not end well if they do.
Really need to buy this book asap since I love cyberpunk
It's better to guide people to the future, than to force 😉
there's a graphic novel adaptation too its pretty nice
from 1982 and Gibson gets SOOO much of it right
I think Apple is making Neuromancer series too

Apple TV has kickass science fiction tbh
I am still Dune hooked tbh. Just love the whole computer wars and the consequences in that universe 🤣
I'm so mad at SyFy channel for cancelling so many good shows with a lot of potential. But to their credit, they made some kickass Dune miniseries. Dune and Children of Dune
I love matrix trilogy except Matrix 4 which was a huge disappointment
I saw a dune series once, very old and euhm ... it wasn't very good 🤣
Matrix is cool, but the humans turning into batteries iss a bit far fetched.
Butlarian Jihad. When a super intelligence ruled the entire human race. A few rose up and burned it all down.
They should have stopped at Matrix 3 tbh. Matrix 4 just ruined everything
4 wasn't even based on source material was it?
Can't believe I wasted money on IMAX 4DX for Matrix 4
They shoulda stopped at 1. after 1, any kind of real story they were trying to tell ended. It was just super fun CGI and choreography
so what can go wrong 🤷♂️
Yeah pretty much this.
And edgy AF with all the leather clothes 🤣
Matrix is based on animatrix btw
4 was written by the same people. The Wachowskis. There was no source material other than the storyboard/comic they showed WB
Oh, I though there was books.
animatrix came after matrix
It's still possible the The Wachowskis got ordered for a triology.
and didn't expect a 4th to be ordered by hollywood.
Sorry. Just realized I was wrong
And holywood loves to milk things that worked before instead of creating new things.
Thought it was animatrix first
I'm pretty sure Lana Wachowski wrote 4 not to extend the lore of the Matrix, but to do a lot of commentary about the business
and WB was like "hell yeah we'll fund another matrix movie"
I still thhink first one was most interesting. The viewer was still in the dark. It had cool scenes. Red pill. Blue pill.
They did this with Stranger Things 5 ending where they made one character fate unknown so they can milk the series later
First one is a treasure
Honestly, I cannot remember much memorable from 2 and 3. Just giant robots and human batteries.
Some sort of revolt.
nope. It was totally a side project they did after 1 was so popular
And Neo taken away by the robots at the end when he "died?" or something.
While for example, lord of the rings, I know all 3 movies pretty well. Because they were all amazing 😄
The hobbit was shit though. They tried turning 1 book into 3 movies. Recipe for disaster.
One thing the Matrix did was a proper trailer. No other movie has ever executed a trailer like that. Showing neo do the whole bullet time thing then being like "what is the matrix?"
then no other information at all. no scenes from the real world. no "we are batteries" revelations. Just a question. Simple trailer. That opening night showing was so kick ass. the whole audience went "Whaaaaaaaaaaaat"
Imagine ChatGPT being the robot here 🤣 https://youtu.be/a8J5u7Mp7cE

I don't think i'll ever live to see another opening night movie like the matrix again
Matrix was good escapism.
I'd pick up random payphones and be like "operator?" just to check
"What if humans can download skills in a world that we think is reality but is a simulation?"
Wonder what I would download first.
Probably download a few languages. Always handy to speak multiple languages.
Flying is also pretty dope.
I just want the star trek holodeck
kung fu
I would prefer usb C though.
Not whatever the fuck the matrix uses to connect people to the simulation. It looked not pleasant.
That thing.
lol ||the giant spike||
Yeah 🤣 I* put it in spoiler tags for those who don't like spikey things.
gp
That was interesting though in the matrix.
i thoguht 4 was funner than 3
The process of going into the matrix, wasn't pleasant at all.
Everything outside the matrix was fucking bleak. Which makes total sense.
I never watched Matrix 4 tbh. Don't see why I would.
rainy day
yeah but then suddenly ||doogie howser||. watch it you'll see
And then they wanted to added more stuff to a finished story for money.
My two cents.
Like i said, i don't think Lana wrote it to extend the lore of the matrix world. It's more like her commentary on the creative business than a real part 4
"i dont like how old properties are ressurected all the time" yup
Did you ever see Sense8? That was a trippy show from them. Netflix cancelled it but they had some good seasons first
Fair, I am just very skeptic to hollywood stuff.
its a little provacative
Yes, I think so.
On further investigation. No I haven't watched it 😛
I am not sure. There was so many shows around that time all doing the same.
Heroes or something? the 100 or something?
there's people called sense8s . 8 people anywhere on the planet, but all 8 of them are the same mind/person and they're slowly waking up to that
So what makes you like it?
the writing. I appreciate how the wachowskis do things
Oh, it's also from wachowskis. Interesting
I think Lana is primarily the writer of the two
I wonder who Lana is 😄 🤣 🤘
lol thats at the unreal 5 event they did. that was a fun tech demo. wish it was easy to load on pc
Her pink dreadlocks are pretty amazing.
yeah those are well crafted
she looks like a character from her own universe
which makes sense 😄
I always loved the goth/metal vibe in the matrix.
they invented some kind of new camera for Speed Racer that shoots everything in infinite focus or something. It looks more like a cartoon with a lot less perspective. It's a really neat effect
it's one of my favorite anime live action adaptations
Facebook is over 50% ai generated content now so meta is also on the chopping block
but it’s another one of those companies that are simply too big to fail as long as they do nothing
Slopbook
The only reason sense8 was at all appealing was because of J. Michael Straczynski, of Babylon 5 fame.
different people like different things and thats totally fine
The story was mostly wachowski's concept. Since Stratczynski was so experienced in episodic formats, they brought him in at the start as they started to actually work the show out
precisely.
they leaned into the common themes of that time a little too hard, but it was a blast while it lasted. if they had been a little less heavy handed on those thematic points it likely would've been able to finish properly. absolutely worth watching
Wonder if investors see that.
Meta showing numbers to their investors: "Look, we got one billion posts a day."
Investors: 😮 🤑
Meta not showing: "And 90% is AI generated" 🤣
And the ad revenue is also going to be interesting. How do you know how many people have seen an ad, or how many AI/bots "viewed" it.
Man now my irl factory is fucked
I have no idea how don't ask
Yes, that basically was my main point i was trying to make all along, then the whole steam hw survey was mentioned and i assumed the entire discussion was in bad faith, given i was never strictly talking about pc gaming to begin with. Anyways apu you can go look up the news apu and draw your own thoughts on that.
what is it about UE5 that makes it die if I have Godot running?
waiting too long
That makes no sense.
not properly preheated ?
No idea four prints later and it hasn't happened again
I'm suspecting filmament defect
it would match with preheat problems ?
next prints it's already hot
Most likely this. I always preheat my 3D printer before use
Although it's old now and mostly collecting dust
I hated leveling the print bed since each print bed corner has a cog you need to turn in order to level the bed with a use of a piece of paper
Contacted Beyerndynamic support as my new MMX230 headset does not reconnect automatically if leaving Bluetooth range temporarily. Need to power off and power on for it to connect. Got response that its a known issue, and should be fixed in firmware update.
had the same system on an artillery sidewinder x3 pro. did yours had to be levelled every print ? it was awful for mine
I have Ender 5 but levelling is awful even though you don't have to do it with every print
Well, this is just stupid:
My main router gets IPv6 address via 6rd on DHCPv4.
It uses Prefix delegation to share IPv6 addresses to machines via RA.
VM has VF network adapter assigned to it and gets IPv6 via that RA.
VM runs nspawn containers.
I configured NetworkD on that VM to use static block of IPv6 from fc00::/64 to share via RA to the containers.
And NAT66 so they can access internet via IPv6 without having actually valid IPv6 addresses.
Man, researching things is nearly impossible nowadays it seems. Search results are polluted and overrun with a proliferation of slop sites siting fabricated data with broken links and bogus statistics. When you find a "legitimate" site like Forbes, they can't even properly abbreviate a unit correctly(internet speeds in Mbsp, anyone). Whitepapers are held hostage by journals and essentially no information you find is verifiable.
Followed a big train of citations from a lot of serious-looking resources back to a Forbes article that's just a listicle with referral links to a bunch of internet providers and no sources.
because people dont check sources when doing research anymore
so no one holds them acountable
id be impressed if its even 10% of researchers that check sources
I just got a price hike on my already expensive internet service - $60 for 100 Mb/s - and there are only two providers here, so I've decided to write the council about it and request that they open a formal issue resolution on it but it's nearly impossible to source good data to back up that we pay 50-75% more for the service here than other areas with similar population/economy.
thats the whole goal is it not?
to obfuscate evidence
use the lack of evidence as evidence of them being guilty or faul play possibly going on on the behalf of the providers maybe biassing news
2 birds with one stone
Forbes.com is not the magazine publication. They are an opinion piece platform. It's like medium. it's an open platform that anyone can participate in. You shouldn't be doing research on opinion piece sites.
That might be the core to your problem.
Again, not doing research there. If you read the everything I said you'd know I didn't source anything there but rather followed a chain of sources back to Forbes.
I'm not sure you read what i posted at all. Forbes.com isn't a source of information. It's a open platform that anyone can use to blog on. It's all opinion pieces, not sources of information.
Again
That's why I'm complaining
Because reputable sites are sourcing from Forbes
Those aren't reputable sites. They've tricked you with marketing
Holy crap dude, get out
fight or flight. relevant username.
I'm not saying I don't know how to tell if a site has good info or not. I'm saying it's gotten to be very tedious to wade through high-ranking sites that use necro'd brand names or seem good at first glance but are just slop machines.
When you have a net worth of 164 billion and complain it isnt enough moment, greed from the ultra wealthy is beyond out of control now
These ports on the right. Would they be slow due to 900mA as mentioned here?
Or is charge speed based on the 5v?
Both. 5v is standard usb voltage, can go higher for usb-pd fast charging. 900mA is usb 2 rated power
dumb question time since i can't seem to google it with any kind of reliability: what components are run off of the 3.3/5/12v rails?
Maybe I was miss sold too then. These are supposed to be best at the time.
USB Type A tops out at 5v 2.1A iirc
I see
Hope my will be good enough for my 13 tab. Wanna get into macro decks with Touch Portal.
12v feeds high power components(cpu vrm) 5v feeds peripherals(fans, rgb, usb), 3.3 is mostly unused nowadays but it used to be primarily for disk drives and hdds
Lots of modern hdds will only pull from the 5v rail though
arent fans 12V?
Yeah, sorry
what about the thunderbolt connectors on newer mobos?
are they putting 5v/48A thru those?
yay!
Absolutely love that it’s modular
You have to take side and top panel off to get to back panel though. lol
This is inspired by a leak through one of my chimneys.
Had to rearrange my whole living room. lol
you should see my shitshow of a case

Oh I fell out with Corsair years ago
Fucking double clicking mouse.
Which was a software and not a hardware issue
yea, if i had built this one myself i would have done things very differently
but it was a raffle win, so i'm not complaining
i think the case was the cheapest part 🤣
lol
Look at this mess, lol
6950xt.
I should clean more but the thing is never ever stressed. lol
the flex on that 180 power adapter is kinda scaring me
So I rationalize
lol. Why?
It’s just what I had at the time I guess. lol
beats the 12vhpwr i guess 🤣
It is thirsty!!!
also i always love how they spend god knows how much on product design to make something look good, then plaster a giant ugly sticker with a bar code on it
i'd gladly pay double for fans if noctua started making rgb
Yeah that brown is ugly too
i don't mind the brown/black/grey
just not having rgb as an option alongside the best performers in the industry sucks
Yep
Maybe there are mods for it.
I bought the kraken for my cpu water cooling
GPU is just air cooled cos I’m not brave enough to modify. lol
oh same
still tempted to swap out the front glass for an airflow one for 3 more fans
although for the cost i'd probably just rather completely swap out the case for a non-garbage one
I deserve some tech support slander!
Oh no my pc isn’t turning on
The 1 plug I forgot to plug in! lol
Lovely!
the case looks pretty, but it's like a Mercedes. absolute nightmare to work on
lol
side panel is hinged but doesn't just lift out
rear panel has a single giant mesh filter with no easy way to clean it
my PSU is one of the new "side plugs" ones, and in order to install or remove anything on it, i have to completely remove the HDD cage above it
i love that
I don’t even use fans at the back of mine. Or right side panel. Can support up to 12 if I recall
Like I said, usb-pd can go above 5v but it requires an active handshake
Ooof
well yea, hopefully nobody's trying to send 240W thru a string
usb-pd 3.1 tops out at 48v 5A
lemme get a pic so you too can experience the pain
lol
corsair case, corsair psu. can't work together
they didn't design the drive cage to just slide out the back like normal case manufacturers do
you have to undo 1 screw on the outside, then TILT the cage DOWN and out of a couple of tabs
so to remove the cage, you have to remove the PSU first
and that's regardless of if it's the shift design psu or not
Yo don’t wanna see my duel chamber. Not organized. Cables literally stuffed in. lol
🙂
rate my setup
10/10 for cleanability
non-soldered ram is a nice bonus
the lenovo nipple is legendary
it is
😛
my most favorite setup was probably the one i made out of K'nex for my laptops
did that for probably 8 years
double decker, tilted, room for 3 external drives and a usb hub on the bottom layer
and side rails so it wouldn't just slide off
i should remake it and post it on thingiverse or something. never seen anyone come close to it
USB2 was 500mA max, USB3 is that 900mA max.
Slow phone chargers are usually 2A, and fast ones use both higher voltage and 3A or 5A max.
And I wasted half a day combined yesterday and today, because I didn't know SystemD had added new global toggle setting for IPv6 forwarding since I last configured a router.
Need to go through the current config file documentation to see about other new settings.
As there is USB-PD, and then various older chip/phone maker specific fast charging standards for those faster phone chargers, that go above 15W (5V, 3A).
This is literally a random setup from the thinkerpad redit i saw on a YouTube video not long ago
Bro, I am fighting some idiot support atm.
I reported a bug a few weeks ago. And the idiots are questioning why I paid for their product and saying that's not possible.
Because their product is "free".
Now I have to reply with order id, paypal and everything to PROOF to them that I did buy a product from them.
And all I wanted to do, was report a bug. Fml.
They told me "oh, what you use isn't supported anymore, you should use this free extension now".
So I said; "This is bullshit, I paid for this product, how come it's not supported and replaced by a free alternative?"
They replied: "What do you mean you paid for it? It's free." 🤦♂️
I am literal staring at my paypal receipt from 2017 🤣
Sorry. Rant over.
At least you are not dealing with Deloitte auditors
They keep hiring fresh college graduates with zero experience and I have to waste my time explaining every basic thing to them
I should send them this so they can reconsider working for Deloitte 🤣 https://www.reddit.com/r/consulting/comments/1nyrv0y/deloitte_to_refund_government_admits_using_ai_in/
is it normal for system to be super laggy when an external drive is maxed out?
cpu at 22% and gpu at 4
currently download to it at a rate of about 20mb/sec
No, its usually failing drive
time to order a spare then, lol
Yep
This is what a wd blue will do
So it might simply be a flaw than faulty?
I was making a joke but its a failing drive is what that is
K
Good thing I don’t store anything valuable on it.
My m.2 has lasted far longer and it was a lesser known brand called Sabrent if I recall.
What kind of drive is that?
Other than m.2 and sabrent I don’t know what else to add tbh, lol
My rig only has samsung ssds
I still use 2 sata samsung ssd's on my PC
Both of them will last more than 10 years
Actually, one of them is 11 year old I think
I think mines a Toshiba.
I love samsung ssds
Mine don't, as some also have some Intel Optanes in them 😆
thinking of retiring my USB AIB, since i don't need my VR sensors anymore
but it's still a great way to house the dumbass gigantor xbox wireless controller dongle
am i crazy or is this result not all kinds of wack
Too small test size, and being run on in-use drive too.
Or you mean the writes staying up while reads go down?
kinda i mean the writes not following what i assume to be there cache levels
dont have another drive in this system so yea no choice
is windows11 now same as windows7 with malware?
since when wasnt windows malware
when will you learn to stop using edge
learn? phah
i dont know how people trip over windows so hard this way. i've been using w11 since jan 2023. i've never seen any of this shit.
i feel like linux wouldn't work out for you either. it gives you even more ability to make a bad user experience for yourself.
i even use edge sometimes too
hahahahahah
I guess I won't say anything about my linux experience to not scare you
good laughs
i didn't even know yahoo.com was worth visiting anymore. haven't typed that domain in a long long time
I sometimes have the same feeling. But then again, doesn't mean we don't see it. Other people don't get hit.
I think Microsoft likes to push features to select few test subjects. Or even to a selected country for legal reasons.
So it's possible people around the world see ads, or "new" features others don't see, as part of a test from a company to measure how well it would be received.
this isn't windows pushing an ad either. it's the notification panel working as intended. Edge is using it to ask if they want a website pinned as a start menu app.
And then it's possible people download beta version or something.
any app can use the notification center
that's the thing.
both fb and yahoo I didn't visit.
it just makes this spam whenver I exit edge 🙂
Or enable beta features and then complain. So many things can be going on here why they see ads and we don't.
Ah there we go. I never use edge 😄 So I've never even seen that popup.
my theory is that since I use Edge soooooo litle, it just wants to push most hyped (yahoo lmao) sites to add to quick access so they are visible and I click on them
Windows never asks me to add anything. Windows barely asks me stuff. Windows barely annoys me.
- That's how I set it up 🤣 Shut the fuck up Windows.
And if windows asks me something, I nuke it.
yeah it turns out these are paid notifications from yahoo or facebook , limited to edge though
I think I am just weird. But I really get annoyed with all these distractions on my systems. Pop-ups. Pop-ups. Pop-ups.
probably a territory thing. they've lobbied it's legality in the usa but other countries maybe not so much
Example: connect a monitor and I get asked.
"Do you want to set this as your default audio device?"
Me: "No, fuck off. Why would I want that? And if I want that. I know where the settings are."
thats true too. maybe i did get it once in january 2023, but nuked it immediately with great vengeance, and since windows syncs settings across installs i've never seen it since
That's the way. You have to be quick and nuke stuff so windows keeps being "ok" (not good, but ok). My opinion.
from orbit. it's the only way to be sure.
Untill the day, they put command prompts etc behind a paywall, we can do this 🤣
if you spend the extra $3 to a key reseller for a pro license, you can use group policy too
That would be scary right? If they limit our control over our systems more and more to the point we can barely configure it anymore like we want too.
It was the one thing it always made me love computers, the options we have. Configuration and flexibility.
It's also why I drifted away from consoles. I missed the flexibility.
yeah if admin ever gets infringed upon in a significant way, i'll migrate to linux completely. i've done a few tours on the linux side of things already. it's not unfamiliar to me at all. they'll never take that
and before anyone thinks I am paranoid.
There is a reason why I bring this up, because I've seen the news from Microsoft over the years.
And it seems they are going towards that goal. Limiting our options more and more.
The "removal" of oobe\bypassnro command. Which isn't removed. But is removed.
The command itself is gone (if I remember Baldur correctly).
But the script is still on the system.
i've seen rabble about it for years too but i've never seen microsoft actually do anything to cut off access to system administration.
were we to see something like that, it'd look like IOS. They kind of went that way with UWP, but less closed off. UWP was never cutting off system administration either.
I actually respect UWP a lot and think it's a great direction. If i understand flatpak sandboxes correctly, it's sort of the same idea.
The removal of bypassnro. Is so you can't make a local account when installing Microsoft.
So an attempt to force more people to make online accounts.
UWP never replaced win32 either. It works along side it very well
And once US is pissed off at you, they can disable your access to your own computer.
Why the fuck would I want that 🤣
i set a local account up for my mom's new laptop in december very easily. maybe they just removed it because it wasn't needed
but for some reason, whenever I try using the oobe\bypassnro keeps working when I try it.
Did it 2-3 times last year.
That is very weird.
Because Microsoft is literally saying they don't want local accounts anymore afaik.
Local-only commands removal: We are removing known mechanisms for creating a local account in the Windows Setup experience (OOBE). While these mechanisms were often used to bypass Microsoft account setup, they also inadvertently skip critical setup screens, potentially causing users to exit OOBE with a device that is not fully configured for use. Users will need to complete OOBE with internet and a Microsoft account, to ensure device is setup correctly.
That's their argument
The issue isn't setting up local accounts afaik, it's installing windows without needing to sign into an online account
or without internet access.
Because that's the real dick move. If you don't have internet. Your fucked.
literally in december, i connected to wifi, it installed updates. asked me to create a user. i made a local account. i was over there last week and it works fine still.
the issue is that this is panic again. it seems microsoft is trying to prevent people from skipping the setup process and leaving a bunch of their system unconfigured. So they're removing a hacky way that people used.
Well, I posted communication from microsoft itself. So we are not making this up. Again, so many things can be going on here.
And I installed 3-5 computers last year. NON of them allowed me to make account locally.
Without the command. Every single installation demanded me to have online account.
the "and a microsoft account" sounds more strict than it actually is. my recent personal experience does not reflect a removal of non microsoft accounts. enterprise users would hate this
I mean, however I look at it.
Removing a command isn't giving users more flexibility.
It's reducing options, reducing flexibility.
If there was a button, create local account, non of this shit was needed in the first place.
The fact the whole internet uses that command is for a reason 🤣
UAC reduces flexibility. Objectively was a good thing.
The fact Microsoft deems it neccesary to remove it, is because they know how many people do it.
Else why remove a command nobody uses or knows about? Sounds like wasted development money.
They probably know how many people do it then a bunch of windows is left unconfigured for the system it's running on and jank persists
The skip screens is just bullshit from Microsoft.
I would almost call it a blatant lie trying to cover the real reason they remove it.
and then people get mad at them for breaking windows, when they had this perfect little setup app that was intended to do it all properly that was force exit'd
I mean, thats how i set up a local account. I pressed skip.
It's like, you keep telling me i didn't do it when i know i did
yea but you cant do that anymore
Nah. Not thinking you are lying either.
Like I said, no clue what is going on. Can be so many things.
not without installing through a USB creator that can skip it for you now
But it sounds like you don't believe us either 😉
literally in december. i booted up the laptop. connected it to wifi. it installed updates. then i made a new user.
But I am happy for you, you open laptop, connect to internet, press "skip online account" and it let you make local accoutn good for you.
But my experience last year was that obee/bypassnro command for installation 🤷♂️
So there is no discussion. We all have our experiences 😄
Maybe laptop is old (in stock and it let you still make local accounts). Maybe your country has a law that forbids "only online accounts". I really don't know.
I don't understand why some people think every windows installation is the same.
The fact there is bussiness, profressional and other versions. Then legal laws for countries etc.
in my experience home blocks bypassnro if you have a working internet connection on first boot
if not, it might work, depending on your iso
pro and up will keep local accounts "for domain join" for now
if i want to replace the charging port on my steam deck oled, do i have to replace the entire main board?
if you are good with soldering, it's repairable. probably cheaper to have someone do a component replacement for you rather than buy a whole board.
Sorry for the really late reply I got sidetracked and forgot about this question.
Windows update just updates when I ask it to or it tells me to. I just did it again and it tells me everything is up to date.
I tried installing a DDU, but when I'd go to set it up and get logged into safe mode, my PC locks asking for the bit locker. Now I do know how to go about finding my bit locker, that's not the issue. The issue is, it's extremely inconvenient so I decided to attempt to clean install direct from the website, and that is working, so I won't bother with installing a DDU for the sole purpose of keeping my GPU drivers updated automatically.
I was just curious as to what would stop it from working other than Microsoft having an unknown soft lock on third party software EVEN though MCSFT and NVDA are partnered.
So, put of date core software seams likely. I'll probably not chase this any further if that's the answer as my laptop continues to play games well at decent settings as it is now.
Thank you!
That safe mode isn't usually even needed, and the way that DDU:s internal implementation boots into it is unsafe.
But just basic security for TPM included keys.
TPM will not release the key when the boot method is changed.
Unless you switch it to permissive mode before boot.
1 you can update drivers without ddu
2 ddu is not developped by Nvidia
3 it's not ddu asking for bitlocker but safe mode, ddu only recommend safe mode
4 if you format your pc, it will definitely be more complicated than entering your bitlocker
And the point of that from MS eyes is to protect your data if your laptop gets stolen.
Just that they do that for everyone, without asking...
It can be turned off in Settings.
And yes, as SharklienX said, DDU is not needed to keep drivers updated.
It is for cases when driver has broken down, not for every update.
(I suggested ddu because nvidia auto update wasn't working on their system)
Yeah, that is case when driver is broken.
I'm aware, and I did not know you could run DDU out of safe mode.
My whole initial problem was, due to the forced update, older games that I was playing would no longer launch, so I tried to do the backdate but it wouldn't let me, and suddenly I was having GPU driver errors and that's when I found out the Nvidia app would fail to update. Like I previously said I found another way to make it happen, and it works and is far more efficient than the app.
This machine is a retail machine, I'm it's 2nd owner and likely on its last legs lol. A month ago I tore it apart and resoldered connections and replaced a heatsink.
I'm currently saving for a new build that I'll do myself.
So it's software and firmwares don't need to be 100%, just "good enough" lol.
I was merely curious as to what would cause the error in the first place.
The Nvidia driver issue?
Or needing recovery key for drive encryption?
For second, Windows 11 automatically encrypts drives with BitLockers home version.
And if using MS account to log into the computer, enables TPM attestation and stores that recovery key into the MS account in cloud.
And that TPM will then store the primary key, and only release it for use if the bootloader hasn't changed.
The way that DDU boots into safe mode makes permanent change into that bootloader, which it reverts once in safe-mode and DDU runs again. Which makes it dangerous method for multiple reasons.
So bootloader will get changed, so the TPM will not release the bitlocker primary key, and Windows will ask for recovery key to be able to decrypt the drive for continuing to boot.
That whole drive encryption can be permanently turned off in Settings, Privacy & Security, Device Encryption.
Does DDU not use the msconfig start options?
Actually changing the bootloader would be wild
No, modifying the bootloader does not make sense.
A modifies bootloader would have a different signature which would make secure Boot freak, not the TPM
That MS config option modifies the bootloader config.
And is permanent change until undoed.
And DDU uses it, and that is just stupid.
It should just trigger boot into the recovery options with instructions what to select.
Which can be done as one-time reboot command.
Changing default BCD options is changing the basic boot loader behavior, even if the actual code of the bootloader didn't change.
Still part of that boot attestation.
Where that shift-reboot or like set temporary UEFI side option on how to boot next time.
And if that triggers that recovery key prompt, you can just reboot again and get into normal Windows.
Same if your monitor couldn't sync to 640x480 resolution of safe mode.
No need to try to login blind for DDU to revert that permanent msconfig/BCD boot option.
Or even worse, if you manually used msconfig, then you will need to try to find another monitor that works at low resolutions.
That TPM attestation happens once the bootloader has loaded and configured itself for OS loading.
hm, fair, that's not good behaviour
Although selecting the correct option on startup is probably too much to ask for the average user so I can see why they did it
And in theory you should be able to set that next boot to happen direct to that number selections menu.
Just AFAIK no already existing main Windows side utility to do that.
Inbuilt one I mean.
The tpm attestation have multiple points of measurement
windows call it literally "measured boot procedure" in some tools iirc
part of it is configurable in group policies
it has at least 7 point of measure
some of which are platform dependents
iirc basic ones are :
- CPU and Chipset config
- executed Firmware signature context
- Motherboard hardware config
- Other hardware listing and firmwares
- Assessed boot chain
- RAM loaded drivers and tables
- Case Intrusion state
- TPM state logs
if everything is enabled, it locks for basically any event that remotely have a hardware impact
And it cannot say what was changed, just that something was in the specific subset.
And in this case the bootloader config changes, which can be anything from non-issue to attempt to completely replace the whole bootloader.
hey uhhh does anyone know what are the best settings for nvidia shadowplay (or whatever the recording thing is called now)
don't use that, use OBS
I use windows snipping tool
@dire igloo @waxen pendant do OBS and windows snipping tool have a "record last x minutes" function?
No i just wing it.
Obs has more indepth options. I have only used it for random streaming though
hey guys, something has been annoying me in windows ... for like DECADES, lol
when in an app and a dialog pops up and it steals focus ... 1 its annoying and 2, if I am typing I might hit space or enter to affect that dialog before I have even realized, lol
Any way to stop windows from stealing the focus?
snipping tool doesn't, it's a screenshot tool.
OBS does, it's called replay buffer
nice
and unlike shadowplay, OBS doesn't ruin your SSD lifespan
Uses RAM-buffer instead of constantly writing to drive until triggered.
Not that I know of. Even steam steals focus sometimes depending on how and when it startups.
Don't tempt me with the good result? Stop threatening me with good time
AI boom could falter without wider adoption, Microsoft chief Satya Nadella warns
Big tech boss tells delegates at Davos that broader global use is essential if technology is to deliver lasting growth
https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2026/01/20/ai-boom-could-falter-without-wider-adoption-microsoft-chief-satya-nadella-warns/
Thing with AI is that it hasn't found enough of its Killer Apps yet. The dotcom boom had a few of those and each one drives user adoption to the platform. Early web had email, maps and porn. Right now AI has email assist (so many people use it to write business emails), and sex chat bots. The latter having a lot less of a market base than traditional porn has.
the things that survived the dotcom boom had proven reliability beforehand. the current "AI" platforms have none of that
really should be properly naming them as LLMs and not "AI", as actual AI doesn't exist
i mean the xbox bloat you cant remove does it but its not reliable
press windows key and G
its always running in the background but sometimes it dosent work

Is it possible to convert a 12 pin connector to an 8pin connector?
For what?
GPU power connectors?
In what direction?
@dire igloo Do you have problems with phand machines in your town breaking down literally every hour? I had to wait 30 minutes in line because some guy came with 2 large bags full of plastic bottles and he broke the machine 3 times while emptying those 2 bags
I could go to another shopping center with a phand machine but them breaking down seems more like a universal problem rather than a local one
.. I can't remember if I ever saw a broken Pfand machine
Guess people are addicted to recycling bottles here then because 90% of them break almost every hour lol
Been to LIDL and Kaufland today and both machines were broken 😅
*pfand
and no, from my experience they break like every couple days, not hourly
and most of the time, it's solved by a shop employee coming over and removing whatever bottle or can got stuck
Sorry, typo (probably autocorrect)
When I see a person with 2 shopping carts full of bottles, I already know the machine will break immediately....
Makes the whole recycling thing pointless if the machines are broken all the time
Not problem in Finland.
But then we have had bottle recycling for decades at this point.
Wish we got paid more than 0,10 € per bottle although some bottle brands are worth more for some reason
I think we introduced bottle recycling 15 years ago but now every machine is broken 🤣
here it like 0.03$ usd or so
so you guys have it easy
always has been
in Germany, it's 25ct for one-way plastic bottles and cans and 15ct for resusable plastic bottles and glass bottles
12pin from psu to 8pin on gpu

Why, when all PSUs with 12-pin GPU connectors also have 8-pin GPU connector outputs?
But could be done with suitable adapter, not sure if anyone sells those at this time.
You don't get anything.
You pay the same amount when you buy the product.
So only way to win is when someone buys the product, doesn't return the bottle and you find it and return it.
near as i can tell there's not a single bulletproof "this 12VHPWR thingy will never melt". if there was we would have heard about it by now and whoever made it would be bringing in about $10 billion
Not enough 8pins
Are you using the second pigtails?
Or there are no such things on the cables?
Because if you run out of PCIe 8-pin connectors, I would expect you to run out of juice too.
Ive used all the 8pins.
My pc at the moment is unable to use all the power from my psu. A 7900x3d and 7900xtx with a 1200w
Ok, seems that PSU makers have stopped including lot of PCIe power connectors at some point.
I would have expected 6-8x PCIe 8-pins on 3-4 cables for that level of PSU.
Instead of that 3x on 3 cables.
Thats correct.
I think i found one adapter on Amazon but unsure if it would work. I want to add a second gpu for rendering and ai but my psu is a limiting factor. Corsair no longer makes the ax1600i it seems. That has plenty of 8pins
Just question of included cables.
Which has often changed without the PSU model changing otherwise.
Everyone is putting 12pins on the psu now which i refuse to get a gpu that uses it
Which makers PSU?
I have a seasonic. Direct 12pin on the psu
Seasonic doesn't unfortunately easily sell more/different cables.
There are third party Seasonic compatible cables being sold.
Some just include an 8 to 12pin cable with the psu if they dont have a direct 12pin
Where at?
If my ubuntu laptop shows empty wifi icon all of the sudden (aka weak signal)
On a very usual spot couple meters away from the router
Is it just another bug, very polluted are or a hint that somebody messing with connection?
Who needs fusion reactor to reach sun temperatures when you have Phoenix
Cable mod
i think they only have psu 8 pin to gpu 12 pin
They have everything other than 12vhpwr unless they rereleased it
looking for 12pin psu to 8pin gpu
No Seasonic 8-pin PCIe power cables there as ready made products anymore, could be created via custom cable order.
Im basically looking for something like this
Today I learned bitlocker keys are stored on servers? 😒
And when someone asks Microsoft to unlock a encrypted laptop, Microsoft just gives the key to them so they can unlock the laptop.
oh god
So ... wtf is this for encryption? When the key is in the hands of external party.
security nightmare is what bitlocker is apparently....
but that is even worse than i expected
seriously the keys are stored external servers, thats insane
also, if servers get hacked. All bitlocker keys are out in the wild. This is so dumb in so many ways.
This is just another case why not to go for apple or microsoft for your OS.
But Linux. Whatever you do on Linux, should in theory, be totally under your control.
And you never have to think "What is in it for Linux?"
Which I question with every move Apple and Windows do. "What is in it for them?"
basically thats why countries and corporations are switching to linux, to much control is given to external parties, to much isnt under your control
Yeah, for now it seems we are slowly waking up. Including me. I still got Apple and Microsoft.
and when security is needed, windows is increasingly becoming simply a non-viable option, keys being stored on servers, to much data being sent to servers aka windows 11, etc
Privacy nightmare. And I just really dislike they take away control over my system.
Simple example; MS pushes updates so hard now. Because we need to have secured devices.
But I don't believe that at all.
I think they just want to have more control over our systems. If they make a change, they want to be sure that changed is pulled in by the systems.
If systems auto update constantly, you have more contrrol etc.
yep, i only use it for the moment because most of my core software is mostly windows based, but im looking forward to the day honestly when i dont have to depend on windows anymore
I just want control. If I don't like to see a certain message pop up every day on my system, I want to be able to disable it.
"Hey there is a update!" - every fucking day. Because it updates the security daily. So what am I with that message? Just update security. It's small patch daily.
even windows pro doesnt give me as much control as i would like sadly
one sec I can shjow you I think.
These updates.
I have nothing against them. But don't give me a pop-up every time it's available. Since that's daily.
Most powerfull feature is this 😄
but that also disables the security updates.
So ideally, I want to disable updates. But not security updates. But ofc, windows doesn't allow that.
well there is some ways to disable updates, but the problem is that buried deep within windows and the average user wont know about that
also its buried and only works on windows pro for example, and even then its not easy to find or use
which i just hate about windows in general, they make anything that gives you any control difficult to find or use, which im certain is on purpose
also the fact that if you dont update for long enough they brick your system now
and you HAVE to install from scratch to get updates again
wtf noway
thats not security thats control
yea if you dont update they stop giving you updates unless you reset your os to get them again
this was a whole drama at one point since prebuitls had such old os builds they coudlent update anymore by the time they were sent out
so you had to configure them just to reset them just to configure them again so you could use it at all prettymuch
god i hate ms and windows.....
i hate microsoft but there too big to fail for the forseable future
and like most companies there will always be aother to buy them out when they drop and keep doing whatever they were doing
im just praying for long term demise, as everyone slowly wakes up to the insane bs and switchs from windows
sorry was raiding real quick, let me read up 😄
Yeah, I tried. I had to resort to windows professional to get group policy working.
Which allows me to get more control over updates.
You know, microsoft is parenting too much. They see their users as little kids. So they (Microsoft) do the thinking for us and that just sits not right.
"People don't update often, or when we want. So we force updates. People skip a screen with the obee/bypassnro command, so we disable that command, ... " etc
in linux they treat you like an adult: i could delete anything and no one would stop me, from my web browser to /bin to the bootloader to whatever else is on there
And Linux doesn't force your account to be online (I hope).
And Linux doesn't automatically enabled encryption and recommend users to save a extra the encryption key on their servers as backup.
correct
it's just getting silly lately. And Apple is not more innocent. Just different.
ubuntu might encourge an account (not sure, never used it), and you only get encryption when you turn it on yourself
my opinion, an OS should be out of the box as minimal setup as possible. And let users configure stuff.
apple moment
manjaro is for you then (probably)
It's totally fine that an OS gives warnings or recommendations for security reasons.
?
Apple does the same, they prevent their users to do a bunch of things simply because they (apple) think it's bad for the users
Yeah, I agree with you.
ios app store
and the quality is going backwards for apple software.
not that it was great. But it was ok. Now it's going towards bad/unasble.
good thing you can always not update
especially the music app has a lot of bugs since they nuked iTunes.
Bugs I encountered:
- Music starts playing way faster than intended.
- Music starts playing way slower than intended.
- If I scroll fast through my library, I end up scrolling into infinite void, nothing in the list, just all empty, but it let's me keep scroll down.
- Searching sometimes don't show everything. Like I can search for Bob Dylan and sometimes it only shows 1 album while I have more.
- And lastly, somethimes the album covers wont load visually, or they have glitches in them, parts missing, and scrolling up and down can fix that.
No.
Reporters confusing between Device Encryption (BitLocker Lite) and true BitLocker.
Where the encryption side is the same, but key management side is different.
Where that Home version Device Encryption puts the recovery keys into your MS account, which MS then can give out.
And true BitLocker doesn't IIRC even have option to store those to cloud.
Device Encryption as such doesn't give protection against law enforcement with proper warrants.
It is only meant to protect against stolen devices.
Apple too gives out the keys to law enforcement with warrant if they have them.
If you have enabled backup methods that store those to your Apple Account or like.
Or any cloud backups they have of your devices, as those aren't end-to-end encrypted either.
bitlocker allows in MS account
german windows cause it was the vm at hand
My former coworker claimed I would get used to iPhone ecosystem and never look back at Android 😅
One year later, I still don't like some things on iPhone and want to go back to Android
Or maybe I am too stubborn to embrace Apple
it's a usecase thing.
either you are the Apple target demographic or you're not.
your coworker's statement holds true for anyone who's part of that demographic, but your experience shows that you aren't a part
Yeah, I prefer customization and hate anything that is locked down
You sure? Maybe the laws changed. But Apple did resist.
The Apple–FBI encryption dispute concerns whether and to what extent courts in the United States can compel manufacturers to assist in unlocking cell phones whose data are cryptographically protected. There is much debate over public access to strong encryption.
In 2015 and 2016, Apple Inc. received and objected to or challenged at least 11 or...
why i really hate windows 11, on overall customization its such a down grade to windows 7
but i think windows 7 was back when ms cared more, but that just isnt the case anymore, now its all about profit and data collection, users are just another source, they care nothing about customization anymore and it shows in the lack of it in the os anymore
windows 7 came out after vista and back when corporations still had a mild shred of humility
I know, why windows 7 remains the mvp of windows os's
XP, 7, & 8.1 were great
xp on 64 bit could probably still be viable today if it had proper support
I remember when I first saw windows 8, it was a true abomination compared to windows 7, needless that os got a hard pass from me
I forget how long I stayed on windows 7, i think it was until windows 10 came out and I still didnt exactly like it, alot of customization was just gone, the menu system was just meh and sup par compared to win 7 also
8 came out when tablets were getting popular, and smart phones were getting physically larger. i can kinda see where microsft wanted to go with it, but it depended hilariously heavily on people also spending a stupid amount of money on a touch screen desktop monitor, and that was never going to happen
but at least win 10 was better overall than win 8, so it wasnt completly untolerable, unlike win 8 that I just couldnt touch that, the entire ui looked like some nightmare smart phone os project that shouldnt have been made for pc to begin with
oh by a mile
i remember when I first saw win 8 and wondered why for the love of god that was being made for pc....
the start menu looks like something you would see on a console
i think someone "important" in microsoft managed to convince the board that desktops were on their way out, and that they needed to get ahead of that with their OS
i think someone "important" in microsoft managed to convince the board that ai is on its way in and they need to get ahead of that with their OS
it would have been an absolutely brilliant play by microsoft if the market had actually moved in that direction back then, and they had managed to do full OS and networking integration between tablet, phone, and pc
they would have beat everyone else to it by years
Yeah hate to tell them that but that a was a disaster decision, desktops are certainly not on the way out and touch based os without any care for the ui, isnt the future either....
seriously if win 12 becomes another win 8, screw that im moving to linux at that point....
if i have to try to tolerate a nightmare ui design, i would at that point rather just try to deal with anything else
but in hindsight, that ended up not happening and it ended up just being another dumb decision that most people didnt like nor want, fact that so many third party apps etc had to be made for win 8 just to try to undo ms horrible ui design to....
it looks fine here on linux
hmmm the ui looks decent enough anyways, but i can only see what looks like a start menu?
well pretty common to have task bars, windows has had them for the longest time to
still like how windows 7 had a fairly customizable start menu, and it was quick and easy to find what programs you were looking for
win 10/11 isnt to bad either, at least better than that horrible win 8 ui
and this is only with kde
you have other options such as gnome and mate for a full on desktop environment
if you are looking for something more barebones, you can look at window managers which are just the gui part without the extra applications
Nice to see zsh
Yeah, Windows 8 gave me nightmares with their metro interface
One of the dumbest windows decisions from microsoft
Oh, forgot to mention Windows Vista
Hope nobody uses it even in virtual machine
That was FBI trying to get Apple to give them universal way to decrypt iPhones without further Apple involvement.
Or otherwise unlock phones that Apple didn't already have keys for, with bespoke newly developed firmware hacks that Apple could install on phones, but no-one else can.
Difference between giving stuff Apple already has.
And being forced to hack into device law enforcement want them to.
Apple is perfectly willing to give stuff they have, that the device owner has given them (un)intentionally via using Apples cloud stuff.
But not being forced to bypass their implemented stuff on devices that they don't have the keys etc. already via that cloud stuff usage.
At least one of those was FBI trying to Apple give them firmware version they could install on any phone, that didn't have limiters against password input attempts. Neither time between attempts or how many times you can try before the device bricks itself.
US law enforcement doesn't like actually getting those actual proper warrants to try to get stuff from Apple, they want backdoors they can just use whenever without further Apple or court involvement.
So attempts to use that All Writs Act to force Apple to give them that, instead of normal warrants on case by case basis.
Windows 11 start is good cause it doesn’t need to exist
Its a gateway to search and that it does great
so what's with all the reporting about asus boards frying X3Ds?
hey guys I have slow internets!
speeds look ok but it takes several seconds to even start?
well if I am skipping ahead in youtube it takes a good while too
changing from store on steam to my wishlist, etc
lol
should be a lot faster, eh?
in my case its much slower than normal
had this internet at my home for a year now
remember when all the covid shutdowns started happening, and all the ISPs started begging for money from governments because they were saying that the spike in WFH internet usage was gonna overwhelm their hardware, and then they sent all that government money to investors instead of into hardware, and nothing actually got overwhelmed?
it happens constantly and i'm beyond sick of it
Like this?
Are you on wired or WiFi?
Ping looks a bit high for wired
Also slow skipping on yt is just yt being yt
Speedtest does server selection etc. that take time.
2ms of ping???
Must be close server, for proper results should use server that is some distance away, that way can tell something about the ISP as well
Like if my connection from eastern Finland is about 32-35ms to Germany/central europe, and just below 10ms to Helsinki. And Asia/USA not even mention 😄
ethernet only
yeah but I have used it many times in the past and was instant
things just seem a lil delayed today
Depends lot on the run for me.
If you don't select a specific server and use the default auto.
symetrical is nice but honestly, upload speed is meaningless unless you're a streamer. and even then you don't need a lot to stream 1080p at 60fps
12000 Kbps OBS automatic config for Twitch
Lot of other cases where you upload stuff.
Streaming uses pretty low amount of bandwidth.
Often maxing in that 10-20Mbit/s range.
I have 1 gbit for download and 500 mbit for upload. It's not symmetrical but it's more than enough for me
I push a lot data to cloud, 3D scan mostly
Btw, my bandwidth for January is 1.4 TB. Hope I won't be punished for violating fair-use policy 😅
*Transfer/usage
Although I have never heard someone got a warning for violating fair-use policiy for my ISP
Once I finally got decent speed, I can finally take advantage of Steam/Epic/etc and cloud storage
Damn, typing is hard when you probably have calcified shoulders 😩
that sucks. i had calcium build ups in my knee tendons. the inflamation made standing and walking so difficult. anti inflamatories like neproxin helped me a whole lot
I am on ibuprofen and voltaren gel right now. Without it, I wouldn't be able to sleep
aging sucks
And people tell me I can't get calcific shoulder in early 30' but that's exactly when you might atart having issues
i find that random people diagnosing you on the internet are wrong
They appear from 30's to 60's afaik
They were my colleagues btw. They are like: "You are too young and in early 30's. You just have basic shoulder pain or pinched nerve"
I am surprised PSU works with just 150V in the grid
I could use some "IceyCold" though
. Showering my shoulder with freezing water helps
Most current PSUs work for anything between 100-250V or so with frequency officially in 50-60Hz range, in reality wider.
You are basically benefitting from PSUs being made to work in both US and EU (and all rest of the world) without any changes or switches like in past etc.
wonder why PSUs can do that, while LED lamps can't
question of regional market targeting I guess?
Costs much more to implement.
But basically needed for current spec desktop computer PSU with active PFC and good efficiency.
So the cost is already covered for good quality desktop PSU and is kind of free.
But not in LED lamp that is only sold in one area and not all over the world.
And has much simpler "PSU"
Hehe, Sam said they are willing to lose money.
"Better to lose money than to take no risks..." or some weird backwards logic.
Imagine buying most of world's RAM supplies in 2025 and then going bankrupt in 2026
Ubisoft is also doing some restructuring in Paris now.
"rupture conventionnelle collective"
some sort of mechanism that people can voluntarily* quit the company.
Win big or go bust hard as the method.
Betting the farm on LLM "AI":s conquering the world and them getting lot of money as the leader in tech.
My opinion is; shouldn't make shit games for a decade 🤣 (AC, Far Cry, ...) all the same formula with barely any innovation. Every 2-3 years. Yeah, do that for a long time. And you start losing money.
Hype train having taken off in the CEOs heads. With not lot of actual facts behind it.
Last "good" game I remember from Ubisoft was the latest Rainbow Six. Fun multiplayer.
No. CEO's are responsible to create the hype.
Self-feeding hype loop in the CEO circles.
CEOs are the ones feeding the hype, it's artificial af.
They are just salesman in the end when it comes to that 😛
You have to oversell whatever your company offers as a CEO it seems.
I guess it's one of the pro's/cons of working with investors. (Have to please them or lose investments).
Hype can lead to more investments.
You read my mind. Although I haven't played Rainbow Six, I loved older splinter cell games
Raidbox Six was reallyt solid multiuplayer.
In my opinion because of the mechanisms, different character with different gear that can do different things and the destructable maps.
Pandora Tomorrow ❤️
So you can go to the kitchen, one teammate opens up a wall to start shooting into the kitchen and others breach the door for example.
And as a defender, you are paranoid AF because the enemy can come from anywhere (if the room above you isn't protected, they can shotgun a whole in the floor and drop into your kitchen), but that's why you have cameras that can ride around (unless you get spotted and they shoot your camera).
So both sides have tools, to make tactical descisions, making it, in my book, a good tactical shooter.
But even on that, Ubisoft should have changed the name after last Rainbow Six 3 expansion.
Rainbox Six: Vegas and onwards have basically nothing to do with the first three games.
Rainbow Six is rooted in the universe imo.
It has the same tactical vibe from previous ranbow six.
You have riot shields to protect you against bullets (if you want).
Flashbangs, camera droids, all the fun stuff a SWAT team might have.
And the idea was a singleplayer.
But Ubisoft cut that and pushed game out the door as multiplayer and got lucky. It worked (they got away with it?)
First three were you commanding three squads of people, first in pre-combat command mode, then in FP with optional actual control of one of the operatives.
Then it got turned into pretty standard FPS.
With some "tactical" elements over then current other ones.
Ah, sorry Baldur. I started with Vegas actually.
Can confirm for my employer (most publicly traded stock in the country). They made people who worked 30 years for the company and know everything quit just so they can replace them with cheaper labor (competence is questionable) and then brag to investors how they cut down operational cost
But still, the squad is your team now. You need to work together. Especially in e-sport.
You plotted the advancement on wireframe map first, for all the squads, with various commands and synchronization options.
Then executed.
You could do the thing where you didn't do anything during the actual execution phase if you wanted.
And the squads and AI soldiers just completed the missions by themselves following the plan.
Also, Rainbow Six is from Tom Clancy no?
Why does it have the Tom Clancy name 🤔
because that's a writer.
Rainbow Six is a techno-thriller novel written by Tom Clancy and released on August 3, 1998. It is the second book to primarily focus on John Clark, one of the recurring characters in the Ryanverse, after Without Remorse (1993); it also features his son-in-law, Domingo "Ding" Chavez. Rainbow Six follows "Rainbow", a secret international countert...
So yeah, they can keep calling it.
The original world-wide special operations group in the original games was from that novel.
That was basically the only connection.
Although, I don't know what the link is between tom clancyu novel and the game besides "tactical". But so many games have swat and tactical aspect to it.
Ah cool. Gotcha.
The titular "Rainbox Six"
Ah, sorry, "Rainbow", with "Rainbox Six" being the leaders codename.
splinter cell is another tom clancy property. most of the novels are written by other authors though.
I really enjoyed splinter cell 😕
Always wondered why they didn't make a new game out of that. Been a while.
I would play a good splinter cell. Sneaking around in the dark. Or on pipes on the ceiling.
i think they've tried and they flopped
They kept moving them closer and closer to just basic FPS again, with worse and worse plots etc.
the old splinter cell games are some of my favorite stealth games
That's sad, it was a good stealth shooter imo.
yeah, mine too. I can't think of a game that comes close to how I felt playing the old ones.
And the playership went down and down and down as they milked the name dry.
With constantly worse games than the previous.
So stupid. The whole thing was stealth. And the usage of gadgets.
And then you shoot that one guard that is in the way 😛
they did make a anime a while ago, so I had hope.
Basically Exec level wanting to make the franchise move to wider audience.
Not catching that, and alienating the original audience.
With Rainbow Six, they got the new audience.
But none of my friends can tolerate the newer games after 3.
And we played lot of the earlier ones, both solo and in MP.
Ok, I think it was fun. Played tons of it (rainbox six multiplayer)
Because of that complete disconnect and being made into rather generic FPS.
With both Vegases
Yeah, but the MP one is basically just Counter Strike done better.
How many games let you do this.
You need a teammate with a hammer, to break it down. Or you can shoot holes though it. And the dude to the right has shield ready.
And every character is a class with "skills". But the skills are more tactical.
Yeah, it is good in its own niche.
But it isn't niche we like.
Yeah, it's major depart from original.
But the first three were you acting as counter terrorist units operative lead basically.
Planning and executing counter-terrorist ops for 8 operators in 1-3 teams in linear campaign where the missions tied together.
Then Vegases were just pretty standard FPS games with tactical sprinkles.
Yeah, I understand.
Is this rainbox six 1 from 1999?
Looks like a first person shooter 🤣
Completely different games per platform
I'm talking about the PC "base" original version.
That seems to be the Playstation version, which is most limited.
Ok, but it seems that in 1999 they already had first person shooters under the rainbox six flag.
yeah you controlled a squad of guys i think. and you could use first person view, but it wasn't controlled like an fps
it seems the one from 1998 is the one you talking about.
And that indeed looks totally different.
You could take control of single "body" if you wanted.
More of a simulation/management of a squad.
police quest: SWAT was another game that had tactical stuff
a huge divergence from the older police quest games
Mission planning with team tracks.
I have a feeling that there are modern games that do the same now ...
but they slip my mind atm.
And seems I misremembered, up to four teams.
police quest swat had a lot of video digitization rather than 3d
The pain of that planning view not showing windows properly...
So you think you direct the team to proceed down a corridor safely, but in fact there are huge windows to neighboring room with terrorists in it..
map control, right in the center of the screen.
You could switch to that 3D View to see them, but it was pain to check every wall in that, as stuff occluded other stuff so bad.
Ah, door kickers for example!
and a few other indie games that do something similar.
Ah, that is why I remember three teams, at least Rainbow Six 3 only had three.
While 1 had four, not going to check what 2 had.
Those are just map scroll controls, don't give tilt or like.
That 3D View gives all-white 3D-model without ceilings, but it was very janky to use.
I am trying to think of a tactical singeplayer game on PS2 where you had to talk to your squad through a headset, which came with the game.
And most of the time, they did the opposite of what you asked.
Player: "Take cover."
Squad: "Roget that, breaching door."
🤣
I said similar 😄
To be fair, a lot of games were janky back then 🤣
Rainbow Six 1-3 very much so.
In large part as the friendly/enemy "AI" wasn't anywhere near necessary level yet and caused so many "reality" breaking issues.
As in breaking the immersion, when the worlds best special operatives die to bad pathfinding etc.
Two classics were getting kind of stuck in wall while breaching a room, causing them to slowly inch into the doorway, getting shot in the process.
Or crossing already open doorway to get to the other side, to get ready to breach.
Is it ok to have 25 cells of 21700 in parallel? Looking to draw 25 amps so each cell only gets 1A through it.
Technically yes
You can end up with current imbalances though
What is the application?
And before connecting them, make sure to equalise
got a weird discord question
anyone else been having an issue where scrolling makes the chat section bug out and leave a section of text frozen in place
Why do I always see "Processing Vulkan shaders" for a few minutes before the game launches? I haven't changed my system at all, so it shouldn't have to recompile them.
Game updates, game shader updates, driver updates, missing shader cache, etc
Are you playing on Linux?
no but i do have a issue where if i hover my mouse over the textbox all the pixels freeze and dont update until i move my mouse off of it meaning i cant see what i type on my laptop
I never understood that. No matter what speed you have or if it's wifi or ethernet, Youtube sometimes lowers your video quality
Using ad-blocker?
Yeah but I can bet I saw this happening even without ad blockers
Adblock delay + programed delay if signed in + video specific delays = wtf
Yeah I have premium and fast internet.
Oooh I would absolutely love alternatives
It lacks so many features. It doesn’t even have recommendations for creators to make better quality videos.
Indeed
Or day I’ll build an alternative. Whether it can ever take off I’ve no idea.
Tons of ideas for a better experience though.
anyone seeking to build "The youtube killer" will fail. You need to build a better app that stands on it's own without being "the youtube killer".
Anything that is marketed as "popular thing killer" will fail
oh yeah. All those wow killers on the market. So many companies have succesfully competed against wow
Yes it would be a hobby. Finances not the priority. Then if it grows, it grows.
yeah UI is at a 22 year low right now lol
For me the priority is about standards. It’s not that hard to walk a creator through certain expectations.
p.s. the reason that the meme is "wow killer" is because people stopped saying "runescape killer" by about 2005-2006
Gamify it. Crate templates to save time etc
p.p.s. runescape is still top 5 mmo by the numbers lol
I’m curious if any Apple users are here. I wonder if going to a long ass hike tomorrow and tracking my activity. Maybe a lil sat nav too. If it will drain my phone as well as watch?
I have the older 13 pro max with recent ultra 2 watch.
My hiking time will be around 8-9 hours.
Game music slaps
For example
If my card died today I would go by the B550.
But im happy with my 6900xt
I imagine not. But nothing was happy about that game on release
Ya, its rough for pc parts
Ill play any garbage multi-player game as long as the friend group is good
Like rust is dog shit. But I like my play group
Diablo 3 and 4?
I went back to project diablo 2
Its stable and runs on my nas lol
I by all the games I can off of GOG and backup the offline installers on my nas
ok, dumb question time
can you migrate paid games from one game client to another?
i kinda figured
i have way too much hope these days i guess
You didn't buy the game, you bought a license for the game
And licenses are bound to the seller
yea true
i have somehow never pirated a game 🤣
i think youtube has kept me from doing it, i can just enjoy other people fucking around in the game for free
There is a small amount of games and launchers that will support that, but generally speaking, DRM systems prevent this.
The most common form of doing this is to just add a shortcut for the existing install to a different client
i've never spent a dime on EGS, kinda proud of that
They're really the same thing and the naming is a marketing term. Path tracing is just generally more intensive and in depth.
It's the same math and the same hardware running it on the gpu
Path tracing generally means it's implemented with a higher ray count, with a greater interaction depth and sometimes more complex surface interaction modeling
Google also pulling the same crap with search as they did with yt
oh that shit can fuck off
tempted to put some DVD ISOs on a usb or an external SSD
🤣
some of my music is from CDs i copied 20 years ago
oh i had to buy one a few years ago
yea my next case is going to either be a legendary one, or completely custom
i might just yank the disk drives out of my old dead tower to see if they still work
for some dumb reason an awful lot of our medical imaging system is still stored/transferred on disks
lol no
my last mri 100% did some hearing damage
it was one of the rapid MRI's
and one of my earplugs fell out
iirc nothing since it's non-ferrous
the worst part is just laying there
especially if you have to lay in a weird position
i mean, yes
there is a thing called an open MRI
if you're claustrophobic
it's way less anxiety inducing
still close to your face, but more like standing facing a wall than being stuffed into a trash can
you'd basically have to put a power line on it to make it react with anything
i've somehow never broken a bone or needed a metal implant
oh yea i'm waiting for it
don't tell me you got in a fight
Microslop teams is actocorrecting when I disabled autocorrect in winslop.
Great, can't do any work on laptop because corporate network is down
Karma for what? Are you implying I am a bad person?
I am just an empoyee. It's almost impossible to work for an 100% ethical company these days
You could count such companies on your fingers
Who here likes nested ternary operator.
@night girder do you have any experience with Voigtländer?
i love being american and seeing how we've butchered different languages over time
Yep, we leave no language unbutchered, not even our own
z?:y?:x best
