I dont like vr hurts my head but hey little brother does

tribal kraken
#

Did some racing and flight simulators, but just not comfortable to use

inland sentinel

And he doesn't have a ps5 hes on ps4 so why not

#

I did originally give him the option of a ps5 or the mq3 he chose the vr

tribal kraken
#

Only thing I liked about the VR, was depth immersion for like braking points in sim racing

I like the vr ufc ganes those were cool

Good workout too if yoy actually use it to train not just throw random punches

And hand tracking isnt horrible on the mq

#

@visual tree you were looking for HW for servers?

Hetzner.

I was thinking of checking websites which sell used hardware

Mainly enterprise kind

Hetzner is German server solution. So I assume they sell the stuff they replace.

Ok, also costumer. But filter that stuff out by location or something?

worst is the hetzner website performance...

Isnt that just rented "root" server, it lists the hardware it runs on? Not selling the physical HW

Seems so... if website loads again for me wtf.

I've looked up some Hetzner because they have some server rooms in Finland too

I would go Mint over Ubuntu tbh
I've used both and I had a better time on mint, was my daily driver for a good while
Mint is Debian based and uses a lot of Ubuntu packages so it gets all the benefits of Ubuntu

For gaming a lot of people recommend Bazite
I haven't used it but its based on Fedora which is really popular. My girlfriends machine is running it and we did have 1 issue but was able to fix it

modern technology follows many laws of diminishing returns, often with much higher wattage draw for only a very small amount of performance increase, for example 50 series is basically 40 series but at higher wattage, it basically brute forces its way to higher performance but really offers nothing special in terms of efficiency improvement, also no suprise given its on the same tsmc node from what I can tell

sharp matrix

Also you can only go so hard until bad things start to happen, which they already are, burning and melting power connectors for one

Overall it doesnt look like the hardware was properly engineered for how much power these cards can draw now

pure karma

glossy glacier

Saving on power and temperature

sharp matrix

True, because silicon always has slight differences it would make sense to supply extra voltage to keep everything stable in general, even if a specific chip didnt need it

pure karma
#

i feel like for cpu's its way more noticible

#

like my old cpu has no care running tripple the rated wattage for 50% extra multicore performance

where as doing that for a GPU is questionably even possible

glossy glacier

#

There should be proper regulation on sim cards/esims, like clearly stating when and if it throttles and by how much.

jagged snow
#

In a rare consumer friendly move the US actually has that now

#

It's actually been incredible
We have it for mobile plans and home internet

pure karma
#

i have 60GB its stated here in canada aswell

and has been for a while

jagged snow
visual tree
#

I pay around €10 for a mobile plan (10.000 minutes and SMS + 15 GB per month) + €33 for 1 Gbit/ 500 Mbit fiber

#

There is a mobile plan with unlimited data although I don't really need it but it probably has a data cap like you mentioned after which they lower your speed

jagged snow
#

I'm jealous of that internet
Pricing here is 100usd/month for 1000/50 and 110usd/month for 1000/1000

#

60/month for 100/100

visual tree
#

I picked the cheapest mobile plan because 10.000 minutes and SMS is just too much for me and 15 GB per month is more than enough since I am connected to WiFi 90% of the time

pure karma
#

1500/1000 is 120$ here (85$ USD)

visual tree
#

Guess it's the same everywhere. Mobile plans are cheap while the internet is obviously more expensive because of infrastructure cost

jagged snow
#

Internet is more expensive because there is a lack of competition

visual tree
#

That too. Don't know much about US market status but heard Comcast covers a lot of areas and there is no alternative

jagged snow
#

I have never lived anywhere with more than two providers avaliable

visual tree
#

I live in city which has 3 providers: 2 of them offer fiber while the 3rd offers cable

pure karma
#

i only know of bell and rogers personally

#

rogers is mostly targetting buisnesses and goes down regularly

#

bell is just here

visual tree
#

Wouldn't want to move to cable although they offer 2 Gbit/s because bandwidth is shared with your neighbours and you never know what your average speed might be

#

Fiber also shares bandwidth with your neighbours but the capacity is much higher compared to cable

#

Heard people on cable who had 1 Gbit/s before and when they wanted to renew a contract, they only got 300 Mbit/s because of oversubscription issue

jagged snow
#

And my understanding is that the bandwidth sharing on fiber is structured quite differently

visual tree
#

There is a feeder fiber cable going from the central office to the fiber distribution cabinet (usually per district) and the bandwidth is then split to 1:32 or 1:64 ratio

#

Bandwidth is dictated by what type of card you have inserted into OLT in the central office

#

Here is a picture of OLT in my city when it was first installed

For that third in my list, first in yours, you would have had to assign manual IP in 192.168.0.x range to the PC with 255.255.255.0 mask, and then connect to 192.168.0.239

So from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254, but not that .239, for the computer.

# twin dew So you didn't really follow any of the instructions... Just fucked around tried ...

Sorry if I didn't explain myself very well its just been a bit overwhelming

I've tried to follow the user guide but just haven't been able to
When DHCP is enabled in the modem and the switch is plugged into that and my laptop the switch IP will not appear in the modems dashboard but the laptops does.

When I ran the utility was the same setup with laptop to switch to modem

I tired setting the laptops IP to an unused IP in that range, think I did 192.168.0.40/24
I haven't tried Changing the mask though

twin dew

Ah, sorry, no, I fucked up

dire igloo

Their "good reputation" is largely from consumers who can't tell good from bad for lack of experience and in small part from enterprise customers who just buy their stuff in bulk through third parties

Two major contributors to the first part: a longstanding history in the tech scene with good products many years ago as well as a lot of advertising in esport

thin trout

I am saying that as someone who has owned about 10 logi mice over many years and a few webcams 😄

Half of them (including a second gen g pro wireless) broke the left clicker before their time.

I have a plan to use chinese universal hall-effect 5V joystics, and Teensy board to control them as USB joysticks, then just model and 3D print the frame on top them, and use cheap micro swithces. But its been a sitting project

But yeah if there could be some regulations around sims, like as soon you plug one in it tells you the real capacity cuz I'm sure the actual telecom operators don't need to rely on scamming.

# dire igloo And if we were to switch all our employees from 20€ boards to 80€ boards, that's...

and how many taxpayer euros pay their salaries for 10 years?

At 60 eur a piece you're talking about 300 plus employees, at 50k euros a year that's 15 million euros on salary.

So the 20k expense has to increase productivity by 0.13% to break even. You don't think that's realistic?

If you're not sure if you're gonna be operating next month, that's one thing - but if you're the german government, you operate as if you'll still need basic tools like keyboards for years to come. In that circumstance you can't afford not to buy decent tools. They increase productivity by 10x more than buying crap tools saves.

Is there some easy way to have a client on a phone to receive notifications in local network?
I would imagine it won't be nice for battery life without your way-to-go notification services (that don't actually even need an app of a phone really...), but I want to make a local temperature monitoring with notifications

sand saddle
#

But my 12GB esim is 5/12 and working

jagged snow
#

(At least OS-level notifications)

#

(Coming from an external service)

#

It's possible to have an app poll an endpoint and trigger notifications locally when desired but this only works if the app is in the foreground.

#

Apple and google provide the services for free still
But delivering notifications does require you to host your own backend with certs for APN/FCM

soft bloom
soft bloom
jagged snow
#

It's a service 🤷‍♂️ You have to be on their platform, you have to apply to get the certs, and apple only provides it if you pay the developer fee.

soft bloom
#

I mean, you can get a certificate and send notification only when you need to, without having 24/7 server(service) running in 'cloud' or anywhere

#

you send request to them - not the other way around. that's what I am clarifying

twin dew
#

But now I'm sad... I lost my128MB (not typo) USB-stick today... And might have either dropped it into waste, or vacuumed it up...

jagged snow
#

Oh, gotcha
By "service" I just meant that they host a backend that you can send requests to

twin dew
#

Put the new BIOS on it, went to the server cabinet, noticed I hadn't remembered to vacuum the filters in ages, did that, didn't find the key anymore.
Basically dropped it from my hand to where-ever when switched to vacuuming preparations.

#

And I had 150l trashbag half full of plastic waste right next to that...

#

Might go through that tomorrow and move everything one by one into another bag.

#

Which is why the vacuum itself isn't likely destination, but I could just have completely missed that for some reason.

#

Been using it mainly for BIOS updates etc.
So not lot of writes overall.

jagged snow
#

Counterintuitively a lot of older silicon(because of larger node and not age) is inherently more durable than what we can make today

twin dew
#

That too, as why I was using it for firmware updates.

jagged snow
#

Nuclear dearmament has been a good thing but the loss of highly enriched fuels really limits tech in so many ways

twin dew
#

US has restarted production of RTG-grade plutonium.

jagged snow
twin dew
jagged snow
#

And highly enriched fuel has a lot of potential for terrestrial uranium power systems as well

twin dew
#

And for terrestrial RTGs, you can use shorter half-life stuff that just gets switched at intervals.

jagged snow
#

I'm talking about using highly enriched uranium or re-enriched fuel in traditional presurrized or boiling water reactors to extract far more energy from the fuel and potentially lower costs

#

Sorry for the lack of clarity

#

Yeah, the production is so low that we essentially have to reserve it for missions to outer solar system
Even europa clipper didn't get a cut, had to make do with a smaller power budget and a ton of mass going to PV

twin dew
#

No, James Webb is glued and completely unmaintainable, as the weight budget was completely used up from the start, and all weight overruns caused major issues.

#

"We have launch rocket that can lift X kg, we shall design the satellite to use it all". With that budget split from the start to various things, with no overrun allowance.

#

And that original weight budget split way underestimated some subsystems weights, like the solar shield.

#

Lot of wishes, but the final design has everything "extra" removed, including using glue instead of bolts etc. where-ever possible.

#

To level of:

The review identified that Webb launch and deployment had 344 potential single-point failures – tasks that had no alternative or means of recovery if unsuccessful, and therefore had to succeed for the telescope to work.

#

That launch was ESAs contribution, in return for observation time.

#

So split locked in before even the real design was started.

@twin dew My ISP only specifies using 100 vlan id for pppoe. First time I saw vlan id priority and wonder if it makes any difference

tribal kraken
#

Central heating on this house can use diesel or wood. Diesel can work with help of generator if grid is down, generator also helps if wood is used by running the water pump on the central heating. Solar panels are kinda meh as currently no battery for them and they are configured so that they are offline if grid is down

#

Also on addition to fireplace at central heating theres 3 other fireplaces, big brick oven used for bread which stores lot of heat on it even after the fire is out. Then Sauna and a just a normal small fireplace

soft bloom
#

Meanwhile somebody has to watch the kids in apartments with no water, no heating, no power...

#

Which is more likely to 'survive': gas, liquid or solid?
In gas every molecule is in it for itself, randomly bumping into each other, having momentary exchange, probably never to meet again. Not caring much about gravity or electric charges of each other. Always trying to take all available space.
In fluid they are more closely interacting neighbours, but still allowing for many changes, following shape of the container, sometimes forming more rigid surface bonds.
And in a solid body, resisting external change, in a rigid structure... Kinda boring.
But what is survival? If stone is grinded into sand - did it die? Did it evolve? If a water droplet went full circle of vapor, snowflake, compressed ice sheet, back to water, does that count as survival?

visual tree
#

Or someone did this as a joke and lied the electrician did it

the nvme has a single partition.

But Debian team is annoying and doesn't include XXHash64 kernel module in the installer...
I need to do partial install, load the xxhash_generic module from that partial install, then create the actual file system, move the already installed files over, and continue...
As CRC32C is just bad, and SHA256 and BLAKE2b are just so much slower, even with AVX2 acceleration, as they are cryptographic hashes.

#

Or CPU SHA256 instructions too.

#

(Just btrfs things)

#

xxhash64 "only" takes double the time of crc32.

#

Where as in the test CPU, Intels inbuild SHA256 instruction took 68 times longer per 4k block.

#

Next thing is to switch router/firewall away from using FirewallD as extra layer, and using NFTables directly instead...

So, for some reason, the bluetti's quirk striked when it was really not the time for it...
I think I was writing before bout how it did a few times seemingly discharge only to display 100% when plugged in
Today it was under standard load of network stuff and then an hour later after checking 60% charge it turned off and was not responding. Having no other ac power source (soon it will be full 24h without power) other then identical unit, it did turn on and display 100% again, reporting 0W charge but drawing 36W from the other unit (which is fairly unusual powe= draw, since it usually is 150-250W when actively charging).
Not sure what that is, since after last time it did power off and display 100% immediately it did work successful y providing power from it's battery for at least couple weeks now.
Some error in battery readings? Or could this be deeper?

#

The opt for non personalised feeds is pretty clear. Just sad it doesn't included personalised ads.

bronze jasper
night girder
#

I meant literal.

#

The legal definition of dark patterns.

#

I have my ideas what dark patterns could be, but that doesn't mean the EU see it as a dark pattern 😉

bronze jasper
#

Deceptive patterns (also known as “dark patterns”) are tricks used in websites and apps that make you do things that you didn't mean to, like buying or signing up for something. For example:

#

www.deceptive.design source

night girder
#

I think EU kept it open for interpretation on purpose.

bronze jasper
#

yeah it's kind of a loose definition. there isn't a strict one. that's why examples are often best practice there. "burying the lead" is one that's not as obvious as the others, since it's only tricking the user into scrolling down further which isn't really that big of an action

night girder
#

You have two choices it seems. Continue with personalised ads. Or ask again in a week.
It's possible that if Fight or Flight clicks continue, they get option to opt out of personalised ads and it will never be asked again.
But if the app keeps asking it every week ... then I would say it's scummy design.

dire igloo
#

Dark patterns on online interfaces of online platforms are practices that materially distort or impair, either on purpose or in effect, the ability of recipients of the service to make autonomous and informed choices or decisions. Those practices can be used to persuade the recipients of the service to engage in unwanted behaviours or into undesired decisions which have negative consequences for them. Providers of online platforms should therefore be prohibited from deceiving or nudging recipients of the service and from distorting or impairing the autonomy, decision-making, or choice of the recipients of the service via the structure, design or functionalities of an online interface or a part thereof. This should include, but not be limited to, exploitative design choices to direct the recipient to actions that benefit the provider of online platforms, but which may not be in the recipients’ interests, presenting choices in a non-neutral manner, such as giving more prominence to certain choices through visual, auditory, or other components, when asking the recipient of the service for a decision.

It should also include repeatedly requesting a recipient of the service to make a choice where such a choice has already been made, making the procedure of cancelling a service significantly more cumbersome than signing up to it, or making certain choices more difficult or time-consuming than others, making it unreasonably difficult to discontinue purchases or to sign out from a given online platform allowing consumers to conclude distance contracts with traders, and deceiving the recipients of the service by nudging them into decisions on transactions, or by default settings that are very difficult to change, and so unreasonably bias the decision making of the recipient of the service, in a way that distorts and impairs their autonomy, decision-making and choice. However, rules preventing dark patterns should not be understood as preventing providers to interact directly with recipients of the service and to offer new or additional services to them. Legitimate practices, for example in advertising, that are in compliance with Union law should not in themselves be regarded as constituting dark patterns. Those rules on dark patterns should be interpreted as covering prohibited practices falling within the scope of this Regulation to the extent that those practices are not already covered under Directive 2005/29/EC or Regulation (EU) 2016/679.

dire igloo
# jagged snow

Yes, this is a dark pattern. The following sections of the EU definition undoubtedly apply here:

Providers of online platforms should therefore be prohibited from deceiving or nudging recipients of the service and from distorting or impairing the autonomy, decision-making, or choice of the recipients of the service via the structure, design or functionalities of an online interface or a part thereof.

It should also include repeatedly requesting a recipient of the service to make a choice where such a choice has already been made [...] or making certain choices more difficult or time-consuming than others

dire igloo
night girder
#

Wait wait we don't know that right?

dire igloo
night girder
#

What happens if you click "continue"?

#

If you go to a screen that lets the user select what ads they want (personlised or not), it seems legal?

dire igloo
#

enabling ads allows you to control which data they collect and to block ads

dire igloo
night girder
#

No.

#

It just tells the user what personalised ads are.

dire igloo
#

but I guess, yeah
it's possible that the "disable all" option is hidden behind the "continue" button.
but it's also possible that the "continue" button is considered consent to data collection

night girder
#

If you click continue, and the next screen is "enable/disable personalised ads".

#

Then the user consents to using personalised ads.

#

If then the pop-up never appears, there is no dark pattern afaik.

#

If the pop-up keeps popping up untill you enabled personalised ads ...

dire igloo
night girder
#

And if the user ignores the pop up, personalised ads aren't turned on. YT should be fine, probably.

#

It's not like if YT (google, Alphabet) doesn't have a legal team figuring this all out beforehand 😉

dire igloo
#

which is a dark pattern

#

they nudge you towards clicking "continue"

#

doesn't matter what that button does, it's manipulative

night girder
#

I am purely speaking "is it legal in the eyes of the EU law or not ..." (DSA in this case).

#

And if you go to court, what will be the outcome (% wise).

dire igloo
# night girder Fine legally in EU when it comes to DSA and the screenshot.

that's exactly what I'm talking about.
Tell me that this section does not apply to that popup:

Providers of online platforms should therefore be prohibited from deceiving or nudging recipients of the service and from distorting or impairing the autonomy, decision-making, or choice of the recipients of the service via the structure, design or functionalities of an online interface or a part thereof.

night girder
#

I am mixed. On the one hand I think "YT isn't poor and dumb to not respect EU laws at this point ..." on the other hand... "Well, maybe YT knows they get away with it anyway. And the fine is just pocket money for them".

#

You can always report it to EU (gotta look up what instance) and let them know what's going on.

fair

#

tho I agree with you, it's not clear which part of the regulation applies

night girder
#

Did you know there is a database public with DSA - Statements of reasons?

#

Oh nvm. Though it was something else.

#

The Digital Services Act (DSA), obliges providers of hosting services to inform their users of the content moderation decisions they take and explain the reasons behind those decisions in so-called statements of reasons.

#

Though it was EU ruling on DSA cases.

#

I was looking up, how we can actually report stuff like this. If even possible.

#

Found it!

Users of an online service who believe that the service's practices violate the European Digital Services Act (DSA) may lodge a complaint with the Competition Authority (Autorité de la concurrence).
