Did some racing and flight simulators, but just not comfortable to use
And he doesn't have a ps5 hes on ps4 so why not
I did originally give him the option of a ps5 or the mq3 he chose the vr
Only thing I liked about the VR, was depth immersion for like braking points in sim racing
I like the vr ufc ganes those were cool
Good workout too if yoy actually use it to train not just throw random punches
And hand tracking isnt horrible on the mq
5425MHz is the normal PBO for that CPU? And how is that 3800MHz 5070Ti cooled?
just 3 fans, I'm going to get the MSI Gaming X Trio edition
Sicne it actually uses less power than the 2070 Super it produces less heat
Thats just never going to work, with air you will get to 3,2GHz with little luck on silicon lottery. 3,8GHz is subzero cooling category@lyric wagon
...
that's exactly what I linked you afaik.
Hetzner is German server solution. So I assume they sell the stuff they replace.
That looks like some kind of subscription service
Ok, also costumer. But filter that stuff out by location or something?
... =_=
English hard today?
www.hetzner.com - check it yourself. Or don't 🤷♂️
I will, the image just confused me because of "€ max. per month"
Or their auction works differently compared to ours which confused me in the first place
worst is the hetzner website performance...
Isnt that just rented "root" server, it lists the hardware it runs on? Not selling the physical HW
Seems so... if website loads again for me wtf.
I've looked up some Hetzner because they have some server rooms in Finland too
Yeah indeed
But atm run everything at home
That's what I noticed. Hope they actually sell physical hardware
Guess I'll check when the website returns 🙂
Ryzen™ 9 7950X3D box with 128GB for 104€ month there
Running dedi servers for games been one of hobbys too. Light servers like multiple Valheims for friends
If they buy me a beer when we see its enough payment 😄
eh... I got piles of projects. All on my todo list. But never done 🤣
First focus, backing up my NAS.
In information technology, a backup, or data backup is a copy of computer data taken and stored elsewhere so that it may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. The verb form, referring to the process of doing so, is "back up", whereas the noun and adjective form is "backup". Backups can be used to recover data after its loss fr...
Then transfering iCloud to NAS.
Then gettting immich (FOSS photo app) back up and running on NAS in docker.
Then setting up the ThinkCentre to be a Firewall.
Then allow my phone to connect to NAS from outside network through the firewall.
Great, now even citizens use AI for fraud....
He used AI to make the meat look raw and uncooked
Smart.
If corpos can use it to scam us.
We can use it to scam corpos no?
We going backwards now! 🤣
Except 3060 will probably cost more compared to when it was released knowing nvidia.....
RTX 3060 Nostalgia edition - €800
Screw this timeline.....
Cannot wait for the GTX 1080 to be relaunched aswell
but with half the die size
gtz 1080 ai Edition
with same fps in most game (*with dlss) and newer memory technology (*half the chips and vram but on a newer bandwidth control)
boosted with latest ai acceleration technologies (*which is needed and fully loaded with dlss, *you can't use ai acceleration api because you do not have a Quadro professional license)
If I want a 3060 I can just buy a 5060, basically the same performance
But soon you might not be able to buy a 5060 anymore, because of VRAM chip availability.
While 3060 used VRAM made on older fab node, in different fabs than current gen stuff.
Just make a 5060 lame edition then 🙃
Designing new chip revision with memory controllers for different memory tech is expensive.
And takes significant time.
Even if the kitbashing and validation was free and instant, making the new photomask set would take time and be very expensive.
What a scammy try
How many Opera variants are we up to now?
Yeah exactly. That was the whole point.
Ram shortage. Let's go back to 3060 and milk it out.
They can't make a 5060 and keep shareholders happy. They expect more profit this year. So Nvidia gets creative.
atleast 3 no?
there opera then GX and now whatever that ai slop is
Opera Air and Opera Neon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_(web_browser)#Other_versions
🤣
More apparently
Base, GX, Air, Mini, One? Neon?
Still fewer then fire foxes
Nvidia now launching rtx 3060 ai slop edition $900
But itll be enhanced with ai slop and cost more than the original 3060
Same price as the original, just with x4 framemoney - gen enabled
Hey guys. I wanna play the latest CoD and it’s insisting I update bios.
I cannot figure out which drive it should be. I’ve looked in them and am getting things I’m not expecting.
easier to find in windows, lol
if you need to update your bios to play a game the game is not doing things right cause why tf would you ever need that
usually its only secure boot you need?
Something to do with secure boot
then just turn it on?
I found the drive.
unless your living in 1864 it should be on any recent motherboard release in the last like decade at this point
I’m a lil worried about this. In the past it bricked my mobo
Now it wants me to backup bitlocker settings. lol
Going round in circles here.
I hate windows, I really do
even following their own guides I get nowhere
simply suspend or create new external key bitlocker in windows and then update and save your not pin password somewhere and delete pin
if you don't use bitlocker then it's easier
I don’t remember ever turning that on tbh
Apparently a key is stored on ms website and the device name is a laptop and not my pc
Check if your C drive has a lock icon next to the drive icon in file explorer > this PC
If not your drive shouldn't be encrypted
If it has a lock, next steps depend on if you have win home or pro
@cursive fable when i reinstalled w10 on my SSD recently i used the playbook atlas, they do W11 and they remove all the bloat. Still if i need to change OS i probably gonna go on linux
I'll take a look, cheers!
Do you have a distro in mind?
But with 4x enabled itll be 1300
Nvidia now launching rtx 3060 ai slop edition 1300, its a real bargain
Right now i'm on W10 and staying as much as i can but if i need to switch ubuntu or mint were recommanded to me granted i am not experienced ( i can figure out tutorial or searching for help/answers on internet but no fix)
only amd can get away with keeping a 2 generation old platform alive with new product
Arch! ... Duh! 😏
I would go Mint over Ubuntu tbh
I've used both and I had a better time on mint, was my daily driver for a good while
Mint is Debian based and uses a lot of Ubuntu packages so it gets all the benefits of Ubuntu
For gaming a lot of people recommend Bazite
I haven't used it but its based on Fedora which is really popular. My girlfriends machine is running it and we did have 1 issue but was able to fix it
I really like ubuntu, I daily it for my laptop and my work machine
I've messed around with bazzite a good bit and set some other people up with it and the experience was nothing short of flawless unless you play games with kernel anticheat
Microsoft starting just turning Bitlocker on for devices signed in with a Microsoft account
I've had too many customer with lost data because of Microsoft...
Kernal anticheat is just a Linux thing in general though
Sucks but it is what it is
i feel like linux usage for windows people has the same kind of stigma of an "Apple person" switching to windows and thinking it's basically in the same place it was in 1995
Yeah, I'm aware
Hoping we'll eventually see some improvement on that front
It's easy enough to avoid if you don't play competative shooters or mobas
I recon it will come down to Linux reaching a certain threshold of desktop market share then 1 big company will support Linux and everyone will
Won't be for a long time if ever
I'm sure there will be a tipping point at some point
I doubt it'll ever be what windows is today, honestly
Hppe I'm wrong on that, at least in terms of scope
got a discord question
can you pop up more than 1 client on the same account to have 2 discord servers open and visible at the same time?
afaik yes
For sure with 3rd party clients that I'd never use
Not sure about the default one
i know that's googleable, but i figured someone here might have firsthand experience
Probably
There 3 native discord clients
Discord
Discord PTB
Discord Canary
then 3rd party ones
Better discord
Vencord
Vesktop
when you say native, does that mean owned & operated by discord?
Game anticheats have started to monitor MB BIOS versions too, and don't allow versions that have known Secure Boot vulnerabilities in them.
Which would allow injecting hacks into the system in ways that the kernel mode anticheat couldn't catch.
ngl just about every game i've seen that deploys anticheat is something i have 0 interest in playing 🤣
oh wait that sounds kinda bad 🤣
NOT because i'm a cheater
the implementations of anticheat that i've seen don't seem to have much of an impact on cheaters, but pushes potential customers like me away over its intrusiveness+ineffectiveness
I have seen it mostly on laptops, not yet on desktop
that sucks, first thing i always turn off for laptops especially is bitlocker, because honestly if a hacker makes it onto my system to steal my data I kind of deserve it
though maybe I should be more conscious of my data security, especially with things like banking information, actually now that I think about it should see what security steps I could implement for some of my more important data that I really wouldnt want a hacker to exploit
I can see why they turn it on on laptops and would actually support it.
If they told the user about at any point during setup/installation, which they don't, leading to many confused users and data loss if even the smallest thing triggers the tpm and it rufuses to release the key
yeah thats one of the reasons i turn bitlocker off, because in some cases it lock you out of your data and refuse to release the key, it can happen, then all of that data you cant access anymore
Same for any new Windows 10/11 install when there is TPM 2.0.
Even if you don't log into MS Account, the drive is encrypted, but the protection just isn't activated.
Need to be disabled in Settings, Privacy & Security, Device Encryption
yea just had to deal with that BS
relative had a garbo 128gb ssd in their laptop & it was root canal level of pain to switch out
it'll be fun to see how long their timetec ram will last 🤣
And the dumbest thing is on home you can't do anything but turn it on/off.
Because it's "device encryption" not bitlocker, and bitlocker is pro and up only, and thus you have no bitlocker tools to pause the encryption or export the key on home
G fucking G MS
You can?
You just toggle that slider at that location I wrote off.
And it unencrypts the drive.
Sry, autocorrect removed the negation
Turning On/Off is the only thing you can do
i find it hilarious that i have a system that doesn't really break 400W and it counts as still top of the line
modern technology follows many laws of diminishing returns, often with much higher wattage draw for only a very small amount of performance increase, for example 50 series is basically 40 series but at higher wattage, it basically brute forces its way to higher performance but really offers nothing special in terms of efficiency improvement, also no suprise given its on the same tsmc node from what I can tell
looks good 0 errors, fingers crossed should be good to go
lol yup, got my cpu on eco mode & 4090 limited to 300W, and it's still above 5080 performance
yeah should be, 4090 has great undervolting potential, not that alot of users take advantage of that, as desktop users typically only care about highest performance possible, those let the wattage flow indeed
haven't even undervolted it 🤣 might take a stab at it
God I hope
Gonna be using it as a NAS, Nextcloud and Jellyfin server
Just gotta figure out if I wanna set it all up under something like proxmox, TrueNAS or manually setup everything manually on a Ubuntu server install
yea power draws are getting kinda out of hand
i mean the matrix 5090 literally draws 800W OOB
Just a bit yes
And I finally got to doing first VM upgrade from Debian 12 to 13...
The 5090 is clearly the worst offender, while i understand nvidia had to do it for the sake of performance, but its clearly going hard on diminishing returns now
iv nerver tried undervolting because it just sounds like asking for trouble not supplying enough voltage for a component to work corectly but idk i guess its just the oposite of common sense in this context
Also you can only go so hard until bad things start to happen, which they already are, burning and melting power connectors for one
Overall it doesnt look like the hardware was properly engineered for how much power these cards can draw now
just the usual pushing beyond the limit and increasing the limits of existing standards only after the obvious happens
Its made to handle it, it basically just results in the core clocks running lower to be stable, so nothing necessarily bad can happen
All silicon of course has different stable points, silicon lottery, etc
Not sure how common golden samples still are on the newest nodes
Because no two parts are the same manufactureres almost always supply a bit extra voltage to keep all chips working. UV is just reducing this additional voltage to find the minimum a specific chip needs
Saving on power and temperature
True, because silicon always has slight differences it would make sense to supply extra voltage to keep everything stable in general, even if a specific chip didnt need it
i feel like golden sampels arent as golden for gpu's
i feel like for cpu's its way more noticible
like my old cpu has no care running tripple the rated wattage for 50% extra multicore performance
where as doing that for a GPU is questionably even possible
Increased binning and nvidia hard capping their stuff has an influence too
I suggest to use latest version
newer memory and cpu have more ways in which it must be tested and have some optimizations that discard some part of the tests
And second VM upgraded to Trixie.
Maybe I will even get the hypervisor upgraded tomorrow.
Only my VPN LXC had problems with the upgrade introduced. Everything else just worked.
Great yet another 5090 variant
One of those things that has been possible for a long time but never needed because of cost and complexity until we got these insanely power-hungry cards
Lucky me it wasn’t turned on. I won’t use TFA on my iPhone either.
I used to work there. Many a disappointing story.
Like somebody dying and family members can’t access photos or contacts such as friends of the deceased.
Even more inconvenient for the living. Imagine losing all your contacts? lol
There should be proper regulation on sim cards/esims, like clearly stating when and if it throttles and by how much.
In a rare consumer friendly move the US actually has that now
It's actually been incredible
We have it for mobile plans and home internet
theres places where its not stated how much data a mobile plan is???
i have 60GB its stated here in canada aswell
and has been for a while
In the states it used to be the case that "unlimited" plans would have 10GB or 20GB of "high speed" data and then they'd throttle you to unusable speeds of Kb/s or just a few Mb/s
I pay around €10 for a mobile plan (10.000 minutes and SMS + 15 GB per month) + €33 for 1 Gbit/ 500 Mbit fiber
There is a mobile plan with unlimited data although I don't really need it but it probably has a data cap like you mentioned after which they lower your speed
I'm jealous of that internet
Pricing here is 100usd/month for 1000/50 and 110usd/month for 1000/1000
60/month for 100/100
I picked the cheapest mobile plan because 10.000 minutes and SMS is just too much for me and 15 GB per month is more than enough since I am connected to WiFi 90% of the time
1500/1000 is 120$ here (85$ USD)
Guess it's the same everywhere. Mobile plans are cheap while the internet is obviously more expensive because of infrastructure cost
Internet is more expensive because there is a lack of competition
That too. Don't know much about US market status but heard Comcast covers a lot of areas and there is no alternative
I have never lived anywhere with more than two providers avaliable
I live in city which has 3 providers: 2 of them offer fiber while the 3rd offers cable
i only know of bell and rogers personally
rogers is mostly targetting buisnesses and goes down regularly
bell is just here
Wouldn't want to move to cable although they offer 2 Gbit/s because bandwidth is shared with your neighbours and you never know what your average speed might be
Fiber also shares bandwidth with your neighbours but the capacity is much higher compared to cable
Heard people on cable who had 1 Gbit/s before and when they wanted to renew a contract, they only got 300 Mbit/s because of oversubscription issue
And my understanding is that the bandwidth sharing on fiber is structured quite differently
There is a feeder fiber cable going from the central office to the fiber distribution cabinet (usually per district) and the bandwidth is then split to 1:32 or 1:64 ratio
Bandwidth is dictated by what type of card you have inserted into OLT in the central office
Here is a picture of OLT in my city when it was first installed
Ah yeah looks like I did download a legacy version lol.
I run another test tonight on v11.6
I wish I had fiber again 😭
When I lived at my mothers I got the house upgraded to FTTP and was paying like $180AUD for 1Gbit down 400Mbit up
That price has come down since then but since moving out I'm stuck on FTTN on copper cables so old they max out at 50/20
I ❤️ NBN 🇦🇺
we have FTTH with 400/200 for 50€/mo, could upgrade to 1000/500 for 90€/mo
I had FTTN (VDSL) before switching to fiber and max bandwidth was around 80 Mbit/s download and 35 Mbit/s upload
And before 2016, I had ADSL. I am not going to mention bandwidth I had.....
Although I gotta admit it's a miracle how copper managed to handle broadband until now. It was designed for telephone only in the first place
Oh god my friend was stuck with ADSL up until maybe 2021 or 2022
He only got off ADSL by moving house lol
I remember we would try to play games at his house and bandwidth would drop to like a few hundred bytes
looks techy, so yeah
idk wtf it does tho
The doohicky 4000
it doesnt look like you have a closed loop
Yellow connector goes on the exposed terminal on the near side of the power source to close the circuit
proctologists are back-end engineers.
that is all.
I should do this one right
Depends on your income and what you need
As an Australian I would kill for $45 1000/100 😭
$93AUD for 100/20 💪
I might be able to talk a friend into splitting that 8gig bill, and we selfhost all the things with it, esp since power is 11c/kwh
I'm gonna try self hosting on our maxxed out super high speed Australian 50/20 internet
I need fiber...
Even the 1000/1000 would be enough for self hosting
8gig would be CRISP though, chefs kiss
phehe;
I opened the window for 10 minutes and gpu got so colder then 25C which is apparently the minimal temperature it expects to ever have, so fan control ramped fans to 100% for absolutely no need
Its bee kinda cold outside for the holidays, down to -30°C. Usually temps in the staircase where my server and gaming PC radiator are exhausting, drop to +10°C when outside is that cold. That staircase is not heated anyway, just insulated and heat runs in when doors open. But now ambent in there is near +20°C and coolants stay around +25°C. Maybe because I've found time to play and the gaming pc pushes heat in there
I'm about to lose my mind
I just cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong
I have a Netgear GS108E V4 Switch and just cannot connect to the management interface
Does the network have some form of DHCP server?
Did you use the provided discovery tool?
Or are you trying to connect to it when you only have the switch and computer directly connected to each other, with no DHCP server in the mix?
So which variant of the chapter 2 are you trying to do?
https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/GS108Ev4/GS108Ev4_UM_EN.pdf
Basic possibilities:
1: DHCP with NetGear utility
2: DHCP with DHCP-server assignments (not in manual)
3: Direct connect with manual IP assignment on PC
I've tried connecting with only my laptop and the switch together
I tired running the discovery tool however I did have to do ./tool name --appimage-extract to get it to run but it found nothing
I tried manually assigning an IP on the same subnet
Tried disabling DHCP on my modem (Big mistake even devices with reserved IPs could no longer access it)
Idk what else been fucking around trying to get it to work
So you didn't really follow any of the instructions...
Just fucked around tried things in wrong order.
Connect the switch both to that modem, and your laptop, then run that utility.
Or check the modems DHCP allocations to see which IP the switch got, and connect directly.
For that third in my list, first in yours, you would have had to assign manual IP in 192.168.0.x range to the PC with 255.255.255.0 mask, and then connect to 192.168.0.239
So from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254, but not that .239, for the computer.
Sorry if I didn't explain myself very well its just been a bit overwhelming
I've tried to follow the user guide but just haven't been able to
When DHCP is enabled in the modem and the switch is plugged into that and my laptop the switch IP will not appear in the modems dashboard but the laptops does.
When I ran the utility was the same setup with laptop to switch to modem
I tired setting the laptops IP to an unused IP in that range, think I did 192.168.0.40/24
I haven't tried Changing the mask though
Should have been /16
Ah, sorry, no, I fucked up
That /24 is same as setting mask to 255.255.255.0.
Is that new switch? Or used?
Have you tried resetting its settings?
Page 70 of the manual.
Its new yeah and I tried the factory reset button on it before this troubleshooting
I tried yesterday and a couple days ago with issued so reset just i n case
Yeah ok double checked page 70 and I did reset it correctly
That's amazing, I'm in egypt rn and researching different esims was hard. The local physical sims have some locking law or some shit and dunno how much I can trust the capacity they offer cuz 60GB for $10 is 100% scam.
I bought some 12GB esim for €9
Logitech fucked up.
Certificate. Impacting hardware. Only for macOS.
It is striking that some peripherals do not work properly. Users must have Logi Options+ to reprogram mice such as the Master series, for example. These mice have a button that can be personalized by linking actions to it. The same goes for keyboards and webcams. According to some users, it is now not only impossible to reprogram those buttons, but the buttons do not work at all.
I dont know how Logitech has a good rep
@twin dew I got it working!!!
I connected my PC to the switch without the router
Set the IP
Didnt work at first but found out it was because when I was refreshing the page Firefox decided hmmm actually this should be a https address and not http
Removing the S let me in lol
I think its possible that I didnt power off the switch before trying this method last time which may have caused issues
Afaik, Logitech MX Master series is well received.
It's 4th iteration now.
Altough mine broke ... so maby you right. 😄
My G29 wheel just had its 9th anniversary
Also M705 mouse with laptop has lived from 2018, taking steel and rock debris from hars enviroments and still the battery life is amazing on it.
they don't, they have worst support in the industry and fairly shoddy reliability
they ship only through digital river, one of the most infamously bad distributors in the world
Their "good reputation" is largely from consumers who can't tell good from bad for lack of experience and in small part from enterprise customers who just buy their stuff in bulk through third parties
Two major contributors to the first part: a longstanding history in the tech scene with good products many years ago as well as a lot of advertising in esport
I am saying that as someone who has owned about 10 logi mice over many years and a few webcams 😄
Half of them (including a second gen g pro wireless) broke the left clicker before their time.
And tbf, most of the "Logitech used to be good" would be more accurately described as "tech used to be shit, Logitech just less so"
Went back and forth with their outsourced tech support who couldn't understand english for weeks when one of the webcams didn't work at the advertised resolution/fps on any PC in my house for no apparent reason. They were trying to blame my specs the whole time, when we have a handful of PC's from shiny new to old stuff.
Same. My dad has some office stuff from double-0 times which still work well whereas my 2015 stuff broke a week after warranty expired
Tho tbf, "works well" is quite a low bar to clear here, it's office hardware, as long as there are no inaccurate inputs, it's more than good enough
I'm pretty shocked at how bad stuff generally is in offices
like, mouse, mousepad, keyboard, sometimes even monitor
Why spend 50€ on a good keyboard when you can get a decent one for half that much?
With mice however, 100% agree. The office crap is just mind boggling
i've seen offices that are super fancy and then they have a $4 rubber dome keyboard for somebody who types all day
Plus the mousepads they provide are rarely good enough for proper mice usage (move with your arm, not your wrist)
We got Logitech stream keyboards. They're quite good for rubberdomes but definitely not without issue.
Couldn't convince anyone to spend hundreds on mechas tho - I'm still fighting to make 27" qhd the standard instead of 24" 1080p
Typing this with Logitech K120, 12€ keyboard
If it breaks, pull another from the shelf 😄
full mech boards start around 50 eur now, came down a lot last 15yrs. Used to be all Cherry but now Cherry is failing because offbrand switches got better than them at far cheaper prices
but if you are using a board for 8 hrs a day for 10 years then 150 eur is nothing for a completely different tier of tool which has some impact on both comfort and productivity. Less than 1c an hour. It's in pays-for-itself territory for anything that you are actually typing on regularly
I've tried to get used using 3D mouse for CAD work, which mainly replaces keyboard if it has enough buttons for shortcuts
but still need atleast keypad to input dimensions
3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Pro. They have included virtual numpad to use with that but somehow I never really felt good using it. Maybe need to train more
Don't shit on the brand. Shit on the models? Mhm... who did say that in here and is now shitting full on logitech 🤣
The master is pretty solid imo. But that's the only thing I would recommend from Logitech.
Especially S2, for it's price it was very good value.
Also my logitech G502 is 10 years old and going! And my mice before that was the same. I think I never had any other gameing mouse besides logitech.
Started as a kid with the old version of the gaming variant.
Never want anything else.
Unless they really fuck it up. But 502 is golden to me.
Fucked up the servers boot while upgrading OS, GRUB2 not loading....
Now trying to switch it over to SystemD-Boot at the same time with chroot.
😕
Didn't probably like that I have two separate EFI partitions, one on each disk, neither mounted on the default location, or something.
Or possibly that I put in too new amd64-firmware set.
best addition for my space sim setup! that 3d mouse + a stick.
Fullsize ISO-DE, black on white caps?
Highly doubtful.
Also: it's 150€ to buy smth yourself or use the 20€ stuff your employer gets you
And if we were to switch all our employees from 20€ boards to 80€ boards, that's be tens of thousands in taxpayer Euros
Some things are brand consistent, like customer service.
The few good products Logitech has are either too expensive in comparison, too hard to obtain or have other flaws that just aren't as meaningful
Like mx master being heavy as a brick
i switched to the G403 from a master a few years ago
now on my 2nd G403
The G213 (keyboard) is sooo loud but it feels great typing on it.
i would love using the g213 in a large office setting 😄
Had Proteus spectrum, failed mere weeks after warranty ran out.
Recommended it to a couple friends, similar experience, none made it a year longer than the warranty.
Hero had a fucked sensor and iirc even the G502 X buttons still have a higher failure rate than the rest of the industry.
Plus, heavy as shit and expensive as hell
Could you stop working so we can think?
~coworkers, probably
I had two G502 mice.
First one I raged on and killed myself after 10 years.
Second one is also G502, now also 10 years + old.
nice
So I had two models, lasting more than 10 years, without button issues. So not sure what you on about Fireworker.
I've never tried if works as joystick in games, or do you need custom drivers?
And for what ... 50-60 euros back then?
I had one g402 and a g502. G402 had a minor break at the USB plug rendering it useless for gaming, but got salvaged and is lying around somewhere on a shelf in case it's ever needed as backup.
G502 started double clicking and got binned
for me, with mice it is usually the wheel giving up or double click symptom.
i ususally see about opening them and fixing it but sometimes it is just a hair in the wrong spot or dirt or it is faulty
Maybe Logitech puts some extra effort into their hardware for my country, but they are good here.
Anecdotal evidence.
Both from you and from me.
My point is: there are too many anecdotes about QC/longevity issues with Logitech mice to justify their price
No, tested evidence. I use it daily. 3 models over 30 years.
We literally share a border, I doubt they run separate production lines
But we can start looking up reviews, see what the "hardware gatekeepers" think of it.
Then you also have tests showing sensors like PAW3395 outperforming the inhouse Hero stuff.
And yeah, I'm glad your mice worked. I personally haven't seen a single Logitech gaming mouse that lived beyond 3 years
My opinion, logitech has a few gems, not many, but not all their hardware is shit.
Agree. They have some good products, but they're rarely a good pick due to pricing and competition
And for the overwhelming majority of mainstream Logi stuff: it sucks
i used Sx2vJoy + vjoy (2 mapping tools)
had my instructions from forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/sx2vjoy-get-your-3dconnexion-device-working-like-a-3d-joystick-formerly-sn2vjoy.35024/
Obviously this is comparatively speaking. Even the shittiest headset sounds good if you don't have a reference to smth better
I see. Been a while when last time used virtual joysticks, maybe try if I see it could be usefull.
These would be nice universal joystics, too bad pair of them cost more than 5090. I have a plan to use chinese universal hall-effect 5V joystics, and Teensy board to control them as USB joysticks, then just model and 3D print the frame on top them, and use cheap micro swithces. But its been a sitting project
there is no escape
they will scam you
I'm Estonian and there are multiple Estonian guides here, cost a bit more but actually trustworthy. Will go with one on a city tour, another on a sea tour and 3rd on a safari'ish tour.
And then my whole family will be able to perfectly understand them
But yeah if there could be some regulations around sims, like as soon you plug one in it tells you the real capacity cuz I'm sure the actual telecom operators don't need to rely on scamming.
and how many taxpayer euros pay their salaries for 10 years?
At 60 eur a piece you're talking about 300 plus employees, at 50k euros a year that's 15 million euros on salary.
So the 20k expense has to increase productivity by 0.13% to break even. You don't think that's realistic?
If you're not sure if you're gonna be operating next month, that's one thing - but if you're the german government, you operate as if you'll still need basic tools like keyboards for years to come. In that circumstance you can't afford not to buy decent tools. They increase productivity by 10x more than buying crap tools saves.
Cuz orange reportedly has that function but I didn't get it working.
But at least my VM server boots again.
VM startup is broken after the OS upgrade.
So just checking that microcode update works, then going to update BMC/IPMI firmware, then see about fixing that.
By making above average cheap e-waste
There not good they just sell to lower standards
yea thats the thing like i got a M550 as a throwaway mouse for my laptop and iv nerver had to change the battery once in the last 2 years and the mouse buttons are way above average quality so they do have some good stuff but there mostly just getting caried by G502 fans
And the VM thing was just that libvirt lock manager had been split into new package.
And as I have configured the system to not install recommended packages automatically, shit can break.
But I will never again buy an AsRock Rack product,,,
Their firmware support, at least for the cheaper products, is abysmal.
Compared to Supermicro
Thing is: government doesn't calculate productivity.
If better keebs helped reduce sick days, I'd say that's a valid argument to make - but even if you could back that theory with irrefutable evidence, it's still nigh impossible to find keyboards that meet the criteria (100% ISO-DE, black on white)
It's not impossible to change the status quo and I'm willing to be the one to push for change, but I doubt that there's enough research out there for me to make a compelling argument
Especially since our health and safety advisors said we should use low profile keebs to reduce wrist strain
And cherry streams are by no means bad Rubberdome keebs. I've had days when I preferred my work keeb over my home one (customized Keychron V6 with durock T1 and pudding caps)
flat keys are great but they wear out and destableise so unbearably fast
My experience with QHD doesn't look promising
Kinda? I've had several keebs fail with broken/disconnected stabs, but ultimately nobody cares enough to track that cost.
Keyboard breaks, user brings it in, IT hands out replacement, IT discards old keyboard. Repeat until stock runs low, then order like 10 or 20 new ones
To update NUT to be from Debian Testing or not... To get newer mainline version and Debian enabled SystemD Notify integration...
Is there some easy way to have a client on a phone to receive notifications in local network?
I would imagine it won't be nice for battery life without your way-to-go notification services (that don't actually even need an app of a phone really...), but I want to make a local temperature monitoring with notifications
The physical sim we tried was 2GB instead of 34GB 😆
But my 12GB esim is 5/12 and working
Android/iOS don't support notifications from anywhere except APN and FCM
(At least OS-level notifications)
(Coming from an external service)
It's possible to have an app poll an endpoint and trigger notifications locally when desired but this only works if the app is in the foreground.
Apple and google provide the services for free still
But delivering notifications does require you to host your own backend with certs for APN/FCM
exactly. that's why I said about battery time. but I want purely local solution, wihtout any external services
not really as service, but certificate is what will allow you to tell apn/fcm to send push
It's a service 🤷♂️ You have to be on their platform, you have to apply to get the certs, and apple only provides it if you pay the developer fee.
I mean, you can get a certificate and send notification only when you need to, without having 24/7 server(service) running in 'cloud' or anywhere
you send request to them - not the other way around. that's what I am clarifying
But now I'm sad... I lost my128MB (not typo) USB-stick today... And might have either dropped it into waste, or vacuumed it up...
Oh, gotcha
By "service" I just meant that they host a backend that you can send requests to
Put the new BIOS on it, went to the server cabinet, noticed I hadn't remembered to vacuum the filters in ages, did that, didn't find the key anymore.
Basically dropped it from my hand to where-ever when switched to vacuuming preparations.
And I had 150l trashbag half full of plastic waste right next to that...
Might go through that tomorrow and move everything one by one into another bag.
Which is why the vacuum itself isn't likely destination, but I could just have completely missed that for some reason.
Been using it mainly for BIOS updates etc.
So not lot of writes overall.
Counterintuitively a lot of older silicon(because of larger node and not age) is inherently more durable than what we can make today
That too, as why I was using it for firmware updates.
If we suddenly stopped producing any and all ICs, stuff made pre-2000 would likely be the last to die from a pure silicon standpoint
Capacitors and other components are the limiting factor in practice
Nuclear dearmament has been a good thing but the loss of highly enriched fuels really limits tech in so many ways
US has restarted production of RTG-grade plutonium.
I'm aware, but it's in very small quantities(potentially doesn't even meet demand from space industry) at very high cost
With target of 1.5kg per year.
And highly enriched fuel has a lot of potential for terrestrial uranium power systems as well
PU-238 isn't that suitable for other uses, just good for RTGs.
And for terrestrial RTGs, you can use shorter half-life stuff that just gets switched at intervals.
I'm not talking about RTGs
I'm talking about using highly enriched uranium or re-enriched fuel in traditional presurrized or boiling water reactors to extract far more energy from the fuel and potentially lower costs
Sorry for the lack of clarity
Yeah, the production is so low that we essentially have to reserve it for missions to outer solar system
Even europa clipper didn't get a cut, had to make do with a smaller power budget and a ton of mass going to PV
No, James Webb is glued and completely unmaintainable, as the weight budget was completely used up from the start, and all weight overruns caused major issues.
"We have launch rocket that can lift X kg, we shall design the satellite to use it all". With that budget split from the start to various things, with no overrun allowance.
And that original weight budget split way underestimated some subsystems weights, like the solar shield.
Lot of wishes, but the final design has everything "extra" removed, including using glue instead of bolts etc. where-ever possible.
To level of:
The review identified that Webb launch and deployment had 344 potential single-point failures – tasks that had no alternative or means of recovery if unsuccessful, and therefore had to succeed for the telescope to work.
That launch was ESAs contribution, in return for observation time.
So split locked in before even the real design was started.
Bruhhhh @twin dew hope you dont mind pings, you remember my gpu heat problems, now i feel stupid bc i forgot about fan tuning

im surprised its not more of a concern that most of the population in the world cant sleep at night anymore
dunno just do
i definitely prefere a 40C summer day over a -20C winter day il tell you that much
No we still live in a captialistic dystopia and pretend its all normal
No wonder people cant sleep anymore, cost of living increase, stagnate washes, decreased qol, also if you live in the us, our healthcare system is equally ass to

now its the ai takeover 💀
Which well accelerate oil depletion
Ai well became like ai from matrix, harvesting humans for energy
Ok probably not because that sounds dumb, but still i just cant see this ending well for humanity in the end
Fun fact, the original matrix script called for the AI to be using the humans for compute, not power
unrelated but iv now hit 8000 hours on this PC so this computer has lived in a functional condition longer than my old pc lived functional and broken combined
We will sacrifice all of our oil for the ai

We just dont tell baine about our secret discussions👀
But baine finds us and bans us in the end anyways, its over

it's a zombie video game, where people are zombies because fungus cordiceps evolved to take control of human hosts
the show is really well done. i've never played the game but the show is 100x better than walking dead imo.
Its a common practice in rural/bush areas to check the pouch of roos that have been hit by a car and they mark them with spray paint so people know there's no babies at risk
cyberpunk 2077 is a recreation of cyberpunk's tabletop descriptions and lore, which is far older than even the og deus ex
deus ex was pulp cyberpunk by the time it landed, copying eveyrthing around it
cyberpunk tabletop game was 1988 at first. night city all happened then. 2077 builds on top of all that lore
it was nice. i never finished the game. it was a slog. and i was bummed out because i had to restart. non lethal builds were allowed, so i tried one for my first go. except then you can't beat bosses because even teh very first boss fight wasn't designed for non lethal characters. locking them out of the rest of the game
so i wrote off stealth and non lethal gameplay and played that way, but never finished
human revolution had great visual design an story, but man the game mechanics were such a slog and poorly designed
i heard they remastered and released it again, fixed this time, but charged again for it so i never bought it
should've just fixed the og version
original is better on account of the game mechanics working. it was an actual immersive sim game. not a broken rpg
i love watch dogs 2. legion is where the series fell off
i enjoyed cyberpunk but them getting screwed by there testers sucked
naw. tomb raider is a franchise that will sell if they make something for it. there was always going to be a new tomb raider
i'm not going to buy a dlc for a game that i didn't enjoy in the first place
so is satisfactory

I wonder if atlantis is coming back to or just sg1
Wait i dont know if they confirmed its going to be a sg1 based tv show or just set in the same universe
I know they did confirm they arent going to break any canon but rather continue the canon, which is very nice
so they're bringing back one shot to stun, two shots to kill?
sadly no. had one a few years ago
had to catch me mid-keyboard teardown 🤣
the on/off switch for it is losing its mind, so i'm opening it up to see if it's fixable
he was a great pick for Ultron
avengers
i think spader's one of those "artists"
where he needs roles that fit his ego
he was the main character for The Blacklist tv series
speaking of egos.......
yes
i watched all of SG1 in its original run
corin was a good addition
i think he considered himself more important than that role & the time on screen
meh
ngl i kinda miss when tv shows had people die & they stayed dead
first season of TNG sucked for a bunch of other reasons, casting wasn't one of those 🤣
sure os fun trying to dismantle a keyboard with no instructions
lol
i wonder if they even kept one for their archives
well figured out why my keyboard is having issues
poofy battery
straight replacement is half off rn so i just grabbed it
it'd basically cost as much to repair it
and now i'm on a dogshit $2 Dell keyboard for the next week
i might still try to have it fixed and just give it an easily replaceable battery
k, battery superglued to the case is sitting outside again, grabbed the board & switches 🤣
this particular dust storm is the famous one from a few years ago
i remember it rolling in

you're at 50N in Prague, and that's above all the US except for Alaska

sadly we'll never have TGV here
eh
used to have a truck, got rid of it
Ordered the new Beyerdynamic wireless MMX 230 headset. My 7 year old MMX300 headband wont hold together anymore 😄
https://www.reddit.com/r/BEYERDYNAMIC/comments/1fy6eez/plastic_piece_connecting_headband_to_the_left_cup/ same weak spot both sides. Have fixed them three times now
-26°C CAT been purring 8 hours soon. Waiting for trucks to arrived for unload
Can happen, we have 4 different sizes to suit your car
rattly boi
So somehow yt is now not just requiring me to reload a tab to be even able to set 1.5 speed (instead of that crapy not working speed menu),
But also can somehow downgrade speed back to x1 and revert to that crappy menu on it's own
Plastic wears down after a while so explainable. GG on 7 years though 😁
It will still work when fixed with duct tape, fits just one size head then
During 7 years I've replaced 2 cables and 1 pair of the ear cushions
Also there are these
But want to try if I can live with wireless headset, its been problematic before
You would be jealous of my ram protector
Finally managed to get rid of stupid all-in-one modem and got ONT + modem combo which allows me to replace modem with my own router which needs to be plugged directly into ONT (need to buy Unifi Dream Router 7 + sfp module first)
@twin dew My ISP only specifies using 100 vlan id for pppoe. First time I saw vlan id priority and wonder if it makes any difference
Read online it has something to do with QoS
I managed to remove the white modem and connect my asus router directly to ont and pppoe connection works fine
IEEE P802.1p was a task group active from 1995 to 1998, responsible for adding traffic class expediting and dynamic multicast filtering to the IEEE 802.1D standard. The task group developed a mechanism for implementing quality of service (QoS) at the media access control (MAC) level. Although this technique is commonly referred to as IEEE 802.1p...
But I will replace my asus router with Unifi Dream Router 7 soon and buy an sfp module for it
But very unlikely that the ISP will honor that setting, but just strips it away.
Oh, so it it related to QoS
Btw, I am glad people have managed to eliminate even ONT completely
Yes, that extra header to Etherrnet frames contains both VLAN ID and that specific QoS ID.
You basically have to change sfp module serial number to the serial number of ISP-provided ONT
And then it will work without any problems
I might buy 9070 XT next when GPU and RAM crisis is gone
*if it's gone
🤣
Interesting. I barely get more than 120 Mbit/s on 2,4 GHz while on 5 GHz I get up to 800 Mbit/s even though access point is in the same room
I bet it's 2,4 GHz SSID congestion
I need to setup channels again then....
Omg, why....... 😭
3 out of 5 SSID's use 40 MHz channel width....
No wonder I get low speed on 2,4 GHz
That's very very good performance for 2.4
I think it can go above 200 Mbit's but not sure tbh
Theoretically, yes
That's very good real world though
And it's always funny to me because I work with IoT radios that only get a few kb/s
But can do it over km with significantly less power than wifi uses
I am really pissed a lot of SSID's use 40 MHz width and all of them use the same channel
I moved to channel 11 now
40MHz width was needed for a long time when that was most peoples primary connection
Now that it's mostly just used for longer-range or smart devices it makes more sense to have a narrower bandwidth
Oh wait, if I put channel 11, it will overlap with channel 6 SSID's which use 40 MHz
When you let an electrician fix a fiber optic cable (not my picture) 🤣
Another one of those "Never let an electrician touch your network"
I had to fix my sister's ethernet jacks on the wall because an electrician messed up everything
If he actually used a lan tester, he would knew he didn't connect wires properly
i found it at a lego store and couldn't resist 😂
i love how there esentially just land seals
Yes, if you've got people around with 40mhz.. your boned.
2.4 has 3 nonoverlapping 20mjz channels. But a lot of devices in the US at least do not like channel 11.. so it's really only 2.
5ghz has... 2 non dfs non overlapping 80mhz channels... 4 40mhz channels..
I can only speak to the us rules though.. I think Europe has an extra channel on 2.4 and 5ghz.
Zigbee or zwave is about the best you can do for iot shit.. and if your device supports it.. 6ghz wifi
6ghz has the advantage... dis advantage of shorter range so youre less likely to get interference from your neighbors... but you need more AP's
20MHz is the normal channel width on 2.4GHz.
By the spec, 40MHz "double-wide" is supposed to be only used when there are NO other visible 2.4GHz APs.
But lot of APs use it anyways all the time.
And all those APs are so faint that they don't matter.
And with N or AC, with 2x2 transmission, 20MHz 2.4GHz is 150Mbit/s max in theoretical, 40MHz is 300Mbit/s max theoretical.
And in actual use you usually halve those for "best case" actual throughput.
AX upped those to 287/574.
But if the device is only 1x1 capable, then the speeds get halved.
I will use 5 GHz then since my important devices are near it. I get up to 800 Mbit/s
And mostly the issue with "use always" have been the ISP provided router/APs.
Retail stuff got fixed fast and only very early devices with very early firmwares use 40MHz channels when on Auto.
Of course user CAN always manually force it, but mostly the issue is those crap ISP devices with spec breaking firmwares.
They probably don't even know about channels
I live in a house surrounded by residential buildings. Situation would probably be much worse if I actually lived inside a residential building
Didn't know our capital city was the coldest in Europe yesterday although it shares the place with Helsinki which had same temperature
Really hope it's not going to be -17 degrees on monday as the forecast says
Is it alright to laugh when someone hopes it won't be cold?
As long that person isn't freezing to death in the end
Hmmm, so technically alright to laugh until you freeze first, before someone you laugh at?
If you mean on homeless people or people without heating, it is never ok to laugh at them no matter what
Thought you were asking about us "spoiled" people who have a home or heating but still complain
-30,5°C at 8:00 clock. Had a problem with my car, ignition lock either broke or low temps contributed that the key wont turn past ACC position. Tried to warm it up carefully with hair dryer and lock oil but no luck for an hour so working from home today
First time in my life could not get car my running when its cold. But I think the ignition lock is broken in a way not related to cold as its warm now and still wont go past ACC position
They had to heat up tram tracks here because everything is frozen
Several trams also derailed because of ice
checks the local news again
Yes I was
Although more like 'temporary kore fortunate'
Yesterday contcat power lines got ice layer so extensive network of electricity driven public transport was nonfunctional
But this night brought more 'presents'
Some homes are emptying pipes to prevent damage since water is now not supplied
And we expect coldee weather soon
Our water pipes are burried deep and insulated so we are lucky we never had issues with frozen pipes
Which means... That more appartment building will have no utility other then occasional power and maybe gas
Big maybe on gas though, since half of our gas storage was hit this night
Water runs underground, couple meters,
though idk about amount of insulation.
I bet they are more worried that pipes inside appartments might freeze solid
It's quite a big technical chalange to make utility production and destribution resilient
Cough
Esepcially when budget disappears
I can heat my house on natural gas and AC. Also have a chimney flue I don't use but I can install wood stove because of that if things go really bad
Oh so you are now rubbing that in? 🙂
Despite having warmer regions to the south it's kind of hard to get there cause mountains so more likely to run west, even if it's a bit colder sometimes
My deceased grandfather turned us into preppers lol. He told us every home should have at least 2 sources of heat if possible: natural gas, electricity and wood stove if possible
Any combination of those
Well you can't do anything really in appartments
And I am talking not about myself, but about millions of people without utilities in a winter
My parents bought a house before the war started and they always made sure to have an alternative source of heat
Oh yeah, apartments are in a tricky situation
Btw many new buildings have just water and power connected, but no gas.
If you live in a residential building, you need an approval of at least 51% of landlords in order to do some major construction
But regardless, once gas storage is bombed - it's of little use
Hence why some buy small portable gas stoves and gas tanks
And make the news with accidents...
My parents were always worried about gas tanks. We don't have it and run a gas pipe directly to boiler and kitchen
Central heating on this house can use diesel or wood. Diesel can work with help of generator if grid is down, generator also helps if wood is used by running the water pump on the central heating. Solar panels are kinda meh as currently no battery for them and they are configured so that they are offline if grid is down
Also on addition to fireplace at central heating theres 3 other fireplaces, big brick oven used for bread which stores lot of heat on it even after the fire is out. Then Sauna and a just a normal small fireplace
Meanwhile somebody has to watch the kids in apartments with no water, no heating, no power...
Which is more likely to 'survive': gas, liquid or solid?
In gas every molecule is in it for itself, randomly bumping into each other, having momentary exchange, probably never to meet again. Not caring much about gravity or electric charges of each other. Always trying to take all available space.
In fluid they are more closely interacting neighbours, but still allowing for many changes, following shape of the container, sometimes forming more rigid surface bonds.
And in a solid body, resisting external change, in a rigid structure... Kinda boring.
But what is survival? If stone is grinded into sand - did it die? Did it evolve? If a water droplet went full circle of vapor, snowflake, compressed ice sheet, back to water, does that count as survival?
What did he do?
Not my picture but the electrician obviously has zero clue how fiber optic cable works
Or someone did this as a joke and lied the electrician did it
But they always told me not to underestimate human stupidity so maybe the electrician actually did this lol
Not to mention an electrician installed some cheap ethernet cable in my sister's apartment and didn't properly wire ethernet jacks. Had to fix his poor job
did what
I just don't understand what i'm looking at 😄
The electrician basically connected damaged fiber optic cables together like they conduct electricity
Guess he doesn't know how fiber works
Fiber spliced like power wires.
Even for copper based signal wires that would be just stupid.
But as the maker didn't even try to strip the fiber, more likely a joke.
Perhaps. I noticed people keep posting fake stories on reddit because of karma farming
or rage-bait
The stupid stuff I do with local nftables to prevent outgoing connections except to very specific servers...
List of allowed NTP and HTTP(S) server IPs gets updated hourly from DNS records, or right before update checking happens for the HTTP(S).
And right after nftables service gets (re)started.
Inside VMs.
Ah, sorry, also needs networking to be up and DNS resolution to be up for that service that is tied to nftables state.
After=systemd-resolved.service
After=nss-lookup.target
After=network-online.target
After=nftables.service
Requisite=nftables.service
PartOf=nftables.service
BindsTo=nftables.service
ReloadPropagatedFrom=nftables.service```
And just noticed I need to add another reloadpropagatedfrom for that timesyncd to the NTP server version...
And removed the after for same from the non-NTP one.
I'm switching away from gmail, do any of you have experience with other providers?
I'm strongly considering protonmail at the moment
I used Proton Mail to spam members of the European Parliament in order to prevent them from adopting Chat Control
💀
I did something dumb too.. when I had a bind mount for /usr the system didn't boot lol
I still have /usr bind mounted, but I'm using a systemd service to do it
Why are you doing it that way, that the primary mount is under /mnt/ and secondary is bind-mounted in the right place, and not the other way around?
As is expected.
And why the ton of different binds?
it's on a pi with a 16GB emmc, and it has a 256GB nvme.
instead of booting off the nvme, I just set up a bunch of binds so it uses the nvme for logs, apps, user data etc.
And you could still mount the NVMe partitions directly into the right places, not first into /mnt/nvme/ and then bind-mount to right place.
the nvme has a single partition.
if I had formatted it with separate partitions, then it would've been easier.
Yeah, that's the right way to do it, but what's the fun in that lol
Using single (mirrored) BTRFS partition for everything except EFI and swap.
With subvolumes for the various partition replacements.
That "raw" root subvol is only mounted at /var/btrbk/System/
I would like to setup my proxmox server with that, eventually.
have a btrfs mirrored boot drive, even if the VM's arn't stored there just to have that extra reliability.
Firewall computer has just single small Optane, with similar setup, just using BTRFS in mode that puts all the data doubled on same drive.
Doesn't protect against full drive failure, but allows for bit-rot prevention etc.
Doing same on both Pi 1 and Pi 4 for the SDCards.
Theoretically, is there a way to gamify creation of abstractions and interfaces between systems?
Yeah 🤷
But Debian team is annoying and doesn't include XXHash64 kernel module in the installer...
I need to do partial install, load the xxhash_generic module from that partial install, then create the actual file system, move the already installed files over, and continue...
As CRC32C is just bad, and SHA256 and BLAKE2b are just so much slower, even with AVX2 acceleration, as they are cryptographic hashes.
Or CPU SHA256 instructions too.
(Just btrfs things)
xxhash64 "only" takes double the time of crc32.
Where as in the test CPU, Intels inbuild SHA256 instruction took 68 times longer per 4k block.
Next thing is to switch router/firewall away from using FirewallD as extra layer, and using NFTables directly instead...

I think I was writing before bout how it did a few times seemingly discharge only to display 100% when plugged in
Today it was under standard load of network stuff and then an hour later after checking 60% charge it turned off and was not responding. Having no other ac power source (soon it will be full 24h without power) other then identical unit, it did turn on and display 100% again, reporting 0W charge but drawing 36W from the other unit (which is fairly unusual powe= draw, since it usually is 150-250W when actively charging).
Not sure what that is, since after last time it did power off and display 100% immediately it did work successful y providing power from it's battery for at least couple weeks now.
Some error in battery readings? Or could this be deeper?
Broke personal record in december and made a monthly bandwidth of almost 1 TB
It's probably going to be bigger this month since I already made 500 GB until 9th of January
Something like that
Not just steam, I am also reinstalling games on other platforms so I can play them again
fair
i think i could drop like 2TB atleast on a full install of my library now
if i dident think they woudl throttle my internet id probably try to hit as high of a usage as possible
My sister also has access to my NAS from a remote location and she backups files from there
you know you can transfer steam games accross local network right?
i hope your storage doesnt wear out
yea but for some games its abysmally slow
like i tried to tranfer one time across gigabit and it was going at like 6mbit
at that point may aswell download new
I don't want to waste space on my NAS for game backups so I just download them when I want to play them
Man, why is it so hard to get a good username
if only M.2's werent so darn expensive
time to hit up the used market
when power is so shit that it doesn't even charge...
for me it gets even better, one of my laptops recently died and it doesnt even detect the ac adaptor being plugged into it either, let alone boot up
That's something you can pay to get repaired
who knows, that laptop is as dead as a door nail
I mean, it didn't explode
So there's still hope
And you can get the drives to make backup
Would be funny if it's just one of the contacts being loose on power input and dead battery
there is, thankfully its under warranty and im sending it in soon under rma, so its going to depend on my seller to somehow fix it
hmm well idk, it doesnt detect ac power being plugged in it at all and one time i was able to get it to boot it did say it was 0% charge on the battery and it didnt stay on and shut down some time after that, that was the one and only time i was able to get the laptop to even boot on and gave up after that, as nothing i did seemed to work
so it could be a dead battery or that 0% battery charge windows told me was a sign of maybe something else, idk
Buying used drives is like the #1 thing you shouldn’t do
No mounts and not really worth the cost proportionately to the speed gains last i checked
With those power station things, is it better to have them stay connected and charge on their own, or regularly turn on and off the grid ? In terms of longevity
Nah it's easier to test their helth than psus
Just ask the seller to run cdi
🙏
The magic black smoke that makes computers work is still inside
maybe🤣
i've only had 1 device do that, and i was home when it happened, but i missed it
was in a different room when i heard the tv make one hell of a pop
definitely smelled it tho
finally got around to hooking up my tv as another monitor, and it reminded me of how old it is 🤣

i was watching a show talking about the modern english accent, and how kevin costner's american accent is actually probably closer to the english accents of the time
These days, you cannot ask anyone to put on any accents if you don't own it 🤣
And isn't old english totally different?

clean or no
not with apps vissible on the desktop
That's the Lord's Prayer (our father)
Old English died out around the 12th century.
The first stories of Robin Hood were recorded in the 15th century.
I'd go as far as speculate that robin hood spoke a form of English closer to modern English
yea this is my desktop 🤣
Clean in my opinion. Also that wallpaper is great
here be mine :p

Too much stuff pinned IMO
Is that a wallpaper engine wallpaper? Can you send a link/workshop ID?

good, its been a shell company for some time anyways
it used to make good games like black flag, but those days are gone
can i have it too?
Haven't seen this one before:
Isn't this illegal? There is no "don't ask me again" and I already manually disabled personalized ads which are on by default
This is the third time I've been prompted
sadly no, just be glad it isnt worse, because youtube can easily do it and no laws exist to really stop it
The Microsoft way of asking consent
Yeah, I don't see anything illegal either.
That's funny, I thought this was covered under the DSA
Democratic Socialism of America?
DuckDuckGo moments
@jagged snow One could argue this might be a dark pattern.
Ban on dark patterns - Deceptive design tactics, such as aggressive pop-ups or confusing and misleading consent buttons, are now prohibited.
source: digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/digital-services-act
And also:
Feed options - On large platforms with over 45 million monthly users in the EU, you can now opt for non-personalised feeds. This way, you decide whether to see content based on the algorithm’s suggestions, sometimes pushing specific content which may be more appealing or even addictive, or other criteria, such as the chronological order.
So you might have a good case, if nobody is already on it (which is likely, not every investigation is public, might lead to fines in the future).
Btw; this is why I still use google. Because it actually gives me what I want. Referring the DuckDuckGo fucking it up in previous screenshot.
Huh
???
Oh, just interesting
Ah, yeah. My two cents are, dark patterns. What are those. What falls under it. 🤷♂️
The opt for non personalised feeds is pretty clear. Just sad it doesn't included personalised ads.
dark patterns are like, articles that bury the lead deep under a lot of rambling paragraphs created for SEO purposes, with targeted ads between each of them.
things that product designers do that benefit the bottom line, but does not benefit the end user at all.
I meant literal.
The legal definition of dark patterns.
I have my ideas what dark patterns could be, but that doesn't mean the EU see it as a dark pattern 😉
Deceptive patterns (also known as “dark patterns”) are tricks used in websites and apps that make you do things that you didn't mean to, like buying or signing up for something. For example:
www.deceptive.design source
yeah it's kind of a loose definition. there isn't a strict one. that's why examples are often best practice there. "burying the lead" is one that's not as obvious as the others, since it's only tricking the user into scrolling down further which isn't really that big of an action
Dark pattern or not?
You have two choices it seems. Continue with personalised ads. Or ask again in a week.
It's possible that if Fight or Flight clicks continue, they get option to opt out of personalised ads and it will never be asked again.
But if the app keeps asking it every week ... then I would say it's scummy design.
Dark patterns on online interfaces of online platforms are practices that materially distort or impair, either on purpose or in effect, the ability of recipients of the service to make autonomous and informed choices or decisions. Those practices can be used to persuade the recipients of the service to engage in unwanted behaviours or into undesired decisions which have negative consequences for them. Providers of online platforms should therefore be prohibited from deceiving or nudging recipients of the service and from distorting or impairing the autonomy, decision-making, or choice of the recipients of the service via the structure, design or functionalities of an online interface or a part thereof. This should include, but not be limited to, exploitative design choices to direct the recipient to actions that benefit the provider of online platforms, but which may not be in the recipients’ interests, presenting choices in a non-neutral manner, such as giving more prominence to certain choices through visual, auditory, or other components, when asking the recipient of the service for a decision.
It should also include repeatedly requesting a recipient of the service to make a choice where such a choice has already been made, making the procedure of cancelling a service significantly more cumbersome than signing up to it, or making certain choices more difficult or time-consuming than others, making it unreasonably difficult to discontinue purchases or to sign out from a given online platform allowing consumers to conclude distance contracts with traders, and deceiving the recipients of the service by nudging them into decisions on transactions, or by default settings that are very difficult to change, and so unreasonably bias the decision making of the recipient of the service, in a way that distorts and impairs their autonomy, decision-making and choice. However, rules preventing dark patterns should not be understood as preventing providers to interact directly with recipients of the service and to offer new or additional services to them. Legitimate practices, for example in advertising, that are in compliance with Union law should not in themselves be regarded as constituting dark patterns. Those rules on dark patterns should be interpreted as covering prohibited practices falling within the scope of this Regulation to the extent that those practices are not already covered under Directive 2005/29/EC or Regulation (EU) 2016/679.
source: §67 Regulation (EU) 2022/2065
eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2022/2065/oj/eng
Yes, this is a dark pattern. The following sections of the EU definition undoubtedly apply here:
Providers of online platforms should therefore be prohibited from deceiving or nudging recipients of the service and from distorting or impairing the autonomy, decision-making, or choice of the recipients of the service via the structure, design or functionalities of an online interface or a part thereof.
It should also include repeatedly requesting a recipient of the service to make a choice where such a choice has already been made [...] or making certain choices more difficult or time-consuming than others
@night girder see my answer to your question above
Noted, thanks for digging that up
I'll be curious to see if this behavior rolls out globally
the issue here isn't about personalized ads or not.
It's that you don't have a choice to permanently opt out of tracking data collection and that some features (blocking specific ads) are locked behind data collection even when there's no legitimate reason to do so
Wait wait we don't know that right?
yw
What happens if you click "continue"?
If you go to a screen that lets the user select what ads they want (personlised or not), it seems legal?
read the popup, it says it right there
enabling ads allows you to control which data they collect and to block ads
well, if we don't know, it's a dark pattern
but I guess, yeah
it's possible that the "disable all" option is hidden behind the "continue" button.
but it's also possible that the "continue" button is considered consent to data collection
If you click continue, and the next screen is "enable/disable personalised ads".
Then the user consents to using personalised ads.
If then the pop-up never appears, there is no dark pattern afaik.
If the pop-up keeps popping up untill you enabled personalised ads ...
except it's not. it's advertising features to you so that you agree to them collection your data
And if the user ignores the pop up, personalised ads aren't turned on. YT should be fine, probably.
It's not like if YT (google, Alphabet) doesn't have a legal team figuring this all out beforehand 😉
you say YT should be fine, but imo they make the user experience for opting out a lot more intransparent
which is a dark pattern
they nudge you towards clicking "continue"
doesn't matter what that button does, it's manipulative
Fine legally in EU when it comes to DSA and the screenshot.
I am purely speaking "is it legal in the eyes of the EU law or not ..." (DSA in this case).
And if you go to court, what will be the outcome (% wise).
that's exactly what I'm talking about.
Tell me that this section does not apply to that popup:
Providers of online platforms should therefore be prohibited from deceiving or nudging recipients of the service and from distorting or impairing the autonomy, decision-making, or choice of the recipients of the service via the structure, design or functionalities of an online interface or a part thereof.
I am mixed. On the one hand I think "YT isn't poor and dumb to not respect EU laws at this point ..." on the other hand... "Well, maybe YT knows they get away with it anyway. And the fine is just pocket money for them".
You can always report it to EU (gotta look up what instance) and let them know what's going on.
if the punishment for breaking the law is a fine, that means it's legal for a price.
and if the fine is low enough, that price for legality is merely the cost of doing business
You tell me what does apply?
enforcing the law is costly too
Because I am not sure if this is nudging, or deceiving.
Seems pretty straight forward to me. "Can we show personalized ads or not?"
nudging recipients of the service and distorting the decision-making
Altough. It is ambigious. Because I still don't know what happens if you click continue.
You know what. If I have to think this much, you are right.
if it was a simple yes or no question, that would be true
however, that is not the case. the choice is "continue" or "maybe later"
which would then fall under
repeatedly requesting a recipient of the service to make a choice where such a choice has already been made
Yes. Just had to think a bit about it.
Did you know there is a database public with DSA - Statements of reasons?
Oh nvm. Though it was something else.
The Digital Services Act (DSA), obliges providers of hosting services to inform their users of the content moderation decisions they take and explain the reasons behind those decisions in so-called statements of reasons.
Though it was EU ruling on DSA cases.
I was looking up, how we can actually report stuff like this. If even possible.
Found it!
Users of an online service who believe that the service's practices violate the European Digital Services Act (DSA) may lodge a complaint with the Competition Authority (Autorité de la concurrence).
Contact form doesn't work.
So you have to send it by post to;
2a, rue d’Anvers L-1130 Luxembourg Luxembourg
This is so dumb, that means you gotta print the screenshots 🤣
You must forward the information you have in your possession to substantiate your suspicions (e.g. screenshots, webpage URLs, images or videos, electronic correspondence, emails, terms and conditions, decisions by platforms, etc.)
I hope they are overreacting regarding RAM prices going 10x of the original price: www.techradar.com/pro/is-ram-the-new-bitcoin-ddr4-memory-prices-are-rising-so-fast-some-tracker-graphs-are-running-out-of-space-and-i-fear-2026-could-well-see-a-10x-price-rise
... =_=
Because 10X price increase would basically mean the end of PC gaming 💀
Do I got some news for you.
Please don't 😭
Seems the whole market is getting a bit ... less stable.
Looks like they want to force us to subscribe to cloud gaming....
Because gaming PC will become a luxury
Buying a PC might get more expensive than buying a car 😄
If gaming PC is going to cost more than a gas boiler which is already expensive, I am going to kill myself
Lol same
People might move to console gaming but they will become expensive too since they have cpu, gpu and ram
Well, current consoles might already get price increase soon
I feel so powerless with all these price shenanigans.
they're forcing the subscription model, just like streaming services did. almost completely killed off the home media hardware market except for enthusiasts & the wealthiest who don't care about pricing anyway
They already have no?
didn’t Xboxes double in price
Mhm, not sure if I would use the word forcing.
The stars just align for them now to pull this off.
I swear Nintendo is the only one that stood its ground so far
The demand from AI is a welcome opportunity to 🖕 gamers and go for the big tech companies.
Might work through the national ones too?
https://competition-policy.ec.europa.eu/antitrust-and-cartels/european-competition-network/national-competition-authorities_en
But I am not sure that the rise of AI and the impact on hardware market, was deliberate and calculated together with subscription models.
knowingly using the AI bubble to hamstring parts availablility for consumers so that when that bubble does pop they'll have a steady subscription service to keep them going
You can be right, it's possible subscription model is a backup plan for AI bubble popping
And if it doesn't, they have extra and steady income.
the house always wins
That's why I said I feel powerless.
the fact that geforce now is popular says it all
Citizens can literally do nothing about it.
We can't even "boycot" them by "not" buying their product.
there is no product to buy 🤣
that too
and I am 100% sure.
When they come crawling back to gamers. We will all just buy it happily again.
Even though they kinda drop us like nothing 🤣
And I say that, because I've seen the shit (price of their hardware) Nvidia got away with over the years. Baffling to me.
Cause we have no choice just like everything else
you prettymuch cant go without a computer of somekind anymore
We do have choices to opt for other brands.
But I am guilty of it too. If not for people in this chat. I would still be buying the "big" name brands*.
3? For GPU's? And way more for RAM.
Nvidia, AMD and Intel all had CES keynotes almost purely about AI hype.
Yeah, I saw articles about it. Didn't want to read them fully. Made me sad.
Same was with NFT. Companies hyping it up. Without really a demand for it.
Seems the same is going on right now. Them telling us what we really want.
Also, have you read the articles about all the old gen stuff they brining back? DDR4/5 boards for example.
Intel is just a fun side character
And then Nvidia bringing back old ass generations of GPU.
Eh, I root for them more and more. But maybe I am too optimistic on that front.
There GPU’s are good but they arent competing
Takes long time to break into market if you aren't overwhelming technically, and sometimes even then.
And when even AMD cannot get more when so many just tell to get Nvidia, no matter what.
Brand recognition is sometimes very real.
10x better than 5090 for path tracing performance.
Exactly. That's what I meant. Same goes from memory.
brand recognition, and people will buy the same brands if prices lower back down.
As someone who have never heard of... what is that?
Some startup at CES that was spotted.
Read about it in an article.
And they playing it smart. Promised a GPU on the market around 2027 and they don't seem to focus on AI like Nvidia and AMD do.
The journalist is skeptic though. Company is only 5 years old. Bold claims etc.
hopefully they add drivers into the linux kernel like intel. that is a big thing for me
Eh, let's see if they make a working GPU first and not some demo stuff.
of course
The one thing that does strike me is that, if Nvidia and AMD focus on AI, it can create a hole in the market for others to fill in.
Are there a lot of GPU's with integrated CPU's?
i think so
