And you aren't looking for "encrypted cloud storage", you are looking for just storage without encryption.

#

Basically that "Client side encryption" is something that cannot be supported for service you want.

visual tree
#

For that price I'd rather buy 2 NAS devices and keep them in different cities while doing backup lol

night girder
#

man at this rate, it's going to be aws.

twin dew
night girder
#

Ah, Hetzner. Came across them.

twin dew
#

That seems to be the cheapest you can get in EU based on various comments, for just getting bulk storage as service via standard protocols, and not via Amazon S3 or like special API or provider specific software, or rolling your own by renting a server instead.

night girder
#

honestly, amazon is so complex

twin dew
#

Point was that lot of places have S3 compatible object storage API services.

#

But probably not a protocol that NAS backup software knows.

#

What NAS maker is it?

night girder
#

Seems Hetzner is what I need.

night girder
twin dew
#

So can do rsync or Amazon S3 Storage (and clones) basically.
In addition to specific listed services.

#

For that Synology Hyper Backup in DSM 7.3

night girder
#

Yeah I know ๐Ÿ˜„

#

It can do a lot. That's why I was confused with the other cloud wanting it's own software.

#

honestly 10 euro for 5TB is nothing.

#

Will probably turn on compression not sure if it will help a lot.

#

A lot of videos and photos. Already compressed.

glossy glacier
night girder
#

what setup? raid?

#

altough that shouldn't matter I think for uploading ๐Ÿค”

twin dew
glossy glacier
#

ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

night girder
#

๐Ÿค”

#

And you notice a differentce between rsync and ... ?

twin dew
#

rsync (via ssh) is VERY slow ( ~85 Mbit/s)
So not that slow, just slow in comparison to stuff that is expected to work on fast links.
Edit: Not on Synology.

glossy glacier
#

a syno nas can do the full ~100MB/s on a 1Gbps network with SMB, but barely do 5MB/s with rsync

twin dew
#

Ok, yeah, Synology was slower, 15MB/s in one part.
But rsync is very old protocol.

#

But it is the best generic protocol that that Hyper Backup supports.

night girder
#

There is also other packages. Active Backup for Google workspace etc.

#

but hyper seems to be most broad.

twin dew
#

<Synologys own ecosystem>
Remote Synology NAS or rsync servers
Public cloud services: Synology C2 Storage, Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft Azure, JD Cloud, OpenStack Swift, Rackspace, HiDrive, hicloud S3, S3 Storage (and other S3-compatible backup destinations)

#

Support for various specific services via their own special protocols, but rsync is the only "standard" one, with S3 Storage approaching that at this point.

night girder
#

What's the hourly rate about?

#

๐Ÿคจ

twin dew
#

Ah, that is even different. No was right.

night girder
#

why?

twin dew
#

Need for higher space for short time?
Or just needing space at all for short time.

night girder
#

but it says it for traffic ๐Ÿ˜’

#

Oh, for both. The little "i".

twin dew
#

Note you don't need extra traffic.
That is for downloads, not uploads.

#

So you need that only if you need to restore.

night girder
#

ok ...

#

So I only add that when I need to download the backup?

twin dew
#

Some is used when uploading, but not significant amounts,

#

As in confimation traffic etc.

night girder
#

๐Ÿ˜’

#

why so complicated ffs

#

I know they call it "flexibable" but it feels like a scam.

#

Like, I pay for storage.

#

How is my data going to get to storage if not by "traffic" ?

#

So why not ask just one price ffs.

twin dew
night girder
#

So what am I getting?

#

a container that I can use also for a website?

#

But also for storage or something?

#

In what scenario, would I have 1TB storage and 10TB outgoing traffic?

#

If I have a company and everyone is pulling in that 1TB constantly?

twin dew
#

S3 Object storage is often used as backend for sites etc.

#

For images etc.

night girder
#

Riggght... started to get that feeling mhm.

#

I should contact Hetzner support. And ask them the questions.

#

all I can contact is an AI ๐Ÿ™

#

or a telephone pff.

#

Not even a mail adres.

twin dew
#

Customer support costs, if you want that, you don't go for the cheapest possible.

night girder
#

Yeah ... but not even an email for real?

#

The money they spend on the crap AI which will 100% not give an answer to my questions, they could spend on a human.

#

I don't imagine Hetzner being so big they get 500000 mails a day.

#

Let's give it a try shall we?

#

Damn, it did give me a somewhat decent answer.

#

So, traffic is min 1TB (I can select 500GB but pricing stays the same). If you go above, you pay 1 dollar per TB or something in blocks of 100MB.

#

whatr cloud do you use @twin dew ?

pure karma
#

i bet none

twin dew
#

None at that time.
I should, but haven't gotten far enough.
That was the point of why I had looked onto those couple several years ago.

night girder
#

wtf... you of all people

#

you dissapoint me ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

cloud storage is just a waste still

night girder
#

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

Your data, I don't care what happens to it.

#

To me it's too important too lose. So backing it up. Makes me sleep better.

pure karma
#

it costs more than getting the drives yourself

night girder
#

Why spend all the effort in getting a NAS, setting it up, and then not to the final think to make it foolproof.

pure karma
#

i could get using a free 5GB plan for backing stuff up but thats not storing stuff

night girder
#

IIt's like so much effort, but then not putting the cherry on top of the cake, and then all your drives get fucked and you just lost all your data.

pure karma
#

there a diffrence between sotring and bakcing up

night girder
#

You can backup your NAS to other drives and put them in a vault seperate place.

#

Then take them out of the vault every month, plugin them in, back up and put them back in a vault. Yeah. That can work.

pure karma
#

i dont back up anything

#

backing up 12TB is too expensive to care about

twin dew
night girder
#

So you have 12TB of data.

#

you don't give shit about to backup.

#

Why keep it?

twin dew
#

12TB?
No, I don't have 12TB of data.

night girder
#

Baldur ... ๐Ÿ˜‰ a little bit up. Not you. MagicZ.

#

Should have used the reply feature my bad!

pure karma
#

i wont loose sleep over most of the stuff i could loose from a drive failure

twin dew
#

I have about 100GB of data that I actually care about, 10GB or so that would be semi-critical.

pure karma
#

2TB goes to windows which i could recover fairly effortlesly

#

2TB of games is jsut redownloadable

twin dew
#

All that is already mirrored and backed up inside same system on different mirrors with snapshotting.

#

But need to get that NAS up too.

#

For actual backups.
And then get cloud backups for the most important shit.

night girder
#

Not judging.

#

But I did not expect that from you Baldur.

#

I did expect that from MagicZ though ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

and then i have a 8TB drive of videos and old stuff i dont use but want to keep that isent full + laptop and some other drives

night girder
#

probably recording 24/7 4K videos and too lazy to clean it up, so they keep buying more storage ๐Ÿคฃ

twin dew
#

Limited time.
"Lost" basically all free time for stuff like that this year to other shit.

pure karma
#

so overall outside of passwords and acounts i really have nothing i would loose sleep over

night girder
#

I did use up a lot of your time.

pure karma
night girder
#

Freaking new it!

twin dew
pure karma
#

i have some going back to 2023 but there not actually taking much space

night girder
twin dew
#

Talking here doesn't count in that at all basically.

night girder
#

Shiiiit, you haven't forgotten

#

haha ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

ok thats more than i tought but still only 25%

#

also i dont record in 4K

#

mostly 1440P 60FPS and upscale if i need

visual tree
#

I haven't reached 1 TB yet but close to it

pure karma
visual tree
#

I also keep very important data on multiple locations while not-so important data is on NAS

night girder
#

well, 2026 I will focus on my NAS and all my data spread across multiple devices.

visual tree
#

I mean, I would feel bad if something happened to NAS data but not much tbh

night girder
#

But before I throw everything to my NAS, I want to make sure it's backed up.

pure karma
#

i should really go through my storage again

#

i havent since 2023 and its really becoming a problem

night girder
#

I have 2 drives with photography (.raw) files.
2 drives with entertainment. 2-3 dead laptops to recover data from. 1 PC to recover data from.
My current PC and laptop.

#

Hope to have one ring to rule them all. My NAS ๐Ÿ˜„

#

but seems I am better prepared than most in here.

visual tree
#

I should probably backup this to NAS too hehe

night girder
#

Man ... why do you even have that on your system.

#

I saw 2-3 pictures on a YT video and got nausieus. ๐Ÿคฎ Bunch of rich white men with girls that have their names on them like they are some sort of product.

rustic panther
#

Heck yeah, NASes

visual tree
#

I guess you could say curiosity has killed a cat lol

pure karma
night girder
#

No, Asablic with Epstein files.

pure karma
#

its supposed to autodelete after some time normally but mine nerver did and i nerver needed the space

night girder
#

That's disturbing.

pure karma
#

oh

night girder
visual tree
#

I want to see if there is some confidential data which has been redacted in acrobat reader but you can copy it to word tbh

rustic panther
night girder
#

He is not from the US! ๐Ÿคฃ

#

It has nothing to do with us.

visual tree
#

But it's always good to know about the world secrets!

night girder
#

hahaha, secrets ... yeah ... haha, most well known secret.

rustic panther
visual tree
#

Maybe someone left crypto wallet seed key in there ๐Ÿคฃ

#

And forgot to redact it

night girder
#

and 80 bucks for 24TB sounds sketchy.

#

but ideal for a media station if you don't care for the data hehe

rustic panther
pure karma
#

why are you so stressed over data loss tho????

rustic panther
pure karma
#

even my decade old M.2 hasent had any significant data loss

night girder
#

Why aren't you?

rustic panther
#

But everything was honored, no emails or anything

pure karma
#

iv nerver had a storage drive fail from internal factors

rustic panther
#

So, yknow, we take those?

night girder
#

I had. And pictures of my family, people who are dead, ... I don't want to lose that.

#

It used to be all on paper (for my grandparents etc). Now it's all digital.

night girder
#

I also have 200GB worth of music since my puberty. Like 20 years + of music collection.

pure karma
#

but print them out?

night girder
#

Just the library alone is super important to me.

night girder
#

I do wonder what happens if I die ๐Ÿคฃ Will it be forever in the cloud.

pure karma
#

a plastified printed pic is more flood resitant than a storage drive

rustic panther
#

I'm not a biker, but I'd still wear a helmet and protective jacket all the time even though it's likely that it wouldnt be necessary on any individual trip

visual tree
#

My most important file is KeePass database lol. I keep it in 4 locations: my PC, USB, NAS and cloud

rustic panther
#

Something about having to be unlucky only once to be screwed

visual tree
#

And the master password is stored in my head and a piece of paper

night girder
#

honestly, if people think about it, that's already big step. MagicZ clearly though about and just has the conclussions it's all data they can miss. I understand that.

pure karma
#

having to manually copy every file i own to a bunch of drives on a diffrent pc through usb sticks sounds like such a pain in the ass

#

i dont care enough

#

i backup my passwords on a few usb's at once aswell as both my pc's and thats all i really care about

#

everything else can be recovered from there or isent the end of the world

visual tree
#

I could set PC to backup password database to 3 locations at the same time and then put it on USB stick later

#

So I don't have to do it manually every time

night girder
#

Eh, I am not sure. The more places you store the DB, the more points of vulnerability you add. And if it's all your passwords.

twin dew
#

My keepass DB is on my three Windows computers, my phone, and dropbox.
And dropbox doesn't have the corresponding key file (+ password), but that keyfile has printed backups instead.

night girder
#

brute force is still a thing ...

#

if you update your passwords every x months, it shouldn't be a problem.

twin dew
#

Without that keyfile it can only be done direct on the DB file main encryption.

#

As it basically forms part of the password.

#

So they would need to brute force the actual 256bit AES or ChaCha20 key
Not the manual password used to unlock the actual key.

night girder
#

It is likely, if not inevitable, that quantum computers will soon be able to break the encryption methods that secure your passwords, your data, and anything else kept under digital lock and key.

#

In a 2021 research paper, Google engineer Craig Gidney and his coauthor suggested that it would take eight hours for a quantum computer with 20-million noisy qubits to factor RSA-2048 encryption.

#

I know, but still. It's something in the back of my mind. I would rather store DB on a device that's not connected to the internet (usb stick. floppy disk, cd, ...)

pure karma
#

with new year pretty close what would you guys rate your 2025

#

im genuinely curious

#

cause i think my 2025 was overall solid despite all the stuff that happened but everyone says 2025 sucked

visual tree
#

3/5

#

Could be worse ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

yea id give myself like i think a 9/10

visual tree
#

You'll drop the rating when you see RAM prices next year lol

pure karma
#

yea i think next yea will drop

#

i just went through my phone and found what my setup looked like at the start of the year and realised how far iv come this year

visual tree
#

I am going to shoot myself if 32 GB of RAM is going to cost more than 50% of PC hardware total cost (although it already does for some brands....)

night girder
#

Personal year progression?

#

World year progression?

#

Technology year progression?

pure karma
#

january vs now

night girder
#

What are we rating, because all 3 are different to me.

pure karma
night girder
#

Personal 4/5.

#

World 2/5.

pure karma
#

avoiding other people and the world what was your 2025

#

yea fair

night girder
#

Technology 1/5. It got totally fucked by big tech and Trump.

pure karma
#

agreed with that one

night girder
#

and I just calling a dog a dog here.

#

And no.

#

Next year wont drop I think. I posted about it a while back.

pure karma
#

everyone thinking asus was gonna solve the shortage proves the average person ahs no understanding of the situation

night girder
#

Nah.

#

People in here were still on copium while I was posting articles of one after another vendor deciding to leave us in the cold.

#

and focus on AI companies when it came to RAM.

pure karma
#

yea that was a cold but expected move

#

i hope there money catches on fire and they burn with it

night girder
#

Micron foretold issues untill 2027.

visual tree
#

Saw a lot of videos about how Asus was going to save the RAM market and consumers and was like: "Yeah, that's not going to happen" ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
visual tree
#

Expecting corporations to save consumers is worse than trusting the government

#

But that's just cynical me ๐Ÿ˜…

night girder
#

that was early this month.

#

Transcendโ€™s letter describes Q4 price moves of 50โ€“100% in just seven days, while CyberPowerPC warns that system price increases will likely persist into 2026 unless component pricing normalizes.

#

Red94 cites Reuters interviews with smartphone makers who warn that handset prices may rise 20โ€“30% by midโ€‘2026 purely due to higher memory costs.

Red94 cites SK Hynix as projecting that new conventional DRAM capacity will not come online until 2027โ€“2028, implying sustained tightness until at least 2027. Red94

Doesn't read as; "there is a light at the end of a tunnel".

#

It reads more like... there is more end of the tunnel at the end of the tunnel ๐Ÿคฃ

visual tree
#

Thanks for rubbing the salt in the wound Letterdief, I needed that ๐Ÿคฃ

night girder
#

and meanwhile China took aciton again.

#

News from today on Reuters.

visual tree
#

At least I managed to upgrade RAM on my work laptop before the RAM craze began

#

Although I don't follow laptop RAM prices lately

night girder
#

Which if true, will further fuel the tech war untill it spirals out of control and everyone is in isolationism mode.

visual tree
#

Not to mention if China invades Taiwan, electronics prices will skyrocket

night girder
#

Fucking AI...

visual tree
#

Wish people realized AI is a tool which has it's strengths and weaknesses and it's not some miracle device which will solve all problems

#

But guess corporations literally think it's some miracle device

night girder
#

Most people believe what AI companies and leaders tell them.

#

it's snake-oil sold by the rich and powerful.

#

and since they went all in on it, which is at best a calculated risk, they wont turn back now.

visual tree
#

Unfortunately this

night girder
#

I do miss NFTs now ๐Ÿ™

#

There was a year where every company vowed on NFTS. Like most major game studios had some near years speech mentioning NFTS.

#

Now it got replaced by AI ๐Ÿ™ˆ

visual tree
#

Maybe we will go back to times when people didn't have electronics and had to go out and have fun and maybe it's a good thing

night girder
#

atleast NFT didn't mess up hardware market.

visual tree
#

But the world will collapse because it's too dependent on technology

night girder
night girder
#

And then it blooms for a good period of time.

#

Since we exist, you can pretty much divide history between "dark ages" and "light ages"

visual tree
#

"When JC Denton destroys Area 51 at the end of Deus Ex, the center of multimedia communication and the Aquinas communication grid, the Internet is disabled and humanity descends into a period of war and economic recession known as The Collapse."

night girder
#

Eh, not sure if it will be a singular event.

#

Most of the time it's the accumulation of events over years leading to "climax" hehe

#

when the stars are aligned, we go to war.
when the stars are aligned, we make peace.

#

and war in the broad sense, economical, culutral, physical, cyber, political, ...

#

the only accute threat I believe is real atm, is nuclear.

#

and I mean, threat that is imminent and can fuck the world in a few seconds.

#

just needs one wrong interpretation and the missiles are send... that's what I believe

#

it's not mentioned anymore, because I don't think they want to scare us. But that doesn't mean the threat is gone.

Something similar already happened but we were lucky: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanislav_Petrov

exactly! That's what was on my mind too.

#

Thank god for people who use their brain.

visual tree
#

I feel sorry for the guy because they punished him in the end when he literally saved the world

night girder
#

His subsequent decision to disobey orders, against Soviet military protocol,[3] is credited with having prevented an erroneous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its NATO allies that would have likely resulted in a large-scale nuclear war.

#

He should have gotten a medal, from every fucking country in the world tbh ๐Ÿคฃ

visual tree
#

They were like: "We don't care if you saved the world, you disobeyed our orders and that's the only thing that matters"

night girder
#

I haven't looked it up yet. But I heard france also has a nuclear nukes

#

And most of these countries have this ambigious "if the existence of our country is treatened... then we are allowed to use it."
Which is for interpretation ofc. So they can use it whenever the fuck they want.

#

Which technically would allow france to take in land, say it's french soil, and if they want to take it back "the existence is threatened" and the nuclear option is on the table.

#

just got to make sure to take land of a non nuclear country ๐Ÿ˜›

visual tree
#

Hope France doesn't let us carry nukes since we recently bought Rafale from them ๐Ÿ˜…

#

Not sure if it's the BF3 version though

night girder
#

It's this situation since the first nukes got developed.

#

nobody wants to use it, nobody wants to lower the guns, so we have to keep pointing the guns to keep others in check.

#

It's a situation that's never got solved. We just ignore and live with it.

#

if solved, all countries would have started to reduce nukes. But instead, we are increasing production.

#

Not we, but the US.

visual tree
#

Oh, you are referring to MAD doctrine but it assumes people are rational

#

All it takes is some crazy person and we are cooked

#

I find it ironic that they named it the MAD doctrine hehe

night girder
#

I think ... what I really hoped for was they actually never opened pandora's box.

#

and never developed nukes. The world, and I mean literally our planet, would have been safer without them.

visual tree
#

We already did open pandora's box, it's called AI hehe

night girder
#

Nah, AI is nothing without nukes.

#

but now if AI really does what we see in the movies, it can take over submarines and launch nukes I guess?

#

AI is harmless, as long as it doesn't have tools for mass destruction ๐Ÿคฃ

#

but on the bright side, US submarines still updated with floppy disks.

#

because of no internet, for obvious reasons.

#

and they can't update the system either, technical difficulties ๐Ÿคฃ

visual tree
#

My nephew doesn't know about AI since he is a toddler but he is already terrified of Roomba lol

night girder
#

I 100% don't want to be the IT guy that needs to update a nuclear submarine or the weapon system of the nukes itself ๐Ÿคฃ

visual tree
#

He won't sleep in his bed unless we remove Roomba from the room

night girder
#

"Update failed... Launching all nukes. Have a nice day." - FUCK.

visual tree
#

At first, my nephew was curious about Roomba but later developed fear for some reason

#

Probably because it's loud and it might look like it's chasing you from his perspective

#

Hard to tell what's going inside a toddler's mind

night girder
#

should put some kids stickers on it, to make it more kids friendly

visual tree
#

But he is smart enough to know which remote belongs to which device. If I give him AC remote for TV, he will give it back and look for the TV remote

night girder

mhh...

maybe he is so smart, he already knows what's up ๐Ÿคฃ

#

can't trust technology

#

also might be confused with Bumba and Ruumba.

visual tree
#

Probably. At first, he was obsessed with Roomba but he doesn't like it anymore

night girder
#

mhm, I remember reading somethbing about Roomba this eyar.

visual tree
#

The company went bankrupt

night girder
#

Yeah hehe

visual tree
#

because the competition sells cheaper robot vacuum with better specs

night girder
#

how the fuck did they pull that off.

#

damn, sounds like a lot of fuck ups and free market at work here!

visual tree
#

They had a huge ego and though their robot vacuum is the best when in reality it's just overpriced and competitors can offer the same thing for less

night girder
#

Good to hear. robot vacuum cleaners are still expensive for what a "additional cleaning tool" is.
Most of those robot vendors say you still need to use a regular vacuum cleaner to keep the house thighty.
So it's not even a replacement.

visual tree
#

I love it because I despise cleaning under the bed and hard-to-reach areas

#

But still use regular vacuum for some areas Roomba can't reach

#

Best combo is robot vacuum + cordless vacuum

night girder
#

Yeah, I still want one. But my current living place isn't suited for it.

visual tree
#

I remember when we had an electric lawn mower 20 years ago. I hated it so much because we have a big garden and moving the cable was a nightmare

night girder
#

The robot will struggle ๐Ÿ˜‰

night girder
#

this thing is a life safer for fixing the cable ๐Ÿคฃ

visual tree
#

I drove over a rock hidden in the grass 1 month after buying a new gasoline lawn mower. Damaged the blades ๐Ÿ˜ญ

night girder
#

100% not safe for moisture etc.

#

I also need a robot vacuum cleaner that can handle animal hairs.

visual tree
#

We had a tabby cat long time ago

I burried a cat 2 years ago.

a year later, goverment called and said they had to dig open the yard for a river.

at the spot where I burried my cat ofc ... =_=

I was not amused.

and now I got a fucking river in my garden too ๐Ÿคฃ

the car isn't to blame ๐Ÿคฃ

#

funny story, a while back, I made my first emergency brake.

#

where the car comes to a full stop and the blinkers automatically go on because it assumed I was in an accident of some sort.
Or made emergency brake.

#

the reason. a frog on the road ๐Ÿคฃ

#

I went full stop for a freaking frog. Nobody was behind me anyway.

visual tree
#

I tried adaptive cruise control on rain once, never doing it again

The car detected "nothing" and applied brakes

Not to mention line assist is a nightmare on curved roads because it thinks you are switching lanes and forces your steering wheel

night girder
#

doesn't suprise me at all

#

I have a lot of false possitives in my car for collision.

#

on empty roads.

visual tree
#

I try turning all that shit off, the technology is not reliable yet

night girder
#

and I haven't found out what is causing it. Must be light or something.

#

or certain shapes + contrast + light ...

still thinking about buying that hacking device.

visual tree

Btw, my personal mechanic confirmed start/stop feature damages the engine which I suspected from the very beginning. I turn that thing off each time I use my car

night girder
#

So happy to pay 20-40k on a car, that I don't really own, but EU does hehe

visual tree
#

The mechanic also said electric cars are very expensive to repair. People fall for the "if it has no moving parts, it's cheaper to repair" bullshit

#

Not to mention the inverter and battery will go dead after 10 years and you might as well dispose of your electric car

night girder
#

not that, it's all cars.

visual tree
#

I replaced brakes on my car 2 years ago and I barely used the car. Went to a yearly inspection and I passed but they mentioned brakes on the left and right side don't brake equally

I was like: "Are you saying my new brakes already have issues?"

I guess EU doesn't want us to buy brand new cars and use older ones. Because they do everything in their power to make them less appealing.

if you buy new car manufactured after that date, in the EU, you will get all those systems mandatory.

you can turn it off, per travel. So car turn on/off = reset again.

visual tree
#

I don't think I'll be ever getting a new car again

#

If I need it for special circumstances, there are apps which let you borrow a shared car

#

Much cheaper than buying a car which only eats your money

night girder

Still thinking about buying older car and fix it up myself.

I might have someone who can help me out with it.

I have 157.000 km on my 16 year old car. It will still last but the repair costs are higher than the fuel cost....

#

My city is going to buy new buses for free public transport and at that point, I won't be needing a car anymore

#

They are building a charging station 50 meters away from my home. Pray they put a stop sign near my home lol

#

Not to mention my city is small and you can get anywhere fast by walking or using a bicycle

I think bicycles can be great. But not like in Amsterdam.

in the end you are just shifting traffic from cars to bicycles.

But after several years, restaurants became too dependant on them because of larger customer pool and food delivery companies then started charging higher prices because they know restaurants can't survive without their service

using the same electric motor for both is something i've never seen attempted before

twin dew
#

Doesn't even seem to be using same motors for both.
But separate wheel/rotor guards and then propeller motors inside the wheel spindle.
Instead of just using the propellers as the spokes too and rotating outer edge.

#

One motor per side for wheels, shared with gearing.
And then one motor per rotor.

#

So just using the bad wheels as overweight rotor guards.

#

And that wheel gearing gets busted very fast by any real use, even if switching to light metals.

#

In that prototype, it is all just 3D printed plastic.

soft bloom
#

unlikely it will ever be same motor for wheel and rotor
those (seem to be) very different kinds of loads
rc flight channel showed how much efficiency changes for same motor when you change propeller shape... so now imagine changing not just that, but also rpm and torque applied on the motor
wheels go slow and sometimes need a lot of force to go upheel,
rotors go fast and can change rpm rapidly

twin dew
#

There is reason why there is always some kind of gearbox between electric motor and ground wheel. Usually just fixed gearing one.

#

Letting the electric motor to run at much faster RPM than with direct drive.

soft bloom
#

On the topic f combining technologies... usually it doesn't work.
I am honestly surprised that we got to see CPU being universal,
and that comes with big asteriks:

  1. it operates on boolean oeprations, with everything possible to be done built around that limitation/concept
  2. it still uses a bunch of very specific parts to do very specific operations, so in reality it's a swiss knife in disguise
soft bloom
twin dew
twin dew
# twin dew One motor per side for wheels, shared with gearing. And then one motor per rotor...

In this, for the top wheel, it just goes motor to that small gear, to the wheel inner surface gearing.
Two gears with fixed ratio between them.
For the bottom wheel, it goes to the larger gear under the small one, then through two other same size gears, into that second wheels small gear, to the wheels inner surface gearing.
Where most of that is just to move the force around, and just that small gear to wheel acts as really a ratio changing gearbox.

But usually you have multiple stages, to keep the size down.

Question: since power outage can damage electronics, is it better to install a surge protector in your breaker box or hook up a battery to a solar inverter so you get immediatelly notified when there is a power outage and you can shutdown your electronics properly on time or disconnect them

#

Every time a power outage happens, I am like: "Great, guess something will stop working soon...."

bronze jasper
# visual tree Question: since power outage can damage electronics, is it better to install a s...

that was more of a concern in the past as i understand it, but i also never run without a surge protector still to this day.

They're kind of like bike helmets. once they've protected a couple of big surges, they're kind of damaged and don't protect as well after that. (bike helmets should be replaced after any significant impact, not a few).

so you want them in places where they're easily replaceable. but also, some houses do get wired up with surge protectors in the box. those are just more expensive than power strips are.

visual tree
#

I have APC surge protectors for my PC and a TV but I would like a "central" surge protector which would protect the whole house

#

But not sure if backup battery might be a better option

#

2 kW battery should be enough so I can shutdown everything properly in 1 hour

bronze jasper
#

older electronics would pop the moment they caught any amount of out of spec surge. i think it's mostly fine now a days, though it's still smart to mitigate surges hitting your machines

#

bronze jasper
#

i live in a very power outage heavy area. 70 - 100 foot trees are everywhere in this forest, rising high above the power lines. branches and trees fall all the time.

night girder
#

Asablic, it sounds you are looking into seperate things tbh.

backup battery != surge protection afaik.

bronze jasper

night girder
#

Your residence doesn't have that?

#

I though it was mandatory. Can be wrong ๐Ÿ™ˆ

bronze jasper
#

thats a more robost surge protector that would go on a circuit breaker.

i think we're talking about the ones that are power strips that plug into the outlet. while they don't guard against big surges, they're good enough for residential use.

#

and countries with 240v might want to have a little more protection than countries with 120v

visual tree
visual tree
night girder
#

it just makes more sense to put protection where electricity enters the house instead of every seperate device in the whole household.
But that's just me ๐Ÿ™ˆ

night girder

Because if you pull that off, you don't have to worry and think about it again when you plug in more devices over the years.

And a backup battery might be good for your NAS etc. Things that don't like it when they are turned off nilly willy ๐Ÿ˜›

bronze jasper
#

They only make 30% of your electricity bill if you have some really OLD fridge

#

I have a 10 year old fridge but never understood how those experts calculated that 30% of your electrical bill goes to a fridge

#

Here, experts keep repeating that fridge is the biggest consumer of electricity but my math doesn't add up

#

My air conditioners consume more in a year than a fridge

jagged snow
#

Yeah, a fridge consumes incredibly little actually

#

I think it's just politics

visual tree
#

Here is a report how much a single AC unit in my home consumed electricity in 12 months

#

Can't extract a report for multiple units unfortunately

soft bloom
#

nice to have other means of heating

jagged snow
#

Yeah
I'm still on purely electric heat and it's terrible

visual tree
#

I use gas boiler for heating but plan on totally switching to AC heating when I install solar panels

#

Because radiator pipes are old and outdated and I don't want to remove new flooring so I can install new pipes

#

Inverter AC that offers heating is almost identical as using a heat pump

jagged snow
#

That is a heat pump hehe

visual tree
#

I mean, it's 95% the same but there are probably some differences

jagged snow
#

The differences are marketing ๐Ÿ˜„

#

(realistically there are some differences in pressure ratios and condensor/evap sizing)

visual tree
#

Heat pumps here have both indoor and outdoor units and they are also connected to fan convectors or wall-mount AC

#

While a typical individual AC has an indoor and outdoor unit only

#

I think the keyword is that a heat pump is usually centralized while a standard AC is not. Each unit is an AC itself

#

Although the way they work is identical

twin dew
#

Not really.
Just some weird way marketing works in your country.

jagged snow
#

They do the same in US

#

Use "heat pump" to refer to central, forced air heating as a marketing term

visual tree
jagged snow
#

But really heat pump is just that specific type of phase change cooling with a compressor and refrigerant, evaporator and condensor

visual tree
#

If you wanted to install a new AC, called your HVAC technician and said: "I want to install a heat pump in my room" instead of saying AC, a HVAC technician would be confused

#

Or if you wanted to replace 3 AC units in your house and told your HVAC technician you want to install 3 heat pumps, he would be even more confused

#

Example: When we say "AC" here, we mean on this

#

But when we say heat pump, we mean this

twin dew
#

"ilmalรคmpรถpumppu" for the models that just have air at both ends as the transfer medium in Finland.
ilma = air
lรคmpรถpumppu = "heat pump"

#

Then for example "maalรคmpรถpumppu" with maa = ground for ones that have the outer unit instead with underground piping of some sort etc.

visual tree
#

The main difference here is that a heat pump has an outdoor and inside unit. An indoor unit is then connected to floor heating, radiators, fan convectors, water tank or wall-mount AC or whatever setup you have in your home

#

At least, that's how marketing works here

twin dew
#

ilma-vesilรคmpรถpumppu (air water heat pump) with air outside and water inside.

visual tree
#

I guess it's primarily marketing issue here

twin dew
#

Yeah, used the generic base name for one very specific version.

#

So all the others need weird names instead.

visual tree
#

I can't install a central heat pump here because I have one-pipe radiator system and they are not compatible

#

I think a high-temperature heat pump might be compatible with one-pipe system but they are much more expensive

twin dew
#

But for languages without combination words, somewhat expected.
When in Finnish you can just slap stuff together and it doesn't end in something weird like the english direct translations.

I live on the coast so it gets to -15 here but that's worse than -20 in drier higher climates

Coast air is thicker so has more thermal capacity. Wetter so it's less of an insulator

A lot of people don't believe me when I say coast air is different, and then they get out here and realize why we all dress with layers when it's still above zero

I regret not insulating outer walls with rockwool and went with EPS styrofoam instead

The problem with styrofoam is that it won't let the walls "breathe"

bronze jasper
#

I just checked and it looks like Winnipegs utility companies are offering heat pump rebates

visual tree
#

We have EU funds for heat pumps but you need to have an energy certificate for your home and your home needs to have a high energy/insulation rating

#

Because heat pumps are worthless if your home insulation is poor and the air keeps escaping everywhere

#

I don't understand people who recently built a home and decided to install an AC or a heat pump without even insulating outer walls

#

Some of them have bricks which aren't even covered by plaster on the outside

#

I think we recently adopted a law which requires new homes to cover outer walls with plaster or something else in 5 years so you don't see those ugly brick homes

#

An example of a house in my city where there is no insulation but multiple AC units

#

Whoever laid the bricks made a very poor job and using multiple air conditioners in a house with no insulation is a nightmare

This gives me a heart attack each time I see this house

Which is how it is usually done in new buildings (internal insulation)
External insulation is for cludging older buildings up to code.

#

And that multiple small ACs gives better per room temperature control, and might even be cheaper than central AC with ducting.

#

And cavity wall insulation is also very common too.
But based on the brick patterns, that really was built by idiots as some really weird version of solid brick wall, not the "standard" one of that.
Still might have that inside insulation.

The IEA estimates that โ€œspace coolingโ€ โ€” mostly air conditioning but also fans โ€” consumed around 2,100 terawatt-hours (TWh) of power in 2022.

For context, global electricity use in 2022 was around
29,000 TWh. That means AC uses around 7% of the worldโ€™s electricity.4 Thatโ€™s nearly 20% of electricity use in buildings.

#

Of course, some of this electricity comes from fossil fuels, so AC is also a driver of carbon emissions. The IEA estimates that space cooling caused around 1 billion tonnes of CO2 from electricity use in 2022.

Thatโ€™s around** 2.7% of total CO2 emissions** from fossil fuels and industry.5

I will keep resisting AC as long as I can. They are a solution to a problem (heat). And the "solution" actually feeds the problem further.
