M.2 contains other signals beside those three included in that screenshot (SATA, PCI, USB), depending on variant.

restive widget
#

Ive seen a few a keys

twin dew
#

A-key is weird: 2 x PCIe x1, USB 2.0, I2C and DP x4

A+E is common, but I really wouldn't expect to see pure A anywhere.

#

Is that for some kind of weird PCIe 1x DP capture card, or weird PCIe 1x DP output GPU?

dire igloo
#

to clarify: M.2 is both connector and formfactor

twin dew
#

Family of form factors, denoted by the numbers after (size in mm, width in first two, then length in rest)

#

With 1216 being soldered, not card with connector.

twin dew
#

Tried to keep it simplified.
Same with that U.2 being both the connector, that most in consumer space would care for (PCIe over standardized cable and connectors), and the end device dimensions.

#

Where you care about the device dimensions if you are using hot-swap backplanes and drive cages.

Thx Nintento, you even managed to mess up hdmi cable

Marginal for the settings.
Nintendo only had to include one that worked up to what Switch can output.

Or bought it from a sketchy distributor and now you are distributing it to customers.....

I once worked in college IT department and college principal compalined why do we need to replace broken server UPS with a new one

#

He shut his mouth when my boss told him we don't need UPS but the college website will go down if we lose power 😅

dire igloo
#

It's always funny to tell people in charge about fallback infrastructure and emergency safety nets

#

"we can certainly do without, but then XYZ might happen. Oh, and we'd be in violation of idk how many laws and regulations"

twin dew
#

Or like those UPSes.
Ok, you can do without those.
But there is very high likelyhood that any power-outtage taking the servers down for days to weeks, instead of just for the power outtage.
When they cannot do controlled shutdowns.

visual tree
#

This probably would't happen with SSD but hard drives don't like sudden shutdown

twin dew
#

Major issue is lost writes, leading to inconsistent data.

twin dew
#

Including writing any data still in the drive buffers onto disk while the spindle slows down, and the motor is used as generator for the electronics.

visual tree
#

It's time to retire hard drives hehe

twin dew
#

In turn with consumer grade SSDs, they don't have power loss protection capacitors, that are used to write the redirection table and any in-flight data onto the flash in case of power loss.

#

And with HMB, you don't even have access to that part of the table so you even could try to write and preserve the latest copy.

I once visited the basement of a commercial building and they showed me gigantic UPS'es in the server room

Rotation, rotational or rotary motion is the movement of an object that leaves at least one point unchanged.

#

Ok, seems the official definition also allows for circular motion where the object turns with to count as rotation, so that "intersects object" is not part of it.
Just has to have static axis of rotation around which the object rotates keeping the same relative distances.

#

So left is circular motion, right is also rotation around the central axis/point.

#

So axis of rotation being top-down in the pic.

#

For the right.

soft bloom
#

though theen there's ambiguity in something like rotating around a dot in 3d and so on
which wouldn't really match the intuitve way we think about rotation

twin dew
#

That is 2D pic, so it is dot.
In 3D that would be line top-down.

#

The principal axes of rotation in space:

#

With the actual rotation counting as something in the 3D space, in same way.

#

Those are just component directions we often simplify to.

soft bloom
#

question I had is how to dumb down the idea that you can describe any motion as combination of linear + rotation
linear seems quite intuitive, though I used "same direction" which is along the axis indeed, but that still needs some explanation
and rotation is around axis indeed, keeping same distance. so, does it have be axis of rotation? or is axis just whatever we choose to rotate around?.. heh

twin dew
#

And some motions are none of the three alone.

soft bloom
#

also this reminded me that technically you can describe everything as moving along helix spiral. just tuning parameters of the spiral: linear speed, rotational speed, radi, direction, you can sequence these to describe any motion. though this doesn't touch on object's orientation

soft bloom
soft bloom
twin dew
#

Alone, that spiral for example.

soft bloom
#

oh, alone. ofcourse. that's why I asaid combination

#

as in, spiral is linear + circular

#

not sequentually, but at the same time

#

though you could delta t them and say they are sequentual...

twin dew
#

If such thing was possible, you would have the formulas already in existence.

#

Also remember that even that circular motion only deals with symmetrical or even just actually in circles movement.

Also see about the modeling of solar system as bunch of circles on circles during medieval times on how complex that kind of stuff gets even for just planetary orbits.
Even more when they still tried to do it with earth as the center instead of sun.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

When the planetary orbits aren't exact circles.

soft bloom
#

there's a special case when you can 'draw' aproximation of any shape with furier transform. as in circular upon circular motion with different radi and rotational speed

#

yeah, I am not claiming that it's easy mathematically do describe compelx movement that way

#

but you could programatically. like movements of a robot with different joints

Need either suitable paste for GPU/laptop, or something like PTM7950

bold tapir
twin dew
#

With such high-end phase change pad really recommended.
Thermalright Heilos as little worse alternative.

twin dew
#

Which has happened to your original already.

#

That kind of phase change pads have good enough performance, and don't suffer from either.

#

Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet as another possibly easier to get alternative.

void pine
twin dew
#

So as permanent fix:
Honeywell PTM7950 via some third party seller
Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet
Thermalright Heilos (v2)

As months to years fix depending the exact thermal paste: thermal paste replacement.

bold tapir
#

I inspected gpu and thermal pads seem ok, not 'leaking' idk how is it called when they die

twin dew
#

Thermal pads on the other components don't usually degrade, except if they tear when you remove the cooler.
Any silicone leakage isn't important.
Some recent GPUs had pads that just slid out if the GPU was vertically mounted.

#

And you cannot see the GPU die paste without dismounting the cooler.

bold tapir
#

I don't think im qualified enough to take it apart

#

At least need to see some guides

twin dew
#

And the disassembly is cooler model specific.

bold tapir
#

Can i not fix this with pc case cooling improvement, bc theres like 30 degrees delta no matter what?

twin dew
#

The problem is that large delta between hotspot and main GPU temp, which tells the cooler doesn't have proper contact with the die all over.

#

And that hotspot is hitting throttle limit for it, while main GPU temp is below throttle temp.

bold tapir
#

And it broke bc of heater under desk?

twin dew
#

Manufacturing fault.
Either at speccing of the paste, or in construction of the cold plate.

#

Very common lately for that to happen even under 1 year for new card.

bold tapir
twin dew
#

For some percentage of the cards.

#

Where the coldplate cannot really be fixed, but those phase change materials don't care the coldplate is not as flat it should be.

#

If there was manufacturing fault with that, and that caused the stock paste to fail.
And not just stock paste that wasn't suitable for the use.

bold tapir
#

So only way to fix the problem is to replace thermal paste

bold tapir
twin dew
#

That 110C hotspot is in theory safe.
But your actual performance will keep going down with time, as the card throttles more and more.

bold tapir
#

Performance did not go down yet

twin dew
#

It is very likely already significantly down from when the GPU would hit 95C normal temp throttle.

bold tapir
#

So its already slightly broken?

twin dew
#

With 100-105C hotspot at same time.

#

But depends on the exact card and cooler for how high the normal main GPU temp would rise at max TDP.

bold tapir
#

110 is not ok anyway

@twin dew Remember tha hdmi cable talk yesterday? I had a funny situation. Bought a new 4K terrestrial receiver with Android TV and used an hdmi cable that came with it to connect the receiver to 1080p TV. The receiver did not recognise my TV for some reason until I replaced the hdmi cable with my own one. Later, I used the hdmi cable that came with the receiver to connect my old receiver to another 1080p TV and the cable worked

It's funny how I never had issues with HDMI in the past but suddenly they started appearing

void pine

Talk about HDMI cables?

visual tree
#

Yeah. Noticed HDMI cables that come with receivers or other devices today sometimes don't work but this was never an issue in the past

#

Well, in my case that is

#

At this point, it's actually better to buy some high-quality cable at the store instead of using an hdmi that came with a product

void pine
#

i prefer not to use HDMI at all

visual tree
#

If you have a monitor for your PC, you can use displayport instead but this is not the case with gaming consoles like nintendo switch or tv receivers/android boxes

void pine

because HDMI licensing is weird, and so it is sometimes cheaper for device manufacturers to use a DP to HDMI chip to get the latest HDMI standard

this is commonly done in Apple devices

visual tree

I have a theory that manufacturers expect consumers to have their own higher-quality hdmi cable and that's why they put the cheapest hdmi cable in the box which might not meet minimum specs

i feel like it's just a value add so that they can say it includes one

My HVAC technician got into panic mode when I told him I am planning to install solar panels on the roof and suggested I should pay him €3000 instead so he can install heat pump for hot water so I can later replace combi gas boiler with smaller one for radiators only while the heat pump would supply hot water

#

He was like: "Noooo, you need solar panel mounts for panels, the water will leak into your attic, the roof will start to rot and you will have to replace everything!"

#

Later, I realized he went into panic mode because I am planning to heat my home with AC only and use a small gas or electric boiler for hot water which is much cheaper than the expensive combi boiler and easier to repair

#

In short, he was afraid he would lose a lot of money on me

#

Paid shill detected (or just misinformed idiot):

#

I mean, if you hire a bad installer, there will be leaks but you could use the same logic and say you shouldn't install water pipes in your home because there is a risk a bad plumber could potentially cause leaks in the future

#

Or you shouldn't install electricity in your home because a bad electrician could set your house on fire

bronze jasper
#

firefighters don't hate them. they just bring a lot of new considerations for them. different buildings have different characteristics. solar panels aren't any worse than regular roofs, but a firefighter has to treat them differently if they're there is all.

restive widget
#

depends on the install the 3rd runs from the end of the line for the hot and runs all the way back to the wh or combi boiler (depends on what you have

visual tree
#

I was planning on replacing my broken circulation pump with this one:

restive widget
#

ahh grundfos

visual tree
#

It's connected to a gas boiler and it has a timer/sensor so it only runs when it detects a flow

restive widget
#

that sounds normal

visual tree
#

The old was running constantly which only made me consume more electricity and natural gas since the boiler was constantly trying to warm up return water or whatever you call the water in the 3rd pipe

restive widget
#

plus theres lots of heatloss if the pipes arent insulated

visual tree
#

The new pipes were laid through the garden and they have good insulation. It was the only option since replacing the old pipes meant removing flooring and tiles

restive widget
#

no basement?

visual tree
#

I mean, it's for the kitchen and the old pipes are running under the house

restive widget
#

ohhhhhhh so no basement abd a tiny crawlspace?

visual tree
#

Oh

restive widget
#

so yeha no underground its a crawlspace then

Because ground floor in USA and Europe mean completely different things

to me ground floor is the main level

#

basement is under that

restive widget
#

ye'

visual tree
#

We have no basement, just ground floor, first floor and attic (british english)

restive widget
#

ah

#

there may be a small crawl space under the home where the pipes are run. unless its built older when they werent there

visual tree
#

Unfortunately, there is only concrete under the house 😅

restive widget
#

ok

#

makes sense then

visual tree
#

That's why we had to run new pipes through the garden because removing existing ones would mean pulling out new flooring and tiles

restive widget
#

yeha that is a valid point

visual tree
#

I was also considering getting a heat pump but they are not compatible with one-way pipe system

#

So, in the end, a solution was to simply buy few air conditioners which can cool/heat the room and use a separate gas/electric boiler for heating sanitary water

I'm not sure

It's a fresh build with a decent PSU, and I haven't had any issues with this wiring before

I swapped psu/gpu/mobo all at the same time, so I'm not sure which variable contributed to it

I do know this gpu can have fairly aggressive transients and it could be that the smoothing caps on my psu just aren't quite up to the task or it could be mobo filtering

Tbh all of the GTX1060 GPUs I bought from miners and sold as gaming PCs worked flawlesly, some are in use still

dire igloo
#

One could even argue that used GPUs are often in better shape after mining compared to their gaming equivalent.
Gamers tend to overclock and increase power limit for the sake of more fps, sacrificing temperatures and noise levels in the process.
Miners on the other hand want to increase power efficiency, so they'll reduce power limits and undervolt to reduce power consumption.

This does however exclude custom mining VBIOS which could very well pose a lot of challenges (like disabling video output) when getting it to work for gaming

twin dew
#

And running at constant temp is much less problem for most part than gaming type loads.
Just that some mining GPUs went through completely idiotic cleaning methods before being sold.

main sluice

I get it a lot

twin dew
night girder
#

Nah, it doesn't happen every morning. Hence the word "randomly" and not "every morning when I turn on my monitor".

#

monitor only has DP cable, single monitor plugged into dGPU, nothing else.

tribal kraken
#

Happens for me too, just clicking "dont change". Wonder if disabling the sound devices would help

night girder
#

I though maybe it's when I connect my headset to USB to charge it. But that isn't the case either.

#

Driver updates don't seem to be culprit either since all the rest keeps working.

#

But it started to happen since around time of new GPU, so either new driver problem, caching problem or discord update problem.

tribal kraken
#

Do you use the monitor speakers?

night girder
#

My monitor has audio device yes. But if that's the case, I would get it every mornign no?

Unless it's just buggy?

I turn of my screen every night.

tribal kraken
#

For me it happens when I wake my PC from sleep, and this was before the new LG TV that I recently bought

night girder
#

But if you all have it happen too, I am inclined to think it's a Discord issue.
It would be different if windows detects new audio device, but it's only discord 🤣

#

All I can find in the logs is "Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.441.809.0) - Current Channel (Broad)"

#

But that would be wild a security update triggers this, or a reset on one of my USB ports.

tribal kraken
#

Not really big issue for me, just one click on the "dont change" before joining VoIP channels

night girder
#

Oh, not an issue.

#

But just weird that it triggers without me changing audio device. And I haven't found the logic in it.

IF what baldur says is true, it would happen every morning.

Next time it happens, I should take note of which audio device it detected (headset or monitor).

tribal kraken
#

Yeah. I might also try to disable the sound devices for each monitor, as I dont use them at all

night girder
#

Or my monitor is the culprit and not always sending same data when starting up.

#

So sometimes my systems mistake it as a new device 🤷‍♂️

And between those two cards, 5070 is slightly slower than 9070xt and 5070ti is distinctly faster. For my part I'd be willing to pay an extra 50-100usd for a 9070xt over a 5070 and if you see a 5070ti within 50usd of either of them buy that.

I will whine about LLMs seem to code even worse
Don't ask why I am trying to get it to code... I just kind of need them to, and it makes me frustrated cause I read that code and it's just.... argh

mental oriole
#

I'm not surprised, it just goes

night girder
#

Jetbrains went full LLM for their IDE's.

#

it's about 100 euro a year to use their "pro AI"

#

UE 5.7 also added AI to their editor.

placid nimbus
#

i feel like this is the proper place for this...

i made a factory builder in 2 days. it's not very good and certainly not fun but it's the first one i've ever really finished.

i mean, it was pretty fun to make although i did not do very good lol.

soft bloom
#

Maybe just a weird quirk of how it merges different sources

#

But latepy beenn getting real crappy for loops

jagged snow
soft bloom
#

And it doesn't seem like it can be fixed by prompt. It just doesn't know how to be better

jagged snow
#

I can't imagine how a company like ms functions with so many devs just taking straight AI code and shoving it into prod

#

(Oh wait, they don't hehe)

night girder
#

It just keep giving me the wrong answers.

#

So much talent goes to waste...

jagged snow
#

Try prompting it about regex

night girder
#

I lost more time than I won by using it I think.

jagged snow
#

That happens so often

#

The best use I've found for it is to give me things to research

#

I.E. need a new programming technique to solve a problem, prompt AI, research the techniques it suggested as well as any I can find on my own

night girder
#

Yeah high level it's fine. But the details/implementations/actual code ... no.

jagged snow
night girder
#

And especially niche stuff, it really sucks at it

jagged snow
#

All I wanted to do was grep -Po '#define\s+\S+' > someFile

night girder
#

it's frustrating

jagged snow
#

Yeah, very much so

#

Especially when VScode re-enables all the AI features after every update no matter how many times I turn them off

#

I don't need copilot trying to guess what the rest of this line will be because it's wrong

night girder
#

I tried installing VSCodium today. Which went fine. But then I wanted UE editor to pick it up. And it was a no-go.
Put it into the path. Symlinked it. Added to editorconfig.ini of UE5. Nada.

jagged snow
#

Lol
I had a similar issue with expo build tools/gradle on linux

#

You're supposed to just be able to set $ANDROID_HOME for your skd path but it turns out that that just... doesn't work sometimes
You have to manually edit the generated config files and insert the path yourself

night girder
#

that's why someone suggested Jetbrains Rider which can integrate with UE editor.
Or the default vscode UE wants us to use.

jagged snow
#

Gotcha, yeah

#

I'm strongly considering switching editors to pulsar

night girder
#

I hate it when something that seems so simple, and is logical, doesn't work.

jagged snow
#

I used to absolutely love Atom, I only switched to VSCode when it went away

night girder
#

yeah, they killed it.

jagged snow
#

So I'm considering switching back to pulsar now that vscode keeps getting worse

night girder
#

you know vscodium?

#

it probably also has the AI crap since it just a build of the same IDE without microsoft sauce over it. No telemetry.

As you will no doubt be aware, the plans for development of the outlying regions of the Galaxy require the building of a hyperspatial express route through your star system. And regrettably, your planet is one of those scheduled for demolition. The process will take slightly less than two of your Earth minutes. Thank you."
