payday2 is an interesting case since it's a successor to L4D2 that turned into one of the most bloated games on steam by the number of actual content DLCs
and they just recently asked for subscription πŸ™‚
anyway, it is alive... 13 years later! with decent online that rivals many new games. they kept working on it, despite old engine and many inside troubles.
the thing was that people still were coming in and paying for DLCs. it payed for failed PD3

night girder
#

I did look into it, but you make me unsure again.

#

And this legal jargon is hard on my head atm.

It's not that black and white.

Just don't release in US? And don't hoard useless and private data?

#

I mean, the chance of it getting released is like 0.0001%. It's so much work.

night girder
#

Or that steam does that on our behalve. That whenever a game is sold on steam, it takes it's cut, then pays taxes for the country, then send whatever is left to developer.

#

Have a couple games listed on Steam - all sales have tax withheld in accordance with the locality in which the game is purchased.

#

But I still might need to pay income tax.

At least in US, steam handles sales tax but the business must still handle taxeson on income

night girder

exactly, same here. Income vs sale taxes. Two different things.

I got a weird problem. Whenever I open AMD overlay, to monitor my FPS. I get coilwhine.

#

As if, the overlay itself, pushes the GPU to 100%. Which is super weird.

#

And I know some might think I am crazy. But I read topics from people with the same issue.

#

I have instant replay off though. It's really puzzling. But overlay pushes my GPU to 100%.

#

So whenever I want to see, how much is my GPU using in this game, and I open overlay, 100% -> coilwhines like hell.

twin dew
#

Part of the Windows windowed mode optimizations.
Allows different windows and overlays to render at different rates, and then just the latest versions get merged together by the GPU just before final combined frame is sent out for display.
And seems that the AMD Overlay isn't acting sane and just updating each time the content changes.

night girder
#

That could maybe explain it.

twin dew
#

Or have you set V-Sync to be always off in AMD Settings in general?
And not just when program doesn't specify?

night girder
#

I haven't done anything. DDU 3x yesterday remember.

#

So default as it gets. The only setting I disabled was this one:

twin dew
#

And I forgot that the AMD Overlay doesn't do "every X" but actually changes every displayed frame at minimum, as the "Frame Rate" changes that fast, and it isn't averaged in any way.

#

Yeah, was about this one under Gaming, Graphics:

night girder
#

That's off by default?

twin dew
#

Where people keep setting that Always Off for some reason or another.

#

And breaking stuff.

night girder
#

That's default.

twin dew
#

Yup.

night girder
#

So I need to turn that to always on?

twin dew
#

on unless specifies is the next "safe" setting.

#

But no idea if there would be change in this.

night girder
#

I also turned it from 0.25 to 1 second to see if that helped. Nop.

thin trout
#

Just use hwinfo

#

AMD overlay is awful

night girder
#

Yeah, apparantly. I never noticed this on my previous one.

#

Because it was always whining like a baby. But now it's a bit quieter, but the moment I open overlay, I can heard to coilwhine sneak up.

#

So the pink line, the rise and fall, is my tabbing into my game.

#

the green rise is me opening and closing overlay

#

So it goes from about 80% utilization to about 90% just for a silly overlay?

#

I though, maybe AMD overlay is using more sensors inside the GPU, those get power, creating coilwhine.

#

Because this one is also new to me. So maybe different sensors?

#

Another example.

#

The bump is just opening amd overlay with 4 stats 🀣

mental oriole
#

Let's draw with a billion fps hehe

twin dew
#

But is it the same coil whine as before?
Or just "normal" coil whine?

#

Because GPU at full tilt getting the normal "mostly static constant" coil whine is way too common thing.
Just effect of the coils construction.

#

Some specific GPU designs with the exact parts have higher likelyhood of it happening, some have lesser.
From the selected coil, and the exact VRM implementation otherwise.
But lot is also up to exact coil units installed, as part of the manufacturing variance for the coils.

wanton orchid
#

and likely psu response I believe
(which will not remove it but can make it more or less obvious)

#

9070xt is tuned to burst if possible
at 7800fps high load it burst crazy and screech loud

#

both from gc and psu

night girder
#

If I put everything to background, including UE5, ticks stop.

#

UE5 just pushes GPU to 100% the whole time.

#

This peak is 96-100% and happens when I tab to UE5 editor.

#

The peak going down is me tabbing out of UE5 editor to discord.

#

And yes, both GPU and PSU are ticking.
So maybe the culprit is Assrock motherboard.

#

And I kid you not, I went to YT yesterday looking for videos to listen to what "normal" coilwhine sounds like.

wanton orchid
#

no motherboard
simply gpu bursting each frame

night girder
#

But euhm, that didn't help me at all 🀣

night girder
wanton orchid
#

it'll tick faster at higher fps

twin dew
#

Coil whine is a high pitched sorta whistling noise than can be produced by electronics, particularly electromagnetic coils when current is passed through them.
And there are various videos and/or sound clips of that.

night girder
#

Well the previous ticked and system crashed.

#

New one ticks. Only matter of time before my system crashes.

#

Replaced PSU. Took out RAM sticks.

#

I did everything I can here. All I can replace at this point is motherboard and case.

night girder
twin dew
#

Didn't try to find good one yet.

night girder
#

Like the recording devices itself, changes the sound.

#

and good luck finding coilwhine for a 9070 XT with good audio quality.

wanton orchid
#

tick are normal depending on load
as long as it's psu gpu your other components are fine

twin dew
#

Main point is that it usually is pretty constant high frequency whine.

#

Where the actual load then can change the pitch.

night girder
#

So either everyone is wrong, or you are.

twin dew
#

Depends on the interval, I understood in your case it to be significant, as in max few ticks per second.

#

Or less often than that.

wanton orchid
#

People have either bad hears, limited power models, and or more insulated pc case

night girder
#

Stuff like that. And it wasn't only Dredgen.

wanton orchid
#

double check they are not forwarding your question to chatgpt

night girder
#

I trust Dredgen.

#

And Baldur also said the ticking wasn't normal.

wanton orchid
#

Anyway
gtx1080ti ftw3 evga would tick too

night girder
#

I even made an audio recording.

wanton orchid
#

it's burst related

night girder
#

Yeah, I don't know πŸ™ I just want stable system.

wanton orchid
#

I hinted to check if it's directly linked with frame rate

#

if it is not there you have problems

twin dew
#

And AsRock doesn't seem to have option to force PCIe power saving things off in their BIOS...

night girder
#

I provided the information.

#

If I open a game, put it in the tray*. Then open UE5 editor. I start to hear ticking.

#

If I open a game, play the game, no ticking.

wanton orchid
#

background will reduce fps

night girder
#

frames are locked to 120 inside UE5 editor.

wanton orchid
#

if it's a heavy game

night girder
#

And I posted what happens to GPU utilization, it goes to 100%.

wanton orchid
#

not the editor

night girder
#

It's the editor making the GPU tick, or it puts some sort of load to provoke it.

twin dew
#

Have you crashed with the new GPU yet?

night girder
#

No, but I did turn of my system yesterday evening. Because I just didn't want to know if it crashes or not. I wanted to have a good night sleep.

wanton orchid
night girder
#

Only started to stress test system an hour ago.

wanton orchid
#

does it do the same without background game

night girder
#

Stress test = my specific setup of software that made the system crash after 10 minutes.

#

But remember Baldur, my previous system/GPU was also """stable""" at the beginning and just degraded. And that's what worries me atm.

night girder
twin dew
#

All electronics degrade while powered.
Question is if there is enough margin for that to matter or not during the time it is actually used, before being scrapped for other reasons.

night girder
#

This is with game in background.

twin dew
#

And like I have said, some GPUs are manufactured "faulty" without enough margin.

night girder
#

This is load of game itself in background. CPU, RAM, UP/DOWN and GPU usage.

twin dew
#

Same for other components.

wanton orchid
#

tldr: some ticks are normal
it degrading hardware is not
it may still be your old components were simply too weak to it

night girder
#

But for some weird reason.

#

If I use that game AND I open UE5. It goes poof.

#

If I just open UE5 it takes a few hours mostly to crash.

twin dew
#

That was just with the old GPU?
Or with the new too?

night girder
#

Old GPU.

#

Still testing with new GPU.

#

point I am trying to make, it's not because it doesn't crash in an hour. I am out of the woods yet. The ticking I heard on old GPU + old PSU/ AND new PSU. Is back.

#

and I was 99% sure ticking was related to crash, because on old GPU, it started with "quiet" ticking and went worse and worse untill it crashed.

twin dew
#

Point is, don't panic just because of sound, if you don't have issues right now.
Need to see if you are in the clear or not basically.
The expectation about the old CPU was that it died to VSOC debacle overvoltage, as you hadn't updated your BIOS originally IIRC.
And isn't related to current issues.
Which are just bad luck to get something else that was basically broken from factory.
Two separate issues.

night girder
#

But I told you yesterday.

#

I can send the GPU back in theory. And get my money back. If it doesn't fix it.

#

But anyway, you right, I leave it running and see what happens.

#

One last thing, FU AMD for tripping me over the drivers. πŸ–•
And ty Baldur for knowing wtf was going on 🀣

twin dew
#

He got hit by the RDNA1/2 and RDNA3/4 driver split.

#

With RDNA2 IGP and RDNA4 dGPU.

night girder
#

If you search for drivers for 9070 you get this.

#

You have to click release notes.

#

Read the fine details to find out there is a fucking 3rd driver option.

#

It should be on the front of this page 😠

twin dew
#

Yeah, with GPU, you get the RDNA4 drivers, with CPU, you get the RDNA2 drivers.
And the combined package is basically hidden into middle of the release notes.

#

Been same for years with AMD.
With the previous driver splits.

night girder
#

It's bad communication from AMD imo.

#

I don't think I am to blame. I read what they say. ANd they make it over complicated and NOT transparant.

#

Who goes to the release notes, to discover there is a 3rd driver option if you don't see it under drivers and software?

twin dew
#

Yeah, it is horrible.
And even the pre-link text (that next line) is just bad.

night girder
#

AND the auto detect, didn't even fucking detect my iGPU? Which one would expect to be the outcame.

#

"Oh, your iGPU is RDNA 2, let me fetch a driver for that."
"Oh, your dedicated GPU is RDNA 5, let me fetch a driver for that."

twin dew
#

Probably only coded to check until it finds first AMD GPU.

night girder
#

but instead, it just sets things up for my dedicated and ignored my iGPU.

#

Man, you really need a lot of experience with AMD products to get to know all their shenanigans.

twin dew
#

And at least at one point, if you installed first drivers for one GPU, then other, the first installed driver would get overwritten completely by the second install.
AFAIK same with Nvidia, if you have both legacy and "modern" driver set stuff in same system.
But at least for them the legacy is so old you can just use the WU drivers and not care.

night girder
#

Also, don't upgrade to 25.11.1.

#

Adrenaline crashes for everything you change. I disable GPU acceleration in discord. Adrenaline dissapears.

#

Well it's the least of my troubles, but kind annoying that Adrenalin keeps disappearing randomly 🀣

twin dew
#

Worst was when I tried to get HD4350 and Vega IGP to work in same system...
That was impossible, as the drivers overwrote each other.
Needed to switch that HD4350 to HD7750, as the HD7750 and Vega drivers didn't overwrite each other.
Where HD4350 was legacy-legacy, HD7750 was legacy, and Vega was current.

#

Where that separate GPU was just for more displays.

night girder
#

Baldur, do you have any 10016 events in eventviewer?

twin dew
#

Yes, possibly because that Profile delete fuckup.
I need to delete my current profile and recreate it at some point.

night girder
#

Here is reddit advice.

twin dew
#

But DistributedCOM source events are normal.

night girder
#

oops wrong one.

twin dew
#

I have specific issue with "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID" etc. Warning.

night girder
#

Yup.

#

I looked up the CLSID.

#

For me it's this one, the application not registering to DCOM.

#

Was looking into it to see if that was the reason adrenalin magically dissapears from tray.

#

I think it's crashing without logging.

twin dew
#

Ok, the secondary has them too, which doesn't have any issues.

#

All have near the end that application container is "Unavailable SID", which explains the erroring basically.
Something causing the resolution of the target to fail in Windows itself, so it cannot find the permissions.

night girder
#

🀨

#

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{2593F8B9-4EAF-457C-B68A-50F6B8EA6B54} <--- THIS IS THE ONE I AM SPEAKING OFF.
and APPID
{15C20B67-12E7-4BB6-92BB-7AFF07997402}
to the user X from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

twin dew
#

Yeah, but those first tell the source of the COM request, and the end tells the target.
And the source has valid information, target doesn't.

#

So the COM service fails the request, as it cannot find permission line that allows the source to make RPC request to the target, as the target resolved is invalid.

#

I have bunch of different sources.

#

And all have that Unavailable SID as the target in the warnings.

#

And then couple for Spotify as the target.

#

That was resolved.

night girder
#

I am not crazy!

#

AMD fucked it up it seems. Niiice.

#

But what we did get is AI.

#

This is making my ears steam. We got fucking AI everywhere in adrenaline.

#

And drivers that are garbage. Nice priorities.

#

And this is all in Adrenaline. The ad, you can't get rid off.

#

Well, enough ranting for one day. But I am done with AMD. Never again. Gave em 4 chances. 2CPU's and 2GPU's.

#

at this point, I think I have a right to say my AMD experience is shit and I wont recommend it to people.

twin dew
#

Yeah, the splitting of RDNA1/2 from RDNA3/4 to different installers was completely insane, even if they wanted to split the code branches and have two different actual driver sets.

night girder
#

And 25.11.1 adrenaline just crashing out of the blue. And the overlay pushing GPU to 100%. And AI which nobody asked for. And high coilwhine because of the components they use.
Do you save money? Yes. But for all the money you save, you get years of headache 🀣

twin dew
#

Component selection is on the specific card maker for that model.

night girder
#

All I read is that AMD cards make more coilwhine. Designed. Or not designed, but regarding the components they use and the price they target for.

#

There is one more mystery to me. Yesterday I was reading a topic about someone having hard coilwhine, but they claimed that over the weeks. It dissapeared.

#

Now I am reading another topic, also claiming some sort.

#

And I was a technician back in the day at an automobile sound system company. What opens up virgin coils like a champ? Sustained heat and current.

So I got to work. I installed everything from 3dmark 03/06 to firestrike extreme (because I wanted tthe card to sing every frequency it can) and benchmarked.** For 24 hours straight. And this morning, I found out I no longer have coil whine in windows applications.** For games, it's still there. But noticeably better.

So I suggest everyone having coil whine issues to at least give this a try.

twin dew
#

Possible.
As the coil whine is from the coil wire in the coil vibrating and rubbing in the coils, from changes in amperage throught the coil.
So if the wire changes positions etc. the sound can change or disappear.

#

As the amperage changes change the magnetic field, and that changing magnetic field causes forces.

night girder
#

People seem to be pretty sure. Wonder if it's actually true.

twin dew
#

And also why only true solution to coil whine would be to do the coil winding as wet process with epoxy, to glue all the coil wire in position.
You can try to tune the general VRM behavior and the exact coils used together to try to push the frequency above human hearing etc.

night girder
#

Cool. Well, I am not messing with it. Think that's wisest atm.

twin dew
#

Cannot be glued after the fact.
Or tuned by user either.

night girder
#

All I did was enable vsync, because 100% GPU when landing on menu's in games is horrible 🀣

night girder
visual tree
#

Google updated Street View here. Time do to some online sightseeing of my city πŸ˜„

sharp matrix
#

I don't know whats worse Nvidia or Amd, well at least my nvidia drivers mostly work for the most of the time, so I guess Nvidia even though its literally swimming in AI bullshit also, at least driver wise seems to mostly be ok.

#

But really prioritizing AI over usable driver, yeah this is garbage indeedπŸ™‚

night girder
sharp matrix
night girder
#

Mhm, let's rephrase.

#

I not promoting to get AMD hehe If someone would ask.

#

Like I said, I gave AMD money for two CPU's and two GPU's. In two years?

night girder
#

And another problem. Now blender doesn't work.

#

And I think this one also points towards AMD drivers fucking about.

#

9070 XT, drivers from this month, but no openGL 4.3 or higher? Yeah ...

twin dew
#

Should be 4.6 installed...

#

As in OpenGL driver supporting OpenGL 4.6.

night girder
#

what?

#

fuck my live. fuck you AMD.

twin dew
# night girder what?

That is the OpenGL driver version that your PMs yesterday showed, while the driver install problems were ongoing.

night girder
#

So my integrated has it.

#

but my dediccated doesn't?

#

These screenshots are directly from Adrenaline.

#

After I did what you said, the dual driver thing for RDNA2/4. After I did a DDU.

twin dew
#

Yeah, the previous set had one for both...

#

Before that...

night girder
#

So I am fucked? And can't run blender on a 600 euro GPU?

#

but can run it on a iGPU from a processor that is 200 euro.

twin dew
#

Try running that installer again, without DDU etc.

#

Just running it again.

night girder
#

install drivers of my drivers?

#

and what driver did you want me to run again?

#

Minimal? The normal one. Or the dual 1.6GB one?

twin dew
#

Basically reinstalling whatever version you currently have over itself, without clean install or like.

#

The dual version.

twin dew
#

I have had few times over the years when AMD driver installer has failed to install OpenGL driver, and rerunning the installer helped each time.

night girder
#

well the moment of truth.

#

Hole fucking shit 🀣 What the f is this mess.

#

2 days ago I though, tomorrow I'll just do a DDU, install drivers, slap in a new GPU and go. Two days later I am still hitting issues.

#

the iGPU still has an older version, but I think that's normal.

twin dew
#

Yeah, different driver versions now, for all the drivers. but that is to be expected.

night girder
#

But like, after you do a DDU.

#

One would think they are starting from a clean slate right?

#

How can it not install a driver?

#

Or you think windows might be fucking with it?

ivory rampart
#

windows is 100% grabing drivers

night girder
#

I disabled it normally. On gpedit level.

twin dew
#

Like I said, some kind of long-term AMD driver installer issue, never checked the installer logs to see what might have gone wrong.

#

Need to do that if I get hit again at some point.

night girder
#

And turned that off.

sharp matrix
#

dear lord when did amd driver installer turn into such a hot mess

night girder
#

I realise how lucky I was with the drivers on the 6950XT 🀣

#

but unlucky on the hardware department. They just worked out of the box and barely had issues with the drivers itself.

#

Oh wait. AMD dissapeared again from the tray 🀣 Let's manual reboot it.

#

Ah, resurrected. The fuck. Why does it keep dissapearing.

#

and if only I had some sort of logging or something to go on.

twin dew
#

Disappearing, or just going into the hidden icons part?

night girder
#

No, I have AMD set to always show on my tray.

#

And it just dissapears totally. Not under the ^ either.

#

and as in the reddit post mentioned, nothing in the event log either.

#

For a moment I though it was related to:

The server Windows.Gaming.GameBar.PresenceServer.Internal.PresenceWriter did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

night girder
#

Yeah, no it's dissapearing 🀣

soft bloom
night girder
#

I got a few theories.

soft bloom
# soft bloom

findling around, I hear some cracking sounds in right ear while left s stable.
but it doesn't seem like just pressing copper-cable-with-white-core on itself makes that or bring full sound back, nor does trying differnt positions with black cable, nor does mushing together the copper mess
I am really puzzled

#

is it a good idea to cut these and see if burning well remove some kind of coating?..

night girder
#

Can soldering help?

twin dew
#

Would need to first clean up enough to get actually protected wires on both ends, then solder the right ones back together, and then insulate them all.

#

He currently has just a mess of shorts and disconnects.

soft bloom
#

burned that black cable - yep, actual wire inside completely broken

twin dew
#

Ground, left output, right output and mic.

soft bloom
#

the other one somehopw has thin copper inside that thing white coating that was under copper 'shield'

soft bloom
#

left outout and 'left' ground seem to be good

twin dew
#

Depends on the set.
If it split earlier, then you get ground and channel to the other side.
And then ground, channel and mic to the side with mic.

#

And usually the ground is around the other conductors as shield at same time.

#

So you would have insulator, ground and then two or three insulated smaller conductors inside the ground weave.

soft bloom
#

(comparing to another headphones, where ears are connected with an arch, in these earphones left ear is stable, while those headphones there's a problem at minijack where slight twists can shift sound between ears, almost like a dial)

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Yes.

#

Basically good quality audio cables have the ground as weave around all the other conductors, which then have their own insulation layers.
Bad ones just have each as separate normal conductor.

#

And then there might be fiber pull string inside, to handle some of the physical forces.

#

cloth fiber or like I mean.

soft bloom
#

what I don't get is why there's one cable with it's own tight copper threads shell

twin dew
#

Might be that mic.
Separate ground from the split for it.

#

To not get noice from the audio output on the mic line.

night girder
#

instead off bunching with the tiny copper cables themselves. But I wouldn't fuck with it and just buy new.

twin dew
night girder
#

πŸ™„

soft bloom
# soft bloom

you can kinda see the helix on that copper cable that is third on the bottom

twin dew
#

But basically would need to cut the whole bad section out, and then restrip for repair.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Trying to do anything with that mess is just lost, as there are shorts near and possibly under that remaining outer insulator at both ends.

twin dew
#

Basically would need to cut somewhere over here.
The stuff nearer is just a mess.
Or at least strip the outer insulator off to that position and have better look.

soft bloom
#

every time I try to cut more of insulator I damage that copper shielding, little threads falling off

twin dew
#

Then you are doing that stripping wrong.

soft bloom
#

or might be dull blade?

#

hoenstly, idk how to do it best in this case, since rubber stretches a lot

twin dew
#

Any cut to that outer insulator from the outside with tool must not end up actually through it, so it contacts the copper.

soft bloom
#

hehe, I wish I could do that

twin dew
#

Cut most of that broken insulator away.
Then make cable direction short cut opposite side of the opened part.
Then pull the two strips apart, until the cuts go far enough.
Then cut the excess inside out, or with wire stripper or like, one side at a time.

#

Repeat if necessary to get far enough, if one side breaks off.

soft bloom
#

opposite side of the opened part.
that I didn't understand.
the first part seems like cutting parallel to cable.
but getting through is the hard part

twin dew
#

I mean that you have protruding stub of insulator, where there is already one cut from the failure, in the right side of the pic, where the stuff has come out.
You make second cut on the opposite side, so you get two opposite side stubs of about same width.

#

And then you pull those apart from each other, so the cuts progress onwards.

#

And you can help that by making shallow cuts on the insulator, even tiny bit helps a lot, not even to half of the insulators depth is needed or suggested.

#

And just visible intendation is often enough to guide.

soft bloom
#

hmmm, I will it a go a bit later

#

the goal is to get enough pristine inside to twist damaged cables back together, right?

#

there's like 1cm out on each side atm

twin dew
#

Basically need some undamaged portion of all the inside conductor insulators visible, on both ends, as the first step.
With the surrounding ground pushed to one side in controller manner.

#

or grounds, if that mic conductor has its own ground and internal conductor too.

soft bloom
#

yeah I don't get why they allow grounds to touch hehe, seems questionable

twin dew
#

But basically you need to find where the insulator damage ends.

soft bloom

soft bloom
# twin dew The smaller conductor insulators.

oh, they are likely just good
the copper inside one of them broke (black cable, likely for right channel - after burning insulator it just went appart with nothing holding it unlike white cable likely for mic)
and copper shielding ground broke

twin dew
soft bloom
#

that whole section is near junction. whenright ear stopped workin, I noticed terrible twist with almost 90degree bent... it twists a lot somehow despite frequent untwisting, but looks like it worn down

twin dew
#

So you need to strip that outermost insulator, until you have the inner insulators actually visible, to point where they don't have damage.

soft bloom
# twin dew Point is, you don't have visible insulators for any of the conductors, outside t...

hmm, just to verify
left side is in it's own twist and working, so I basically don't think of it
the right side has copper obviously broken
black cable we talked about
and mic channel with copper helix, white coating inside, and intact copper thread at the core
what am I not accounting for here? I mean, I am not sure when do you suggest to stop aka what I should see and be like "aha, no more outer insulator cutting"

twin dew
#

And none of the copper matters, if you cannot reinsulate them from each other.
Which requires to have enough of all the insulators visible, intact insulators.

#

Which requires you to strip back on that larger outer insulator past the damaged section.

#

Basic idea with normal coaxial cable, but you don't want to cut any of the copper at this point.

#

All layers need to be visible and the concentric insulators need to be cut at different levels.

#

But don't cut any of the copper. Edited previous too.

#

You need around 5mm of each insulator visible to put any kind of tape or like around it and the conductor, without gaps in the new insulation.

#

So, if I remember correctly,
Images/videos data, for display, is mostly encoded as rgb value for every pixel, with various precision for each r g b values, and ofcourse various resolution. And this is the foundation of how video signal is transmissed. Various optimizations on how to comrpess that data, especially for streaming, don't chang| that in the end it's rpesented like this.
And thus, software or hardware that captures image data has to work with rectangualr grid and record intensity for 3 colors. While hardware for display has to decode these to whatever created image for viewing. Be it lcd, cathode ray tube, or various projectors.
And basis for this was that essntially eyes have 3 color cones, and thus we can just encode information of how much each is stimulated, essentially tuning the way data is stored specifically for humn eyes (well, most common one at least).
Which is infinitely less complex then recording spectrogram at each tiny area where light hits. But at the same time, that's a data loss we agreed to ignore. Not even accounting for polarization nuances. And buggest elephant in the room is that when we llook with our eyes in any 'scene', we focus only a tiny bit of overall fov, everything else is not perceived, and even just moving eyeballs around changes how light falls on retina. Eyes focus light, some get scattered.
But when ee project image, add some loght emmision, after it got focused with a camera lens, we do that focusing yet again...
Choosing what is focused on image is a restriction that changes perception. After already restrciting fov to some rectangle. And only encoding data of some 3 color intensities. And erasing any polarization data. And ignoring for the most part, excistance of 4th cone (i know it's not a cone i forgot a word).
And in the end, qustion - why does it even work?

# soft bloom So, if I remember correctly, Images/videos data, for display, is mostly encoded...

Well, for most photo cameras, yes. Because their job is to capture what humans perceive.
The fourth type of light receptor in the eye iirc only registers light intensity - something that you don't need an extra sensor for in a camera.

For stuff like space telescopes however, no.
Those have a specific range of wavelengths they take pictures of which is mapped to the humanly perceivable range of wavelengths for publication.

It's a trade-off for sure, but the same old tale of "good enough is good enough".
It's just not worth it to include infrared or ultraviolet spectrum in a photo if all you want is to show other humans what it looks like

soft bloom
# dire igloo Well, for most photo cameras, yes. Because their job is to capture what humans p...

Heh, wasn't even talking about limitations of spectrum, more about how digital cameras try to crop spectral information with, ideally, how much each cone should be stimulated.
Yep, 4th cone is probably (unsure) getting same stimulus from just emmiting 3 colors back from lcd...
I am just saying how different viewing even actively lot image (screen) is from being in a scene. Especially with double-focusing 'dance' (frist on film/sensor and then on retina).

#

I didn't fully give up on headphones though, too curious about how to make thatwrk but having continuity test fail on naked copper wires makes me question if my assumptions are right

soft bloom
# dire igloo Well, for most photo cameras, yes. Because their job is to capture what humans p...

I have visual snow thing
Being in a dark room is not a vomplete black, but an ever changing noise sorr of like what you see on a phone with high iso in dark scene... Except different.
When those not-cones are activated before I can detect color it feels quite different from noting slight chnages in color.
I remember for sure that they are more sensitive in darker settings, when 3 color cones get almost no activation. Which means that eith lcd you can't imitate that level of darkness?.. that's speculation cause you could imagine that very low rgb values might give smae effect, but then it breaks the basis upon which rgb was built and implemented for.

#

Hehe, there's always a rolleccoaster of "wtf is that? Need to study details" - "i understand how this works with this model and nuances don't matter"

The place of "good enough" always shifts with how much your now.
Easy example is fps mania. Hoe people where fine with 24 for decades, then we got 30, then came 60, and at some point everyone wnated 90 120 144, 240, 360, 500...
"Good enough" shifted from 30 to what 120 now?
So yeah, it's just a question of time when we will be looking back at rgb entirely thinking "meh how could we look at this at all" and others will be nostalgic implementing rgb limitations into whatever comes next.

twin dew
#

Very unlikely that it will change.
As that would need overhauling every level of the stack from displays to software.
We have just kept widening the color gamut and bit depth.

soft bloom
soft bloom
twin dew
#

For using specific wavelengths.

#

With 3 colors for most common, then some exceptional ones with more.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Yes, but point is that for such move to take place, there needs to be huge reason for it to make it.

soft bloom
#

Oh we probably find it

twin dew
#

Being able to display few hues accurately in common usage that current three-color solution cannot just isn't one.

#

Need something else, that just includes also change in the color solution.

soft bloom
# soft bloom Oh we probably find it

As soon as some big investor finds new tech there will be every second tiktok talking about how this new technology is so much cooler then rgb, life altering, so fresh, completely changes what you feel etc.

soft bloom
#

Well, if holograms could develop into full color, being to change perspective without wearing vr goggles would be a worthwhile upgrade

#

Even if not for most cases though

#

But media... websites do utilize vide range of mediums from plain text to audio and video.
Comouters grew from text terminals to multi-media stations

#

Inagine Tenet but where you can change perspective slightly and find a couple clues in every scenes upping require$ rewatch count from 5 to 20? πŸ™‚

twin dew
#

Also, to go to more "accurate" over RGB, it would almost certainly need that the whatever the new thing is, that it wouldn't cost significantly more to add more.
If you still needed per color components, that almost certainly will not happen even if there is major change in display tech.
And even if it wouldn't, if the spec committee doesn't contain right people to push for that, it might not get in just because of inertia.

soft bloom
soft bloom
dire igloo
soft bloom
#

And as for ai... Yeah, we know how far they can be

twin dew
#

And when to get benefit, you need the whole chain from capture, to processing, to display to be of the new tech, which would currently be more expensive even without "much smaller production runs", as there would need to be more stuff.
And that benefit would be tiny for most use.

dire igloo
#

Because both spec committee members and AI-obsessed CEOs will decide on stuff they most often don't know well enough to make decisions without external input

twin dew
#

So camera sensors, camera processing, storage, OS, image processing stages, GPUs/image output, all parts of monitors etc.

dire igloo
twin dew
dire igloo
#

So for a new technology to be adapted, you have to allow for gradual change - or force a sudden one

soft bloom
#

To sell benefit from upgrdaing iphone is not a problem,
Same with making anime-style of nay picture you took or able to write below-averge code...
Selling benefit to people is the least of my concerns, hehe.

twin dew
#

But basically would need sudden change, all layers at same time, otherwise there would be no benefit, only negatives from having part of the chain in new "more accurate multicolored" thing.

dire igloo
#

I'm still amazed by the abundance of HDMI in consumer tech compared to Displayport

twin dew
#

Not that it would need to move out suddenly, but all the parts of the chain would need to get support at same time.

#

Scientific imaging already uses lot more channels, but they just get converted into false color for display as needed.

#

As normal RGB.

dire igloo
twin dew
dire igloo
#

And if the "this will look four times better" tech looks barely any different, people will also stick with what they already have

twin dew
#

Yeah, RGB has just issues with some very uncommon hues, and can display even those, just not accurate.
Some purples etc.

#

And those are then also minimized in TV, Cinema etc., basically already checking before use how they look in the actual final recording, and not using the direct human view as the baseline.

#

Same as with black and white sets of past, that often look very weird in color.
As the colors of everything were selected to look good in pure grayscale after recording.

soft bloom
# dire igloo You'd also have to make some form of backwards compatibility. If your cool new c...

Well, if current one is just picking 3 wavelength and their intensity....
Wait, it's kind of is, but that doesn't directly translate to out eyes actually.
Hmmmmmm
You can sample specter at more intervals, that's kind of easy and menas that you just put 'sensors' in addiotion to ones used before. And sorr of rand more channels in the data.
Benefit should be that on supported display you get better color accuracy that doesn't just overlap 3 wavelength but gives you richer spectrum.
That doesn't sound like much, but somehow people are sold on 8 to 10 bit increase so... Will see. (hehe, to be fair, I do like 10 bits, but only because it aas affordable to me)

dire igloo

Basically limited by our tech to capture and emit.

#

And monitors are very sloppy for most part.

#

On that emit part.

dire igloo
#

Yeah, I know, I just don't believe we're using monochromatic tech here

twin dew
#

But basically thighter the better, for both parts.

#

We just cannot do that economically.

dire igloo
#

Would be interesting to use full-spectrum tech that attempts to recreate human perception

twin dew
#

For example the color spikes and overall for some specific high-end Sony OLED:

soft bloom
dire igloo
#

Tho I guess that'd be kinda useless since "this is how a dog sees the world" images aren't particularly interesting in the context of "this is how a human sees the world"

twin dew
#

Then worse tech with just white OLEDs and then phosporus for other colors:

#

In reality blue OLEDs.

#

Some specific CRT:
All colors causing spike outside visible spectrum.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

With our current tech.

#

And AFAIK we don't even have laser emitters for most of those currently.

#

Because there is limited number of atoms/molecules that can be used in laser emitter to get the actual emission with usable power usage and lifetime.

soft bloom

Quantum dots (QDs) or semiconductor nanocrystals are semiconductor particles a few nanometres in size with optical and electronic properties that differ from those of larger particles via quantum mechanical effects. #

Not to be confused to Samsung marketing Quantum Dot displays for most part.
They do often use quantum dots as phosporuses, but with not that good quality control, so the actual spread is much larger.

#

Samsung Quantum Dot LCD
Blue with direct backlight, other two with quantum dot based phosphorus.

#

Samsung QLED Q9, year model not specified.

#

Also, actual Q(uantum) LED is QDOT type thing that is actually the original emitter, Samsung marketing just stole the name for different thing.

soft bloom
#

Hm, dynamically changing emmition pick could be a cool optimization

twin dew
#

But not doable with known realistic tech.
As all depend on combination of exact material and in some cases on those nanometer scale dimensions on top.

#

For that spectrophotometer used to measure those display output spectrum, those have one sensor that reacts to whole spectrum, and then shitton of different filters, one for every 3.3nm of spectrum it can measure in that i1 Pro:s case.
And the combination is then calibrated with known samples, individually per device.

soft bloom
#

Btw, integral imaging - exists

twin dew
#

Just adds extra lenslet array to normal sensor or display.

#

No change in how color capture or reproduction is handled.

soft bloom
#

Yes, doesn't help color.

#

I was just pondering about light field capturing, and asked gpt what can it associates with the topic

#

So integral imaging is new to me

twin dew
#

And I would expect that the displays would need the eyes to be at exactly right positions compared to the display for that to work properly.

soft bloom
#

And if it's possible to capture lightfoeld of many wavelength samples , that's woud be pretty much indistinguishable from real experience

night girder

I was thinking if it's possible, to use my reset button on my case, to turn on/off RGB.

#

also there is open source alternative for RGB, better than iCUE imo.

night girder
#

openrgb has plugin for that.

#

but hey, if you want to use iCUE use it, I don't think I am goign to change your mind anyway πŸ˜„

Look, a "floating" case πŸ˜›

Now that I have an option for 1 gbit connection, I should try geforce now πŸ˜€

My strategy: use rtx 3060 ti for games which can run it on 60 fps and use geforce now for more demanding games

Also, the brand name is "cougar" hehe which in the american language, means something else.

Germans would say: "Oh great, another dust collector!"

night girder

I think Cougar also means pretty women of certain ages.

visual tree
#

A lot of european languages call it puma i think

#

Instead of cougar

night girder
#

The cougar, also called puma, mountain lion, catamount, and panther, is a large small cat native to the Americas.

#

Fucking US.

#

They gave it 5 names!

visual tree
night girder
#

large small cat.. wtf is a large SMALL cat.

#

or is it a small large cat?

#

or maybe a medium large small cat?

#

I only know Puma mostly of the brand. I think I would call it a panther. I never heard of a catamount, I did hear of mountain lions, but I though it were just lions living in the mountain. And Cougar I only one two definitions off. And large small cat is bullshit.

What's the point of training people abroad?

#

Not that you can summon them on a whim anyway if shit hits the fan.

languid gulch
#

also why would you require the flight without paying for it

visual tree
night girder
#

If a country gets attacked, most likely everyone will avoid the airspace asap. So nobody can just "fly in" to help.

#

So if you have 10K people trained and ready as reservist, living all over the world, it's useless. I think?

languid gulch
#

ngl i'd gladly take some crappy bones if it meant undoing nerve damage

visual tree

They must be insane if they think someone who has a job in US is going to pay flight tickets to Croatia only to serve 4 months in military and return back to USA only to realize they have been fired

night girder

And it makes no fucking sense!

visual tree
#

Nothing here makes sense lol

night girder

You literally training people, that go back to another country. They can defend the US more likely than Croatia itself 🀣

They made a dumb law that all 18 year old citizens of Croatia must serve military even if they don't live in Croatia

night girder

Amazing. (it's mostly the last part that strikes me odd)

visual tree
#

If you live in the north pole, guess you have to return back or else you will be fined lol 🀣

night girder

Also, you might not get back into some countries 🀣

I read South Korea is very strict regarding military service and they might void your passport if you try to avoid it

night girder

yeah, and a few other countries.

visual tree

Edit: they will put you in jail for 1-5 years if you travel abroad on purpose to avoid service πŸ’€

night girder
#

I thunk Ukraine is also strict.

#

Here they introduced it volontarely. Everyone between 16-18 will get invitation* to spend their summer in a military training camp.
A mix between training but at the level of young ones. So not too harsh I assume? It's a very soft way of attempting to warm up people to the idea of a carreer in the army.

A bit like a summer camp sprinkled with military

visual tree
#

At least the fans are cheap

#

Even I despise salespeople in my company hehe

#

My biggest pet peeve is when the competitor calls their cable infrastructure fiber because it's hybrid fiber coaxial

I think some US ISP was fined for exactly that because they advertised cable as fiber. @languid gulch might remember

that does sound familiar

i think some also got nailed for pulling a volkswagen and renting time on someone else's fiber when diagnostics were being run

visual tree

Oh, It might have been comcast although they advertised their network as "10G" which is a theoretical limit not applicable in reality

In reality, you will probably get 1 Gbit per second since you share bandwidth with neighbors but the salesmen omitted that part on purpose

MS had told devs to not put config/cache data into program install directory for 10 years when Vista came about and made programs unable to touch that without admin rights, forcing that.
Making Vista and UAC have bad name.

#

Then C:\ProgramData for system wide program data, AppData for user specific program data, with that split between Roaming and Local, where Roaming data should be minimized and only include configs that make sense to move between computers automatically with user in domain environment.

twin dew

Saves, configs, caches etc.

As usual, as Intel has to pay the devs, and more likely the person would be to buy the game directly, harder it is for Intel to get good deal with the dev.

And if it is the list I found, then it is stuff that lot of people would like, and not cheap for Intel:
Battlefield 6, Dying Light: The Beast, Assassins Creed: Shadows or Civilization 7.

it's not investing in gaming, it's investing in another route for money laundering to go through

i'm wondering if the AI bubble popping will take a whole bunch of non-AI stuff with it

i guess at this point it should be "how much non-AI stuff will the AI bubble pop take with it"
