I remember now, it was steam cloud thing. I forgot what game, but it was uploading pretty giant saves to the cloud (multiple) and it could take a while.
At that time, the game in steam remained "running". Not sure if that helps.
Yeah, for a lot of games that have even remotely large save files I just disable steam sync
And I run periodic backups to my nas
I would love for steam to have the ability to replace the automatic cloud sync with an automatic sync to a drive of your choosing
7200 is about as fast, yeah. But 7200c34 RAM is simply better than 6000 30. It's timing equivelant to ~6000 cl28, but also rated for higher speeds. The worst case is that you input about 5 settings and it's functionally equivelant to a 6000cl28 kit.
It's also often cheaper at the moment because most buyers don't know that it's strictly better, a lot are thinking it's 7200 so it doesn't "fit" and would be a bad kit.
I've sat through enough advice sessions that "input about 5 settings" is too much to be considered "set and forget"
yes but they're written on the front of the box 😄
and nicely lined up on the first page of the bios
open BIOS, go to OC, enable memory profile, save and exit, done
Any more than that is too much to be telling people
yep
anything more than XMP is beyond set and forget
you can literally do that though
Just if you care about exactly what your RAM is doing, you can easily tell it to do whatever you want
That "if" doesn't apply to those advisees tho.
They want best performance, set and forget.
So they use auto overclock profile and leave it at that. What's the problem?
I could do that.
But I'm far from able to help others with it
That was my question.
What's the best choice for set and forget?
then its not a valid answer
for something that works on every board and configuration you have to go down to about ddr5-4000
if its anything more than check the box and forget its not idiot proof
yeah, just use 6000 is not idiot proof. I help people pretty much every day asking why their 6000 isn't working, and it's usually because they did those dumb mistakes.
like, they don't understand the context that 2dpc is different from 1dpc, and 6000 one click OC is only appropriate for 1dpc
i have 6400 and it sucks
if i drop the speed my performance and latency goes to shit
if i leave it my stability goes to shit
ddr5 is just not... good? for the lack of a better word
I want something that's a safe bet recommendation
Excludes 2dpc and barlyvrm
MagicZ moment
wtf is 1dpoasdr is the answer that i want to give you and its the proof your delusional about this
1 DIMM per channel
1 rank per channel
it still means nothing to me when explained like this
Do you know about single channel, dual channel, quad channel?
yea
1dpc means that for every RAM channel on your platform, you use exactly one RAM stick
2dpc means two sticks per channel
so i have 1dpc
5600 for 1dpc 2rpc
3600 for 2dpc anything
Those latter 2 configs are all of the people asking why 6000 isn't working.
They either use 2rpc and have an awful mem controler + bios auto's (often old bios etc), or they have changed the memory configuration to 2dpc and they're trying to use a 6000 profile off of a stick sold in a 1dpc kit.
Ranks are an internal subdivision of the RAM sticks.
For DDR5, that basically means anything up to a 24gb module is single rank, anything high is dual rank.
More ranks means more space for storage chips means higher capacity - but also lower stability
6000 is paradoxically the hardest speed to auto to in some circumstances, because it's the peak speed for auto uclk=memclk, so the peak uclk. If you go up OR down then the uclk drops and uclk-limited configs become more stable.
That's why we get DR kits which are stable at say 5600 or 6800, but not at 6000, under auto UCLK rule.
Most likely yes.
If you have a dual channel CPU with two RAM sticks in the proper slots, yes
i mean i just have the traditional 2 sticks in a 4 slot board it dosent get much more simple than that
and from your explaination seemingly rank 1 chips
Could be a quad channel platform with forced 1dpc but those aren't really a thing in consumer tech
how likely it is to be able to repair wired headphones with right ear off? looks like cable just broke - that tiny thin cable bends too sharp in it's thin rubber cover
For wired headphones, quite likely
it's the side with micrphone.
looks like it had a terrible twist, since copper... I hope, shielding, is completely broken despite taking most of circumference
and there seems to be black cable, that just bends smoothly except in one place where I suspect it broke
and nearby there's a a white cable? but it's really thin, and is covered with copper wires, separately from a bunch of them I talked earlier
I am not sure what's that white core though. this side should carry micrphone and right ear. micrphone didn't work for some time already
My suggestion would be to purchase a replacement cable, open up the headphones, and solder the new cable directly in. I've done that successfully before. If the PCB isn't marked and the cable is still intact enough to do so, test for continuity from the jack to make sure you get the connections correct.
hmmm, continuity is a good test. that copeer mess coming from jack's side doesn't 'ring' to any of 4 contacts
There should be four wires, yes?
well that's the thing, I only can vaguely identify 3
Should be G+L+R+Mic
And they're usually different colors
I would strip the jacketing off an undamaged section of cable
I think I see black and dark-greenish for left side
fo the right there's obvious black, nearly broken white core that has copper strings around. and that copper mess with some traces of red inside (visible on photo
Yeah
I would cut the cable in an undamaged spot, strip the jacket and the four conductors, and identify them
Then open up the headset and solder on a replacement with the same connections
the 'speaker's are a bit tiny to open and solder something on them. but need to figure out a way to clean cable further indeed. rubber is quite elastic, doesn't cut easily
the gauge cut thingy didn't even leave a lasting mark
oh the pain of soldering headset cables
Fiber has finally arrived. Contractors are going to install manhole near the fence and dig trench in my yard 😄
I've been waiting since 1991 🥹
My grid company is digging powerlines underground. They've been working along my commute for a couple of months now. About 10km distance, shuold make power delivery more stable, no small blackouts from snowy trees hitting air lines.
Just as replaced 2kWh of batteris in UPS 😄
Ah, now I understand why you have solar panels 🙂
I am still waiting for solar panel permit from utility company...
Going to install 14 solar panels from Trina Solar (45O W) with optimizers and 5 kW huawei inverter
I have two options.
I buy now. I wait fews days praying for Black Friday Sales.
What you all think? (Last two days, nothing changes on the sales).
So if i put a game into my 360 that ive never played on it before, will it download the update even after end of life or no?
Probably not, as there shouldn't be anything to download it from anymore.
My neighbours are going to be pissed for blocking the road because of fiber cable 😅
I think I will wait one more day maybe, the iGPU is holding on strong. Gaming and UE5 🤣
I am kinda impressed with what it can do in a pinch. I can't use some applications because they crash due the lack in GPU power.
Or they shitty programmed (open source programs like Material Maker struggles).
I mean as long as you don’t crash any performance is enough
Right? 🤣 I am just happy that my system didn't crash for two days haha.
euro problems
im pissed because the city keeps putting bike lanes in peoples driveways and tearing down all the roads everywhere in the process so getting to school is becoming increasingly difficult
the diffrence is that isent a one day inconvinience like you fiber install
At least nobody complained so far. We have a crazy neighbour lady who prevented ISP from installing fiber distribution cabinet because it is ruining her view from the balcony....
She has been quiet recently though because ISP sued her for blocking construction for which city permits were obtained
Btw, contractors are almost finished
Street workers managed to cut the fibre cable of our house two weeks ago
Repaired it on Monday
i love underground cables because technically there more of a hassle here
its literally a game of would you rather
dig out cables in the frozen, rock solid dirt or fix wood poles all winter
Point is that the underground cables shouldn't get damaged by anything other than errant backhoe drivers.
Reason why the stuff is not freely there, but contained in protective layers.
That can take the forces.
Also as for stitches
if they are not dumb it should not be a perfectly straight line
waving can take it way easier
Need slack in the cable for movement.
At least this area, power cables will get dug deep enough that normal winter ground frost wont reach them, 50-100cm or so. So the frost actually protecs them
That too, outside of permafrost areas.
Where you then have the cable inside permanently frozen ground instead, when done right.
Or below that still.
They installed 50mm HDPE pipes for now and fiber cable will be pulled later through the pipes which is the easier part
I started replacing corrugated pipes in the garden where camera cat6 cables run through with HDPE pipes since those pipes are really robust. They are designed to last 50 to 100 years and can withstand mechanical force
In my area we tend to bury internet cables at 1-2m and power cables as low 3m
With typically around .75m to 1m frost depth
Although with a very mild winter it can be as low as .25m but that is very rare
Telco infrastructure is usually 1 meter deep here and cables that go through people's garden is burried 30 or 40 cm deep
Now they just need to run fiber from street distribution cabinet to my attic where splice box will be installed
Also, ISP owns a microtrencher which drastically reduces cost since you don't have to dig large trenches
An example
Basically, a blade cuts small trench and you insert microducts inside a trench
Horizontal directional drill also removes need to open up roads. Or allow going under water areas
Thats how they prepared small river crossing here during sumner. Now they just pull the power line thru the pre installed tube
Oh, you mean this?
ISP uses it to avoid digging roads like you mentioned
30 years ago, I don't think we even had missile bore or microtrenching technology
Yes, but also on larger scale. My friend runs a company and have made some custom parts to their machines.
Basically not digging by side of roads either, just in specific spots and use those for most of the route.
Basically only digging for turns or when max distance is reached.
Sometimes hes taking the "horizontal" to the limits or over, this is 48 degree powerline to bottom of mine 😄
The rusted steel "A" support for the drill was made in our workshop for that project only. Unusual position
Got a new monitor and a new esports jersey
reinvent the rules
decided to officially retire and replace my oculus CV1 instead of trying to save it
Quest 3S is a massive performance step up from it and is $250 rn
sadly they refused to make replacement cables for the CV1, so any replacements i could find were used and at least like $$40-50, with 0 warranty or guarantee it'd work. and idk if that was even the problem, but it'd have to be the first hardware step to fixing it.
so at the end of the day, i'd still have a decade old headset with dead headphones and a disintegrating strap after putting more money into it
Nice, didn't know you were in a esport team.
I've been doing background work with them for a few years now, but I'm not a competitive player.
You might've seen me talk about running twitch streams on my RDNA3 hardware encoder
idk why but i always think that Münster and München are the same city
I'm mainly running their Twitter account and most LoL streams
Mün__e_
yup 🤣
Funnier when people write Münster as Munster
Cuz that's a whole different city
i think it's because for some stupid reason in english we call it Munich, so when we see it in proper german it throws us off
and yea, both have umlauts on the first U
we kinda have a similar issue in the US, where we have the capitol (Washington DC) and the state on the west coast, Washington
Also that pesky country in eastern Europe
Kansas City
my personal recent favorite is Macedonia
Oh I see.
Missouri's state code is MO because Michigan took MI
It was a condition for Greece to recognize North Macedonia as an independent country
Cuz Macedonia is a region that spans into greece
yup, i just love the diplomatic stupidity that happens when formal borders move around
I whish I was there when that discussion happened. Could be a family guy sketch 🤣
Two mayors arguing who can take MI 🤣 Or governors I guess?
Haha 🤣
if i had to guess it was whichever state was older
i do have to say, good luck trying to teach an american wherever Prussia used to be
also we rarely get Baltic & Balkan straight
I once saw a video LONG time ago, where people struggled naming how many states there are etc.
But the equivalent for here would be to ask how many countries there are in the EU 😉
in a blind test i'd 100% miss all the tiny city ones in europe like Andorra
Breaking news: New continent Austria discovered
We used to joke about this in elementary school because people would mix Austria with Australia
"how'd you get to Australia without a passport?"
Austria is so weird for me, the word itself. Because it's not similar to the dutch word.
We call it "Oostenrijk" which is literal "east-empire".
Euh... what?
Australia for example we call Australie.
But it's always a mindfuck to me, Austria... Austria???
yea, i'd say austria is more south of germany than east
well, Austria was a bit bigger back in the days, especially eastwards
I don't know how to bring Fireworker back to life if something happens to him but I at least know how to bring austrian back to life
https://youtube.com/shorts/6hP-v6ZH228
Unless you can revive Fireworker with beer too
Fun fact: guy in the video is from Australia and he moved to Austria
Kinda funny, I think we gave up at some point naming countries.
America - Amerika
Canada - Canada
Australia - Australie
England - Engeland
China - China
I think it has to do with modern countries. Or maybe not 🤔
Why's he calling himself Austrian Kiwi if he's Australian?
ok i need a history lesson for a second
Oh wait, maybe he is from New Zealand
Nah, unlikely.
I'd prefer percussive maintenance (CPR) or turning it off and on again (defibrillator)
Maybe wake up for a philosophical debate. 😉
i understand the Germanic "Frankreich" for France (just throw reich in front of a name of people), but why did Germany decide on Deutschland?
I don't get it either.
If something happens to me, you can revive me with sausage and some italian cheese
Land der Deutschen
Some countries have land other have reich/rijk/empire.
Just make some slightly wrong statements and draw some wildly wrong conclusions, that'll make me wanna correct you
FrankRIJK.
DuitsLAND.
Empire vs country.
Probably same etymology as Netherlands being referred to as Dutch
Zwitserland... Verenigd Koninkrijk (UK).
Nederland.
if Austria ever officially merged with Germany, would it change from Osterreich to Osterland?
It probably has to do with history, some were empires and some were just countries I guess.
But Spain had an empire at one point.
Maybe the countries themselves decided it? 🤣
Also a lot of -ia in English
Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Bosnia, Serbia, Mongolia, etc
And a lot of -stan in the middle east
Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan
i'm wondering if it's an inside vs "outsider" thing. "-land" for germanic, "-reich" for non-german
Probably not cuz Land/Reich has no meanings and the Germans wouldn't want to drop their Deutsch
oi, we already solved that question back in 1848
we decided we didn't want the Austrians
The old name was Germania. Then invaded by the roman empire.
Btw, I found out Letterdief is actually Joost Klein in disguise
Then some guy from Austria decided to make Germany great again
Cuyar, you got me interested now.
in 1848 the US decided that half of mexico was ours 🤣
Because it should be a rijk/empire.
i can only apologize for the fresh new black hole to disappear down 🤣
when are we re uniting the holy roman empire?
EU is an empire 🤣 That's the new holy roman empire.
A lot of Slavic countries have the -land suffix in German:
Estland, Russland, Lettland, Finnland
whenever the pope can get Chicago in on it 😛
its not the holy roman empire if it has the french 😭
It is in modern days
There is no actual correlation
I wouldn't say no correlation so quickly.
Also:
Deutsches Kaiserreich
no, then its just europe
-reich implies a kingdom
-land just a place
not the same thing
More empire afaik.
The correlation that was postulated doesn't exist, at least not in the way that was postulated
i wonder if it's just a cultural thing & not a historical or linguistic thing. make an exception to get the locals to agree to be a part of a new territory without a fight
Officialy it's Federal Republic of Germany.
I would agree for Japan to annex us without a fight
i have ancestry in Alsace Lorraine, so looking up historical information there is always........interesting
We Germans probably didn't like the word "reich" after some Austrian made us famous for it in the 1930s
I was thinking the same, but didn't want to say it haha 🙈
"German-speaking Frenchies, or French-speaking Germans?"
Bundesrepublik Deutschland
I call it Elsass-Lothringen
We at one point had cops and we called them "Rijkswacht" "Guards of the empire". So Belgium was an empire at one point
that, but also with germany mostly de-royalizing, calling it a reich doesn't make much sense
at least to me
apaprently Deutsch evolved from latin "theudo" ("the people").
as we were mostly connected by our language back then it probably became something like "land der deutsch sprechenden" ("Country of the german speaking")
-> Deutsch(es) Land -> Deutschland
Yeah. Plus, "land" sounds like it's more about the people than the politics
Maybe it just has to do with how it sounds?
Francland sounds weird maybe? Francdom too? So france it is?
ever heard of Texas German?
Ah, so it's etymologically related to Teutoburger Wald
Yes. Wtf is that.
Frankenland

Help us captio...
Which ironically is a nickname given to the region of Franken which is in southern Germany
And Amish, they also use german I think? Or like a mix of ...
german & yiddish
Yeah, crazy stuff 🤣 I heard it once.
thats a region in germany
ok making that distinction is understandable
Frankenland probably got the name first 🤣
Sounds a lot like my local dialect
Haha, a mix of who has what and how it sounds I guess.
And what the country calls itself.
Duitsland and Germany are very different though.
and who wants to redo all the paperwork
"simmer" instead of "sind wir" or "hammse" instead of "haben sie"
Not really, I can understand it perfectly except for the english bits
🤣
When I was in high school, we shared the building with students who decided to become plumbers. We always called their school "Texas" because it was full of insane delinquents who only brought trouble and teachers couldn't establish any order lol
It sounds very regionalized tho, seems to originate from Northwest Germany
basically if the country evolved from some kind of empire-like structure, it's a -reich. if it evolved from a shared culture it's probably a -land
evberything else gets it's own word
Speaking a mix of languages is pretty evil imo
my brain is never prepared for two languages and then for every word, you gotta switch between languages.
on top of that you sometimes have accents, slang, etc.
Oh yeah and a lot of the common mistakes that english speakers make when learning German as a second language.
Like messing up the articles in gendered words
Between Belgium and the Netherlands, there are common words that mean totally different things.
Poepen - To take a 💩
Poepen - To have sex.
Which is funny cuz the German portion of what she's saying is definitely a dialect of sorts, just one that happens to be quite familiar to me
ok what the hell happened there to have 2 cultures decide to have that kind of split
so it sounds more north west german than from anywhere else?
🇳🇱 huur - rent
🇩🇪 Hure - whore
Yup.
makes sense since i think a lot of german immigrants here were from there
English "poop" vs German "poppen"
🇳🇱 Hoer - whore.
not that far from "hure"
replace the U with an O and then move the E infront of the R 🤣
If I heard her talk at a family gathering, I'd have no doubt that she's from somewhere in Westphalia
Well, except for the English
"Hammse" and "simmer" are very distinct
just wild that someone decided to slam not just german and english together, but 2 very distinct regional dialects of the 2 together
Who thinks of putting german and yiddish together ...
she's clearly speaking german to me, but with a very strong Texas accent, even compared to people/celebs known for being Texans
Languages have a life of their own. Getting influenced by multiple factors over time. You get crazy stuff.
Des isch a mischmasch aus mehrere dialegde
then there's the german that sounds British English to me 🤣
Have y'all heard Plattdeutsch?
It's not even a German accent or dialect, it's a whole different language
flatgerman?
it's mostly the AR/ER at the end of a word that's more of a "aah/eeh". american english definitely reads that as ARR/ERR
i've heard a fair amount of Schwiizertüütsch
had 3 university professors from Switzerland 🤣
dialects can get crazy
it's crazy how a language like german can branch out like that in not too long of a time
and not too large of an area
"Proto-Germanic itself was likely spoken after c. 500 BC"
Germanic "windauge" (wind eye) → English "window"
Latin "fenestra" → German "Fenster" (window)
The proces has been going on for a long time afaik.
I love how we gave up our word for window to the Brits and adapted our own from the Romans
From the time of their earliest attestation, the Germanic varieties are divided into three groups: West, East, and North Germanic. Their exact relation is difficult to determine from the sparse evidence of runic inscriptions.
England has its name from the Anglo-Saxons
huh. i thought that the split was a lot more recent than that
So all germanic languages are rooted in the same.
Nah, it all just keeps evolving. Like Belgium is fairly new country.
So that split created our own language who branched from dutch in the Netherlands. Mixed with german and french.
Flemish 🙂
oh brain fart
I don't get it why we call it like that.
Luxembourgish also fun
especially since Belgian sounds so much nicer than Flemish, just as words
phlegm is something you hork up
I like the sound of the word "flämisch" more than "belgisch" ngl
ok you're just making that up
with the -isch, definitely
We (northern part) speak "Nederlands" - which translates to Dutch. But we also speak "Vlaams" which translates to "Flemish".
But if we say Dutch, then people think of the Netherlands. So Flemish it is.
Down south they speak French or "Waals". In Brussels they speak both.
Somewhere to the SE we have a tiny german speaking part.
ok i LOVE that
might just be my proximity to mexico
but i'd love to see that be the official name
and it makes sense with the ned/spa relationship
More like invaded I believe 🤣
Funfact: NL independence from Spain was negotiated and decided as part of the Westphalian peace treaty signed in Münster
just call it a "merger"
But yeah, there are lots of connection to Spain in Europe.
That's why EU (the continent) is kinda fascinating. So many "marks" left by "visitors".
And the NL ambassadors arrived in a horse carriage with four horses which was reserved for delegations of independent states (which at the time they were not)
Spain is the reason we exist 🤣 The Netherlands didn't want to leave/epart/revolt against Spain. So we rebelled and left the Netherlands.
Ireland also has a lot of Spanish influence in the southwest actually.
There are Spanish ornaments on portside buildings in Dingle for example
But because we were weak as a province (Vlaanderen).
We found partners from France and Germany.
spanish bridge in Galway 🤣
That's why we speak 3 languages.
So we are just a mix of 3 parts of those countries, because we were pissed off and left.
Cuz instead of trading through Britain and France, they could just trade with Spain
i do like that since so much of it happened a long time ago, it can be talked about without starting a bar fight
the most intense it gets is in a football match, and that's about it
What does a Dutchman do after the Netherlands win the world cup?
Turn off EAFC and touch grass
Spain conquered all to here.
From here to UK is not far. You can see it on a good day.
So not surprising at all tbh.
Mongol empire was also pretty big btw.
Reminded me of the Doggerland video by Miniminuteman, very interesting
i live in a bowl. can't see shit
This is France, but this part is very close
our only major geographical features are a mountain that looks like a camel, and another mountain that twice a year puts the shadow of a puma on itself
ngl, sounds cool 😛
We got flat surface to offer. Grass. Sand. Trees.
But no mountains 🙁
I was surprised to see Scottish islands when I was visiting Glenariff Forest Park in Northern Ireland
Good climb?
would 100% want to hike it 🤣
we have geniuses who'll start out at like 10am there with no water in the middle of July
when it's already 45C
Yeah, no.
400m summit
I guess it's best to do it early in the morning?
best to do it in the winter
And that too 🤣
the low here in the summer is ~30C
doesn't cool down at night?
not really
the built-up area of the valley is around 40,000km2
massive heat island
we're #1 in the world for mountain rescues
teams from the Himalayas come here to train
On camelback mountain?
the mountains all around us
Ah, because camelback doesn't look that bad, 825 m elevation
South Mountain, Superstitions, Estrellas, White Tanks
Ok, when it comes to the names. Weak start. But the rest are good 🤣
🤣
South Mountain is the largest city park in the world
but yea, there's usually at least 1 helicopter rescue a week between those areas
almost daily in the summer months
there's a mountain NE of the valley called Four Peaks. guess why
Ok, all this talk makes me want to hike again. Was thinking of visiting Bastogne. To see historical sights of the Battle of the Bulge.
Also wanted to do it in the cold months, to feel how it is.
Do I say, thank him for his service?
was about to mention, US side 🤣
oof. can't remember. i know he landed 2 weeks after D-Day
this might be an insult, but maybe it exists somewhere in germany if you ever wanted to try it
ah good point
fucking sucks!
also god knows what it's like compared to the local stuff
can't we just go back to the good old days 🤣
yes please
There are so many countries with good beer.
The same that French wine is also a bit "overrated". In the sense you got alternatives from different countries really compteting.
i love how so many blind taste tests can't determine what wine is from where
yup, probably the same with beer.
You got 💩 beer. And good beer. And some stuff in between 🤣
No matter where it is from.
unless it's super regional with a blatantly specific taste, yea
something like Guinness
Yeah, thats one thing, the local grains can impact it.
But with global economy.
Yeah, we got a few strong beers here.
the only super specific stuff we have here probably wouldn't sell well anywhere else
My favorite one.
mainly because of the names
brewed here
hard to get. Low production.
horribly outdated, in desperate need of roof repair
yea, that's just really upsetting from an american viewpoint. wish we had that stuff here
Eh, it comes with a history too ofc.
true
Might be the best thing we got out of it 🤣
but also from my view, i'm jealous of the greenery
we get about 8cm of rain a year on a wet year
Yeah, we got lots of grass. But it's getting harder to maintain, country wide. Lots of years with heat waves. And no water in the ground.
this last year killed off a ton of pine & palm trees here
Fire?
Ok, yeah, could turn into fire. Good nobody got hurt or lost property.
there was a big fire up at the Grand Canyon this year, destroyed the old cabin grounds sadly
~100 years old
but we're also a big state, canyon's off in the corner
Sucks to hear. I don't think it's going to get any better anytime soon.
Heard recently on a podcast there is +- a 30 year delay with climate change. So the changes we see now are the consequences of 30 years ago.
yea, i worry about what we're going to see with the acceleration
It's going to get worse. Because of the 30 year delay.
If we stop change. It takes 30 years to catch up.
It was regarding why we shouldn't stop our efforts, because there is no quick gain, we have to wait a long time to reap the fruits of our labor.
i'm just hoping that we can set up enough renewable to start making atmospheric carbon capture plants
we got so much work to do
and at this stage I still believe we also need keep our minds open into investing in transition energy sources (something between fossil -> full green energy).
Like Nuclear.
Because I hear a lot of negativity around it lately, but it's really not that black and white.
Ideally, yes we should get rid of it. But we can't just go from 0 to 1.
I am still jalous of China.
Nuclear Fusion plant.
i mean, harnessable to the grid fusion is still a ways off
but yes, throw everything at the wall and see what sticks
You wont get there if you don't take the first step. Like they did.
But green energy is only one part of the solution*.
We still got to reduce global emmision.
i kinda like the canadian one that's like a giant fusion combustion engine
oh definitely, it's not just scaling up with renewables, but also scaling down petroleum
you got EV?
yup
Happy with it?
for what i use it for, it's the best car i've ever had
Was just reading so many negative comments under an article about EV and the rise in prices.
Well, it's more they believe EV will fail.
Because recently, in the Netherlands, the price to charge increased.
so long as it's cheaper per mile than petrol/diesel, it wins
But it also just feel they are more emotional than rational.
Their arguing there is no transparancy. And no regulation. So people wont switch to EV.
the one thing that's really holding people back from buying is the slow charge rate, even from DCFC
it needs to build up the distance as fast as filling up with petrol
that's really the only way "range anxiety" will go away
i have a relative that drives 40km one-way to work every day, and my car would still be able to keep up with overnight charging. but she has 0 interest in an EV
I wonder why.
BS "range anxiety"
I think some people use that as an excuse 😛
Maybe people don't like change. Or the looks.
I do think range might be an issue over here. We don't have recharge points everywhere yet.
my EV had some fire issues early on that gave it a bad reputation, but it was solved
So depending on where you go, you might want to prepare beforehand.
also there's still a ton of garbage charging cables being sold that'll burn that turn people off
we have people getting electrocuted doing that with street lights
Imagine wanting to go to work and your car isn't charged lol
around here we have the stupid massive trucks, and their issue is that it's easy to crawl under with a sawzall and chop out the catalytic converter to sell for cash
Yup
Saw it in YT video. Some ...euhm... you know some with a particular color of neck that tunes and drives cars 🤣
Amazing dude btw.
i'm lucky, my EV "experience" is about as easy as it can be. detached house, closed garage, had enough room on the main panel to add in 2x 240V/60A breakers for it, and short runs for them
Yeah, I mean. It are horror stories.
But there must be reason why people don't switch. I have mine. But those are pretty unique.
haha 🤣
if i wanted to, 0-100kph in 6.5
I can't get over the "no-sound". But I am into cars 🤣
it matches his teenage years Camaro Z28
Yeah, they go quick.
the weird one for me was getting used to no shifting
Wont deny that 😛
Where is my westvleteren 12 crate?
oh, i also think that people who "hate" EVs have only experienced the Tesla one pedal driving
If you ever visit here, I will prepare a beer for you, I keep the crate though 😛
I wanted to visit Amsterdam but I highly doubt we would take a car. Most likely a bus
Or train?
But I could buy a few bottles though if I visit Belgium
I already have enough trauma from local train 🤣
my dad's told us the story about how his friend bought a Lincoln Continental because you could undo 2 screws in the rear armrest, and it'd open up a cavity where you could fit 24 bottles IN EACH SIDE without seeing it in the back seat or the boot
repair is not going anywhere
and the sapre headphones somehow have this weird contact problem where I need to actively slightly push connector to make it sound stereo, except for some lucky times when it stays on it's own
oh no
it is problem on jack's side... moving cable around does the same thing
bruh I didn't even use them as much
I remember drinking Leffe as a 18 year old kid but didn't like it. Perhaps my taste perceptors weren't fully developed back then 😄
it was the famous Continental too, with the suicide doors from The Matrix
absolutely gigantic, but god that's a sexy car
Leffe is eh. More like casual beer to me 😛
It's like when I mention czech beers I drink to Maxeek and he wants to vommit
Local brewery here ruined several czech beers by adding 20% more water....
I remember several czech beers which were directly imported from Czech Republic and they were decent....until local brewery got rights to refill them here
Yes, there was an explosion of craft breweries 5 years ago
Niice! That's the stuff.
Much better than industrial crap
Yeah, I think so too.
Need to burn down Heineken brewery here
I agree btw.
and EV cars wont look that ever because no grill 😭
I hate when I bought some decent czech beer for my colleagues at work and they still wanted that Heineken crap
Eh, cheaper to pour down I guess.
I paid for the beer so it didn't really matter
Like, I find you decent beer but you still want garbage 😭
We use Duvel (Devil) to knock someone out. 8.5% 🙈
It has a tarnado in the middle because of the scratches in the glass (done on purpose).
I bought Absinthe once and drank the shot without diluting it first. Felt like drinking sulfuric acid
I had the green one
I don't think it's legal anymore 🤣
Looks like they pulled it from the grocery store here too and you can only buy it from specialized alcohol store
think Vincent van Gogh cut his ear off because he was drinking the stuff.
The original version made people hallucinate but that version has been banned long time ago
Correction: the cheap version from 19th century had additives which made you hallucinate
i did discover what classic looks like a current EV
the groovy Corvair
yup
Messerschmitt in the rear
that is a good candidate to turn into an EV btw.
yea, resurrect that body style
oh i thought you meant bringing it back
yea we have a few conversion companies here
it's always weirded me out that those conversions that just bolt up to the old transmission don't shift
sleeper evs 🤣
that's what i like about mine, it doesn't have an EV look
if you look at it close, then yea, you see the gas door is on the front fender & it's not for gas
most boring lookin' ass commuter in the world, and it'll outrun a camaro
if i still had my ancient pickup i'd definitely be looking at converting it
range would have been absolutely dogshit tho, it was 3 tons empty
i think most people like older cars
i feel like early 2000s was peak for cars in reliability and styling, at least in the US
🤣
eh, depends
my car before this one was the 03 civic, and the visibility in it was insane compared to cars made today
plus i could push 50mpg in it
i want to rip my eyes out looking at that jelly bean
i did once have dreams of making it into one of the fun ones
the only thing i ever needed to replace on it were the radiator hoses
it didn't weigh enough to wear the shocks, even after 20 years 🤣
and you could scream at 70kph in first
i like the sporty look of the old days
i like stuff like the bolide in beamNG
old but still looks new
i bet it still sucked like modern cars do
it was actually great
never broke down
it had those old full width bench seats all the way across
and the reverse 3rd row
for being a mid-80s american car, it was shockingly decent
every once in a while i'll see a Mercedes wagon near where i live
for some reason a german wagon just looks weird to me
the fake grill 🤮
i was more looking at the back end
even with the extra cabin space, still managed to make it look like a banana
that curve down in the back is just unforgivable
just looks too long imo.
it looks melted
theres actually quite a few classic that i see around still driving
meanwhile bmw 🤣
we're super spoiled with classics here. nothing rusts
there obviously a less than 1% ocasion but like most people atleast know of 1 person that has some kind of old car
one of my neighbors has a roadworthy Model A 🤣
like my uncle got this camaro that he turned into a drag car as a summer project
i forgot how long they were honestly
and the ground clearance!
cool stuff
spotted this on the road a couple years ago
the car or the ugly short busses?
interesting design
i dont hate that one as much because it looks like a old rally car
so i know it CAN look good
all that and they still couldn't bring themselves to do FWD
now you've got me going thru my phone
classic turned into a legend
i did say that things don't rust around here
i'm always the one driving when i see one of them, but there are 2 VW Things/181s that are near me. one's purple and the other is lime green
ok, dumb question time
about active USB/hdmi/DP
do they make an active "union" adapter for any of those, to be used between 2 passive cables
or do the active versions of those cables have something else going on inside them
a passive cable can't pass on some active signal
so what's extra inside an active cable vs passive?
it depends on the cable, but for max power draw on USB they use an active processor inside of the cable to tell the device that higher currents are supported for power.
They allow communication for things like a phone for example which may want to charge itself to a specific battery % or at different rates
does the processor in the cable also amplify whatever signal is going thru it?
it can do
i assume it uses some of that power boost to do that
as well as letting that power pass through
simple processors can use very little power nowadays, but yes
got my new vr rig and am a bit weirded out by it
hence the questions 🤣
the weirdest part is the direct connection is USB-C
feels wrong to not be plugging right into my gpu
frickin 4090 and not using it for VR gaming
it can be wireless, but it has to go thru my router
was thinking about using a wacky USB extension thing to give it a bit more distance
really any usb cable will do as long as it can hold the data transfer rate
power will come down to what headset
quest 2 will just drain its battery and handle filling the gaps and focus on data
something like a index will probably shit the bed
quest 3s, 18W
then yea if its not supplied enough power it will just use its own battery so not much concern there
main concern for you will be data
and honestly wireless is only about a 100mbit connection so might be worth ditching cable if you can
atleast 100 is the default anyway
ok dumb question
my mobo has wifi 7 on it
could i somehow make my pc a hotspot and use it as my "direct connection" to my pc instead of going through my router?
router is 5G, and >15m away
ok, can confirm that works just fine 🤣
i was kinda worried that opening up a hotspot would disable my PC's internet connection for some reason
I found an interesting read
On academia press
There's a large report on research used for Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty for nuclear weapons from 1997
Topic of nuclear arsenal is a bit present on politics right now, though I ask not to bring politics here.
Interest rises from the fact that this is international cooperation involving seismology, data gathering and automated analysis. Including for earthquakes. It's not too in depth, but it brings up questions of what magnitude is needed to be detected worldwide for successful functioning of treaty, and what capabilities are present (at the moment), along some other interesting details like how to differentiate explosion from natural earthquake.
It is like almost 30 years old. But, even back then magnitude 4 worldwide wasn't an issue.
Austria-Hungary / Austro-Hungarian Empire at start of WW1
And Germany only unified starting in 1866 and finishing around 1871.
Austrian Empire in 1815:
Also, Austrian Empire is the leftovers of the Holy Roman Empire, which included modern Germany.
Same ruling family (Habsburgs).
First Habsburg family King of Germany was Rudolf Habsburg I in 1273.
you'd think they'd update the terminology
Changing names is HARD.
I don't think the GPU I want is going to be on sale 🙁
Managed to live black week to this point, now ordered new TV/monitor
LG 55" C5 4K OLED evo TV (2025).
Yeah, I am not good at this shit. I think I might get one today 🤣
How much did you pay for it?
1099€ Thats the Black week price for it on every finnish retailer
Next step up like Samsung S95F with 165Hz panel would have been 600€ more
Bought my 55" C9 in summer of 2022, barely used for under 500€
Researched the release price, was like 2300€ or smth
It will be my PC monitor
So basically the equivalent of four 27.5" FHD panels in a 2×2 arrangement
Something like that, the current 65" on my desk is slightly too high to the upper part to be usable, would need to cut the desk and lower it.
And its VA panel
From another channel:
Lmao yep sounds about right
Somewhere in the monitor settings there should be option to change from the current "Fit" or whatever to "Scale" or similar.
The button menus.
"Scaling" or similar as the setting name.
But the exact place and name etc. depend on monitor type, so cannot give more in depth instructions without knowing the monitor model.
But usually up to four options: One to just spread the image to fill whole area (what you have), one to scale up retaining the aspect ratio until first edges are hit (what you want), one to scale up retaining aspect ratio until whole screen is filled, cutting part off, and 1:1 in pixels, with black bars on all sides in some cases.
Splice box has been installed. Fiber service should be active by the end of the year 😊
Love it
Specifically ai vibe coding.
Thought maybe better presented as mold/corruption slowly spreading on.everything, beginning with microsoft
I'm confused what does (as 2560x1440) mean?
the resolution that the output to the monitor is.
I get its a resolution, but why is two listed here?
Its probably what you say, 2560x1440 is the output but the gpu is rendering in 4k, seems like extra work for really nothing, so kind of weird
usually you want the render resolution match the output resolution, which is why i was confused why two would be listed
Aws should be on top of cloudflare...
Other way, 4k monitor that is sent 2560x1440 output.
Like I said, probably intentional 150% scaling to make stuff bigger.
Huh I thought it was 2560x1440 was the monitor, you think 4k is the monitor resolution, that seems like a even worse idea, because your resolution is going to lower than the monitor, thats going to reduce things like clarity, etc
Nope
Its the exact same as display scaling in windows
So it's still sending a signal at native resolution to the monitor but text and ui elements are sized like its the lower resolution
Because 4k at 27in is very very small
Programs that are DPI aware get rendered in full resolution.
Programs that aren't DPI aware are lied to about the resolution and the bitmap final render is rescaled up.
Where those DPI aware programs rescale everything by the selected ratio themselves.
Not to worried about GPU performance on this system anyhow, essentially any display adapter would work
Oh I see that, that makes sense, doesn't like a terrible idea than, because I was imagining trying to see blurry text, etc because it would be in a lower resoluton, which didn't seem great to me😅
Better little blurry, than too small to see.
Thanks YT for AI generated 💩
All this money poured into AI, and it can attempt to sum up a video. Great value 🤣
I wonder how many horoscopes are being AI generated nowadays
You know what.
I think AI might be as accurate in that as humans.
Lately, I encounter more and more AI websites.
They are mostly white, with information about mostly anything since AI just generates crap.
It looks very structured, but once you look at the url and start connectinging the dots, it feels AI generated.
Could also just be bad designed websites 🤣
Any time I search for any surface level thing, I encounter a bunch of random sites with seemingly dictionary-generated URLs and texts that trigger my uncanny valley
I think this yeah.
My go-to trick for that:
If applicable, limit search results to pre-COVID
Should get rid of most AI generated slop
I miss pre-covid.
i miss the start of covid
one has to love when API interprits off value same as on
like, life wouldn't be as interesting without these pranks
I have it on good authority that you have to use ai to code at ms or you get fired
Like you have to use github agents
oh but that's not all.
if you pass any other value then these two, it will say that it's invalid value, and that it only accepts, and I quote "on and null".
so off isn't even documented.
let there be a collapse
but that's not all either.
if you pass empty string for that param,
it will be treated same as on again!
so the only way to disable that flag is to no not include it at all.
feels like someone vibecoded that shit
That's terrible 💀
Hehe, it's british
yep
it allows field to be skipped, or get 'on', 'off' or '' (empty)
while skipped field is logical false, and both 'on' and '' (empty are logical true
while if you try any other input (including 'null'), it tells you that it accepts either on or null
so off isn't documented and behaves objectively wrong
and null is ambiguous since who the fuck new that empty value is still true, but completely omitting is false (default behavior isn't explicitly specified)
it's called making sure you can't complain that the option does not exist
while making it hard to tell you can't really configure it anyway
common shit lately
There's a chance it's an old code
Like... Really old
Though option seems to be new
Website does let you download some fortran script for parsing it's format 🙂
I feel your pain 🤣
@twin dew What zipper did you use again, was it Nanazip?
You know it's made in China?
And 7ZIP is Russia. And Peaship is EU.
Was thinking of testing out the Pea.
This is what I mean with AI bullshit websites. Or it feels so
Wtf is C:WindowsWebWallpaper?
C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper does exist. Both two different websites, copying some shit, have the same mistake.
And both are probably AI content sites.
Right?
And now that I think of it, probably bad escape character handling.
As \ is very common escape and/or command character.
When autoparsing the net to collate the stuff to get clicks.
The age of ai slop is here.
yeah, ofc. But the copy/paste is what I am looking at. How big is the chance two websites, with "real humans", writing original guides, make the same "typo".
It's going quicker than I though.
Those crap machine curated "pull everything in into crap" sites have already existed for several years minimum.
but now that Google is pushing for ai
it's all pulled as first result
I started using 7zip at work and now use it on my PC. Never going back to stupid winzip/winrar
Not to mention I am the kind of person who just closed that window asking me to pay and never paid a single cent for winzip subscription
Not only google, I use duckduckgo, which is using binge, same results.
but you did pay for the winrar, so it must be good 😛
No, didn't pay a single cent
it is kinda iconic to have software without an auto update mechanism these days
only way to review shit before it self insert
only other software that i'm using, that I noticed not to have an one click update button is Calibre
Some shitty company must have sold my data because I suddenly keep getting unknown phone calls from Slovenia and the numbers are always different....
Must be some scam....
Questioning life decisions I see
Yes. Regret that I picked gaming as a hobby.
If I can go back in time, I pick fishing as a hobby.
Cursed machine is still cursed... And nothing makes sense.
Yeah. I think I am done. I can replace parts for eternity probably.
Was thinking of replacing the motherboard. But at this point, what does it even matter.
Replaced CPU, PSU, GPU, ...
Hopefully your next PC shouldn't have issues
There will be no next PC. I just dropped shitton money on this crap build.
With completely new parts that is
And if there is a new PC, it will be a prebuilt because I am done with this shit.
Also can't get rid of this shit:
Secure Boot CA/keys need to be updated. This device signature information is included here.

I'll buy you a new PC if you help me fix excel file with at least 6000 garbage customer data
Spent hours trying to remove garbage Marketing department sent me
The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error Secure Boot is not enabled on this machine.. For more information, please see xxx
So dumb, updating something that isnt enabled on the bios and then failing.
Instead of checking if it's enabled first. Fucking idiots.
I updated windows on my parents laptop recently and it messed up boot. Managed to save windows after some struggle
Windows update really knows how to mess up everything....
Yeah, windows is full garbage at this point.
They just lucky 90% + users don't llook under the hood to see it all fall apart
Microsoft better be using ShockGPT collar on their employees if they catch them vibe coding
You open AI prompt = electric shock
Iirc its part of their biz strategy.
Think I closed winzip window asking me to pay like 1000 times
But now I use 7zip and don't have to worry anymore
People are usually scared of new tools since they look different but 7zip is actually easy
I cannot find it back, but I though I read an article of a company banning AI.
And telling they can only use the AI of the company itself or something.
We have our own AI called Pluto. Hope it won't replace me 🙈
and btw asablic, chat control is back 🙁
R.I.P. Knew it would return in some different form
Voluntarily required In the amended proposal, the scanning of chat messages is a voluntary option for providers and facilitators of communication services. At the same time, the new text imposes an obligation on companies to limit risks around child abuse material. Article 4 of the new proposal states that hosting providers and providers of communication services must take 'all reasonable measures' for risk mitigation when they see a risk that their services are being used for online activities related to child abuse. "The mitigation measures will be limited, where possible, to an identifiable part of the service, or to specific users or specific groups or types of users, without compromising the effectiveness of the measure," the amended proposal says.
Google translated.
If something is required it isn't voluntarily.
This formulation is very broad due to terms such as 'where possible' and 'groups or types of users'.
Basically looks like "Optional but you take legal liability if you choose not to implement"
Why doesn't this law want to die 🙁
Because it's really really good for the people making the rules
"But Think Of the Children!"
I do think of the Children.
Lots of control and it's a "think of the children" law
The end justifies the means - logic. What can go wrong.
Reminds me of that movie, Equilibrium. Saw it long time ago. But I think everyone has to take pills, to control their emotions, and so there is world peace.
Because everyone is a zombie or something 🤣 The movie also plays with the idea "the end justifies the means".
Even if that risk is not too bad, there is still the danger that this broad control can have an oppressive effect on people, their communication and therefore society. Breyer therefore warns that chat control is a **totalitarian **system for mass surveillance. He argues that the new compromise goes further than a previously rejected proposal: from AI-powered monitoring of shared files to full scanning of private messages and metadata as well. The Belgian encryption specialist Bart Preneel of KU Leuven also touches on this expansion to De Morgen.
Which is why that stuff is coated in that "Think of the children" top layer, while the actual reason is more sinister.
Yeah, but who cares right? Some people in a discord channel ... but main population, I don't think they care. 90% is probably a parent themselves and think it's a good idea.
and I think the core of the issue (protecting the children) wont go away, it will find different ways.
speaking of which, Australia also banned twitch now for -16 kids.
Not sure what is going on down south 🤣
Guess our world will eventually turn into 1984 novel....
Sometimes I think, am I too skeptical? But then I am like; people literal wrote books and made movies about it. So they saw the same potential dangers as I do.
Dune for example, in that lore you got a giant fight between computers/AI and everyone else. That's the reason computers are banned in Dune and you wont see em.
They use humans genetically modified with dust as "components" so they can make jumps through space.

Fuck me, ads in embedded.
Yee it's bad.
Hope I will wake up from this nightmare in a pod full of sticky fluid and plugs all over my body, only to get flushed into the sewers, grabbed by a hook and welcomed by a bald man saying "Welcome to the real world, asablic" 🤣
I would love that 🤣
I would probably stay in the simulation though, with crazy super powers.
If the "real world" has foxgirls sure
I loved animatrix more than the matrix movies
But it's crazy how much of the pop culture is rooted in "skepticism" towards technology/future.
especially in the 2000-2020 era. Now it's mostly garbage 🤣
mhhh, I don't have that. maybe cause I disabled embeds? only see timy YT thing with channel name and title
Something Something enshitification of the internet.
Anyone knows the Minority Report? I miss those movies.
ye ye, I was talking about that here before.
like if church is back at instilling fear in scientific progress
Think I've heard of it.
hehe, but also skeptical to technology
Too tired to recall 🤣
Well, this skepticism is rooted in real concerns.
Like privacy, and like I said so many times; do the means justify the end?
Tom Cruise is there. maybe that helps
Like can you put a bunch of ladies in a pool of water to predict future crimes, and then eliminate those people before they executed their crimes?
What if the prediction is inaccurate? What if one tiny change, makes it so the person doesn't do the crime etc.
Probably just me, but those movies really made me think about things. Modern movies don't provoke that anymore.
can you let leading software distributor get away with promoting gambling in one of the most popular games? (valve, csgo, lootboxes, bet thirdparty services)
The whole world is build on gambling. What do you think stocks are 🤣
I know some people in here saw some sort of video and are all pised at steam.
but I am so fucking confused. Like gambling is going on for about 15 years in games.
And now people are pissed because Valve did something to the market? Wtf. What about all the other shit?
Like Genshin Impact or something.
The trading cards have been a thing for ever in steam. I don't get where this sudden community wide hate comes from.
You literally have a banana game on steam, and the only purposse ... is gambling and selling banana skins.
Fornight is build on gambling. Every game that has RNG is using gambling in a way ...
they are a great source for though and caution, when they present issue correctly.
what I don't like, is when someone with agenda present just one side of question, forcing solution they got paid to promote wnt to see in real world.
game example: The Talos Prinsiple presents both sides of conflict between limiting growth to preserve nature and not repeat old mistakes (of humanity) against embracing new tech that solves survival but comes at great responsibility for messing things up big way
kids can't go gambling stocks. but they can ask dad for credit card to buy shiny skin , then bet it on another cs:go match.... rinze repeat
Team Fortress, 2007, always had skins. And after 18 years people are mad? 🤣
Ok, so you don't want kids to gamble.
not always as far as I recall. that shit started in 2010s, maybe exactly around 2012 even.
tf2 doesn't have esports of cs2's size.
problem is in fact that this shit breaks young minds, I saw that while was in school. all they care whole day is if their bet was good, not to study math.
I think I had the same conversation with Fireworker, and steam does shitty stuff. For sure. But name a company that doesn't do shitty stuff?
It's picking between bad, badder (I know not a word), and worse.
I've seen kids fight over pokemon cards in my days? So we also gotta ban that? Which is also gambling.
Kids buys a pack of card with random cards hoping for a shinny one. And magic the gathering, yugio, I think all pack card game do this.
And if you want to buy specific cards, I did it for magic the gathering, you can pay a lot of money.
hehe, you are reminding me of rhethoric I read in news lately on a completely unrelated topic I don't want to bring up...
question is not in picking, question is at 1 recognizing what is good or bad, and why 2 promote what's good 3 get rid of bad as much as reasonable
there are planty of games and companies that are no involved in gambling, especially letting minors do that.
and there seem to be legal ways to remove gambling, though last I heard even in EU it won't be easy.
lastly, it's a question of whoever pays for those skins to not do that, including vloggers who buy them fora nother 'loot box opening' video
though there's always a way to trigger change by letting something rot so hard it annoys too many people and they enforce change. doesn't work with everything though. but smokeless fire has its own danger
actually, I mentioned valve' blind eye on kids gambling as part of 'does end justify the means'
the end: valve gets lots of money
means: they implemented gambling and don't monitor who does that, including allowing third party sites to profit on their system
somehow, you were talking about being skeptical, yet defended valve's stance 🙂
though reallife recent example that is much closer to government enforing policies 'to keep public order' is with ID verification before accessing websites.
fear is always that someone with power will abuse system. and this is where trust in system comes at play, defining reception by public, before anyone with pwoer could begin abuse.
if public doesn't trust government - there will be problems... and even good policies won't function as good as they could.
and until people at large are running the state, it will remain a lever
And don't see how one can't be skeptical, and also be skeptical to a community wide hysteria around Valve 😊
Being skeptical doesn't mean I am not allowed to disagree with opinions.
Meanwhile Ubisoft is making deals with Tencent and nobody is batting an eye. (Todays news, they are very close).
It feels like a targetted attack on Valve atm. While putting up blinders to all the rest of the gaming 💩 companies.
didn't say you can't, just interesting
EA being sold. Nobody gives a fuck.
But Valve, ooh how dare you mess with the market and CS:GO skins.
hehe, I just remembered about valve, though that topic of gambling re-entered me maybe half a year ago, if not earlier...
and ubisoft is just not something I care about. don;t play their games, don't expect anything. best they did was nurtured author of E33
It more reads to me as this; a bunch of people were investing in skins. Then the market collapsed. And then they blame it on Valve.
hehe, that's news to me
If I put my money into stock, and that company collapses, and I am mad. I shouldn't have invested.
It's very silly that a bunch of gamblers, are blaming Valve ... for gambling mechanics.
The most I sold a skin for was 0.03 euro cents. Because that's the lowest.
And the highest I sold it for was 0.01 euro cents. So I lose jack shit. Maybe that's why I am not bothered by it.
Well, I've seen lot of YT videos in my feed being mostly pissed off about that atm.
It's like a junky being mad at their dealer for dealing drugs.
oh no I am out of the news stream
valve is on my mind only because I saw steam machine recently.
I know I am kinda defending Valve, which I don't want too, because it's a million/billion/trillion dollar company.
But on the other hand, I am happy as a gamer that we have something like Valve. Hard to describe. Maybe it's a bit nostalgia mixed in.
if that's who got them into it... very much rightfully so
that's why I thought that bringing up gambling at valve is a decent example of does end justify the means
I am very old school.
I want to give my money for a game. Install it and never have to pay again for anything.
But sadly, that's not a reality.
And nobody can actually say if gaming would be sustainable without all the micro transactions. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten the games we have now.
Maybe a few companies went bankrupt. Maybe we were better off? Hard to tell.
the thing is, there could be other platforms that compete with valve. but that'd require the company to have less of a profit margin, which shareholders just can't tolerate. not a loss, just less of a profit.
Or the price for a game wouldn't be 70 dollars but around 200 dollars 🤷♂️
Also true.
There is Epic putting up the fight. Giving free games away daily/weekly if you are on Epic etc. "Come here little ones, I got some free candy for you all..." 🤣
Yeah I know, some good titles sometimes.
....and give us your sweet precious data
Also that. It just feels wrong.
Nightingale was a good one
But if that's all they can do to actually try to compete, it is what it is.
i managed to get Cities Skylines free from them, and Death Stranding
tomb raider
civ6 (meh, but still)
maybe, someone fucked up in history, to just allow this shit to happen in the first place.
Buying products, connecting it to one service. That service gone? All products gone.
Maybe we should have sticked with just downloading games straight from the website of who ever made the game? Or discs.
Like you pay, you get physical access to that game forever on a disc or other format.
If that was the case, steam wouldn't be a monopoly I think.
for solo games, i've made copies onto a separate drive so if something goes splat i can still play it
it's just because they have just a gigantic library of games to offer, they can do whatever they want.
Give developers barely any money? Where else you going to publish your game? etc.
I started to work on my own game 🤣 Nobody can take that away.
which engine?
UE5. Love it. Hate it.
also you're screwed there
I am making more progress, quicker than in an engine like Godot though.
cuz i think they can claim any of your work
wasn't that spore? or someone connected to it? just recently watched some lovely overview of what happened to it...
How? Hack into my PC 🤣
nah, check the ToS
I did. It has to do with how much revenue I make a month
but what about patches? content updates? limited time events?
last time i checked they had the right to claim any work done on their engine
So every game developer, provides this shit on their own servers.
This is how it was in 2000.
If I played age of empires, it had a launcher and it just updated the game 🤷♂️
my comment was about physical storage that distributes game
I think there should be github for games with ability to download any revision even if it doesn't work with online services.
oh wait, that sounds liek steam... except it doesn't provide older versions without developers giving beta codes
there always will besomeone who comes in and tries to centralize something
valve was great at being also the first to do that at large scale and promote that model with good games
I hate legal jargon.
As between you and us, you own all rights, other than rights in the Licensed Technology, in the Products you develop under this Agreement, and we own all title, ownership rights, and intellectual property rights in the Licensed Technology.
I own all rights. Nice.
other than Licensed Technology, in the products you develop under this agreement? WTF? 🤣
we own all title, ownership rights, and intellectual property rights in the Licensed Technology.
So if I am not mistaken. The licensed technology is UE5 (the engine itself).
which i think is one of those "you can make it on our engine, but unless we approve it, you can't sell it"
I honestly don't think that games should increase in cost or have transactions.
Free to play is a case where mass sort of benefit from a couple whales.
subscription is fair and square, but there's always a question of if developers are keeping wuality over time
one-time payment is not viable for online games really, they always find a way to ask for more. or that's pyramid scheme where ever ending influx of new players keeps it alive.
No, I don't think so Cuyar. But I am not sure either.
might want to look into it before getting too far if you plan on selling it
