like I have to reboot my PC if playing a game that uses all my resources

night girder
#

I remember now, it was steam cloud thing. I forgot what game, but it was uploading pretty giant saves to the cloud (multiple) and it could take a while.
At that time, the game in steam remained "running". Not sure if that helps.

jagged snow
#

Yeah, for a lot of games that have even remotely large save files I just disable steam sync

#

And I run periodic backups to my nas

#

I would love for steam to have the ability to replace the automatic cloud sync with an automatic sync to a drive of your choosing

thin trout
#

7200 is about as fast, yeah. But 7200c34 RAM is simply better than 6000 30. It's timing equivelant to ~6000 cl28, but also rated for higher speeds. The worst case is that you input about 5 settings and it's functionally equivelant to a 6000cl28 kit.

It's also often cheaper at the moment because most buyers don't know that it's strictly better, a lot are thinking it's 7200 so it doesn't "fit" and would be a bad kit.

dire igloo
thin trout
#

yes but they're written on the front of the box 😄

#

and nicely lined up on the first page of the bios

dire igloo
#

open BIOS, go to OC, enable memory profile, save and exit, done

#

Any more than that is too much to be telling people

pure karma
#

anything more than XMP is beyond set and forget

thin trout
dire igloo
thin trout
dire igloo
#

I could do that.
But I'm far from able to help others with it

dire igloo
thin trout
#

it depends a bit on your mobo and the memory configuration

#

is the real answer

pure karma
thin trout
#

for something that works on every board and configuration you have to go down to about ddr5-4000

pure karma
#

if its anything more than check the box and forget its not idiot proof

thin trout
#

yeah, just use 6000 is not idiot proof. I help people pretty much every day asking why their 6000 isn't working, and it's usually because they did those dumb mistakes.

#

like, they don't understand the context that 2dpc is different from 1dpc, and 6000 one click OC is only appropriate for 1dpc

pure karma
#

i have 6400 and it sucks

#

if i drop the speed my performance and latency goes to shit

#

if i leave it my stability goes to shit

#

ddr5 is just not... good? for the lack of a better word

dire igloo
dire igloo
thin trout
#

7600 or 6000 for 1dpc 1rpc

5600 for 1dpc 2rpc

#

3600 for 2dpc anything

pure karma
#

wtf is 1dpoasdr is the answer that i want to give you and its the proof your delusional about this

dire igloo
pure karma
#

it still means nothing to me when explained like this

dire igloo
pure karma
#

yea

dire igloo
#

1dpc means that for every RAM channel on your platform, you use exactly one RAM stick
2dpc means two sticks per channel

pure karma
#

so i have 1dpc

thin trout
#

5600 for 1dpc 2rpc
3600 for 2dpc anything

Those latter 2 configs are all of the people asking why 6000 isn't working.

They either use 2rpc and have an awful mem controler + bios auto's (often old bios etc), or they have changed the memory configuration to 2dpc and they're trying to use a 6000 profile off of a stick sold in a 1dpc kit.

dire igloo
#

Ranks are an internal subdivision of the RAM sticks.
For DDR5, that basically means anything up to a 24gb module is single rank, anything high is dual rank.

More ranks means more space for storage chips means higher capacity - but also lower stability

thin trout
#

6000 is paradoxically the hardest speed to auto to in some circumstances, because it's the peak speed for auto uclk=memclk, so the peak uclk. If you go up OR down then the uclk drops and uclk-limited configs become more stable.

That's why we get DR kits which are stable at say 5600 or 6800, but not at 6000, under auto UCLK rule.

dire igloo
pure karma
#

i mean i just have the traditional 2 sticks in a 4 slot board it dosent get much more simple than that

#

and from your explaination seemingly rank 1 chips

soft bloom
#

how likely it is to be able to repair wired headphones with right ear off? looks like cable just broke - that tiny thin cable bends too sharp in it's thin rubber cover

jagged snow
#

For wired headphones, quite likely

soft bloom
#

it's the side with micrphone.
looks like it had a terrible twist, since copper... I hope, shielding, is completely broken despite taking most of circumference
and there seems to be black cable, that just bends smoothly except in one place where I suspect it broke
and nearby there's a a white cable? but it's really thin, and is covered with copper wires, separately from a bunch of them I talked earlier

#

I am not sure what's that white core though. this side should carry micrphone and right ear. micrphone didn't work for some time already

jagged snow
#

My suggestion would be to purchase a replacement cable, open up the headphones, and solder the new cable directly in. I've done that successfully before. If the PCB isn't marked and the cable is still intact enough to do so, test for continuity from the jack to make sure you get the connections correct.

soft bloom
#

hmmm, continuity is a good test. that copeer mess coming from jack's side doesn't 'ring' to any of 4 contacts

jagged snow
#

There should be four wires, yes?

soft bloom
#

well that's the thing, I only can vaguely identify 3

jagged snow
#

Should be G+L+R+Mic

#

And they're usually different colors

#

I would strip the jacketing off an undamaged section of cable

soft bloom
#

I think I see black and dark-greenish for left side

#

fo the right there's obvious black, nearly broken white core that has copper strings around. and that copper mess with some traces of red inside (visible on photo

jagged snow
#

Yeah
I would cut the cable in an undamaged spot, strip the jacket and the four conductors, and identify them

#

Then open up the headset and solder on a replacement with the same connections

soft bloom
#

the 'speaker's are a bit tiny to open and solder something on them. but need to figure out a way to clean cable further indeed. rubber is quite elastic, doesn't cut easily

#

the gauge cut thingy didn't even leave a lasting mark

tribal kraken
#

oh the pain of soldering headset cables

visual tree
#

Fiber has finally arrived. Contractors are going to install manhole near the fence and dig trench in my yard 😄

#

I've been waiting since 1991 🥹

tribal kraken
#

My grid company is digging powerlines underground. They've been working along my commute for a couple of months now. About 10km distance, shuold make power delivery more stable, no small blackouts from snowy trees hitting air lines.

#

Just as replaced 2kWh of batteris in UPS 😄

visual tree
#

Ah, now I understand why you have solar panels 🙂

#

I am still waiting for solar panel permit from utility company...

#

Going to install 14 solar panels from Trina Solar (45O W) with optimizers and 5 kW huawei inverter

night girder
#

I have two options.

#

I buy now. I wait fews days praying for Black Friday Sales.

#

What you all think? (Last two days, nothing changes on the sales).

cyan crescent
#

So if i put a game into my 360 that ive never played on it before, will it download the update even after end of life or no?

twin dew
#

Probably not, as there shouldn't be anything to download it from anymore.

visual tree
#

My neighbours are going to be pissed for blocking the road because of fiber cable 😅

night girder
#

I think I will wait one more day maybe, the iGPU is holding on strong. Gaming and UE5 🤣

#

I am kinda impressed with what it can do in a pinch. I can't use some applications because they crash due the lack in GPU power.
Or they shitty programmed (open source programs like Material Maker struggles).

pure karma
#

I mean as long as you don’t crash any performance is enough

night girder
#

Right? 🤣 I am just happy that my system didn't crash for two days haha.

pure karma
#

im pissed because the city keeps putting bike lanes in peoples driveways and tearing down all the roads everywhere in the process so getting to school is becoming increasingly difficult

#

the diffrence is that isent a one day inconvinience like you fiber install

visual tree
#

At least nobody complained so far. We have a crazy neighbour lady who prevented ISP from installing fiber distribution cabinet because it is ruining her view from the balcony....

#

She has been quiet recently though because ISP sued her for blocking construction for which city permits were obtained

#

Btw, contractors are almost finished

glossy glacier
#

Street workers managed to cut the fibre cable of our house two weeks ago
Repaired it on Monday

pure karma
#

i love underground cables because technically there more of a hassle here

#

its literally a game of would you rather

#

dig out cables in the frozen, rock solid dirt or fix wood poles all winter

twin dew
pure karma
#

the ice?

#

ground moves you know?

twin dew
#

Reason why the stuff is not freely there, but contained in protective layers.

#

That can take the forces.

wanton orchid
#

Also as for stitches
if they are not dumb it should not be a perfectly straight line

#

waving can take it way easier

twin dew
#

Need slack in the cable for movement.

tribal kraken
#

At least this area, power cables will get dug deep enough that normal winter ground frost wont reach them, 50-100cm or so. So the frost actually protecs them

twin dew
#

That too, outside of permafrost areas.
Where you then have the cable inside permanently frozen ground instead, when done right.

#

Or below that still.

visual tree
#

They installed 50mm HDPE pipes for now and fiber cable will be pulled later through the pipes which is the easier part

#

I started replacing corrugated pipes in the garden where camera cat6 cables run through with HDPE pipes since those pipes are really robust. They are designed to last 50 to 100 years and can withstand mechanical force

jagged snow
#

In my area we tend to bury internet cables at 1-2m and power cables as low 3m

#

With typically around .75m to 1m frost depth

#

Although with a very mild winter it can be as low as .25m but that is very rare

visual tree
#

Telco infrastructure is usually 1 meter deep here and cables that go through people's garden is burried 30 or 40 cm deep

#

Now they just need to run fiber from street distribution cabinet to my attic where splice box will be installed

#

Also, ISP owns a microtrencher which drastically reduces cost since you don't have to dig large trenches

#

An example

#

Basically, a blade cuts small trench and you insert microducts inside a trench

tribal kraken
#

Horizontal directional drill also removes need to open up roads. Or allow going under water areas

#

Thats how they prepared small river crossing here during sumner. Now they just pull the power line thru the pre installed tube

visual tree
#

ISP uses it to avoid digging roads like you mentioned

#

30 years ago, I don't think we even had missile bore or microtrenching technology

tribal kraken
#

Yes, but also on larger scale. My friend runs a company and have made some custom parts to their machines.

twin dew
#

Basically not digging by side of roads either, just in specific spots and use those for most of the route.

#

Basically only digging for turns or when max distance is reached.

tribal kraken
#

Sometimes hes taking the "horizontal" to the limits or over, this is 48 degree powerline to bottom of mine 😄

#

The rusted steel "A" support for the drill was made in our workshop for that project only. Unusual position

decided to officially retire and replace my oculus CV1 instead of trying to save it

#

Quest 3S is a massive performance step up from it and is $250 rn

#

sadly they refused to make replacement cables for the CV1, so any replacements i could find were used and at least like $$40-50, with 0 warranty or guarantee it'd work. and idk if that was even the problem, but it'd have to be the first hardware step to fixing it.

so at the end of the day, i'd still have a decade old headset with dead headphones and a disintegrating strap after putting more money into it

Funnier when people write Münster as Munster
Cuz that's a whole different city

languid gulch

i think it's because for some stupid reason in english we call it Munich, so when we see it in proper german it throws us off

dire igloo

Fair

#

Not as bad as Köln vs Cologne tho

#

We used to joke about this in elementary school because people would mix Austria with Australia

languid gulch
#

"how'd you get to Australia without a passport?"

night girder

Austria is so weird for me, the word itself. Because it's not similar to the dutch word.

We call it "Oostenrijk" which is literal "east-empire".

languid gulch

what

#

it's SOUTH

night girder
#

Euh... what?

languid gulch

oh wait

🤣

night girder

Australia for example we call Australie.

But it's always a mindfuck to me, Austria... Austria???

well, Austria was a bit bigger back in the days, especially eastwards

night girder

Canada - Canada

England - Engeland
China - China

I think it has to do with modern countries. Or maybe not 🤔

Maybe the countries themselves decided it? 🤣

languid gulch

"German-speaking Frenchies, or French-speaking Germans?"

dire igloo

my brain is never prepared for two languages and then for every word, you gotta switch between languages.

on top of that you sometimes have accents, slang, etc.

dire igloo

night girder

dire igloo
#

I love how we gave up our word for window to the Brits and adapted our own from the Romans

night girder
#

From the time of their earliest attestation, the Germanic varieties are divided into three groups: West, East, and North Germanic. Their exact relation is difficult to determine from the sparse evidence of runic inscriptions.

dire igloo

England has its name from the Anglo-Saxons

languid gulch

languid gulch
night girder
#

We (northern part) speak "Nederlands" - which translates to Dutch. But we also speak "Vlaams" which translates to "Flemish".

But if we say Dutch, then people think of the Netherlands. So Flemish it is.

Down south they speak French or "Waals". In Brussels they speak both.

Somewhere to the SE we have a tiny german speaking part.

dire igloo
languid gulch

night girder

But yeah, there are lots of connection to Spain in Europe.

#

That's why EU (the continent) is kinda fascinating. So many "marks" left by "visitors".

dire igloo
#

And the NL ambassadors arrived in a horse carriage with four horses which was reserved for delegations of independent states (which at the time they were not)

night girder
#

Spain is the reason we exist 🤣 The Netherlands didn't want to leave/epart/revolt against Spain. So we rebelled and left the Netherlands.

dire igloo

howitzer operator

night girder
#

Do I say, thank him for his service?

languid gulch
#

was about to mention, US side 🤣

night girder
#

What company was he in?

#

I only mostly know of D company ofc.

languid gulch
#

oof. can't remember. i know he landed 2 weeks after D-Day

#

this might be an insult, but maybe it exists somewhere in germany if you ever wanted to try it

night girder
#

No.

#

With all these tarrifs hehe

languid gulch
#

ah good point

night girder
#

fucking sucks!

languid gulch
#

also god knows what it's like compared to the local stuff

night girder
#

can't we just go back to the good old days 🤣

languid gulch
#

yes please

night girder
#

There are so many countries with good beer.

languid gulch
#

good beer, good bread

#

throw in something local and fresh

night girder
#

The same that French wine is also a bit "overrated". In the sense you got alternatives from different countries really compteting.

languid gulch
#

i love how so many blind taste tests can't determine what wine is from where

night girder
#

yup, probably the same with beer.

#

You got 💩 beer. And good beer. And some stuff in between 🤣

#

No matter where it is from.

languid gulch
#

unless it's super regional with a blatantly specific taste, yea

#

something like Guinness

night girder
#

Yeah, thats one thing, the local grains can impact it.

#

But with global economy.

#

Yeah, we got a few strong beers here.

languid gulch
#

the only super specific stuff we have here probably wouldn't sell well anywhere else

night girder
#

My favorite one.

languid gulch
#

mainly because of the names

night girder
#

brewed here

languid gulch
#

what a dump

#

😛

night girder
#

hard to get. Low production.

languid gulch
#

horribly outdated, in desperate need of roof repair

night girder
#

Looks clean to me.

#

Ignore the statues 🤣

languid gulch
#

yea, that's just really upsetting from an american viewpoint. wish we had that stuff here

night girder
#

Eh, it comes with a history too ofc.

languid gulch
#

true

night girder
#

Might be the best thing we got out of it 🤣

languid gulch
#

but also from my view, i'm jealous of the greenery

#

we get about 8cm of rain a year on a wet year

night girder
#

Yeah, we got lots of grass. But it's getting harder to maintain, country wide. Lots of years with heat waves. And no water in the ground.

languid gulch
#

this last year killed off a ton of pine & palm trees here

night girder
#

Fire?

languid gulch
#

drought

#

and heat

night girder
#

Ok, yeah, could turn into fire. Good nobody got hurt or lost property.

languid gulch
#

there was a big fire up at the Grand Canyon this year, destroyed the old cabin grounds sadly

#

~100 years old

#

but we're also a big state, canyon's off in the corner

night girder
#

Sucks to hear. I don't think it's going to get any better anytime soon.
Heard recently on a podcast there is +- a 30 year delay with climate change. So the changes we see now are the consequences of 30 years ago.

languid gulch
#

yea, i worry about what we're going to see with the acceleration

night girder
#

It's going to get worse. Because of the 30 year delay.

#

If we stop change. It takes 30 years to catch up.

#

It was regarding why we shouldn't stop our efforts, because there is no quick gain, we have to wait a long time to reap the fruits of our labor.

languid gulch
#

i'm just hoping that we can set up enough renewable to start making atmospheric carbon capture plants

night girder
#

we got so much work to do

#

and at this stage I still believe we also need keep our minds open into investing in transition energy sources (something between fossil -> full green energy).
Like Nuclear.

languid gulch
#

oh definitely

#

ME WANT LFTR

night girder
#

Because I hear a lot of negativity around it lately, but it's really not that black and white.

#

Ideally, yes we should get rid of it. But we can't just go from 0 to 1.

#

I am still jalous of China.

#

Nuclear Fusion plant.

languid gulch
#

i mean, harnessable to the grid fusion is still a ways off

#

but yes, throw everything at the wall and see what sticks

night girder
#

You wont get there if you don't take the first step. Like they did.

languid gulch
#

yup

#

we're getting there tho. quite a few ways to do it

night girder
#

But green energy is only one part of the solution*.

#

We still got to reduce global emmision.

languid gulch
#

i kinda like the canadian one that's like a giant fusion combustion engine

#

oh definitely, it's not just scaling up with renewables, but also scaling down petroleum

night girder
#

you got EV?

languid gulch
#

yup

night girder
#

Happy with it?

languid gulch
#

for what i use it for, it's the best car i've ever had

night girder
#

Was just reading so many negative comments under an article about EV and the rise in prices.

languid gulch
#

i mean, yes, for those people

#

but for me, i feel like i stole it

night girder
#

Well, it's more they believe EV will fail.

#

Because recently, in the Netherlands, the price to charge increased.

languid gulch
#

so long as it's cheaper per mile than petrol/diesel, it wins

night girder
#

But it also just feel they are more emotional than rational.

#

Their arguing there is no transparancy. And no regulation. So people wont switch to EV.

languid gulch
#

the one thing that's really holding people back from buying is the slow charge rate, even from DCFC

#

it needs to build up the distance as fast as filling up with petrol

#

that's really the only way "range anxiety" will go away

#

i have a relative that drives 40km one-way to work every day, and my car would still be able to keep up with overnight charging. but she has 0 interest in an EV

night girder
#

I wonder why.

languid gulch
#

BS "range anxiety"

night girder
#

I think some people use that as an excuse 😛

languid gulch
#

it's almost completely made-up

#

it functionally doesn't exist in >95% of cases

night girder
#

Maybe people don't like change. Or the looks.

#

I do think range might be an issue over here. We don't have recharge points everywhere yet.

languid gulch
#

my EV had some fire issues early on that gave it a bad reputation, but it was solved

night girder
#

So depending on where you go, you might want to prepare beforehand.

languid gulch
#

also there's still a ton of garbage charging cables being sold that'll burn that turn people off

night girder
#

and people cutting them for copper.

#

was on the news 🤣

languid gulch
#

we have people getting electrocuted doing that with street lights

night girder
#

Imagine wanting to go to work and your car isn't charged lol

languid gulch
#

around here we have the stupid massive trucks, and their issue is that it's easy to crawl under with a sawzall and chop out the catalytic converter to sell for cash

night girder
#

Yup

#

Saw it in YT video. Some ...euhm... you know some with a particular color of neck that tunes and drives cars 🤣

#

Amazing dude btw.

languid gulch
#

i'm lucky, my EV "experience" is about as easy as it can be. detached house, closed garage, had enough room on the main panel to add in 2x 240V/60A breakers for it, and short runs for them

night girder
#

Yeah, I mean. It are horror stories.

#

But there must be reason why people don't switch. I have mine. But those are pretty unique.

languid gulch
#

my dad was a bit skeptical

#

until i took him for a ride

#

i didn't even floor it

night girder

Eh, cheaper to pour down I guess.

#

i did say that things don't rust around here

#

i'm always the one driving when i see one of them, but there are 2 VW Things/181s that are near me. one's purple and the other is lime green

languid gulch
#

ok, dumb question time

#

about active USB/hdmi/DP

#

do they make an active "union" adapter for any of those, to be used between 2 passive cables

#

or do the active versions of those cables have something else going on inside them

thin trout
#

a passive cable can't pass on some active signal

languid gulch
#

so what's extra inside an active cable vs passive?

thin trout
#

it depends on the cable, but for max power draw on USB they use an active processor inside of the cable to tell the device that higher currents are supported for power.

They allow communication for things like a phone for example which may want to charge itself to a specific battery % or at different rates

languid gulch
#

does the processor in the cable also amplify whatever signal is going thru it?

thin trout
#

it can do

languid gulch
#

i assume it uses some of that power boost to do that

#

as well as letting that power pass through

thin trout
#

simple processors can use very little power nowadays, but yes

languid gulch
#

got my new vr rig and am a bit weirded out by it

#

hence the questions 🤣

#

the weirdest part is the direct connection is USB-C

#

feels wrong to not be plugging right into my gpu

#

frickin 4090 and not using it for VR gaming

#

it can be wireless, but it has to go thru my router

#

was thinking about using a wacky USB extension thing to give it a bit more distance

pure karma
#

really any usb cable will do as long as it can hold the data transfer rate

#

power will come down to what headset

#

quest 2 will just drain its battery and handle filling the gaps and focus on data

#

something like a index will probably shit the bed

languid gulch
#

quest 3s, 18W

pure karma
#

then yea if its not supplied enough power it will just use its own battery so not much concern there

#

main concern for you will be data

#

and honestly wireless is only about a 100mbit connection so might be worth ditching cable if you can

#

atleast 100 is the default anyway

languid gulch
#

ok dumb question

#

my mobo has wifi 7 on it

#

could i somehow make my pc a hotspot and use it as my "direct connection" to my pc instead of going through my router?

#

router is 5G, and >15m away

languid gulch
#

ok, can confirm that works just fine 🤣

languid gulch
#

i was kinda worried that opening up a hotspot would disable my PC's internet connection for some reason

soft bloom
#

I found an interesting read
On academia press
There's a large report on research used for Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty for nuclear weapons from 1997
Topic of nuclear arsenal is a bit present on politics right now, though I ask not to bring politics here.
Interest rises from the fact that this is international cooperation involving seismology, data gathering and automated analysis. Including for earthquakes. It's not too in depth, but it brings up questions of what magnitude is needed to be detected worldwide for successful functioning of treaty, and what capabilities are present (at the moment), along some other interesting details like how to differentiate explosion from natural earthquake.
It is like almost 30 years old. But, even back then magnitude 4 worldwide wasn't an issue.

Somewhere in the monitor settings there should be option to change from the current "Fit" or whatever to "Scale" or similar.

The button menus.

#

"Scaling" or similar as the setting name.

#

But the exact place and name etc. depend on monitor type, so cannot give more in depth instructions without knowing the monitor model.

twin dew
#

But usually up to four options: One to just spread the image to fill whole area (what you have), one to scale up retaining the aspect ratio until first edges are hit (what you want), one to scale up retaining aspect ratio until whole screen is filled, cutting part off, and 1:1 in pixels, with black bars on all sides in some cases.

twin dew

Two monitors

sharp matrix
#

Its probably what you say, 2560x1440 is the output but the gpu is rendering in 4k, seems like extra work for really nothing, so kind of weird

usually you want the render resolution match the output resolution, which is why i was confused why two would be listed

mental oriole
twin dew
sharp matrix
jagged snow
#

Nope
Its the exact same as display scaling in windows

#

So it's still sending a signal at native resolution to the monitor but text and ui elements are sized like its the lower resolution

#

Because 4k at 27in is very very small

twin dew
#

Programs that are DPI aware get rendered in full resolution.
Programs that aren't DPI aware are lied to about the resolution and the bitmap final render is rescaled up.

#

Where those DPI aware programs rescale everything by the selected ratio themselves.

Not to worried about GPU performance on this system anyhow, essentially any display adapter would work

yep
it allows field to be skipped, or get 'on', 'off' or '' (empty)
while skipped field is logical false, and both 'on' and '' (empty are logical true
while if you try any other input (including 'null'), it tells you that it accepts either on or null
so off isn't documented and behaves objectively wrong
and null is ambiguous since who the fuck new that empty value is still true, but completely omitting is false (default behavior isn't explicitly specified)

Was thinking of replacing the motherboard. But at this point, what does it even matter.

Replaced CPU, PSU, GPU, ...

Hopefully your next PC shouldn't have issues

There will be no next PC. I just dropped shitton money on this crap build.

With completely new parts that is

And if there is a new PC, it will be a prebuilt because I am done with this shit.

night girder

and btw asablic, chat control is back 🙁

visual tree
visual tree
night girder
#

Voluntarily required In the amended proposal, the scanning of chat messages is a voluntary option for providers and facilitators of communication services. At the same time, the new text imposes an obligation on companies to limit risks around child abuse material. Article 4 of the new proposal states that hosting providers and providers of communication services must take 'all reasonable measures' for risk mitigation when they see a risk that their services are being used for online activities related to child abuse. "The mitigation measures will be limited, where possible, to an identifiable part of the service, or to specific users or specific groups or types of users, without compromising the effectiveness of the measure," the amended proposal says.

#

Google translated.

#

If something is required it isn't voluntarily.

#

This formulation is very broad due to terms such as 'where possible' and 'groups or types of users'.

jagged snow
#

Basically looks like "Optional but you take legal liability if you choose not to implement"

night girder
#

Why doesn't this law want to die 🙁

jagged snow
#

Because it's really really good for the people making the rules

twin dew

"But Think Of the Children!"

night girder

I do think of the Children.

jagged snow
#

Lots of control and it's a "think of the children" law

night girder
#

The end justifies the means - logic. What can go wrong.

#

Reminds me of that movie, Equilibrium. Saw it long time ago. But I think everyone has to take pills, to control their emotions, and so there is world peace.
Because everyone is a zombie or something 🤣 The movie also plays with the idea "the end justifies the means".

#

Even if that risk is not too bad, there is still the danger that this broad control can have an oppressive effect on people, their communication and therefore society. Breyer therefore warns that chat control is a **totalitarian **system for mass surveillance. He argues that the new compromise goes further than a previously rejected proposal: from AI-powered monitoring of shared files to full scanning of private messages and metadata as well. The Belgian encryption specialist Bart Preneel of KU Leuven also touches on this expansion to De Morgen.

twin dew
#

Which is why that stuff is coated in that "Think of the children" top layer, while the actual reason is more sinister.

night girder
#

Yeah, but who cares right? Some people in a discord channel ... but main population, I don't think they care. 90% is probably a parent themselves and think it's a good idea.

#

and I think the core of the issue (protecting the children) wont go away, it will find different ways.

#

speaking of which, Australia also banned twitch now for -16 kids.

#

Not sure what is going on down south 🤣

visual tree

Guess our world will eventually turn into 1984 novel....

night girder

Sometimes I think, am I too skeptical? But then I am like; people literal wrote books and made movies about it. So they saw the same potential dangers as I do.

#

Dune for example, in that lore you got a giant fight between computers/AI and everyone else. That's the reason computers are banned in Dune and you wont see em.

#

They use humans genetically modified with dust as "components" so they can make jumps through space.

The whole world is build on gambling. What do you think stocks are 🤣

#

I know some people in here saw some sort of video and are all pised at steam.

#

but I am so fucking confused. Like gambling is going on for about 15 years in games.

#

And now people are pissed because Valve did something to the market? Wtf. What about all the other shit?
Like Genshin Impact or something.

#

The trading cards have been a thing for ever in steam. I don't get where this sudden community wide hate comes from.

#

You literally have a banana game on steam, and the only purposse ... is gambling and selling banana skins.

#

Fornight is build on gambling. Every game that has RNG is using gambling in a way ...

soft bloom
# night girder Probably just me, but those movies really made me think about things. Modern mov...

they are a great source for though and caution, when they present issue correctly.
what I don't like, is when someone with agenda present just one side of question, forcing solution they got paid to promote wnt to see in real world.

game example: The Talos Prinsiple presents both sides of conflict between limiting growth to preserve nature and not repeat old mistakes (of humanity) against embracing new tech that solves survival but comes at great responsibility for messing things up big way

Kids buys a pack of card with random cards hoping for a shinny one. And magic the gathering, yugio, I think all pack card game do this.

And if you want to buy specific cards, I did it for magic the gathering, you can pay a lot of money.

soft bloom
#

there are planty of games and companies that are no involved in gambling, especially letting minors do that.
and there seem to be legal ways to remove gambling, though last I heard even in EU it won't be easy.
lastly, it's a question of whoever pays for those skins to not do that, including vloggers who buy them fora nother 'loot box opening' video

#

though there's always a way to trigger change by letting something rot so hard it annoys too many people and they enforce change. doesn't work with everything though. but smokeless fire has its own danger

soft bloom
# night girder Ok, so you don't want kids to gamble.

actually, I mentioned valve' blind eye on kids gambling as part of 'does end justify the means'
the end: valve gets lots of money
means: they implemented gambling and don't monitor who does that, including allowing third party sites to profit on their system
somehow, you were talking about being skeptical, yet defended valve's stance 🙂

#

though reallife recent example that is much closer to government enforing policies 'to keep public order' is with ID verification before accessing websites.
fear is always that someone with power will abuse system. and this is where trust in system comes at play, defining reception by public, before anyone with pwoer could begin abuse.

#

if public doesn't trust government - there will be problems... and even good policies won't function as good as they could.
and until people at large are running the state, it will remain a lever

night girder
#

Being skeptical doesn't mean I am not allowed to disagree with opinions.

#

Meanwhile Ubisoft is making deals with Tencent and nobody is batting an eye. (Todays news, they are very close).

It feels like a targetted attack on Valve atm. While putting up blinders to all the rest of the gaming 💩 companies.

soft bloom
night girder
#

EA being sold. Nobody gives a fuck.

#

But Valve, ooh how dare you mess with the market and CS:GO skins.

soft bloom
#

and ubisoft is just not something I care about. don;t play their games, don't expect anything. best they did was nurtured author of E33

night girder
#

It more reads to me as this; a bunch of people were investing in skins. Then the market collapsed. And then they blame it on Valve.

night girder
#

If I put my money into stock, and that company collapses, and I am mad. I shouldn't have invested.

#

It's very silly that a bunch of gamblers, are blaming Valve ... for gambling mechanics.

#

The most I sold a skin for was 0.03 euro cents. Because that's the lowest.

#

And the highest I sold it for was 0.01 euro cents. So I lose jack shit. Maybe that's why I am not bothered by it.

night girder
#

It's like a junky being mad at their dealer for dealing drugs.

soft bloom
#

oh no I am out of the news stream

#

valve is on my mind only because I saw steam machine recently.

night girder
#

I know I am kinda defending Valve, which I don't want too, because it's a million/billion/trillion dollar company.
But on the other hand, I am happy as a gamer that we have something like Valve. Hard to describe. Maybe it's a bit nostalgia mixed in.

soft bloom
soft bloom
night girder

I am very old school.

#

I want to give my money for a game. Install it and never have to pay again for anything.

#

But sadly, that's not a reality.

And nobody can actually say if gaming would be sustainable without all the micro transactions. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten the games we have now.
Maybe a few companies went bankrupt. Maybe we were better off? Hard to tell.

night girder

maybe, someone fucked up in history, to just allow this shit to happen in the first place.
Buying products, connecting it to one service. That service gone? All products gone.
Maybe we should have sticked with just downloading games straight from the website of who ever made the game? Or discs.

languid gulch
#

maybe

#

i still wouldn't mind if someone started selling full fat games on USBs

night girder
#

Like you pay, you get physical access to that game forever on a disc or other format.

If that was the case, steam wouldn't be a monopoly I think.

languid gulch

for solo games, i've made copies onto a separate drive so if something goes splat i can still play it

it's just because they have just a gigantic library of games to offer, they can do whatever they want.

soft bloom

Yes.

I bought age of empire 2 on disc.

#

I updated it through the internet.

soft bloom
#

I think there should be github for games with ability to download any revision even if it doesn't work with online services.
oh wait, that sounds liek steam... except it doesn't provide older versions without developers giving beta codes

#

there always will besomeone who comes in and tries to centralize something

#

valve was great at being also the first to do that at large scale and promote that model with good games

night girder
#

I hate legal jargon.

#

As between you and us, you own all rights, other than rights in the Licensed Technology, in the Products you develop under this Agreement, and we own all title, ownership rights, and intellectual property rights in the Licensed Technology.

#

I own all rights. Nice.

#

other than Licensed Technology, in the products you develop under this agreement? WTF? 🤣

#

we own all title, ownership rights, and intellectual property rights in the Licensed Technology.

#

So if I am not mistaken. The licensed technology is UE5 (the engine itself).

languid gulch
#

which i think is one of those "you can make it on our engine, but unless we approve it, you can't sell it"

soft bloom
#

I honestly don't think that games should increase in cost or have transactions.
Free to play is a case where mass sort of benefit from a couple whales.
subscription is fair and square, but there's always a question of if developers are keeping wuality over time
one-time payment is not viable for online games really, they always find a way to ask for more. or that's pyramid scheme where ever ending influx of new players keeps it alive.

night girder
#

No, I don't think so Cuyar. But I am not sure either.

languid gulch
#

might want to look into it before getting too far if you plan on selling it
