it only had so many hours left in it tho for sure heh

it's been a decade since that thing has been turned on... at least. I might plug it in and it's dead for all i know

#

I just miss the big box era of PC games... :/

Can we get big box Satisfactory? 😄

man now I'm thinking about it... could have some cool stuff in there like a map, silly little wrench keychain.... FICSIT ID badge...

That's still all an OS is

And at the time the entirety of the linux kernal was under 1k lines as well

I really do think that modern software is very unneccecarily overcomplicated

thats kind of inevitable when the only requirement for code is that it works

Just wanted to share this:
My friend has a brother from another country, he wanted to build a PC, and his brother put a list for him:
Motherboard – Gigabyte Z790 D AX ATX LGA1700
RAM – Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB (2 × 16GB) DDR5-6000 CL36
Graphics Card – MSI VENTUS 2X OC GeForce RTX 5070 12GB
CPU – Intel Core i5-14600KF 3.5 GHz 14-Core
SSD – Western Digital Black SN770 2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe
PSU – MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 II 850W 80+ Gold Fully Modular
CPU Cooler – Corsair NAUTILUS 360 RS ARGB 74.37 CFM Liquid
Case – Corsair 3500X ARGB ATX Mid Tower

I am going to change this because when I first saw his motherboard that costs 500 EUROS i knew he was fucking off the charts with affordability...

I approve of the: RAM, GPU, and... idk maybe thats it.

If anyone wants to assist with me putting a list together for him please DM me and when I make a final list I will post it here and in their DM's

#

Yes. Im serbian and these prices are insane.

why use an intel

also would avoid Intel 13. or 14. Gen in general

pure karma
#

motherboard prices just suck in general

#

dead platform boards are still going for over 300$ regularly and most are used or broken

#

so its not even just the new boards

night girder
#

the AM5 board I am eying is 150 euro 😒 Still pricey.

languid gulch
#

i think cheap mobos ended with am4

night girder
#

Yes

#

Some knowledgeable people say it's because AM5 motherboards got more complex.

#

But I don't know if that's 100% true.

glossy glacier
#

probably not wrong, pcie5, ddr5, usb4, etc. need better build quality
but also not the whole picture

languid gulch

same bullshit around gpus

#

it's just greed. can't have a pc without a mobo

languid gulch
#

fucking hilarious that intel's going back to 2020

pure karma
#

yea the rebranding was the final nail of many

#

im not going to relearn branding when the existing one is perfectly fine if you spend even 2 seconds to understand it

and the new one makes no sense anyway

What is the best NVMe 2TB to get?

What one do I get for my friend in the end?

pure karma
#

neither of the 5060's because there 8GB

#

the 5070 is the best of the choices although expensive obviously and the 4060 is ok at best

warm blade
pure karma

yea but the 5070 is 12GB

Also this one i forgot to post cuz i accidentally posted 2x 5060's

Yeah i might get the 5070 or else idk

Wdym by "it"?

oh i think it recognises only formal ways of talking

so saying "au brt nmg" (Damn bro I can't in Serbian) it will get the translate to just lag and die

#

i'm just glad my cpu has an igpu

been like 7 years since i had that as a backup

same even if it has caused me more issues than it has solved its still very nice to have

languid gulch
#

i do have a 1660, RX460, RX560, and a GT610 in storage

#

my upgrade path over time has been kinda wild

amd A10 APU, 1700X, 5600X, 9800X3D

#

RX560, 1660, 6600XT, 6800XT, 4090

pure karma
#

my upgrade path has been very normal in terms of desktops

#

7700K, 10700F, 13700K

#

1070, 1660S, 4070ti

languid gulch
#

i'm still most proud of the A10 to 1700X jump. got it for $150, and it was in a Dell with a hilariously locked down bios

#

yea but i started on AM4, so i was kinda screwed there

#

that was legit one of those things to consider back then, go with AMD for the cost & decent performance, but no igpu

#

or go with intel for the igpu and reliability

#

12th gen is the last one i'd trust

pure karma
#

i mean 13th gen has been stable for me but its definitely a gamble on your motherboard and less the cpu it seems

languid gulch
#

oh i have 0 trust in 13th or 14th gen, or the new core ultra

#

not to mention the outright fucking stupid power consumption on intel

pure karma
#

yea the e-cores will do that if you dont disable them

#

because believe it or not having more than half your cores drawing power to achieve nothing is not exactly very power efficient

languid gulch
#

i'm shocked

pure karma
#

i literally brute forced them off on my laptop and the performance doubled

#

off of pure thermal and power efficiency gain

#

not to mention the 3X in battery life

those pilots when they hit the deck actually gun it again in case they miss that hook

no hook no land

b-2 is meant to just keep flying and refuel in the air heh

#

it has a virtually limitless range as long as it has supply aircraft to refuel it

and they give pilots amphetamines... so they can go for at least a few days

the wright brothers would see that thing and be like what the...

ARC b580 is a solid card, but I don't know if the drivers are stable enough for your average gamer.
They are no longer "nerds only" though

jagged snow
#

Oh they're more than stable

#

I have several friends firsthand that have purchased them as entry level cards for non-techie gamers and had stellar experiences

#

They are flat out the best sub-300 dollar gpu we've had in 5+ years at least

#

Honestly, I don't think we've had an offering this competative since the 1660 series

#

They more or less keep up with the rtx5060 at a significantly lower price

#

And performance wise, the 3060, 4060, rx6600, rx7600 are all a joke in comparison

#

Newegg has $250usd b580 with a 70 dollar game included in stock right now

#

That is cheaper than a used 3060 goes for on ebay at the moment

There legitimately has not been a better buy in gaming for several generations int hat price bracket

The number of fans has little meaning

#

I'd say go for an RX 9060 or B580 over a 5060
RX 9070 over 5070

twin dew
#

Also, 5000-series Nvidias still doesn't have stable drivers...

#

Also, are you sure you aren't looking at prices for 9070 XT, and not 9070 non-XT?

night girder
#

9070 with two fans?

#

even the lolal non XT I find here are 3.

night girder
#

Curious; anyone in here ever exeperienced a PSU going unstable after 4-5 days? Is that technically possible?

#

Because I am trying to think, what part of the PSU, can get "unstable" and cause an issue after a few days. If that's somethign that could happen.

twin dew
night girder
#

Also I get this weird error when I try to look into my WHEA logger after a crash.

#

And then when I restart, the WHEA logger is empty showing 0 entries. FFS Microsoft.

twin dew
night girder
#

Event viewer closes. I open WHEA logging. It's empty.

#

So there is a chance that something gets logged in WHEA, but even viewer craps out and deletes it on restart.

#

"unload snap-in" ...

twin dew
#

Microsoft Management Console.

#

That naming has been there since probably Windows NT 4, possibly NT 3.5

#

So before Plugin was common term.

#

So in more common parlance:
"Plugin crashed, do you want to unload the plugin and continue with the program, or close the whole program?"

night girder
#

🤨

#

It always happens when I click whea logging at startup of eventviewer.

#

Fuck it, it's still a Microsoft product. What can I expect.

twin dew
#

Which then tells that something is wrong with the config for that view, or the base data file that contains the WHEA-logger logs.

night girder
#

at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.Internal.SnapInMessagePumpProxy.OnThreadException(Object sender, ThreadExceptionEventArgs e)
at System.Windows.Forms.Application.ThreadContext.OnThreadException(Exception t)
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.InvokeMarshaledCallbacks()
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WndProc(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

#

Unhandled exception.

twin dew
#

My main PC Windows for example seems to have 402 different event log data files.
In %SystemRoot%\System32\winevt\Logs

night girder
#

I got 366 😄

twin dew
#

But if that Event Viewer doesn't crash when selecting System, then it is the View settings that are broken and you would need to delete that WHEA-Logger view, and recreate it.

night girder
#

🤦‍♀️

twin dew
#

As most likely cause.

night girder
#

Nah it works. But no clue if it deletes entries or not.

#

But based on your explanation it shouldn't.

#

Since it's just unloading a "plugin".

twin dew
#

No, it doesn't delete entries.
That WHEA-Logger is just View, set of selection commands on what to show from the logs.

#

If you remember, we just selected that it will show log entries from that specific source, as easy access view, like views in DB use.
They aren't tables, they don't contain data, they just select data from tables for viewing with presets.

night girder
#

So a new idea I had, yesterday, I was listening to the ticking sound getting worse and worse. And then bam, I had a crash. But I am still not 100% if it's PSU, motherboard or CPU or a fan ticking. I suspect CPU/Mobo/PSU. Then at one point it really sounded like it was comming from PSU, and that would explain why I didn't get any WHEA logging.

#

I tried hitting on the case a few times, that helps for fans ticking noises, didn't help 🤣

#

So, I am afraid I have to take PSU outside case to be sure if that's the cause. Of the ticking sound. After 4-5 days of running 24/7.

Windows 11 update doesn't seem at fault like I expected.

Tweakers thinks it's heat that caused the SSD's to shut down. If that happens during a write, it can cause issues.

Some from heat, some from being drives with preproduction firmwares provided by AMD to reviewers with X570 motherboards and never updated.

Mostly we are currently at 8 bit per color, 24 bit total.

Didn't understand the morning one either.

A bit silly that Microsoft External Staff, is ignoring official Microsoft statements.

They should remove the "microsoft external staff" all together. And just call em. I don't know. Users like the rest of us. 🤣

But that staff then has no contact with MS people.

#

But as no-one can complain that they cannot do the job they seem to be expected to do, that doesn't matter to MS.

Or the companies they actually work for either.

Because it's likelely the windows update had nothing to do with it?

I mentioned it before; likely cause they think is heat.

#

And also sounds like a very plausible reason if you think about hot these summers are getting in some places.

#
  • People update, SSD overheats, shuts down. If lucky all good and you restart. If unlucky some errors during IO operations.
  • J2C was using old ass bios, and likely old bios drivers are also not helping.
twin dew
#

Not that old old, but it was special "crap, something is broken for reviewer, lets bash quick fix to that issue and send it direct".

night girder
#

But people like to shit on Microsoft, so I get it. But to me it still sounds a bit weird windows update causes these issues. And the best paper I read so far, said it was heat.
And so far, I haven't seen anything better as investigation.

twin dew
#

And it has other stuff broken during that.

#

That was known and fixed in next actual stable BIOS.

night girder
#

But the moment somebody can proof without a doubt, that the specific windows update 100% kills SSD's, then I accept it.

jagged snow
night girder
#

Cool.

#

This is what researchers see. Right before SSD fail. Going from 76 degrees to 0 and then bam SSD goes out.

jagged snow
#

Yeah, to be clear

#

Not saying I disagree

#

I was just saying it was fascinating to me that SSDs were getting that hot

twin dew
#

During summer, the hotter of my 980 Pros with MB heatsinks on them hit 75+C when system was loaded in games.
Got heated by GPU.

night girder
#

My hardware, was 100% hotter during the summer.

#

My room temperature was 35-40. Now it's 20.

jagged snow
#

That makes sense, especially since the EU is so allergic to AC

night girder
#

And installing windows update, lot of IO operations ... I don't know. It makes sense.

twin dew
#

Right now that same drive is 51C while gaming.

#

Cooler one is 43C

jagged snow
#

Yeah, that 58C number for me was during a game update

#

With 4.2Gbps reported write throughput

night girder
#

It's either accepting that. Or the general "Windows update did it" with 0 proof.

jagged snow
#

Again

#

I believe the heat argument

#

I'm just saying that it seems like there are some design issues there on some of the drives, probably coupled with poor m.2 positioning on the motherboard and bad case airflow, especially if it's right behind the gpu backplate like many are

night girder
#

Ah, sorry. It's just that in so many communities I still see this "windows update kills ssd" stuff going around.
Somebody was updating a game on steam, saw 100% activity on their disk, panicked and asked for help.
The help they got was; "Ah, yeah, windows update fucked your SSD".

jagged snow
#

That's super frustrating

twin dew
#

Lot of people who think that CPU, GPU, Disk etc. at 100% usage is somehow dangerous or that something is broken when that happens...

night girder
#

but I think they think 100% activity = 100% write.

jagged snow
night girder
#

Doesn';t it just mean the disk is active for 100%, no downtime? Or does it relate to IO.

#

This was one of their pictures.

twin dew
jagged snow
#

It's also like how 100% cpu doesn't even mean that your chip can't go faster

Basically that that average response time/latency has started to rise significantly.

#

Ok, so my second scraping script. Is more robust than REST calls. And quicker. And I don't get gated. And it's using a browser 🤣

#

They can't stop me now. Mhuahaha.

#

Also funny, like they use ID's for all these knowledges.

#

And you have id's between 0-100. Then it jumps to 500. Then to 1000. Then no id's. Untill you hit around 14000.

#

Fix;

while rotating_id <= 20000 🤣

mental oriole
#

wtf

#

why are ids integers

#

and not guids

night girder
#

No, why are the id's all over the place 🤣

#

Like if I have game, and I add knowledge, and I give it id's.

#

Why make jumps?

mental oriole
#

what are you scraping either way?

night girder
#

some game lore stuff, pretty innocent.

mental oriole
#

At least that would be my guess

night girder
#

Maybe. It's weird. because even the newest patch of this week, added new content. But the id's just jump.

#

As if a developer just guesstimates. "Mhm, I think we stop at 5000 last time. Let's start this new lore/knowledge at id 10000 to be sure". hehe

mental oriole
#

No idea, unless the site shares ids among other games but they're tied to some base path

night girder
#

So, there are two sites that do the same thing. And both have same id for same knowledge entries.

So either they scrape eachother. Or it's such in the game files.

mental oriole
#

Then gaps could be considered "normal" but I'm still gonna say a range of 10000 is strange

#

Ye ids from in game stuff could be related

night girder
#

So I ran my script on another website yesterday.

#

I get 11K entries. But I had a loop of 20K.

#

so 9K is just missing 🤣

#

Where there is the timeout, that's missing knowledge.

mental oriole
#

Idk 🙂

night girder
#

I call it timeout, because script waits for DOM element, if it's not there in x time (that I set) move on and assume page isn't loading.

#

When manually visiting the pages, I can confirm there is nothing there.

mental oriole

night girder
mental oriole

night girder

So, the website says; scrape me. Right?

#

I though robots.txt was used by websites to tell "robots" (scripts) what they can access and can't.

mental oriole
#

I have no idea how robots.txt "work"

#

I'm not a webdev hehe

night girder

night girder

I played the demo. I had no issues?

thin trout

I think it was 70fps on overclocked zen5 x3d + 5090 in one place. Ran it myself like 5x on different settings

night girder
#

I think that one was a bit misleading to some people.

thin trout
#

oh not demo sorry

#

the benchmark that they put out before launch - it had a handful of scenes

#

and some performed okay, others extremely badly. Both CPU and GPU performance was poor, but the CPU performance stuck out the most. It was also just visually awful both in general and for its performance level

night girder
#

saw a YT video (already forgot from who) that said a gaming company admitted they should focus on low end PC's.

#

But... eh just words for now (if it's true).

thin trout
#

Funny how the games with the biggest scope and most revolutionary features mostly work on an r5 5600 (or even 3600) but some recycled trash comes out and a 9800x3d is dipping and stuttering all over.

Haha, Battlefield 6 🤣 They already preparing.

night girder

Haha, so funny. They need money 😄

thin trout
night girder
#

and call of duty fucked it up by adding rick and morty skins to the game.

thin trout
#

(by fine: i mean, DDA on a 2060 runs faster than BL4 on a 5060)

night girder
#

so the market (FPS) is wide open for BF6,.

verbal raft
#

OR a supper heavy mode (PT)

thin trout
#

Point is, it's one more tool in the box which can be horrifically misused

#

BF6 guys basically decided that they want to target lower end hardware than a 2060, or achieve very high performance even on a 2060, and they don't want to develop 2 different light/shadows/reflection models - so they just went zero RT

night girder
thin trout
#

and it's working well for them

but DDA approach of configurable RT-only works too.

What i don't think is gonna hang around for much longer is the "this game can do raster or RT" stuff. People will increasingly pick one or the other, and it will tend to be RT i think.

night girder
#

What do people want? Whining about optimization. Then developer is responsible and skip x features to focus on performance. Then people bitching about features missing?

thin trout
#

The key is optionality

#

you don't have to crank DDA so that it hurts a 5090. But you can, so both parties are satisfied

night girder
#

Or, you ship a game that works for low ends.

thin trout
#

with BL4, the game MUST have fps dips on the best CPU's and run trash on lower end ones. You have no choice, the menu doesn't really change it and nobody is happy.

If it ran badly on "extreme" and ran well on other settings then people wouldn't complain

night girder
#

And gradually release features for high end after release?

#

I think it's very hard for developers to please everyone (low-end, mid-end, high-end AND investors that want the game out of the door so it stops costing money and starts making money).

thin trout
#

for sure

#

some are better than others though 😄

verbal raft
night girder
thin trout

Developers, companies. Gearbox CEO is like a drunk guy with a microphone

#

Satisfactory is the showpiece for UE5 performance and scope

night girder

verbal raft
thin trout
night girder
#

And then companies with money and a lot of resources, struggle to put out something decent. I know this one is beaten to death in this channel, but ... greed?

twin dew
#

But does for example use Nanite right, which is thing that most UE5 get wrong.

night girder
#

Or something structural wrong in big companies.

#

The way teams etc are structured. The managers etc.

verbal raft
mental oriole
verbal raft
#

Pretty much only cliffs

mental oriole
#

I see it everywhere.

night girder
twin dew
# verbal raft Only super sparingly tho

But point is that lot of UE5 games have the ultra-super-high definition raw artist assets in the game, and try to use Nanite to downgrade even to full-LOD models.
When the documentation says that you must downgrade the artist assets manually to the highest LOD version, and let Nanite handle the rest.

#

Even Satisfactory had to downgrade some of the terrain for Nanite, as some parts were just too high-poly as baseline full detail LOD.

verbal raft
mental oriole
#

Probably not, maybe some, but idk.

thin trout
#

For dev, i would say: Look at performance at the start of your project, not the end. Monitor with every major change. If it falls off a cliff, figure out why and when/if that will be fixable, and consider reverting or approaching in a different way.

A lot of these guys go neck deep into nanite, lumen etc, basically finish the game, and then look back and go "..oh shit".

#

and at that point the terrible decisions are locked in and you'd have to rip out and repave half the game

night girder
#

Let's not forget. Developers might know. But people above them put pressure/time restrictions on them.

twin dew
#

Basically Nanite on PR speak was "it handles LODs for you".
When the actual documentation says, it handles generating lower LOD versions from the classic full-LOD game models at runtime, not the artist assets.

#

So when before you had to create 4-10 different LODs manually, from that full artist model, now you only have to create one.
But lot of companies took that as just using that artist version and not creating even that single game version.

night girder
#

read the documentation hehe

mental oriole
#

rtfm hehe

twin dew
#

And Nanite isn't made to handle that kind of detail at all, or downgrade the models by 100+x polygon count.

night girder
#

did you tell CSS that? 😛

twin dew
#

Like I said, in some of the Nanite videos CSS people told that Epic recommended them downgrade some of the terrain models, as they were too high polygon count before.

Using some advanced profiling tools, it’s clear that most models are created as ultra-high-detail assets, with millions of vertices per model.
So BL4 did this too...

Ok, to start, I just wanted to investigate performance using a Steam Family copy of the game to see why even a 5090 series GPU seems to struggle. I did a bunch of research by experimenting with .ini settings and toggles. The Problem This game is extremely reliant on Nanite, Lumen, and practically all of the upscaling tech available in the UE5 re...

night girder
#

Risk of Rain laughing at them 😄

twin dew
#

This is currently why Nanite is such a bottleneck: the sheer vertex count the engine has to process per frame is enormous,

night girder
#

This aged well.

#

100% confidence in the game and development trajectory 🤣

twin dew
#

So BL4 too went with just using those ultra-high detail graphical artist raw models direct in the game...

night girder
#

Haha, and he is a Elon fan 🤣 I fucking knew it.

#

Yeah, not touching Borderlands 4. They lost me with the Tiny Tina stuff.

#

Also, for the next 5-10 years, are we just going to accept all this "It's UE5 fault" bullshit?

#

Because if so, I am going for a winter sleep and wait for UE6.

#

There is only so much hot potato shuffling I can handle.

dire igloo
night girder
twin dew
#

And when the game is shown in basic profiling to have huge optimization issues, by using engine features wrong.

night girder
#

It's out fault we don't like to spend 80 dollars on a game that barely runs.

#

It's our fault the game barely runs. It's also our fault they can't develop a decent game. All our fault. Feels terrible.

But when the low end performance is crap because of doing stupid unoptimized stuff is real.

dire igloo

I know it is

twin dew
#

Just addition to my previous message.

#

Not reply to yours.

dire igloo
#

Ah ok

#

Get fucked by community notes

twin dew
#

I personally would expect minimum HW give 30 or 60 FPS at full-HD at lowest preset., without upscaling etc.
And recommended to give 60 FPS at Full-HD or QHD with Medium or High equivalent preset, without upscaling etc.

#

But my expectations are so out of whack compared to both game companies and most gamers today.

#

The time of hasty console ports where even max settings didn't even tickle then current gen PCs drove the expectations completely out of whack.

#

For most people.

dire igloo
#

The days of 60 fps being the default refresh rate on a gaming setup's monitor are long gone

twin dew
#

But I still see 60 FPS as the "minimum acceptable FPS".

dire igloo
#

Yup. Minimum acceptable.
Nothing I ever wanna see as "recommended" unless it's 4K

#

Any dev that makes a decently fast paced game and recommends 60fps for it can fuck themselves

#

And Borderlands is definitely fast paced

twin dew
#

To me: "Minimum specs" is "Can run the game somewhat playably with shittiest settings".
And "Recommended" is "Can run the game actually playably with usable settings".

#

Where classically that Medium was the actual usable graphics, and going above was tiny bit of difference with large performance penalties.

#

And then for example High and Ultra above that "default" Medium.

dire igloo
#

Minimum: game runs in some way or form
Recommended: game looks nice and performs well

twin dew
#

But the Xbox 360 / PS2/PS3 game port times led to the expectation among PC players that "Recommended" = everything maxed at high FPS.

dire igloo
#

Yeah, that's dumb

twin dew
#

When today game devs have stopped making actual "Low" settings and presets in most games.

dire igloo
#

But I absolutely loved the 2020 time of devs including preset, resolution and fps in the recommendations

twin dew
#

There should be visible differences between the preset levels, without having to zoom in etc.

dire igloo
#

"this is what you'll need for medium settings at FHD to run with 60fps"

twin dew
#

When IMHO those should be that there is Extra Low for that minimum, with absolute crap graphics.
Then Low, then Medium which is the design target.
And then 2-3 higher presets where the second highest is supposed to run at best HW available at 60 FPS or so, and highest is for future, going for those tiny bits of visual improvements that can be gained with large amounts of extra processing power.

#

And that that Recommended spec targets that Medium preset at then current normal resolution etc.

dire igloo
#

If medium actually looks good, sure

#

Lowest
Lower
Default
Higher
Highest

#

ezpz, zero misunderstanding

#

Make game run good at default, make lower and lowest give noticable fps uplifts

twin dew
#

That was why I said it to be the design target.
That during most of the dev, only that Extra Low and Medium should be cared about for most part, with the artist models and textures of course need to be made to accommodate the higher ones.
And then near end, the other presets added.

twin dew
dire igloo
#

idk when it switched tho
I remember older titles where medium looked like shit and I had to choose between nice graphics or good fps

#

Or settings that are off-high-ultra

#

While also strongly improving fidelity

#

On the other hand, RT should be off by default and only included for higher and up

#

But make it smth like
disabled (default) - enabled - highest

twin dew
#

BL4 only has software or hardware Lumen as options.

dire igloo
#

Adjust the wording for those kinds of shenanigans to tell you "yo, you don't need this to look good"

twin dew
#

No prebaked lighting.

dire igloo
#

Yeesh

dire igloo
#

I want my BL3 release criticism back when it was only "annoying antagonists, storytelling feels lazy" and not "go rent some supercomputer time if you wanna play this"

twin dew
#

That Lumen only I do understand in a way.
As doing both RT and classic lighting would have made the work on that side double to quadruple to include the classic lighting.

And light software Lumen in the end isn't that expensive on performance anymore, even when it will look worse than prebaked classic lighting, but then scale with just scalability tweaks to the good visuals.

#

Without extra works beside selecting the scalability values.
