And then 8500G would give about same performance on IGP side, and 8600G would give about double.
And that 7600X without dGPU would give about same as the AM5 numbers I gave.

Yeah, but anyways, going even with just 1x8GB at start would be ok start.
Then add second identical stick once you can.
Going with 1x16GB and then adding second identical stick would be better.

yea, there is such a thing as going too cheap

That 8GB of RAM+VRAM will cause issues as save grows of course, so 1x16GB or 2x8GB allows to run for longer before problems from that.
With 2x8GB giving about 180% RAM bandwidth compared to 1x 16GB, but 90% of 2x16GB.

Still contains that cooler, yes, that is better than the stock one, but stock one does work, just noisy at load.
MB might limit to using 120W TDP max CPUs, but that does include 7800X3D and 9800X3D, at least without top-down cooler like the stock AMD one.
Officially supports all up to 170W TDP, but the VRM might not actually allow running those at full load.
Gigabyte has 4 different revisions of the "same" MB, not going to check for differences.

SSDs are always up for debate, but in this case even cheapest QLC is usable, even when they aren't good.
Would need to look lot closer to see what would be good deal right now.

Case is at least ok, again, would need to closer look and cases are lot about personal preference.
And still that point that you can run without case if no free pets.

PSU is almost certainly crap, but will work for at least a time.
There was that tier list posted earlier to help choosing PSU.
And that 450W and even much lower is ok without dGPU, but that 450W would limit dGPU selection later.

#

Large enough MB revision differences that they have separate product pages, for small production changes they are shared, when actual specs don't change.

#

Ok, on the actual spec listing only difference is higher RAM speeds on newer revisions.

#

But the exact selections should be done inside few days of the actual buy anyways.

proud aspen
#

Actual selection, im presuming, will bring it up by like 20-30eur but that should work fine

willow pike

Better MB.
SSD is HMB with TLC-NAND with either Phison E13 or SM2263XT controller, so ok IMHO.

55e for 650W Adata XPG Pylon.

B- tier stuff starts at 80e.

YouTube marketing is wild

#

"Try nicotine pouches for 10 days for free and then we'll give you a bunch more at a discount"

#

And it's framed as a "challenge"

charred relic
#

That is... so incredibly brain dead

#

And also a disgusting move for somebody to even market that for a company... If you aren't already addicted to nicotine just avoid it like the plague, trust me.

jagged snow
#

Yep

charred relic
#

For that matter nicotine itself isn't even really dangerous, it's on par with caffeine and in fact both are similar in other ways.

#

But most methods used to get the nictotine have proven to be very problematic.

#

smoking tobacco being extremely bad... but orally has caused mouth cancers

jagged snow
#

Yeah

charred relic
#

But yeah nicotine on it's own isn't even incredibly addictive... about like caffine

#

In tobacco though there are other compounds that increase it's addictiveness

#

an MAIO

#

Combine them and it's now super super addictive

jagged snow
#

Caffine is also quite addictive in the right circumstances (also gets more so when combined with other compounds)

from caffeine level to heroin level heh

jagged snow
#

Fun

charred relic
#

yeah

#

so far vaping it is the safest

#

i mean that method has been used to get meds into lungs for ages with no problems

#

Problem is ultimately it's just a monkey sink, you don't relaly get anything from it

#

If you need a stimulant caffine is far more convenient

jagged snow
#

And it's also still far from safe

charred relic
#

I must say I do enjoy a nice cigar from time to time... but the prices are so high these days

#

I don't smoke gas station bullshit heh

jagged snow
#

And vape is essentially unregulated and has problems with dangerous cheaply produced products

#

Now I'm getting advertised an investment app that automatically mirrors politicians stock moves snuttsGood

charred relic
#

The manufacturers here have been mostly fine

#

There was one company that had a big issue because they were using titanium dioxide as a coloring to give it a milky white appearance

#

and uhhh yeah shouldn't be inhaling that...ever

#

Wet and vaporized it might even be fine problem is that hasn't been studied and we already know just breathing it in is very bad

jagged snow
#

Yeahh

charred relic
#

The real question mark is the flavorings honestly

#

the glycol bases have been used for that same thing for decades

#

And as long as your kanthal isn't overheating, which is normally shouldn't, you won't be offgassing metals from the coil

#

most resistive wire used goes from totally safe to throwing out some pretty nasty gasses just chock full of metal atoms

#

past a certain temp

#

That's why that 2009 FDA study is worthless... they were testing "dry hit" conditions. I'd expect the exact result they got. Nobody sits there puffing on their vape 1000 time back to back to back...

languid gulch

languid gulch
#

i'm not a smoker or vaper, i had to read

#

all i know is i fucking hate both

charred relic
#

and if the wire does get too hot it CAN offgass... metals

#

but that rarely ever happens espeically in current year with the stuff they use now

#

also you will hit a dry vape ONCE... trust me

#

you won't hit again until you're sure it's wet because it hurts the back of your throat man

languid gulch
#

not a vaper, so 0 issues there

charred relic
#

and it tastes disgusting

#

like a burned atomizer tastes worse than a cigarette lol

#

way way worse

#

Even back when the tech was terrible I had maybe... 3 bad dry hits ever

#

Some stuff now it's virtually impossible to happen because it's temp controlled, as soon as the temp start to shoot up it'll just lower the power or shut off entirely

#

But just like the pouches or anything else if somebody isn't hooked on it already just avoid it, there's nothing good to be gained.

#

100% safe or not doesn't even really matter, it's just going to waste money heh

If you use any of these NPM packages. You might be f'cked.

#

www.aikido.dev/blog/npm-debug-and-chalk-packages-compromised

#

The packages were updated to contain a piece of code that would be executed on the client of a website, which silently intercepts crypto and web3 activity in the browser, manipulates wallet interactions, and rewrites payment destinations so that funds and approvals are redirected to attacker-controlled accounts without any obvious signs to the user.

jagged snow
#

Oh that's great
The concern with those isn't so much me using them directly as them being somewhere way down my dep tree

proud aspen
twin dew
#

That is that 9900X that is bad buy for gaming, and somewhat bad buy for work.

#

9800X3D for gaming, 9950X for CPU intensive multithreaded work, 9950X3D for both.

night girder
twin dew

Probably another dreaming list.

proud aspen
night girder

proud aspen

but other than the cpu?

twin dew

proud aspen
twin dew

Point is that for gaming system, you want 9800X3D, not the dual-CCD parts.
And for actual work, the extra 4 cores on the 9950X(3D) pay themselves back pretty quickly, so no reason to use 9900X(3D).

night girder
#

Who uses MiB tired_jace

charred relic
#

I see it quite a bit...

twin dew
#

The official power of two units?

#

Should be used at this time everywhere with bytes.

proud aspen
night girder
#

ffs. Just use GB as every normal human.

twin dew
#

GiB then.

night girder
proud aspen
charred relic
#

See now it's a matter of perspective

night girder
#

Not GiB. GB.

twin dew
#

And that first would be weird as GiB.

charred relic
#

you're the unusual human to them ๐Ÿ™‚

night girder
#

Not Gigibyte, Gigabyte.

#

or Gigabit. Gigibit.

twin dew
#

GB can mean power of 10, or power of 2 at this time.

#

And when the actual stuff is mostly power of two where Bytes are used.

proud aspen
twin dew
#

So GiB would be the right unit.

night girder
#

seems subjective opinion.

proud aspen
proud aspen
night girder
#

Look it's everywhere. It's all I am saying.

#

Then suddenly somewhere starts throwing GiB's, MiB's at me. It is confusing ๐Ÿ˜„

twin dew
night girder
#

Windows can't be wrong.

proud aspen
charred relic
#

You were going to come across it sooner or later

charred relic
#

Surprising it took so long really...

twin dew
#

Officially GB would be 1000000000 Bytes.
While GiB is 1073741824 Bytes.

charred relic
#

Somebody who is used to mibi will tend to use that..

night girder
#

This is just part of them. Aren't we going a bit too crazy here?

twin dew
#

Gi is 2^30.
G is 10^9.

proud aspen
twin dew
#

No, had to calculate.

proud aspen
#

phew

charred relic
#

I ran something once that used that system almost exclusevily, I just found it annoying but that's because t's not what I use and i had to figure out what it equated to

twin dew
#

Basically computer people started to use the closest SI prefixes for power of 10:s for computer stuff with power of 2:s.
Until HDD manufacturers started to use power of 10:s because that inflated the sizes.
And then the stuff got so messy that those official power of two prefixes were added.

night girder
#

I am so blessed we have AI for this shit.

#

To convert Mebibytes (MiB) to Gigabytes (GB), you can use the conversion factor where 1 MiB is approximately 0.001048576 GB. For example, to convert 10 MiB, multiply by this factor to get about 0.01048576 GB.

charred relic
#

Yeah this was way before AI unfortunately

night girder
#

Like if I didn't know that I had to multiply by 0.01048576 omg... I would be so lost.

charred relic
#

It was a minor thing, but the point is it was an extra step I had to stop and do to continue.

night girder
#

The moment we need to use converers, something is not efficient.

proud aspen
night girder
night girder
twin dew
#

So kB used to mean 1024 Bytes (2^10), but was unofficial use.
Officially in SI system kB means 1000 Bytes (10^3), KiB is explicitly 1024 Bytes (2^10).
And so on with MB being 10^6, MiB being 2^20, GB being 10^9, GiB being 2^30, TB being 10^12, TiB being 2^40.

#

Blame the HDD manufacturers during 90s for this fuckup.

night girder
#

That's one thing I will agree with Baldur.

#

It's a fuckup.

twin dew
#

MS is still using power of two in those screens, but still using the old style unofficial units, which are now mess.

night girder
#

Like imagine if we had a measurement system and suddenly somebody starts counting in different measurements. Like feet. And miles. Can you imagine that confusion?

night girder
#

Maybe heat. Not sure.

#

This is source;

twin dew
#

And now software people in various parts still haven't updated to the new explicit units.

#

So when you see MB, GB, TB etc. you cannot know how much that is, unless you check the often hidden or subtext spec on which one is being used, power of ten SI, or power of two legacy computer.

safe trench
twin dew
#

And Windows is currently on the wrong side, using the SI prefixes for power of two units, like we were still in early 90s.

safe trench
#

i use arch btw hehe

night girder
#

Arch is wrong.

twin dew
#

That new spec for power of two prefixes was standardized in 1999.

night girder
#

Apple is wrong. But some random screenshot of a 5090 using MiB is right ๐Ÿ˜ญ

twin dew
#

RAM and VRAM are still in power of two in all cases, even those 24GiB dies.

glossy glacier
twin dew
#

Same with Flash.
HDDs are only place where power of ten can be the actual implementation for the size.

safe trench
twin dew
#

Everything else on computer tech is powers of two.

night girder
#

The short answer is powers of 2 are easy for electronics and powers of 10 are easy for humans.

#

Bamn. In a nutshell.

glossy glacier
#

For people working in IT: binary/SI
For people using Tech: decimal

night girder
#

A bunch of geeks saying it has to be this. And a bunch of humans looking at it and saying nah, too difficult for my head ๐Ÿคฃ

twin dew
night girder
glossy glacier
safe trench
twin dew
#

Yeah, and MS is using it wrong in most places, still, even after 25 years of actual spec.

night girder
#

All I said; this is confusing. And please stop (the world) making simple thing complex

#

Like kilometers and miles. FFS. We had one unit. Just take it. Don't create something different because you can for no reason.

charred relic
#

you're welcome

night girder
#

Atleast here there is some logic ๐Ÿ˜„

charred relic
#

We also bastardized the Kings english...

glossy glacier
night girder
#

But still, once you need a convert that gives you 20-30 options, you could start to wonder if we aren't makings things overcomplex.

charred relic
#

again... you're very welcome ๐Ÿ˜„

night girder
#

Then again, IT people like things harder than it should be ๐Ÿคฃ

charred relic
#

It was nothing really... not even an inconvenience

night girder
#

To show off big brain or something.

twin dew
#

We had things "simple" by repurposing the standard prefixes as there wasn't actual powers of two standard.
Then marketing fucked that simple state to get higher numbers for same hardware and stuff got complex.
And it is still complex, because even after 25+ years, software and people still haven't switched to the new standard.

charred relic
#

we did get a chuckle when we got to the whole inches and feet thing

night girder
charred relic
#

it was a real side splitter in the moment lemme tell ya

night girder
#

I was thinking; kinda funny how Microsoft is used in professional work environments?

#

Would you use tools in a car repair shop, that weren't using the correct measurements etc?

charred relic
#

eh my friend works for a large IT company they use MS shit

#

they all run around with surface notebooks... use all their stuff internally

#

really the tools don't matter as much as the brain behind it anyhow

glossy glacier
#

MS Surface devices... Exist.
Some interesting ideas, but mostly overpriced garbage

charred relic
#

I'll use a wrech to tighten or loosen a bolt.. a monkey might use it to beat it's own testicles... ya know

twin dew
#

But lot more in the History section about the whole clusterfuck.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_prefix

A binary prefix is a unit prefix that indicates a multiple of a unit of measurement by an integer power of two. The most commonly used binary prefixes are kibi (symbol Ki, meaning 210 = 1024), mebi (Mi, 220 = 1048576), and gibi (Gi, 230 = 1073741824). They are most often used in information technology as multipliers of bit and byte, when express...

night girder
#

But to use a OS, that doesn't even show the data in correct format (MiB) doesn't give me confidence, for professional environment.

charred relic
#

now im picturing a monkey with a "monkey wrench" beating it's own balls with it

glossy glacier
charred relic
#

Well maybe but either way it's the best way for that company to do what it needs to do honestly

twin dew
night girder
#

Everywhere I look it says GB, TB etc.

charred relic
#

them switching to another OS would be far worse

night girder
#

"Hey man, you ruler seems off..." - "Oh I know, just add 0.5 to everything" ...

twin dew
charred relic
#

They also need everything foled in... laptops, phones, tablets yada yada

night girder
#

It's not the professionals who should know it. It's not their responsibility, let me phrase it like that.

#

MS should just do it.

twin dew
night girder
#

They fucking switched their whole startmenu, to the fucking center.

#

If their consumers can handle that, they can handle a little i being added. To MiB, GiB, TiB.

charred relic
#

My friend actually, generally speaking, likes the system

twin dew
#

Yup, MS should have done it long long time ago already.

charred relic
#

Brain dead end users often cause issues but that's not the systems fault

night girder
#

Microsoft have done more drastic things than that.

#

Microsoft will do what they want to do. And find excuses for what they don't want to do.

#

And user input, has little to do with any of the two. They just do whatever the fuck they want. Same for Apple.

charred relic
#

they had a stretch way back of bad press because... well windows was pretty fuckin unstable tbh

night girder
charred relic
#

Always said 95 as shipped was a mistake and they should have bit the bullet and migrated it all to NT right there heh

twin dew
#

So didn't really help.

charred relic
#

would have avoide ALL of that

night girder
#

So seems no way. Not even a toggle. Or registry. Or pro feature.

twin dew
#

Yeah, would need edit to language files.

night girder
#

User; "Hey I got this problem with your OS"
OS maker; "Install this 3rd party tool"

๐Ÿ˜„

charred relic
#

I don't use them anymore because i don't really care or need the features but there are plenty of file explorers that blow the baked in one out of the water

#

or at least used to be... surely there still are

twin dew
charred relic
#

like being able to open an FTP site and just drag files into it like it's a drive

night girder
charred relic
#

well you didn't even have to open it... t would connect if you tried to copy there

twin dew
#

And the worst part is that those official helpers don't even have avenues to report stuff to actual MS people...

night girder
#

All I know is that "I am Arnold and I am here to help you" is a warning to get out asap.

night girder
#

Does english have a concept of 1st and 2nd line? Like the flow of calls when you call a callcenter?

charred relic
#

Look they gotta figure out a way to save a few more nickels to line their pockets with

#

๐Ÿ™‚

night girder
#

"First line" is the first person you speak too that will tell you to turn it on and off.
"Second line" is the second person you speak too, that will try to help you more and goes indepth etc. It's an escalation of help depending on if they can fix it or not lol.

#

Anyway, first line feedback is so valueable for developers and a team.

twin dew
#

MS scrapped all actual internal help people.
And externalized some, with no actual contact from those companies to inside MS.

night girder
#

Nice, a bubble.

twin dew
#

Only current actual feedback to in theory to MS has to go through the "Feedback Hub" reports.
But they only read the stuff with lot of upvotes.

#

So actual problems get swamped and never seen.

night girder
#

was it public feedback hub? Like satisfactory forum/QA I believe?

twin dew
#

Program installed by default in all Win10 and Win11 computers.

night girder
#

So blackbox. You put in your thing and poof that's it.

#

I like public more, you can look up issues, add extra comments to it. Upvote it.

#

You sometimes can see that it got picked up by a teammember of the company.

twin dew
#

Basically like the QA site, but in app instead.
But basically as everything ISN'T monitored, only issues that affect lot of consumers actually get seen.
Enough for people to open the app and find suitable post.

#

For example that camera fuckup many years back where lot of webcams etc. stopped working after update was reported on that Feedback hub multiple months before from Insider branch people, but it didn't get visibility, and wasn't noticed by MS people.

night girder
#

And MS doesn't even care I think.

#

The less they have to deal with "plebs" the better it is so they can make the features they have in their head. (At this point, put AI into everything)

twin dew
#

Lower levels might care, but the people deciding don't.

night girder
#

Yeah lower levels out of the picture here.

#

They just do whatever they are ordered to do. But I mean, peeps that make the descisions.

#

We got the order once to actually start making more connections with consumers and gather more direct feedback.

#

At one point, the company send out a team on the streets to interview people about the product/app.

charred relic
#

not sure how a boxed version works but back in the day windows issues were pc makers issues

#

they just passed the buck on all support to the pc maker

twin dew
#

That was why I asked about if using the legacy depricated method(s), or Task Scheduler that allows you to manage if you need the task to start right away, or delayed.

But basically the idea is to delay as many of startup tasks to only happen after desktop is usable, and spread them out so that the system keeps itself responsive, even on bad systems.

small question

#

its super hard to make hdds corrupt right ?

#

since the data is stored on the disk

twin dew
#

Depends.
Bit rot happens over time if stuff isn't read from time to time, so that the drive automatically rewrites it when getting too faint.

#

Both classic magnetic drives, where that magnetic alignment is lost over time.
And with SSDs where the charge stored in the FLASH cells leaks out.

#

Expected time range to actual bitrot is few years from writing, if not rewritten in meantime.

and plus staying at 45mbit was more expensive than going up to gigabit by this point lmao

charred relic

but your point, jenny, is valid

bronze jasper
#

that'll be the astronauts who leave the solar system for the first time

charred relic
#

it was only from time to time that it was useful for me so i downgraded to 600mbit to save money lol

bronze jasper
#

everything gonna be low poly

charred relic
#

I mean it came in handy... but only like maybe once every month tops

#

Makes a difference when you are downloading a 50+ GB game tho for sure

proud aspen
#

like, you only need to download games once -- I had 28mb ethernet speeds and just left devices on overnight (crunchyroll would sometimes crash mid downloads but i think that mightta been my phone overheating)

pure karma
#

oh yea downloading forza again was more of a benchmark than a internet speed test

bronze jasper

charred relic

1.5mbit/256kbit

that's only enough to piss me off in current year

pure karma
charred relic

yeah forza is another whopper isn't it

proud aspen
charred relic
#

somebody needs to put these games on a diet lol

pure karma
#

honestly forza is reasonable compared to DCS

charred relic
#

well forza is also a super fun awesome game... in my opionion

pure karma
#

atleast forza looks like its being played at a higher resolution than 480P

charred relic
#

I need a good F1 type game

I drove 90% free and 10% actual races

cruising around is surprisingly enjoyable even with the fairly small map

proud aspen

it was so fun (while i could play it on my brother's pc that is ;-;)

pure karma

i literally hopped on just to screw around not long ago

proud aspen
charred relic

I only messed with it briefly on my main rig upstairs

proud aspen
#

yall wanna play once i get the pc??

charred relic
#

i've been out here so much enjoying the weather and doing cloud streaming and light gaming

#

I love this time of year lol

pure karma
#

i mostly used it as a free test bench to improve my video editing skills lmao

#

because its dang near passable as real

charred relic
#

that's how FS is now if you can crank it up

#

that game is just nuts now heh

#

and the physics are still top notch

#

MS has always had good flight sims tho... some better than others but always at least solid

#

hell even cranked up as high as i can go with a good framerate it's gorgeous heh

bronze jasper
#

forza is good stuff. i should get back into it. i dont' want to buy any of the DLC though. i stopped playing cause every event i found while exploring was like, something i had to buy with real money

charred relic
#

i wouldn't buy dlc for that particular game either, not quite that into it

pure karma
#

yea same i couldent care less the buy the dlc

bronze jasper
#

if i don't own a dlc it shouldn't show up in game AT ALL

charred relic
#

i have been known to buy planes in flight sim lol

bronze jasper
#

the game shouldn't be a store

pure karma
#

its microsoft after all and they love stores

charred relic
#

if it's like it used to be years ago a lot of the stuff is 3rd party anyhow

#

and that's where the best stuff was anyhow

bronze jasper
#

imo steam proved the market for micro transactions. i blame them. as much as i love valve as a company, they're a big reason why microtransactions go so hard

charred relic
#

as far as i know you can still drop content into a folder and bam

#

more or less... ya know

#

package it in an installer, call it a day... i suppose

#

i'll find out eventually when there's a plane i really want to fly not avail in the base game ๐Ÿ˜„

TOS doesn't allow them, like children

In D&D, at least back in the day when i palyed i wouldn't be a demon i'd be a devil of some sort

reminds me of the futurama episode where faunsworth's scientific technology is just satanic rituals and incantations.

I'm so happy a new season comes out next week

also, can someone give me a pcp challenge bc i decided im staying awake for 10-20 more mins

They still make that?

futurama? yeah a new season is made now an then. it's not an every year thing

i always thought it was cool that one of my faves from married with children voiced a role ๐Ÿ˜„

bronze jasper

i think if you take pcp you'll be up longer than 20-30min

you just need some B-12

maybe some B-6...

im curious, not dumb heh

bronze jasper

yeah psychotics were something i never touched. ketamine was the closest i got

that one in particular is just known to be...problematic lol

for sure for sure

Basically the network tab on my pc says โ€œunidentified networkโ€ under my Ethernet connection

twin dew
# proud aspen 4???

Data hoarding is kind of thing...
All but the Optane are RAID-1 mirrors or equivalent, so the raw storage is double...
Stuff is HDDs, Profile is SATA SSDs and Windows + Games is 2TB NVMe SSDs.

#

But 256GB is perfectly usable for just Windows and smaller games.
Larger game installs can hit 150GB for single game at this time.

#

So 2x 2TB NVMe SSD, 2x 512GB SATA SSD, 2x 6TB HDD, and 64GB NVMe Optane.

twin dew
#

But I need to do some housekeeping there.
Third party defrag and then first party shrink for that System partition, then third party move and first party expand for that Games.

twin dew
night girder
#

Anyone got experience with Windows sandbox?

#

I got a questionable file here, ran it through virus scanner, only 1 hit. Was thinking about opening it in sandbox.

#

I think I might just going to write script to scrape it off a website that datamined the game instead of messing with some sus .exe and dig into the game files myself ๐Ÿ˜›

twin dew
#

Machine learning based detection from Acronis.

night girder
#

Yeah, I don't have faith in the virus scanner either. Bulgarian.

#

I think.

twin dew
#

Mainly that it is ML based heurestic detection, so the lowest possible validity expectation.

night girder
#

On reddit, a lot say it gives false possitive. But I wonder how they can be so sure.

#

And Acronis is Swiss apparantly.

twin dew
#

So either false positive.
Or intentional work to get it past virus scanners and actual problem.

Cannot say how probable either option is without knowing file and source.
But if you say Reddit, then the chance of intentionally hidden goes up.

night girder
#

Scaping the website is going to be pain. The id's don't make sense. It goes from 0-1000 and then picks up at 10 000 - 20 000.

#

I could just loop through the id's and get the data I need. But if they have a brain, they got security in place to stop my script ๐Ÿ˜›

night girder
#

I was just looking up the actual reported virus and other experiences with Acronis.

#

I also scanned with windows defender.

#

Oh wow, virustotal has a behavior tab.

#

but it's unclear what is being done because of sandbox mode. And what the file is doing.

#

Like Windows Media Player?

#

Why would a .exe thats meant to extract game files access windows media player ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Ah, so Mitre is just showing what the file does in a sandbox that can be questionable. Like an overview of everything it does.

twin dew
#

Yes, and lot of software open registry keys and/or files as read-write, even when they just read.

#

Which is very annoying.

night girder
#

It does use Windows Utilities to exploit "something" hehe

twin dew
#

Those cmd.exe <things> commands trigger that.

night girder
#

You know what? Fuck it. Not gonna risk it ๐Ÿ˜„

I should optimize and check if id's exist in json before executing the REST call. But it's still fresh code, and it's more that I just want a db.json so I continue the application itself.

#

A means to an end.

#

and I need a lot of data to see how the search engine holds up ๐Ÿ˜„

charred relic
#

I always just ran questionable shit in a VM

#

But unless you're going to break out some tools to investigate you'll likely run it and it appear nothing weird happened

#

A good example is from a long time ago... the only virus I ever actually had an infestation of in my life. TaiPan, one of it's variants.

#

It wa totally silent and the only indication anything was weird is any executable below a certain size had some junk data added so those files got a bit bigger

#

And yeah the variant I had that is literally all it did was spread, no dangerous payload and since most executables were larger than it touched it didn't even infect nearly every file.

#

might have been com files even back then, can't recall exactly but it was either .com or .exe's

pure karma
#

iv had 1 virus and it imediately installed mcaffe and exposed itself in 3 seconds ๐Ÿ˜‚

a lot of people have never even seen a .com file i guess.. these days

younger folks anyhow

your right about that

it was just an dos executable

anytime i see talk of old stuff it makes me want to try and revive my first pc

#

but its been sitting outside for like 10 years lmao

charred relic
#

if you boot up some old dos floppy in a vm you'll for sure see one

#

can't say for sure but no way there isn't a bunch even on the boot disk for dos

#

i still have my first "real" computer

pure karma
#

you assume iv ever seen a floppy disc in person

charred relic
#

I say "real" to mean IBM (or compatible)

#

A Tandy 1000EX... 8088 CPU

#

still works...

#

hell i don't think i've seen a floppy disk in person in at least a couple decades heh

#

don't see discs for computers now either really

pure karma
#

i dont know why but to me everything is post win10

charred relic
#

well thjat's a lie because within the last couple of years i touched one... a 3.5" in a closet with a bunch of old computer software and manuals

pure karma
#

anytime i see anyone working with older windows versions than that it seems so distopian

charred relic
#

windows before 95 was pretty clunky

pure karma
#

i cant comprehend how the world worked before than

#

which is ironic because i used a good few of the windows version before that

charred relic
#

most home users didn't use windows before 95. In fact an extra step was needed to have a computer back then boot right into windows

pure karma
#

yea i know about that

charred relic
#

had to call it from the batch file, by default it would boot to DOS prompt

pure karma
#

the era where windows was esentially just a running program

charred relic
#

yeah it was lol

#

Guess what... so was 95 though really

#

Same (modified) kernel, one not meant to do more than one thing at a time when it was designed.

#

they should have bit the bullet and switched to the NT kernel for 95

pure karma
#

if i dident suspect that my old pc is coroded to oblivion (and know the psu cables are cut) id probably have tried to revive it already

charred relic
#

but people would have been pissed because a bunch of DOS software wouldn't work

#

They did manage to perform some kinda voodoo to get that kernel to work for all that though I guess.. so hats off heh

#

if it's old old stuff you really gotta keep an eye on the board... unfortunately

#

i inspect my Tandy every so often for good measure to make sure a cap isn't gonna pop or something

pure karma
#

its probably not dinosaur levels acient cause i think it did support windows 7 although i nerver did the upgrade but its not new for sure

charred relic
#

pcs out of the store back then could be wild too... packard bell was nuts

#

we had 3 of the SAME model opened up once

#

they all had different hardware for various components lol

#

one even had an entirely diferent mobo

pure karma
#

but its been sitting in a unisolated garage for a decade so it defedently has element damage
