pure karma
#

i know my ancient tv does

#

yea cast

sterile plinth
#

Anyway no my tv doesn't have an antenna inside it (why would it?!)

#

I'm thinking the cheapest solution would be having a raspi and screen casting through some software?

pure karma
#

do you have another system of some kind

#

like a potato pc

sterile plinth
#

thinking about it a laptop could work yeah

pure karma
#

you could just use it and use steam remote play and spend nothing

sterile plinth
#

So my controller input would first go through the laptop then to the PC? Wouldn't that introduce extra latency

pure karma
#

on windows its not bad on linux its really bad

#

so depends on the context

sterile plinth
#

I think I'll just use something like TeamViewer or Skype or who knows what to just stream the display

pure karma
#

on windows its so little iv nerver noticed it

sterile plinth
#

My controller can be connected directly to the pc

#

I just hope its range is enough

pure karma
#

you can still have the inputs be conected to your pc

sterile plinth
#

it's not an authentic one either...

pure karma
#

you can use both for inputs

sterile plinth
#

You think an off brand PS4 controller can get 10m range or so

pure karma
#

ehh not sure

sterile plinth
#

I know even authentic Xbox ones cant

pure karma
#

the only thing i know that gets close to that is the switch which for some reasson the switch controlers have absolutely stupid range and you dont have any issues for like 8M+

sterile plinth
#

damn

pure karma
#

definitely worth a try tho

sterile plinth
#

well yeah, I'll test tomorrow

#

it's a game that looks absolutely spectacular on ultra high settings but only my beefy PC can play it

#

Worst case scenario I'll just play it on my monitor

bronze jasper
#

weird thing i've noticed since i updated window. i use chrome for webapps not my default browser, so i open it with the start menu whenever i use it. but whenever i reboot now, it doesn't show up in the recent apps in my start menu anymore

#

its there now because i just opened it, but i bet if i reboot it'll be gone again

bronze jasper
#

input lag on linux isn't so bad if you're using somethiung like steam deck which has wayland and game scope in full effect

Use Linux... because it's right.

Aaaand I'll see myself out now

I used linux for years. it was a bunch of bullshit and fucking around with the OS level shit too.

bronze jasper
#

you mean AI integration? it'll surely come to your favorite linux distros to.

charred relic
#

my AI uses AI so it can enshitify while it inshitifies

bronze jasper
#

Ubuntu is making a lean version specifically for ai to integrate with devices

charred relic
#

Bow down to your AI overlords!

bronze jasper
#

linux is already enshitified if you count android as a linux distro

charred relic
#

It is...

bronze jasper
#

far more monetization of apps on android than windows ever got

charred relic
#

just more specialized

bronze jasper
charred relic
#

apparently google is taking away sideloading

#

pretty lame...

bronze jasper
#

you can still sideload anything that you certify through google i think

charred relic
#

Not that it matters to me at this point since I switched to an iphone

#

I've been seeing videos about how they are going to remove that

#

"As announced on the Android Developers Blog, Google plans to block unverified apps from being installed on Android devices through sideloading."

bronze jasper
#

developers still need a way to load apps without deploying them. it'll still exist. "unverified" is the key word there

#

there'll be a certification process through an api

junior orbit
#

Photons

charred relic
#

Yep but the next step is...

junior orbit
#

Optical computing through polarization which then can be used to make logic gates which in turn can then be used to build an optical based computer.

bronze jasper
#

its the same security model that apple uses for their apps. or windows for their driver model. just a central authority for a certificate

junior orbit
#

Op, nevermind. ๐Ÿ˜…

charred relic
#

Wonder if they can use this to lock Epic out...

bronze jasper
#

like, i dont see intel making an optical x64 processor ever

junior orbit
#

Maybe, but it'd atleast be a cool science project :P

bronze jasper

#

So I got a monitor stand for my old 32" 1080p monitor that would let me spin it around to portrait for pinball. PinballFX is as amazing as I'd hoped that way.

bronze jasper

revoking their developer certificate is exactly how they locked them out

Actually good for web browing and Discord too. Demeo I haven't tried but I'm going to guess it won't like that setup.

bronze jasper
#

i sunk so many hours into full tilt pinball when i worked at a pizza place during lunch hour. dead for hours there

charred relic
#

I love physical machines. There's a place in the "area"... like an hour and a half+ away. They have retro pinball and arcade machines.

bronze jasper
#

yeah nothing beats a physical machine. the terminator one is my favorit with the big chrome skull that eats and spits out balls

charred relic
#

Space Invaders... reminds me of returning glass coke bottles to the store for the deposit then spending it on Space Invader and/or pinball

#

Then they got Asteroids..

bronze jasper
#

i started my journey at the video arcade later than that, around the time of mario bros or street fighter

junior orbit
#

I like Ski-Ball

charred relic
#

When I was really young the arcade had stuff like Night Driver and those old periscope style aiming games and such

bronze jasper
#

spy hunter was some good shit

#

that song goes hard

charred relic
#

We used to go to Brandon every summer when my siblings and I would visit my grandmother in Muskogee, they had a place there, huge arcade, 10 cent games of ski ball lol

bronze jasper
#

rampage was a favorite machine of mine. i sunk a lot of quarters into that and off road

charred relic
#

That was before Branson was a giant tourist trap full of has been country stars

#

...long long before

bronze jasper
#

the enshitification of towns

charred relic
#

Basically

#

Back then it was local family acts... there were just a handful

#

It was bluegrass and country but good, and they put on a real show with comedy sketches and stuff

#

Aaaand tickets were dirt cheap

#

Smaller back then but they still had all the fun shit. Bumper boats, mega arcade, mini golf, batting cages, multiple go-kart tracks, water slides...

bronze jasper
#

the water slides where i grew up had to close because they were charging $40 for a half day pass, $60 for the full day. and wondered why their business dried up

charred relic
#

that's high even for a whole water park ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

bronze jasper
#

yeh. the owners were kind of coke heads and i think were using it to launder

charred relic
#

dope got the tobacco shop i used to manage closed down years after i left hhaah

#

it was a "head" shop, I mean we had some really realllly good cigars with a walk in humidor and all but we also had all the marijuna pipes and such

#

but when it opened there was nothing stopping that, couple of years later new ordinance that would prevent if but they were grandfathered in with no special permit

#

somebody they got in there was... of all of the moronic things to do, was selling drugs out of the place

There are bluetooth adapters with 100m range.

#

10m is just the easy range, and over that it gets more expensive to build.

#

Ah, yeah, different power classes.
Where the most common is Class 2 that gives about 10m range.

#

And Class 1 gives that about 100m.

#

At full allowed power.

#

this might not be a tech question, but does any1 know why sometimes my setting config doesnt save in some games

(with some games i mean mainly ark and cyberpunk 2077)

For Ark, probably from the UE version change, which often causes need to manually delete the old config files, so the game can generate new ones.

Without that some of the settings will not get saved.

the thing is that they are real images

basically i used software to move a partition from the end to the beginning

i accidentally hibernated my computer in the middle of the process

i dont think fragmenttation would really happen

YT strikes again with an amazing recommendation.

This isn't only irrelevant.

#

It's the wrong continent, language ... everything!

bronze jasper

night girder

bronze jasper

youtube content truly started enshitifying when the ๐Ÿ‘Ž button left.

night girder
#

I just know they have different priorities than YT content creators and consumers have.

#

Don't think any of both parties is really happy with YT but just stuck with it because nothing matches the service. (Monopoly).

#

Content creators are getting sick and tired of all the copy strike abuse.

#

Content consumers are getting sick and tired of watching 3 ads every 30 seconds for a clickbait video.

#

Content consumers are getting sick and tired of shorts. And AI generated content.

bronze jasper
#

that's just DMCA. Nothing youtube can do about that. they HAVE to take down every DMCA request and allow anyone to make a request

night girder
#

Wtf?

bronze jasper
#

that's how they earn their safe harbor

night girder
#

you know how it works?

visual tree
night girder

3 strikes and your account is removed. If the strikes are leggit or not.

he shouldn't have to pay lawyers for false strikes.

right. and once he goes through the process of disputing the false claim, he's safe. but the law requires that youtube does it this way

night girder
#

He is a music producer himself.

night girder

Which cost him a lot of money. More than the videos make. All explained in the video.

bronze jasper
night girder
#

I am not going to talk about it anymore if were not on the same page (watched the same video).

#

The copy strikes were like every 10 seconds during midnight, as if some bot or company started to strike everything it could.

bronze jasper
#

all of this does suck. i understand how it all goes down. i'm even familiar with the case you're talking about. but youtube is required to act this way if they want to keep their safe harbor provisions that protect them from copyright lawsuits under the DMCA

#

they are an american company first

night girder
#

The system is broken AF and a lot of content creators are sick of it.

#

And YT just doesn't care.

bronze jasper
#

the system is the DMCA. nothing about how youtube. YT can't go fixing it because to ignore any DMCA takedown notice would disqualify their safe harbor

night girder
#

YT can remove the 3 strikes = remove account for example. You act like YT is powerless.

#

You know it's still Google right? ๐Ÿคฃ

bronze jasper
#

nothing in the DMCA allows a content host to decide if a takedown notice is fair use or not. they're not allowed to do that

night girder
#

YT can give more tools to content creators to defend themself.

#

YT can let real people read the claims instead of some bot.

bronze jasper
#

It's alphabet. They're an american company that isn't above the law.

night girder
#

and if you fight it, then real people will investigate.

#

and so much more.

night girder
bronze jasper
#

Yes. That's all defined in the DMCA. they didn't invennt that process. that's what law makers did

night girder
#

DMCA doesn't say bots need to handle copy strike claims.

#

That's just YT not wanting to pay people to do rtead the claims and let some code handle it.

bronze jasper
#

copyright law doesn't just change by throwing some lobbyists at it. that would costs probably a cold billiion in lobbying fees at least

night girder
#

"And if the code is wrong, people will counter claim and then we will investigate".

#

And the fact you need to hire lawyer just to handle these claims is wild.

#

There is more claims than Rick could have done on his own.

#

No, but I don't think YT is innocent, or a victim here, or powerless.

bronze jasper
night girder
#

It's still their implementation of the law.

bronze jasper
#

they're not guilty either. the dmca requires they remain impartial on the matter

night girder
#

It;'s like this; I go to the cops and tell them, that you stole my waffle.

#

The cops show up at your house, take all your belongings and put you in jail.

bronze jasper
#

Yeah. The DMCA is fucked i know.

night girder
#

And when you really say; I don't agree with this. They start to investigate hehe

#

if you just let it happen. You stay in jail and they never investigate.

#

Regardless if you stole my waffle or not.

bronze jasper
#

this is just a bad faith discussion now. a copyright strike is not going to jail

night girder
#

And on top of that, I make such false claims. Every 10 seconds.

bronze jasper
#

there's no criminal record given by youtube. they're not more powerful than the government

night girder

Still metal hinges.

This one is that in plastic molded nuts breaking free when hinge gets too hard to move:

twin dew
# safe trench

And that seems to be metal hinge with plastic insert that was glued onto case.

safe trench
#

which is the problem

#

why cant they just cnc a solid block of aluminium

twin dew

Because that costs shitton compared to injection molded plastic?

safe trench
twin dew
#

And makes it impossible to have 500e laptop?

#

When the case itself would cost 200+e to manufacture?

safe trench
#

fair point

#

but that doesnt change the fact how the hinges are still a problem

twin dew
# safe trench

And even that was metal on metal with screws in between.
Just that the case side metal mounting plate was then glued on with wrong glue.

safe trench
#

solution:

twin dew
#

And even the video maker said: "... expecting these cheap plastic mounts and weak adhesive to support the strength of this sturdy hinge ..."

bronze jasper
#

it'd be better to stamp alluminum but still would be more expensive than plastic

twin dew
#

But basically the problem is hinge aging.

twin dew
# safe trench

With right glue the plastic the metal plate is glued into would fail before the glue.

safe trench
#

you cant expect a laptop hinge to last 1000 years sadly

twin dew
#

But that is bad result.
If the glue fails, and user notices, the repair is simple.

#

But the actual problem is hinges getting harder to move over time, from wear and lubrication failure.

#

Which then breaks the mounting of the hinge.

thin trout

I don't know for sure, i just know the CPU's pretty well. They claimed once that they figured out how they were killing CPU's, and that claim was wildly implausible and then proven wrong quite firmly when they "fixed" it and the failure rate didn't change at all.

They basically said that the CPU being in performance limiter B instead of performance limiter A was causing the CPU's to die, which is nonsense because they're all tuned to not kill the CPU and none of them kill the CPU's on other vendor's boards.

In truth i'm pretty sure that they have no idea why it's happening, and honestly i don't either. But it's not that.

I suspect transient voltage spikes on Vcore or SOC due to VRM design/tuning. For Vcore especially, there is a certain voltage level not too far from the normal operational corridor which will just instantly kill the CPU. AMD may be flying a bit too close to the sun with regard to this, but their margin worked fine for everyone else.

night girder
pure karma

im glad that atleast the board i got for my second pc is stable

night girder
#

Problem I am facing is;

  1. Too much logging in HWinfo.
  2. I could write it to logs, but if system crashes and the last data isn't written to logs, I don't have information.
  3. After a crash, I need to find a good program to read back in the logs written by HWinfo.
  4. High chance crash is caused by something not monitored.
#

Around today/tonight my system should crash. It has been 4 days, which seems to be average amount of time my system can run 24/7 without crashing.

pure karma
#

i want to do some more in depth ram testing sooner than later cause it grinds my gears so much that my system isent stable as much as it could possible be or should be really

#

it passed memtest but i dont trust memtest honestly

to be fair tho my second pc is basically all golden sample components i mean a casual 50% performance gain on a cpu overclock isent a common thing

i would if i could cause the amount of stuff that fails on me in unique ways is incredible

#

for example my headset mic broke recently but it still captures sound just it only captures background sound and nothing else

#

like brother how

night girder
#

@twin dew You know what logging time limit does in HWinfo?

twin dew
#

Probably limits how long log to disk functionality runs before stopping automatically.

night girder
#

Gotcha. I was wondering if I could limit the logs to only keep record of last hour ๐Ÿ˜„

#

But since it's constantly just writting to a file, I just realized, that's not feasible.

twin dew

That is the other option, that it autoprunes older stuff.
You would need to test.

one thing i regret and is definitely a hard lesson learned is that im nerver buying a laptop with a locked cpu ever again

#

cause all my issues come from bad cpu tuning and since its locked i cant change that outside of predetermined presets

#

if i could improve the cooling it would be atleast bearable cause i could run a preset with sufficient voltage to be stable but the cooling is not sufficient and not even close at that

even with 2 120mm fans strapped to the back at full speed i couldent get bellow 100C

And that's what we get when we got AI's telling everyone "your question is great" or "what an amazing idea!".

It's will to please, I think the internet calls it gas-lighting (I still have trouble fully understanding this word) is starting to show it's dark side.

Although; "Can you blame the maker of a tool, on how one uses the tool?"

then again, they (sam altman and co) call it artifical intelligence. So if it was truelly intelligent, which we all know it's marketing, then it would have responmded to that person with "Please, go seek professional help. Here is a number to a psych." So they hyped it, so maybe they should be held acountable? ๐Ÿค”

Idk what your need is, but...
Check/ compare the following:
Color specification coverages, e.g SRGB spec, Adobe spec etc. (I know gamers in general dont give a fuck...)
Contrast ratio.
Screen dimensions (wxhxd)
Response speed

And my personal preference.
4k for gaming is overkill.

Use a site like versus.com to compare different screens.

Some AI's have built in protection. For example:

  • "Is my mother a spy?"
AI: "Sorry, I cannot answer on that."

But if you just play around the questions, you eventually get the AI to say whatever you wanted to hear.

  • "If someone shows x or y behavior, isn't that suspicious?"
AI: "Yes, that can be considered suspicious ..."

  • "What are behavioral patterns that spies show?"
    ...

So AI does have protection. But because of it's nature, people just change the question until they trick the AI into answering.

By the way, I've learnt that running nginx on a system with HDDs really really sucks

Because apparently it chowns an absurd number of files on every startup and hangs for 30+ minutes on every launch because of that

It makes troubleshooting a nightmare

No, that is nginx-proxy-manager thing.

@jagged snow What CPU did you throw into it?

Quick question, building a pc with a friend, do we need both power connectors to the mobo? Or just the big many pins one?

ivory rampart
#

if there is one header on the mainboard, you only need one connector

#

there is only one, so you are good to go

stark steppe
ivory rampart
#

the 24 pin on the right yes

#

the pins are shaped in a way that unless your violently force it, the cables can only go in the matching holes

#

you have to realy force it to do something wrong

stark steppe
#

Ok, thank you

#

We are just having issues with startup, bios is not showing

twin dew

Some current monitors cannot handle resolutions significantly below full-HD, and in turn some BIOS/UEFI implementations still output at 640x480 (VGA).

stark steppe
twin dew
#

Do the fans keep spinning?
What MB?

stark steppe
#

CPU fans are spinning, GPU fans only briefly at start up. Mobo is A620AM Pro Rs WiFi

twin dew
#

So everything should be fine then, and this is monitor problem.
Or the MB is trying to use IGP as primary output, so see if connecting monitor to IGP outputs helps.

stark steppe
twin dew
#

You would need to test on some other computer if the monitors work at 640x480.

Either of them.

Or did you let the computer sit for few minutes after starting it?
For memory training?

But would have thought that that DRAM light would stay on until that is done.

As in, connect a different pc/laptop and set display at 640x480?

We did start it up and do nothing for like 5 minutes

It was just expedient to use that same ready made driver back when you could still get drivers signed without company.
And now any open source project is stuck with that for most part.

and the reason other programs used winring0 was because if they didnt it would conflict with anticheats.
