It's why I try to get noise normalized data from a trusted third party

feral drift
#

I know there is a ton of factors playing in on noice level ect. such as quality of bearing, fan blade design ect.

but meassuring dB is something I would expect to be somewhat same method across manufactors..

dire igloo
#

It's not

#

Also, as I explained:
Noctua fan is louder and moves more air.
If you slow it down so it moves the same amount of air as Thermalright, which one would be louder?

feral drift
#

But I do get your point - get a good trusted review channel, that uses the same method/equipment to meassure the noice level, regardless of product

dire igloo
#

All the stuff you said is meaningless if you have noise normalized data

#

Noise normalized means "at same dBA, which one moves more air"

My f'ed up PC Story - Part 3
So today I used my old mobo/cpu along with a fresh install of windows 8.1 (yes, you read that right) to test both my gfx card. Both are working fine at Gen 3 (mobo limitation) x16.
Contacted my local shop about RMA policy : these guys were fucking clueless about the intel 13th gen debacle. Asked me to bring my PC in. Yeah sure, i'm gonna bring a mid-tower via subway.

languid gulch
#

i'm allergic to thermaltake after the caselabs lawsuit

#

Contacted Intel support : after about an hour of chat (descriptions, questions, product info, basic testing), that ended with them "contacting me in 1-2 biz days"? I decided to put my pc back together

languid gulch
karmic socket
#

haha, I wish, I don't even know if they gonna accept the RMA

#

Anyway guess what, it's working "fine". I'm literally using it right now to write this.

#

48 hours ago, it went poof and refused to boot at all, then it limped on, and today it both refused to worked when it literally mattered, and started working fine 30 minutes after that

#

I have no idea whats going on

languid gulch
#

the good news is that if it is the cpu, there's a 5 year RMA for it

karmic socket
#

yeah !

#

That said, the scientific in me would like to know the root cause of these shenanigans

#

I mean Internet gremlins or Space Hamsters, but tell me what happened

languid gulch

karmic socket

like my old mobo was sitting in an open card board, with the cpu and heatsink/rad still mounted

#

how many of you owuld do that ?

languid gulch
#

depends on what the hardware is

#

i split up my old pc and gave my parents a triple upgrade

#

mom got a new mobo/cpu from me, upgraded gpu from dad's pc, dad got a bigger gpu from me, and then i took their old components and built a new/old living room pc for them

but tl;dr: some shit is supposed to run at X frequency with Y voltage, and it just doesn't any more (particularly in certain conditions like hotter temperatures)

#

these guys were fucking clueless about the intel 13th gen debacle
you'd have to be reaaaally incompetent to be a hardware worker in 2025 and not know about that, it's one of the biggest stories of the last few decades and directly affects the stuff that you are working with or selling/supporting. Probably over a dozen of my news sources have covered it, many in great depth, and i saw it happening firsthand before that (although i couldn't have imagined the scope of the problem, i mostly thought that it was automatic overclocks like XMP causing it at first - but no, it became clear that it was happening everywhere and with cpu's that never ran out of spec)

If anything AMD as a company has never been in a stronger position than it is right now, well on the cpu side, obviously gpu side leaves some work, mainly AMD isnt competing on the high end, and gpu for mobile is mostly not existing also

#

But still overall AMD as whole is certainly offering intel alot of competition and then some

charred relic
#

Personally I'm ok with them not competing at the highest end, but I also don't spend that kind of money. Past a point you get rapidly diminished value for every dollar more spent.

#

Also how big is the market for those super expensive cards...

#

I know almost the exact breakaway point with some things like microphones, if you are spending more than 400 you have a special need or just money to burn.

100 to 400 is a substantial jump, 400 vs 1200 is.. very little

100 to 400 in the world of microphones is a big difference, which is the whole point

and you can hardly compare spending 400 to 1200 just saying only 3x

#

I mean I guess I'm gladd that 8 hundo is no big deal for ya, it is for most folks.

#

those microphones don't sell as well as they do because they're basically the same...

#

you know that...right?

#

If so everyone would ust go spend about 100...

#

Also unless it's a specialty case you can't compare them in a regular room, neither will sound good. It has to be at least fairly decently treated for sound.

In some cases the better microphone will sound worse becaus eit's picking up more reflections

thin trout
#

Light has all kinds of quirky shit going on

#

especially when you get to stuff like different wavelengths of light being absorbed differently by different materials, so the percieved color and brightness shift as it passes through materials based on their effect, density and size

#

e.g. shader i worked on.

#

^Note the dynamic color shift based on how much water is between the camera and the ground. The water is white at zero depth and dark blue to black with high depths with an exponential falloff of 3 color channels in between, which is quite a simplified implementation. To get photorealism you need to simulate many more wavelengths (there's effectively a near-infinite number IRL) and get stuff like the falloff rate and depth exactly right.

The absorption of each wavelength of light also differs wildly with e.g. multiple blended materials and different characteristics (so e.g. water with silt in it will be very different to clear water).

We literally use measurements of this to identify the chemical constituents of the atmosphere of planets which are light years away, but between us and a measurable light source like their star.

The first commercially available 64-bit operating system for personal computers was Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, released in April 2005. This version was specifically designed for processors utilizing the x86-64 (or AMD64) architecture. While there were earlier 64-bit versions of Windows for other architectures like Itanium, XP Professional x64 was the first to gain widespread adoption for mainstream desktop and workstation use. Microsoft later released a 64-bit version of Windows Vista in 2006, which became the standard for newer PCs.

If that's the case, i still dont 😄

verbal raft
thin trout

subambient cooling is wildly impractical to use on a daily setup though because of issues like condensation

#

Maybe it was a 12k btu condenser, I don't actually know what the size of it was.

Fug, Windows 11 24H2 "fixed" a bug/feature where you could have one accent color for new stuff, and another for old stuff with registry editing...
Now it resets that registry setting used by "old" stuff to the Settings Accent color on login...

#

If I disable "Show accent color on title bars and window borders", old programs will have white title bar.
If I set the general accent color to what I want for those title bars etc,, there is no contrast in several "critical" things like volume indicator etc.

In 23H2 I could just set another color as the general accent color, and then registry edit that older value to nice dark grey.

#

Ok, found new setting that works like the old one did.
Previously edited Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\AccentColor and AccentColorInactive
Now need to edit the latter and then Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Accent\AccentColorMenu

#

So is windows reporting RAM + VRAM?

twin dew
#

No.

night girder
#

After closing firefox.

night girder
twin dew
#

There are multiple things that can be reported as RAM usage.

night girder
#

That's double.

twin dew
#

Lot of things like I said:

dire igloo
# night girder That's double.

Task Manager reports allocated RAM, how much of the RAM the program is told it can use.

Warframe itself might report actual usage, how much of the allocated RAM it has actually filled with data

#

Also: RAM usage goes up the more RAM you have available.
A program might seem like a resource hog when the PC is idle, but it'll step back if the OS restricts allocation due to higher priority on other tasks

twin dew
#

Mostly Task Manager reports that "Working set (memory)".
Commit size is the amount of requested allocations, including not used memory.

night girder
#

Oh right, the point I was trying to make; I don't think 4GB cuts it for modern systems 😄

#

Even with what Fireworker said.

dire igloo
#

Absolutely doesn't, unless you're like super light in usage

twin dew
#

But that Working set includes that "Shared working set", where same library etc. is only loaded once, but used by multiple programs.

dire igloo
#

Even less so with satisfactory and streaming, lol
idk what that guy was on, but most likely a troll

night girder
#

Don't want to be a dick. But windows clearly says in use;

#

Which to me isn't the same as allocated = "can be used".

twin dew
#

And that ingame number might not include the game exe and the libraries themselves, just what is allocated past that.

night girder
#

And I assume it's just poor wording from OS.

twin dew
#

Where as the Task Manager includes those too.

dire igloo
night girder
#

Also normally when you expand, you get more details.

#

But for Warframe it goes blank 🤣

twin dew
#

That Processes is always somewhat suspect.
And the Details is more accurate.

#

But that in turn has those multiple different RAM and VRAM usage categories.

#

By default most aren't shown.

night girder
#

details report same.

twin dew
#

Yeah, but in this case, the games own numbers probably only include the "dynamic" RAM usage, and not the base exe, library etc. usages.

twin dew
# twin dew Where as the Task Manager includes those too.

Example with save loaded in Satisfactory.
Using 4.2G of RAM in actuality, 300MB of that being shared with other programs (using same library that needs to be loaded for even single program).
So shutting the game down would only free 3.9G of RAM.
Game has requested allocation 7G of memory, but hasn't initialized almost 3G of that, so it that isn't actually used.
And is using 3G of VRAM and 30M of RAM as VRAM.

#

And all the RAM that is just for the game is in actual RAM, not in swap.

tl;dr

The USB ports are split between two controllers: one Fresco Logic controller (for most of the 5 Gbps ports), and an ASMedia controller (for the 10Gbps port and one or two of the 5 Gbps ports). In total, CalDigit advertises 15 usable ports across USB, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, Ethernet, optical audio, analog audio, and an SD card reader. Yes, they count the SD card reader and audio jacks as ports. Regardless, this number is a lie — the total number of usable ports is far fewer — which leads to the first major caveat of this device.

night girder
#

So they make a hub, and don't test that if you connect every port, that you get full speed?

twin dew
#

You cannot get full speed on everything at same time.
But it shouldn't make stuff disconnect or bug out.

night girder
#

Maybe I need to do a little more investigation. Maybe they mention it somewhere.

#

But honestly, their website is kinda information overload.

twin dew

But this isn't any hub Baldur.

Intentional limitations in the chips, to simplify stuff, with expectation that "no-one needs more than one external monitor" or something like that IIRC.

night girder

Apple assumes a lot.

tough owl
night girder
#

Assumes:

  1. People want thinner and thinner laptops, that was their excuse to get rid of Apple logo with backlight.
  2. Removed audio port, because it wasn't the future.
  3. Introduced their own ports because they though we wanted that.
    ...
#

Now they add ports back.

#

Because, hey, surprise surprise, people were not happy.

tough owl
#

their own port being lightning?

night girder
#

Yeah.

twin dew
#

That had its good points, and was launched before USB-C was a thing.

night girder
#

it feels like apple wants to steer the way of the future themselves. And not let the community steer the future.
Or how do I explain myself. That they have an idea of the future, and that's the future they want, regardless of what the consumer/users of their product want?

twin dew
#

But for long time it was just about Apples control and licensing fees.

night girder
#

I think a POE1 developer said once, if we did everything the community asks of us, nobody would play the game anymore.
So, we as developers listen to community, but also have to double check if it makes sense what they ask.

night girder

glossy glacier

Lightning was a solution to a problem at the time. Apple just stuck too long to it

because the EU wanted one cable on all devices which makes sense, and I agree with it but apple if they had wanted to could've made lightning faster, and 2 an open standard like qi2 but they got complancant because MFI royalties make bank

twin dew
night girder
twin dew
#

Ok, so Dell has started to drop them.

night girder
#

That's front and side of HP one.

#

The dell D6000 has one though.

#

But audio ports have been dropped for a few years now. Because apple said bluetooth was the future.

#

Schiller then offered a three-point "why Apple is removing the audio jack" speech. Here are the tent poles:

The 3.5 mm headphone jack is an analog port. Using Lightning means you can, say, skip to the next track on your iPhone 7 straight from your headphones. It can also charge your headphones.
The iPhone is packed full of amazing technology. If you want more stuff in there, you need to free up space, and that analog headphone jack takes up space.
Apple believes the future of everything is all wireless, all the time.
twin dew
#

And that media control was implemented on analog headphones too with just resistors + buttons, blocking mic while pressed.

night girder
#

really? that I didn't know. my bluetooth JBL earbuds do have control.

#

Tap left for environment audio, double tap left to go back, tap right to pause, double tap right to skip song I think?

twin dew
#

Basically shorting the mic line to ground with resistor value determining the function.

#

Play/pause, forward, backwards at least, possibly volume control too.

#

Well, volume control etc. could be done, just not sure if anyone did support it or not.

Understanding Browser Usage Share Data
StatCounter Global Stats Fact Sheet
Sample size

When compiling statistics, larger sample sizes generally lead to more reliable results. Our stats are based on over 5 billion page views per month recorded across more than 1.5 million websites. We are not aware of any other publicly available data source with a larger sample size.
Browser Usage Stats based on Page Views

StatCounter measures internet usage trends. We track which browsers are actually used most. To accurately measure browser usage, we base our stats on page views (and not unique visitors). This means we take account of how frequently browsers are used and we also track multi-browser usage by individuals.

So they put trackers into 1.5 million websites? hehe

That's the biggest thing that is weird and bothersome for me. Accessing the main file manipulation menu, rather than right click, is now under right click > show more; no option to disable that. Same for graphics driver control panel.

To access the audio controls such as which devices are enabled (which i do several times a day) instead of right click left click, you have to do: right click, sound settings, scroll down a bunch, then click "more sound settings" out of a list of options.. which opens the windows 7-10 menu where the controls actually exist.

thin trout
#

It's kinda important yeah. 390hz IPS gsync is smoother than 480hz OLED without gsync, especially at framerates like 300-400. At 500fps they're similar at best because gsync helps as much as +20% refresh.

you CAN overpower it with just raw refresh rate (like 720hz OLEDs supposed to be coming later this year)

Also, even if you do pixel clean at morning and night on the latest Asus OLEDs, they WILL turn themselves off in the middle of the day to force a pixel clean. It's after 8 hours of usage in a day or something. Had it happen to me several times while using mine (before it broke on day 12, gg asus, don't buy those). and that is very achievable especially with framegen and DLSS

dire igloo

I'm talking about transfer bandwidth

thin trout
#

DP2.1 exists and is on displays this year, and displays without it use DSC.

#

Yeah, the monitors this year are DP2.1 with uncompressed 10bit 1080p720. So QHD is not too much of a drop from there.

dire igloo
#

What's the point of OLED if you're gonna DSC anyway?

thin trout
#

I agree, DSC is a garbage fire

#

that's why i wait and advise for DP2.1 monitors

dire igloo

it has like triple the bandwidth of DP1.4 and is the biggest advantage of the 5000 series cards over 4000.

But yeah, DQHD 300Hz on DP 2.0 seems doable

which is about 2/3'rds of full bandwidth

AMD 90 series/RDNA4 only UHBR 13.5 too

ivory rampart

in germany the 5070 ti is 200e more expensive.
and the cards perform almost identical

thin trout

and the market obviously agrees, because radeon marketshare continues to plummet (and it's obviously not a brand name effect either, because Intel's share is plummeting in favor of AMD on the CPU side).

Antilag 2.0 supports about 10 games, while Reflex over 200.

ivory rampart

i thnk the people that give a shit about these features are less than 1% of buyers

i cant tell the difference between fsr4 and dlss anymore.
both current versions look good

glossy glacier

i am happy with my 9070 xt. i try to avoid FSR as far as possible, but the one time i had to use it (MHWilds) it run quite well. and FSR4 was quite usable as well

thin trout

if that were the case, they would jump on a card like the 9070xt being 10% cheaper.

Many people like HWUB have ran polls showing that a large majority of their viewers (which are just a subset of PC gaming as a whole, but a significant and important one) both overwhelmingly use and heavily judge upscaling quality in their hardware purchases.

I have old man eyes so a lot of the subtle shit that bugs the hell out of some people just goes totally or mostly unotticed by me lol

#

As far as input lag... I... don't notice any so

thin trout

Reflex (anti lag 2.0) is a basic and extremely important feature.

An independant reviewer discovered a major flaw in the graphics pipeline in 2017 and disclosed it AMD, Nvidia and the public.

2 years later Nvidia released Reflex and it's in 200 games, heavily focused on the ones where it is needed most. 7 years later, Radeon released antilag 2 and now it's in 10 games.

as far as im concerned FSR4 and DLLS4 are equal

Reflexes entire reason for being is to improve performance, it doesn't cost anything

glossy glacier

ivory rampart
#

Also the price isnt realy a fair marker for the value.
nvidia just procuces less cards when people are buying less to keep the price as high as they want.

#

they have done this for years

thin trout
#

Radeon are free to sell more cards. They do the same. Every time Nvidia raises prices, they match it and they keep production at extremely low levels (rx9000 production is ~1/10'th of RTX 5000 series).

glossy glacier

also amd always published a driver level alternative, so i guess its more adopted ^^

it requires game integration

theres a reasson why prices havent gone down and its exactly that

public SDK for radeon: 2024

they would just sell the same thing till next gen

Correct, should probably add which driver version the test was done under
