For one the fans are doubling as exhaust

#

quiet too...

languid gulch
#

ok tell me i'm crazy if i do this

charred relic
#

Guess that happens when the fans don't have to spin all that fast

languid gulch
#

current AIO is up top with its provided fans, non RGB

#

i have 6 RGB PWM fans

#

that aren't as good of flow

charred relic
#

My rear fan is non rgb... and my rad fans

pure karma
#

swap em

#

no questions asked

charred relic
#

I kinda wish the rad fans were rgb... i could replace them easy enough

languid gulch
#

like half the airflow

charred relic
#

My 3 intake fans are all sync'd rgb

pure karma
#

stack them on top of eachother

charred relic
#

Thise lian li setups where the fans attack together

#

err attach

languid gulch
#

do you mean
fan-rad-fan
or
fan-fan-rad

charred relic
#

They might attack together when I'm not looking, I can't comfirm that they don't....

pure karma
pure karma
languid gulch
#

fuck you're right

charred relic
#

I like the modular design... i think these can go up to 4 sync'd or some such, I dunno I just needed 3 together

#

but I want one of these fans for the rear and 3 more for the rad lol

languid gulch
#

especially in a $250 fishtank case with 7 corsair RGB fans

charred relic
#

bit pricey but they are nice

languid gulch
#

oh i just grabbed the cheapass thermalright triple fan bundles off amazon for like $12

charred relic
#

My rear exhause is grey... guess what brand

pure karma
#

the small ones like the jonsbo i got are cheap but obviously dont have freedom levels of clearance and nothing but nvmes as an option for storage

languid gulch
charred relic
#

I'm glad they did a grey version

#

That brown really only works with certain color scehemes lol

languid gulch
#

ya know what

charred relic
#

I mean they look fine but the color isn't very... I dunno

languid gulch
#

with all the new woodwork on cases they might end up looking great on those

pure karma
#

i still dont know how i managed to make this build work๐Ÿคฃ

charred relic
#

Yeah they'd look good in those... my keyboard has wood grain ends and I keep the lights a brown color that's similar

#

so the led's match the ends

languid gulch
charred relic
#

I almost didn't run any SATA cables... due to only having a couple of drives that weren't that big

#

Then I'm like nah I can dual or triple boot onto these and threw them in

languid gulch
#

my case got horrible reviews from GN, and they were right on every single point

pure karma
charred relic
#

GN does good work heh

languid gulch
#

if i hadn't needed to add anything in, i would have been fine

#

but no

charred relic
#

They seem to give fair takes from what I've seen

languid gulch
#

to add in my HDDs i had to unmount the psu to pop the drive cage out

pure karma
thin trout
#

turns out that the thermal density of parallel processors is actually pretty low and if you just put a big ass heatsink on them, you can cool them really easily with low noise

languid gulch
pure karma
#

the HDD dosent fit tho lol

#

thats why i have the pannel off

#

i need to plug in the HDD whenever i want to use it and just leave it out lol

languid gulch
#

it probably couldn't handle the power tho ๐Ÿคฃ

#

intentionally?

#

oh yea vinyl burns

#

wait, do you mean transferring vinyl records?

languid gulch
#

probably

thin trout
#

this is 5090 gpu bound on satisfactory w/ air

languid gulch
#

oh i'm just on a 4090

#

"just"

pure karma
#

10/10 clearance

#

this drive is so darn fat

languid gulch
#

sexy

#

ok ngl i'd stuff this all in the smallest case i could

thin trout
#

between offset liquid freezer II cooler bracket and m.2 slot i had a measured 0.3mm gap once ๐Ÿ˜„

languid gulch
#

i wish it was easy to find the smallest volume case for a standard ATX mobo

#

even pcpp doesn't do a good job of it

pure karma
charred relic
#

I think one day soon I'm going to break out the beast server

#

the old Dell PowerEdge dual PIII

#

Complete with hot swappable everything.... and redundant everything

languid gulch
charred relic
#

... in theory it'll boot into Windows 2000

pure karma
#

Erm maybe?

#

Like i said this drive is very fat

languid gulch
#

maybe not with that sled

pure karma
#

its longer than the case is wide i think

languid gulch
#

got a 90 degree sata/power cable?

#

that might buy you enough room

pure karma
#

i dont think it would be enough

languid gulch
#

damn

#

ok, batshit suggestion

#

tape it to the PSU

#

or velcro

pure karma
#

or yq i could use the slower M.2 slot and just get another m.2 ๐Ÿ˜‚

languid gulch
#

also this case is so damn tiny that custom length shortened cables might be worth it

pure karma
#

this psu isent supported

#

for custom cables

languid gulch
charred relic
#

I hvae one more drive I could install to expand my storage... the first SSD I owned. 90GB

languid gulch
#

what capacity is the HDD?

pure karma
#

1TB

charred relic
#

i might plug it in just to see it's power on hours

languid gulch
#

oh that's nothing

pure karma
#

with like 10K hours on it

languid gulch
#

oof

pure karma
#

and the only thing its storing is a windows old install

languid gulch
#

yea spend the $20 for a 1tb NVMe

pure karma
#

use to be my game drive lol

#

back in the stone age of the alienware era

#

hence the blue rails

languid gulch
#

2 of my Dell 1TB HDDs have died within a year

#

started making the screaming sounds

pure karma
#

this one knocks

#

but works somehow

languid gulch
#

oh yea that's time to yank everything off it anyway

charred relic
#

lol

#

the click of DEATH

pure karma
#

i just find it funny that it could probably survive a freaking car crash in its original position where Alienware installed it originally

languid gulch
#

could just grab an external enclosure for it in the meantime

pure karma
#

Literally protected from every angle

charred relic
#

Sometimes I miss the whine of hard drives spinning up and clicking

languid gulch
#

floppy drive seating

pure karma
#

my new 8Tb one clunks sometimes

#

but its pretty rare

charred relic
#

If i buy a used server I'll get to experience more than enough hard drive sounds since It'll probably have 8-12+ drives in it

#

10k or 12k RPM SAS

#

One I looked at had pretty good hardware RAID on it too

pure karma
charred relic
#

i miss dial up sounds too ๐Ÿ˜„

pure karma
#

and its loud too so as long as the fans are at idle you can hear it in the background

charred relic
#

ATDT 4705012

#

I used to be able to speak Hayes heh

#

I look back and some of the stuff we used seems so silly now. Like my first modem (300bits/s) involved picking up a phone by hand, dialing the remote system, when it answered you'd press a button on the modem taking it off the hook, hang up the phone, modems establish communication

pure karma
#

dial up seems so distopian to me

#

calling a phone line to conect to the internet everytime just sounds unreal

charred relic
#

I used to know and be able to identify all of those parts of the communication by sound back then lol

#

sometimes even if it failed a reasonable bitrate

#

56k was very much an only existed on paper thing lol

#

Nobody ever actually connected at that

#

I guess maybe a great carrier... and the CO is in your front yard...

#

And the data center is within a few miles...

#

You might get 56k then ๐Ÿ˜„

#

We used to flex on the poor with our 14.4 modems :/

#

*poors

#

lol

#

I can't even imagine what the modern internet would be like at even 56k dialup

#

basically unusable i'd imagine

#

First thing I ever pirated from a BBS was Ms Pacman for PC. Took about 35+ minutes. I transfer that in less than a blink now

#

That's beyond night and day differences...

#

And the game didn't even matter, we barely played it. It was the newness and excitement of it all...

#

I mean I could send my buddy a file...without either of us leaving the house! Revolutionary!

languid gulch
#

i like the idea that if a product isn't in active production, a timer starts, say 5-10 years, and after that it becomes open source/expired

#

do something like pharma patents, where you have access & can make a generic version after 10 years

languid gulch
#

that's 12 fucking years

thin trout
#

how long have ssds been out

languid gulch
#

yes i broke out the calculator

#

uhhhh sounds like about that long for sanely priced ones for home use ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

100K hours is wild

languid gulch
#

yea for any drive

#

that's one you frame & give a proper funeral to

#

when it does go

pure karma
#

were gona start making cofins for hard drives now ๐Ÿ˜†

languid gulch
#

i was thinking a box frame

#

give it a little plaque

#

do one of those disassembly ones with the platters laid out

charred relic
#

oh wow I forgot i loaded two point earlier than tabbed out and never went back to it

pure karma
#

After a certain performance class a game running in tge background is just no longer noticeable hehe

charred relic
#

Well I'd imagine two point paused isn't exactly a resource hog haha

#

I didn't notice... for hours

pure karma
#

i donโ€™t notice even stuff like BeamNG which are not easy to run by any means

#

regular 30GB+ ram usage if you turn on mirrors and the whole shabang

gilded helm
swift oxide
#

Im not sure if someone can help me with this, but more heads thinks better then one,

I have a server that doesn't support PCIe boot, since i got a new machine i was gonna leave this one to be my dedicated NAS but i have a problem, the on-board SATA controller doesn't have enough SATA ports for two mirrored SSDs for TrueNAS plus all the disks i have to plug in, i have a couple of Intel Optane's 16GB NVMes i wanted to use for the system but my mobo doesn't support PCIe boot, i've played with GRUB around for a bit but the mobo doesn't expose the NVMe drives so i can't just make my own GRUB config to boot from them, they're invisible until the OS boots and sees them.

#

Is there another boot loader with NVMe support for systems that don't have PCIe boot options?

The mobo supports EFI (Supermicro X10SLL-F)

charred relic
#

you're just sort of dealing with owning that type of hardware...

#

If it's a server it's probably meant for a lot of SAS drives. As far as booting from an nvme i think if the bios doesn't support it then it probably isn't gonna happen without weird hacks that involve booting off another device

#

Which then defeats the entire point...

twin dew
charred relic
#

Yeah a modded bios or something but now you're getting into hacky territory

#

Those machines are just... different to deal with lol

elfin niche
#

unbelieavable, the game doesn't want to run on my i5 3320m, i'm bamboozledjacelul

swift oxide
#

Yeah i've seen some hacked BIOS around with NVMe support, but i don't trust them too much honestly

charred relic
#

I mean really if you want a bunch of storage and I had to guess... like I said you;; be buying some SAS drives

#

unless the server was never used for any storage really in which case it might not support many drives... usually they'll support a bunch though

#

im shopping used servers that have anywhere from 8 to 24 SAS drives installed

swift oxide
#

I mean, is not like is the end of the world, i can just buy an HBA for the hard disks and use the on-board SATA controller for the OS drives, but i'd rather go the cheapest option, which for me is NVMe at the moment

charred relic
#

For my personal NAS just having 1:1 redudancy isn't going to cut it, I want to have hot spares that can rock and roll with a couple of clicks

swift oxide
#

AS context, i have 5 HDDs that i have to plug in, the on board SATA controller only has 6 SATA ports

charred relic
#

Not surprising

#

I wouldn't have been surprised if you said 4 lol

swift oxide
#

And honestly i don't really trust running important servers with just a single OS drive

charred relic
#

well not unless you want to maybe reinstall the OS at some point

#

Everything I have on mine will be some level of RAID

#

Likely a combination of Raid 10 and 5 arrays

elfin niche
charred relic
#

if i need some fast disk access for some kind of disk caching or something I can carve out a multi drive 0 ๐Ÿ˜„

#

You'd be surprised how fast a few sriped 10k SAS drives are...

swift oxide
#

And also noisy and hot

charred relic
#

like one has a 2GB buffer hardware raid controller rated up to 12Gbps

#

Could you hit that... probably with enough drives I guess lol

twin dew
#

And if it doesn't also have battery backup, then using that in that RAID mode with buffer active is dangerous for data integrity.
Or UPS that will do controlled shutdown for the system as needed.

charred relic
#

It has a battery on board for one...

#

Just like my old PowerEdge, it can clear it's own buffer in a power outage

twin dew
#

Reason why I flashed mine to IT-mode.

twin dew
charred relic
#

It can't write it then, but it can write it later

twin dew
#

Or the battery went bad before being put on used market.

charred relic
#

Well people seriously running RAID need to know what they're getting into lol

#

Those servers aren't really for the common man though anyhow...

#

regardless of what disk tech they have heh

#

I'll have to break out a VGA cable if I even want to put a head on mine, but I probably never will.

#

In fact I have a 24" monitor with a VGA input I won't throw away unless it doies just in case I do need it...

#

Well and I have a 19" CRT that probably still functions heh

gentle osprey
#

anyone help everytime i press right click my mouse keeps canceling and pressing

#

what should i do?

charred relic
#

have you tried... rebooting ๐Ÿ˜„

gentle osprey
#

how

charred relic
#

my mom drive sme nuts with pc tech support because her answer is always no and im like 'what have i told you 5000 times, try rebooting first'

#

then she reboots, problem solved...

gentle osprey
#

do you mean restart?

twin dew
#

If just rebooting the computer doesn't help as asked for.

charred relic
#

if it's pressing then releasing it's probably a bad switch like he said

gentle osprey
#

ok ty

charred relic
#

it could be some weird software thing... but most likely thing is switch

#

try another mouse if it does the same thing you'll know heh

gentle osprey
#

i am going to try to reboot

charred relic
#

Yeah reboots are easy and free... and do indeed sometimes resolve some weird thing that's happening

gentle osprey
#

rip 300$ mouse

#

its the mouse thats bads

charred relic
#

like i said try another mouse... if it does the same thing you know it's in software

gentle osprey
#

i tryed its normal so its the mouse

charred relic
#

welp there ya go

#

i never have good luck with mice lasting which is why i don't spend much money on them now

twin dew
#

How old?
In some cases even very expensive mice can use crap longevity switches that go bad in few years.

charred relic
#

keyboard i'll spend a few bones on

twin dew
#

They can be replaced, but that needs opening the mice, and soldering.

gentle osprey
#

5 years old

twin dew
#

And getting new suitable switches can sometimes be pain.

charred relic
#

if i pay 300 for a mouse i'm gonna have to already know i can source switches lol

#

so i can fix the damn thing if it dies... that's too damn much for a mouse

gentle osprey
#

i know

#

i was a little kid when i spent all my money on it

twin dew
charred relic
#

don't feel bad when i was younger i spent 200 dollars in way back dollars on an mp3 player that would hold like 2 songs at decent quality lol

gentle osprey
#

wait

#

i think i fixed it

charred relic
#

I was one of the... foolish early adopters lol

#

get in car, plug mp3 player in, pick which of the two songs i'd like to hear

gentle osprey
#

i saw that it was a broken so i taped the thing and it worked

charred relic
#

i have a redragon mouse right now ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

twin dew
#

So some kind of plastic shell damage?
The actual microswitches are way inside and look usually something like this:

charred relic
#

My mouse is basic... my keyboard is quite nice though

twin dew
#

Where that small white thing is the actual "button"

charred relic
#

i used to do GH hardware mods for people

#

the guitars after GH3 felt like shit on the strum bar because of the switch, it wasn't clicky like the old ones

#

i'd replace that switch tto make them feel like the GH3 guitars

#

Very similar little microswitch

gentle osprey
#

i have a green airow not a white line

charred relic
#

I kinda miss GH... wish they hadn't run it into the ground

gentle osprey
#

BRUH I REALLY REGRET BUYING A MORE EXPENCIVE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE THAN THE WHOLE PC

pure karma
#

well no shit

#

spending anymore than 100 on peripherals is pure stupid

#

i can make an exception for headphones at times but everything else 100 MAX

charred relic
#

i can make an exception for... headphones, microphones and keyboards...

#

or specialty game controllers

#

like for flight simming you can't even get a decent starter setup for much less than 2 bills

#

hell if i could afford it my sim cockpit would be worth more than my PC..

maiden coyote
languid gulch
#

depends on the quality of the item

charred relic
#

My keyboard was aboutg 150 USD

#

like 154..155 something like that

languid gulch
#

i do have to say that my $100 hexgears keyboard is way better than my dogshit $100 Logi MX Keys that lasted barely a year before 2 keys snapped off

charred relic
#

Would I buy this keyboard again having use it for months now... 100% yes

languid gulch
#

some stuff is worth the cost, other stuff is just overpriced garbage

charred relic
#

In fact I'll probably swap the switches in this one out to tweak it that one last step heh

#

I'm going with the lightest force switches... as soon as they have them in stock again anywhere...

languid gulch
#

i'm tempted to do some of the mechanical keyboard softening/insulation stuff

charred relic
#

Well they technically have the smaller packs but I'd need 3 to do the whole keyboard and have some spares... more expensive that way

#

This one has a fair bit of damping stuff built in apparently

#

You can upgrade it a bit tho

languid gulch
#

i have a suspicion about the next big thing added into keyboards

charred relic
#

These are overall my favorite switches ever. Really my favorite keyboard overall. I'll still always have a thing for typing on buckling spring switches though.

#

Shit for gaming, great for typing heh

languid gulch
#

VR tracking/tactile sensitivity on the keys that you can see while in-world

charred relic
#

we probably aren't that far away from feeling it too tbh

#

with gloves of some kind

#

Right now though VR is still just kinda... I dunno stagnant

#

But this is also the only time it's actually stuck at all

languid gulch
#

yea, i have a CV1 and i have 0 interest in upgrading

charred relic
#

and it's been tried over and over and over

#

And every time I hoped it would finally catch on but the problem was hardware, we have that now

#

Good stuff is still just a bit pricey... like you can spend a grand on a pc and easily enother grand on the vr crap

#

that corners some folks like me out of a full blown rig

#

I could afford it, but I'm not willing to spend that much ya know

languid gulch
#

maybe having the visor being fully see through as an option would be neat, like full FoV pixels, and then have a tracker for your keyboard/mouse where the software's fast enough to keep those pixels transparent and you can see where they are

charred relic
#

not on that particilar thing anyhow... not yet

#

There is actually some neat VR stuff now though... and like I said it's sticking around which is a good sign

languid gulch
#

it definitely has a lot of utility

charred relic
#

even my old occulus 2 is entertaining

#

stuff like vader and beat saber... there is this one tablebop game where you are actually picking up dice and moving peices like youare in the room

#

can't remember the name of that one...

languid gulch
#

i do wish that more games would start incorporating VR as an option

charred relic
#

Oh and pinball is awesome in br

#

Minecraft is neat... def interesting at the very least...

#

But what I really really want is higher end stuff with a good solid video card to VR flight sim

#

I've tested the waters and it is amazeballs heh

languid gulch
#

it does suck that there's no easy way to go from keyboard to wands

charred relic
#

YES

#

that drives me nuts setting stuff up when you have to go between pc and headset

#

it's like headset on, off, on, off, where's the wands, shit i can't find the right one, off on off on lol

#

like holy shit im tooi tired to play now lol

#

Oh I haven't tried it personally yet but I guess driving games are dope AF in VR too

languid gulch
#

yea i've heard that too

#

i can't get used to not being able to see peripherals besides the wands

#

and even then it's annoying to not remember a specific button name and not be able to just look down and verify

charred relic
#

I should get my occulus 2 out and mess with it again

#

old tech, still entertaining

#

err i guess it's "quest 2"

#

A friend of mine upgraded and sold me his 2's on the cheap

languid gulch
#

lol same

#

got a CV1, 3 sensors, and an xbox wireless controller with the big fat adapter for $250 in 2020

#

oh and a 4m usb 3.0 active cable

charred relic
#

I gotta say when im playing something like golf or whatever and wander out of the boundry

#

that snap back into reality is... odd

languid gulch
#

oh i have 0 interest in VR golf ๐Ÿคฃ

#

i can't do it irl

charred relic
#

Like oh yeah im standing int he middle of my garage with the door open flailing around like a weirdo

#

I bet people would drive past here like 'wtf is wrong with that dude'

languid gulch
#

i did pop out the nosepiece on mine so i can at least see a little bit down

charred relic
#

over here playing beat saber

#

My glasses are an issue with mine

#

my old ones were's quite as wide and fit better... they sell an adapter i need to get it

languid gulch
charred relic
#

i've been looking at projectors for outside stuff

languid gulch
#

got a big white wall?

charred relic
#

no but i can buy a big white screen

#

JKust have it drop down where the garage door is heh

languid gulch
#

if my neighbors house wasn't so close we could probably use my wall for it

#

hunt down some old stadium seating to throw in the yard

charred relic
#

The garage door is white but not flat... might look ok but i'd just get a screen

#

closed theaters are a good place to get sound treatment sometimes

#

one time i got a bunch of the curtains for free, they were just throwing it away

#

too bad the screens are too big to install at home lol

languid gulch
#

one of our theaters shut down years ago, and we grabbed some of the old side panels from the seats with the logo on it

charred relic
#

but you might find seats that way

#

Businesses, some of them, throw away so much stuff

languid gulch
#

oh yea

charred relic
#

especially IT... good lord the stories my buddy tells

#

like he's snaggedm e all kinds of perfectly good but used goodies

#

like a rack, a rack ups...

languid gulch
#

there's a place on the west end of our intl airport where a lot of that is stored

charred relic
#

a cisco POE switch

#

enterprise grade shit

languid gulch
#

it's comparable to new big box store stuff, but with it being commercial & not that old, it can be worth it

charred relic
#

unfortunately no servers... but networking hardware he can get me

languid gulch
#

i'm a sucker for adapters

pure karma
languid gulch
#

๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

spending 10x the price for the same experience with only better sounds is beyond me

charred relic
#

When HD was fairly new I had a guy tell me that HD was a scam

#

They just wanna sell you a new TV...

pure karma
#

Like brother how do people spend 1000$ on a keyboard and be like yea its good

charred relic
#

Never mind the fact I'd already experience 1080 content... def wasnt' a scam lol

languid gulch
charred relic
#

I got a Keychron K4 HE...it's sexy

pure karma
#

My keyboard is an off the shelf scoria that was 60 bucks cad

languid gulch
#

yea, mine was $100. and so far it's the best keyboard i've ever owned

#

idc so much that it's mechanical

languid gulch
#

i do like that if a key switch dies i can just replace it instead of the entire goddamn keyboard

night girder
#

hot swap yeah

languid gulch
charred relic
#

A new Model M is more expensive than this keyboard... and I'd like to buy one at some point ๐Ÿ˜„

languid gulch
pure karma
languid gulch
#

yup

night girder
charred relic
#

I'm a sucker for the classics... and nothing feels like buckling spring so there';s also that...

languid gulch
#

but all of my cheap keyboards have a single key that fails and wrecks the entire thing

languid gulch
#

oh and the wrist rest is spring clip attached

#

not magnets or just sits next to it

#

so it's great for using it on the couch or laying down too ๐Ÿคฃ

night girder
#

I might get a 75% for gaming. Not sure which one.

languid gulch
#

my muscle memory on 100% won't let me use one of those ๐Ÿคฃ

night girder
#

Yeah, I am not sure yet about it.

#

The K70 corsair is holding up... more or less ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

i dont know what to think of my keyboard

#

because its sounds mechanical even if it isent lol

languid gulch
#

i don't mind anyone's preferences

#

i'm just glad i found one that i hope i can use for a really long time

#

i do wish i could get some kind of core charge or mass credit for all the keyboards i've tried for the last like 20 years

pure karma
#

ok well first of all i just came to the realisation that i nerver use my pinky on a keyboard which i had nerver noticed before even tho i type every day

languid gulch
#

clean the fucking doritos out from underneath it

pure karma
#

its too hard

#

my other one has yogurt on the pcb it could be worst

languid gulch
#

ew

night girder
languid gulch
#

"yogurt" ๐Ÿคฃ

pure karma
#

the numberpad on my secondary one is filled with probably moldy yogurt by now

languid gulch
#

that's also why i love this thing, just popping off the keycaps and cleaning it

night girder
#

that's why I want 75%, less keys to clean hehe

#

smaller surface, less dirt. And I want switches that are more silent.

also being able to rekey them in some games to do different stuff from the number row is great

maybe, never do that either, it's too far away from my left hand.

some games are dumb (or smart i guess) and will recognize if your keyboard doesn't have the numpad

I can see it work but you have to be used to it I guess

night girder

I will still keep this keyboard anyway. So not a problem.

languid gulch

sometimes i'll hotkey the numpad options onto my side buttons, and i'm afraid that switching to a TKL will yank that as an option

I don't think it matters. The mapping for the buttons is done by software anyway.

languid gulch

i'd assume not, but also there's plenty of dumb shit out there that devs do

this is my mouse now but the switchs are broken

#

should i get this Razer Viper V3 HyperSpeed

#

it 70$

twin dew
#

Razer Synapse is basically mandatory for any Razer mice, and needs login, and at least had significant spyware features AFAIK.

#

And Razer has traditionally used microswitches that go bad in few years to cut costs.

#

Otherwise usually very good.

languid gulch
#

i can't make the call like that for anyone, peripherals are way too personal ๐Ÿคฃ

specs are one thing, the feel of it is something else

But needed to do switch swaps on all of them at some point.

twin dew

Don't think I'd be able to recommend any mice to anyone..

Its very very much debatable, as I don't think Shaq would them mouse that you use for laptops ect :)

And do you want the MMORPG version with the 12 button side option.. and so and so fourth.

charred relic
#

I'm like 'whoa that's cool' and he's like oh sorry i didn't know you could see the screen and was gonna move it and im like no don't

#

I have the 12 side buttons

#

I find use for them for a few things

#

I don't even play MMO's but they are super useful for macros and things in various apps... like I have a bunhc of shortcuts in my DAW mapped to them

#

And stuff for toggling/changing patches/vsts etc

feral drift
#

Personally I'm super happy with my Logitech G903, with that Powerplay mousepad - wireless mouse, without needing to plug in a charger which usually just sits in the mouse permanently if it was required..

charred relic
#

I have a footcontgrol for some stuff but it's often more convenient on mnouse if I already have ahold of it for something anyhow

twin dew
#

Razer used to be fine for most part, outside the use of low longevity switches.
But then they went mad.

charred relic
#

A lot of people seem to like those logitechs

#

I'd assume they must be pretty good

#

I seem to recall they were a bit pricey but whatever

twin dew
feral drift
#

Razer used to be GOAT for gaming peripherals, but as Baldur had mentioned.. The need for that bloatware razer software, which caused more problems than it solved was enough for me to throw the mouse into the bin for good

charred relic
#

I shouldn't need to log into anything to use a mouse

#

Having to do so is so incredibly silly

#

If things were like they used to be I wouldn't run Windows either... but that's not currently an option.

#

I spent years with 0 windows machines

feral drift
twin dew
charred relic
#

I wouldn't be against replacing switches if I really really liked the mouse

#

I haven't found one I like that much yet

twin dew
#

Feel of the buttons would change depending on exact model.
But usually there is also longer longevity variant of the same exact switch available.

feral drift
charred relic
#

depending on where you source parts it's very much a you get what you pay for thing

twin dew
#

For example Omron switches are available at least in in 1M, 5M, 10M, 20M and 50M click variants.
And way too often mice use the 1M click variant (when no click rating in the model markings)

charred relic
#

like there might be 4 different brands at differnet price points and the more expensive one is probably worht it

twin dew
#

And also often use too low current so the contacts don't self-clean.

#

To "save" on power.

charred relic
#

Plus with parts like that you are talking about pennies usually

#

I dunno why I say penny when no such thing ever existed here :/

feral drift
#

I did read about Optical switches being introduced as a more common switch type.

Guess its a better option, as you probably can just 3D print the "switch mechanic" if it breaks

gentle osprey
charred relic
#

Maxeek bascially if it's electrically compatible and will fit... it'll work heh

twin dew
#

Basically microswitches have minimum current spec, on how much current there should be over the switch when it is clicked, so the contact surfaces clean themselves from oxidation.
Depends on switch and the contact plating material the specific subvariant is using.

charred relic
#

like as long as the outside part is making propercontact, and it fits... if it's tghe right part or not doens't matter much... as long as the end result is ok

twin dew
gentle osprey
#

why

charred relic
#

Sometimes with small parts I don't have an exact part number I just know the connectivity and dimensions and just have to find what will work for me

feral drift
#

There is too many variables of options in regards of brands

twin dew
#

Because there isn't any single or few manufacturers that should be recommended.
As that is one of the last things in choosing a mouse.

gentle osprey
#

what mouse do you have

twin dew
#

And for example that short microswitch life is hard pass for some, and for some it just means they get replacement switches and change when needed etc.

#

Currently using BenQ Zowie EC1-C:s
Because of the base shape lineage with good sensor.
But that shape isn't the one you want.

charred relic
#

My problem with switch replacement is there are 1000 other things I'd rather do on the bench than replace mouse switches heh

gentle osprey
#

i want a good mouse for gaming and i want it to last long

charred relic
#

I have 3 boards out there I need to paint and label enclosures for as it is

twin dew
#

Philips Fidelio X2HR original model with older version analog ModMic.

charred relic
#

And the International House of Overdrive sounds amazing ๐Ÿ˜„

feral drift
#

Well if they were still in production - Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 was probably the best mouse I've had to day :D

charred relic
#

intellimouse!

#

lol haha oh lordy

#

haven't heard that menioned in forever

twin dew
charred relic
#

I bet somebody sells mmo gamer gloves don't they

#

for your mouse hand... for grip and etc... surely...right?

feral drift
#

Personal experience.. Stay away from mouses that has these weight block options.. Its in my opinion obsolete and totally unnecessary and a gimick at best

charred relic
#

or not somebody needs to get ont hat ASAP, thank me later.

twin dew
#

And when there are three common mouse grips, peoples hands are different sizes, and how much we are accustomed to move the mouse has wide variance between the extreme ends...

charred relic
#

I already feel like enough of a dork without a special MMO glove

twin dew
#

Where for the last one it can be between 20+ cm for going across the screen to 1cm for going across the screen.

#

Or for 180/360 degree turn around in game.

#

And for Windows desktop it also depends on the exact resolution used etc.

charred relic
#

I hasv the ype of freiends that would ROAST me if they caught me wearing an MMO glove lol

languid gulch
#

god i wish games had the GTA:SA rear camera button

charred relic
#

And I wouldn't even be mad... because I'd wanna roast me too :/

twin dew
#

And once you know the shape and size of the mouse shell you want, and what CPI you need, then it goes into the different sensors being used too.
If you want "perfect" sensor, or if some acceleration effects can be allowed etc.

languid gulch
#

i want my current mouse, but with the logitech infiniscroll capability

twin dew
#

But basic first step is finding that right shape and size.
And then looking what else is available in close enough to same shell shape.

charred relic
#

I hate switching mice and having to tweak all that shit again

#

I'm picky about a few things in life... like mouse sensitivity/speed... and guitar picks

#

I'm pretty fussy with guitar picks lol

#

my neighr can pick up a rock off the ground and use it and no biggie... im like -cringe-

#

Deep click...

#

two two activation points?

#

Guessing...

twin dew
#

Which is why I have been on that same Intellimouse 3.0 shape since used that, switching from that to two generations of Razer DeathAdders and then to BenQ EC1:s where I had to switch away from first ones I had to -C:s because of the high frequency noise the sensor in the first ones did in some situations.
Mine were "post"fix, but still had the issue.

3000BC we celebrated the rain with a holiday. Let's bring it back ๐Ÿ˜„

visual tree
#

We are really good at this: "Connecting a holiday with paid leave involves strategically planning time off around public holidays to maximize your time away from work. This can be done by either taking paid leave before or after a public holiday, or by strategically using "bridge days" (weekdays between a holiday and a weekend) to create longer periods of leave. "

I tried doing a rain dance once... unforunately I don't have enough Choctaw blood :/

#

So it got more sunny...

dire igloo
night girder
#

That would be funny to see happen.

dire igloo
#

Historical holidays, like independence day or Union day should stay tho, because they're of national importance

visual tree
dire igloo
night girder
#

I care little about the holidays themselves. I am invested in history anyway, I don't need silly little days to remind me of history.

charred relic
#

I'm whatever is getting today off religion

night girder
#

But a nice dday off, I don't mind.

#

But the why and how, eh don't care.

#

Aren't half of them "fake" anyway? Like manipulated or on the wrong day.

#

Or is that with some of the religious ones that aren't even on the correct days.

dire igloo
night girder
#

I know some of our German holidays got replaced by the Catholics when they conquered everything here.

#

Back then Belgium (it wasn't a country) was part of the German ... tribes I guess. Because it was all tribes here ๐Ÿคฃ

Im a whatevergetstodayoffatarian

You got a good netflix show about the hisotry of the german tribes.

charred relic

As a Dudeist.

And the Romans trying to conquer.

charred relic

And yes I can do a legally binding wedding....

#

(that's all marriage really is, a contract...)

night girder

This one. It's german Fireworker2000. You might like it.

dire igloo
night girder

And it's rooted in history. It really happened.

visual tree

I consider gaming a religion and demand government to implement a holiday for gamers!

charred relic

oh yeah are all pagan holdouts, easier to convert that way

dire igloo
night girder
#

The romans captured young Germans and tried to brainwash them into roman officers over 10 years. To then conquer Germania.
Well it didn't planned out as they hoped to.

charred relic

they already do something on that day... so now they'll jsut...do something a little different

dire igloo

dire igloo
night girder

Roman history is actually pretty simple; "Oh the betrayal, I didn't see it comming" ๐Ÿคฃ

night girder

And it's a german show. So I wanted to support it.

#

It's still Netflix show so ... eh.

charred relic
#

Ho ho ho comsume product ho ho ho

night girder

But I cannot help to support this show. Focusing on our real history of western europe.

dire igloo

Worst is when they tell kids "real" santa lives in Finland and they earn a lot of money from this

In Germany, we celebrate Saint Nicholas Day on 06.12. every year
Kids clean their shoes and put them out the night before, then "Saint Nikolaus" (their parents) put sweets and maybe small gifts in there for a nice surprise in the morning.

My mom always makes sure to pick a chocolate Nikolaus - with actual Bishop's clothing, not the Coca Cola Santa redesign.
She said it's always an exhausting search

night girder
#

Oh no... I don't like where this is heading hehe

dire igloo

My friend was debating me on what people first think when they hcear christmas

he actually thought it would be jesus, I said tree

dire igloo

he calls his mom and says whats the first thing you think of if i mentione christmas and she's like 'oh i dunno dressing up the tree'

dire igloo
dire igloo

charred relic

my whol ejoke was the tree was more poular than the man himself

night girder

We call it different. Totally different.

Or wait. The name changed.

in the last few years because of backlash.

dire igloo

Btw, I grew up believing in the "Christkind" (child Christ? I guess?)

night girder

I grew up believing in "Kabouters"

dire igloo
#

Santa always was a corpo capitalist Western thing

night girder
#

You probably know what I am speaking off ๐Ÿ˜„

charred relic
#

I found out Santa wasn't real because I was a little detective

#

and it was might strange that I saw a roll of paper the same as what "santa" brought

dire igloo
charred relic

under their bed...

night girder
charred relic
#

Perhaps Santa was just framing them... oh no have I made a critical error

visual tree
#

Beter behave or Krampus will pay you a visit on Christmas and whip you really good!

charred relic

is santa real?

dire igloo
charred relic

shit...

night girder

Roetpiet now ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

Because the whole world was pissed off we called it Zwarte Piet. Even it was not their holiday. Hypocrits.

dire igloo
#

Probably cuz black facing political issue

night girder
#

Exactly. Bunch of hypocrisy.

dire igloo
#

It's really weird cuz iirc Zwarte Piet is a coal-related character, so it makes sense that he's full of soot

night girder
#

Yeah... duh

#

chimney????

dire igloo
#

idk why Santa would take a guy from a coal mine with him tho

night girder
#

Oh, here it is told. That the color is because of the chimney they come through.

dire igloo
dire igloo
#

Got reminded of a funny Cartoon rn tho, lemme find it

night girder
#

Sometimes also a glass of milk.

dire igloo
#

"we got new sponsor deals"
(coughing)

night girder
#

It was a whole ritual before going to bed.

#

I really liked it as a kid. Never had any questions about it.

dire igloo
#

Teaching kids about traditions is important imo - but you should always reflect on what these traditions teach.

Cuz for a lot of things, tradition is nothing but peer pressure from dead people

night girder
#

Eh, I didn't view it as that at all.

#

As a kid; "free gifts".

#

As a adult; "giving gifts and see kids smile".

#

and spending time together with who is important for you is also a big factor to me. When it comes to traditions.

#

In the end, I think it's about joy more than anything else. And connection.

#

If we had a holiday to honor all space chickens, I wouldn't mind. Aslong as it brings joy and connection ๐Ÿคฃ

dire igloo
#

However, you shouldn't need an occasion to spend time together, appreciate each other or gift tokens of that appreciation

#

I'd say it's more fulfilling to do all that without any occasion - it takes away the context of "peer pressure"

dire igloo
night girder
#

Because I agree, we shouldn't need all this to connect and have fun together.

#

but then again, having a few days that reminds us of it isn 't that bad.

My satisfactory brainrot has caused me to realize that outside of a couple extra physics principles and maybe some material science, PCB design is hardly any different from belt design in satis

The most complicated part for DIY stuff would boil down to programming FPGA's and controllers, second most complicated would be reading datasheets and getting the right parts. Hmm, maybe I will start doing DIY tools

integrated framegen is better ofc, since it can do stuff like interpolate the underlying image with more data and then composite the UI afterwards

I'm looking at recovery machines... damn they're expensive.. and there's a vevor one for like $300 but I found out if I get caught using it I can lose my cert because it's not epa certified. ._.

#

I get it, if it explodes while connected to an appliance and recovery tank filled with r-12 that would not be good.. but the approved ones are $600 and up

charred relic
#

The freon goes all around all around the freon goes all around

jagged snow
#

I was blown away by how spendy they were

maiden coyote
#

The idiot boxes? Yeah you pay for stupid lol

#

You can do everything those machines do and then some with a good set of gauges, vacuum pump, recovery pump and tank, and a scale.

#

And it'll cost a fraction of that, but you have to know what you're doing.

#

Oh and a good set of thermometers too.. those are kind of optional for vehicles because the charge is on a sticker.

jagged snow
#

Of course, but the idiot boxes are also set and forget

#

Which is nice

maiden coyote
#

If you have an issue temperature and pressure is what paints the picture of what's happening inside that system

jagged snow
#

And you can hand it to a technician after 15 minutes of training and trust them not to vent a couple pounds of r134 on accident

jagged snow
#

Although in cars it's pretty much always just a compressure failure or refrigerant leakage

maiden coyote
#

Yeah, rubber hoses are great for that

jagged snow
#

Lol

#

Or any metal line after a decade or so

maiden coyote
#

And orings.. I've done about 4 mvacs so far.. and I've had one compressor failure and the rest have been orings on the discharge

jagged snow
#

More than anything else, a UV die setup is great for cars

winged valley
maiden coyote
# jagged snow More than anything else, a UV die setup is great for cars

yeah, I worked on a 03 buick that had dye in the oil from the factory.. that made it super easy to find the leak. I'm still a bit confused as to how to add dye to a system without pumping it down first.. I'll probably just recover and pull a vacuum and add the dye and then refill it when I've got to do it.

#

recover, vacuum, dye, vaccuum, charge.

jagged snow
#

๐Ÿ‘

maiden coyote
#

they don't exactly tell people that during the winter you need to run your ac at least once a week to keep the compressor shaft seal lubricated.

jagged snow
#

Nope

maiden coyote
#

I think it's once a month before they run a risk of leaking, but more is better.

jagged snow
#

It helps that modern cars run it with the defrost setting for dehumidification

maiden coyote
#

teslas and EV's usually have heatpumps for heat I think.. I don't see why they would use a resistive heater in an EV

jagged snow
#

Some older EVs did use resistive heating ๐Ÿ˜„

maiden coyote
#

I would expect a tesla to have a hermetic compressor tho

jagged snow
#

Including tesla

#

But tesla are also the genuises that at one point had a vacuum-powered brake booster that required a dedicated pump rather than just using an electric booster ๐Ÿ˜„

jagged snow
maiden coyote
#

they have some kind of air ride thing too on some.. I had to tow one because it broke

jagged snow
#

Yeah, that's standard on many of them

#

They've got adjustable ride height and stiffness

#

Mostly on the cybertruck and performance trims iirc

maiden coyote
#

I still want one, even after all the mess.. I still want the regular tesla car

jagged snow
#

I'd love just about any EV once the prices come down into my price range

#

Going to be a decade or so before that happens

#

And I'd rather spring for a phev than full bev

maiden coyote
#

sadly.. unless the slate comes out.. and doesn't suck.. or we buy used

jagged snow
#

But my daily commute is short enough that I can bike in the summer and could easily do it on battery with a phev during the winter

maiden coyote
#

I could probably make do with a tesla with 50% of it's battery left.. I just want one to go back and forth to work

jagged snow
#

Yeah

maiden coyote
#

roughly 20 miles round trip.

jagged snow
#

I've heard nothing but good about the chevy volt for a budget phev

maiden coyote
#

arn't those like $35 grand?

#

(usa price)

jagged snow
#

I see them in decent condition for 10-15k currently

#

So give it another couple years and I might be able to pick one up at my local auto auction for 5k or so

maiden coyote
#

5k I could do. unless I start making bank, and get everything paid off.. and even if I do.. I probably will still never buy a new car.

jagged snow
#

I've never been able to afford anything other than used

#

Current drive is a taurus that I picked up for under a grand with a blown head gasket

#

Fixed that and haven't had a single non-maintineance issue in 50k miles

#

~30mpg too

maiden coyote
#

I've got a 93 c1500 that I acquired for free, I've probably put 2k into it fixing various shit. I still need to fix the coolent temp gauge (it's the cluster) and replace the power steering pump. and a 2016 rouge with the dreaded cvt that I bought for 7k.

jagged snow
#

Nice ๐Ÿ˜„

maiden coyote
#

the rouge is my daily to and from work and groceries.. truck is for.. truck stuff

jagged snow
#

With what my financial situation has been, I can't justify spending more on a car

#

This one was worthless when I bought it and will still be worthless when I quit driving it

#

I'd eventually like to have something that rides a little nicer or looks a little cleaner or whatever
But this is economical

#

And lets me put a bit of extra money into hobbies

maiden coyote
#

which makes it a good value, because you got it for next to nothing, and besides fuel and insurance you're good.

#

speaking of blown head gaskets.. I've towed 2 this weekend with blown head gaskets.. both of them filled the coolent tankwith oil lol

#

one was a 2024 chevy 2500 duramax and the other was a 98 ford e250 handicap van

jagged snow
#

I always find that unbelievable

#

Or washer fluid in the oil

#

Can't believe either of those happen as often as they do
