If my PC shuts down randomly and the event viewer shows a kernel power even (so power loss?) should i be worried?
happened 3 times this year, and at first i contributed it to some Power issues, where power is down for a split second and trips up the pc.
I didnt see my light flicker and its in the same socket
but could that also be a sign of a bad powersupply?
if it is, how would i tell the difference.

twin dew
dire igloo
#

Your PC is on the brink of explosion, you better run before it levels your building

ivory rampart
#

its a 2 year old 1000w Seasonic, so i still got 8 years of warranty left

#

i was not doing anything heavy, just coding

twin dew
#

Ok, so if not light flickering, then probably not grid glitch sourced, didn't read correctly.

twin dew
ivory rampart
#

hmm, the monitors im not too sure off.
but i think the desklamp i use did not noticeably flicker.

completely shut down

#

had to press the start button

twin dew
#

So PSU protection, or MB protection.

ivory rampart
#

i tihnk the first time it happend it did turned itself on again.
but not the last 2 times

dire igloo
#

I've done "a bit of coding" during the practical part of my bachelor's degree - couple hundred lines of VBA to automate a CSV analysis.
Safe to say, any time I made my code run the analysis from the very beginning, my laptop was essentially frozen for half an hour

#

So "just coding" can be an incredibly high load depending on the size of your project and the skill of the coder

ivory rampart
#

well yeah, but its my degree project that i started on TODAY... so not that much going on yet

dire igloo
#

YET

ivory rampart
#

it wont be anything heavy, pretty much just some frontend with very little going on in the backend

twin dew
#

But no easy way to tell if it is PSU protections tripping, or motherboard protections tripping.

ivory rampart
#

well on that, i did just upgrade to a new CPU and mainboard.
it happened both before and after

#

would that not make it less likely to be the mainboard?

twin dew
#

Yes.

ivory rampart
#

i gotta pay more attention to the monitors next time it happens.
im realy not sure if they stayed on or turned off

#

hehe no work was lost at least

dire igloo
#

Holy fuck, I just remembered back to one of my uni projects, having to use design patterns n shit
I didn't realize how much y'all were carrying me through that assignment

ivory rampart
#

my system is incapable of drawing over 700w

dire igloo
#

heh, challenge accepted

#

(it'll shit itself before going there)

twin dew
#

On MB end, too high VRM temperatures, or actual VRM output going too high because of swings, or some CPU temperatures hitting shutdown limit (instead of just throttle limit) can cause MB to shut the PSU down fast.

#

etc.

#

On PSU end it is stuff like overcurrent, short circuit, overtemperature etc. that are monitored and cause trip if needed.

ivory rampart
#

im assuning what it readsas the graphics temp is the CPU temp

twin dew
#

And it can also be that the monitoring is reading wrong and trips below the intended limit etc.

twin dew
ivory rampart
#

dont got anything installed for that, but case has airflow and isnt clogged by dust

#

so temps should be fine

twin dew
ivory rampart
#

what was that program again

twin dew
#

HWiNFO

#

But more likely that the PSU has some kind of protection monitoring failure that makes one trip at way too low level.

#

In this case.

ivory rampart
#

i dont see anything odd

#

CPU is undervolted, but since it was also happening on the old CPU/mobo i dont tihnk that its the issue

twin dew
#

Would cause crashes and reboots AFAIK, not shutdowns.

#

But basically the logical sources at this point would be intermittent short duration shorts in something that was in both systems.
And some PSU protection limit being too low because of manufacturing fault or like.

ivory rampart
#

if it happens again ill open a support ticket at Seasonic, surely they can walk me through some steps

pure karma
#

cables bent too sharp probably

twin dew
#

Ah, I did hit case with my own CPU that just right negative Curve Optimizer caused the MB protections to trip and shut the system down in some specific swing load test.
As it probably caused the VRM output to start oscillate because of just the right VCore request swings.

pure karma
#

or you know, the obvious, that untested undervolt you did

#

if i want to treat you like you treat me

ivory rampart
#

you assume its untested

twin dew
#

Was able to trigger it three times, and went away with different offset.
For both more and less offset.

high ivy
#

Speaking of doing stupid shit to hardware...

I wanted to build a new PC and wanted it to look striking. Not being a big RGB fan (of big RGB fans) I cast around for inspiration and decided on something... unique.

Inspiration and current progress. This is just the front case, the rear is still being painted, but everything is wired up and functional.

(It's stupid because the case is just barely big enough to fit a mini ITX system in. The fans are only 60mm. Cable management is effectively impossible. It's gonna be a hot boi.)

languid gulch
#

ok that'd be amazing

languid gulch

twin dew

Garmin avionics contain that kind of thing already in some models, and they have been triggered in real use already.

They do a lot still but as far as the majority of time int he sky it's just waypoint to waypoint

they are turning knobs from time to time...

twin dew

charred relic
#

that's why if i do a long haul in flight sim i gotta skip parts because it's just... doing nothing lol

#

Yeah it could be me... flying your plane

#

from right where im sitting...

#

I do know how to take a 747 from dark to cruise

#

landings usually go fairly well 🙂

twin dew
#

Flying a functional plane in IFR is much much easier thing than autonomous car for example.
And when a plane declares emergency, it is ATCs job to direct everyone else away from the plane, no matter what that plane does.

#

The pilots have been in there basically just in case the plane goes to less than fully functional for long time.
And at some point even the big airlines will be going to single-pilot operations.

charred relic
#

But don't worry they'll give me at least a couple dozen hours training I'll have the landings nailed by then for sure. You'll be fine.

twin dew
#

But not there yet, not because of technology, but because of pilot resistance etc.

#

Basically automation, one pilot, possible emergency remote pilot option as fallback if both of previous fail.
But basically at this time, whenever stuff goes to shitter, there often is too much workload even for two pilots.

# feral drift The information on wikipedia could be written by anyone..

Anyone that wants to use Wikipedia as a source has to treat it like any other potential source.
Wikipedia is actually BETTER because anyone can make edits - if an encyclopedia has a mistake, you won't ever see it changed unless you constantly buy the newest revision.
At which point: put the encyclopedia online to make revisions update live and allow anyone who spots a mistake to either report it or change it themselves.
ta-daa, we just re-invented the concept of Wikipedia

Hell, your argument about AI even stronger undermines the credibility of published scientific papers - if it's not caught upon publication, it will remain public forever

Hynix 24Gb M-die clocks better than Hynix 16Gb M or A-die.
ZenTimings is still the gold standard, but uses vulnerable driver.
HWiNFO now can show almost all the same information, but not all.

ZenTimings vs. HWiNFO (not exact same latencies in use, need to go back to the tight ones)

twin dew

Depends on plane how high the chart goes.

How high temperatures did the plane manufacturer test to.
Some test to lower max, depending where the plane is expected to be used.

And if some operator was willing to pay for the testing, and opportunity to test was found, they could be tested higher.
But that is also part of the problem, you need the conditions in real world to run the tests, and if they happen too infrequently, that testing cannot be done.

night girder

I did hear Germany finally stopped with the craazy autobahn principle?

#

That you can't just pedal to the metal anymore on the left.

dire igloo

And there were investigations by journalists and one owner of such a service did a public interview under his real name showing his face - and there were no consequences cuz he's just offering a legal service that people are using

visual tree
dire igloo
#

And while people are outraged that such services exist, the guy and the journalists did a good job at communicating "hate the game, not the player" so the guy actually didn't receive that many hateful messages

visual tree
#

Assuming you can identify the driver

night girder
#

Just over the years. That less and less autobahns allow to drive unlimmited speed.

night girder
#

Someone told that to me last week. Not if it's true.

grand berry
#

I looked it up and its like 50% have no speed limit 20% have temporary limit

visual tree
#

Found something interesting regarding traffic violations here. If someone who is not the owner of the vehicle makes a traffic violation and the police can't identitfy the person, the car owner will get the fine but nobody will get negative points

dire igloo
# night girder That you can't just pedal to the metal anymore on the left.

Uhm, nope, still very much in place.
HOWEVER:

  1. This is the default rule and it applies only if there's no other speed limit in place.
  2. Plenty of autobahn segments have a speed limit, I think it's like ⅔
  3. There are recurring demands by politicians and activists for the default rule to be a limit too - however there wasn't any actual legislation enforced
  4. While there is no speed limit, there is a recommended speed of 130 kph which if you go over will mean that anything bad happening will be disproportionately attributed to your speed
#

None of this changed in the last couple years tho

night girder
#

Really?

#

I heard more and more cities or district, or however it works in Germany.

#

Just don't allow the "pedal to the metal" fromt he old ages.

dire igloo
night girder
#

Wasn't it way way way back, there were just no rules on the left?

#

Or not when it comes to speed?

visual tree
#

This also brings us close to what you mentioned before. If you are the owner of the car and the police can't identify it was you, you could say someone else was driving and you would avoid getting negative points

dire igloo
night girder
#

While there is no speed limit, there is a recommended speed of 130 kph which if you go over will mean that anything bad happening will be disproportionately attributed to your speed.

Someone also told me, that you aren't insured if you go above that speed limit?

dire igloo
#

Cities and states have no say in Autobahn speed limits

night girder
#

That did make sense to me for some reason. Give people the freedom to drive fast. Give people all the responsibility if things go wrong.

dire igloo
night girder
#

But it's a crazy concept to think cars can drive so hard if they want hehe

night girder
#

That's crazy... all lanes wtf.

grand berry
#

Some guy broke 414 kmh recently i think

night girder
#

The left makes sense.

#

Don't want to drive fast? Go right. Want to drive fast or take risks? Go left.

dire igloo
night girder
#

But now nothing is safe on a autobahn.

night girder
#

Old colleague at work, who lived in Romania or something and went home every weekend. He had a mustang car and just went through german home ... every weekend.

#

"Only is a few hours drive" he told me.

dire igloo
# night girder Realllly? All lanes? We all learn it's only on the left here haha 😄

Well, if you're going 400 in the right lane, anyone who just got onto the Bahn at 80kph or smth will be a big risk factor - so if you want to go petal to the metal, you better do it in the left most lane.

But legally, on the Autobahn:

  • unless specified otherwise, no speed limit on any lane
  • drive as far to the right as the traffic allows
  • adjust your speed to the circumstances (visibility, surface conditions, etc)
night girder
#

So freaking vague.

#

Well, if it works for the country, not my business.

dire igloo
dire igloo
grand berry
#

Can you drive a car thats not technically street legal on it

night girder
#

In my head, it wasn't so stupid that the law and goverment said;

Ok, you can drive as fast as you want BUT you can't expect the insurance to cover this bullshit if you crash your porsch on autobahn at 300 kmph.

dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
dire igloo
#

If you're a farmer with a tractor capped at 59 kph, you can't take that on the Autobahn

grand berry
#

But i mean something like the porsche 919 evo

#

This thing

night girder
dire igloo
# grand berry Some guy broke 414 kmh recently i think

I remember smth about a guy from Dubai in a Bugatti

He had people at every approach to the Bahn that warned oncoming traffic and he did it at like 5am.
Which is why he wasn't fined or punished in any way - while he did aim to go for max speed (which is punishable as a crime), he also took reasonable precautions to avoid harming anyone else

night girder
#

Law can create context for insurance.

#

Even insurance companies have laws they have to abide too.

dire igloo
#

Yes, but law can't tell insurers what not to insure

night girder
#

And with law, I also mean the law makers, goverments.

#

It's 100% possible for a country to say; above this speed limit, insurance companies have the right to not intervene.

dire igloo
#

The traffic laws make no statement about what is or isn't insured, your insurance contract does

night girder
#

Then it's up to insurance companies to choice what to do.

dire igloo
#

Exactly

night girder
#

They can insure above speed limit or not. But if they don't and people complain, the insurance company has the law behind em.

#

But maybe I was not clear with my phrasing 😄

dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
#

cuz it basically says what it means: introducing an assumption upon which the statement is built

night girder
#

But that's not my point, my point was, I saw a logic in it. That's why I believe him when they told me that 😦

night girder
#

Today somebody got angry at me because they made so many insinuations in their head, while I was not aware of any of it since I wasn't making any insinuations.

dire igloo
night girder
#

Sorry, culture thing 😉

dire igloo
#

You don't get fined for going over the Richtgeschwindigkeit, but you will be if you exceed the Höchstgeschwindigkeit

night girder
#

We have a speed limit nothing else.

dire igloo
#

Which is important to know

night girder
#

Very much a culture difference between your culture and mine 😄

#

and that's 100% fine btw. Not an insult.

#

The whole autobahn logic is pretty special you know that right?

dire igloo
#

cuz it also affects insurance policies.
An insurer can't outright refuse coverage when exceeding the recommended speed - because you did nothing wrong, they can't act like you did.
However, you were acting "recklessly" in the sense that you wilfully ignored a recommendation

#

So they can reduce your coverage to whatever it would've been had you abided to the recommendation

night girder
#

Ah, that makes sense.

dire igloo
night girder
#

So you have a recommendation (that you can accept or not) and sometimes you have a limit (not autobahn I guess)?

#

And if you ignore recommendation, insurance can't just say "You ignored a recommendation so we don't insure". If I understand it a bit?

dire igloo
#

There are default rules and there are localized rules

#

By default, there are no speed limits on the Autobahn.
But if the local circumstances require it, there will be a limit for that stretch of the road

#

Same for streets in the city:
You'll have speed limits during the night for noise reduction or during weekdays near schools and daycare centers

night girder
#

I am tempted to start looking up data now. I am really curious now in accidents ratio etc 😄

dire igloo
#

The default is that big sign right at the country's border that tells you "hey, if you don't see any other rule applied, this is what you have to follow"

grand berry
#

Isnt one of the reasons the autobahn exists is bc its so hard to get a licence in germany?

night girder
#

No.

#

The history of the autobahn I know is different.

dire igloo
night girder
#

It was to create jobs at the moment in history.

grand berry
#

Oh

#

But it is hard to get a licence correct?

night girder
#

The usage of the autobahn, I don't know. I just know who made the autobahn. Or atleast what historians tell me.

dire igloo
night girder
#

Our law states something vague like; "You can't drive at a speed that endangeres others. While its by being too slow too fast".
Then we have laws that specify what is too fast. But no concrete numbers for too slow.

#

So in reality, nobody ever gets fined for driving too slow, because nobody knows what "too slow" actually is. Is it 10 below speed limit? 20? 30?

#

Is it a % maybe?

dire igloo
# grand berry But it is hard to get a licence correct?

Ehh. It's a convoluted process and the hurdles are definitely higher than elsewhere, but it's still somewhat easy.
You have to take a written exam (ish, it's multiple choice with a set of standardized questions) and you have to pass an actual driving test

grand berry
#

Ok

night girder
#

There is a trick Maow.

#

Don't get your License in Germany. Then go drive in Germany 😉

grand berry
#

WAIT
