best i've seen is like 0.78

safe trench
#

so close

#

yet so far away

languid gulch
#

i don't think we're that close. i've always put the "have control over your entire planet" includes the stuff under the surface

#

until we can control volcanoes & earthquakes, we ain't there as far as i'm concerned

safe trench
#
  • we have almost control of our power
#

considering that were about like 5 decades away from fusion being viable

languid gulch
#

i'm guessing we're going to abandon fusion before it becomes viable

charred relic
#

We have the technology and/or understand how to get to most of it

languid gulch
#

i'm waiting for someone rich to figure out that whoever sets up the most renewable energy first wins everything

charred relic
#

Capturing all of the incoming energy from the sun is a tough one...

safe trench
languid gulch
#

would be nice

safe trench
#

but NOOOO we cannot do that

languid gulch
#

especially the most armpit parts of the state

charred relic
#

Some of the geo stuff might take awhile to actually acess but tech always advances

safe trench
#

0 clue on what modivates them

#

im guessing the hard drive with the skibidi toilet movie is down there and they are gonna leak it

languid gulch
#

we can do a lot, and we know how to do more, but it's mostly been declared not viable because of how much energy it'd take to do. once you set up enough renewables to get a surplus, those previously non-viable things suddenly become very viable

charred relic
#

Fusion would be neat but that was supposed to have already happened by now multiple times over in my lifetime, just always "right around the corner".

languid gulch
#

yup

charred relic
#

We were supposed to have had that decades ago now

languid gulch
#

i think there'll still be research and manufacturing fusion facilities, just not power production

safe trench
#

"just one more lane bro, just trust me, this time its different we just need 1 more lane bro."

#

more ships and more mews

charred relic
#

And regardless of anything else... we have plenty of fissile material for fuel to last a very long time ๐Ÿ˜„

#

We can buy a lot of time... for other tech... a LOT

safe trench
#

"buh whaur abuto chrunyobolllll!!"

It's the best source as of right now.

#

i'm excited about all the thorium reactors coming online this year

charred relic
#

I loved not far from a site... the Savannah River Site... dad worked there

#

nobody even thought about it... i dunno lol

#

didn't bother us

Wanna know what can go sideways with coal... check into Centralia ๐Ÿ˜„

That shit been on fire since the early 60's lol

And obviously... nobody has any way of putting that shit out lol

The Ford Nucleon is a concept car developed by Ford in 1957, designed as a future nuclear-powered carโ€”one of a handful of such designs during the 1950s and 1960s. The concept was only demonstrated as a scale model. The design did not include an internal combustion engine; rather, the vehicle was to be powered by a small nuclear reactor at its ...

charred relic
#

So it'll just burn until... no more fuel

safe trench
#

we need this.

charred relic
#

I've seen ideas of small reactors for the home

languid gulch
#

i'd love to see a 12 ton coupe ๐Ÿคฃ

charred relic
#

basically it has a "cell" in it.... lasts 20-30 years, then a tech comes out and swaps it

#

might even be able to do it yourself at that point... bam another 20-30 lol

languid gulch
charred relic

Those dudes that got in that sub thought Minecraft 2.0 was down there

why cant we just hook a cat up to a motor
put toast with butter on the cat
then drop the cat

cats always land on their feet
toast with butter always lands butter side down

Who doesn't like to have a little fun in the workshop making some plutonium

charred relic

Somebody asked me awhile back why we don't just make water for places that don't have enough...

safe trench
#

worth a shot

charred relic
#

I'm like yeah... doesn't take much energy to get those things to split... takes a whole hell of a lot to get it to go back together

safe trench
#

/give @e minecraft:_water_bucket 200000

charred relic

then they showed me a video of a rocket test where they were talking about it's water vapor

safe trench
#

why cant we just do that

charred relic
#

im like bro do you know how much that fuel costs?

safe trench
#

this is pratical!

charred relic
#

lol

safe trench
#

nothing can go wrong!

charred relic
#

like even if you could capture it... it's not THAT much

safe trench

i think its worth it

not enough to do much with

charred relic

Yeah lets do it

desalination plant would be nice tho

lets make a gofundme on reddit

that takes a lot of energy too

languid gulch

but not nearly as much as creating water from hydrogen and oxygen

safe trench
languid gulch

the filtration system on them is currently dogshit

why cant we just use commands

god that'd be nice

I was playing a bit more with warp terminal

i can totally write basic code with that stupid AI

why yes... yes please do

languid gulch

fucking hell i saw that on the news this week

i'm kinda tempted to say that anyone who lights themself on fire doing that don't deserve insurance

because we all know degenerates are puncturing chromebooks

languid gulch
#

the trends in my day was shit like pokemon cards & pogs, not trying to burn the goddamn schools down

safe trench

its all because of a sigma quotes guy

charred relic
#

apparently now there are grown men going nuts with the pokemon cards

#

hoarding them and shit lol

languid gulch
#

just reinforces my opinion that the most that kids should get is a basic phone that only communicates with parents & emergency services

safe trench
charred relic
#

yeah it's so silly

#

we had a phone when i was a kid... was wired to the wall lol

later we got one of those fancy pants new cordles phones!

and let me tell you the earlier ones were TERRIBLE

Now... hopefully the timing is just right so that "skynet" comes alive right about the time I'm about to kick the bucket anyhows

i think the main issue is that sarcasm is really hard to do when writing

i used to do cruel and unusual things to the players on my server who were naughty

crazy cattle 3d deserves GOTY

charred relic
#

like confine them to a platform... that was like one of those dunk tanks with the clown at the carinval

#

you'd shoot arrows at a target... if you hit they'd dunk... in lava

#

i'd just invite the server to spawn to come give it a try lol

safe trench
safe trench
charred relic
#

there was also a statue that got labeled "Thee Penis"... mods would make people bow to it for forgiveness lol

#

Also had invisible warps surrounding the main spawn building that would just warp you back to spawn... announce a huge drop party at spawn

charred relic
#

and we'd all be outside of it dropping all kinds of loot none of them could get to lolol

safe trench
#

YES
IM MAKING A PENIS STATUE IN KRYLIA

charred relic
#

they'd run for it then poof back to where they started

#

like a pack of wild animals those guys lol

safe trench
charred relic
#

i made one player who had been xraying bow before Thee Penis

charred relic
#

and surprisingly.... he never cheated again that anyboddy saw, and he was watched

#

I miss having an active server... but I don't miss the work

#

At least at that scale... it;s not so bad small but it starts to get to be a grind

safe trench
#

its a 1.7.10 minecraft mod

#

fun tbh

charred relic
#

1.7.10 and 1.12.2 are the best two version for mods imo

safe trench
#

i use a texture pack to make modern textures

charred relic
#

both have all the good stuff available although some stuff changes a bit between them with the mods

#

So this is a mod... I was actually tinking with putting a pack together that just has the shit i care about

#

which is all tech, get rid of all the fluff that just wasting memory and ticks

#

I have a (slightly modified) 1.12.2 pack server running right now

safe trench
#

hot take but i think create is bullshit

#

its too "magical"

charred relic
#

the pack i have has pretty much all i care about but it also has a lot of the magic stuff and nature shit that i couldn't care less about personally

#

Some combinations just end up being so over the top... like Minefactory farming stuff with Magical Crops

#

it gets silly really really fast

#

then again so do laser drills i guess SHRUG

#

But at least there you have to be generating a lot of power to gain resources very fast that way

#

I should probably just start up a Sevtech Ages game... since it changes basically everything and has progression

And it is the monthly "Reboot Windows" day...

soft bloom
#

I remember some older british pal explaining on yt how to make one of these

#

Omg, discord lost my reply

#

Talking about rattle-snake wind turbine

twin dew
#

Which is also the point that if stuff like this is happening, there is very slow data corruption happening from either HW or software.

night girder
#

@twin dew I just replaced a laptop battery and I noticed the old battery has 4 rubbers pads at the direction of the bodem panel.

#

I assume this is to create a gap between battery and panel for ventilation. Should I try to remove the pads from old battery and put them on the new one at same location?

#

Or doesn't it really matter.

twin dew
#

Using the battery as support for the thin bottom.

night girder
#

My issue is; I am afraid if I take them of the old battery, the glue of pads will not be as strong to stay on new one.

#

and I have no clue what glue they used to attach the pads.

twin dew
#

Second would depend a lot on the fans and the airflow pattern, somewhat unlikely that it would be cooling related.

night girder
#

๐Ÿ‘

#

well it wont hurt to transfer them.

twin dew
#

And glue type doesn't really matter, just something that sticks to both materials.

night girder
twin dew
# night girder

And remember that you can just glue them to the bottom instead of the battery.

night girder
#

eh I will look into it, battery is easier I think for exact same spot

#

There is/was Steam data leak that in the end is mostly non-issue.
Metadata for 89M Steam sent SMS has leaked and is being sold by some hacker.
Of course includes user phone numbers, but that is probably the only explosed data.
No information if even the usernames linked to those phone numbers are included or not.

twin dew
#

Yeah, waited for more information before mentioning.

safe trench
#

i use steam gaurd so i dont have to worry hehe

charred relic
#

Welp... lets see if Amazon ever shows up today

safe trench
charred relic
#

If not they can lick muh sack

pure karma
charred relic
#

I'll even shave... get them all smooth

#

like eggs...

pure karma
#

takes milliseconds for anyone competent to bypass it

safe trench
charred relic
#

If I could do that my friends might not see me for weeks...

charred relic
#

o.O

twin dew
safe trench
twin dew
#

Wasn't know what was leaked before.

#

But the hacker published small sample and that revealed it was just SMS metadata.

charred relic
#

My info is probably out there...But right now if somebody tries to steal my credit all they'll get is practice

#

My credit is frozen... as I have no immediate need for any new lines of credit.

pure karma
#

if your info isent out there by now you dont exist prettymuch

twin dew
#

So almost non-issue.
Just database of phone numbers and the mobile operators Steam users who got text messages from Steam during some specific period, almost certainly without usernames.
And no password related stuff at all.

pure karma
#

i get emails in chinesse for an acount i nerver even made for an app iv nerver heard of lmao

charred relic
#

For those with a decent credit score that don't know about freezing your credit you should go do it unless you need to open a new line od credit soon

twin dew
#

If there were usernames, that would almost certainly have been mentioned in the later stuff.
And this seems then to be just outgoing SMS sending service leak, which then doesn't have any access to usernames either.

#

Basically service provider that Steam uses, that converts internet traffic to SMS was hacked.

#

And the logs for past messages was copied.

safe trench
twin dew
#

So best that the data should be able to realistically be used is untargeted phishing attacks by SMS.

#

Untargeted by person, targeted as being "from Steam"

charred relic
#

I've been getting a lot of scam SMS's lately

#

And a few calls

#

I told the lasty one to pray I don't find where their office is...

twin dew
#

And if you haven't gotten legit SMS from Steam in past X months, your number isn't included, even if Steam has it.

charred relic
#

I was in a bad mood and told him straight up I'll come in there and break his hands so he can never dial me again

#

heh last customer service experience I had the guy told me his name was "bob", I was like "now now lets not start this conversation with a lie what's your real name" (sounded indian)

#

so he says something and I couldn't understand what he said so im like "and Bob it is!"

#

Well Baldur they say the truly security minded... would just never plug into a network lol

#

But then you get into that area of where is the line... physical documents could get compromised to so do you just not keep hard copies of anything either?

safe trench
charred relic
#

I have some important hardcopies in a safe... but even that isn't 100%

#

Well that pouch some cats have on their belly... fun fact that's where the harddrive goes

charred relic
#

I have no cats... I just borrow my neighbors two black cats

#

They know where the good scritches are...

#

I gotta get off my butt soon and head out to the yard and get some work done

#

The new mailbox post isn't going to plant itself int he ground, unfortunately

safe trench
#

what in the ai bot slop is that

#

he just joined 3 days ago

twin dew
#

Someone joining the server, then waiting one month, and then posting weird spam.

twin dew
#

At least only spammed the off-topics.

charred relic
#

Seems like a lot of effort but people will do that, join and just idle around for awhile if needed

#

that used to happen on IRC....

safe trench
#

of course.

#

no

#

the fact how you dropship

charred relic
#

why would you drop somebodies shipment...

twin dew
#

Yeah, never written anything in this server before these three self-spams...

pure karma
#

not much of a surprise there with the automated spam aswell

safe trench
#

like dropping peoples shipment is so 2024

charred relic
#

This is where in person being able tp put on a thick accent is a plus

#

A lot of people associate the accent with low IQ or stupid people or something.

pure karma
#

i respect the stroke mid profile description writing tho

charred relic
#

Works great for lulling people into thinking you are just really dull

visual tree
#

Would you consider it safe to receive steam guard code on mail instead of using steam guard app to type in code?

#

I hate how steam doesn't support google authenticator and forces you to use their steam guard app instead....

#

Sorry, looks like steam guard uses qr code instead to login (I think)

twin dew
#

At first Steam used just tiny bit tweaked standard protocol to get alpha-numeric instead of just numeric.

#

Using QR-code to transfer the information between PC and phone is pretty standard thing on initial setup.

visual tree
#

I hope they will add support for google authenticator because I hate having a lot of apps on my phone

charred relic
#

yes what they said... just use something everybody uses for everything else anyhow...

twin dew
#

Nah, from start being intentional decision to not use the standard that would work with other apps.

charred relic
#

well maybe not everybody but I'd imagine a lot of people use google auth

twin dew
#

There are TOTP apps that at least used to support Steam:s tweaked implementation.

#

Not sure if possible anymore, as the current implementation just shows prompt to accept or deny, not code to type.

#

Not sure if there is offline mode or like still with code.

safe trench
#

@charred relic should i cop the rizzer skibidi?

charred relic
#

The answer is yes, of course.

mental oriole
charred relic
#

If anything says skibidi just go ahead and get your wallet out

mental oriole
#

I doubt

charred relic
#

Actually buy two. Keep one sealed in the box then in 40 years it'll be worth a fortune on the collectors market.

#

Hear me now and listen later. Some of you will think back to this moment and be like damn it I should have listened.

twin dew
#

When it comes to anything from Razer, the answer to "Should I buy?" is always No.

charred relic
#

I dunno about all that, not enough experience with their products.

#

My current opinion based on what I used is "it's fine but overpriced for what it is".

#

I'm still loving this reddragon, I've used this same shape/design before but wired so I'm very used to it.

#

Battery life is lackluster but whatever they can't really jam too much of a battery in there without making it too heavy I guess.

safe trench
twin dew
#

Razer already for long time: hype, marketing and user data harvesting over function and longevity.

safe trench
#

its skibidi!1!1!1!!1!1

#

its very ohio gyatt rizzler!!!1!1

twin dew
visual tree
#

I actually like my Razer Kraken headset. Don't remember when I bought it but it's still working fine and it's very robust compared to other crap headsets which fell apart after 1 year

#

Sorry, it's razer blackshark, not kraken

#

Don't even know my headset model name ๐Ÿ˜…

charred relic
#

people kept suggesting turtle beach headsets years ago... i got a set

#

was left wondering if those folks even had ears :/

visual tree
#

Edit: Apparently, new razer blackshark headsets are crap. I have an older version

charred relic
#

those old spindly looking original walkman headphones sounded better... tbh

charred relic
#

They had this... hollow sound

#

almost like a weird really tight slapback echo

#

bass and treble balance were definitely all out of whack

charred relic
#

I guess the best way to describe it is that "nasaly" high mid heavy sound

visual tree
charred relic
#

Apparently cassettes are making something of a comeback with collectors now.

#

Amazon has these silly little playes that can also rip a tape to mp3... like why

twin dew
#

No idea why, in lot of ways they are even worse than LPs for sound quality.

charred relic
#

Going from vinyl to digital I get assuming it's done well because the vinyl has a wider range

#

I guess if you just really love that tape sound.. I dunno

twin dew
#

You cannot do the same with LP, as the head would just start skipping.

charred relic
#

not compared to what people buy

#

im talking about what peop[le consume

#

a flac vinyl rip > any mp3

#

or any compressed format...

twin dew
#

And that is music exec and mixer decision to compress everything to max volume.

#

Compress the dynamic range, not compression as size saving.

charred relic
#

But now there's question as to whther some of the remasters are even really remasters since a lot of stuff was lost in that fire and they covered up a lot of the losses

twin dew
#

The LP mixes are much more dynamic, as the same cannot be done on LP and for the LP still actually be playable.

charred relic
#

But sure digital has a wider range

#

it's also impossible to actually clip 32bit float

#

there is just too much headroom lol

twin dew
#

If the same mix that is put on LP was also released as digital or CD, that would be significantly better than the LP.

#

But they aren't.

twin dew
#

Even the "quiet" parts are pumped up to high volumes.

#

The loudness war (or loudness race) is a trend of increasing audio levels in recorded music, which reduces audio fidelity andโ€”according to many criticsโ€”listener enjoyment. Increasing loudness was first reported as early as the 1940s, with respect to mastering practices for 7-inch singles. The maximum peak level of analog recordings such as t...

#

With the advent of the compact disc (CD), music is encoded to a digital format with a clearly defined maximum peak amplitude. Once the maximum amplitude of a CD is reached, loudness can be increased still further through signal processing techniques such as dynamic range compression and equalization. Engineers can apply an increasingly high ratio of compression to a recording until it peaks more frequently at the maximum amplitude, a technique colloquially known as brickwalling.

charred relic
#

post 2008 if universal owned it... might not even really be a remaster ๐Ÿ™‚

#

well a remaster... from a CD lol

#

And this is why you shouldn't store that much archival shit in one location....

#

The government does that type of shit too... there is a building in atlanta with no windows that freaks people out... concrete walls no windows pretty tall building

twin dew
#

The Loudness War is all about making music louder, but at the cost of dynamic range and overall audio fidelity.
Because when music is played at fixed equipment volume, most people find the louder track "better".

charred relic
#

it's all concrete for a reason, fires... archive building

twin dew
#

But that isn't the case if the playback volume is adjusted per mix.

#

Where the listener is allowed to adjust the two playbacks to be at "nice volume" themselves.

charred relic
#

increasing the volume had other benefits for them too

#

like radio

#

But they have to play to the majority of consumers ears, which unfortunately is garbage

charred relic
#

I'll just say it lol

twin dew
charred relic
#

no this is a government archive building

twin dew
#

On the sending end.

charred relic
#

compressors have a ratio, the loudness will increase just not at a 1:1 ratio

#

at a 1:3 ratio oir 1:4 or whatever they used

twin dew
#

So the crapped up version sounds "better" in that situation.

visual tree
charred relic
#

they passed a law for TV commercials here regarding volume... I believe... or were considering it

#

Yeah they have buildings like that too that freak people out lol

#

For hip hop music they'd use what would be kind of your average "bom box" in the 80's to listen to tracks

#

because they knew their target demo would be listening on them

twin dew
#

Fortunately that "new" thing for streaming services etc. to normalize to certain LUFS is finally bringing that stuff somewhat down.

#

Because after that normalization, mix that was too compressed originally will just be quieter and shitty.

#

From that site:

#

Still too high IMHO, but better than it was in last 20 years.

#

That movie level -23 LUFS is almost certainly too much for home listening etc. even for most audiophiles.
But somewhere -16 - -20 would probably be better than -14.

33 Thomas Street (also known as the AT&T Long Lines Building) is a 550-foot-tall (170 m) windowless skyscraper in the Tribeca neighborhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City, New York, United States. It stands on the east side of Church Street, between Thomas Street and Worth Street. Designed in the Brutalist architectural style, it is a teleph...

Yeah, I suspect NSA has some equipment on those top floors without windows

#

And I wonder what that shed is hiding

night girder
#

Somebody should tell them about basements.

  • More secure than top floor.
  • No privacy issues.
  • Easier to secure than top floor (less point of entry).
#

They clearly don't care about NSA buildings in EU hehe

visual tree
#

I guess people have that false sense of security when something is elevated on top floors

night girder
#

I think they bought the building cheap once. It didn't have a good basement, so they just blinded the top floors.

#

This one is reported as a NSA building in New York.

visual tree
#

Yeah. I thought it was a data center at first because of vents

night girder
#

Officialy it's owned by AT&T Corp.

#

But in the snowden files, it is reported as a NSA hub to tap telecommunicaitons.

#

33 Thomas may be a mass surveillance hub operated by the National Security Agency, codenamed TITANPOINTE.[6] An investigation by The Intercept and the documentary short film Project X by Henrik Moltke and Laura Poitras both identified TITANPOINTE by drawing on the surveillance disclosures of Edward Snowden. The investigation ties the facility to a nearby Federal Bureau of Investigation building, and its rooftop equipment to NSA's SKIDROWE satellite intelligence system.

#

Only inconsistency I spotted is that when I turned off laptop yesterday, it kept rebooting.

#

I found that, so I leave it at that and I assume it's a MSI problem or something.

#

They wanted laptop factory reset, cleaned, repasted and new PSU. So I am not getting to tweak anything.

#

I wonder what goes wrong between fast reboot and shutting down a system.

#

And it wasn't because of an update, laptop had no internet whole time.

#

And even if it's an update, a system should shut down and then to do the update process on next boot up. And not just restart after a shut down. Did it twice.

twin dew
#

That Windows Fast Startup on shutdown:
Shuts Windows down.
Does soft-reboot.
Boots partway again.
Halts, hibernates and sets BIOS/UEFI into special mode.
Actually shuts down.

And on next start in theory loads just that hibernated thing.
But in specific cases things botch and various failures result.

#

Usually stuck boot, where you then have to force-shutdown and start again, and this time Windows boots normally, and not using the previous partial boot.

#

And is completely unnecessary with any SSD.
Just made boots faster with HDD, but made shutdown much slower.

night girder
#

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

If it's enable out of the box I leave it at that.

Unfortunately yes, it is enabled by default still.

night girder
#

Shit, I forgot to do a bios update. Fuck it, I am not getting paid.

night girder
twin dew
#

No idea.

night girder
#

Because I read mixed things on steam.

twin dew
#

Like I said previously, the minimums are high, and the performance delta between Low and Max is low.

night girder
twin dew
#

So the absolute max isn't that much more HW hungry compared to absolute minimum settings.
And they set those minimums way too high.

night girder
#

And I said, that I doubt the game is optimized hehe You said; but the company behind it delivers optimized games out of the gate.

#

now I am reading post after post about performance not being great. Which could just be ray trace blind hate.

twin dew
night girder
#

Because non of the reviews deliver any proof.

twin dew
#

You have option between High and Ultra basically.

night girder
twin dew
#

The various reviews where they tested various presets on various GPUs.

night girder
#

I though there would be new benchmarks.

twin dew
#

Why would there be if the pre-launch benchmarks are representative?

night girder
#

At this point, I fully regret buying the Premium edition. The game locks up constantly. (RTX 4070 with the latest drivers.) Early access was also botched, where the game wasn't playable when they said it would be.

#

RTX 4070 and game locking up, yikes.

twin dew
#

Somehow expect that to be from the current fucked up Nvidia drivers more than the game too.

night girder
twin dew
#

But cannot know.

twin dew
#

But like the reviews showed, even at Low 1080p, the GPU requirements were high.

#

But then going from Low to max only causes 25% or so FPS drop.

#

Which is why I'm saying the game only has High and Ultra graphics, with several useless midsteps between them.

#

Based on some reviewers trying to find actual visual differences between the higher presets.

night girder
#

So many people keep shitting about the ray tracing in Doom tired_jace

#

blaming it all on that.

twin dew
#

Basically I know my 6600 doesn't run that game playably without upscaling at 1080p.
Not because of code optimizations missing.
But just because the visual quality you get with minimum settings is way too high.

night girder
twin dew
#

Yup.

night girder
#

Ok, after spending some times reading steam reviews. And killing a few of my remaining brain cells.

#

People are just pissed about the forced ray tracing ๐Ÿคฃ

#

It's the thing I keep reading over and over again. "Negative: fun game, but fuck ray tracing".

twin dew
#

But basically most people today don't have GPUs that can run that game.
Not because optimizations or forced raytracing.
But because the graphics options don't allow you to lower the graphics quality from way too high.

#

And then idiots mix that, with raytracing requirement.

night girder
#

Still sounds like a developer problem.

twin dew
#

Yes, but different from "code not optimized".

night girder
#

Clarifying; developers can make a low preset for graphics that isn't so demanding and close to high/ultra.

night girder
#

Optimization can also be; all presets (low/medium/high) are optimized for the hardware and do what they suppose to do.

#

if I turn on low graphics and gain 25% FPS over ultra. Is that opmized, I don't know.

#

But you speak of code optimization, which is different thing to me.

twin dew
#

Code optimization issues cause things to use more processing power for same thing.
So well optimized game uses less CPU and GPU for same visual quality etc.

Not in any way relevant with what visual quality options the devs gave the user.
Someone in the chain didn't allow for settings that would make the game "uglier" for some reason, even when that pushed the minimum HW requirements from GPU side way too high.

night girder
#

Different question, but does this look like a good paste job?

#

seems a bit thin on the GPU.

#

CPU seems fine.

twin dew
#

Depends on what is on the heatsink side too.
But seems that specific contact is very uneven on the GPU.
Did you tighten down in steps and cross-wise?
And not just one screw at a time fully?

#

But basically most of the paste got pushed out on the GPU in places, and rest only stuck to the heatsink on removal.

night girder
#

That's not my job! That's how I opened it up. So I didn't do that ๐Ÿ™ˆ

twin dew
#

Ah.

#

But that unevenness is what causes lot of good CPU pastes to fail so horribly in laptops and GPUs.

night girder
#

I mean fail is a big word. It could be better ๐Ÿ˜›

twin dew
night girder
#

What worst that happens when it's pasted like this, a few celcius extra in some spots?

twin dew
#

When I talk about some pastes in laptops and GPUs.

night girder
#

Shit. Well. We'll see.

twin dew
#

I would that be pretty horribly fail that they end up worse than before repaste in less than a month.

night girder
#

Laptop never had issues with a paste job like that. Don't think me repasting did it any worse.

twin dew
#

But that GPU contant on the heatsink side in the pic is OKish, one corner main contact, but might just be what that cooling does always for example.

night girder
#

but I never owned a gaming laptop so, no clue ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

dire igloo
#

And yeah, paste dries out from high temp, becomes even less conductive, making the hardware even hotter

twin dew
#

And often it is much more than that with unsuitable paste.
Basically everything gets pumped out very quickly and you have basically no paste left in the actual contact area.

#

Even when the same paste works fine for years in desktop CPU use.

night girder
#

they gave me paste and said to put that one it

#

the laptop is mostly used for netflix I believe ๐Ÿ˜›

twin dew
#

Then if that happens, it is on them.

dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
#

Maybe to the point of overheat shutdowns

night girder
#

I still don't get gaming laptops. They walk such a fine line ๐Ÿ˜›

#

I understand the concept of the gaming laptop and it's benefits. But pure hardware wise and performance, cramming it all in such a small space.

#

Also; someone told me they don't like the single heatpipe for the GPU in the pictures I posted.

twin dew
#

It's 30W GPU

night girder
#

50W TDP

twin dew
#

That is the TDP for 1650 Mobile in TechPowerUp, and 1650 Max-Q has 30W.
But that is up to laptop manufacturer to some extent, but usually the number in TechPowerUp is the max that can be used.

night girder
#

That's the Max-Q ? On Tech?

twin dew
#

That is 1650 TI.

night girder
#

Yes?

twin dew
#

And the laptop had 1650 non-TI

night girder
#

no?

twin dew
#

Yes, based on the code on the GPU it is non-TI.

night girder
#

Well it shouldn't based on model?

#

one second.

twin dew
#

1650 TI would be N18P-G62.

night girder
#

One second. You probably right.

twin dew
#

And that was G61 which is non-TI.

night girder
#

Ok, yeah I looked at the wrong spec sheet. Laptop is 10SCXR.

#

I posted for 10SCSR. One letter tired_jace

#

Anyway, a single heatpipe, MSI knows what they are doing.

#

And if not, it's their responsibility ๐Ÿ˜„

twin dew
#

Basically that thing isn't really gaming laptop.
It is cheap laptop with bare minimum dGPU and cooling.

#

Being sold as gaming laptop.

night girder
#

Baldur, where did you get the 30 from?

twin dew
#

That N18P-G61-MP2 die corresponds to both 1650 laptop variants, where default is 50W TDP, and Max-Q extra lowers it to 30W.

#

Don't remember if that "Mobile" was still official part of the name with 1650 laptop parts or not.

night girder
#

Oh there is two 1650?

twin dew
#

Yes.

night girder
#

One is DDR5 and the other DDR6.

twin dew
#

Ah, didn't even notice, as that other one doesn't have die-name listed at all.

#

So likely the two 1650 entries without die names are not actual products.

#

Or just no-one has bothered to check the die markings in any laptop with those variants.

#

But ok, even I was wrong, there is also 40W variant listed in the other entry, didn't look low enough.

#

But laptop GPU power limits with Nvidia at least are complete mess.
As Nvidia just sets the max allowed, and then laptop makers can configure lower one if they want.
With last few generations, the difference between minimum in use and maximum in use has gotten gigantic.
Like 50W to 120W level.

#

Branded exactly the same between two laptops, and then that level of power limit difference when you fully check the specs.

#

Another thing with recent gaming laptops you have to check is how much power can the power adapter deliver...
You have CPU with TDP of X, GPU with TDP of Y, and then power adapter that can only deliver 75% of X+Y for example.
And even not taking into account CPU turbo over that TDP.

night girder
#

I am thinking if their is an easy way to test this out.

#

got HWINFO on a stick, reads 10W idle GPU.

twin dew
#

GPU-Z can just display the limit IIRC, same for HWiNFO.

night girder

if I play a video from the stick, GPU should kick in right?

Let me recheck, brb.

twin dew
#

Ok, HWiNFO doesn't show.

#

And neither did GPU-Z, so I remembered even that wrong.

night girder
#

Ok, I though I was going blind. Been looking everywhere.

#

Spotted it's GDDR6 GPU (in HWINFO). So I think you are correct with 30W.

twin dew
#

Might be 30W, 40W or possibly even that 50W after later checking.

night girder
#

Now I am confused. 50W was listed for GDDR5. Where do you get 40W/50W from?

twin dew
#

Card Notes
GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q 30W = 930-1125 MHz
GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q 40W = 990-1155 MHz

night girder
#

Wow, didn't see that, thanks!

twin dew
#

Neither did I when I first checked that page, only noticed on later check.

dire igloo
#

Budget and country?

#

These tierlists have some good ones missing, but generally a good place to start from

#

Bruh, fckn German internet

twin dew
#

Wonder who made that list...
And based on what?
Because X2HR had much flatter and neutral response curve than HD600.

#

If that is the old Philips Fidelio X2HR that hasn't been in production for years.

#

And DT880 for example has several different versions with different impedances.
Where higher impedance makes them not work without actual headphone amp with high enough output voltages.

twin dew
#

But basically with headphones, there are four main types on response.
Flat.
Bass boosted.
Treble boosted.
Bass+Treble boosted.

And what sounds good to who depends on personal preference.
IIRC most cheaper end Sennheiser stuff is in that last category? But might be bad memory again.

#

Where that "cheaper end Sennheiser" includes that HD600 as the last or so.

dire igloo
twin dew
#

Ok, I probably remember wrong about that HD600, rechecking.

dire igloo
dire igloo
twin dew
#

Ok, those are flat down to 100 Hz and then start to "linear" drop.

dire igloo
twin dew
#

Ah, it was the raw frequency response where HD600 starts to boost from 1kHz up to 3kHz.

dire igloo
#

But yeah, dt880 iterations are wildly different headphones to run

twin dew
#

Ah, I forgot Philips had brought "X2HR" back after X3 for some time, but those were different IIRC from the original X2HRs.

dire igloo
#

If you wanna discuss it further, ask Psy about it

#

I'm outta my depth with that

tribal kraken
#

I'm not really hifi princess but have to say that while back having 2 different PCs, with different Realtek audio codecs, I could definitely tell the difference on them when used with the same MMX300 2nd gen headset

twin dew
#

One probably didn't have any headphone amplifier at all.

#

And other had basic one.

tribal kraken
#

Think it was ALC s1200a on the Asus TUF B650 plus

twin dew
#

Yeah, but that headphone amp stuff isn't directly related to the chip used.

#

But on how exactly the chip is wired on the board.

Can confirm: HD6XX are great.
The entire tier list is weird though. There are a lot of factors to consider with a headphone. Like HD6XX are wonderfully flat, but if you're looking for privacy with your headphones these open backs aren't going to be the ticket.

#

Also anything in that area is going to require an audio interface or headphone amp.

#

Not entirely fair to be comparing them to USB gamer headsets.

dire igloo
#

Because frankly, once you try to, you get too much shit to account for and it becomes meaningless

dire igloo
#

And for DT880, you can get away with a CX31993+MAX97220 combo for like $8 from AliExpress

abstract juniper
#

I think it's reasonable to separate "closed back" vs "open back" vs "usb" Those are reasonably distinct categories.

dire igloo
#

Good DAC and strong enough amp

dire igloo
abstract juniper
dire igloo
#

Closed back use cases quickly involve ANC

abstract juniper
dire igloo
#

and USB is simply substituted with a $10 adapter

dire igloo
abstract juniper
#

Then it's not a very useful tier list.

dire igloo
#

If you need strong ANC, buy Sony WH1000XM4, best ANC on the market, quite poor sound

dire igloo
#

It's a sound quality tierlist, not a use case tierlist

dire igloo
dire igloo

Also lacking some headphones like Fiio FT1 - and it doesn't give any insight into the overlap with the headset tierlist
