My upcoming birthday present to myself

languid gulch
#

what did you end up picking?

charred relic
#

Keychron K4 HE. And a Redragon M913 mouse

languid gulch
#

nice 🙂 i use that mouse too

#

"5060Ti Temu Edition" 🤣

clear garden
#

Wait what? What the hell did gpt reveal to me

#

How can you scrape prices through amazon?

#

And why

twin dew
#

Script loading Amazon product pages, and extracting the price, and then putting that into some DB or like.
Why? Lot of reasons someone might want to have Amazon prices for use.

clear garden
twin dew
#

Point was automatic scraping by a script for large part of Amazon listed products.

#

For YOU to get data on large amount of product prices someone else listed, Amazon in this case.

#

Without manual work for each entry.

dire igloo
twin dew
#

As example.
Or just as tool to price stuff on your own shop for example.

dire igloo
#

That too

#

No use in selling stuff at $40 if Amazon has it for $38.99 with free shipping and a-to-z customer protection

clear garden
tough owl
#

Now there’s an idea

clear garden
#

I meaaann, in todays economics 👀

twin dew
#

And from the comments there is link to 2023 news article that they also pirated the music used.

#

Well, both are "Used without license"

dire igloo
#

Or as herg's bio said:
I wish piracy was theft. I wish I could pirate a Disney movie and it wasn't theirs anymore

charred relic
#

ugh

charred relic
#

mouse came today... yay for next day delivery

pure karma
#

Do you wish to know what i ended up going with?

#

i checked the PSU tier list and went straight down to seasonic because iv heard them a lot recently saw all of them were good prettymuch so it was down to availability first 1000+W one i saw was what i went with…

#

and that was the vertex GX-1200

charred relic
#

At first I was like eh LED's no workie then noticed the switch :/

charred relic
#

Mouse about what I expected from Redragon, good but not great. This is basically the same thing as my M901 but this one is wired or wireless instead of hardwired.

#

They keyboard I'll be waiting until like the 5th for heh

languid gulch
#

yea for the price i like it

#

nothing amazing, but a ton of buttons

#

i do like the dpi up/down right by the scroll wheel

charred relic
#

The buttons end up being super handy in modded MC with all the button conflics

#

And a 10-keyless board... normally i'd populate the 10 key with stuff

languid gulch
#

oh ouchie. yea that sucks to lose

charred relic
#

the new keyboard is only a tad bit wider than this and has it lol

languid gulch
#

the mouse is a bit of a pain to clean the side buttons on, but it makes up for it by having the rest of it be easy to keep clean

charred relic
#

I bet my earbud cleaning tool would work for that...

languid gulch
#

i have a dental scraper & one of those little car detailing brushes

#

hardish/softish plastic tip on one end

charred relic
#

But... what ya pick yer teef with?

languid gulch
#

i have a swiss army knife & finally got it replacement toothpicks & tweezers

charred relic
#

lol

languid gulch
#

i also have one of those big super fine long bristle makeup brushes for cleaning stuff like my keyboard without having to remove the keycaps every time

charred relic
#

i have one of those too.... but for making myself glamorous

#

still liking the mouse... then again like i said it's my 901 but wireless but the wireless works well

languid gulch
#

i do wish it was easier to clean out internally, but i'd like to see that for all mice

charred relic
#

i added a 4th, i have to juggle 5 rubber duckies

dire igloo
soft bloom

oh, that I didn't experience

twin dew
#

Usually with two there aren't issues.
With three in line you have minor ones.
And for any kind of 2D instead of line you have major issues as putting one monitor in place will change another.

and for games even outside of the 50% performance loss average having spikes of as much as like 3 seconds of input delay for no reasson isent great

tribal kraken
#

Should SATA connectors in 90 degree be always like the latter picture? Wires point down, not up? Is it a standard? I think the other ones dont even fit/work with all hard drives/SSDs

#

That is D5 Next waterpump

twin dew
#

Not really.
Implementation specific, bad pump housing design.

#

Basically can only be used for straight connector with those other connectors in that place and that lip in other direction.

tribal kraken
#

Yeah I had straight connector with previous PSU but it did not like water 🌊

#

But luckily this could be dissasembled and turned around

pure karma
#

i got confirmation that my new case arives on the 7th 🥳

#

psu said it would arive by the 1st but no shipping confirmation yet so not too hopefull

tribal kraken
#

And luck also that the PSU shorting from few drops did not break anything else

#

Bit hurry and bad luck cost one LianLi 1kW PSU

#

You can see some of the water on the grill

pure karma
#

was it just exposed or what?

#

cause how else would you get water in a PSU

twin dew
#

At bottom and leak in water cooling system.

#

With fan upwards.

pure karma
#

thats just peak cut corners and bad combined planing

tribal kraken
#

Cleaned the GPU block. Had some spill when removing it and had towel below, on top the PSU. But some drops got thru it and about 15mins of running only water pump (all else disconnected from the PSU ) it shorted and blow fuse of the main electric feed in the house

pure karma
#

mine is overspeced enough now that the house breaker will probably pop before the PSU so il know when enough is enough

tribal kraken
#

This replacement Asus TUF 1kW PSU has fan pointing down and solid top/roof

#

Yeah it was friday when it happened. I left running while went to buy beer

pure karma
#

and the PSU tried to get some beer of its own

soft bloom
pure karma
#

its not i tested it across 10 games it was worse in every game that was not performance limited by its engine

#

in fact it wasent even fair because linux was too incompetent to record so windows was at a disadvantage and still won

#

il give credit were credit is due in snowrunner because of the engine limitations breaking it got like double the performance

#

that was its only win

#

it was like 80fps to 150fps

pure karma
#

you can record with the snipping tool?

twin dew
#

It seems to have video mode.

twin dew
#

As easy tool to make instruction videos?

#

Or easy way to get user to make video about what they are doing when something fails.

#

Where the ease of use is the most important point.

pure karma
#

its probably about as reliable as gamebar so sure ig it can stay

#

idk i dont feel like even bothering to try it

#

its probably just an old thing that was easier to keep than to remove

#

most people i know that dont use obs use game bar

#

whatever it uses its high on compression

#

and its not even that great either

#

the clips are still like 30+MB

#

with quality that justifies like 6-12MB AT MOST

#

yep

#

i only keep game bar around for the clips feature that works 50/50

#

yea thats why i dont even bother

#

it can if you pay over 100$ for it

#

and he uses ARCH OUT OF ALL THE OPTIONS

#

i couldent even make it to the desktop

#

even with the autoinstall

#

which dident do its job

#

i run windows 99% of the time

#

but i have a ubuntu dual boot that i use whenever i want to die inside

#

if it had decent apps in the stupid app store then maybe id use it more but you cant do anythign other than steam with worst perofrmance or browser tasks

#

why do you have the entire names of programs on your taskbar lol

#

im gonna swap back to windows i hate everything about this

#

i like having my taskbar not be a KM long

#

especially before i reset recently and my taskbar was twice as long

#

idk i dont mind it

#

honestly idk how you live without search

#

great one that

charred relic
#

i use that search a lot

#

i could also use some pants but that's en entirely different issue

pure karma
#

i also have my taskbar merged on my desktop aswell so im consistent

#

only diffrence is i have the search shrunk cause its way too large on a actual monitor lol

#

Who uses arch?

mental oriole
twin dew
#

Yeah, but not suitable for complete Linux newb like MagicZ.
But the whole project of MagicZ trying to try Linux was certain to end in failure, so I didn't bump in when that was recommended to him.

#

In here.

#

I was too tired that day to deal with the questions that would have caused directly to me.

mental oriole
#

Yep fair. The only drawback with linux is certain online games that require kernel mode anticheat will never work.

twin dew
#

Especially when MagicZ seems to see need to read any documentation as something to never do, and as personal affront if forced to.

#

In a way Ubuntu would be the perfect distro, as somewhat newbie friendly, and lacking any and all documentation XD

languid gulch
#

would be interesting if Samsung (or some other big corpo) did something like license Ubuntu or Linux & made it into a windows/iOS competitor

soft bloom

Where Mint is Ubuntu with different desktop manager.

#

AFAIK

soft bloom
#

actually I don't think it should be as something else
abandon familiarity - accept new life
Expectation shouldn't be that "it's like windows but better", it should be "it's just better at most stuff"
if you seek faimiliarity - you won't be happy about any difference, even if it's for the better

twin dew
#

Yeah, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with their own Cinnamon (Gnome fork) GUI/desktop manager and support config apps etc. layered on top.

#

For Linux Mint 22

wanton orchid
twin dew
#

Ok, so me misremembering and just getting mentioned that two(?) people on this channel use it.

mental oriole
#

I recommend it while being sarcastic, but the sarcasm part got lost in translation.

#

Nvm im stupid, didnt realise we're talking different distro. Nobody recommended like Baldur said.

twin dew
#

I (mis)remembered that Arch Linux got recommended to MagicZ month(s?) ago.

#

And that ended very badly.

#

Also IIRC tried Ubuntu at some point, and couldn't find how to install software from the distro repos.
And because Ubuntu didn't have any real documentation, couldn't check how that is done on GUI side properly.

pure karma
#

no i willingly installed arch because i could not because i should

#

im still stuck with that ubuntu install because theres no easy way for me to remove it without breaking the windows install i also have

mental oriole
#

Always use separate drives for os, just makes stuff easier in the long run. I learned that the hard way (:

twin dew
#

If on EFI/UEFI boot and separate partitions, no effect.

soft bloom
#

yeah, talking isntallation
windows is so fragile with those additional partitions
liek how can you craft soemthing that is so clingy to disk space?

#

basic features: how about a proper fast search?

twin dew
#

Not with EFI boot.

#

You are remembering the old BIOS boot.

soft bloom
# twin dew Not with EFI boot.

don't remember exct setup, but it was something liek this: windows somehow got it's parititions not in tight sequence, so when deleted partition between them windows decided it doesn't want to load anymore.
it was that long ago. but it could be that one time when I didn't EFI it

twin dew
#

Yes, because old BIOS boot was fragile.
UEFI boot and current Windows boot loader work with partition GUIDs, not partition numbers.

#

And support for multi-boot is baked into that UEFI boot.
Where the EFI partition can contain multiple OS bootloaders and you can use UEFI to select which to boot.

#

And those second stage bootloaders are more intelligent.

#

Like that using partition GUID to boot the OS.

soft bloom
#

and that reminds of the fact that laptop can't install updates because there's not enough space on /boot 😦
that 1 time I thought "okay maybe that guide 512MB is enough" and now I dont have extra space to extend it

twin dew
#

Yes, GRUB, Windows Boot Loader etc.

#

Well, GRUB2 today, original GRUB has long since been depricated.

charred relic
#

Apple proved it can be done. Turn an otherwise non viable end user system into something that works.

#

Not sure how much money that cost them but they did it

#

They also had the advantage of only having to account for limited set of hardware...can't forget that

#

awww it got googly eyes

#

I'm pretty sure it wants to murder me

#

The way it walked up to me... and it's eyes looked right into every direction

pure karma
pure karma

only way i can get rid of it is wipe the drive

well ik i can tell it to nuke itself through the command line but idk how

and deleting the partitions is probably a terrible idea

charred relic

I usually don't use the windows build in partition editor for that reason, it doesn't handle certain situations as i'd expect

hazy smelt

like.. just strap it to the top of my current AMD cooler and turn it on at all the time

hazy smelt
charred relic
#

Which is in line with high end heatsinks

hazy smelt
#

it is about the money if your budget is 50 quid

charred relic
#

Neither is better or worse really if it's a good one but the AIO is easy to mount and takes uip little room outside of the rad

#

which most cases have a place for...

hazy smelt
#

i certainly would not mind a watercooled CPU but they're horribly expensive no

charred relic
#

So yeah most good cooling air or liquid is going to run a bit north of 100USD, that's my take anyhow

twin dew
#

You can get ok air cooling for 30-40, and good for 50-60.
But need to be very selective.

charred relic

since the last DDU & amd driver update, there's this weird quirk that when I start playing video in that tab...
that one video, and only it, will play with crazy visual statters.
audio is not affected. other videos are not affected.
playing it in other tabs, in new windows, after re-opening chrome - same issue.
lasts until full restart of OS.
this works like magic. and obviously video itself is not the issue - plays well on linux, and happened to multiple videos.

Reset CMOS according to MB manual instructions.

hardy forge
#

I read that, Just scared to do it

#

How do you short circuit something that isnt plugged in

twin dew
#

You don't care what actually happens.
Only that you follow the instructions, and then connect the two pins/pads with something conductive, like screwdriver head, for a second.

hardy forge
#

Ive done what it says...now gonna wait for 10mins

#

I did that

#

Said to 5-10 seconds on manual i done 6 just to be sure

#

Im an idiot...Its a bettery ofc its gonna have power...

#

I done what it said and still same issue

twin dew
#

Then either that didn't take, or the HW is broken in major way.
But if the HW was broken, it probably wouldn't get to that stage.

Ok soo we at the lock screen now

#

All i did was let it do its thing,

hardy forge
#

1 ram stick Is under the cpu cooler

twin dew
#

Ok, so just took forever to boot?

hardy forge
#

Yea

#

Everything has booted

#

But now im concerned if its gonna be like this from now on

#

Restarting took me back to that screen soo now i gotta wait for bios again, may need help with this part

#

So im in bios currently where do i from here

twin dew
#

To do what?

hardy forge
#

Boot order

#

Cause it seems its still gonna be slow

twin dew
#

Windows Boot Loader first?
Or main HDD.

hardy forge
#

Windows

twin dew
#

I meant if that Windows Boot Loader entry exists, that first.
If it doesn't, the main HDD first.

hardy forge
#

Says boot option #1 is Windows Boot manager sandisk

But options 2 is the Same sandisk

hardy forge

I cant really see any

pure karma
#

honestly i have no idea but il give my best guess which is its probably failling the initial check but its working enough that by letting it sit it "eventually" just skips it

twin dew
pure karma
#

i could see this being a drive failure too

twin dew
#

Point of that is to see what the MB is saying it is doing when the boot stops.

pure karma
#

cause thats when the drive would take over but if it has no reasson to think the drive isent working its gona try to load and just sit there until the drive does its part

twin dew
#

And does the same stop happen if you use Restart in Windows?

hardy forge
#

I just done a restart and doesnt seem soo

twin dew
#

So that is probably Windows Fast Boot.

pure karma
#

if it gets into bios it might be best to just try to update the bios before it kills itself for good if it is indeed a bios issue

#

cause i could see the bios corupting from overtime data loss after what like 7-8 years of not updating

hardy forge
#

Everything seems to working for now

twin dew
#

Start old Control Panel.
System and Security
Power Options.
Choose what the power buttons do on top left.
Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Untick "Fast Bootup" or similar and save changes.

hardy forge
#

Fast bootup is disabled

#

I did make sure

hardy forge
#

SOOO umm

#

My pc now says American Megatrends

#

And its slow...Im pretty sure my pc is dying at this point

#

I got past it but like what is that

twin dew
hardy forge
#

What is american megatrends

#

Ah ic ic

twin dew
#

Gigabyte licensed their code and customizes it for each motherboard.

#

But take pic and post it here from the boot while that wait is happening.

hardy forge
#

...MY FUCKING SSD DIED

twin dew
#

Like MagicZ expected from the wait.

hardy forge
#

My pc had a D: drive but its died

twin dew
#

So the wait is from computer trying to detect it?

hardy forge
#

Yes

#

Like i can hear it running but it wont show up

#

Wait...replugging might just worked

#

Yey it did

Conclusion

My pc is dying still

twin dew
#

Yeah, some SATA cable connectors go bad with time and heat.

hardy forge
#

It is 21-24 °C rn outside....

#

Ill leave it off for now then

twin dew
#

Case inside temperature, and just accelerates it.

hardy forge
#

Makes sense

twin dew
#

Also whatever heat the drive makes that gets moved to the connector.

hardy forge
#

Makes sense

#

Soo just wait till after the sun goes away

#

Cool

twin dew
#

No?
If that is the case, you get or buy new SATA cable?

#

Making it cooler when it has gone bad doesn't help.

#

Repositioning the connector helps for a time.

pure karma
#

im not even surprised that my blind guess that shouldn’t work was right with the amount of random broken bullshit i deal with

#

and i got a PSU swap to do tonight unless it gets delayed in shipping again

#

apparently they put it on the wrong truck jace_smile

hardy forge
#

Im too broke for new cables rn and im waiting for my friends to pay me money back

Any tips for lightweight VPN's?

  • NordVPN
  • Proton VPN
twin dew
#

MullVad?

night girder
#

Thanks!

twin dew
#

At least I don't think their software has been bloat.
And you can use any other OpenVPN or Wireguard implementation if you want to.

night girder
#

Yeah, seems a lot of stuff is blaoted with stuff I don't need.

#

nordVPN app is 125MB.

mental oriole
#

it's 5.5Mb client on linux (although not sure about dependencies

twin dew
#

Same with that MullVad in install size for Windows.

night girder
#

mulvad 212 MB rofl

twin dew
#

Base WireGuard Windows installer is 3MB.

twin dew
night girder
#

Their browser is 90 MB.

twin dew
#

Didn't even think about installer size.

night girder
#

I call this bloat:

Automatic WireGuard key rotation, anti censorship, port probing and traffic obfuscation
Advanced kill switch. Tight firewall integration with atomic operations without leaks
Multihop and Shadowsocks
Cryptographically signed installer
We have a no-logging of user activity policy
#

Copy pasted from mulvad. (And the last point is valid, the no-logging).

mental oriole
#

Two last are valid, because you want a properly signed installer.

night girder
#

I just want a simple VPN so I can stream stuff from other countries 🤣

charred relic
#

I used to have OpenVPN running out of Canada... but I never needed it so I stopped fooling with installing it as I'd migrate

twin dew
#

Second is about not allowing any traffic before VPN is up on computer start or like, if you set that enabled.
Firsts first is about WireGuards downside, fixed keys etc.
Firsts rest are optional.
Third is optional, but allows again better security against nation-state level actors, as the server where your VPN connection goes, and where your traffic come out are different.

#

Basically Your computer < VPN > Server 1 < VPN > Server 2 < > Internet.

#

So for that second, the point is that if you want to always use VPN, to prevent any network traffic reliably while the VPN connection is down for any reason.

night girder
twin dew
#

And like I said, they allow you to use any OpenVPN or WireGuard client, not just that own set.

night girder
#

Cool stuff, but I just wanted something simple for streaming 😄

twin dew
#

2.7MB for the installer at least.

night girder
#

Well, I wanted the package. Software + servers 😄

#

Not just software, because I don't own servers across the world.

#

Eh, fuck me, 2025 and VPN's are still a fucking mess.

#

Lightweight VPN, plugin and play, with subscription that isn't robbing people, and that is trustworthy. ... too much too ask 😦

twin dew
night girder
#

Mullvad does look like a good candidate. Just not a fan that the app installer is so big.

twin dew
#

And that was the point, that if you don't need the extra security against leaks etc. just use the base OpenVPN or WireGuard clients instead of MullVads own.

night girder
night girder
#

Pay subscription for mulvad.
Use other software to implement it.

twin dew
#

Basically you use MullVads servers, but generic VPN client software on your computer.

night girder
#

Yeah.

#

But here was me: hoping to just pay for a subscription, download lightweight app, install and go.

pure karma
#

actually that reminds me... ubuntu probably dosent have a built in anti virus does it?

#

iv just been raw dogging it the entire time

twin dew
night girder
#

Proton VPN is pricy.

twin dew
#

Where at least the installer exe I downloaded for WireGuard Windows was 2.7MB.

#

Where that config generation and install is one-time-thing.

night girder
#

Proton VPN.

#

But, I don't need a ad-blocker or advanced VPN customizations 😄

twin dew
#

Mullvad is the same 5e per month.

#

Ok, that was with discount.

#

For ProtonVPN.

night girder
#

Yeah! Sorry 😄

#

Though that was clear by the 9.99

twin dew
#

In this case, to get around geoblocking in streaming services it seems?

night girder
#

and the -50%.

night girder
twin dew
night girder
#

The show itself is free. But only for america 😄

#

Fuck GEO blocking.

twin dew
#

And one of the plusses IMHO in MullVad is that the price is always 5e/month, no matter the period.
(Also Swedish company)

night girder
#

And my first reaction was, that Mulvad is as expensive as Proton VPN (both are sweden) but as you said, there is -50% discount on Proton VPN.

#

So it does seem that Mulvad is a more fair VPN.

twin dew
#

And that is for 1 year subscription.

night girder
#

2 years is cheaper.

twin dew
#

I just buy time with MullVad one month at a time when needed.

night girder
#

a month is expensive.

#

Proton.

#

Nord VPN

#

12.99 a month hehe

twin dew
night girder
#

1 decade for 5 euro seems like a good deal hehe

twin dew
#

Says per month

night girder
#

Joke went over the head.

#

I am just not funny.

twin dew
#

But the exact point is that stuff that many of the other VPN providers do where they try to get you to do 1-5 year commitment in once to get cheaper per month prices.

#

Where I only need VPN few months a year.

night girder
#

See how that goes.

#

Which payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Monero, bank wire, credit card, PayPal, Swish, Eps transfer, Bancontact, iDEAL, and Przelewy24.

#

So I can send my 5 euros to Sweden?

twin dew
#

Yeah, they take mailed cash.

night girder
#

Holy fucking shit, what for a company is that 🤣

#

That's legendary.

twin dew
#

Extreme privacy?

night girder
#

Imagine sitting there, getting 5 euro by envolop with a account number, then you have to add that to the account. What a job.

#

Oh, another thing that is leggit with Mulvad, is that they work by account number. No e-mail needed for account.

#

If you lose the account you kinda fucked it seems?

twin dew
#

Well, you lose whatever time you still had paid for.

night girder
#

Can’t remember your account number? It might be possible to recover, although we can’t guarantee it since we keep as little information as possible about our users.
Look in the app

First, look in the Mullvad VPN app. Click on the account icon (

) to find your account number.
Trace your payment

If that’s not an option, then trace your payment method. Select the payment method you used and follow the instructions. Please note that payments are only traceable for 40 days.

#

Since we shred the envelopes shortly after receiving them we will only be able to recover your account using a very recent payment. To help us find the correct payment envelope, send an email to support@mullvadvpn.net with as many of the following details as possible:

What the envelope looks like
The postage date on envelope
The location from which it was sent
The amount that it contained
twin dew
#

But the whole point that MullVad tries to provide is the option for as extreme security and anonymity they can provide and you want.

night girder
#

But I wonder if it's a viable business model in the long run. Not that it's my concern.

#

They already promised to never go above 5 euro. So scaling up price is a no-go.

#

You have extra manual labor (opening envolops) which you need to pay people for ...

twin dew
#

Thousands of Swedish krowns.

night girder
#

mullvad.net/en/blog/multihop-now-available-on-android

To further increase your privacy and make your traffic harder to analyze, you can now route all your traffic through two servers instead of just one

Their most recent blog posts also just admits that VPN traffic is still analyzeable/trackable sorta.

twin dew
#

For someone doing large enough data collection near their server.
Like I said, protection against nation-state level actors.

night girder
#

Because if VPN was 100% thight (my personal opinion is that 100% secure doesn't exist) why route through 2 servers.

twin dew
#

As you can see one traffic stream coming in inside VPN.
And then traffic going out of the server.

night girder
#

At that point TOR network might be better lol.

#

Thank you CIA.

twin dew
#

So in theory if you have all that traffic, you can try to match the VPN hidden traffic amount to the internet facing traffic.

night girder
#

5 euro for a try is the most fair I've seen so far.

twin dew
#

But that isn't on by default.
That seems to just mean they added support for it into their own Android app.

night girder
#

and then all the other benefits. Except the app. But I see how that goes.

twin dew
#

For configuring it.

night girder
#

I will install the mullvad app, maybe it's not that bad.

#

if it' too bloated, I switch it out for something else.

#

Also interesting post. Which applies to me. iOS.

#

oh wait, no I don't care about iOS 😄

#

As per Apple's documentation and several vulnerability reports (e.g. TunnelCrack) , setting includeAllNetworks to true (and possibly excludeLocalNetworks too) will prevent traffic from leaking from the tunnel

#

The reason as to why have we not set this flag in our iOS app is because it does not quite work.

#

As part of our ongoing commitment to storing less user data and protect your privacy, we’re updating our refund policy.

Starting immediately, refunds will now be available for 14 days instead of 30 days for all new payments. This adjustment reduces the amount of time we need to retain payment related data.

#

Ok, Mullvad. Sure.

#

Maybe scrap the refund policy all together for even better security and privacy.

#

A bit convenient. But I don't need the refund policy.

#

So it's all good. Anyway, I am going for a drive 👋

#

Cheers for the advice Baldur!

#

And Maxeek, take care of yourserlf my friend 😄

#

How do you update that code in Switzerland?

#

For example; US disallows access to Microsoft for EU.
EU takes out the backup from the code in Switzerland so we can continue.

#

But that code might be outdated by months, maybe years?

#

"We will store backup copies of our code in a secure repository in Switzerland, and we will provide our European partners with the legal rights needed to access and use this code if needed for this purpose."

oh, what have we here
another video about how UE 5 is killing gaming , such a crazy concept and video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZodKR6TR70

The list of games made in Unreal Engine 5 that are releasing with performance-related problems has grown extensive: Black Myth: Wukong, Silent Hill 2, Stalker 2, Tekken 8, Frostpunk 2, The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered, and ARK: Survival Ascended all harbor in-play stuttering, frame rate drops, input lag, bugs, and various other game break...

▶ Play video
twin dew
#

Breaking PCs?
Meaning triggering unstable systems to crash?

languid gulch
#

forgot to turn off my keyboard before moving it 🤣

twin dew
#

Or just bad headline when the actual description is:

The list of games made in Unreal Engine 5 that are releasing with performance-related problems has grown extensive: Black Myth: Wukong, Silent Hill 2, Stalker 2, Tekken 8, Frostpunk 2, The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered, and ARK: Survival Ascended all harbor in-play stuttering, frame rate drops, input lag, bugs, and various other game breaking problems.

languid gulch
#

idk if i've ever had a serious issue with UE5

#

tho my long-term mmo is so unstable & fucked up that just about anything is better, so that may be skewing my opinion

twin dew
#

Or unstable GPU in same, especially the startup performance testing that really spikes up and down multiple times very fast.

#

But that is PC side HW issue, not engine issue.

languid gulch
#

i'd love to know how many of those systems are either 13th/14th gen & already fucked up, or are running so near the edge of stability that UE5 is just too much for it

twin dew
#

All.

verbal raft
#

💀

twin dew
#

For the crash stuff I mean.

#

Not the performance & stuttering etc.

languid gulch
#

in which case they need to throw out all the results & start the fuck over, alongside a retraction of the article claiming it's definitely UE5's fault

twin dew
#

That input lag is from outside programs too.

#

Where stuff hooking into the input pipeline don't play nice with UE5.

#

Where the other stuff shouldn't be hooking into the input at all.

languid gulch
#

which just about every engine deals with to some extent

#

but yes, could be improved

twin dew
#

This one is almost certainly from broken Nvidia GPU driver install:

New Oblivion remaster is spiking my CPU usage to 100% and causing it run at 88c I value my hardware and this isn't acceptable I've seen posts on people claiming they're entire system is just shutting down due to thermal throttling during even the start-up and after leaving the shaders cache and compile.. Weirdly this only happens in Oblivion most UE5 games are don't cause this issue at least for me.

languid gulch
#

also new oblivion's minimum recommended spec is a 6800XT

#

which ain't no slouch when it comes to a gpu

#

so yea, cranking any settings on it is probably gonna be pushing everyone's hardware

#

and yea, fuck knows about nvidia drivers on top of that

twin dew
#

Lot of cases where Nvidia GPU drivers were pushing all cores to max for some reason with 1.0 and needed to be cleaned and reinstalled to fix.

verbal raft
twin dew
#

Yes, lot of unoptimized UE5 games coming out.
Part because of exec level and/or programmers misinterpreting some of Epics marketing etc.

#

And various issues in general, lot of which are from HW or other programs, not the engine itself.

languid gulch
#

yea i'm not seeing any other games except for clair obscur having as high of system requirements as Oblivion

#

even the indiana jones game

twin dew
#

And in general large studio games not getting optimized at all.

mental oriole
languid gulch
#

using it as a "omg it's torching my system, it's running so hot there must be something wrong with UE5" is horseshit

twin dew
#

As that isn't anyones work, and the leadership level is not willing to pay for it.

verbal raft
twin dew
#

And if optimization isn't someones work, almost impossible to do, as you would be stomping all over the codebase, on other peoples fingers and toes.

languid gulch
#

there's definitely that aspect, but also claiming that's the sole reason for instability is just wrong

twin dew
#

I wasn't talking instability.
I was talking bad performance and excessive hardware requirements.

languid gulch
#

sorry, mine was meant for lightning's comment

#

you were too fast 😛

twin dew
#

UE5 causes very swingy load, causing lot of previously hidden HW level instability problems to become acute.

#

That is engine feature.

#

Not bug really, just from the way stuff is implemented with worker threads etc. for multitasking.

#

And doesn't cause issues if the system is actually stable.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

i do wonder if having a massive database like UE5 is just "too much" for some dev studios, and maybe trimming them down for specific development would be a better idea than just stuffing the entire thing into the game

twin dew
#

No, the problem is way too large teams with not enough coordination, and no-one responsible for wholesale code quality and optimization.

#

Happens no matter the engine.

languid gulch
#

yea true, lack of liability/responsibility is definitely poison

twin dew
#

For the ingame engines, there often was "Engine Team" that handled also that.

#

And jumped on other teams feet to get ok performance.

languid gulch
#

i'm waiting for something like what happened when New World started frying GPUs, but in an instant & much wider scenario

#

like some kind of update or patch that removes all safeties

twin dew
languid gulch
#

yea but i mean on the UE5 side of things

#

where something's just missed, completely sneaks through QA, and makes it live

twin dew
#

We already got that with Intel 13th and 14th gen thing in way?

Can't really run the fans low enough to keep it silent with that radiator area, if want to keep water below 40°C.. 50°C water will show up as increased temps on CPU/GPU

#

But I enjoyed building it more than putting the air cooler back on the GPU, and the watercooling parts would just sit on my shelf unused.

#

But the tube/pipe/cable managment for my own dual PC system will be pain. Screw copper piping to wall, keep the radiator location swap easy etc

#

Hey, sometimes when I boot my computer it doesn't register my 4050.
When I restart it sometimes comes back, how can I fix it?

#

I think I have to use the DDu and then reinstall the drivers

pure karma
#

laptops prioritise the igpu unless theres a lot of load on the system

twin dew
#

Basically if there isn't some 3D load or like running on the dGPU, it is wholly turned off to save power.

twin dew
#

By default automatically, but you can force specific programs or check what they are set to run in Windows Settings:

night girder
#

MS is locking those down though.

#

Microsoft might have blocked a sneaky bypass that let you setup Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account

#

Today they annoiced the push to passwordless accounts.

#

So you either need face recognitation, a pincode I think, or a fingerprint.

twin dew
#

They removed the script.
But doign the same reg command that would have run still works.

night girder
#

MS is doing a fine job.

night girder
#

They cracking it down.

night girder
#

Just the way towards the scripts (the command itself).

#

Nonetheless, I don't know what's up with MS, but I will follow this close. I smell something 💩

twin dew
#

That OOBE\Bypassnro is command that runs bypassnro.cmd that is located in C:\Windows\System32\oobe\

#

Contents of which are:

reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE /v BypassNRO /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
shutdown /r /t 0```
#

That script was removed in insider builds.

#

RUFUS just prebakes that registry entry into the installer.

night girder
#

I want too.

#

Fuck Microsoft. Big times.

twin dew
#

Local accounts are still officially supported in Pro and up.
MS is only trying to force everyone on Home to use MS accounts.

night girder
#

For decades I read hate about Apple. People been sleeping on MS.

#

Probably does somewhere 😛

twin dew
#

On the server stuff, in text only mode.

night girder
#

This will be the default for new accounts now.

hardy forge
#

who else loves it when nvidia doesnt tell you about gpu driver updates

night girder
#

text based web browsing huh? 😛

twin dew
#

Doesn't really work anymore with most sites.
But I have used it in the past.

night girder
#

sounds like a webbrowser for a teenage son 🤣

twin dew
#

But if site works without javascript, then it still should work in Lynx.

night girder
#

non javascript websites, oof.

#

As of 2025, 98.9% of websites (around 51,000,000 websites) on the Internet use JavaScript as a client-side programming language

#

Have fun 👍

twin dew
#

Uses vs. needs.

night girder
#

Also, does the browser describe images?

night girder
twin dew
#

Lot of sites use JS for effects etc.
Only some idiotic sites use it for all content.

night girder
#

You can still disable javascript in browser. I do it sometimes.

#

it just breaks certain websites.

twin dew
#

And that is the same split.

night girder
#

also, let's not forget, mainstream websites (netflix, YT, google, facebook, ...) all depend on JS afaik.

twin dew
#

Google, in all its text glory!

night girder
#

Not just for "pretty effects".

night girder
#

should work if it's just API call

twin dew
#

Search for "Discord"

night girder
#

I am ok with Firefox atm. But will look for replacement.

#

Firefox is losing it's "cool kid on the block" vibe slowly.

#

little policy changes. It's still on of the best browsers out there imo.

twin dew
hardy forge
#

soo ive come to the conclusion, my just getting old
i accept this lol

night girder
#

Like it's cool, but it's like taken out the horse and the wagon again instead of using a car 😛

#

Baldur, test facebook hehe

#

I wonder how that works only text based.

#

I swear to god, this boss is bullshit. Has 10% drop for a trophy. Killed it 20 times ... ffs.

twin dew
night girder
#

Yeah, but that's the login.

twin dew
#

I don't use Facebook, give URL?

night girder
#

I don't use Facebook either 🤣

#

Never had a account haha.

twin dew
#

Not going to bother changing the fingerprint thingie.

night girder
#

I read X lost million EU members. (in the last months).

#

I wonder what happened hehe

#

In recent months, the decline has been greatest in France, Poland and Germany. The number of users who visit X at least once a month, with or without an account, fell by 2.7 million, 1.8 million and 1.3 million respectively. In the Netherlands, the number of X users fell from 8,371,941 to 7,474,280. That is a decrease of almost 900,000 users. The number of Belgian users is now 2,266,281, which means that it has decreased by more than 288,000.

twin dew
#

Unfortunately about third are in France and Germany.

#

Of the voting population.

night girder
#

I am proud.

#

Now I am waiting for people to switch to Signal.

#

Whatsapp is going to introduce AI that can't be disabled.

twin dew
#

Much less than Slovaks who voted Robert Fico back in.

night girder
#

And I just don't want that. It's the nail in the coffin. I held out as long as I could. But I am not installing AI garbage on my iphone 6s.

#

WhatsApp defends 'optional' AI tool that cannot be turned off

#

WhatsApp says its new AI feature embedded in the messaging service is "entirely optional" - despite the fact it cannot be removed from the app.

#

Whatsapp on shrooms I believe.

#

"It's 100% optional, but you can't turn it off" hehe

#

The Meta AI logo is an ever-present blue circle with pink and green splashes in the bottom right of your Chats screen.

#

Interacting with it opens a chatbot designed to answer your questions, but it has drawn attention and frustration from users who cannot remove it from the app.

#

Oh.

#

And here is the cherry on top, which confirms, Whatsapp is tripping balls:

"We think giving people these options is a good thing and we're always listening to feedback from our users," WhatsApp told the BBC.

#

signal?

#

Signal is an American open-source, encrypted messaging service for instant messaging, voice calls, and video calls.

#

yup

#

all the cool kids use it

#

but I got whatsapp because of work and family.

twin dew
#

Even when they shouldn't, like for US government stuff.

night girder
#

Oh, I think what you mean.

twin dew
#

Trumps people using Signal instead of official US encrypted communication stuff.
In large part to go around mandatory logging of everything.

night girder
#

I still don't 100% understand, why we went from SMS, to this shit.

#

And now I have to have whatsapp, because else people "can't" contact me. Which is bullshit, they can call and sms.

#

or they can e-mail me. But noo, that's not enough.

#

Also, with SMS you didn't have the bullshit of "oh, but whatsapp is owned by evil US corporation".

#

now we have to swtich to telegram.

#

Oh no, telegram is owned by evil Russians. Let's all switch to signal.

#

And who owns Discord?

#

Discord is different btw.

#

oh yeah, I posted that I think

#

but what I meant is; I can lvie without Discord. I don't lose contact with family or collogues.

#

somebody should be smart and launch an alternative.

#

So people can ditch Discord and someone else can become rich 😄

#

Before Discord, I remember Teamspreak, Ventrillo, Xfire etc.

#

applications come and go.

#

except google. You can't kill it.

#

Xfire was pretty cool 😄

#

I know, but not as popular I think.

#

Glory days are over.

twin dew
#

Because it always was pay to use outside very low user amounts and using your own computer to run the server.

night girder
#

you mean server in general, but yeah.

twin dew
#

Without significant licensing fees, there is very low user max even if you host yourself.

night girder
#

but what's the differentce between Discord Nitro and the 1000x other cash grabs they have going, or renting a server as a guild/clan for Teamspeak or ventrillo?

twin dew
#

Mumble/Murmur exist on that front.

night girder
#

because that's what we did back in the day, just pay as a clan/guild for the infrastructure (server).

#

never heard of that.

#

I was more IRC.

twin dew
#

Open source alternative.

#

For voice comms.

night girder
#

You know, I always appreciated how easy IRC was.

twin dew
#

Which still exists?
I'm still using IRC right now.

night girder
#

Yeah I know it exists.

#

just saying, it was easy. No account needed. Easy to get servers up and running. Not bloated.

#

wonder what niche irc server Baldur is in 🤣

#

beucase a lot of it is not leggit

night girder
pure karma
#

whatsapp on ai actually

twin dew
night girder
#

I know. Not what I meant.

#

Whatsapp says not. But they also say they listen to feedback. But don't want to turn of AI after feedback.

#

I predict a new law in the future, that says; you can't force feed AI into everything.

#

especially if AI is from adversaries of EU. (US, China).

#

5,076 entries hehe

twin dew
#

And lot of channels are secret and not listed.

night girder
#

Yeah that's why I was wondering what you were still doing on there.

#

In my experience, it's a bit dark webby (torrent, illegal stuff, ...)

#

but then again my experience is a few decades ago.

twin dew
#

And just lot of various hobby-related or just friends group specific channels.

#

With us old farts still hanging around.

night girder
#

I understand.

#

I am happy you are here Baldur.

#

The anchor of this channel pretty much 🤣
The one who stays calm and mature.

#

Because I am neither of those hahaha

#

account is probably gone.

#

you said you never used it for years ... hehe

#

How can you know ... 🤔

#

right ...

#

is that what we call it these days

#

I hate RNG in games.

#

10% dropchance of item. Killed boss 30 times. Item not dropping. 😠

#

So I should have gotten the item 3x times by now, but that's not how chance works ofc. Why don't they program soft RNG. Like every time you kill boss, increase dropchance.

#

and the boss fight isn't even fun anymore.

#

nah, don't like that game that much.

inner shale
#

we should ask Baldur about computers

night girder
#

blame me hehe

#

maybe nobody cares 😛

#

and there are legal torrents.

#

kade appreciates it.

#

new Battlemage-gpu.

#

Eh ... I have a feeling something is off with my AMD hardware. Not 100% sure it's AMD though hardware being flaky.

#

It's seems thise machine can do two things.

#
  1. Either it works.
  2. Either it doesn't work and shuts down with no information whatsoever.
#

I've never, ever seen a blue screen, or a normal error or crash with information.

#

It's always hard shut down. Which is very odd to me.

#

oh, I can't call it blue screen anymore. It's green screen now.

twin dew
#

AFAIK also only in insider builds at this time.

night girder
#

Yeah Baldur, but that's how it works.

#

It starts with insider builds. Then get's pushed broad.

#

unless issues, backlash etc.

twin dew
#

And some stuff is pulled without either of those with unknown MS internal reasons.

night girder
#

they double down on that one so far.

#

Probably put in so much money, they don't want to lose that feature.

#

Micirosoft is such a weird company to me.

#

Why the fuck, would anyone think; let's change the color of the BSOD.

#

I think they have nothing to do and are just inventing work for themselves. Job protection ftw.

#

I've seen it happen so many times, developers just pull work out of their arse, without thinking if the costumers wants that. They do it, so they have a job and a task to do during the days/weeks. So dumb.

What (Nvidia) GPU will give Satisfactory 60 or more frames on Ultra or High graphics

#

Looking into cloud gaming because Mythic engine on my Mac is only around 40-60 frames on low graphics

Thinking about removing the shroud of my EVGA 1070 Ti, and replacing the black parts with FICSIT orange, with the FICSIT mascot sticker on the top

Not gonna be doing anything to the warranty, since it's wildly out of date

#

#satisfactory message @somber fox I once fixed a friend's lag issues by telling them to update their drivers that were 2 years out of date

visual tree
#

Meanwhile, I got a notification from nvidia today there is an update for my GPU and I'm afraid to install it lol

#

Because nvidia is having issues with drivers bricking GPU's

somber fox
#

nvidia sucks and is only tryna juice people for the idea that RTX is good.

visual tree
#

You thought planned obsolescence is bad? Wait till you hear about the term "forced obsolescence" through software updates

somber fox

I dont know anyone who wants to game with raytracing on at all times.

All hail AMD! 😄

My next GPU is going to be AMD for sure

Already switched from intel to amd 5 years ago

somber fox

intel only had amd beat through the FX line, the second Ryzen hit, intel fumbled

I just listened to GS.

somber fox

Not me getting a casual smooth 90fps in the open world of Oblivion Remaster.

night girder
#

Oblivion: 2006 hehe

#

But I haven't looked into the remaster.

#

but if they just slapped on some new textures it shouldn't be that hardware heavy game.

twin dew
#

@somber fox But basically you seem to know just enough to not realize you don't know.

somber fox

still laughing in IT.
