dire igloo
languid gulch
#

true, tho i bet even that looks incredibly efficient from an american perspective

languid gulch
#

would it be possible to use the DDR5 socket to slot in a dedicated REBAR stick?

#

like some kind of weird in-between component like Optane?

twin dew
#

What?
ReBar is just about how PCIe device can use main CPU RAM without CPU involvement?

languid gulch
#

right, but what about using the socket to let the gpu use an entire dedicated stick of ram that way

twin dew
#

And just putting more VRAM onto the cards would probably be cheaper and easier?

languid gulch
#

it would, but right now the wealthiest company on earth seems to have 0 interest in doing that

twin dew
#

And why would they be interested in adding extensible memory?

#

And Optane as tech wasn't really weird in-between.
Intel just tried to only go for cache, and NVDIMM markets for some reason.

#

And even didn't really push the marketing on the enterprise side cache market.
Only consumer cache, and then enterprise NVDIMM.
When the only products they really moved in bulk were the Optane SSDs for enteprise markets in the end.

#

Because their marketing for the consumer stuff made it seem they only work as cache with Intel chipsets for example.
When that wasn't the case.

#

They were completely normal NVMe drives.

#

And those Optane DIMMs were segmented to only the most expensive CPUs, and almost no-one wanted to use them as you rather had just more actual RAM if there weren't some special considerations.
And then you needed bespoke coding to really take advantage.

wanton orchid
#

the marketing ruined it completely
Asus always talking about some special directly connected to cpu stuff specific to optane with U.2 ports

#

always found that marketing bullshit stupid

#

among other things I hate Asus since

#

always some marketing bullshit driven hardware design

twin dew
#

U.2 is just another type of PCIe connector.
Basically cabled equivalent of M.2

twin dew
#

Was pushed somewhat for one or two MB generations, then died.

#

On consumer side.

wanton orchid
#

I mean of course there is M.2

#

what's tye point even

twin dew
#

Which had very limited PCB area.

#

Limiting drive capacity.

wanton orchid
#

M.2 ports simply needs a small bracket to be direct connect cable capable

twin dew
#

And those convert to U.2 usually.
And there are U.2 to M.2 adapters too.
2.5" drive thingie that has U.2 connector and place for M.2 drive.

#

And U.2 still lives in workstation and server markets.
With U.3 also now existing.

#

But time to go and switch summer tires to my car ->

pure karma
#

it would also turn into another thing windows would suck at managing properly

glossy glacier
#

Optane was great if you had the right workload for it
Not really something you encounter in consumer space

twin dew
#

Yeah, but Intels marketing made it very confusing to prosumers.
And in Enterprise they marketed mainly that Optane DIMM thing to very high end, instead of just as very good scratch, log or cache drive.

#

Mut ny o kesänakit alla.

#

And tiered that Optane DIMM support to just the most expensive CPU tier.

#

Which was faster than PCIe versions.
But slower than DRAM, and taking DRAM slots.
So if you didn't need extra fast permanent storage, it was better to just put in more normal DIMMs.

Random tech question:
Is there a physical difference between ctrl+c key combination and copy option from context menu?
Was trying to copy table with images from webpage (firefox) to a spreadsheet (libreoffice) and first one gave me 'select text formatting' popup that lost all formating vs second option taking several seconds then pasting the actual table into sheet.
I find myself confused, thus something I believe must be wrong.

Prenatal phthalate exposure and adverse birth outcomes in the USA: a prospective analysis of births and estimates of attributable burden and costs
thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(23)00270-X/fulltext

Phthalate metabolite concentrations were similar to those identified in women of childbearing age in national surveys.47 The distributions of phthalates were similar across trimesters (figure). Generally, phthalates were not strongly correlated with one another (appendix p 86), except MECPP, MEHHP, and MEOHP, which are metabolites of DEHP. The highest concentrations measured were mono-ethyl phthalate and phthalic acid (appendix p 87). As described in other US populations,48 non-Hispanic Black participants had higher concentrations of multiple phthalate metabolites, except for DEHP replacements (table 2), and Hispanic or Latino mothers were found to have higher urinary concentrations of LMW metabolites and lower concentrations of the HMW phthalates, DEHP and phthalic acid. Maternal age was inversely related to all phthalate metabolites, and tobacco use and lower maternal education were associated with greater concentrations of phthalate metabolites. No differences were identified by child sex. Higher LMW metabolites and phthalic acid were identified in primiparous mothers compared with nulliparous mothers, but differences were not noted among multiparous mothers compared with nulliparous mothers.

Uptake and physiological impacts of nanoplastics in trees with divergent water use strategies
pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2024/en/d4en00286e

Using a hydroponic growth chamber, we have shown that PS-Pd-NP uptake into trees depends on exposure concentration and duration, rather than the trees' water use strategy. Furthermore, PS-Pd-NP were translocated from the roots into aboveground tree organs (stems, leaves or needles), which ultimately changed certain physiological functioning. In particular, photosynthetic efficiency decreased upon PS-Pd-NP exposure where the broadleaf species showed effects sooner than the needle-leaf species, possibly due to NPs compartmentation within needles facilitated by the endodermis. Our study has shed light on the intricate relationship between concentration–time and concentration–species in shaping plant uptake dynamics. Our main finding underscores the significance of interaction between concentration–time and concentration–species on PS-Pd-NP uptake. The observation that stem association remains unaffected by treatments highlights its critical role as a primary conduit for transporting NPs to leaves or needles.

World’s first demonstration that forests trap airborne microplastics
waseda.jp/top/en/news/80174

“We found that airborne microplastics strongly adsorb to the epicuticular wax on the leaf surface,” explains Akane Miyazaki, senior author. “In other words, these particles accumulate when they stick to the waxy surface coating of leaves.”

Plastic rain in protected areas of the United States
science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aaz5819

Using high-resolution spatial and temporal data, we tested whether plastics deposited in wet versus dry conditions have distinct atmospheric life histories. Further, we report on the rates and sources of deposition to remote U.S. conservation areas. We show that urban centers and resuspension from soils or water are principal sources for wet-deposited plastics. By contrast, plastics deposited under dry conditions were smaller in size, and the rates of deposition were related to indices that suggest longer-range or global transport. Deposition rates averaged 132 plastics per square meter per day, which amounts to >1000 metric tons of plastic deposition to western U.S. protected lands annually.

Bioaccumulation of microplastics in decedent human brains
nature.com/articles/s41591-024-03453-1

The present data suggest a trend of increasing MNP concentrations in the brain and liver. The majority of MNPs found in tissues consist of PE and appear to be nanoplastic shards or flakes. MNP concentrations in normal decedent brain samples were 7–30 times greater than the concentrations seen in livers or kidneys, and brain samples from dementia cases exhibited even greater MNP presence. These data are associative and do not establish a causal role for such particles affecting health.

"Why? Who knows. Microsoft is a billion dollar company but can't even send unified mails."

#

That's why I said that earlier.

#

So let me get this straight;

For all these years. Tech companies are like; if you see a mail, that looks different. Or with a different e-mail.
DON'T CLICK ON ANYTHING.

The same tech companies:

Let's just send mails to the SAME e-mail adress, but with different layout depending on which account. That will 100% help our users
spot sus e-mails.

#

Microsoft net worth as of April 18, 2025 is $3.083T.

twin dew
#

Because of instead of some complex form mail with different text inserts per language, they just have separate complete mails sent depending on language, and the localization team for that specific language fucked up, or it hasn't been updated to match latest US English version?

#

For thing that almost no-one will bat an eye at.

All I read are excuses.

Next-gen Nova Lake-S processors said to use new socket R.I.P. LGA-1851.  If this rumor is true, it’s really bad news for users of the LGA-1851 platform. Intel launched its 800-series motherboards only in Q3 2024, and it seems that they may support only one generation of processors. Reviewers asked Intel multiple times whether the platform […]

actually LGA1954 would be incredibly easy to remember since its just WW2+10

Intel numbering is a nightmare for me: LGA 775, 1156, 1366, 1155, 1150, 2011, 1200, 1700

Compare that to AMD and you will understand why I can't memorize intel sockets lol

languid gulch

i mean, at least the numbers are how many pins there are

no idea how many pins AM4 or 5 have

That might confuse some consumers who will think that more pins mean better cpu and will therefore think intel 2011 is the newest generation with most pins

"[Public Announcement – Intel Socket 1984 Launch Event]

“Big Brother is Booting You Up.”

Ladies and gentlemen, comrades and overclockers—

Introducing the all-seeing, all-controlling Intel Socket 1984: a revolutionary leap forward in centralized processing, surveillance... and freedom! (Just kidding about that last one.)

Built to be doubleplusfast and doubleplussneaky, Socket 1984 doesn’t just process data—it watches it. Whether you're editing documents, watching cat videos, or writing thoughtcrimes in Notepad, it’s already logged, categorized, and silently judged.

Why settle for privacy when you can have party-approved performance? With built-in support for Intel’s TruthCores™, Socket 1984 ensures your machine only runs approved facts, all clocked at 2+2=5 GHz.

Features include:

Ministry of Thermal Control cooling support

Compatibility with Newspeak-compatible chipsets

Zero Room for error—literally, it's soldered down. Forever.

“Winston Mode” — a failsafe that deletes anything subversive and replaces it with Minesweeper.

So remember:
WAR IS PEACE.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY.
IGNORANCE IS CACHE.

And the future? It's a boot, stamping on a motherboard—forever.

Intel Socket 1984
The last socket you’ll ever need.
Because you don’t choose the processor—the Party does."

#

*used ChatGPT for that

twin dew
#

So Intel doesn't have socket names, just the exact technical type being used.

#

AM5 with same naming would be LGA-1718.
And AM4 would be PGA-1331.

#

And that 1366 has more as it had three channels of RAM, when the one before and after it had just two.

#

And 1155 and 1150 were actually using basically same socket part, just with different key, and the CPU had different amount of pads.

#

Basically making them incompatible for not socket physical reasons.

#

Just changing the pinout for some reason.

wtf, why do I need a broadcom account to download VMware....

twin dew

Because Broadcom bought VMWare and has steadily been killing it by trying to make more money?

Basically anyone who used them has been trying to get away once the price increases were announced.

#

VMWare Player was completely killed for a time.

💀

#

Guess I'll download a vmware workstation from some other source then

twin dew

Workstation hasn't been free ever or at least not in long time?
It was that VMWare Player that was free for noncommercial use.

visual tree
#

Oh right, I think I might have used VMWare Player instead of workstation

#

Don't remember since it was long time ago

twin dew
#

Ah, remembered wrong:

2024 change to freeware
In May 2024, VMware Workstation Pro became free for personal use, with only commercial use requiring a paid license, and free VMware Workstation Player was discontinued as unnecessary.[15]

In November 2024, this change was expanded to include commercial and educational users, thereby making the software free for everyone. At the same time, however, Broadcom discontinued official technical support for the product, instead directing users to seek help from existing documentation and the community.[16]

#

And in 2015, VMWare Player was renamed to VMWare Workstation Player and moved to use same version numbers as the Workstation Pro.

visual tree
#

You won't believe how difficult they made it to download VMWare.....

#

Made an account with a temporary email but still took me some effort to find the download website

It's not as simple as click on "Download VMware Workstation Pro". You have to search for articles and then download VMware
