what would be interesting if if they did the same charts with Radeon

twin dew
#

And Titans also had professional versions back then.
Those were what the die was actually made for, just reused on "gaming" card.

#

Basically Nvidia used to have professional cards, and gaming cards.
Then they added Prosumer card in between.
First as Titan branded ones, and now as X090 named card.

#

Where they use the biggest die for professional cards without the certified drivers.

#

And with less VRAM at this time etc.

tribal kraken
#

I've kinda lost belief in "certified drivers" with the work/quadro cards when using them with SolidWorks. With new SW releases there still can be graphical problems, and changes are that while you have to disable some graphical feature to get it work with, while gaming card works perfectly.

twin dew
#

Yeah, they are snake-oil.
But some places require that.

#

And they are always "This driver version with this software version".

languid gulch
#

i'd also love to see any evidence that nvidia would absorb losses or accept responsibility for a product that's flawed due to their GPU putting out a shit result

tribal kraken
#

For larger companies where desing computers are managed by IT deparment, they just use older versions which are known to work

Anyone know the legality, even a little bit, about having a small screen on the back of my truck so that when someone is too close, it turns on saying something like “you are too close”

languid gulch

iirc it's illegal because it's a clear distraction to those on the road

hey i wouldn't mind a little LED on every electrical connection in a car to let you know if it's actually plugged in & working 🤣

Damn, AdBlock doesn't work anymore on Firefox so I have to install uBlock origin

#

Which loads videos normally while in the past, I had long loading time with uBlock origin

#

Google is really going aggressive against ad blockers no matter the browser

willow pike
#

ublock origin on firefox is unbeatable

#

the us government is telling google to spin off chromium

#

(the CURRENT ADMINISTRATION hates Big Tech for a perceived liberal bias so that might actually still go through)

visual tree
#

Don't know why I had issues with uBlock origin on firefox in the past but now it's working fine (no longer have issues with long loading)

willow pike
#

this being the case I can see a spun off chromium suddenly supporting ad blockers again

visual tree
#

Hope uBlock origin works for some time on firefox and doesn't meet the same fate as on chrome...

willow pike
#

firefox has no plans to ditch NetRequest, the extension API that allows UBO to function

#

they also don't have enough of a market share to get away with ditching it

visual tree
#

I have an uncomfortable feeling Google is going to start banning accounts who use ad blockers soon but hope I am wrong...

willow pike
#

for any chromium browser you need to use for whatever reason, use ublock origin lite, which is not as powerful but still great

willow pike
#

plus, you can still use youtube when signed out, they're not gonna change that

#

neutering adblockers in chrome is their strategy to defeat them; they went to war with UBO and lost completely, so they now prevent adblockers from updating their own definitions at speed; instead they have to go through the chrome extension store approval process, which can take days or weeks, during which UBOL will be ineffective against youtube

#

meanwhile real UBO can update pretty much in real time

visual tree
#

Companies have been cracking down on ad blockers really hard in recent years

willow pike
#

it's been google's long term plan for like a decade

#

but with the US telling them to split off chromium, and the EU slamming them with the DMA/DSA, those days may be numbered

#

I need a hot air soldering station tbh... since I wanna do surface mount stuff anyhow

dire igloo
#

Only issues I've been having were

  1. A broken switch (but since I'm using aftermarket ones, that ain't on Keychron)
  2. "Frozen" inputs where a key is registered as staying pressed when it has been released - not conclusively troubleshooted yet, could very well be the KVM switch

In short, that neighbor is screwed because she has no valid arguments which would help her in court

Saying the cabinet is obstructing the view from the balcony is not really a valid argument if you ask me. If that were the case, you could say people are not allowed to build houses nearby because you won't be able to see nature in the background

i know that modern HDDs use helium inside so that they can spin faster

Not spin faster.
Have more platters by making the read heads be closer to the platters.

languid gulch
#

could you take the platters from one, and just have it more or less open air, just really really slow reads in cases of recovery?

twin dew
#

For best recovery gear, you don't need to spin the platter at all.

#

So you can even read physically fragmented platters.

languid gulch
#

ok is there a video on that kind of thing, because that sounds amazing to me

twin dew
#

But your premise was false, as the point of the helium is to cram more platters into same space, from making less turbulence, so the read heads don't take as much space.

languid gulch
#

good point

#

so to read them do they have to be in a helium environment?

Im not sure, thats why doing little testing myself. I've remember reading some review, or Youtuber say that if the other CCD is active, it can have negative impact on the 3D cache CDD. But atleast for Satisfactory at 4K with 5090, no noticeable difference. Need to play more

twin dew
#

Might have been change from the original implementation, where the Windows was discouraged from trying to assign the game to the frequency-CCD by putting those cores into deep sleep.

#

Might be better implementation now where the core assignment is more intelligent.

But it works well enough, at least for this amount of testing. Will just play the games with all cores active, or just the 3D side active, and see how it feels and shows on FPS counters

The Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 OC can be essentially converted into an Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC using a BIOS flash, and also adopts its clock frequencies and power limits. The shader units, of course, cannot be reactivated.

The Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 can now essentially be converted into an Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT using a BIOS flash, and then also adopts its clock frequencies and power limits. The eight deactivated compute units of the Navi 48 XT and the missing 512 streaming multiprocessors cannot, of course, be reactivated, but this process is probably unique in its form and opens up entirely new possibilities for the first time.

languid gulch
#

yea this pops up before i can read it

night girder
#

The fact that the Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 OC, unlike the larger Asus Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC, only has to make do with two instead of three 8-pin connectors doesn't detract from the performance. A few other things are currently still under observation.

#

Why do I smell trouble in the water... (doubt that's a saying, but it is now)

languid gulch
#

🤣

#

mixed metaphor i think

#

blood in the water

night girder
#

People going to fuck up their GPU, then complain they don't know what happened.

languid gulch
#

yea i'd only try it with a dual bios

night girder
#

Currently, we still need to eliminate some minor instabilities in idle mode on the desktop, which are likely caused by the high core clock speed. More information will likely be available in the corresponding thread soon, and the PCGH editorial team will continue to keep a close eye on this exciting topic.

languid gulch
#

lol yea no shit

night girder
#

They know what they are doing ... right? hehe

languid gulch
#

like how they put a Nissan Altima drivetrain into the Murano

#

shockingly, adding another half ton of mass burns out the transmission

night girder
#

I need Baldur for more context on this one.

#

How can a two 8 pin, perform, like the XT (which is a three 8 pin) and not cause issues? 😒

languid gulch
#

because the 8pin plugs are designed to handle 250% load

night girder
#

And if that works, why does the XT have 3x8 pin connection? hehe

languid gulch
#

the 12VHPWR has fucked our perspective with a 10% margin. PCIe power cables are way overbuilt

night girder
#

Then why does XT not run on 2x 8 pins?

languid gulch
#

because it'd technically be over the limit

night girder
#

Regulations maybe?

languid gulch
#

it falls under the "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" standard

night girder
#

Fascinating story. I want to know how this is going to end.

languid gulch
#

it should be ok, but if you're using subpar cables, it might go poof

#

iirc Dawid tested it a few years ago

night girder
#
  1. I wonder how Nvidia will react.
  2. I wonder what Nvidia can do about it, if anything.
  3. I wonder if there will be GPU's burning up soon or people going to buy normal version and flash XT bios on it. And thus safe money. And hurting Nvidia.
languid gulch
#

oh nvidia won't do a thing

#

they're off in their own little world

night girder
#

But, my 3rd point. It can hurt Nvidia's revenue? If word gets out, why pay extra for XT version? 😉

#

The article does mention that the normal version will never be the same as XT.

languid gulch
#

it's a problem of inertia

#

nvidia has 90% market share right now

night girder
#

Global market?

languid gulch
#

yup

night girder
#

That's a lot.

#

They gained a lot because of AI I think.

#

Maybe not gained, they become more dominant.

languid gulch
#

nvidia has a ton of big fat long-term contracts with retailers & prebuilt PCs that have to expire

#

and AMD has to put out a better product at a price tier plus get some of those contracts

#

look at how well ryzen has done since basically 2nd gen, & they're up to a whopping 24% market share vs intel

twin dew
languid gulch
#

yea, so it's more like a shitty 9070XT than a boosted 9070

twin dew
#

And that chip they have on the card they flashed cannot do the higher frequency at same voltage as chip binned for 9070.

night girder
#

That doesn't answer why XT has 3 8 pins hehe

twin dew
#

That is just VBIOS OC.

twin dew
night girder
#

Either one is overengineered. Or one is performing above what it can handle.

twin dew
#

Even when it actually can do 300+W

#

Safety margin 😜

night girder
#

Yeah, Cuyar was correct.

languid gulch
#

304W board design, so it technically needs the 3rd PCIe 8pin

#

idk if that's a regulation or industry thing

twin dew
#

Nah, 2x 150W from connectors and 66W from PCIe slot.

#

With 2x 8-pin.

languid gulch
#

right, but they expect people to OC it, bumping it past the 375W

night girder
#

Even pulling 317W hehe

twin dew
#

Just that the third connector doesn't cost much, and "looks" better.

#

Same as so many MB coming with two EPS-connectors now.

night girder
#

(screenshot is from article btw).

languid gulch
#

like how i drive my car in sport mode even though i'm not a lead foot. i just like not having to move the accelerator pedal that much 🤣

#

my 6600XT red devil has 8+6 pin even tho it's a 160W board

#

talk about overkill

night girder
#

Speaking of sport mode, someone told me that after you drive in sport mode, before turning off the car, you need to drive around in normal mode for a bit before turning off.

languid gulch
#

mine's electric so i don't have to care

night girder
#

BUT! They didn't explain why ...

twin dew
#

Only if turbo.

night girder
#

And honestly, I didn't believe em.

languid gulch
twin dew
#

Turbos need to let cool down with coolant and oil still circulating.

night girder
#

Because all sport mode does in my care, is change in higher gears.

twin dew
#

Or the bearings can fail much faster.

night girder
#

Ah, not gears. The word is slipping my mind.

languid gulch
#

CVT?

night girder
#

RPM!

languid gulch
#

oh

jagged snow
#

Changes shift points

night girder
#

Is that correct?

languid gulch
#

yea basically

night girder
#

rotations per minute.

jagged snow
pure karma
#

shifts later in the RPM range were the most power is made usually

night girder
#

Yeah, so that's all sport mode does afaik. (for my car that is).

languid gulch
#

yea, some will stiffen suspension

#

most just do drivetrain stuff tho

night girder
#

It's a country man 😉

#

Not really a sport car, don't know why it has a sport mode.

languid gulch
#

my car needs no suspension stiffening, it feels like a boulder going down the road

#

it's 15cm shorter than my last car, but 600kg heavier

pure karma
#

i cant stand driving anything were even the slightest throttle input jerks you back and forth constantly

languid gulch
#

i hate one pedal driving

#

i tried it & it felt like a forklift

pure karma
#

just dont use the brakes and then your good

languid gulch
#

useful for low speeds, but ew for cars

night girder
#

How does one pedal driving work? Where is the brake?

languid gulch
#

the second you lift your foot

#

it's braking

night girder
#

Do the brake lights also go on?

languid gulch
#

yup

twin dew
#

Just regenerative braking, not braking braking.

languid gulch
#

this is for an EV btw

night girder
#

Ah EV!

twin dew
#

But basically you adjust the speed directly with the throttle position.

#

Instead of asking for power or like.

languid gulch
#

yea you need a really stable foot for it

twin dew
#

Traditional ICE throttle just controls how much air the engine gets, in combination with the RPM it is at.
And then fuel is fed to suit that air amount.

#

So very "convoluted" feedback loop between the throttle position and engine power output.

languid gulch
#

lol

#

imagine cut corners on it

#

*lifts foot
*intake slams shut, engine suffocates & dies

pure karma
night girder
# languid gulch yup

It would drive me crazy if I drive behind a vehicle and whenever they release the pedal the brake lights go on 🤣

twin dew
#

As in how much air the carburettor passes when no throttle input.

languid gulch
languid gulch
night girder
languid gulch
#

yup

#

it's called coasting

#

thankfully they added that into my car

night girder
#

Yeah, I like to do it too. Braking is a waste of energy (of the car).

#

😄

pure karma
#

but then again most the things i drive dont have brakes anyway

night girder
#

Skateboard?

pure karma
#

you hit the brakes and either the brake lines aren't even fucking connected or they literally dont slow you down at all

night girder
#

Curious, is this happening within EU?

#

Because that sounds not lawful.

pure karma
#

no canada lol

languid gulch
#

this is mine. 2023 Bolt EUV (the long one)

#

sold in Europe as the Opel Ampera

night girder
#

@languid gulch The same color?

languid gulch
#

oh yes

#

white is almost a necessity when it can hit 50C outside

pure karma
#

im not even surprised

night girder
pure karma
#

so many suv sales and suv's around in general now

languid gulch
#

it doesn't even count as an SUV in the US 🤣

#

i think they call it a subcompact SUV

night girder
#

Ok, what's the science behind colors and temperature? I know white* reflects heat. And black absorbs heat. But how can colors affect temperature?

pure karma
#

the cars around here can be sumerised as esentially 70% suv's 20% trucks 10% random other cars

languid gulch
night girder
#

If I paint my PC case and every part white, will it suddenly drop in temperature? hehe

night girder
languid gulch
#

technically yes

twin dew
#

Not when internal heat.
But point was with sun caused heating.

night girder
#

Because color... is just a color... I understand materials holding energy.

languid gulch
#

also keeping it out of light will drop the temp by a bit

pure karma
#

yea but not by much obviously unless your bringing it outside and into the sunlight and stuff

languid gulch
#

it's not a gigantic difference when it comes to "normal nature stuff", but 10-15C inside the car is definitely noticeable

twin dew
night girder
#

And if you would reflect inside a hardware component, you increasing temperature.

twin dew
#

How much is reflected of the energy incoming from sun as various types of light, and how much actually heats the body of the car.

night girder
#

Yes, but why? I am looking it up though.

pure karma
#

i have no idea but lighter colors reflect more of the light

twin dew
#

White is when all visible wavelenghts reflect.
Other colors are when some of them have been absorbed by the thing we see as some specific color.

night girder
#

Isn't white the combination of all wavelengths of colors? If that's so, you could say it's "saturated" and reflects.

#

While black is the absent of color, and has more room to absorb wavelengths.

twin dew
#

Yes, but with external illumination and color by reflection, that means all the various wavelengths got reflected equally.

#

And brighter white, more got reflected.

night girder
#

Sorry, for this side road. Haha, Cuyar was talking about his car 😄

twin dew
#

Different from emissive color.

night girder
#

Suddenly wanted to know the science behind it.

twin dew
#

Where the object is actually generating light.

#

And not just reflecting external light.

night girder
#

The bigger L lenses of Canon are white for that purpose.

#

Because you don't want your lens to absord too much heat.

#

Atleast that's what my teacher used to tell me. Maybe it's just a gimmick.

#

It would make sense to go for the bigger ones since they have more surface.

#

Oh shit, I was right.

No, the real reason for the white finish is in fact heat reflection. With super-telephoto lenses having such a long barrel, and therefore more surface area to absorb heat, painting the barrel white means there's less chance of thermal expansion.

languid gulch
twin dew
#

And on the other hand, if you want to EMIT as much heat out as you can, you use black.
But for that to work, that black object must be warmer than surroundings.

night girder
#

That's why they also wear black in hot countries that get ice cold at night.

night girder
languid gulch
#

oh just the stock ones

night girder
#

Ah, I am a sucker for "cool" looking rims. It can really make a car.

languid gulch
#

i might swap out the tires because these just suuuuuuuuck

#

but not until they wear down more

#

16k on it so far, so a ways to go

night girder
#

Just go drift a bit on a parking lot 😛

languid gulch
#

i've never even floored it yet, i'm kinda scared to

#

it's not the most powerful car i've had, but definitey the highest power to weight

night girder
#

You don't need to floor it to drift haha

languid gulch
#

oh i know

night girder
#

But yeah, don't do anything stupid

languid gulch
#

idk if i could even put it sideways without it rolling

night girder
#

You should be fine ...

languid gulch
#

wet road maybe

#

i never had to care about any of that with my civic 🤣

night girder
#

I don't know, do modern cars often roll?

languid gulch
#

american ones yes

night girder
#

bad cars hehe

languid gulch
#

yup

#

well, tall cars

#

i don't mind it too much, i have a bad back. getting into small cars hurts

night girder
#

I don't care if it's big or small, I just like fun cars 😄

languid gulch
#

this bolt is definitely the most fun car i've ever had

#

no transmission is hilarious on the road

#

if you need to pass someone, it'll accelerate at 70kph like it does at 0

night girder
#

But it doesn't sound to be very good in corners.

#

Or let me correct, fun in corners 😄

languid gulch
#

for an american car it's actually not bad

#

it's really heavy, but it's all low down

#

1800kg with me in it

night girder
#

I never drove a mustang car but I heard one thing about it. Not even sure if it's true. But mustangs should be good in going straight. And that's about it hehe

#

And that's the most American car I can imagine

languid gulch
#

oh yea american muscle is all about straight lines

night girder
#

In need for speed, I always tried to make a mustang that could drift 😛

languid gulch
#

mustang, camaro, charger, all are ok straight line & absolute garbage in corners

#

it's doable, but you need as much done to the suspension as the rest of the car costs 🤣

night girder
#

What I enjoy most in a car is having both speed and agility (with safety always in mind).

languid gulch
#

100%

night girder
#

If a car lacks speed but is very agile, I don't find it very fun 😛

languid gulch
#

i love having the regen plus normal brakes, it's definitely nice when i need it

night girder
#

I just realize, speed is the wrong word.

languid gulch
#

acceleration?

night girder
#

I meant (horse) power or acceleration indeed.

languid gulch
#

yea when i'm at the lead on a light, i'm usually 100m out ahead of everyone else after about 5s just because of the torque

#

torque & no shifting

night girder
#

EV's are ahead on that.

#

Once was passenger with a Tesla S, thing lifts off.

languid gulch
#

you don't even really feel it once you get used to it

#

i had to drive my mom's car a couple months ago, & everything felt weird

night girder
#

For a while, I though I was going to miss the sound of an engine.

#

But I realized, that I never hear my engine because I always playing music 😄

#

So once EV is more matured, I don't mind getting one.

#

One thing I do hate sometimes is the fake grills.

languid gulch
#

i'm hoping we're in the 1900s-1930s experimentation with EVs, and the industry & regulators will finally get their heads out of their asses & standardize a bunch of stuff that's right now a bunch of wild west bullshit

night girder
#

I am mostly waiting for charing stations.

languid gulch
#

that too

night girder
#

And prices to settle down to see what's up.

night girder
#

Because I want to see the prices by the time the world is mostly transfered to EV.

languid gulch
#

gas stations 100 years ago also had no standards kinda like now with charging stations

languid gulch
# twin dew So you want EVs to die?

nah, i want some things to not be inconsistent, like how petrol cars had no agreement on shifters, starters, pedals, etc until they sat down & all agreed to the same thing

night girder
#

I assume charging is cheaper per KM than fossil fuel?

languid gulch
#

sorry, meant 1900s-1930s with petrol cars

languid gulch
twin dew
night girder
#

I think they are here to stay.

night girder
#

Just not sure in what capacity.

languid gulch
#

oh 100%, EVs aren't going away

twin dew
#

Yeah, but where my original comment came from :D

languid gulch
#

ah got it

#

yea they definitely died for a while

night girder
#

Dumb question, does the engine need cooling for an EV?

languid gulch
#

a bit

#

nowhere near as much as a gas engine tho

twin dew
night girder
#

Is that why they don't have grills on the front?

#

Because they just don't need that airflow?

twin dew
#

Yes, but also aerodynamics.
Most have active aero intakes.

languid gulch
#

it doesn't need a full fat traditional car radiator, more like what you see for a transmission

twin dew
#

Where they control with movable flaps how much cooling air is let in, as that makes the aerodynamic efficiency worse.

languid gulch
#

and cooling while charging can be as intensive as driving

night girder
#

Oh, the car needs active cooling while charging?

languid gulch
#

oh yes

twin dew
#

Or heating in some cases during winter.

night girder
#

So it consumes a bit of power to cool-down/heat-up while charging?

languid gulch
#

& the faster the charging, the more cooling is needed

twin dew
#

Battery must be kept in right temperature range to not lose capacity fast.

#

And at upper end you would get battery fire from the internal heat.

languid gulch
#

just like how your phone heats up when you do fast charging vs trickle charge

night girder
#

But, a phone cools down from itself right?

languid gulch
mental oriole
#

@night girder somehow solved my fps drops. Updated system packages and added some steam launch args and played several hours without issues. proud

night girder
#

There are not vents are anything. What I was wondering, is that the car turns on cooling?

mental oriole
#

and rebar wasnt the issue.

languid gulch
night girder
#

Interesting.

twin dew
#

Some phones can throttle from excess heat, even in use.

night girder
#

So while the car is charging, it's also wasting a tiny bit of energy.

languid gulch
#

what's really dumb is that the heater (at least in my car), since it doesn't have a gas engine, uses the absolute ancient "heating coil with air blowing over it" as the cabin heater

#

massively wasteful

night girder
mental oriole
#

Yup. I sure hope so.

night girder
#

Must be fun times for car engineers.

languid gulch
#

thankfully i almost never have to need it

night girder
#

New challenges.

twin dew
#

Heat pumps cost more, have much more failure points, and only really work in specific temperature ranges, so for lowest temperatures, you need that direct electric heating anyways.

languid gulch
#

yea true

#

1 step short of "just start a fire, bro" though 🤣

night girder
#

Why do they all look so ... I don't know.

languid gulch
#

i figured out why

night girder
#

Not my thing. Especially the front.

#

I think it's the missing grill 🤣

languid gulch
night girder
#

Or it's too futuristic?

#

Look at them all.

languid gulch
#

1969 Chevy Corvair. check out the front

night girder
#

It looks so weiiird.

languid gulch
#

was an air cooled rear engine

night girder
#

Maybe it's because I am focusing on it.

#

Like if I look at the back of the car and middle.

#

It's all 👍

languid gulch
#

fenders & hood look kinda like a corvette, and then.........wtf

night girder
#

But once I look at the front.

languid gulch
#

i know it can just be another body panel, but yea, give it some bling ffs

night girder
#

If only we could convert regular cars to electric. I don't want to drive a space car.

languid gulch
#

basically crate engine conversion kits

#

for old classics

night girder
#

Haha, was already looking up EV retro cars 🤣

languid gulch
#

i know Ford's been messing with doing mass conversions

#

since you can buy the electric Mustang's motors & battery separately

night girder
#

Thing is, I am not buying any American cars atm 😄

#

Too expensive. I have to stick with the local brands.

languid gulch
#

yea, talk about throwing a wrench

night girder
#

I hope BMW does something cool.

languid gulch
#

would be interesting to see if there's any mercedes/bmw/VW conversion kits for older models

#

range would suck, but hey, no gas needed

night girder
#

Or just make normal looking EV cars.

languid gulch
#

that would be nice

night girder
#

I don't know, it's probably a engineer thing like Baldur said. But they look ugly atm. Too futuristic.

languid gulch
#

or do a big fat rebate trading in a gas/diesel for an electric

twin dew
night girder
#

See 👆 Knew it.

twin dew
#

Currently.

languid gulch
#

what shocked me was that we're up to 8% EVs in the US

twin dew
#

Then on top of that base shape, designers do put some greebling.

languid gulch
#

i saw someone call the Bolt a jelly bean & i can't unsee that

twin dew
#

But the base shape differences are from going for aerodynamics over the conventional car shape.

#

But then doing it in SUV, which is opposite XD

languid gulch
#

yea i bet the new VW bus loses about 20% range with that front end on it. looks like you're pushing a barn door down the road

night girder
languid gulch
night girder
#

Because that's what I am mostly curious about. I am not a non believer. Just sometimes still a bit skeptical about certain things.

night girder
languid gulch
#

Texas of all places has a ton of wind

#

Iowa's going nuts with it too

night girder
#

Oh I forgot, I heard about that on a podcast.

#

They pumped a lot of money into it a while back.

languid gulch
#

we don't do too much offshore wind here (for now)

night girder
#

People protest against offshore here

#

Their argument; it ruins the view.

languid gulch
#

if they went onto the water

#

where it'd be in view

night girder
#

We do have some along the highways.

#

And in the fields of farmers 😄

languid gulch
#

i wouldn't mind seeing them myself, lets me know that we're not sucking down oil & chewing on coal

night girder
#

But in reality, we buy a big % of ⚡ from Germany each year.

#

And that's mostly coal.

languid gulch
#

my area has the biggest NPP in the US, so we're basically set for now

night girder
#

Still a long way to go.

languid gulch
#

nuclear power plant

night girder
#

Ah, for the record.

#

I did "google"

#

It wasn't helpful 🤣

languid gulch
#

🤣

#

"nuclear PP" might have given some really wrong answers

night girder
languid gulch
#

i wanna see Thorium reactors now that we've solved the pipeline issues

night girder
#

We did what now?

languid gulch
#

yup

night girder
#

Meltdown risk; near zero.

#

Radioactive waste; minimal.

#

Damn, China nice one.

languid gulch
#

the main issue building it has been that the molten salt would eat through any pipes, we've apparently solved that in the last year

night girder
#

Yeah, China build one.

languid gulch
#

also with a thorium reactor none of the products can be made into a bomb

night girder
#

United States Researched thorium since the 1960s but abandoned for uranium

languid gulch
#

yup, we wanted nukes

#

and nukes

#

and more nukes

night girder
#

Can't you make thorium nukes?

languid gulch
#

nope

night girder
#

Ah, that's why it's so safe hehe

languid gulch
#

best you can do is a halfway dirty bomb

#

thorium's just radioactive enough to heat up a bit, but can never hit criticality

night girder
#

We have to see what issues do arise from the new plant.

languid gulch
#

definitely

#

once they're up & running & stable, it'll also be one hell of a giveaway if you're wanting to build a nuclear weapon instead of just doing power generation

#

granted, uranium reactors can also be used to make stuff for nuclear medicine

#

& iirc thorium won't do that

#

but to me that's one of those things that can be negotiated & produced/managed at an international neutral location

night girder
#

Norway is also testing Thorium.

charred relic
#

notepad++ is awesome 😄

#

a reactor is only really gonna be a potential bad sign if it's the right kind of design, a breeder reactor

#

they produce, as a byproduct, plutonium atoms heh

#

Not really the best option these days as it's more complex and expensive and as it turns out there's plenty of uranium

#

Like or not, right now nuclear is the cleanest energy source

night girder
#

Thorium isn't uranium.

#

And it works differently. At first glance, has more potentional than uranium.

charred relic
#

and btw

#

nuclear is green energy.... outside of the mining which is used for any of those industries in some form it's only by product is heat and steam

#

three mile island was the last incident we had here and it was contained so... not to mention safety in that industry improves constantly so they're even safer now

#

Used to live near the Savannah River facility, honestly nobody there thought anything about it lol

#

Dad worked there for the GAO at the time, got a pretty neat tour although they wouldn't allow folks into the control room

#

It was... impressive

languid gulch
#

our wakeup call here was when some idiot in an ultralight decided to violate Palo Verde's airspace not too long after 9/11. F-16s scrambled & broke the sound barrier to get to him

charred relic
#

BTW a Boyscout build a nuclear reactor once... for a badge...basically heh. Although realistically that dude was going to build one regardless... he had everything other than enough uranium, he needed more

#

he did have a neutron source to get things tarted so he was a hair away from a working (and very dangerous) reactor capable of criticality

#

oh and... it was a breeder type if i recall as well so yeah some kid making plutinium atoms doens't seem like a great strat

languid gulch
#

"On Jan. 30, a small experimental airplane piloted by a photographer was able to fly directly up to the plant before being directed away."

night girder
#

Ah, can't read it.

charred relic
#

the thing is he could fly into the building and do nothing important heh

night girder

"being directed away" involved F-16s out of Tucson ready to shoot it down 🤣

night girder

aka, we don't comply with the EU. 🖕

charred relic

Basically he would have done a bunch of money in superficial damage and... died

night girder
languid gulch
charred relic
#

I couldn't damage the SRS with a van full of small arms, nothing important anyhow I mean I could destroy some offices

languid gulch
#

just a photographer in a small plane, but also, what idiot decides to fly a plane near a nuclear plant in the US as if nothing's going to happen

night girder
#

I blame traffic control hehe

charred relic
#

not sure what the regulations are on that but I'd imagine they are clear up to a certain altitude

#

just to keep air traffic out of the general area

languid gulch
#

yea, Palo Verde's far enough out to have its own airspace & be clear of Sky Harbor

charred relic
#

Like try traveling into an airports bravo zone without clearance you'll get chewed out and probably have to make a call when you land

night girder
#

I've seen a video of someone not complying with air traffic control, until some fighter jets showed up.

#

People do stupid stuff in the air.

charred relic
#

and if you don't respond and deviate you get the F-16 treatment lol

languid gulch
#

i have a hard time blaming anyone for it. we got to see 4 airliners turned into massive cruise missiles

charred relic
#

I'm guessing he didn't even have a radio

night girder
#

I don't understand, it must be a privilege to fly, why risk it by doing stupid shit.

charred relic
#

the ultralights i think you can just fly...

#

makes them popular for hobbiest types

night girder
#

I don't think that's allowed here.

charred relic
#

there are still rules regardless

night girder
#

afaik, we have strict rules.

charred relic
#

...and common sense like maybe I shouldn't fly too close to that nuclear site

night girder
#

or not fly in the presidents airspace.

#

because it was a shortcut hehe

charred relic
#

I'd be steering AWAY from a nuclear site if i saw it heh

#

imagine a dogfight against a f-16 and an ultralight heh

#

they could just jet wash him down :/

night girder
#

It would make more sense to send a helicopter

charred relic
#

next minute you are face to face with an apache pilot

night girder
#

sending out F 16 is expensive.

charred relic
#

Just send up a WWI biplane

#

more than enough to get it done

night girder
#

or ground to air

#

What we need are supersonic drones.

#

Armed with missiles ofc.

charred relic
#

pew pew

night girder
#

imagine if you could use drones vs F - 16's. That would reshape the battlefield.

languid gulch
#

i mean, russia's kinda trying that rn. not going too well tho

night girder
#

Not a crazy idea. Not sure if it's a viable one though.

pure karma
night girder
#

No, it's a drone hehe

#

you could equip them with different weapons for different missions. And have the ability of speed. That would be cool.

languid gulch
#

those won't be a thing until supersonic fuel efficiency exists

night girder
languid gulch
#

well yea, launched from a blackbird

night girder
#

Introduction date 1969
Retired 1971

#

🤣

languid gulch
#

"followed by at least four unsuccessful operational D-21 flights over China, before the program was canceled in 1971"

#

so not viable

night girder
#

But possible!

languid gulch
#

oh it's possible

#

i suspect that if the US found a need for it, we'd have one already

charred relic
#

im supersubsonic

languid gulch
#

plus the sonic boom would kinda give away a surveillance drone

night girder
#

Not if you launch from homefront or outside enemy territory.

languid gulch
night girder
#

You launch quick, slow down to be stealthy and then return.

night girder
languid gulch
#

we probably have so many high resolution low altitude satellites that could do the exact same job that it's unnecessary

#

that's what killed off the blackbird

night girder
#

Yeah, but we've seen what drones are capable of now.

languid gulch
#

oh strike drones sure

night girder
#

There are even "water" drones and such.

#

Pretty sure they are looking to see what else they can do now with drones. 1971 was more than 50 years ago

languid gulch
#

yea, 1 step better than a missile or torpedo, now you can have a person controlling it instead of hoping for sensors to work

night girder
#

And like I said, you can equip drones with weapons.

#

And the drones return. Cost effective.

languid gulch
#

yea, russia still doesn't really have a direct response to the Sidewinder missile 🤣

night girder
#

And drones dropping nades into trenches or tanks is scary AF.

languid gulch
#

yup

#

and now they're showing off RPG drones

#

handling the recoil

night girder
#

Speaking of drones more general, our police force has special guns to shoot down drones.

#

it's just a big net they launch at it to capture it hehe

languid gulch
#

check out the videos of japan's police drones that net & catch other drones

charred relic
#

gotta catch em all

night girder
#

Oh wait, not drones. Just a gun.

languid gulch
#

if you want some batshit fun, check out Phoenix police car catchers

night girder
#

Japan has drones fighting drones????

#

South Park was right 😮

languid gulch
night girder

was pretty funny episode.

Phoenix police used a grappler to detain a suspect fleeing from authorities on State Route 51. The suspect was detained and booked on multiple felony warrants.

pit

night girder
#

yeah that one, it has risks.

languid gulch
#

100%

#

too many deaths with it

#

plus it's a pain to do it right

#

do it wrong and both cars roll

night girder
#

spikes are pretty great too. Little tubes to let the air out of tires if they get stuck into them.

languid gulch
#

spikes are ok, but i like the grappler. less risk to others

night girder
#

Yeah even spikes has risks if they keep on driving, which a lot of them do ofc.

languid gulch
#

plus you have to set up the trap for it

night girder
#

I've seen so many videos mostly in the US.

languid gulch
#

yea we've done a ton of crazy shit in the past, this seems like one of the less crazy ideas we've fielded

night girder
#

it does happen here too, but we don't send out helicopters to film it

#

there is some footage of police car dashcam and chases. But it's rather rare.

languid gulch
#

we do it on a delay so that they don't get warnings as to what's going on

night girder
#

Yeah, but sending out helicopters to film it hehe

#

That's wild.

languid gulch
#

they're in the air already

night girder
#

Good entertainment.

languid gulch
#

usually doing traffic or other local news stuff

night girder
#

Trust me, it's not a thing here.

languid gulch
#

i know 🤣 & LA is definitely the worst offender for it

night girder
#

But good content, so thank you for paying for it I guess

languid gulch
#

we had 2 collide a while ago on air, so we largely backed off of it

night girder
#

That sucks 😕

languid gulch
#

i remember it

pure karma
#

ahh yes my favourite the alternative bluescreen

night girder
#

Image if windows told you that.

pure karma
#

Well it just did

night girder
languid gulch
#

oh wow, crash was in 2007

#

2 competing news agencies had their own choppers up, circling, & neither saw the other until they hit

#

thankfully nobody on the ground was killed, but both crews were

night girder
#

That's rough ...

languid gulch
#

youtube has the video, but i'm not gonna link it here because you can hear the screams

night girder
#

I am good 😅

languid gulch
#

so yea, things obviously changed after that

#

i think we only do 1 news helicopter in the air now

night girder
#

Even with all regulations and rules (and technology), accidents in the air are still a thing.

languid gulch
#

yea, but it had gotten bad here, & we're not even LA. think we had 4 or 5 choppers at one point

night girder
#

Why is that even allowed?

languid gulch
#

no idea

#

they thought it was safe, until it wasn't

#

standard american logic there

night girder
#

learning the hard way. Let's hope there is a lesson learned here.

languid gulch
#

& i think it was the first time it had happened, at least with 2 news teams

pure karma
#

there was im prettysure now they all just colectevely agree to use whatever helicopter reaches first and then share the same footage

languid gulch
#

and i think they do shifts instead of having them all up in the air at the same time

pure karma
#

but i dont think theres a law so you do occasionally see multiple but there really shouldent be

languid gulch
#

i think channels 3/5/15 share a chopper now

#

"As of today, the five English-language commercial television stations in Phoenix share one helicopter under a pooling agreement, which is used by KTVK, KPHO, KNXV, KSAZ and KPNX."

#

In neither operation do pilots perform reporting duties.

night girder
#

Good. Sad it first had to come to this.

languid gulch
#

yea

#

and the pilots used to also be the reporter, with a camera operator on the side

#

so they were well known guys

#

they'd switch over to a camera looking at them in the helicopter when talking back to the studio

#

that's still done, but it's a dedicated reporter now

Trump: "there will be no cost increase for consumers"
Also Trump: "this is the formula we used to calculate it. As a weighted average, imported good will receive 41% tariffs."
The formula: "25% of all tariffs end up as a consumer-facing price increase"
Inevitable consequence: imported goods will (on average) see a price increase of 10.25%

And those inputs they put into the formula, like that, that only 25% of the tariff would end up in final price, and seller would take 75% of it as a hit...

#

But on the formula specifically:
Complete horseshit, and doesn't do what they say it does.
And the two "fixed" variables they put in it are just imagined and not based on any data.

languid gulch

big cats tend to have a clawed digit in a spot where a thumb would go, and they use it to trip prey they're pursuing

dapper schooner
#

that seems to make sense like a raptors claw used to rip appart thiere prey

languid gulch
#

they can concentrate on the other 4 landing properly when running

dapper schooner
#

i've always had a profound respect for the bigger cats for thiere versitillity and understand how that campassion can lead someone to owning a housecat,my mother however can't have them chewing on her breathing tubes,it's the only reason we don't have one

languid gulch
#

oh yea as a cat owner they're 100% assholes

dapper schooner

exactly lol

languid gulch
#

they can definitely be nice, but if they were any bigger they'd really try to eat you

dapper schooner

and normaly it would even be ok if they didn't chew through them faster then we could replace them and that was with spraying a deterent on thiere they just seemed to chew through it faster, lol

it's Adam Savage from Mythbusters

dapper schooner
#

oh sorry never watched that show

languid gulch
#

he's gigantic in the propmaking industry

#

he resurrected R2D2 for the 2nd trilogy

#

(it's a prop maul in that gif btw)

dapper schooner
#

it's not to say I've never heard of him just been too wrapped up in my own modpack development to realy pay any attention to much else

languid gulch
#
dapper schooner
#

one thing some game designers will never get is if you don't take the time to try and play your own game how can you expect it to be any good or even expect others to like it?that's why to me designing a game sould be just as fun and lucrative as actualy playing the game for yourself

languid gulch
#

yea i'm in physical pain whenever i see the devs for my mmo play the game

#

but they're also legendary for their incompetence

dapper schooner
#

that's what i'm saying though unless you try it for yourself how do you realy know if it's any good?you sould equaly be able to play what you also create

languid gulch
#

yea i've never seen them do that. best i've seen from them is running around in a single room slowly dying

#

and yea, i don't ask too much out of them, but being able to operate in the environments thye construct is one of them

dapper schooner
#

lol well some day you may be doing more it just depends on the direction you take now learning coding is one thing but also knowing where and when to apply it is another, and i am by no means an actual game designer but what i have learned from building my modpack is it takes a community to make anything worthwhile happen so you will always have to remember that for your fans and fellow beta testers

languid gulch
#

oh definitely

#

which is why it's so sad to see

#

it's also why i suspect it's a spite product designed to lock up the IP from being used anywhere else, & keep the quality garbage until it's truly worthless

dapper schooner
#

but you see it more and more when they develop so many mindless shooters with no real direction to go,i mean any idiot can pick up a gun and shoot it but to create something that is worthwhile, that's where the real skills lie

languid gulch
#

yea, too many of them fail at the basics

#

nobody's willing to invest in the long-term viability, just the instant payout

dapper schooner
#

and that's just it too many remain short sighted just on market investments and not the true entertainment value that the fans are paying for unless they have to buy additional dlc wich just becomes rediculous

languid gulch
#

and i know that people will judge a new game that's still being developed vs a similar game that's been out for years, has a reputation, and has had more years to add in more stuff

#

i suspect that it's just fear driving both sides. devs afraid to not put out enough stuff, customers afraid to invest into something long term if it's not a good game
