dire igloo
#

Except it's absolutely loaded terminology: "army of influencers", "godsend for PC gamers"
So not even that is true because it's using bad faith rhetoric. You can't just reduce it to the raw information

wanton orchid
#

sounds like you are confusing system target and user target

#

real life batteries don't have percentage
so saying system use "only 90%" is at best bad wording
now user target settings is actual 80% of what the system estimates
it's so the user get more involved in battery life management and in turn can better use the battery for conditionally more capacity AND more life

#

you can say that if you set 80% limit on user battery target, the 100% system target is higher
than if you set 100% user target (in which case 100% system target must be restrictive to retain battery life)

languid gulch
#

i'd kinda like it if they just start "lying" about phone battery charge state like they do with cars. display a true 80% as 100%, true 20% as 0%

#

or at least have a setting to enable that kind of display. for some reason i hate seeing my charge stopping at 80%

#

yea, i'd rather it lie to me

#

although what would be better would be to bring back swappable batteries

#

they're pushing for user-replaceable by 2027

#

but still the garbage way of disassembling it qualifies

#

i miss popping open a case & just yanking it out

#

also they claimed that most of those changes were for water resistance rating, which i've never believed

#

i kinda wish that regulators would hammer down on companies' lies about why they do things. sure, it might get it the rating, but it being significantly cheaper is the main reason

#

and i remember other phones getting the same rating while having replaceable batteries

#

at one point i got me & my dad the same wireless keyboard because they were on sale, & when i opened them up, one had swappable batteries & the others were soldered. literally no other difference

twin dew
#

Harder to do, and easier for the user/owner to make not water-resistant.

That one is my mothers cat I look after when they are away. Also a dog too, but usually they are able to take the dog with them. But for that young cat that can get some of the food outside in summertime, like mouses and small birds the food is ~200€/year. For older cat if you want to take them to Vet, it can reach GPU levels easily 😄

#

It's still in the shader pipeline but it's basically huffing crack. And really really kicks ass

wanton orchid
# languid gulch i kinda wish that regulators would hammer down on companies' lies about why they...

I think the main reason is security, both for and against the user
for the user because they can't put bad modules in, frying their phones or spying on them, or worth
against the user because then you basically CAN NOT DISABLE a phone, it's permanently powered and listening, it's a big brother asset
for the user because you will not complain about data corruption after removing battery for a week or more

twin dew
#

Nah, just about making as slim product as possible for as cheap as possible.

wanton orchid
#

I'm tired of the arguments "people are stupid that's why"
"no it's the gov is evil"

like
grow up please
people are stupid AND the gov is evil basically

wanton orchid
#

i.e there is a whole bunch of issues for everyone with swappable batteries
so manufacturers just don't give a shit
it will take a long way to get swapable back (and I do want it too)

twin dew
#

Removing power for a time will not cause data corruption as first point.
Unless it is years. And the same thing will happen with most things over those long durations even if powered on if not intentionally scrubbing.

The always listening doesn't hold water either.
Because when you turn at least most phones off, only thing they will keep powered on is the power button circuit.

User modding phones doesn't really hold water because you can still disassemble the phone and do that anyways, just needs tiny bit more skill, mostly more annoying than secure.

wanton orchid
#

it's not only powering the power button mostly rn
it's at least also powering rtc and stuff
phones are designed to respond to pings
this also go along very deep sleep states which still respond to pings
(and I'm not really complaining about it, it is useful for lot of stuff like emergencies reporting etc..)

twin dew
#

Any proof on that, that turned off phones respond to anything?
Because that would just kill the battery life when off compared to reality.

wanton orchid
#

gms gps circuitry are listening on few mA
Qualcomm voice wake up modules listen with only few mA
not everything have to sink huge amount of power rn
radio beacons can lives for years with small batteries too
it's not going to allow any kind of very complex messaging but it can get pinged

#

this is obviously also an asset for corp agencies or both
it's a low power computing network at least

twin dew
#

And again, do you have any actual source for that claim?

#

Because that would be very easy to measure happening on the phone PCB.
And all I can find are bad rumors.

wanton orchid
#

each part can be found on their own in marketing materials (Qualcomm deep sleep listening module, beacons, and very low power gps and gms modules, also stuff like Bluetooth LE)
the 5g standard and phone standard mandated a lot of hardware assisted stuff for emergency notifying for instance
and phone have both a network and rtc wakeup path for notifications and alarm clock respectively

twin dew
#

Deep Sleep is device On state.

#

The state it is when screen is off and nothing real going on.

#

All those are Device On features... Just with reduced power.

wanton orchid
#

device state is mainly software defined
Qualcomm stuff is proprietary firmware level stuff

twin dew
#

But still with the chips powered.

#

Again, any proof that ANY phone EVER has kept the wireless chip active in any way when it is turned off, but battery is in?

#

With any amount of power input to it.

wanton orchid
#

Qualcomm also have a lot of tech part hates because of how cluttered and closer their stuff is
(and I like that it looks like backfiring a bit lately)

twin dew
#

Or the main CPU either.

wanton orchid
#

CPU have multiple parts, it's soc
no main cpu is powered for these modes

twin dew
wanton orchid
#

but I get what you mean

twin dew
wanton orchid
#

I'm talking about actual technology baked in already

charred relic
#

I had some genuis hanging out with a group of us once yapping about how he didn't trust the amazon echo device sitting there because it "spies" on us

twin dew
#

All that stuff is WHY the phone is able to last week(s) when ON, but not used, with the various stuff active.

charred relic
#

so i go... uhhh guess what pal

#

and started pointing out all the phones on the tables

#

mic, mic, mic, camera, camera, mic mic mic mic, camera

#

if they wanted to listen... they have been foir a LONG time

#

but i's alexa he's worred about lol

#

yes lets spy bia a niche item... or one virtually everybody has... which is more likely

#

chemtrailers are the worst... their theory doesn't even pass the first very basic test of logic...

twin dew
#

ALEXA is actually active and recording.
Most phones aren't, only if someone external turns it into spying device.
Which has happened and noticed from the increased power consumption.

charred relic
#

why use civilian aircraft when they have their own fleet of military aircraft that's much more secretive

twin dew
#

Mostly state actors and spouses.

charred relic
#

huurrr huurrrr

#

yes lets invovle countless civilians in our plot... or... use our own fleet of aircraft

#

as far as im concerned that theory is dead in the water just on that heh

jagged snow
charred relic
#

somebody reads about cloud seeding then next minute they think it's a conspiracy

#

well even if it didn't that's not the point

#

they are worried about the government or something

twin dew
charred relic
#

in which case they don't need a wake word....

#

it just listens always... which is what they'd want

#

if you 're worried about amazon then... sure i guess

#

not sure why but ok... but no they were worried about the gooberment

twin dew
#

And that has been confirmed that Alexa has been sending recording of each activation to Amazon.
And Amazon is about to completely remove toggle that could disable that.

charred relic
#

and i mean if the right people wanna know what you have to say they can find out...

#

but joe redneck isn't on their radar heh

#

I'm sure the government is real concerned hearing you argue with your wife about forgetting to buy the "worshin powders"

twin dew
#

So phones CAN record and send.
But don't unless hacked or like.

Alexa has been explicitly doing that to everyone since the start.
Any time it thinks it hears a command, it records and sends it to Amazon servers, unless explicitly disabled by account owner, and that disable is going to go away.

#

Ok, went away few days ago.

charred relic
#

The problem with any mass consumer device having anything too devious is... people look over all that shit

#

so if the government was putting shit in phones somebody would figure that out pretty quick

wanton orchid
#

I'm not having time currently to link you Qualcomm own marketing arguments
but they don't even hide that their stuff is meant to be controlled by nearest antenna
and only Sony Samsung etc have some hand on the modem firmware, they also do what they are told too
getting hand on independent 5g modules is extremely costly but also extremely complicated (it's basically military grade controlled market with private quotes and shut down of any other retailers like if resold on aliexpress or Amazon)
it also have multiple region version with " all but US" and "All but China" being the main ones "All period" being insanely hard to get

twin dew
#

So phones CAN be danger.
Alexa has been known to be active danger for years at this point, with actual proof.

charred relic
#

I've seen people worried about tech since... forever lol

twin dew
#

Or even multimeter.

wanton orchid
#

again I'm not claiming conspiracy
I'm claiming they are designed to get wakeup on some special events
and again, I'm not even claiming it's a bad thing
but it's part of why battery would be expected to not be easily removable

charred relic
#

Shit Juas Priest was writing about this kinda shit in 1982... Electric Eye

twin dew
#

No matter how closed source firmware, or black box design.

charred relic
#

"Always in focus. You can't feel my stare. I zoom into you. But you don't know I'm there"

#

Pretty sure that was around the time the UK was rolling out CCTV shit

#

(which is where they're from)

#

And look at it now... they can identify known faces heh

twin dew
#

So unless you actually bring some proof, that isn't bad take on marketing material, then I will keep saying you are spouting a conspiracy theory around.

#

Because that would be so trivial to prove to reasonable degree.

charred relic
#

heh that video of that new security they were doing at a couple of airports and dude comes up in the system with his photo and all and they're wondering how they have their face

#

like bro... drivers license? hello? mcfly?

#

Also the lets us fingerprint your l;ittle kids in case they're abducted... riiiight

#

heh... not concinved that has ever helped

#

but they sure do have a lot of prints now in case those folks do some gloveless crimes later!

twin dew
#

And for few tens of thousands you could get specific type of testing done on the phones chips to see exactly which parts of the chips are active, even in lower power state, inside the dies.

wanton orchid
twin dew
#

But point is that almost anyone at home could prove that the radio receiver chip is getting power when the device is off.
And there is tech you could get commercial lab to use on the phone to see which exact parts are active in any of the chips on the phone.

#

Or the main SOC etc.

charred relic
#

scopes can see some interesting things

twin dew
#

And nothing.
Just conspiracy theories.

charred relic
#

people will use that black epoxy shit to conceal components in boutique electronics... kinda pointless

#

you can scope out exactly what's in there heh

#

except certain details like diode type or somethinb but ehhh that's where you try both common types and see which sounds closest

#

germanium clipping diodes def have a sound

wanton orchid
# twin dew And nothing. Just conspiracy theories.

I mean I will search details later but you will never find anything if searching for anything alarming
I'm / will simply search for power delivery circuit state details, Qualcomm chip integration docs and marketing etc etc
I mostly seen what I'm talking about from Qualcomm hardware capabilities details

twin dew
#

That Alexa recording to Amazon servers has been all over the news multiple times since Alexa came out.
For phones doing stuff when off, nothing except random forums with absolutely no proof.

#

Just same rumors going around and around.

#

For 7+ years.

wanton orchid
#

again I didn't talk about off recording

#

only about arbitrary wakeup

twin dew
#

That was just as example of "alarming"

#

That if the thing is actual, it WILL get to some news.

#

Or someone WILL post actual testing, even on some random forum that then will get all over.

wanton orchid
#

In the similar line of things
I expected the AMD ryzen jailbreak to exist way before news
it's only logical and it's easy to guard against exploit using it

twin dew
#

And again, as actually TESTING for that would be trivial to get at least clue it would be POSSIBLE, but no such results anywhere.

#

But I'm off to bed.

#

Also, lot of phones etc. circuit diagrams have leaked over the years to specialist sites.

charred relic
#

I'd be more interested in detecting any transmissions... with some of the wavelengths used now detecting something going on based on power use could be nye impossible

#

you can do a lot with 1/4 watt and that takes almost no power to generate

wanton orchid
#

btw doesn't lion battery sensitive to temperature changes even when not used ? which in some cases would require monitoring for safety ?

charred relic
#

never good for them to get too hot

#

But heat itself externally isn't as dangerous as the internal heat

#

I mean they get shipped in containers that sit in the sun and get unbearably hot inside

#

I've had the fortune of dealing with that

wanton orchid
#

"While older batteries were prone to overcharging, it’s impossible with lithium-ion technology."
I don't love finding "experts" online

charred relic
#

Well it is safer than what we had when i was a kid

#

nickel cadmium

#

those had the charge "memory" you had to deal with too

#

a lot of people used to those cells from back then ruined lithium cells by fully discharging them to reset the memory... which lithium doesn't suffer from

#

But the big big danger with lithium cells is over discharge, battery gets hot internally, fails... enters thermal runaway

#

not overdischarge but overcurrent

#

I should film what happens if I pull about 30A from a 18650 meant for flashlights and rated for 10A continuous lol

#

It's kinda like foreworks but more dangerous 😄

verbal raft
#

i think FSR AA would look better

#

and DLAA would definetely llook better

willow pike
#

supersampling to give double or even quadruple the samples for every pixel just isn't enough

#

not when modern TAA (ie DLSS) is using 16 past frames to draw its conclusions from

#

i think fsr2 uses that many too

#

you have subreddits like /r/FuckTAA bitching about it, but it really is the best option

pure karma
#

because most games force you into either using dlss, fsr etc or TAA with no option for native now

verbal raft
willow pike
#

cause native would look shit

willow pike
#

you take any modern game with all the shader effects up the arse and you run it without any AA, no TAA, no upscaling, just one pixel one sample, it'll be a noisy mess

willow pike

Ram OC is no longer a valid form of OC frfr

willow pike

and MSAA don't do shit for reflections, specular highlights etc

verbal raft
#

thats the advantage of spatial AA

willow pike
#

true; it just won't be temporally coherent at all

#

and you do need rather a lot of it to approach what TAA can give you

verbal raft
willow pike
#

it's also that shaders were so much simpler

#

we got characters with individually textured pores with specular highlights, you need some way of doing AA on that

#

MSAA wouldn't touch it

# visual tree According to EU, my Roomba is AI since it's automated lol

’AI system’ means a machine-based system that is designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy and that may exhibit adaptiveness after deployment, and that, for explicit or implicit objectives, infers, from the input it receives, how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations, or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments;

#

So yeah, roombas are AI

visual tree
#

I have an older model which I am not really sure if it contains any AI features. New models most likely have them (haven't really researched roomba products lately)

#

Noticed it keeps cleaning the same path where it passed though multiple times. Not sure if that's by design or something else

#

Sometimes it only goes through a specific path only once

dire igloo
#

Even if it's a dumb Roomba that mindlessly goes straight and rotates a random amount if it bumps into smth, one could still argue that it matches that definition

visual tree
#

Guess my nephew is AI then hehe

#

*with the exception that he cries when he bumps into something

dire igloo
#

Hm.
Would Wolfram Alpha count as an AI?

visual tree
#

No

dire igloo
#

wait, holup
A solar powered calculator is an AI system by this definition

visual tree
#

Although one could argue a cyborg is partially machine-based 🤔

dire igloo
#
  • Machine-based system? Check
  • Designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy? Theoretically infinite - tho idle unless it registers an input
  • may exhibit adaptiveness after deployment? No, but it's optional, so still check.
  • that infers [...] from the input it receives, how to generate outputs? Check-ish. It generates the output based on predetermined rules, idk if that counts as "infers how to generate outputs"
dire igloo
visual tree
#

I guess you could make human "AI-powered" with cybernetic implants at best but never purely AI because it's obviously not

#

I wonder if you could call someone an AI if you managed to upload their mind somehow

#

If they retained personality, it's definitely not AI but in other cases it might be

#

Actually, there is term for this: Uploaded intelligence

twin dew

It is often 1-3mm.

night girder
#

That sounds so small for airflow 😒 No wonder they have overheating problems hehe

dire igloo
#

could a net of differently weighted electrical connections count as a machine even tho it's made from biomass?

visual tree
#

For an example, scissors can't be defined as a machine but a radio could

dire igloo
#

well, there are two cases you want to exclude from the definition:

  • biological life
  • fully deterministic hardcoded automation
dire igloo
visual tree
#

Yeah, I agree you would have to include non-biological in a description

dire igloo
#

then what would you consider a neuron array?

visual tree
#

You mean, human neuron array?

#

I wouldn't consider anything biological a machine btw

#

But I think I understand at what you are hinting. Some people like to describe complex systems as a "machine" while others think of metalic devices when talking about machines

pure karma
dire igloo
pure karma

then none of it is true ai

if you have to give it anything other than its own code its not ai

dire igloo
#

The Thought Emporium is trying to make a neuron array like that and get it to run doom

dire igloo
# pure karma then none of it is true ai

that's not my point. if you want to regulate AI, you need to find a definition for it.
and that definition will either include things that aren't AI or not include things that are

#

your definition "no pre-determined inputs" is nonsensical because there are many non-AI system that accept inputs which haven't been hardcoded

#

and "no pre-determined outputs" is also nonsensical because an AI system can have pre-determined outputs and still be AI

#

I'll give you this definition:
"a non-biological system that accepts inputs and generates non-predetermined outputs"

charred relic
#

denying you bomb schematics means nothing

dire igloo

which is still very much wonky

charred relic

usually people looking to make explosives are looking for trouble...been my experience anyhow

charred relic
#

then im not sentient... according to that logic

#

becuase i have a pre-determined repsonse to an answer...

visual tree
#

I guess you could call the device itself a machine even though it contains biological matter

charred relic
#

*to a question

dire igloo
#

which you have just proven yet again

charred relic
#

AI would lead to sentience

dire igloo
#

by making the same point as me

dire igloo
charred relic
#

they are one in the same... you'll see soon enough

#

me... i might live that long we'll see :

dire igloo
#

so what's your definition of AI?

#

"a non-biological system capable of sentience?"

#

what's sentience?

charred relic
#

this is where he inserts words into my mouth

#

i'll just let them...

dire igloo
#

because the entire thing started with a shitty definition of what AI is

charred relic
#

im just saying an AI denying yo u the answer to something means nothing

#

that oculd be pre-determined, maybe not

dire igloo
#

and it's been about finding different definitions

charred relic
#

it might be, as me, simply not an idiot that will tell somebody how they can easily blow their arm off or kill folks

dire igloo
#

to show that the definition provided by MagicZ is dumb

charred relic
#

My point reminds, being denied information does not prove it was a pre-determined repsonse.

#

*remains

charred relic
#

i could just assume that about anything it says

#

if even if ask how it feels... that may or may not be a pre-canned response

#

I doubt they're yet capable of feeling

#

if any of you are around in another 50 years... just remember the old heads tried to tell ya it was going to get real scary 🙂

dire igloo
#

asked ChatGPT about itself, the answer was along the lines of "I don't have pre-determined responses, but I have pre-determined rules by which I adjust my answers"

charred relic
#

well the entire thing is rules

#

even an answer to how it feels could be supplied based on how it was programmed to begin with

dire igloo
charred relic
#

Well "AI" has existed since I was a kid

#

It could be stripped down to mean anything that shows any sign of intelligence

#

even basic path finding

#

the path isn't pre-programmed, it figures it out right... so that is a form of artificial intelligence

dire igloo
#

it all circles back to what your intentions are with the definition.
in this case, it's to create a legal framework in which systems like ChatGPT have to operate and what users have to consider

charred relic
#

The intelligence people are after now is... well just more advanced really since they want something completely autonomous

#

to program it and unleash it and it does thr est

dire igloo
#

they want a system that replaces human thought

charred relic
#

and believe me, eventually... sentience

#

they 'll stop at nothing less 🙂

dire igloo
#

anyways, if you were an EU legislator trying to regulate AI, what definition would you use?

visual tree
charred relic
#

human thought will be... eh

#

we'll just be meat bags eventually

dire igloo
visual tree
#

That will happen for sure

charred relic
#

that's one explanation to the fermi paradox

#

if other life is like us they destroy themselves before they travel to the stars

dire igloo
#

or they get to the point where they'd rather keep to themselves than announce to everyone around that they're there

charred relic
#

Pretty limited view but we only have us as an example so far...

dire igloo
#

before they actually make the announcement

#

(which we didn't)

charred relic
#

But the reason we won't stop with the AI until we get sentience is... well should be obvious

#

we want to become gods

visual tree
#

I completely agree with Fireworker we will kill ourselves first before we get an advanced Skynet like AI

charred relic
#

Well either the AI eventually... or something like anti matter

#

For an advanced enough AI we're just in the way heh

#

And anti matter is just scary stuff if you were to ever collect enough of it at once

dire igloo
charred relic
#

i believe it's pretty much a 1:1 energy conversion

#

both atoms are destroyed releasing all of their energy heh

#

Kinda makes a nuke seem like a firecracker

#

Especially when the other half of the fuel is the target heh

visual tree
charred relic
#

nukes aren't even as scary as people think

dire igloo
charred relic
#

scary yes, not as bas as people think though

visual tree
#

Not scary if you are at ground zero since you won't even have time to perceive pain or realise what happened 😅

dire igloo
charred relic
#

Secondary damage... that's what'll get folks there. Like if it's big enough of a war the cloud

#

gonna get real cold...everywhere

#

well most damage would be localized to the target, airburst means the fallout disperses fairly well with the weather

#

Plus it could end up being tactical nukes anyhow with nobody launching the big boys

#

like everybody knows the outcome of full on nuclear war

visual tree
#

While with nukes you know exactly what will happen

dire igloo
visual tree
#

Don't know much about physics but I guess it's hard to control a nuke once you start a reaction if that's what you are referring to

dire igloo
#

the point of a nuke is that at some point the reaction goes critical and you get runaway fission - which is also incredibly uncontrollable

charred relic
#

and the fun part is sometimes the fission part of a weapon is only there to start a fusion reaction 😄

dire igloo
#

with the nuke we know that it will happen and we intend for it to happen

#

with Skynet, we don't intend to

charred relic
#

but those weapons once the reaction is started it's a done deal

#

with do not have the tech or knowledge to stop that

charred relic
#

That's how nuts human are... oh look nuclear fission isn't enough lets make a fusion bomb that just uses fission to kick st art it weeeeee

#

also as far as I know there isn't anything that says there can't be anti matter universes

dire igloo
#

that's what I meant

#

as far as physics is concerned, matter or antimatter doesn't matter, the rules don't prefer one over the other

#

yet our universe very clearly does

visual tree
#

This bomb is theorical though and hope it doesn't really exist

charred relic
#

the problem with an anti mattter universe is while the universe might not care how things work inside it do

#

But just like dark matter we don't really know exact wtf it is

#

We might be real lucky we aren't anti mattter dominated, might not be compatible with life and surely wouldn't be compatible with how we're made

#

What gets me with anti matter is that it seems like something that doesn't actually belong here at all...But here we are collecting as much as we resonably can to study it 🙂

visual tree

Selling antimatter! Only $62,5 trillion per gram!

dire igloo

What used to be FIFA until FIFA decided that EA is too unethical of a company for them to do business with

cyan crescent

So fifa quite partnership with ea?

dire igloo

Yup

cyan crescent

Nice

dire igloo
#

That's why it's EA FC 2025 now

cyan crescent
#

Ea needs to fucking die

dire igloo
# cyan crescent Nice

If FIFA of all the organizations in the world is the one that decides that EA is unhealthy to do business with (presumably from an ethics standpoint), then that should be a pretty strong indication of how fucked up EA is as a company

#

Ironically: FIFA ending the partnership means that EA is no longer paying them to use the naming rights

cyan crescent
#

They are trying to put ads in games which we have already paid $70-80+ for already just to be able to play.

dire igloo
#

So unless FC25 sale numbers are much lower than they would've been as FIFA 25, EA is actually making money

I pay for base game and dlc. Thats it

dire igloo

It doesn't matter if you lose half your playerbase. You just need to get that one percent hooked and addicted

Strict morals, while noble, will eventually cause you to miss out on great games

cyan crescent
dire igloo
#

Helldivers 2 is a great example of how to do live service right:
Past season pass content is available for all time and finishing a season pass usually gives you enough premium currency to buy the next one

And the base game is not as expensive as many other AAA games

cyan crescent
#

Also recently, ive been getting whatever games i want to play on gog if available there.

dire igloo

It's a shame that their publisher fucked them over hard tho

cyan crescent

A game can be great and relatively cheap. Not many(if anyone) are asking them to put in 8k ultra realistic graphics. I just want good gameplay and story.

#

Good graphics are nice but not a necessity for me.

#

Dyson sphere program is a good example

dire igloo
#

Good graphics can upgrade good gameplay but can't fix bad gameplay

cyan crescent
#

Then you got devs that somehow make a modern game worse than a game from 2008 that had a smaller budget

dire igloo
#

It's corporatization vs passion

#

There are many MANY shitty games from 2008, no one ever remembers them tho

#

The ones that sticked did so because they were the best of their time

#

And you're comparing generic modern stuff to the best of the best from a previous era

#

Portal 2 Coop vs It Takes Two
Who would win that?

Tough choice, personally I'd go for It Takes Two

cyan crescent

Most modern games from big corpo now a days are shit. I stick to older games now or small studio games.

dire igloo

There are legitimate usecases, tho it's primarily upscaling

dire igloo
cyan crescent
#

What of frame gen? Its not even linked to the game so latency is the exact same as a lower fps

#

So a jello effect is created

dire igloo
#

Framegen is bogus for anything that relies on reaction time or fast paced inputs

#

But it's decent for cinematic graphics

cyan crescent
#

I dont want it in games at all.

willow pike
#

dlss upscaling is a real good form of AA that not much else can beat for performance versus quality. frame generation can eat my entire ass

cyan crescent
dire igloo
dire igloo
willow pike
#

I'm not really a fan of how it's branded as upscaling when you can still run at full resolution with it, but now it's called DLAA

#

the core tech is good

dire igloo
#

Many frames? No
But I'd rather crank up the settings and go 50 native to 70 AI than use 50 native or lower settings

willow pike
#

the one use for frame gen I have is satisfactory, where lumen gets me 80fps, I can use frame gen to turn that into 72 doubled to 144, and it makes building feel smoother. crucially, satisfactory is not a shooter. hell I turn it off when I go exploring and hard drive hunting

dire igloo
#

Yup, exactly

willow pike
#

that's an exceptionally narrow use case

#

anything where you shoot things, absolutely not

dire igloo
#

Anything where you don't need to react quickly or precisely chain inputs

willow pike
#

and most people don't use it to go from 72 to 144, they go from 40 to 80. nuh uh. bad

dire igloo
#

Wouldn't even run it for AoE if that tanked fps

willow pike
#

or 30 to 120 with MFG

#

eat my entire ass

#

also with satisfactory building I'm not whipping my camera all over the place and seeing frame gen artefacts

#

i don't use it in any other game

#

the idea of buying a gpu specifically to get DLSS frame gen is lunacy

pure karma
#

i generally use it to go from like 20fps to 35-60fps

#

but i play primarily casual games so im use to it

# jagged snow xmp turned off, rebar turned off, etc

Have to check if rebar is enabled on my system... I have a slight feeling it may cause issues in cyberpunk.
After a while (usually 1-1.5h of playtime the game slows down in framerate) Still playable but noticable, and feels sluggish. But then again... running proton could also do something funky with performance after a while of running...

glossy glacier
#

could be low vram too. didn't GN mention somwthing like this?

pure karma
#

generally speaking most my games start off running well and then after a while they drop a bit and then generally stay at a lower average but keep a higher consistency

mental oriole

But I will investigate further 🙂

night girder
#

Not sure if STALKER 2 is more stable now. But satisfactory could be good candidate to test.

#

But cyberpunk is very much a patchwork game.

mental oriole
#

yep. I'm playing through the dlc so that's why I'm noticing it 😄

#

But will test some other games for sure.

#

assuming bg3 patch 8 drops soon thats probably on the next list.

night girder
#

Also dope game.

#

Doesn't really push a system in my experience.

mental oriole
#

It does in act3, because it's quite crowded, but a sim/factory game game like satisfactory or dsp is most likely the bestcandidates to stress on. Assuming you have a beefy save for it. 🙂

really for stuff much past the WWII era hardware a more arcade style is better in a lot of ways... like Falcon 3.0 was a lot of un with detailed missions but the combat was sometimes pretty yawn because you never even laid eyes on the target.

The tank stuff good in that game? I play World of Tanks... used to play quite a bit and be fairly good at that one heh

Where Nvidia has been making the highest die nearer and nearer to the reticle limit over time, needing the price to be raised to insane levels, because it isn't supposed to be general product but specialist one.

languid gulch
#

i appreciate that GN finally did the charts showing how scummy the lies about their tiers are

twin dew
#

But basing it on the X090 was bad take.
Should have been cores on same tier, or based on X080.

languid gulch
#

i don't mind it tbh. he used "flagship" in the same way that nvidia has insisted on doing it since they added on the XX90

#

highest tier they insist on calling a gaming gpu to sell to gamers

twin dew
#

Just Titan getting renamed to 5090.

#

5090 is as much gaming card as the various Titan cards were.

languid gulch
#

yup, but it's nvidia's naming scheme he's criticizing, so using their own terminology against them is fine by me 🤣

twin dew
#

Point was that the gulf between 80 and 90 getting larger would have been shown even by basing everything on 80.
But would have given more realistic numbers for the lower end tiers.

languid gulch
#

& if anything, if he threw the titan cards in, it would have shown an even worse scaling

twin dew
#

Now the lower end comparisons were absolutely useless.

languid gulch
#

he did chuck out the 3090Ti, i noticed that

#

could also do our own charts with the titan GPUs included

twin dew
#

But basically the Titans and the current X090:s are about making the most performant card they can do when they don't have to care about die price.
And rest of the lineup has to care about the die price.

#

Without having the "Certified drivers for work cards" extra price tacked on.

languid gulch
#

the titan cards had that didn't they?

twin dew
#

No.
They had all the features, but not the certification.

#

Support for ECC VRAM mode and non-nerfed FP64 performance.

But no program certified drivers.

i thought that was why the rtx titan was $2500
