#

manual way, it didnt boot, then did the quick install and it worked fine (minus graphics drivers)

mental oriole
#

Tbh the quick install just removes a lot of the typing the billion commands you need to do.

night girder
#

Is the quick install process transparant, does it show you what it's installing etc so you can keep track it later?

#

Yeah, only drawback I could think of is the one I mentioned above. Transparancy/control for users.

mental oriole
night girder
#

If you got Arch linux, you want to have control. Else you woulnd't be on Linux (my opinion).

#

Pff πŸͺΏ ... I really need more mini computers.

#

M920Q is going to be firewall, so can't do anything else with it.

pure karma
#

idk wtf im doing but i found a funny word

mental oriole
#

Yep, the quickinstall is like selecing your, region, locale, gui type (KDE, etc). as well has a quickformat and partition for the drive.
Essentilally you get the bare minimum, and you get a box where you can type all the extras you want to install.

#

chroot is funny?

night girder
#

change * root, it changes root.

mental oriole
#

It actually allows you to install stuff in the os while being in the installer.

night girder
#

is it like sudo?

#

yes it is hehe

pure karma
#

why is it sad

mental oriole
#

Because you chose arch.

pure karma
night girder
#

chroot is an operation on Unix and Unix-like operating systems that changes the apparent root directory for the current running process and its children. A program that is run in such a modified environment cannot name files outside the designated directory tree. The term "chroot" may refer to the chroot system call or the chroot wrapper program.

#

So it's not like sudo.

#

Oh wait. That's cool.

#

So with chroot, you run it in seperate environment.

#

That doesn't have access to regular filesystem.

mental oriole
#

It can do some funky stuff πŸ˜„

pure karma
#

do i seriausly have to conect to the internet jsut to boot o my god

night girder
#

Virtual Machine like. Neat.

#

A chroot environment provides functionality similar to that of a virtual machine, but it is a lighter solution.

mental oriole
night girder
#

Would be super weird no?

pure karma
#

omg you do

night girder
#

Yeah, for packages.

#

But you can put em on stick? (not sure?)

pure karma
#

and its throwing a tantrum because its not happy about the blown 1660 super lmao

twin dew
#

Can be downloaded however and installed from local storage once there.

night girder
twin dew
#

Or get the larger installer images that already contain more.

night girder
#

Now you are not bored πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

pure karma
#

i still am

#

cause now im just looking at a black screen

night girder
pure karma
#

with a command line that says no if i tell it to boot or exit

night girder
#

The fun part is getting from black screen to working OS πŸ˜„

mental oriole
#

Yup

#

If it's your first linux install... I wouldnt recommend arch... seems I should have added a /s to that message...

pure karma
#

i need a common sense translator

night girder
mental oriole
#

The common sense translator says, do not install arch.

pure karma
#

what the heck is a ip-link

twin dew
mental oriole
night girder
#

And I want to see what's true or not πŸ˜„

pure karma
twin dew
#

What did you even install/boot to?

mental oriole
#

🍿

night girder
#

Baldur is already in support mode hehe

pure karma
mental oriole
night girder
#

And now MagicZ is actually listening? And looking up commands before executing?

twin dew
#

Trying to boot or install Arch Linux?

mental oriole
#

He is trying to install arch linux πŸ˜„

night girder
#

I mean, I don't see any harm into reading documentation about commands before just executing them.

#

So you actually learn.

#

Because Linux is all about commands.

mental oriole
#

I think he installed it once, but it didnt boot then.

#

So I guess re-running the installer or something

night girder
#

I would go quick install. (if I had to install arch linux for first time).

pure karma
#

i dont have a quick install option

mental oriole
#

it's a command

#

arch_installer or sth

night girder
#

Because I don't care about flexing rights that I did it all "manual".

#

Nice embed hehe

mental oriole
#

Very nice hehe

night girder
#

So it does seem that:

Different defaults than the regular installation process are used.

#

please mention so in support requests and provide /var/log/archinstall/install.log

#

but it's all in the install.log πŸ‘ (and if it logs everything, should be pretty transparent).

pure karma
#

yea but im not conected to the internet

#

im trying to do that but im very lost

#

wth is a qdisc noqueue state

mental oriole
#

Plugging an ethernet cable into the pc usually helps.

pure karma
#

i dont have a network switch

night girder
#

That's more documentation:

#

archinstall.archlinux.page/installing/guided.html

#

Warning:

The installer will not configure WiFi before the installation begins. You need to read up on Arch Linux networking before you continue.

#

🀣

mental oriole
#

xD

night girder
#

Why is everything in the arch document with a * (a but...)

#
  1. To install Archlinux do this. EXCEPT if this and that. BUT also remember this.
#

Just for the guide it's two notes and a warning. At the start hehe

mental oriole
#

wget pain

night girder
#

Kit, just curious.

mental oriole
#

ye? πŸ™‚

night girder
#

How much did you double check? And how much you just trusted Arch and went with it?

#

In the sense of stuff like: config.json

#

did you read the whole config.json they pasted on their install guide?

mental oriole
#

You mean for the installer thingy?

#

No. πŸ˜„

night girder
#

Yeah. Or did you just trust that everything is legit.

mental oriole
#

I just yoloed it.

night girder
#

Yeah, understandable, I would do too.

pure karma
#

where is the command to automatically conect to wifi breh

night girder
#

Because I am looking at the config.json and thinking, I don't want to check this whole file to see what it does πŸ˜›

pure karma
#

if it can automatically install itself why does wifi have to be the hardest thing

night girder
#
        "mount_options": [],
        "mountpoint": "/boot",
        "obj_id": "369f31a8-2781-4d6b-96e7-75680552b7c9",
        "start": {
          "sector_size": {
            "sector_size": null,
            "total_size": null,
            "unit": "B",
            "value": 512
          },
#

I am like wtf? obj_id ...

#

wtf is unit B?

#

Bytes? 512 Bytes?

mental oriole
#

B would stand for bytes I assume

night girder
#

So, if I had to check that whole file. I am good for a hour πŸ˜›

#

"disk_encryption": {
"encryption_type": "luks",
"partitions": [
"3e75d045-21a4-429d-897e-8ec19a006e8b"
]
},

pure karma
#

im going to go enslave a ethernet cable and conect to wifi later

mental oriole
#

Good luck.

night girder
#

You could also try Ubuntu.

mental oriole
#

but ye luks is like the only supported

pure karma
#

actually can you hook up a pc to another and have it work

mental oriole
#

If the other pc can act as a router

night girder
#

I am still confused why you need internet.

mental oriole
#

You can technically get that to work... but, good luck configuring windows as a router

pure karma
night girder
#

Oh.

pure karma
#

i cant even run the auto installer cause it cant find it

mental oriole
night girder
#

you playing Arch Linux on brutal difficulty?

pure karma
#

idk

mental oriole
#

pretty much

#

archinstall should be included by default in the ISO file btw.

night girder
mental oriole
#

So idk what you've done πŸ™‚

night girder
#

Without any other viable paths. Like having packages on a stick and plug it in or something.

#

Man, if only I could do virtualizaiton on my firewall.

pure karma
#

the command is there but you cant run it

night girder
#

which is the worst idea ever to do tired_jace

#

but if I did it, I could install Arch also hehe

mental oriole
#

It only forces ethernet if you want to customize the install. (which you mostly want to do) e.g installing a desktop environment.

night girder
#

But I would expect installer to setup internet.

#

And then let you download packages hehe

mental oriole
#

Fair

night girder
#

They even state that you need to read on wifi before using installer.

#

Because it doesn't configure wifi.

night girder
#

What desktop did you pick Kit?

mental oriole
#

KDE plasma. It seems to be the most straight forward one.

pure karma
#

you got to pick a desktop?

night girder
#

This one gives me windows vibe. 5.24

mental oriole
night girder
#

You gotta pick your own GUI if not mistaken.

mental oriole
#

Idk what it's called but there is one where everything is tiled.

night girder
mental oriole
night girder
#

I see.

#

arch should run on a raspberry right?

mental oriole
#

I think, never really tried.

pure karma
#

are all these stupid errors normal

#

what filesystem do i chose

mental oriole
night girder
#

Just know ext4 isn't compatible with others.

mental oriole
night girder
#

But for Linux, the better choice.

pure karma
#

do i have to make a user acount

mental oriole
#

yes.

night girder
#

admin
1234

mental oriole
#

Because root is evil

pure karma
#

then what is the hostname

mental oriole
#

The name of the pc

night girder
#

quickly change it

mental oriole
#

my password is ************

night girder
#

2345!

#

I improved it for you hehe

mental oriole
#

2456

#

aww discord removed the space at the end...

night girder
#

2 4 5 6

#

omg, it removes front spaces too.

mental oriole
#

Add a space as your last password character and you will cause problems hehe

pure karma
#

whats a superuser

mental oriole
#

is it
"KitLovesfoxgirls"

night girder
#

I put in 4 spaces between 2 and 4 and it deleted two of them.

#

The new discord is sanitizing spaces rofl

mental oriole
#

Including nuking your install at any point.

pure karma
#

so i put yes

mental oriole
#

To be fair, you need to run sudo and type the sudo password.

#

Or your user password

#

so you still can't nuke stuff.
superuser just means you can do superuser stuff

#

by running sudo <command> etc. (which is needed when you update stuff on your system.

night girder
#

the smart way of handling sudo. Even not giving admins just all power without sudo.

mental oriole
#

The principle of don't trust anyone.

pure karma
#

im guessing there is no way for me to screw up the autoinstall

#

but there probably is

#

im guessing i just hit yes to continue install

#

I FOUND THE CHROOT

#

what do i do now

#

ohh you dont need to put the / or it gets confused

#

dangit it rebooted to windows

#

i tought it was gonna crash i cant lie

#

it froze

mental oriole
mental oriole
pure karma
#

bruh can it stop spamming errors as the god dam password

#

so what is arch just a command line

mental oriole
#

no, it has a desktop, so either you didnt install one, or your installation is broken.

wanton orchid
#

ext4 is the most compatible and supported Linux fs
it will always work so it's a nice default

willow pike
wanton orchid
#

my feeling they went vanilla arch without documentation

night girder
#

we provided links to official guides

pure karma
#

the guide stops at this point

#

actually it stoped like 20 steps ago

night girder
#

doubts

pure karma
#

but the command line is esentially unusable since its just being spammed with errors

wanton orchid
#

you probably did not checked the "login manager" box

#

or similar

night girder
#

setting up grahical user interface

#

but there are no more steps? πŸ€”

#

I am not a drunken monkey 😦 I am just a monkey.

wanton orchid
#

or you didn't install graphic drivers

night girder
#

What errors are you getting?

pure karma
#

ath10_pci

#

x1439021739173219

wanton orchid
#

too often people just spam click OK instead of reading, even on error messages, then ask what's wrong

mental oriole
night girder
#

ath10_pci seems wireless network related.

wanton orchid
#

they probably are missing some drivers or it simply logs network activity

#

like probing and stuff

#

for instance libvirt will also draw qemu start on console

#

Anyway better do thing fully through from start instead of starting in a broken environment later

wanton orchid
pure karma
#

there arent any

#

dosent work it just boots back into the command line on reboot

#

ehh dosent matter

#

Rip HDD because im not fixing it lol

#

its going to stay corupted for the rest of time

wanton orchid
#

just go with endeavouros or the like if you cant do commandline

#

its been said A LOT of times here

pure karma
#

i just went on a sidequest

#

my real quest is still to fix all this stability bs

#

the problem is the results are diffrent every day

#

i got my eyes on the shared ram ussage cause its hella sus

glossy glacier
#

you have a 13th gen cpu magicz, right? then get a replacement

pure karma
#

well atleast they have the only thing alive in my system

#

so clearly somewhat competent

#

nerver had one of there drives somehow

#

only Toshiba's,WD M.2's and random e-waste random Prebuilt M.2's

#

nerver heard of it

#

why is my VRAM behaving so scuffed

wanton orchid
#

afaik usual toshiba used to be hitashi or seagate

pure karma
#

something i would love is more physical control over my setup

#

like physical switches or something to open apps

languid gulch
#

ha. 5060 & Ti are gonna be 8gb

#

nvidia's now apple

pure karma
tough owl
#

nvidia has a meal at dennys now

languid gulch
languid gulch
#

actually at this point just introduce a new add in card that's just vram. slot it however much you want

pure karma
#

Yea i was thinking about this why not reintroduce sli but less

#

so merge stuff like the vram and other things that wouldn’t be as limited as trying to shove an entire gpu through a very ineffective data strip

charred relic
#

Yo dawg we heard you like to game while you game so we added a video card to your video card.

languid gulch
#

i mean, that was a thing at one time

pure karma
charred relic
#

NVidia Double Pump Accelerator (tm)

languid gulch
#

2D & 3D cards

pure karma
charred relic
#

The buildcraft guy really hates other mods lol

languid gulch

pure karma
languid gulch
#

i'm talking about AGP era

charred relic
#

went back to can't power the quarry or other machines from it with anything other than it's own power stuff

#

which is all superlame

languid gulch
#

i wouldn't mind having a raster gpu with vram, and then a RT gpu

#

nvidia pushed RT as the thing to replace rasterization, & i knew that was absolute bullshit because nobody else was trying it, & the results were a special degree of awful

pure karma
#

I have hit 5000 screenshots

#

Since summer 23

#

my problem now is what do i do with them

languid gulch
#

sort em

pure karma
#

yea problem is then what

languid gulch
#

print them all off & make a gallery

pure karma
#

a video album and delete the rest? I guess maybe

#

im going to sort through a lot of them but i want to do something with them instead of just deleting all of them and calling it a day

#

surprisingly they only total out to 5.5GB

charred relic
#

i have a bunch of photos on my phone

#

19.4GB heh

#

Resistive heating with crappy windows in a cold climate, more like

languid gulch
#

yea kinda reminds me of the heater in my car

#

on the plus side it's warming up

#

i did 200km of charge in 3 hours today

#

i did insulation paneling on my garage doors, it's made a noticable difference

#

but also i have the exact opposite climate of you 🀣

#

it pays for itself over time

#

my parents' house is almost twice the size of the house we grew up in, & because it has decent insulation & other stuff, both the heating & A/C are cheaper in it

#

been doing a cleanout, got rid of about 200kg of wood last week

#

🀣

#

my sister has 5

#

one was kinda unexpected, neighbors broke up & both left

#

offered him up

#

& now he's 100% a housecat

#

before he had to have a "i have a home, please don't feed me" tag because he was getting a lil chunky visiting neighbors

#

lol nope. almost nobody has a basement around here

#

just digging in the "dirt" here can cost as much as building the house

#

oh yea midwest it's mandatory

#

yup

#

it's also super easy to dig in that dirt

#

can do it with your bare hands down to like 3m

#

🀣

#

only in the summer

#

got none of that here

#

just the heat

#

10:30pm here & 20C

#

🀣

#

had to learn both

#

eh, we like big numbers

#

what's annoying is that american cooking mostly uses volume & not mass

#

i like the base 12 aspect of it for multiplying & dividing

#

🀣

#

i mean, being able to count to 60 on one hand is useful

#

yup 🀣

#

i think that's why it's useful to know both

#

decimal?

#

yup

#

plus with 12 you can do 3x4 containers

#

yup

#

we don't vaccinate chickens, we wash the eggs, which removes protection

#

so refrigeration preserves them

#

i honestly can't wait to have animal-less meat be a regular thing

#

there's really no taking the death out of animal farming

#

don't you love the "eat starch because you can't eat meat, eat less starch because your cholesterol's going up"

#

there's plenty of unprocessed bread in the US

#

oh in the mass produced stuff sure

#

i've been reducing that myself

#

we've got lots of fun local people making custom stuff

#

sugar & salt are only good when they help along the food's normal flavors, & not a flavor themselves

#

same with spicy

#

oh some of them are ok

#

well, taste ok

#

still awful for you 🀣

#

depends on the cheese really

#

i haven't had a big mac in probably 10 years

#

yea, i used to do that to myself to remind me why i don't do it

#

i had to go thru that too, i know the struggle

#

did a hard reset on my gut

#

i went vegan for a bit as part of diagnosing some problems, eventually went back, but i've definitely given up the worst stuff

#

i don't do beef at all anymore, ham a little bit, & then mostly chicken & fish for protein

#

i bet europeans would be offended that i use peanuts & peanut butter as an animal protein substitute

charred relic
#

And best of all... peanuts aren't even nuts! How nutty is that?!

languid gulch
#

i heard that it got a bad reputation in europe because people were trying to use it as a straight butter substitute, which is not why it's called that

charred relic
#

i do medium when i go out unless i know they'll get it right, then i do medium rare lol

#

The trick to burgers, and here you have to go to a butcher to get it... get something fatty... fattier than 80/20

languid gulch

we also don't have BSE here, so cows are pretty safe to eat

languid gulch
#

yea costco only works here where things are way more spread out, people can buy & transport things in bulk

#

ok got a dumb american question

#

when you write 500 meters, would you say 500 meters or half a kilometer

charred relic
#

If I buy another car anytimg soon it'll be old... 60's or 70's... maybe an 80 Z28

#

think it was 80 that had the air induction flaps that opened when the secondarys on the carb started sucking wind heh

languid gulch
charred relic

I don't mind emissions

#

the entire engine will be either new or rebuilt by yours truly heh

#

it'll be old specs, no modern BS

languid gulch
#

right but i didn't know if one or the other was used more or "proper". i suspect i'd get weird looks if i said "a quarter kilometer"

charred relic
#

May or may not squeeze a few extra HP out of it...

#

...should just go deep and throw a 1/2" cam in it

#

with dual 4-barrel intake heh

languid gulch
charred relic
#

I know where I can get a motor that'll be great and not overpriced to just drop in if i wanted

#

My problem now is tools, mine are in disarray, some got lost in the last move

languid gulch
#

they're usually ok, it's the wiring in the walls that tend to be more concerning

charred relic
#

All my good tools now are for dealing with household type stuff and electronics

#

yeah best to flip the breaker before you go mucking around

languid gulch
#

oh 100%

charred relic
#

and double check it just in case

#

which you can do at a socket, or if you're me the panel lol

languid gulch
#

voltage tester is a nice tool to have

charred relic
#

m,ost of it routed where you expect

#

like if you see an outlet it likely just drops right down from the attic

#

right between those two studs...

languid gulch
#

it would be interested to see someone reinvent some kind of global standardized socket, just to see what they'd come up with

charred relic
#

our sockets could stand to be more secure... and have a system that doesn't connecting anything else until groun is connected

#

for grounded stuff

languid gulch
#

i do like that the ground has to be connected first before the other 2 prongs go in

#

the UK one really didn't have to be the size of someone's fucking fist tho

#

oh yea the fuse inside it is dumb

charred relic
#

seems like most things i plug in that are two prong are too tight or too loose

#

3 prong is a bit better but still; have same prob

#

i just love exposed live lines

my buddies dad made a fortune in stocks with them way back

Those are one of the big reasons why WLAN APs like to have different names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, because those Atheros drivers don't know how to properly autoselect between the two when shown as same.

glossy glacier
#

my new MB has a Qualcomm wireless-chip too

#

@twin dew qualcomm better or worse than mediatek? your opinion to intel chips?

twin dew
#

Intel WLAN chips were the gold standard.
But the new BE-series doesn't work on many AMD systems, prevents the system from booting completely when plugged in.

#

And I would probably rank MediaTek above the Qualcomm PC WLAN chips.

glossy glacier
twin dew
#

Because they do work in older AMD systems, in Pi:s etc.
Intel just says that as long as the cards work in OEM systems where they come as stock, everything is fine.

glossy glacier
#

Intelℒ️, gotcha

twin dew
#

AX200 series Intels throw constant driver errors in new AMD systems if you have new enough drivers.

Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6E AX210 160MHz : The network adapter has returned an invalid value to the driver.

#

Basically seems that AMD implements some PCIe (power saving?) feature that Intel doesn't handle right.
On AX210, it causes those driver errors once a minute or so when the card isn't in active use.

And on BE-series the computer cannot boot at all.

glossy glacier
#

huh, so a bit from both sides actually?

twin dew
#

And their support is saying that they will not even investigate, as they just say that they only deal with OEMs directly for those cards or chips.
And it is OEMs problem to make them work in any specific system.

#

Seems Intel finally fixed that driver issue at least.

im not wondering im just confused by what your trying to say

#

if your using your laptop on a flat hard surface usually no

however if you are but want better thermals or just want to try to get a quieter experience by increasing the room for airflow then sure spend the extra money on a stand however there is no NEED unless your having serious thermal issues

worst performance 40 degrees hotter and 60W more power draw than before

#

this feels like they just took the asus strat of maxing out every slider and then just pulled them all back a smidge and called it a day

#

its awful

twin dew
#

As I said, the MB was undervolting the CPU.

pure karma
#

same voltage as before

#

so no it wasent

twin dew
#

Then how is the CPU hotter?

#

Because that heat is result of voltage.

pure karma
#

it was just simply fine tuned better

pure karma
twin dew
#

Then why do you try to say it isn't undervolting being removed?

pure karma
#

Went from 220W to 280W so id say thats probably

twin dew
#

Because you don't get more power usage at same performance unless voltage went up.

#

And the whole point why Intel had to finally put in some rules was how much the various MB makers undervolted via stupid way.

#

Setting AC Loadline way below DC loadline.

pure karma
#

whatever let me kill edge first so i can actually set up this stupid things fully

twin dew
#

Which lowers the actual voltage fed to the CPU in relation to amperage used.
Higher amperage, higher undervolting as percentage.

pure karma
#

idk but going from about 50-65C to 80C+ under load with no voltage change and if anything a more aggressive fan curve is not a safe default

#

Worst part is its not even the intel defaults either

#

atleast not fully anyway cause power and all that is still set to unlimited

twin dew
#

If you just look at the max, you are not looking the right thing.

#

The MAX voltage didn't change.
But the voltage used at specific performance did.

pure karma
#

also can i delete the partition rufus made

twin dew

Rufus made a partition?

pure karma
#

yes

twin dew
#

There should be EFI partition, reserved partition, main partition, and then recovery partition.

#

All from Windows, not RUFUS.

pure karma
twin dew
#

Ah, on the stick?

#

Yes, if the stick format isn't right, there is that kind of bypass.

pure karma
#

so it isent important?

#

just wanted to make sure since iv nerver seen that before

twin dew
#

Not after installing, and neither is that installer partition on the stick.

#

Both are just on the USB stick.

glossy glacier
#

thats the boot partition, isn't it?
do not delete it then, just remove the drive letter

pure karma
#

i removed the drive and its gone so yea

#

Just couldn’t see it when i checked drive manager because it was too small

twin dew
#

UEFI cannot be trusted to be able to boot anything other than FAT (not exFAT), and the current Windows installer is too large to fit into FAT32 partitions 4GB limit.

#

So there is small bootloader FAT partition on the stick to contain the bootloader for the installer, that then boots the full installer from the NTFS or exFAT partition.

10 days it seems

ok il leave it just in case

#

realistically 1TB is plenty of free space for windows lol

#

Thats cool tho

#

is that new or something?

glossy glacier
#

yeah, if you don't delete the old partitions and just reuse the existing the windows installer just moves the old files into a windows.old folder

pure karma

pure karma

nope its 1 install per key and then its dead

twin dew
#

Not been the case in my experience.

#

Done lot of reinstalls to systems and if it had license before, it got the same activation after, when done in that Trial mode.

#

Windows OEM licenses are per computer and not transferable, but as long as MB stays the same, and not too many changes to other HW, it will just reactivate.

Thinking again of that vid of photons as (not) particles...
If they are waves - would they be quantized? Not really.
Amount of photons emitted is limited. You can compute it. There's power of laser and it's wavelength.
So it is just a particle that behaves like a wave? Like a courier that has a map and traverses it in tandem with a hoard of others just like him?

jagged snow
#

Moreso something that can be represented as both a particle and a wave, or a waveform of particles

wanton orchid
#

keep in mind quantic stuff is mostly about calculation models, their limited applicable conditions and finding holes / completing them in the whole model every time
quantization is a real behavior evaluated for some expected conditions and calculations
it's a way of interpreting real things going on

the purely quantic way of thinking people are more and more getting on-board on is a long obsolete bullshit way of thinking which have came out as a form of occultism off of early scientific experiment results

it fell appart as soon as we split appart "atoms"
atom mean "can't be split"
it's still used in the exact meaning in programming and information processing btw

#

anybody talking to you about quantic stuff like if it was piece of a program in a strictly defined programming language
are doing the opposite of science

#

which is to observe first then deduce things but experimenting further
not to spread limiting extrapolation of anything

Nvidia 5090 (mobile), half the CUDA cores to desktop 5090, half the VRAM bus width, 95W TDP.
And still that mobile isn't officially part of the name...

#

Using same die as desktop 5080, but tiny bit less CUDA cores, but with 24GB of VRAM on 256bit bus, so probably using non-power-of-two VRAM dies?

pure karma

Same price 1/2 of the product

Nice

twin dew

Less, when the power budged is almost one sixth.

95W vs 575W.

Basically 5080 with 95W TDP instead of 360W.

can't wait for someone to forget to power limit it

Yeah, 8 VRAM dies, so 3GB/24Gb dies for that 24GB VRAM.
Instead of 2GB/16Gb dies on 5080.

Alternate offering B-stock GeForce RTX 5090 officially with missing ROPs One of the kind offer.Β What recall? languid gulch

is it possible that the GPUs with missing ROPs were supposed to be mobile versions?

#

it feels more like just a mistake, but maybe?

feral drift

The only similarity I can see is that 5090 Mobile has the same ROP as the expected 5080 Desktop.. And the 5080 Mobile has the same the expected 5070 TI Desktop..

twin dew

Because the current Laptop versions are each one step lower in actual spec.

languid gulch

LOL just imagine if the missing ROP gpus were supposed to be the mobile versions, but then they decided to change it up to what's coming out now 🀣

feral drift

Who knows then if the Laptops are also missing ROPs

twin dew
#

5090 Mobile doesn't exist.
5090 Mobile is actually 5080 Mobile.
And so on.

#

5090 Mobile is using tiny bit harvested 5080 die.

I don't know exactly what the ROPs does, just the more number the better it is :)

#

i did hear rumours they uncancelled the big chiplet one

twin dew
#

And again ignoring that it seems that AMD had to go crash redesign even for 9070 die.

willow pike
#

but that'll be December at best if they do

#

and we're very deep in the twitter tea leaf bullshit

willow pike
twin dew
#

Yeah, AFAIK there was supposed to be two tiers of chiplet based, and just lowest tier as monolithic.
And something went wrong pretty late and the highest end was completely cancelled (Navi 41?)
And the mid-tier (Navi 42?) had crash redesign to be monolithic (Navi 48)
And lowest tier Navi 44 is coming out later as originally planned.

#

As in wouldn't have been economical enough to produce, most likely by those interposer tech things.

willow pike
#

i heard they redirected capacity to MI350/MI400 because it earns all the money and they figured blackwell wouldn't be lackwell

#

but now with the 5090 having no progress other than die go bigger, and AI bubble beginning to contract, it does make sense to get back into big gaming, just real questionable for them to do it this generation given how long the lead time on anything is

twin dew
#

More likely some other interposer tech was delayed or like.
The specific interposer tech used by AMD and Nvidia for their AI accelerators has been known to be completely sold out for years and in future too for some time more.

#

Trying to find if 7000-series and MIs use same interposer tech or not...

#

RDNA3 had small fanout interposer chips.
MI300 has full size active silicon interposer using TSMC CoWoS-S tech.

willow pike
#

RDNA3 uses info_rdl, extremely short throw copper interconnect, no silicon interposer

#

MI uses interposers and SoIC (3D stacking like X3D cache)

twin dew
#

IIRC the original rumors were that RDNA4 would use another type of CoWoS tech, not that -S variant.

#

Possibly the same CoWoS-R (organic interposer) as MI300 was originally to use instead of more expensive -S (silicon interposer).

#

Which AFAIK showed major issues with temperature cycling late in development from the too different thermal expansion coefficients between the interposer and silicon chips on top.

#

That InFO-RDL is close to that CoWoS-R, or possibly basically same.

glossy glacier
#

If the 9070 cards are based on a last minute design, makes one wonder how good the intended chip would have performed

twin dew
#

Just the exact die implementation if that redesign is actually the case.

#

And without it, the die names don't really match to previous AMD naming, keeping most elements but the last number.

#

And that Navi 44 as smallest still matches the long time naming.

Because there's tons of N5/N4 capacity, that's public info. If gamers aren't getting it, it's because they're not deemed a lucrative market.

#

HUB put it nicely recently and made an interesting comparison to regional game pricing. Because it's all digital with unlimited supply, publishers can tailor pricing as precisely as they want to each market. But the moment you're talking about physical goods with finite supply and logistics costs, it becomes a question of what market pays the most.
