@twin dew any advice for intel memory stability?

my discord did hide some malware in its startup not too long ago

every device dependent on software is abunch of spyware/malware and whatever else you can come up with to call it

charred relic

Think I should just go ahead and order a 2nd one...

charred relic
#

aka 1/4 inch

#

now it smells illogical ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I refer to a lot of project stuff by metric because that's how it's listed/sold or specified... like I use a lot of 5mm LED's

#

and some 3mm...

#

the bezels for the leds are usually expressed in metric as well

#

i prefer metric but after a lifetime of not using it... h ard to adjust

#

like i still have to think about celcius to know if that's hot or cold

#

like if somebody says "it's such and such C outside.."

#

lol

#

now im used to soldering tems in C

#

I range from 340-370 depending

#

pounds... might as well just used stones

#

hmmm some lady completely naked at DFW airport

#

how come this shit never happens where i am...

#

not that i care about her being naked outside of content heh

#

And acting crazy... which kinda goes without saying

#

I don't think I'd enjoy long distance rail

#

So... yeah here an Amtrak would take around 3 nights (64 hours) coast to coast

#

and without stopovers.. ugh

#

I guess if you have a decent enough room it's not so bad

#

I've seen some nice rooms... and some pretty meh ones

#

That region is a bit... different too

#

like travel from country to country there is like state to state here

#

rail makes a lot of sense to connect them for sure

#

If I were going to go vactioning/traveling in Europe I'd want to ladn my feed in some country then go on a train tour through a bunch more to see the sights

#

just spend a day in each or whatever, that could be fun

#

or day/night in each probably

#

But my first choice overseas would be Japan

#

I just love the cities, the historical monuments, culture

#

would love to see it in person

#

Also the people there seem nice

#

heh for some reason the country reminded me of that sopranos scene

#

"It's a bad connection, so I'm gonna talk fast! The guy you're looking for is an ex-commando! He killed sixteen Chechen rebels single-handed! Yeah. Nice, huh? He was with the Interior Ministry. Guy's some kind of Russian green beret. This guy can not come back to tell this story. You understand?"

#

[turning to Christopher] You're not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. The guy was an interior decorator.

#

fuckin pauly... lol

#

heh just saw a video of some dude run up on an old man in his car gun out, old man snatched and and started blat tat tatting at him

#

gotta watch out for those old heads... bros vietnam era shit kicked in on you...

Some of those reflexive actions never go away, my dad is like that

Fun fact John Dunsworth aka Jim Jahey from TPB was one of the Divine Predecessor's voices. Also he played a great drunk.

languid gulch
#

kinda the hint that it shouldn't be done, at least with an original crew/plot in some way, was when Enterprise did it with Riker in the last 2 episodes, where they tried to put Frakes in the same place, but clearly 9 years older than the Pegasus episode

it's not the country, it's the people involved. The Office was a UK import & did great

charred relic

Some things are better left alone

languid gulch
#

TNG did it well. same universe, with an occasional handoff from the originals to show approval

if they tried to do something like a firefly or farscape resurrection, i'd want it to be parallel stories, or ahead/back in time relative to the original series

The British pet massacre was an event in 1939 in which an estimated 400,000 cats and dogs, a quarter of England's pet population, were euthanized due to an aside in a pamphlet noting it as an option for people unable to take their pets with them when evacuating. The incident was recognized as unnecessary almost immediately after it occurred, ste...

I find it funny that people bring up "agree to disagree" in matters of objectively provable fact.
For me, that concept only applies to matters of personal preference and taste

languid gulch
#

yup

#

also the "see? we're both right!" when one is objectively wrong

twin dew
#

Multiple times.

#

Also, if these are the options MSI provides, then they are complete shit.
Because Intel provided several profiles, and for 14900K, there should be "Intel Default Settings (Extreme)" with 253W, 253W, 400A, with all the protections still on and voltage limit in place.

#

If MSI doesn't provide that, that is on them.

#

Which is the Intel recommended one for 14900K, if the MB VRM can handle it.

#

The problems were: MB makers undervolting the CPUs and disabling protections.
Intel fucked up several different things in microcode and allowed the CPU to ask for dangerous levels of VCore.

#

But not using that Intel Defaults usually also disables that new max VCore limiter, and MSI doesn't expose it to be manually used either.

#

Asus and Gigabyte did even before the issues were known, MSI and AsRock don't and have both stated they have no plans to expose it either.

languid gulch
#

at least when AMD occasionally has a fried CPU, it's not by design

tribal kraken
#

Yeah first thing would be to see its actually memory problem, or the 14900K CPU can be bad already. Random crashes was the symptoms with my 13900K. Like discord could crash idle on desktop. But then at the same time could play PUBG 2 hours straight no problem. Trying troubleshoot it by installing Windows resulted in bluescreens led me to broken hardware. Memory testers and swapped 12900K back ruled out the problem to CPU for me

twin dew
#

7200MT/s RAM, so very likely unstable if on XMP

#

As Intel doesn't bin for IMC quality.

#

And the official spec is just 4400MT/s max on 4-slot MB.

tribal kraken
#

Yeah sure, then just try without XMP or more RAM voltage, if its 1.35V XMP kit, try 1.4 or even 1.43V

twin dew
#

That affects the RAM, not the IMC.

#

Point was that there is very high chance the CPU cannot do that RAM speed stable.

#

That RAM cannot do what the manufacturer says is uncommon.
But that CPU or MB cannot keep up with high-speed RAM is common.

glossy glacier
#

Does Intel have a auto gear down too? Like AMD when RAM goes above 6000MT/s?

twin dew
#

AFAIK no, default is 1:2 on DDR5, and you can select 1:4.

#

1:1 isn't an option.

glossy glacier
twin dew
#

No idea.

#

Just what they are called.
On DDR4 there is 1:1 IIRC.

glossy glacier

Hm kay

languid gulch

#

i'd be nicer about it, but they obviously knew about multiple critical problems months in advance, and did the gaslighting, lying, deflecting, & coverup, so i have 0 reason to be nice about it. they've not even issued any apologies to the companies they tried to blame for their problems, or the customers they blamed for "doing it wrong"

oh 100%

i can tell i'd be a terrible big business owner because i'd suspend selling a company's products until they issue a public apology & retracted blaming me for their screwups

My issue is when people do the opposite and use subjectivity in objective topics

Trying to bring objectivity into subject topics is a fair thing to do if it helps you find a position

Are those for the right network type?

night girder

Domain.

twin dew

And you are actually in Domain type network then?

I don't even have idea how to get the connection to be considered Domain network.

Almost certainly needs both Domain Controller, and additional setup in its config.

Controls what is allowed in and out by default.
Public whenever you don't want to use Windows File Sharing basically.

night girder

I wanted to play palworld. But I read something interesting about recent EULA changes.

#

And then when I dig deeper I found this piece of information.

twin dew
# night girder That was it. Blocked all private outgoing. Discord stopped working. Added discor...

Basically you can have three rule-sets, and which one is used depends on what you set the specific direct Network to, detected by default gateway MAC and IP IIRC.
Where:
Domain is meant for enterprise networks with Domain Controllers.
Public is meant for networks where you don't want to give others access to your computers resources like file shares etc.
Private is meant for home networks behind NAT-routers and like where you do want devices to have file sharing etc. working between them.

night girder
#

Also annoying, if something is incoming and blocked. You get a messge from W11. "Do you want to allow this?".

#

If something is outgoing (and blocked) no message from W11.

#

Also, not logging ๐Ÿ˜ฆ (that works out of the box atm)

#

Because of the defaults.

twin dew
#

There is toggle on per rule level for that.
But basically that is meant to be easy solution for normal user at defaults (control for incoming, all outgoing allowed).
But allow full control with granular rules if needed, but not as something user friendly.

#

There are alternative UIs to that that give what you want in easy to use way.

night girder
#

Just wanted to test out if I can block palworld telemetry is all.

#

Breaking this down in layman's terms this new EULA gives them the right to monitor and collect your data on their servers, your computer, and your device. Is that data your browsing history? Bank statements? Personal photos? Login credentials to your email or messaging sites? Contacts? That we don't know and that should scare you.

Windows firewall isn't meant for that.

Which is not the case as we discussed in detail.

twin dew
night girder

Tested it. Didn't work. Created a block all rule. Didn't see any options to notify on block for outgoing.

twin dew
#

Ok, wasn't option.
Would need one of those third party GUIs to Windows Firewall.

night girder
#

I wonder if game will work with telemtry blocked.

#

Also, is this allowed in EU? Forced telemetry?

wanton orchid

yes but how the telemetry is agreed and performed and for what kind of data is restricted

night girder
#

Is this legal?

#

Privacy Policy is just a link to their website. Not directly to Privacy Policy. And their EULA, says accorance "privacy policy" which leads to generic website with no privacy policy to be found.

#

While they do have a privacy policy ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ But just cba to link directly to it?

#

While playing our game, we automatically collect certain information for a variety of purposes, primarily, to provide the service and to improve the quality of our games. These includes:

  • Solve technical problem and improve quality of the game;
  • Preventing inappropriate gameplay that could harm other players;
  • Provide customer support by collecting and answering inquiries;
  • Provide information on events & surveys and provide opportunities to participate, to provide advertisement and for other marketing and promotion purposes;
  • Tracking usage patterns and analyzing trends of players, calculating statistics on the game;
#

That's all the privacy policy contains. Jack shit.

#

I don't trust PocketPair tbh. They are so freaking vague about almost anything.

#

They have the balls to rip off Pokemon from Nintendo. So already ethical questionable company.

wanton orchid
# night girder Is this legal?

"regarding use of the services" is legal in EU, it can basically record every mouse movements and action and keys performed through or on the software (but not external to the software (service) by that line)

night girder

Also funny:

The 5.4 Monitoring rule is generic and says for more details go here. Which is another generic AF page.

night girder
wanton orchid

"trends of players" is freaking vague

"calculating statistics on the game" is not a legal wording nor an English formal one

mental oriole

pure karma
#

how hard out of 10 would it be to try to manually stablelise ram

glossy glacier
#

10 if you don't know how ram and timings work
5-ish if you do
my guess

#

0 easy, 10 hard

pure karma
#

so 10 ok great

night girder
#

But then it's not really you that is stablelizing the RAM. But Baldur hehe

jagged snow
#

Still a solid 8 because he can't listen to directions

pure karma
#

everytime i rope baldur into something it goes from fairly easy common sense to impossible words i dont understand

#

so the oposite

twin dew
#

Well, stabilizing is often easy.
Make everything super slow and put in more voltage (to safe limits).
But the performance will be crap.

pure karma
#

i intend on doing the oposite

#

lowering voltage keeping speed

#

because i noticed that my ram when XMP is enabled is like 0.15V above spec

twin dew
#

Because that is what the RAM is specced at for the speed it is sold at?

jagged snow
#

If it's sold with that xmp profile the chance is pretty slim it can't handle the voltage in the profile

twin dew
#

One part of that XMP profile is that VDIMM.

pure karma
#

its either cpu cant handle 6400MHZ or ram is unstable at anything above 4800MHZ and even then its not fully stable at 4800 just enough to not be a concearn

twin dew
#

And that is the CPU IMC most likely.

#

Like said before, 13th and 14th gen Intels for example have stock max memory clock of 4400MT/s, anything over isn't guaranteed to work on any specific CPU unit, when using 4-slot MB with 2 slots used.

pure karma
#

but specs say 5600MT/s unless they changed them

twin dew
#

Which Intel conviently leaves out from the marketing.

#

And also moved the document with the actual limits for 13th and 14th gen behind login-wall about 6 months ago.

#

The ARK will say "Up to 5600MT/s".

#

For 14th gen.
For 13th gen the max advertized (on 2-slot MB) was less, 5200MT/s?

pure karma
#

so essentially i need to go even bellow non XMP spec to be at the safe max

twin dew
pure karma
#

XMP OFF IS 4800

#

this entire thing is so stupid

twin dew
#

That XMP off is set by the MB.
And in this case the MB maker isn't following Intel spec.

jagged snow
#

That's great, file explorer can't even fit menus on the screen now

twin dew
#

Also, if you damaged your CPU earlier with excess voltage, all bets are off now.

#

Which you IIRC did.

pure karma
#

the default spec for DDR5 is 4800

twin dew
#

There is no default speed.

#

JEDEC has DDR5 specs for 3600-5600MT/s at least now.

#

When 13th gen was released, 5200MT/s was highest, so that is the spec speed for those 2-slot MBs.
And when 14th gen was released, 5600MT/s had been added so Intel specced to that on 2-slot MBs, even when there is no difference in the IMCs actual capabilities.
But the 4-slot MB spec stayed at 4400MT/s, as that is the silicon limit at default voltages on the crappiest silicon lottery dies.

pure karma
#

14Gen released when ddr5 was already over 8000

twin dew
#

JEDEC vs. overclocking.

pure karma
#

anyway here is the specs for my ram since il probably need it and your probably going to ask for it

twin dew
#

Only JEDEC speeds are specced at the default VDIMM (1.1V for DDR5).

pure karma
#

im at over 1.45V

twin dew
pure karma
#

il have to check exact numbers but i know im over

#

then what even is the point of having these crazy ram speeds anyway

twin dew
#

And yes, some MB makers add 0.05V to the XMP set VDIMM automatically.

twin dew
pure karma
#

ik that because i noticed it and dident think much of it because this kit was advertised at 1.45V originally and not 1.40 but yes i know

twin dew
pure karma
#

but its at much more than that at times but like i said i dont have the numbers and cant check so im not going to give you guesses out my ass

#

il check in 3 hours when i can actually have the bios open and compare specs to reality

twin dew
#

CPU-Z and HWInfo can both show the SPD contents.

pure karma
#

SPD contents?

twin dew
#

What the RAM manufacturer set a chip on the DIMM to say its capabilities are.
Contains those SPD and XMP profiles.

pure karma
#

you mean read what its doing? If so yea ik hwinfo can

twin dew
#

So would show what the RAM is set to request when XMP is on. 1.40V or 1.45V.

twin dew
pure karma
twin dew
#

HWinfo full mode, memory, long list of things from SPD for each DIMM

#

Or CPU-Z SPD tab.

night girder

One hour later and they still on the basics. hehe

And that's why I cba with OC my RAM.

feral drift

And I didn't talk about stabilizing max RAM OC or tightened timings.
That takes ages.

I was talking about nerfing everything and still using XMP OC level voltages to stabilize RAM.

Basically auto or worse performance with RAM OC voltages.

This screen:

pure karma

I have nerver seen that screen in my life

twin dew

Then I have no idea what you have got installed, because it certainly isn't HWiNFO.

pure karma
#

ohhh wait i know nervermind

#

i have it up on my laptop so i can figure out what i need ahead of time

#

do i just need everything

#

like what am i looking for

#

like under voltage there is VDD VDDQ and VPP

twin dew
#

And then there should be section about XMP, with voltages again.

pure karma
#

ok then nervermind i cant check since these dont have a XMP spec

twin dew
pure karma
#

IM trying to figure out what im even looking for that way i know when you fling 40 things at me later

#

nervermind il be back in an hour

twin dew
#

But mainly the point was that that screen shows the actual programmed "spec" for the RAM.
Both SPD (at stock voltage) and XMP

#

But that is still just the spec for the DIMM.
And what can be actually done is the lowest common denominator from DIMM, MB and CPU IMC.

#

Where each affect the two others.

pure karma
#

i have to find the specs for this ram so i can figure out what im looking for first since you dont know what the entry is called

#

1.1V ok so then...

twin dew
#

Those are the SPD voltage entries.
So JEDEC spec, so will always be 1.1V for DDR5.

#

And correspond probably to that 4800MT/s, shown as 2400MHz.

pure karma
#

this is likely what i need to find once im home then?

#

TO BE CLEAR THIS ISENT THOSE RAM STICKS these are different

#

im just trying to figure out where to look

twin dew
#

And I told you to look for entries with 1.4V or 1.45V in the value?

#

Somewhere way down.

pure karma
#

for the other ones yea but these are 1.1

twin dew
#

You have 4 sticks of RAM in that machine?
Then the max official speed is 3600MT/s.

pure karma
pure karma
#

i said i dont have acess to my pc for another like 40 minutes

#

i specified they are diffrent as im on a test rig

#

i gave you the new spec

#

i specified im trying to find out where to look ahead of time so i can give you the values right away when i get home

#

and then later all im gona hear is "oh yea but you dident lissen or follow the instructions" well yea no shit

#

since clearly thats too hard to understand im not gonna continue until im home but dont go complaining after because i dont know where to look

twin dew
pure karma
#

even if i do if there not the right values im not going to find them

#

if this is anything to go by there are 4 diffrent voltages

twin dew
#

Those three for SPD side, then one per XMP/EXPO profile, with max of 2 XMP, 2 EXPO.

pure karma
#

ok theres this (again)

twin dew
#

And again, those are the JEDEC spec SPD voltages.

pure karma
#

and then theres the XMP specifications that do indeed say 1.4V

twin dew
#

So if the MB is setting VDIMM to 1.45V, it is one of those that add 0.05V to whatever XMP asks for, which is pretty common.

#

But none of that matters if the computer isn't stable with XMP enabled.

pure karma
#

its stable but not enough like i have mentioned plenty of itmes in the past you can forget anything with tight failrates like VR it will live for at most 20 seconds and crash for either unknown reasson or ram depending on how competent the crash reporter is

#

and thats generally less bad or not the case at all at 4800

twin dew
#

RAM is either stable or it isn't.
Computer is either stable or it isn't.
If you get any crashes, it isn't stable.

pure karma
#

ok well how do i fix it then

#

we spent 4 hours going around a roundabout

twin dew
#

First is that you reset your BIOS to defaults.
And don't change anything for CPU or RAM, and see if you still crash or not on all-auto.

pure karma
#

it is reset i updated it

#

hence why my integrated graphics are back on causing chaos

twin dew
#

Then not touching that with 100 meter pole anymore.
As I cannot know if it is your Windows, your CPU, your RAM, your GPU, something else, or combination of above being fucked.

pure karma
#

im going to do it my way

night girder
#

Whaaaaaat?

#

Isnt that a Frank Sinatra song?

#

โ€œI did it my wayโ€

pure karma
#

yes it is, and it sucks snuttdad

pure karma
#

i was right for once

#

2 issues solved

#

only 400 more to go

#

obs was indeed throwing a hissy fit and crashing everything with it because of my integrated graphics

#

so that's the iGpu dealth with and OBS fixed

verbal raft
#

baldurs worst take yet : )

twin dew
#

Or you have missed all the even worse ones?
As even that is pretty old one.

#

Ok, newer than I remembered, only from start of february of this year.

twin dew
#

There are no limits on how dumb lines I can write at times.

night girder
night girder
dire igloo
pure karma
#

yes

#

it just did twice

dire igloo
pure karma
#

dunno how well its going to go for the whole ram problem but i fixed 2/4

night girder
#

There should be a Baldur garantuee/policy. That if you do too much on your own (which is fine) and you don't listen Baldur (which is fine) you lose the tech support from Baldur hehe

#

I wasn't really following the whole conversation (was on the road) but one moment I read: "How do I optimize RAM (asking for advice?) and then a few hours later, I open my phone and read "I do it my way" ๐Ÿคฃ

night girder
#

Because that's just delaying the problem I think ๐Ÿ˜’

pure karma
#

did nothing for 4 hours and then refused to help so im on my own

#

im battleing bad hardware and irelevant advice

night girder
#

Ok, to be clear, because I am know for using the wrong words.

Bad hardware = broken hardware.

pure karma
#

defective then

#

50/50 working not working

twin dew
#

Broken by your bad OC attempts.

pure karma
#

ahh yes broken ethernet controler is my fault

#

and the bent usb c from bad case design

#

and the million other physical defects

#

wrong standoff threading on the GPU mount with no alternatives provided

night girder
#

Is this a mix of buying bad hardware and being extremely unlucky and made some mistakes during overclocking?

pure karma
#

i havent overclocked anything

#

not manually anyway

night girder
#

with 0 overclocking?

pure karma
#

all just out of the box specs or presets

twin dew
#

Right now?
You AFAIK have OCd that stuff before.

night girder
#

But is the hardware fresh? hehe

mental oriole
#

I would just have returned the thing.

twin dew
#

Using way too high voltages.

night girder
#

I can overlock hardware, fuck it up, then put it to default, doesn't mean jack.

pure karma
#

GPu is on its OC preset so YES ig so

#

CPU is on speed optimiser so i guess so yea

night girder
twin dew
pure karma
#

it is

night girder
pure karma
#

gigabytes default bios isent intel defaults

mental oriole
twin dew
night girder
mental oriole
#

I let the cpu run it's defaults.

twin dew
#

MB makers have over the years made tons of stupid defaults or non-working auto-OC systems.

night girder
#

Tell me about it.

twin dew
#

Anything with "Optimizer" in its name is some stupid auto-OC thing.

pure karma
#

then dont suggest using it ๐Ÿ˜‚

twin dew
#

I expected the MB to have sane defaults.

pure karma
#

default is speed optimised with everything on auto

#

not intel defaults with everything else on auto

night girder
#

don't trust the defaults is all I am saying from experience.

#

I put my MB to "default" few times. And I found a lot of values not reverted back to "default".

#

Then I put it all to auto manually. (took me some time).

#

Then I pressed "default" and it all stayed on auto. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

So no clue what happened in the case I just described. But one moment default wasn't setting all to auto. When I set all to auto and revert default, it all stayed on auto ๐Ÿคจ

pure karma
twin dew
night girder
#

Baldur saw the screenshots back in the day ๐Ÿ˜›

pure karma
#

this cpu could do 1V if it actually cared to try

night girder
#

What is stock voltage?

pure karma
#

1.2V i think

twin dew
#

Stock today is up to 1.55V.

pure karma
#

atleast thats what the bios says its setting but its not

twin dew
#

Depending the exact load profile.

twin dew
night girder
#

So between 1.2V and 1.55V hehe

twin dew
#

But VID table that goes from below 1V when idle to 1.55V max when at max one-core-turbo.

#

Where the actual max depends on the exact CPU unit.

#

So no wonder you have stability issues...

pure karma
#

mine is 1.4V no matter what

mental oriole
twin dew
night girder
twin dew
#

If it is, your MB BIOS settings are even more fucked up.

pure karma
#

every monitoring tool in existance

night girder
#

But if everything works, it's probably fine. Although it could lead to issues down the road.

mental oriole
#

The pc is like 8 years old and I never had an issue with. I also reset the bios a few months back, and it's whatever defaults.

#

I reset bios because it got stuck in boot loop because I changed a setting ๐Ÿ˜€

night girder
#

that's my understanding of it, you can overclock or underclock, everything works fine for months, but there is possibility you are actually slowly killing hardware.

pure karma
#

its not exactly rocket science to look at a reading

twin dew
twin dew
night girder
twin dew
#

So not static, just hadn't hit over 1.368V during that run in long enough to get registered in this case.

#

And again, if you are on MB maker settings and not Intel Defaults, then the MB is probably undervolting.

pure karma
#

no shot its undervolting

night girder
#

Does intel provide defaults somewhere? (manual?)

pure karma
#

its saying 1.2V is the bios and 1.4V in the OS

twin dew
#

Since summer.

night girder
#

AMD doesn't do that?

twin dew
#

AMD at least tries to force MB makers to actually follow the defaults.

pure karma
#

does presentmon track Vcore?

twin dew
#

For long time.

twin dew
night girder
twin dew
#

And that MB maker undervolting is/was done by setting AC loadline resistance wrong.

night girder
#

And I did nothing in BIOS when my issues started. Was clean install. All I did was play games the moment it worked ๐Ÿคฃ

mental oriole
#

xD

night girder
#

But then PC started to shutdown while gaming and well, you know the rest.

twin dew
pure karma
#

now its progressed to layred frames so difrent parts of the screen sometimes show different frames depending on where the mouse is

twin dew
#

But MagicZ, if your computer is unstable, THEN SET THAT INTEL DEFAULTS!

night girder
pure karma
#

because its a pain

#

and this bios dosent have the default as a selectable option

twin dew
pure karma
#

and there isent a new one

night girder
#

everything to auto?

twin dew
#

What motherboard?

night girder
#

Can't you flash a motherboard with default or something? So load external defaults from a stick?

#

That would have been cool ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

pure karma
#

yea but its the motherboard defaults not cpu defaults

night girder
#

Probably a security hazzard hehe

pure karma
#

so the same broken garbage

twin dew
#

What motherboard?
Because I haven't heard of SINGLE MB that hasn't got the updates to fix the shit.

mental oriole
pure karma
#

this is the update just you have to set the default yourself

#

only thing they did is ad a disable option to multicore enhancement

#

then you have to go through and change everything yourself

twin dew
#

So WHAT MB

#

GIGABYTE Z790 UD AC

pure karma
#

yea that

#

idk why i cant see system info

twin dew
#

Where BIOS version F11 added Intel Default Settings option.

night girder
#

Introduce the "Intel Default Settings" and enabled as default, user needs to disable it first to use GIGABYTE PerfDrive profiles

twin dew
#

Yup.

night girder
#

Sep 27, 2024

twin dew
#

And now there is also F12 BIOS from january this year.

#

So update your BIOS

pure karma
pure karma
#

good luck

mental oriole
pure karma
#

XTU probably has it

twin dew
# pure karma good luck

Good luck with what?
Finding that you are on BIOS F10 or older which don't contain the various fixes to Intel issues.

pure karma
#

yea F11D

#

so yes the default is not on by default

twin dew
#

From before F11 stable

#

So update to that F12 stable.

mental oriole
#

My baseboard version is also x.x hehe

pure karma
#

remember what happened when you told me to update drivers

#

everything died

twin dew
#

Because expectation was that we had talked enough about the various Intel 13th and 14th gen stability issues for you to have fixed those on your computer.

pure karma
#

i did until i updated to F11D and left it how it was because you insisted on me not touching anything

mental oriole
#

On my new pc

#

Idk, waiting to be installed by you? hehe

pure karma
#

been trying to fix this ram for the past year

#

actually going on 2 years now

twin dew
#

And if it is your CPU that is unstable and not the RAM?

#

RAM or GPU cannot be tested reliably if CPU is unstable.

pure karma
#

so what am i checking for then

twin dew
#

Update the BIOS, let it be on Intel Defaults and RAM on Auto?

#

Then see if the computer is stable or not?

pure karma
#

wont be stable either way if i leave the iGpu on

twin dew
#

And where did I say anything about the IGP?

pure karma
#

default is on

twin dew
#

I said "Intel Defaults" and RAM on auto.

pure karma
#

aka testing for stability with sli microstutering among other things

twin dew
#

But that IGP issue is almost certainly from unstable CPU or RAM.

pure karma
#

fine then let me spend an hour figuring out how to update this stupid bios again

#

i dont even know if its gonna let me flash it since the onboard USB are all dead or unusably bad

twin dew
#

But getting the file from the disk?

pure karma
#

grabbing the file directly from the os drive?

#

dosent work says its not valid if you do that

twin dew
#

Needs to be uncompressed.

pure karma
#

Xmp off or on first?

twin dew
pure karma
#

I dont think this bios is capable of updating itself

pure karma
#

Il restart and try again but its not reading any drives

twin dew
#

Formatted in NTFS?
Or FAT?

pure karma
#

does it want it when its still zipped or something

#

Yea no the bios cant read newer versions

#

i just tried F6 and it reads and gives the uption to boot like it should

#

actually there is one more thing i could try

#

well i tried

#

its either not detected or unreadable

pure karma
#

oh actually i know exactly whats up

#

the bios is probably as dumb as windows i bet this will work

tribal kraken
#

Your USB stick is formatted FAT32? Is the bios only file on the drive? Do you double click the file in qflash manager?

pure karma
#

its in FAT32 but above the limit so i bet thats why

tribal kraken
#

Above limit? Like large capacity?

pure karma
#

yea

#

trying to wipe the drive and now windows is bitchign that powerpoint files are system files ๐Ÿ’€

tribal kraken
#

Do you double click the file in the qflash manager or click the right arrow?

pure karma
#

im not there yet im fixing the drive capacity problem

#

i have to use a diffrent one cause i dont want to break my partitions since there a pain to make

#

I knew it

#

they truly do make things hard for no reason

#

Or not because it dosent work either

#

it reads the drive atleast this time but it cant read the file so its still useless

#

Wait no i can force it to read it anyway thats right

#

there took long enough

pure karma
#

what are we testing first

#

there default + xmp on and igpu off

pure karma
#

now what

#

am i supost to just do another present mon run or something

#

im going to do it anyway because im curious

#

oof i saw the stuters even through framegen on that one

#

ok just everything is dead

#

tired_jace DANGIT MICROSOFT

#

can you ever work

#

well anyway it was better until it wassent and died

pure karma
#

framerates so bad i cant even turn it into a graph

#

and gpu is skipping frames so its Dead from that driver update

#

thanks baldur jacesus

languid gulch
#

one of the main reasons that Mir got deorbited was because of the uncontrollable bacterial/biological growth on board, so bad they they were concerned that it would compromise hull integrity. while we learned from those lessons with the ISS, it really only slowed things down & didn't stop it completely.

separate from that, the pressure vessels still experience the spacecraft equivalent of airliner compression/decompression cycles, and will eventually have dangerous fatigue

charred relic
#

Could stand to have something better higher up... ISS is barely even in space heh

languid gulch
#

i don't think i've ever seen it in scifi, but i'd love to see 3 big fat human occupied stations at 120ยฐ from each other up at geostationary altitude

charred relic
#

Ever see the video of the guy on the ISS showing a maintenance burn to prevent de-orbit where he steadies a DLSR camera and lets it float there then the burn starts and you see the camera slowly moving towards you.

#

What a lot of folks don't consider if they are actually at about 90% of Earth gravity... but they are falling around the planet.

languid gulch
#

yea, fun to see because you see not just the prograde motion of the camera, but also it dropping relative to the station as the station starts reaccelerating to a higher altitude

#

also seeing when they stranded an astronaut in midair was incredible

your suit burns all it's fuel in the perfect orientation to try to deorbit you lol

you'd have to have really really terrible luck

languid gulch

eh, 5m/s out of 7500 won't be enough to deorbit you on its own, drag over a couple days would do more than that on its own

im usually trying to avoid anything additional that could add any compression, artifacting, latency...

#

not sure what the latency is like on them these days though

#

like even 10ms is a big deal for me tho

#

a lot of latency to add for wireless lol

#

Which for most people wouldn't matter but... for music it does

#

ever tried to play an instrument when it's too far behind on the adio... lol

#

really same thing happens speaking too, hearing yourself delayed will jam your brain right up heh

#

like my rountime for a USB interface right now is 3.00ms

#

that's at 64 samples which i can get by with way less if i really wanted

#

no i take that back... round trip is 4.33 heh

#

I have a few select vinyls

#

Few old ZZ Top records... Motley Crue Shout at The Devil, complete with pentragram

#

Michael Jackson's Off the Wall lol

#

And Thriller...

#

The real gem is a hand me down from my older bro... Ted Nugent's Double Live Gonzo on 8-track

#

His car and our home system had an 8-track

#

I almost sold my Jackson stuff when he kicked the bucket because the value shot up for a brief period

#

But man I've had those records since I was a little kid

#

I bought them... lol mostly at Turtles

#

exactly

#

i've had those records for over 40 years

#

what am i gonna get... 100... 200 if im lucky even at a time like that

#

not worth

#

I used to listen to that Crue album so much

#

all of them...

#

things were going from records to cassette tapes so i didn't have tooo many

#

the records sounded better though because the home stereo had a turntable but no cassette player so...

#

i had a little cheap mono radio tha thad a tape player

#

And... it could record. Man we'd spend ages waiting on a song to come on to hit record... then you'd screw up and miss part and have to wait AGAIN

#

before those bar phones were the thing i had one of those micro tacs, but i was hacking it

#

it was a process on those... needed a bag phone modded with a chip ad a "loader". Hook that to pc with a cable you had to make, load the identify, unplug

#

use another cable from the bag phone to the flip phone to do an identity transfer, again a cable you had to make

#

the nokia's had at least one (that i owned) that you could program right on the pad lol

#

i build a caddy for my portable cd player for my car since skips

#

it was make out of popsickle sticks and rubber bands. The CD unit in a frame, that framd attacked to an outter frame via rubber bands so it'd kinda "float"

#

worked fairly well, not 100%

#

But it let me use the cassette adapter to play CD's in the car yaaay!

#

T he shit we'd do to get to the latest tech without spending all the money on that actual tech

#

Oh and I have the first CD I ever bought. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I got the player... and exactly 1 CD that day hhaha

#

Stuff with no interface and relies on a bluetooth connection is sometimes offputting to me too. Like I was looking at label makers and one was this small thing with no keyboard, no function buttons it's all done via bluetooth to use the thing

#

Well with phones they aren't even using the newest cpu design i don't think, the M series

#

i have a M2 iPad Air that has really really good battery life

#

My phone is... I'm still using the 13 Pro Max, don't feel compelled to upgrade yet

#

I've become an iHead. And the funny part is 5-6 years ago if you saidI'd be an Apple mobie device fan I'd have laughed you out of existence itself...

#

Well they do seem... nice. My tablet can even do some light gaming. Like NBA 2kwhatever

#

runs great... lots of little games like that

#

it'll save me a lot of boredom next time i land in the hospital for a week

#

chips are hard? ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I dunno... Apple has been working on this line of chips a long time now

#

the flagship phone is, like samsung, pricey

#

their tablets you can get something good reasonably though

#

Plus even if I got a Samsung I'd get the flagship

#

depends on the market

#

worldwide android has a larger install base

#

as far as development goes... depends on who is spending

#

wow in europe sansung and apple are neck and neck lol

#

UK, apple lead, US apple lead

#

Big leads too...

#

If I check most Asian markets it'll be somethbing else tho...

#

wow nope asia as a whole.. apple and samsung

#

figured it would be xiomi...

#

apple does one important thing i use alllll the time... amplitube

#

and it does it very well

#

Also can do that and run a DAW... good enough for me ๐Ÿ˜„

#

run who

#

ohhh native instruments

#

shit no links... Traktor DJ 2

#

So far I juse use Garangeband since I just need basic stuff usually on mobie.

#

But it has most of the good ones... Cubasis, Reason, Ableton, Logic Pro...

#

Wish Repear had a mobie version for apple

#

As long as it can load audio drivers... they'd have to be low latency. On PC you usually use ASIO

#

outside of that it's basically just an external soundcard...

#

with a lot of specialized controls lol

#

And unusual array of input/outputs lol

#

Please MS don't try to make a Realtek audio interface with built on XLR's and shit :/

#

they'd do it if they was like... a streamer market or something haha

#

Yeah who doesn't want to plug a 400 dollar microphone into a Realtek audio setup that uses a 3 dollar IC

#

I've had some Realtek issues in the past, they basically own that market at this point

#

for like network shit too, you can specifically shop for boards with the IBM stuff tho

#

for the network at least...

#

errr intel stuff i mean

#

REally if I wanted to I could not have the realtek audio active at all, i could disable it

#

and just route the output to my interace out to speakers heh

#

but i have no issues with whatever is on this board soooo

#

my friend got a soundblaster kit when they were brand new, wiuth the sound card and cd drive

#

cost a fortune heh...

#

But he went from bleep bloop to real audio

#

i used a 286 desktop then a 386 laptop until the pentiums were out then i got one of those and it had audio and all that baked in, it was standard by then

#

And I could do what my 486 pals could no... play Quake bahahahahq

#

no

#

and really the 8086 was before the 286

#

the 8088 is the same chip with less pins and thusly less capable

And how broken the system is.

charred relic

ehh outside of the obvious not really sure

Yeah computer not working can be frustrating experience.

Before ISP's were around a local BBS had 64Kbit data and you could get a shell. There was a program for Windows calls Slipnot that would use lynx on the shell to d/l all the resources to render the page with graphics

janky.. but worked ok

BIOS feels like antique.

#

We got AI now.

#

Lets all replace this old ass tech with AI. Bios, AI. Regex. AI.

#

Everything I donโ€™t like to work with.

#

So W11 replace it with AI ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Printer drivers!

#

Who came up with that complicated shit for a printer to work?

#

W11 is pretty bad for its price

#

I mean, it offers so much shit software out of the box for a steep price.

#

No, rhe fact printers arent plug and work.

#

Its plug, nightmare, then after days it works.

#

And you got 50 drivers installed hehe

#

Point I want to make, a lot of practices even in IT are outdated imo.

#

I dont even buy printers that scan. And I didnt bother setting up wifi either. V

charred relic
#

I'm using AI to make a Forge mod lol

Updating BIOS is rocket science.

Only when I have to from the goverment.

But personally I never print. I use pen and paper for mostly everything.

I did. Waiting for a reply.

Lian Lis are nice, really liked the O11D, the 9950X3D will go on that with RTX5090. And the that Lian Li 1000W PSU will go to Lancool 216 case with 9800X3D and RTX4090. Going to sell the latter as whole custom loop watercooled PC.

#

Only problem is that neither 4090 or 5090 with watervblocks fit the O11D when mounted traditionally, the side glass panel hits the water terminal. Vertical mount works with 4090 but.. 5090 propably dont like the PCIE gen 4.0 riser if want to use Gen 5.0 with it

Distro plate, 2x360 + 1x240 rads. 12900k+RTX3090 active backplate in Lian Li O11D

pure karma
#

Anyway im going to revert that GPU driver since its the cause of this instability and il come back to xmp after

#

Either that or vram exploded on me for a second time

night girder
#

Even I knew Baldur went to bed.

#

it was like 11PM local here, that's pretty late to see Baldur in chat ๐Ÿ˜„

twin dew

That GPU driver is more likely sympton than a cause.

night girder

Good luck gents figuring it out ๐Ÿ‘

pure karma
#

frames being too corrupted to display last time i saw that was on the 1660

twin dew
#

Base point being: You don't start doing OC (XMP on etc.) until system is stable at stock.

night girder
#

And if you can't get it stable @stock. Buy new hardware?

twin dew
#

Well, that Windows install can be so corrupt that nothing will work properly anymore even with stable HW.

night girder
#

That's what I did anyway. I could have been fucking around for years with the previous CPU (which was dying).

#

Replaced CPU and stable system since then.

#

If anyone is interested in AMD 5 7600X that probably is dying hehe

tribal kraken
#

It was kinda hard to tell which was faulty when my 13900K broke, without swapping working 12900K it would have been just a guess if the fault is CPU/MB or RAM

twin dew
#

Cannot be arsed to look back into Discord to see if MagicZ:s current CPU is the one he overvolted when new in search of higher static OC.

night girder
#

That when hardware starts to fail, figuring out what...

#

"There is a chance it's the CPU, but can also be motherboard. And if that isn't it. Then it's probably RAM related. Or PSU." hehe

tribal kraken
#

RMA process was easy when I wrote email to the reseller how I tested the CPU, they sent me new CPU before they received the old one

#

Just wonder if by that time they already had many more similar cases

#

13900K bought 20.10.2022. RMA approved 2.5.2023

pure karma
#

i asked if static oc would be better or not but i nerver ran static oc

pure karma
#

i dont have another lga 1700 system, i dont have another system that takes regular ddr5, i dont have another system that could handle the 4070ti's power draw, i dont have any way to test the motherboard in any kind of official manner and everything is out of warenty or RMA so no returning anything either

#

i realistically give this thing until the aio grinds itself to death before i scrap it

#

since it has started now

winged valley
#

Magicz try not to destroy a computer challenge (impossible)

pure karma
#

can you install windows on a USB stick? like i mean run windows off of one not just put a installer on it?

winged valley
#

Anything that can have multiple partitions and support the NTFS filesystem can have Windows installed on it yes

#

However the installer will refuse to recognize most flash drives and that's done on purpose

twin dew
#

There is/was Windows feature officially named as Windows-to-Go, but it was discontinued.

pure karma
#

so then to remove OS as a factor i would have to test on linux then cause i dont have time to do a full reset and all that

winged valley
#

liveCD doesn't quite function the same as native install

#

unless you mean actually installing linux to the flash drive

feral drift
#

Depending on what you want to archive, Ubuntu is probably one of the easier solution to run an OS of a USB stick

And Ubuntu serves a fairly windows look-a-like gui as well

pure karma
#

ik it literally prompts you to keep running off the usb just ubuntu + me = death

#

so i would prefere not too

#

plus i dont know linux enough to visually or from feeling know if something isent right

#

and i dont know any testing softwware thats compatible so it would be a pain

#

problem is i dont have any throwaway drives that arent USB's or m.2's

feral drift
#

Well - What do u want to archive by running an OS off a USB?

pure karma
#

just a fresh install for temporary testing

#

without having the wipe my entire regular one

#

and then having to spend a month installing shit again

mental oriole
#

Arch. Join the suffering.

pure karma
#

ehhh i could but im too lazy

#

maybe if im bored some time i will

feral drift
#

Well if its the same system you're wiping over and over.. You could explore the use of Unattended installation of Windows - then you can pre-package the installation with drivers, anti-virus ect. so your next format isn't as tedious

pure karma
#

logging in to 31283192 apps is still a thing

feral drift

Well.. sounds like a solution for AutoIt :D

i was thinking about it and maybe i should dual boot windows and windows so have one be stripped of the garbage for gaming and so on, and one be normal for productivity and stuff

I installed Win11 at Christmast for 9800X3D and plan to do it fresh tonight too for 9950X3D. Dunno if going to see any difference but thats what they recommend for the dual CCD CPUS, that the core parking works correctly. And want the Windows on the new Samsung 9100 Pro drive too.

#

Asrock also has a "cableless" mobo.

#

Not sure what type though. But interesting idea.

#

But how do you find cases that are compatible with such boards ๐Ÿ˜’

#

Because your case need different holes for the cables if the cables are from the back of the board.

kit can't share without cables ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Ah, it seems cases have "Back-connect compatible'" feature for such boards.

asrock

IIRC it was Asus making first expo-promo board like that too.

Basically that GPU power thing is extension of that, to not have any cables on the "front" side anymore.

I am getting really annoyed with firefox lately.

mental oriole
#

Not surprised.

night girder
#

constantly doing shit in the background leeching my bandwith without me knowing, then I close firefox, it updates. While I turned auto updates off everywhere.

#

But every update Firefox put auto update back to enabled or something. Wtf is this practice?

#

Like fuck sake, what kind of browser for power users is this?

#

Yeah, it put everything to auto.

#

Fucking obnoxious again. Every update, it sets itself back to auto update.

#

Why give people an option to disable auto update, and when they update, it resets that option.

#

Because that's clearly what people want, who already disabled it in the first place.

#

I am losing it over here ๐Ÿคฃ

#

It was the last browser I liked.

#

Look at this shit. Every two days they pushing updates.

feral drift
#

Ewww Firefox - Didn't they go full onboard the "We used to not sell your data, but now we do"

night girder
#

Alternatives? That don't suck?

feral drift
#

Dunno have been pretty happy with DuckDuckGo..

night girder
#

It's not that I want to give up on firefox.

#

It's just that they do everything in their power to piss off their community it seems.

#

DuckDuckGo's founder and CEO explained the company was "currently contractually restricted by Microsoft" due to their use of Bing's data to power the DuckDuckGo search engine.[17] In August 2022, however, the company announced that they would block Microsoft trackers.[18]

#

So, it blocks trackers aslong as it doesn't hamper their legal obligations with microsoft ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

And DDG is built upon bing. Bing went down a while back and so did DDG.

#

There goes the credibility of DuckDuckGo.

#

DDG is better than google imo, just not that innocent/transparent as they want us to believe.

Both are hard, or so I read. Only the installer tries to make it a little more doable for non power users.
