night girder
#

Who cares. They just need to take it and sell it.

twin dew
#

So if you don't do it all the time, you get hit by them like asablic says.

night girder
#

Wtf. Makes no sense.

visual tree
#

We have weird laws, asked ChatGPT to summarize it for you hehe

night girder
#

You make more electricity than you need, from a renewable source, can't they just sell it to someone who needs that power at the time?

#

Every wins.

twin dew
#

Just not how the grid companies all over the world do it.

visual tree
#

Check point 2 and 5

#

Other points can be ignored in my case

night girder
#

But it's free for the electricity company tired_jace

twin dew
#

Haven't looked more into the whys on why they do it.

twin dew
night girder
#

Costumer produces energy for free. Electricity company gets this extra/left-over energy for free to sell. And someone is able to buy energy for lower price. And it's renewable!!!

visual tree
night girder
#

What is the main focus here? Profit or having renewable energy (a.k.a. saving the planet)? 🤔

night girder
#

Btw, here it's the same bullshit. That's why I have no solar panels.

#

Can you store the energy yourself?

#

Is that legally allowed?

visual tree
#

Batteries are very expensive and almost everyone here choose on-grid solar panel system

#

Batteries are only worth it if you live in a remote location where there is no electricity

night girder
#

I mean, if you have a lot of energy, and you store it into batteries. You could technically go off grid?

#

So that means you only pay for the infrastructure. No monthly/yearly fees to companies?

#

I know this is forbidden in some countries.

#

And I am not 100% what the real reason is.

visual tree
#

If you are off-grid and have batteries, you don't pay anything to anyone 🙂

night girder
#

Are they more expensive than paying the company? 🤔

#

Not sure how long they last.

twin dew
#

Enough will cost tens of thousands, and lifespan is usually calculated at 5-10 years.

visual tree
#

But if your house is connected to the grid, it's cheaper to use solar panels without batteries

charred relic
#

The electricity in this area is likely very green 😄

#

Since nuclear...

night girder
visual tree
#

Yes

night girder
#

You calculated this?

#

11K for a battery with 4 to 24.0 kWh.

visual tree
#

If you for example generated 5.000 kWh in a year and consumed exactly the same amount or close, your bill would be almost zero

night girder
#

Yikes 🙈

charred relic
#

If you overproduce here it feeds the grid and they pay you...

visual tree
#

Now, imagine if you bought batteries and were in identical situation.

night girder
#

How much do you generate a day and consume?

night girder
visual tree
#

Your bill would still be almost zero but you just wasted money on batteries which you don't need

charred relic
#

I thought about doing panels but they haven't made it cheap enough here...

night girder
#

I don't know what is the best. Would need to make my own excel.

charred relic
#

I'd also never get off the grid... not even a chance

night girder
#

It's not that energy prices are stable from the company.

#

📈

night girder
charred relic
#

I wouldn't be able to resonably geneate the power I need...

#

There are times when I'm burning off 1000w 24/7 for weeks...months even

night girder
#

Off the grid would solve so many problems tired_jace

#

No more insane power grids to maintain.

#

Underground grids. Above ground grids with drawbacks. Maintenance. Buying electricity from other countries etc.

#

Produce locally is always better imo. The shorter the distance between the goods and the destination the better. Also for food, clothes etc.

charred relic
#

Need more nuclear plants.. tbh.

night girder
#

Yeah.

charred relic
#

Love it or hate it, best current solution.

night girder
#

If you give every house a little nuclear plant, it's fixed.

visual tree
#

@night girder ChatGPT made the perfect explanation:

charred relic
#

T hat 's a concept... you'd have a fuel cell basically

#

every few decades somebody comes out and pops a new one in.

night girder
#

I only agree to nuclear as a transitional energy.

charred relic
#

Small reactors are already a thing... I mean we aren't that far off heh

visual tree
#

In short, when something doesn't make sense here, it's usually dumb laws hehe

night girder
charred relic
#

That's often the case... anywhere lol

#

They rarely think the laws through...

night girder
charred relic
#

trhen the unintended consequences etc etc... ugh

twin dew
#

The duck curve is a graph of power production over the course of a day that shows the timing imbalance between peak demand and solar power generation. The graph resembles a sitting duck, and thus the term was created. Used in utility-scale electricity generation, the term was coined in 2012 by the California Independent System Operator.

visual tree
#

If you want to produce a lot of energy and sell it (while being profitable), you are better off starting a company and installing solar panels over a large area

night girder
#

Which is broader than solar energy.

#

wind, water, solar and nuclear. hehe

#

and geysers.

twin dew
#

Yeah, but rooftop solar is only one that consumers can really install.

night girder
#

Wind turbines are installed in our backyards.

charred relic
#

Ok I have a plan... hear me out. We all put little fans in front of our mouth with a tiny turbine to generate current. We breath, spins fan, generates electricity, boom!

night girder
#

Water should be technical possible too 🤣

twin dew
night girder
#

Gotcha 👌

night girder
#

Eat beans for days to get my 5090 running while playing SF.

charred relic
#

Sure, in fact make fart pants turbines mandatory

#

all new pants must have a fart turbine

#

How dare all of you waste that precious gas...

night girder
#

and it's natural 😉

cinder moon
#

I'm a big fan of schemes that allow ordinary consumers to own a share of a new renewable build. In that way they can own part of a wind farm, and use it to offset their energy bill.
I don't recall what the technical term for it is though.

charred relic
#

100%

#

Usually I save mine for a hillbilly hot tub. But I'm willing to make the sacrifice...

night girder
#

And problem solved? I am sure they could think of something. If they wanted. But the question is, how much do they want to solve these problems.

#

And how much are they afraid for change.

#

Because it's still big corpos running the whole elctricity scheme.

cinder moon
#

We still need big spinning things on the grid regardless. Maybe that's nuclear, maybe that's thermal storage or burning hydrogen being used to turn turbines.

twin dew
#

And for example nuclear power is very slow to adjust to load demand changes safely.

night girder
twin dew
#

The only really adjustable power generation methods are water and gas turbines.

cinder moon
#

At least right now.

night girder
#

Technically solar too no?

#

You can turn away solar panels to produce less.

twin dew
#

Yes, currently in usable way.

cinder moon
night girder
#

But solar isn't 24/7.

#

If there was only a way to have solar satelites and send that energy wireless to our planet.

#

But afaik, we don't have the technology to send energy wireless over a long distance.

cinder moon
#

And it's both wind and solar that we're trying to work around because of the fact. So it doesn't make much sense to talk about ramping solar down, when we're mostly trying to cover the times when solar and wind aren't abundant.

night girder
#

And bringing the energy back and forth by other means don't sound efficient/plausible.

cinder moon
night girder
#

That's the point I wanted to make.

cinder moon
#

One of the more interesting projects I've heard of, but haven't seen any updates to, was large blocks of carbon being used for thermal energy storage, heated using excess grid power.
Run water through a few of those and you get high temperature steam needed for spinning a turbine.
The only issue is you need a lot of excess renewables to charge it up. But at the rate we're building, that might not be as big a deal.

#

That seems like it would be an adjustable source of stored energy though.

#

Now I stop because agony

What're recommendations for a 15/16in laptop in the 1200-1800usd price range?
Priority is battery life and screen
My first thought was xps15

gilded helm
#

My father's Kaby Lake XPS 15 is still running great with no sign of needing replacement. I think at some point they had a few bad generations though? Can't be sure.

jagged snow
#

It'd be new gen

gilded helm
#

I remember thinking aloud Lunar Lake or Strix XPS 15 would be really good, but you'd need to check some sort of 'what's new' comparison article to get a sense of where the lineup is these days in terms of quality.

languid gulch
#

did intel make 13th/14th gen cpus long enough to put the "fixed" microcode into it from the start?

gilded helm
#

My guess is they rely on the same method of patching microcode on boot, similar to how spectre/meltdown fixes have worked.

#

Functionally if they weren't the same, by now we would have seen people seeking out newer stepping 13/14th gen

twin dew
languid gulch
#

LOL 9070XT "MSRP Upscaling" comments in GN's latest vid is great

twin dew
#

Wonder if the GPU makers are again fucking around because of tariffs.
During the last set of Trump tariffs, they raised prices world-wide by lesser percentage than their extra costs in US.
To keep US prices lower, taking less profit there, but compensating by raising prices everywhere else too and taking higher profit...
"We cannot raise prices in US as our sales would get significantly lower" as explanation IIRC...

languid gulch
#

deliberate chaos with the hopes of increasting profit margin

#

tarriffs, short supply, claimed bells & whistles, any excuse to overcharge

twin dew
#

It was obvious that EU importer/distributor level is/was scalping 9070:s at least on launch day.

#

Or possibly the card maker level above them, or both.

languid gulch
#

i wonder if we're seeing conflict between the gpu makers & the AIB partners spilling out into the open

twin dew
#

So when the levels above the retail stores already scalped, there is nothing the store can do to lower the price.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

magically, none of the companies are willing to take a financial hit. whodathunkit

twin dew
#

AMD promised rebates for retail level to compensate, but initial amounts were low in number of rebates.

languid gulch
#

i consider rebates to not count as msrp

twin dew
#

Not that the buyer gets rebate.

languid gulch
#

oh in any case

#

anything that costs the customer more

#

you know that a store is going to find a way to pass any loss on to the customer to make up for it

twin dew
languid gulch
#

yea global launches really need to include global pricing for msrp & not just USD

twin dew
#

Either card maker, or importer/distributor levels, or both, charging more than MSRP.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

i'm sick of all the caveats. regulators really need to crack down on what's a functional lie

twin dew
#

But in most of western world, forcing MSRP isn't allowed.

#

It can only be suggestion.

languid gulch
#

in that case i'm happy seeing what the wholesale cost is and negotiate from there

twin dew
#

AMD charges something for the GPU chip from the board makers.
AMDs official control on pricing ends there.

languid gulch
#

i just hate all of it. the customers get screwed no matter what & i'm beyond sick of it

#

i'm not even in the market, i just want to see it be fair for customers

twin dew

When everything gets sold anyways, of course the selling side will raise prices if there isn't something not allowing for that.
Basic supply and demand.
Will go down once the supply side starts to fill up.

languid gulch

i appreciate that Steve explained that paying $800 for a 9070XT is a higher premium than the Kingpin & Strix OC cards

night girder
#

Baldur, what you think about the 8500T?

#

Is it good CPU for devices around 100-150 euro?

#

Because I am hunting for them now 👿

twin dew
#

For CPU only, no.
For whole system, yes.

night girder
#

First, I was looking for thinkcentre, then I realised, the brand doesn't matter right?

twin dew
#

For the use you were thinking.

night girder
#

So now I am looking for mini PC's with a 8500T.

#

And I find a few HP prodesks for around 130

#

8500T has 6 cores.

#

Which sounds nice to me ;3

#

It's still a mini PC. 130 euro is like buying the PI. 16GB ram (more than PI). CPU is better than PI also.

#

Just not sure the quality of a HP ProDesk.

#

Oh shit.

twin dew
#

Still made for company/enterprise market, so good enough.

night girder
#

I just got a reply from somone.

#

Selling m920q for 200 euro.

#

I bid 130 euro. They say; ok.

twin dew
#

Not that uncommon.

night girder
#

Yeah, I post a bid because the ad was up for two months.

twin dew
#

That people put stuff for sale at high price, and then settle for much less when asked.

night girder
#

So I was hoping they are desperate to get rid of it.

#

It's a M920Q, 16GB and a 8500T.

#

Niiiice.

#

For me. Sucks for you Baldur 🤣

twin dew
#

And I got a fort-in-progress:

willow pike
#

@twin dew would like some advice; I wanna sell some old GPUs I have lying around (haven't before now cause of eBay shenanigans) but I wanna test them to make sure they work first. will swapping them in and out work fine for just a stress test or will a DDU each time be necessary

twin dew
#

Not doing DDU should just cause performance issue.
So should only be needed after last one, when returning to your own GPU.

willow pike
#

gotcha that helps

#

might cause a crash or two I guess but whatever, I'm just gonna furmark or 3dmark stress test them

#

gonna be a bitch buying and selling on a brand new eBay account without any ratings though

night girder
twin dew
#

If you do hit a GPU that crashes, then you should do DDU and retry.

twin dew
#

Not very efficient build from gameplay perspective.

night girder

It does look sick.

So many completely non-functional things in there...

Today I had so much fun chasing my own tail. ondragover html wouldn't fire in Svelte. So me looking into Svelte and why it didn't work.

But after a while, it turned out it wasn't Svelte 🙈 It was a Tauri setting.

dragDropEnabled
boolean

Whether the drag and drop is enabled or not on the webview. By default it is enabled.

Disabling it is required to use HTML5 drag and drop on the frontend on Windows.

And ofc, intuitive as it is, I had to set that to false in order to get it all to work.

I asked the a developer of Tauri why, but didn't really get a real answer 🤷‍♂️

i'd love to feel what the apollo chungus panel switches are like

charred relic

And I do have some stuff on a board that is on a 4 DIP switch that I'd like to externalize

as well as a couple of the high end roll off internal pots... and the biasing pot for another pedal so it can have it's bias adjustted without opening

yea this thing was a yamaha i think, with 1/4" & XLR for each channel

charred relic

If it was a mixer it's going to be down to the preamps to a large degree

languid gulch
#

yea was just a mixer

charred relic

assuming none of the pots or sliders are scratchy

if it has a good pre.. it'd still work fine. If it sounded ok then it'd sound ok now heh

#

Would just lack the modern conveniences mostly

languid gulch
#

would that hardware have been hit by the capacitor plague?

charred relic
#

No idea

languid gulch
#

late 90s/early 2000s

charred relic
#

not sure what capacitors were really hit, I'm sure it wasn't ALL of them

#

and a board like that is only likely going to have smaller components inside, nothing large is needed really

#

even for the power supply since they don't use much juice

languid gulch
#

yea true, i just have the kind of luck where i bet they'd all blow at the same time

charred relic
#

hence why some of these boards and a lot of the interfaces are USB power only

languid gulch
#

i haven't looked at pricing or features in years

charred relic
#

Can always open something up and inspect the caps

#

easy to spot ones that are swelling

languid gulch
#

oh i got rid of it like 15 years ago 🤣

charred relic
#

Also those are easy to replace too since they're not SMD's

#

As soon as my next pedal is done the OG XBOX goes on the bench for cap replacement

#

they are just a bit domed at the top on mine, those big PSU caps

languid gulch
#

was fun to see buildzoid popping caps last week

charred relic
#

Fortunately that's an easy console to get in to maintenance and i've hjad it apart before

charred relic
#

That's on my wishlist of items... a solder reflow gun, hot air

#

it'll make my life so much easier for some shit

#

What's really fun is sending a lithum battery into thermal runaway

#

Those types of caps if not abused last basically forever too heh

#

T he one he popped there

languid gulch
#

i wish i had the space to have some of that fun stuff

#

right now i'm trying to find room for my bandsaw

charred relic
#

a decent soldering setup does take up a bit of space

#

especially if you start expanding and adding hot air wands and stuff

night girder
#

Zer00_Empathy comment especially.

twin dew
#

Mixing solid polymer caps with basic electrolytic caps.

night girder
#

Yes, video creator mentions that.

#

It's just the way Zer00_Empathy posted their comment that I find amusing.

#

Is it healty to burn capacitors? I know they are small, but when they pop, does anything toxic get released?

charred relic
#

They're safe

night girder
#

AI:

Some capacitors, particularly electrolytic types, can contain hazardous materials that may be toxic if leaked or vaporized. It's important to handle them with care and follow safety guidelines to minimize exposure to any harmful substances.

#

So I assume these aren't electrolytic types?

charred relic
#

the danger is what they do when abused

#

that's a small one, large ones can hold enough of a punch to knock you back

night girder
#

Well, our friend is literally cooking them for 4-5 minutes straight at 360-400 celcius.

charred relic
#

or kill you....

twin dew
languid gulch
#

i mean, i wouldn't shove my nose right up to something that's just short of molten lead temps

languid gulch

eh, i did dumber when i was younger & don't have cancer yet

charred relic
#

that's about as violent as a cap that size will ever get heh

languid gulch
#

i just love the raw confidence in the claims, followed by a guy just popping them without much effort

charred relic
#

toxic can also be dangerous... or not.

#

I handle a toxic substance on a regular basis... lead.

languid gulch
#

everything has a LD50

charred relic
#

as long as im not putting it in my mouth or handing it with broken skin I'll be fine, now breathing the solder fumes is bad bad

night girder
#

I mean, the way he heats the capacitator isn't the same as a capacitator would heat normally?
In the sense, he heats them from the outside at very high temperature. Normally it would heat from the inside no?
So could this give different effects as cracking open at top vs popping off?

twin dew
charred relic
#

Yes it would normally get hot from the inside if it's overloaded, but either way the polymer reacts the same

#

it swells... doesn't matter if inside heat or outside

languid gulch
charred relic
#

plus like i said those polymer caps last basically forever unabused

twin dew
#

But polymer caps like that don't have the safety valve cuts, because in any normal fault situation they don't do anything weird.

charred relic
#

what did he have the gun set to? i skipped ahead so if he mentioned i didn't see it

#

that gun is cable of getting super super hot

#

or barely hot...

twin dew
#

While the classic electrolytics have cans that are designed to vent safely.

night girder
#

later 400 celcius

languid gulch
#

and like he showed, it takes a fuckton of "definitely not recommended to do this" do make em pop, but if you have some idiot who takes a smoke break & forgets to turn off the heat gun..........

charred relic
#

Yeah that's what the slits are in the top of those caps if yiou see them, to allow for some expansion without an pop

#

containment is what causes them to explode... although that size calling it an explosion is a joke

twin dew
charred relic
#

well they fent and keep the pressure out is what im saying

languid gulch
#

yea that's not even on the scale of one of those little champagne poppers

charred relic
#

if it can't swell it will explode eventually

languid gulch
charred relic
#

Yeah but we're very stretchy...

#

😄

languid gulch
#

🤣

twin dew
#

Yeah, but point was that the normal electrolytics are expected to have failure modes where they need to vent.
Polymer ones don't, so even full on short circuit in one shouldn't cause that kind of pop.

night girder
charred relic
#

It's for the same reason they'll drill a hole in your skull for a brain injurt

pure karma
charred relic
#

swelling to give it room lol

#

Hole or die...

languid gulch
#

from what i know a detonation breaks the sound barrier, a conflagration doesn't, but both can count as explosions

twin dew
#

From that very high heat.

charred relic
#

Yeah and those types can damage boards

#

unfortunately...

night girder
#

Respect, 25 minute video to show they pop and not vent.

#

How to win a internet discussion.

charred relic
#

that kind shouldn't need to vent really

night girder
#

Not the point. It started with a comment.

#

Of someone that was 100% sure about they vent.

#

So he made a video to proof they pop. That's all there is to it afaik

charred relic
#

Lithium cells are designed to vent too 🙂

and they will vent... fire

and I mean, the one who supplied amazon with the 9800X3D

#

or someone inside the warehouse stealing/replacing em 🤔

languid gulch
#

it was properly sealed, so good question

#

is amazon doing "proper" resealing of returned products & reselling it as new?

night girder
#

Or amazon received a bad batch. All fakes 🤣

twin dew

Or just scammer stock, Amazon mixes items from everyone selling "same" thing.

charred relic

My mom ordered Apple Airpods from Amazon. They came she opened everyhting up and got to the product box... opened it. Empty, no buds.

night girder

I don't want to be the intern at amazon having to go through em all to find fakes 🤣

twin dew

So even if you buy from reputable subseller, you can get fake that someone else sent in as "same item".

languid gulch

can you do something like use a heat gun to pop a seal sticker & then re-adhere it after you pull the fraud?

charred relic

I used to have access to heat shrink stuff so yes

languid gulch

i feel like the seal should do a color change or something as a tamper indicator

They send stock to Amazon warehouses for any sales.

Amazon puts both companys products into same bin as they are "the same item".

#

And whenever someone buys one, from either, you get random unit from the bin.

night girder
#

So, yeah. As I though. Shady supplier. I mean, as a possibility.

languid gulch
#

to me amazon & AMD should both be on the hook 50/50 for refunding. hopefully that'd get them to do some actual headhunting vs the fraudsters

twin dew
#

Can be return scam.
Can be seller scam.

night girder
#

If my supplier, ships returned items as "new" to me, I would not be amused.

twin dew
#

And that that the "equivalent" items (based on item code) are mixed is just so stupid when fake items being sold as real is so common.

night girder
twin dew
#

How could AMD be in any way responsible?

night girder
#

Isn't it hard to keep track of where their items go? They can sell it to suppliers, but they sell it to other traders and on and on it goes.

#

Once they sell it, it's kind out of their control.

#

I would assume, the one who sells it directly to consumers needs to do some sort of quality check.

#

Not quality, but to make sure it's legit.

twin dew
#

And why would you expect that anyone AMD related has ever even seen even the box in which that thing came in?
If it was seller fake and not return scam.

night girder
#

I didn't say that 😒 That was Cuyar 😛

twin dew
#

Sorry, wasn't to you, continuation of previous message to Cuyar without using reply on either.

#

Point earlier was that even if you buy from "AMD" on Amazon with "Fullfilled by Amazon", you can get fake from some other sellers stock, as Amazon mixes them together.

languid gulch
#

idk, just seems like if they valued their products enough, they'd put some fraud protections on it, & if not, they become financially responsible for the loss. and can be free to hunt down & prosecute the people committing the fraud with their products

languid gulch
twin dew
#

There aren't any perfect anti-tamper techs.
The one AMD CPU boxes has is on the higher end.

languid gulch
#

true. but then that means that AMD should be pressuring amazon to not mix new & returned stock

night girder
#

imagine if we could buy straight from AMD hehe

languid gulch
#

could you imagine if it was medication that was getting returned with swapped ingredients?

twin dew
#

Point is that no-one should have been buying anything from Amazon for years at this point.

#

But you just keep doing it.

night girder

they*

languid gulch

yea, they. think the last thing i bought on amazon was a gpu jack stand

pure karma
#

i think i asked this before but is it normal for suround to be forced enabled when 3 of the same monitors are conected with no option to turn it off in any way

#

or is it just because im using the 3DP conections and if i make one HDMI then it will seperate them

#

because i want to use all 3 of my 1440P monitors but i dont want them stuck in ultrawide

#

so i have to use 2 and keep using my 1080P monitor and just have one sitting off all the time

languid gulch
#

does the nvidia software allow you to set monitors at different refresh rates?

languid gulch
#

haven't gotten my 2nd monitor set up yet, but under amd i'd have to shut off my 2nd monitor so i could bump the main one up to 144hz

gilded helm
#

Steve Burke probably doesn't realize he looked like a scalper when he tried to order all those GPUs. It wouldn't surprise me if a manual review process on orders resulted in someone just canning all of his. Depending on the how much effort he put into disassociating his orders from one another.

feral drift
languid gulch
#

i'd get screwy screen blackouts when i'd try to run my main at 144hz & my 2nd at 75hz

#

it's like every couple minutes the refresh rates would desync or something

fiery shoal
#

do you have g sync enabled?

#

I had a similar issue with a 144hz screen and 60hz tv connected simultaneously

#

turning g sync off fixed it

languid gulch
#

will try that once it's "fully" up & running with the 2nd monitor

#

i keep forgetting that the beef i have now will max out my monitor, so i don't need to have any sync stuff on

#

ok how the hell do i have 7 extra C13 cables

twin dew
#

And the link then gets renegotiated time to time.

#

Not AMD GPU or driver issue.

#

But very typical of DisplayPort cable running past what it can do.

#

That monitor is switching between uncompressed and compressed modes on each blackout.

languid gulch
#

possibly, will need to do some more screwing around

twin dew
#

The stupid thing about that DP behavior is, that if the cable connection was just tiny bit worse, it would just run with DSC all the time, and you wouldn't notice anything.

#

But it gets bad moment, switched to DSC.
Then after time it switches back as the connection seems to be good enough to work without DSC.
And then another bad moment and another switch to DSC.

languid gulch
#

yea, might invest in the new hdmi protocol

twin dew
#

Or just new cable?

languid gulch
#

i'm on hdmi rn

#

just 1.4 i think

#

it doesn't black out nearly as often, but it still does

twin dew
#

Ah, ok.
Then shouldn't do that kind of switches, but probably loses the signal sync.
But HDMI on edge would usually first cause snow.

#

But AMD cards should be able to do two completely separate HDMI streams.

languid gulch
#

with my old system, yea, that definitely could have been bad cables

#

that layout involved the cheapest & longest cables i could find 🤣

#

after watching the LTT vid on cable quality i'm actually kinda surprised i got any signal at all

#

plus since it's a top end system i'm not going to be going cheap with something like cables in the future, might make everything active

twin dew
#

Depends on the length.
5m is usually still completely fine with passive cables for DP1.4 and/or HDMI 1.4.
10m might work, but going to active at that point is usually good thing.
For lower end DP2.1 or HDMI 2.x new bandwidths 5m will probably need active, but 3m probably still works passive with good cables.

languid gulch
#

yea, i'll be hunting down some hdmi 2.1 actives, since DP is so finnicky

#

and since it's a high enough data rate to max out my monitor & even a tier above it

#

w/o DSC

pure karma
#

because i cant find anything on this

#

basically all 3 get automatically merged into 1 with no option to disable it

#

it guenuenly just straight up tricks both surroudn and windows into thinking its one ultrawide monitor instead of 3 seperate

#

so much so that unplugging them wont change anything until all 3 are unplugged

#

and if you replug all 3 while in windows it has a BSOD that nerver fully trigers bricking itself

#

😂

#

im gonna try to swap one to HDMI tonight and see what it does

#

i have a feeling its being merged by the gpu because there all on DP

surround dosent work it just insta crashes because its confused and geforce experience dosent have anything monitor related?

GeForce Experience isn't the Nvidia settings thing.

where would what i need be in control panel?

great start

pure karma
#

NV control pannel is dead when its stuck in that mode

#

insta crashes

#

its out of the question

#

thats why im saying its likely done at a non software level

#

surround only works if 2 or less monitors of the same resolution are conected at a time so you can do 2x1440P+2x1080 no problem but as soon as you do 3x either it gets stuck in permanent surround

#

thats what iv colected in terms of info from the experimenting i did

twin dew
#

Then do DDU cleanup and reinstall?
Because that crashing isn't normal?

charred relic
#

I concur

#

does not sound normal at all, not even a little heh

twin dew
#

Or when was the last time that was done?
You have been told to do it many times, but AFAIK you have never actually done it.

pure karma
#

it isent but its consistent with with it trying to merge at 165HZ

#

it either fails to lower to 120 and like i said dies in a fire or spends like 60 seconds beeping at you until it eventually gets it all right at 120

#

so thats a completely diffrent problem

#

that i dont care to fix because its irelivant

#

i dont want surround to work i want it NOT TO WORK

#

i dont want it on bruh

twin dew

And point is that your GPU drivers are fucked and need cleanup and reinstall?

charred relic

pure karma

newest one gives me compatibility issues

twin dew

And how is that relevant to what I wrote?

pure karma

because if i wipe it then il be stuck on the new one

twin dew

How?
If you never install the new one but install older one?

#

You can download and install almost any Nvidia driver version?

When you don't try to use the automatcher, but get manual installer.

pure karma
#

im telling you now DDU and drivers wont fix it

twin dew
pure karma
#

il still try it but im going to stand my ground on the fact that im confident it wont work because every problem i ask for help for always circles back to drivers and it nerver is the issue

twin dew
#

And when did you last do DDU and reinstall then?
Because it is usually recommended to you, and then you don't do it as you "know" that it will not help.

pure karma
#

nerver been recomended a DDU in here

#

atleast not that i can remember

#

only thing similar would have been that "proper" windows install forever ago

like the ram issue i was having with my laptop wasent a driver issue at all its just windows memory management that corrupts if you enter sleep mode with too much ram

twin dew
pure karma
#

how old

#

my drivers are old but like a year

twin dew
#

Not the currently installed version.
The version that was first installed after Windows install, or last DDU run.

#

And if you are on year old drivers, why?
Because if you have some weird issues with newer ones, that is almost certainly not the drivers.

pure karma
#

because there stable

twin dew
#

And that was the point, that 566.36 is stable.
Unless you have OS or HW problems.

#

And is from last December.

twin dew

So 9950X3D has no downsides compared to 9950X, except higher price.

charred relic

Apparently in some gaming situations it's worse than a 9800x3d

Just cases where the game isn't detected.

charred relic

So the other core doesn't get parked.

charred relic

Almost seems like a chip that doesn't need to even exist lol

twin dew

You can mark those manually as games, or do manual core assignment.

charred relic

But that always happens, always has always will I guess

#

The one chip that makes you go "but... why?"

twin dew
#

7950X3D with one CCD disabled will always be faster than 7800X3D, because of higher clocks.
But lot of games aren't yet marked as games in Game Bar, so the auto-parking doesn't work properly by default.

#

Trivial to add, but you need to know how to check

#

Win+G, Settings icon, tick:

#

For example Factorio still isn't game in that DB.

#

And if that toggle isn't there, then that program was marked as game already by default.

Still, respect to Hideo Kojima. He has a vision and believes in it. Dares to take risks/do something new in game development.

#

Which is kind of rare in these modern times of game development.

willow pike
#

he got fired from konami, built a new game studio from scratch, had his idea, improved upon it with others, took on feedback, pushed through naysayers, and put out a triple-A class game independently as a first release

then covid happened and suddenly it was all too relatable

Hello I'm looking for some general advice on this PC build I've been working on the last few days, ik this isn't really the place for it, but I've not had great experience in places flooded with hardcore PC gamer types. My budget is ~$1,500, I plan to use it mostly for gaming but I do mess around with stuff like photo/video editing so I'm avoiding a gaming-only CPU like the X3D series. I also don't plan on doing more than 1080p resolution wise anytime soon. I'm on Linux (Mint specifically because I'm by no means an expert on the technical), so I'd prefer to stick to an AMD system. I'd appreciate any feedback or comments from people who might know more than I do and can see flaws that I can't. Thank you!
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pZzqwY

languid gulch
#

swapped:
-cpu cooler
-ram
-SSD
-case
-PSU

the cooler's basically impossible to beat unless you have a power-sucking top end cpu, the ram & SSD are more reliable, case has included fans, PSU is (i think) a bit better.

#

which leaves just a bit left in the budget that if lightning strikes, you could grab an MSRP 9070XT instead of the 7800XT and be just under your $1500 target

rain gorge
#

Everything else looks good to me though

languid gulch
#

the case does have a solid side panel option

rain gorge
#

Oh alright cool then yeah this is good, thank you very much

languid gulch
#

& the PSU option is close enough in quality that you could go with the one you found, both are decent brands with good reputations

#

just figured i'd shave another $10 off

rain gorge
#

Yeah fair enough, I’m not really picky about brands so I’m good with saving $10 lol

languid gulch
#

ngl i tried my best to get a higher tier cpu in it, but it was going to really cost you in other areas

#

you did decent 🙂 really the only swapouts "needed" were ram & ssd, those felt a bit too cheap, & nobody likes having their drive crap out on them

rain gorge
#

tbh since I’m only planning on 1080p, I’m more than happy with the power I’d get with this CPU and there’s always the possibility of upgrading later down the line

#

And yeah I cheaped out a bit on that end to compensate for the case fans

languid gulch
#

oh yea this'll be a great platform to upgrade with. AM5's going to be around a fair bit longer

#

yea that was $125 in case+fans

#

pop air has its own for like $90

#

& ngl at $24 each i'd just jump right to Noctua if you're not going for rainbow unicorn vomit

ISP engineer just paid me a visit for connecting home to fiber 🥳

tribal kraken
#

Planning or already welding/splicing the connection to home termination box?

tall plaza
#

i have 2 x 8GB ram rn, should i buy 2 more or get 2 x 16GB?

visual tree
#

Once they are done with the construction, they will send a technician to pull the fiber towards my home and inside home

twin dew
tall plaza
#

some friends said occupying all 4 ram slots would make it slower so rather get 2 x 16gb

twin dew
#

So pretty high chance that any extra RAM can work at the same speed, and even if it doesn't, the spec speed for 4x 1R would be 2933MT/s, so not great drop.
But going to 2x 3600MT/s RAM would give better performance from higher IF frequency.

tall plaza
#

aight, thank you 👍

twin dew
#

But more ranks and DIMMs means slower max frequency.
Which is why needed to know more.

tall plaza
#

aight i see

On DDR4.

tall plaza
#

ye

tribal kraken
#

Interesting stuff with the portable suit case sized welders/splicers

visual tree
#

I work for the ISP and I can speed up the process though 🙂

#

The construction usually lasts 3 to 6 months but they could do it faster

#

And once a customer demands migration from copper to fiber, the realization deadline is 60 days

#

Technicians in my city are probably overloaded atm since a lot of area was covered with fiber in less than 1 year

#

Hopefully, the company will hire additional workforce since technicians can't keep with a lot of customer demands for splicing fiber inside home

tribal kraken
#

OK . or me it was partially goverment/EU funded project. If there were enough poeple preodering, they built networks to long distances even in rural areas. Luckily there were enough dairy farms who had interest in proper internets.

sharp oasis
visual tree
#

Half of the city that was not commercially viable was co-funded by EU and the rest was 100% financed by ISP

#

I am actually a member of the project support office related to EU-funded projects 😅

#

Basically, EU is funding areas where not a single ISP wants to invest because it's not financially viable for them

twin dew
#

Not financially viable enough.
ROI needs to be few years max today for that...

#

When the build will stay viable for decades.

tribal kraken
#

Yeah, in numbers the town I live in has 3500 people, is 973,38 km² area, and received about 800.000€ EU funding for the fibre network in 2012-2015

visual tree
#

Or even more

tribal kraken
#

But funny thing is that the town center does not have fibre everywhere. My friend has construction company and they will do small areas next summer

twin dew
#

ISP that serviced those areas said "no", and so EU funding for that area wasn't available.

#

As any fiber built with EU funding needs to be "open access", but any completely privately funded can be closed.

visual tree
twin dew
#

And if there is ISP servicing area, they can block funding too, even if not yet fiber.

#

Private monopoly is ok to be protected from public funded network...

#

Even when that private monopoly ISP would have access to the fiber afterwards like anyone else.

#

Result of some lawsuit by ISPs EU wide IIRC.

visual tree
#

Regulating agency forced that law for all ISP's and they need to rent copper/fiber to other ISP's

twin dew
#

But not for fiber or cable.

#

So died with ADSL.

visual tree
#

Biggest problem with fiber deployment here is waiting for building permits from city which can take a while because of beraucracy

#

Not to mention my crazy neighbor who prevented ISP from installing fiber distribution cabinet near the apartment building because it's obstructing the view from her balcony...

#

She got sued by ISP btw and police arrived lol

#

Since we have all building permits and everything is 100% legal

#

Imagine if city wanted to replace old street lights with led and then someone suddenly prevented the city workers from doing construction because they don't like the color of led

#

Those people are the reason we can't move forward and they only prevent the human progress

night girder
#

This syntax is so weird.

#

In other languages, you don't need to do unwrap. Neither path.unwrap().path().display().

#

Which makes no sense. if you unwrap a path, why is there another path object? And why do I need to call .display() on it so I am able to print it as a str.

#

Ok, reading the documentation it kinda makes sense.

#

Both a lot of languages would do this under the hood. Without calling .display() explicitly.

twin dew
#

When you unwrap a value in Rust what you’re doing is taking out the underlying value out of some container.
However, some value when unwrapped will cause at runtime panics to be raised, crashing your application.

#

Seems to be you are getting bad advice on how to do something.

night girder
#

No.

jagged snow
night girder
#

A Path might contain non-Unicode data. This struct implements the Display trait in a way that mitigates that. It is created by the display method on Path. This may perform lossy conversion, **depending **on the platform. If you would like an implementation which escapes the path please use Debug instead.

jagged snow

Its good though

Yeah, first time coding in Rust today.

jagged snow

Its hard to get used to

And more rigid than anything else I've ever used except for ml

twin dew
night girder
#

Well most of it makes sense. it's just a lot of extra calls atm.

twin dew
#

Not that .display() that outputs it as specific kind of string for display.

night girder
#

Like I said, feels like rust gives more control. Does less under the hood.

twin dew
#

You seem to be taking path, then unwrapping it, then wrapping it again.

night girder
#

No, not at all.

jagged snow
night girder

That's all the code I wrote in rust atm.

twin dew
night girder

You get something, then you unwrap it, then you run it through that .path(), and then you use the display() on the result of the path().

#

But without knowing what you are unwrapping, cannot be sure.

night girder
#

without .path() I get error.

jagged snow
#

This is probably a good place for .map() and a closure

night girder
#

path.unwrap().display() is nto possible.

twin dew
night girder
#

path.unwrap().path().display() is possible.

twin dew
#

Or can you just run .display() directly on the value without unwrap or path.

night girder
#

compiling

#

nop. path.display() error.

#

So, code is correct.

twin dew
#

Because you are running unwrap earlier too...

night girder
#

🤦‍♂️

#

I did 2 things you said, all I get is errors.

twin dew
#

Lets see what that fs::read_dir outputs as type...

night girder
#

Trust me. I think there is a reason the code is as is.

#

Since it compiles and works.

jagged snow
#

You need to umwrap

twin dew
#

You get iterator...
And instead of using the iterator, you unwrap it to some kind of array...

night girder
sage pier
#

anyone know about vms? I'm using virtual box right now, and I installed arch with kde plasma. x11 seems to work fine, but when I use wayland, the mouse is very stuttery and system settings says 60hz is the max even though on x11 it says 180hz is. Should I use vmware instead?

twin dew
#

And then iterate on the array with for-loop, and need to unwrap the array inside values and convert them into paths, then display the paths value...

night girder
twin dew
#

So you are doing that thing in very weird way, which results in the need to unwrap.

#

But point is to use the iterator, so you don't need to unwrap.

night girder
#

unwrap is just, give me the value. If something goes wrong. Panic.

twin dew
jagged snow
night girder
#

You either get Result<T,E> or Option<T>. unwrap gives me T, if there is no T but and E or None = panic.

twin dew
#

io::Result<DirEntry>

jagged snow
#

There are just cleaner ways of doing it
My flight is taking off and I'm about to loose cell though

night girder
#

it's like a null/error protection if you don't care for errors.

night girder
#

Just a bit surprised at first at the syntax of Rust 😄

twin dew
# jagged snow You need it twice

Why do you need to unwrap it even once?
That just converts it from the return type to more generic one.
When you can do the stuff on the original type too?

night girder
#

seems lower level.

#

Btw, the "wrong code" I am using is from stackoverflow top voted.

twin dew
# night girder

Yeah, which often contains absolute crap?
When that Rust documentation shows directly about same thing?

#

Without any unwraps.

night girder
#

you do you

#

If you find that more readable for a beginner. Than stackoverflow example.

twin dew
#

It works, but seems to be very unrecommended type of Rust.
Where almost any time you need .unwrap() there is better way without it.

night girder
#

Go a head and do it like that.

#

But the example on rust give me a headache.

#

cb: &dyn Fn(&DirEntry)) ... what? not beginner friendly.

twin dew
#

That is walking whole directory tree, not just the current directory entries?

night girder
#

You know what a beginner is right?

#

Someone who does something for the first time.

#

You seem to be looking at this subject from a totally different viewpoint.

twin dew
#

As you then get used to that bad form.

night girder
#

correctly is already so opinionated

#

One just handles errors underneath the hood.

twin dew
#

And that second one doesn't call .unwrap() at all?

night girder
#

The other one let's the devs handle rrors.

#

Yeah, different use cases.

twin dew
#

That is the point, you can do the same without error handling too?

night girder
#

It's even documented on rust to use unwrap() when developer doesn't expect errors.

twin dew
#

Seemed to be "only if you cannot do it any other way, AND you don't get errors or have handled it other way already".

night girder
#

anyway, I didn't come in here to discuss how I program.

#

I wanted to share I am rusting 🤣

#

and that the syntax is doing my head in.

night girder
#

Also weird, rust doesn't need return keyword.

#

fn someMethod() -> String {...}

-> String tells that a string is returned. And the latest value in the method will be returned.

#

fn implicit() -> i32 { 1 }

"trying to get DDU to work"?
Never heard it being anything else than extract and run.

pure karma

twin dew

Another pointer to your OS or computer being fucked.

pure karma

it would extract running it would ask to extract again and again and again

twin dew

So you are just idiot.
You don't run the extractor again, it extracted the thing to another place.

#

Working as intended.

pure karma
#

then i downloaded it like 40 times before it eventually actually started up

twin dew
#

Unless you got the Guru3D repackage, where they just compressed the original extractor inside another.

#

Where you need to extract twice.
Once from the Guru3D package, then find the extracted original extractor, run that and extract, and then find the extracted files and run the exe.

pure karma
#

it would help if the extractor wasent labeled as an application exe

twin dew

extension? you mean file type?

Created with 7zip.

So 7zip compression with integrated extractor.

When run gives this, with the files own folder as default:

Or can be opened with compatible programs like 7zip as archive.

And extracted externally.

night girder

Guru3D gives me

a .zip with a .exe in it

night girder
#

Gotcha.

#

So, they mark it as installer and self-extracting.

twin dew

Two different files.
One actually installs the program "permanently" into Program Files and adds start menu shortcuts etc.
Other is just extractor.

pure karma

finally got it to stop shitting the bed

twin dew

Ok, that is CPU limitation via some very fucky route.
But last time the GPU time was way up and Frame was way above either.
If you put Task Manager on Details tab, and sort by CPU usage, what are the results when in that state?

pure karma
twin dew
#

That isn't Details.

pure karma
#

dident even know that was a tab in task manager

twin dew
#

And in that one game is not really running and CPU is almost completely idle.

#

So bad data.

pure karma

?????

CPU is 97% idle and Satisfactory is using 1%

pure karma

twin dew
twin dew
night girder

I am also missing 1%.

twin dew
# night girder

Rounding happens.
But point is that the game was supposed to use 40+% of the CPU, and was marked as using 1%

pure karma
#

stupid HW monitor isent reading right because its not updated ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

twin dew
#

But seems it is broken currently.
Same with Valheim right now for me.
Details shows minimal usage, everything else shows reality.

night girder
#

btw, isn't it 1% because it got send to background?

twin dew
night girder
#

but OS reporting 1% for satisfactory is weird. Doesn't even have anything to do with updating HWinfo.

twin dew
#

And the default view shows correctly in both cases.

pure karma
#

best i can do

twin dew
#

Like I said, seems MS fucked up that Details page currently in Win11.

pure karma
#

occt is the only monitoring tool i have that isent so outdated it cant read

night girder
twin dew
#

Point was to try to see if something else was using significant amount of CPU.

twin dew
#

And that default Processes hasn't historically shown everything that details did.

night girder
#

No works like intended I think?

#

when game is idle sit around 1%. But when loading etc it spikes ofc.

twin dew
#

Need to restart after todays updates to see if they fixed that in todays monthly update.

#

But on my february patched Win11 23H2 that Details CPU usage is broken.

Just read government here is planning to introduce fees for solar panel owners which would make the investment return period longer. F**** this country.....

The government must be like: "Oh, I see you are producing more energy than than you are consuming and you don't pay a single cent for electricity. We can't let you do that, pay up!"

night girder
#

Similar thing happened here 5 years ago with subsidies.

visual tree

I bet it's because 90% of population has a contract with electrical company which is owned by the government

#

More solar panels mean less money for the government and the government, as we know, it doesn't like that....

#

So much for promoting energy independence lol

night girder
#

For a few years, people got subsidies if they got solar panels. But it was so popular, the goverment lost a shit ton of money. And the years afterwards, we all had to pay it back with extra tax.

#

Also, they stopped doing it after two years. But we are still paying for it.

night girder

OPNsense is an open source, FreeBSD-based firewall and routing **software **developed by Deciso, a company in the Netherlands that makes hardware and sells support packages for OPNsense. Launched in 2015, it is a fork of pfSense, which in turn was forked from m0n0wall built on FreeBSD.

#

So it doesn't state it's an OS system.

twin dew
#

In what way?
OPNSense is full OS, but the included by default things and the development focus is on being used as web-configurable firewall system.
"Appliance" OS, but can do anything any other FreeBSD based distro can do if wanted.
