There are no real new protections in last 20 years.

#

Maybe the usage of those on actual complete devices has increased.

#

But you cannot protect uncased things fully.

#

Too many possible contact points for first contact.

languid gulch
#

JTC & LTT with Electroboom really tortured some pc internals & it survived way more than i thought

twin dew
#

Lot of ESD damage isn't instant, but causes initial damage that will worsen in use until causes instability or breakage.

languid gulch
#

just sounds kinda weird to have multiple people reporting them DOA

twin dew
#

Needs specialist equipment to image and then painstaking visual search to confirm after initial zap.
In cases it isn't high enough for instant dead.

twin dew
#

And 1% would still be completely normal.

languid gulch
#

yea good point

#

especially with this series too i guess

night girder
#

My local PC shop laughed at me when i asked for anti static wrist wrap.

#

"Never, in all the years I build PC's, have I ever used that. And never was it needed." - was their answer.

twin dew
#

And how many broken parts or later warranty cases has that caused, but they haven't just connected the dots.

night girder
#

I never set foot in their again. Didn't order any parts through them either.

#

The shop owner clearly had their opinion about it and think it's all bullshit.

twin dew
night girder
#

In the hope they had anti static bracelets and they just laughed at me.

sharp oasis
#

Do you guys know of any decent multi GPU anti sag supports

night girder
#

Also, how much does it cost for a PC building shop / hardware to use bracelets?

#

They can write it off.

night girder
#

Was thinking about something like that. Srewable.

#

Got something like this Not exactly the same. Similar. And it sucks.

sharp oasis
#

Yes the upper GPU is so entirely choked its undervolted to make sure it doesn't overheat

#

In total with rendering im pulling at least 675-700w from wall

night girder
#

I was to say ... that's an interesting setup. Was wondering about temperatures for the sandwich GPU's.

sharp oasis
#

Lower GPU is fine and upper GPU stays at about 70-75c loaded with a heavy undervolt

twin dew
#

Would probably try something like:
(Kolink Core Adept VGA Support Mount / Jonsbo VC-1 Black, possibly other variants)

sharp oasis
#

I am looking at a bigger case dw

#

But have yet to find one that is not absurdly expensive

night girder
#

And does the screw connect properly to the main rod?

twin dew
night girder
#

or does it eventually start slipping downwards under the weight.

night girder
#

And the main rod just looks fragile. Easy to break of the foot.

#

Do you have that one Baldur?

sharp oasis
#

Cursed vs less cursed power setup...

twin dew
night girder
#

Since you don't screw horizontal, but vertically.

sharp oasis
#

I was honestly thinking of doing that but said its probably much safer to have one GPU on its own like and the other GPU at least on two lines

twin dew
night girder
#

Ok, just wondering. If you know something better for single GPU, let me know.

#

Open for ideas.

sharp oasis
#

Might need to bite the bullet and get myself a Corsair 7000D

#

Or something that will allow me to have the gpus a bit further apart

night girder
#

Or Lian Li is also good I belive.

sharp oasis
#

Just needs to be able to support multiple gpus with more spacing that's about it

pure karma

with the size of those cards its definitely not easy

twin dew
#

Well, position on the road is wrong....

#

visual tree
#

I always move to the right lane and try to drive close to the curb so the manholes don't damage my car....

night girder
#

what is the logic?

visual tree
#

That's the problem, there is zero logic in this

#

There are some rumors why this was made but you can't know if it's true

#

Correction: google maps distance measurement is around 20 meters, not 10

night girder
#

I though it was to flush the segments if needed 🤣

#

but that means you have other issues if you need that for every segment 😄

visual tree
#

Not to mention this is also dangerous if some manhole cover is not properly seated in the hole. Someone online mentioned they know a friend who ran over a cover that wasn't properly seated and it damaged the wheels

verbal raft

to me this channel isnt what i expected it to be...

visual tree
#

Can we discuss about the german concept of Stoßlüften? It's nerd stuff, isn't it? 🤓

#

Not sure if the concept means opening all house windows for 5 minutes and letting stale air out during the morning, the day and night

#

Or just morning and night?

verbal raft
#

and most deffinately not an "off-topic-tech" channel

#

and i kind of feel like i dont fit in 🤷‍♂️

#

this channel isnt (for the most part) about stuff i am interested in

but if i want to talk tech i often find myself in the optiscaler discord or the Stalker 2 "PC-specs" channel

night girder
#

lightning, talk all the tech here you want.

night girder
#

It doesn't matter what other people are talking about 😉

#

I mean, it's not because other people are discussing science or anything else. You cannot post tech related topics.

night girder
#

maybe we should ask for an off-topic-science channel? 🤔

verbal raft

if the people in charge allowed it

verbal raft

hallucintating stuff

night girder

And I am not saying, there shouldn't be room for such discussions. But maybe it deserves it's own channel once people start to leave the discord because of it.

dire igloo

also, the more people there are and the smaller the room is

#

it's the counterpart to having your windows constantly open but only a little
instead of trickling in new air over time, you just flush the system and replenish it all in one go

#

be aware of drafts, those can and will slam any doors or windows that you didn't block to stay open

visual tree
#

I was having an argument with my mother regarding this. She believes germans only ventilate house during the morning while I believe you should do it at least 2 or 3 times a day

dire igloo
#

it's usually per floor or apartment, not for the entire building

#

I've hardly ever had the front door open for venting

verbal raft

Not in the cold months though.

visual tree

Wish I lived in climate where you don't need AC or heating

night girder

such as?

dire igloo
#

you can design buildings in a fashion that allows them to automatically adjust to temps

Anywhere on equator although internet suggest moving to higher-altitude places

San Diego, California, USA - Known for its mild, Mediterranean climate, San Diego often has comfortable temperatures year-round.

Winter (December to February): Average highs range from 18°C to 20°C (64°F to 68°F), and average lows range from 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F).
Spring (March to May): Average highs range from 19°C to 23°C (66°F to 73°F), and average lows range from 10°C to 13°C (50°F to 55°F).
Summer (June to August): Average highs range from 24°C to 27°C (75°F to 81°F), and average lows range from 16°C to 18°C (61°F to 64°F).
Fall (September to November): Average highs range from 23°C to 26°C (73°F to 79°F), and average lows range from 12°C to 16°C (54°F to 61°F).

dire igloo

and you accomplish that by two ways:
reduce consumption (insulation against cold and heat, intelligent lighting) and improve production (solar panels, heat recycling)

As you said - people talk about their peak interest. it's not like you can't add to it. Even if you will get shouted on if it's not nerd, science or hardware programming.

because it starts slower but remains the same and ends up faster well before the end of the test

stray badger
#

sabrent q4 looks to be fast and consistent, im assuming the plus g is the same drive with cache

twin dew
#

Or stuff like that BSOD error stuff from Windows update on some HMB drives until firmware update.

#

HMB is about making cheaper drive, not better drive.

#

DRAMless drive on costs, that performs better than purely DRAMless one, but worse than one with DRAM.

#

And uses less FLASH writes than DRAMless, but more than one with DRAM.

twin dew
wanton orchid
#

OS could also overwrite it (in case of bugs)

twin dew
mental oriole
#

Wtf

twin dew
#

This is large part why kernel mode anticheats are so hated.
As the code quality is often pretty shitty and exposes the users to this kind of exploits.

mental oriole
#

The hotfix patch system uses RCE.

#

Someone needs to be fired asap...

twin dew

Allows for RCE, as it doesn't check where that patch is actually coming from.

dire igloo
twin dew
#

So I would expect that the whole system power usage goes up significantly.

dire igloo
#

MAP1602 and E27T drives run cooler than E18

twin dew
#

That is about specific controller implementation, not about DRAM vs HMB.

dire igloo
#

E18 only has SM2264 (used in only two drives) and IG5236 (suicidal) as direct competition

#

E25 in a single drive, also hot

twin dew
#

You should have said that the current HMB controllers are more power efficient.
Over current DRAM-using controllers.

dire igloo
#

Plus proprietary stuff

twin dew
#

You said that HMB itself is the thing causing that difference.

dire igloo
#

Okay, yeah, fair point

#

HMB isn't inherently cooler, we just haven't had an exception to the rule yet

twin dew
#

And like I said, it might be on drive level, but on total system level that HMB needs lot extra power from other components.

#

Also often the cheap DRAM SSD controllers are the leftovers from older generation.
While the HMB ones are probably newer.
As each PCIe gen etc. will first be implemented in DRAM-using controller.
And only later on HMB one, so the HMB one will often be on newer node.

Literally, dozens of thousands of years of observations, of the same phenomena over and over, and yet, models that weren't allogned with dogma weren't even allowed.
Especially, retrograde of planets - it takes completely new model to understand how this can be described as an emergent behaviour from system of rules, and not as an oddity.

in ssd ram is tuned for power and reliability
it does not need to be that fast

dire igloo
#

not sure on that, will have to take your word for it

#

still, DRAM vs system RAM leaves out the controller itself

wanton orchid
#

keep in mind system ram hits above 50GB/s effective access speed, not even talking about ddr5

#

going on the pcie bus is not inherently more efficient

#

pcie is known to burn a lot of power actually

#

a simpler and slower controller will always be colder

dire igloo
wanton orchid
#

my point is the ssd dram is not what generate heat

dire igloo
#

wasn't my point either

#

it's the controllers that use DRAM that run hot

#

not the DRAM chip itself

wanton orchid
#

it's the controller that performs complex operation fast that runs hot

#

I would like to see some performance like for like temperatures comparisons

dire igloo
wanton orchid
#

if your laptop use the ssd half the time it will have less time to ramp up

dire igloo
#

in a laptop, half the time the SSD's performance is completely negligible anyway

dire igloo
#

Windows load times look similar

wanton orchid
#

my point is no controller will run hot if it's unused

dire igloo
#

yup, that's true

#

it's when you do use it that it matters

wanton orchid
#

but faster will mean less time used

dire igloo
#

KC3000 is Phison E18, almost twice the power consumption of MAP1602-based NM790

wanton orchid

for what operations

wanton orchid

that's my point
it should show power operations normalized

dire igloo
#

I just took a shortcut to the results

dire igloo

the S70 Blade in the testing should be IG5236, the other mainstream highend controller that uses DRAM

wanton orchid
#

I do see the chart
the most relevant one is game loading

#

it does show it is more efficient
but it's closer

#

I hate single point charts like this

dire igloo
wanton orchid
#

when it actual should be a weighted geomean of difference of the curves

#

(3d result ranking)

dire igloo

anyways, overall, NM790 ain't worse than KC3000 but it comes at a much lower power draw

Intel BE cards have Win10 drivers.

languid gulch
twin dew

severe obsidian
languid gulch
#

Yea just gonna grab a win11 upgrade usb to install it. The main issue is that I couldn't just downgrade from pro to home with the key, needed to do a fresh install

severe obsidian
#

There are x870 motherboards that don't come with integrated wifi, but it's rare to see

twin dew
#

Seems that MediaTek Wifi7 chips don't have Win10 compatible drivers, which is what is sold on AMD AM5 boards as AMD branded.

#

Intel has those Win10 drivers that make the WiFi7 cards work as Wifi6 cards under Win10.

#

So MediaTeks choice to not support.

languid gulch
#

Convenient

warm jay
#

On the Asrock X870e taichi you don’t have the drivers for windows 10. I tried the windows 11 version and nothing work. Maybe I should see directly on the realteck website

languid gulch
#

At least I have other options to grab the upgrade and get back to normal

warm jay
#

I tried Linux mint in live environments and it work perfectly fine

#

It’s a windows 10 thing

warm jay
#

Yup

twin dew
#

You mean for Wifi?
Or wired LAN?

warm jay
#

Wifi, i dont have lan

twin dew
#

Like I said, the MediaTek Wifi7 chips don't have Win10 drivers, as MediaTeks choice.

#

And those are what comes in most AM5 boards if they have onboard Wifi, as that is who AMD partnered with.

warm jay
#

That’s why I will switch to Linux

severe obsidian
#

Am I blind or is that not wifi drivers right there for windows 10?

severe obsidian
twin dew
#

But this one isn't on Win10 side, as Mediatek hasn't made Win10 driver:

wanton orchid
severe obsidian
#

Oh

#

That's fucking stupid

warm jay
#

Yup

twin dew
#

And you can install that Win11 driver successfully in Win10, but it will error out and not actually work.

severe obsidian
#

Such an expensive motherboard and it doesn't fuken work properly on windows 10? Stupid

twin dew
#

When Windows tries to use it.

severe obsidian
#

just, use windows 11

twin dew
#

As Win11 has extra stuff for Wifi7 that Win10 doesn't.

wanton orchid
#

@severe obsidian I still see not way you can't recover your pc unless you did some mistake physically

twin dew
#

And Mediatek hasn't coded the fallback to Win10 compatible set in.

warm jay

Nah il stick with mint, I already have a Linux machine so I know it works

do the cases have like an unusual amount of USB ports in the front?

#

Like, more than 3-4?

pure karma
#

Most motherboards have 10 + 2 extra generally dedicated for keyboard and mouse plus the ones on your case

severe obsidian
#

huh??

#

Mine has like 6 USB ports

#

one of them usb-c

Some other brand owned by Whirlpool then.
All the major manufacturers own several older brands now.

night girder
#

That's what I am looking up atm.

#

Either they have deal with whirpool for that particular piece of hardware.

#

Or it's like you said.

twin dew
#

What brand is it officially?

night girder
#

Atag. Parent organization: Hisense. (Which is Chinese, I didn't know)

twin dew
#

Hisense-Whirlpool (Zhejiang) Electric Appliances Co Ltd is a joint venture between Hisense Kelon and Whirlpool formed in 2008 for the development and production of washing machines and refrigerators

night girder
#

I am a bit confused. How Atag, which seems to be a Dutch company. Has a chinese company as parent.

#

But has American parts in it.

#

I didn't expect it, but makes sense.

twin dew
#

Remember that in China, Chinese nationals must own controlling share of any company.
So for western company to have Chinese subcompany, it is actually minority partner in it.

#

Including for factories etc.

#

Also remember that no-matter what reads on the machine, it is almost certainly wholly produced in China.

night girder
#

Well, that's the question.

#

Either Whirpool fucked up. Or Hensine.

#

Because the fridge was 2 years and 4 months. (4 months out of warrant)

#

and the piece that broke down, is what I posted (whirpool).

twin dew
#

With that installation location for complex PCB without any kind of waterproof coating, seems like intentional design for planned obsolescence.

night girder
#

Normally, a fridge shouldn't break down after 2 years.

night girder
#

We will see now, they put in another PCB. If it breaks in 2 years we know the answer 🤣

#

I just noticed the sticker on PCB. Let me see if I can get picture.

twin dew
#

It's readable in the original.

#

Or was that the new one?

#

The one in previous pic was manufactured on 2022-02-23 or 2023-02-22.

night girder
#

The sticker says Jabil China 🤔

twin dew
#

Production location.

#

As expected.

night girder
#

So, PCB is made in China and they slapped Whirpool logo on it?

#

Or the QA was done in China and final production and they slapped sticker on it? (but PCB made in USA).

twin dew
#

Just means Whirlpool was part of the PCB design.
Nothing else.

night girder
#

A bit misleading no?

twin dew
#

Or that it was designer for Whirlpool.

#

Just standard stuff.

#

And like I said, all the Whirlpool fridges will be manufactured in exact same factory as those HiSense and subbrand ones.

#

Just that that Odin Enhanced stuff was left out.

night girder
#

So, American company, manufacturing fridges in China?

twin dew
#

Some final assembly done for high-end products.

night girder
twin dew
#

But even for those the parts will be made in china, and usually to pretty high level.

twin dew
#

And for almost all consumer electronics, no matter the brands owners country of origin, will be manufactured in China.

verbal raft
#

so im was having this issue with MHW

night girder
#

Can you clarify perishable?

verbal raft
#

and i had to turn RT on to fix it

#

why?

Oh, expire date?

Sorry in my head: "everything expires?" cars, cpu's, ....

Seems Whirlpool does at least do that final assembly for their own brand NA sold stuff in USA.
But almost certainly from Chinese made assemblies.
