Because if you're planning to keep the 1660s you're far better off buying a used last gen chip

case cooling question - remove bracket fins below gpu to let the air leave case through the back, yay or nay?
They currently in, max gpu was 85C.

jagged snow
#

It can't hurt

#

especially if you just have the two fans in the front

obtuse geyser
#

In that case, I have to take the find out, cut them and put the stumps in, because that support bracket expects fins to be in place to screw on top of them. Fins are plastic, so no prob.
Btw, how about installing that support bracket upside down? Only one fin to cut in that position, and less trouble screwing all in around gpu.

#

Eww, coil whine.
I thought that era was over.
My 5700XT didn't have coil whine. Or maybe fans were so loud I could not hear it thinking_helmet

And how many have actually been killed?

#

Those lawsuits are done by people who don't live anywhere near the launch site...

#

No?
As there is stoppage during that time IIRC.

#

Cape Canaveral / Kennedy Space Center is in same way situated in a place that is bird paradise most of the time with protected wetlands all around.

And almost no-one cares now with SpaceX, just some crackpots from around the country doing nuisance lawsuits etc.
They haven't been able to find anyone anywhere local (50km range?) to be a mouthpiece still AFAIK.

That's my understanding as well

Mostly just lawsuits after money from a company with a lot of public visibility and some controversy

Just announcement for current weather rocket site with no actual substance behind it.

The straight up and down to near space kind that have been launched there since ages ago.

France could still lease the site from the new local government if they were open for it.

Main Russian launch site isn't in Russia, it is in Kazakhstan.
And after Soviet Union fell they have had to lease it.

gilded helm
#

And Kazakh-Russia relations aren't at an all time high at the moment.

twin dew
#

Russia does have polar launch site in active use in Russia itself.
And they have that notional new launch site on Pacific coast, but that isn't really active, and they cannot launch to ISS for example from there, too north.

#

ISS is on orbit that matches Baikonur in latitude.

gilded helm

The launch site they're building near their border with China isn't going to end well, China will probably end up owning it.

soft bloom
#

Why is "suspended" state called so if it draws almost quarter (22W) of operating power (94W) ?

twin dew
#

For what?

#

The whole computer in suspended state, almost off?
22W would say you have "bad" PSU which needs that high load to work, so it just wastes power to keep to at least that if needed.

wanton orchid
#

to get to your wanted behavior can be a bit of fiddling with advanced settings, but you can easily access these
Firefox have been more stable for me so far (not more performant, not more feature full, but at least it's doing its job consistently even across updates)

#

Firefox advanced settings are commandline settings alike
it's basically a token list with literal settings, a bit like windows register

#

Chromium prefer hiding its shit behind convoluted "smart" crap

#

my most hated regression so far at Firefox :
now bookmarks can't be opened in new tab without focusing them, even when right-clicking

#

they should either add a token for that or make it respect the common new tab focus token

#

it's not that much slower right now
especially on last gen Hardware (more single thread performance)

#

Chrome performance relies heavily on threading things to death even if that mean being less efficient

#

it's all focused like if chrome was the only thing running on your computer

soft bloom
twin dew
#

In sleep mode desktop computers vary from about 2W to 30W.

#

As in modern ones with good PSU and with normal settings, without ErP on often use that 2-3W while sleeping, and then with misconfigurations or PSU that cannot work at low loads will have 10-30W.

#

When measured at the wall.

wanton orchid

on some website there are C6 PSU support listing
which is nice

(C6 being the lower power state of the computer, basically means PSU expect it, detects it and is stable in it)

Ps4 sleep mode keeps the fan running and draws like 30W lol

twin dew

S3 is Suspend to RAM (Sleep), S4 is Suspend to Disk (HW level Hibernate).

Powered off, as in that S5 mode I mentioned?
That computer is shut down from OS, but PSU has power and motherboard is getting standby power?

#

@soft bloom

#

Or put into "Sleep" in OS?

soft bloom
#

button on PSU makes it down to 0W

twin dew
#

Suspend in Linux is same as Sleep in Windows.
S3, Suspend to RAM.
With Power off being that S5.

#

Just PSU that cannot provide the standby power without significant internal extra load.

soft bloom
#

and i checked power settings in BIOS - they are all on, except for toggle to not power backup if power grid went down

twin dew
#

No separate +5V standby generation, but from 12V midpoint that needs extra load to stay stable.

#

So it uses internal load resistor or like to generate that base load.

#

Or the case where OS doesn't send the actual final turn off signal correctly and the computer stays in active black screen when it should turn off.
But in that case the monitor shouldn't go to sleep.

#

But as S3 and S5 use the same amount of power, I would expect that to just be the PSUs minimum load it can work on.

#

And it is wasting enough extra internally to keep to that minimum level.

#

That was/is somewhat common thing in cheap PSUs.

#

After PSUs moved from regulating all rails separately, to first doing +12V and then doing DC-DC for the rest.
With now +5V standby being again completely separate in better PSUs (S3, S5 power usage).
And the +12V being able to be stable at very low loads too in better PSUs (C6 idle working without extra power wastage).

Actually, maybe battery percentage isn’t accurately represented over 90% or so

~15-20ms being the real ping, and the rest being packets stuck in buffer because of overloaded link, with way too large buffer.

jagged snow
#

Very odd

#

Only thing I can figure is it's the nic in my pc acting up

twin dew
#

So that was without your internet connection being used much otherwise?

tough owl
#

could be windows network stack

twin dew
#

And in that case you should ping your routers internal IP first, then the default gateway your router reports for the WAN, and only after that Internet.

#

To check where the problem starts.
Internal LAN, between router and closest ISP hardware, or after.

jagged snow
twin dew
#

Wifi or wired?

jagged snow
#

WiFi

twin dew
#

Then I would expect it to be too many APs on same or overlapping channel, or other interference source on the frequency the Wifi channel used uses.

#

Causing lot of collisions.

jagged snow
#

I suspected that as well, jumped channels a few times and it didn't get much better

twin dew
#

Or could be overdone power saving settings (including AP side).

twin dew
jagged snow
#

5ghz, no I haven't bothered to check

twin dew
#

What channels did you test?

jagged snow
#

AP has only been up for about 12 hours and I'm still getting moved in

twin dew
#

Because 36, 40, 44 and 48 for example are in reality one channel.

jagged snow
#

Jumped all around the range

#

Tried 40 and 80mhz channel width on 40, 149, and 161

twin dew
#

149, 153, 157 and 161 are again just one channel on 80MHz width.

jagged snow
#

But not on 40, like I said I tried both

#

So either wildly congested 5ghz band here or an issue with my pc's nic as far as I can tell

twin dew
#

36-48 is usually the most congested 80MHz part of 5GHz WLAN.

jagged snow
#

And it's slightly slower besides

#

I'm using wifi 6 with ofdma, you think that has anthing to do with it?

languid gulch

their only real advantage vs V or inline is their vibration & noise dampening

There is also an option "Optimised Battery Charging" - I have it enabled.

Can't wait to hear what kind of stories salespeople will try to sell me when I move to another ISP and get fiber soon

They think everyone is computer-illiterate and they can trick people

jagged snow
#

My recent experience was pretty good

#

Their sales rep had no idea what 100/100 actually meant though

visual tree
#

This time they have zero argument why I should continue using their services lol

#

My argument nb. 1 : Competitor offers fiber, you don't have it

#

Argument nb. 2: Even if there is no fiber and I could use home 5G, competitor has it, you don't

#

It's funny how salespeople will still try to sell you something even if their service is inferior

#

Not to mention their site says: "Enjoy home 5G internet with 1 TB of data on 5G speed!"

#

But there are small letters that say: "Speed is limited to 200 Mbit/s to prevent base station overload"

#

That's literally false advertisement

twin dew
#

"5G speed" doesn't mean anything?

#

Minimum for continous transmissions at the 5G spec minimal data rate might be 10Mbit/s?

visual tree
#

When someone says 5G speeds, I expect speeds up to 1 gbit/s and not speed cap of 200 Mbit/s

#

You can even reach 200 Mbit/s on 4G homebox

#

*on better days that is

jagged snow
#

The problem is that that is 5g speed

#

Just not what you're expecting when you hear it

twin dew
#

Because it is marketing term made to give impression, but not mean anything.

jagged snow
#

It's misleading but not false

visual tree

5G is definitely overhyped. When they started covering cities with 5G, they advertised everywhere how it will offer speeds up to 1 gbit/s

Branding the minor LTE spec step as 5G was pure marketing thing.

jagged snow

And then I'm often stuck with 3g or sometimes even 2g

my grandparents house which is closer to the city central than mine is doesnt have coax and is still running 2 dls connections together for internet

might be because the local isp didnt bother since they were a paying customer at the time or just didnt do the neighboorhod and only do it by request

jagged snow
#

The majority of homes in my area jumped coax and went straight to fiber from dsl

visual tree
#

DOCSIS can't be considered fiber imo

tough owl
#

where im currently living at for college the fiber line is just connected to the switch in the laundry room just chillin on the wall

visual tree
#

By that logic, I could also advertise vdsl as "fiber" 😂

twin dew
#

Yes, again marketing terms being intentionally misleading.

twin dew
tough owl
#

can we ban marketing that is "technically true"

jagged snow
#

For all of them the technicians just stapled, bolted, and drilled directly through the siding without any care

tough owl
#

so you just have all that hardware just attached to your house?

jagged snow
#

Several thousand dollars in total damages

tough owl
#

could you not sue them for property damage, unless the install contract says we aint liable for anything

jagged snow
#

The big annoyance currently is that when the previos tenants had fiber installed(without consulting the landlord) the technician ran the fiber along the outside of the house and then through the living room wall about two feet off the ground, then mounted their termination box and fiber modem on the wall there

#

Apparently they wanted to charge extra to run the fiber all the way to the closet where the modem was supposed to go

tough owl
#

does it really cost that much more to install it where it belongs

jagged snow
#

No, just lazy technician

#

And the previous cable and dish installs all terminated in that closet so I assume he just didn't want to work around it

#

Either way, I've removed one dish and about 200 feet of coax and associated junctions and splitters from the outside of the house so far and I'm not even halfway done

tough owl
#

any plans with all that extra coax?

jagged snow
#

They screwed one of the dishes directly through the shingles and sheeting on the roof and caused problems over there so that's on the docket to fix, likely today

jagged snow
#

Gonna just scrap it or trash it, the sheath is weathered and starting to crack in places

#

Some of it's been there for several decades at this point

tough owl
#

all that copper has to be worth something right

jagged snow
#

Probably would be

#

But maybe 15 bucks if I had to guess?

#

There isn't a ton of copper in coax compared to power wiring or even something like enet

tough owl
#

worth more than nothing

jagged snow
#

True

#

I just don't know if it's worth the time to haul it 30 miles

tough owl
#

ah if its that far away maybe not

#

unless youre already going that direction

jagged snow
#

Nope, opposite of anywhere I'll be headed today

tough owl
#

in the future though?

jagged snow
#

Not really much else for me to do over that way so I doubt it

#

The dishes will get recycled because they're full metal but the coax will likely end up getting trashed

#

Especially since a lot of it is made up of 20 foot sections with junctions and extenders instead of one long run

Perfectly fine for most network appliance type builds like meant with those 4 LANs, but not really speed demon.

For that specific model.

maiden coyote

Anything needing more than 16gb will probably need a faster cpu yeah. Network stuff.. it's awesome. I've installed proxmox on it and I'm running a whole bunch of stuff on it. Home assistant, pi hole, nginx.. I'll probably install opnsense on it in the near future

So PCIe lane or USB 3 for the first four for example.

#

That blue Wifi is for specific generation CVNi, not PCIe.

maiden coyote
#

On that board they used it all

#

Multiple times over lol

twin dew
#

Yeah, but point was that they have too much stuff.
So probably 1x for each 2.5G LAN, 1x for each M.2, 1x for the slot, and then 1x or 2x for separate SATA controller.

#

And something for 2x USB3 ports, probably direct, so one less PCIe lane.

#

Which would fit to 4x LAN, 2x 1x M.2, 1x PCIe, 1x SATA controller, 1x USB3 for total of 9.

maiden coyote
#

Wouldn't look as good on paper, but two skus would've been better.. one for a nas with more lanes for sata and less ethernet.. and another sku for networking.. no sata, pci 1x, nvme at 4x and 4x for lan

#

Usb 2.0 on both.. but that doesn't look as good on paper and pictures

#

Still a good network appliance board, I think if I was building a nas I'd look else where

#

Something like the steam deck apu on a board like that might be cool

twin dew
#

And yes, that OPI (On Package DMI Interconnect) is link between CPU chiplet and chipset chiplet on same substrate.

Somehow my pc managed to fail at being able to use virtualization.
vagrant, android studio... both say there's something wrong. even though BIOS says its on.
what chatgpt suggest to check if its enabled - all of it fails
i wonder what could have happened...

twin dew

Windows 10 and 11 run under HyperV virtualization by default if available.
And that prevents other hypervisors from working.

Unless they are able to use HyperV.

very small update for @twin dew it seems like they don't want to talk to me as the amount of business days it takes for them to respond goes up by one day everytime they respond XD.
this is what they said

Cloning the MAC should be just fine.

I have had customers that easily get speedtests of 900+Mbps on the eero directly.

"An FCC Broadband Label will display internet speed as “typical speeds” and will not guarantee the maximum plan speed. "

twin dew

So the support is on and detected by the kernel.

Was there "Virtualization type:" line?

soft bloom
twin dew

That would have been second line in the example.

But no idea if that should actually show up or not.

In this case.

Ah, that shows if you are inside VM.

So yes, some software level problem.

KVM is build in hypervisor in Linux Kernel.

maiden coyote
#

It is, it's even built into windows. Doesn't make it a good choice

twin dew
#

And what would be the right choice to run some VM on your primary computer then?
That isn't for constant VM use?

#

Not everything needs full fat hypervisor above all OSes.

maiden coyote
#

That's fair, and I'm not going to suggest they run and install esxi or proxmox because I've got no idea what they're trying to do. The latest versions of Ubuntu and eveb debian have left me frustrated.

twin dew
#

Proxmox uses KVM.

#

You just don't get normal access to the base linux system under the Proxmox.

maiden coyote
#

You've got a root shell with proxmox.

twin dew
#

Ok, not Proxmox user.
But it is just another Linux distro as base.
Just meant for running VMs on KVM.

#

Or just containerized loads and not full VMed.

maiden coyote
#

Not a normal user account no.. you've just got root on proxmox

#

Device pass through can be done with the web interface though, even pci pass through. The Gpus take some extra work in cli. I was able to run games with a dedicated gpu on a windows guest on it.

#

It seems like less headaches. That's all

twin dew
#

But don't blame KVM that you couldn't get shit to work.
As KVM is the backend with multiple frontends.

#

And many of those frontends aren't really that user friendly.

#

Well, seems that lot of electronics are going to again get 25% more expensive in USA as the tariffs for Chinese imports are coming back.

So you're trying to virtualize a virtual machine? If so that's nested, there should be an option to enable that

twin dew

No?
As the lscpu thing would have in that case stated that.

I have a similar issue with one of my systems. The monitor must be turned on before the PC or it won't be detected. 😣

maiden coyote

I've always heard bugs are high in protein.. the ai agrees

tough owl
#

so I have my macbook plugged into the official apple brick which is plugged into my ups which is plugged into mains power. I can hear the brick( I just plugged it into main power instead) having differing level of coil whine when I use my macbook and I am scrolling and the whine subsides when I am scrolling and comes back when its not scrolling

maiden coyote
thick radish

Not at all

maiden coyote

Can you tell if it still boots?

It boots and I can ssh in

Yeah, it sounds like either a bios or driver issue

The fun part of that static on the headphone jack was at one point I fried the USB stick with static electricity. Then instead of static I'd hear a steady tone for a few seconds before it told me the drive wasn't working

#

Would have been interesting to put some raw audio on it

tough owl
#

though I wonder if the coil whine from my 140wpd brick is normal or not

#

ah thanks reddit, looks like its not grounded at all

maiden coyote
#

Ground doesn't have anything to with coil while

tough owl
#

or the fact that my mains power and ups both have awful sine wave outputs

maiden coyote
#

Isn't it a 2 prong plug?

tough owl
#

yes but has the option to be grounded with an extension cord

#

which is grounded

maiden coyote
#

I'd need to see a picture..

#

Uh.. does it have a 3rd contract on a brick?

tough owl
#

yes

maiden coyote
#

A metal one?

tough owl
#

yes

maiden coyote
#

I can't see it on the picture, sorry xd

tough owl
#

Big circle is ground

maiden coyote
#

Well you can still check to see if your outlet is wired properly. It doesn't have anything to do with whine but it's safer

tough owl
#

and on the slot of this theres contacts used for grounding

maiden coyote
#

Why not just use a commercially available 3 prong plug.. because apple

tough owl
#

apple power bricks on non extended cables were never grounded ¯_(ツ)_/¯

maiden coyote
#

It's also plastic

#

Plastic shit is not required to be grounded.

twin dew
#

Yeah, but the point was that they use specific standard 2-pin connector, which has 3-pin standard variant.

#

Which they could have used instead.

tough owl
#

wouldnt allow the prongs to fold and apple likes their folding prongs on larger bricks

#

I might invest in like a 200w pd multi port brick that is grounded cuz its quite annoying

maiden coyote
#

Is the laptop metal?

tough owl
#

aluminium yea

charred pewter
#

gold ?

maiden coyote
#

So it's required to have a ground

tough owl
#

while doing nothing buy just a video playing the coil whine from the brick is present. when scrolling on the trackpad up and down a page the coil whine noise level wave idk how to describe it fluctuates

tough owl
charred pewter
#

hilarious that the top choice of 'some metal laptops:' doesnt list the MACBOOKS which are solid metal

twin dew
#

Because the whine depends on the power demand.

edgy hazel
twin dew
#

And that changes with CPU load.

tough owl
#

theres not that much cpu load when scrolling up and down a already fully loaded forum page

maiden coyote
#

Either way it doesn't matter for coil whine. The ground is connected to the output of the power brick

charred pewter
tough owl
twin dew
#

And coil whine shouldn't care about ground.
But you can get other kinds of whine when thing designed to be grounded is used without ground.

tough owl
#

wait I actually have one of these with me 🤣

#

is it just me or is there no way theyre getting 160w out of a brick this small

charred pewter
twin dew
#

Coil whine is just thing that coils do if they aren't glued down internally (most aren't).
Depending on the current fluctiations in the power going through them.

#

If they hit suitable frequency and amplitude.

twin dew

As usually stuff is either designed to be non-grounded or grounded.
Not one or other depending on the cable.

But Apple could have done it instead of that nonstandard idiocy.

thats like hipocracy over there
